State-Of-The-Art Field & Track Alumni Stadium got a facelift in 2012. The expansion and renovation project included a new synthetic

turf field and an international-calibre eight-lane track. This Revolution turf product from Field Turf is the number one football field in North America and the main choice of professional teams. The alternating greens and distinctive red and black checkerboard end zones have made Alumni Stadium one of the

most recognizable venues in the landscape of collegiate football, both north and south of the border.

COMMUNITY

INVOLVEMENT The impact these student-athletes have on our campus and in the City of Guelph can be measured in many ways including stat sheets, headlines and highlight videos. Many of these examples are obvious; however there are some that go unseen and that make the biggest impact of them all. The community of Guelph and Gryphon Football continues to grow stronger together. Gryphon Football student-athletes and staff are constantly challenging each other to give back to the beautiful City of Guelph and football communities across Canada. This football program is made up of players and coaches from across Canada, and all give back to their respective communities in a positive capacity. Locally, Gryphon football student-athletes dedicate their time to the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board. Leading programs such as flag football clinics, high school football courses, and Power of Positive Choices Days and participation in board-wide conferences such as the RISE (Recognizing Internal Strength for Empowerment) conference allows players to connect with and mentor younger students. As well, the Gryphons donated one of their dinners to the Guelph Drop-In Centre in support of the University of Guelph Athletic Department’s United Way Campaign. The Gryphons are also a fixture in local community activities. Support of local initiatives as the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Bowl-a-Thon and Wheels in Motion are yearly activities that Gryphons participate in. A fundraising campaign that is close to Gryphon Football hearts is the Do it For Dan Campaign.

The campaign is named after Gryphon Football friend Dan Edwards and began in 2007 and raises money for spinal cord injuries. In 2015 Marcus Volpe, Sam Lewis and Andrew Chichka went global with their outreach participating in the ‘Me to We’ mission in Ecuador. This is the third straight year members of the Gryphon Football Team have participated in this meaningful charitable initiative. The three Gryphons built a school and assisted with other development projects. They experienced remarkable biodiversity and gained first-hand experience with environmental and development issues, as well as built lifelong skills through leadership and global development workshops. Even during the off-season the Gryphons are maintaining their presence on campus and in the city and continuing to give back. Each summer, Alumni Stadium opens its doors to hundreds of youth within the community who come to participate in week-long flag football camps run by Gryphon Football players and staff. Growing more popular is the Elite High School Football Camp in August. This camp is run by Gryphon coaches and players and allows high school football players to experience University level coaching and understand what it takes to be a Gryphon. Our coaches are also active in surrounding communities through their participation in various clinics and organizations including: Hamilton Hurricanes Varsity Football Program, Hamilton Ironmen Junior Varsity Football Program, Mississauga Warriors Football Program, Gryphon Big Man Camp, Guest Speakers at Canada Football Chat Coaches Clinic, Learning Facilitators for the NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program), Provincial Coaching Staff for Team Ontario of the OFA (Ontario Football Alliance), National Coaching Staff for Football Canada, Regional All-Star Game Coaching Staff, and supporters of BC High School Football Association.

In addition to state of the art facilities, players are coached through every prescribed Strength & Conditioning session by S&C Coach Jordan Foley and a team of S&C interns from the Human Kinetics faculty. Attention is paid to performing workouts correctly and efficiently to ensure that athletes are safe and constantly improving their physical development. Players are also provided educational support in areas of sleep, stress and nutrition. The Gryphons feel that it is not enough to simply train their players but attention needs to be paid to how they recover and adapt to this training. Players are offered nutritional support in the form of cooking classes, nutritional handouts/presentations and nutritional tracking. Similarly, sleep and stress are tracked via recovery surveys to educate the players about how these aspects of rest and recovery impact performance.

