PORTFOLIO an exploration of MUTUALITY Xinlei Gu
Any relationship between all objects in the world can be called mutuality. Since majoring in landscape architecture, I pay more attention to the relationship between natural factors and human factors. When these factors restrict each other and have negative mutuality, I will explore how to change the relationship between these same factors to produce a positive result.

Extreme Flood in Guiyu in 2018
Waterlogging E-waste pollution
The largest electronics disassembly site in China
3
Strategy
mutual solution
Severe E-waste Pollution & Waterlooging Guiyu Town is the largest e-waste village in the world. It handles 10 million tons of e-waste every year. Electronic waste is sorted, and after disassembly, the useless parts are randomly stacked on the river bank. Heavy metal ions penetrate into the soil and then into groundwater and rivers. Many rivers are black, threatening the health of local people. Meanwhile, because of its low terrain, Guiyu Town is one of the cities with the most serious waterlogging disasters in China. The serious waterlogging makes Guiyu Town unable to develop agricultural economy. Therefore, even if there is serious e-waste pollution, electronic disassembly is still the largest economic chain in Guiyu Town. In a city full of pollution and disasters, purification and flood management need to be carried out simultaneously. Therefore, in this project, I will focus on the configuration of catchment lines and the combination of purified plants. What form of catchment line and what kind of plants can minimize pollution and waterlogging problems, but also have a certain degree of ornamental.

The site is located in the center of Guiyu Town, surrounded by multiple land use type. It should be of greater value. Therefore, in this project, I tend to reduce pollution by planting hyperaccumulators, alleviate waterlogging problems by creating catchment lines, and enhance the play experience by adding a three - dimensional road system. This abandoned land will eventually become a clean and resilient wetland in the downtown.

When it rains heavily, the water flows along the catchment line to the river course to solve the waterlogging problem.

historical building or residents' life pattern? 9
Strategy
M o ve w h a t i s happening in the building to the yard
A Unique Chinese Life Pattern “Tongzi" building, also known as Tube-shaned building, is a housing style with Chinese characteristics. It is the result of the tense housing distribution system of Chinese enterprises and institutions in the 1970s and 1980s. The long corridors, bathrooms and toilets are all public space, usually preceded by offces invarious units or dormitories for single workers. The courtyard in the center of a tube building is usually chaotic because of its small size and lack of proper management. Therefore, dirty and crowded is a summary of this living environment. However, with the continuous development of society, the legacy of the tubular buildings are mostly included in the historical protection of the building, in addition to the building itself, people want to protect the "life pattern" in the tubular building, which matches the old Chinese saying, "distant relatives are inferior to neighbors". Therefore, in the premise that the building itself can not be renovated and modified to explore the preservation of the living mode of the residents in the tubular building, we have to start withe the compound courtyard in the tubular building. Courtyard is the public activity space of residents. How to maximize the use of courtyard for residents is the problem that this project tends to explore and solve.
What's the POTENTIAL of the yard??
an exploration of mutuality / selected works 2014-2018
various problems accumulate CHRONOLOGICALLY
ACCESS SPACE After the elevator is abandoned, only stairs and corridors are left for residents. With the increase of the number of residents, the amount of debris piled on the corridor further reduces the access space.
PUBLIC SPACE With the increase of the number of residents, more and more public spaces become housing, and nowadays public spaces almost disappear. The central courtyard was also divided into fragmented pieces from its former whole.
LIVING SPACE
SITE
Today, the living space increases year by year. Apart from the stores on the first floor in