In 2016, a total of 16 former Gryphons will make their living in professional football. 15 of these U of G alumni are individuals who are currently employed by the CFL while two others have landed south of the border in the NFL. A further breakdown shows that nine are current CFL players, three are current CFL coaches, and the remaining five are in the front office for various CFL and NFL franchises. Despite the fact that all of these individuals vary in not only job description, but age, with some graduating in the 80’s, some in the 90’s, others in the 2000’s, all 16 of these individuals share one thing in common: they have successfully carried their Gryphon Pride straight from U of G into the ranks of professional football.

For the first time in 20 years, the Gryphons embark on an OUA season as defending conference champions following their dramatic victory over Western in the 2015 Yates Cup. Offseason changes were highlighted by former Head Coach Stu Lang moving into an advisory role with the team. In his place steps former Defensive Coordinator Kevin MacNeill who has earned the title of Interim Head Coach and who will look to lead the Gryphons back to the national stage once again in 2016.

OFFENCE:

Quarterback James Roberts returns for his third season after a remarkable 2015 season in which he set a regular season school record with 18 touchdown passes. Although Gryphons All-Canadian receiver Jacob Scarfone will miss the 2016 season following an offseason knee injury, the Gryphons still boast plenty of offensive weapons around Roberts, highlighted by their explosive running back. Johnny Augustine enters his fourth year with the Gryphons and is coming off of a record-setting season himself. In 2015, Augustine recorded a single-season school record 12 rushing touchdowns. In the playoffs, Augustine produced one of the greatest postseason performances in Gryphons history when he rushed for 245 yards on 35 carries in an OUA semi-final victory over the Carleton Ravens. In the receiving core, expect return specialist Ryan Nieuwesteeg to have a more prominent role in the offence as he operates from the slot back position. Fifth year standout A’dre Fraser returns for his final year at U of G following a stint at the Montreal Alouettes 2016 training camp. Fraser’s presence in the Gryphons receiving core means that James Roberts once again will have one of the most dynamic receivers in the country at his disposal. Up front, the Gryphons lose veteran centre Matt Nesbitt but return CFL draft pick Kyle Fraser-Audit to lead a talented and youthful group on the offensive line.

DEFENCE:

Middle linebacker and reigning CIS President’s Trophy winner John Rush is gone. So too is fellow All-Star linebacker and now Toronto Argonaut Curtis Newton. Nevertheless, the Gryphons boast a defensive unit that once again has the talent and ability to be one of the top defensive units in the

country. All-Canadian defensive back Nick Parisotto returns for his third year, leading a game-changing secondary that is anchored by fifth year free safety Tristan Doughlin. In the linebacking core, third year man Royce Metchie provides the Gryphons with a rare combination of speed and power at the strong side linebacker position. At middle linebacker, the Gryphons will look to veteran Andrew Graham to lead the way, with the team’s reigning rookie of the year, Job Reinhart, providing terrific depth behind him. On the defensive line, the reliable Derek Drouillard returns for his fourth season and will provide pressure off the edge. Another player with the ability to get to the quarterback is St. Mary’s University transfer Matt Delmas. Delmas was an AUS All-Star with the Huskies in 2014 and is expected to contribute right away in 2016 in what will be his first year with the Gryphons. Another transfer who could make an immediate impact is defensive tackle and former Queen’s lineman Corey Flude. Leading the way on the interior for the Gryphons defensive line will once again be Donnie Egerter who is back for his fifth and final season. Overall, the Gryphon defence will look to build off a remarkable 2015 campaign in which they ranked in the top 10 in the country in almost every significant defensive statistical category.

SPECIAL FORCES:

When it comes to the return game, nobody does it better than Ryan Nieuwesteeg. In 2015, Nieuwesteeg racked up 846 punt return yards during the regular season. Not only did that number lead the country, it was also the second-highest single-season total in CIS history. Nieuwesteeg is back for his fifth season with the Gryphons and should once again have opposing cover units scrambling. Kicker/punter Gabe Ferraro returns for his third season to handle kicking duties following a sensational second year. In 2015, Ferraro made 15 field goals, tying him with Rob Maver’s 2007 mark for the third-most in school history.
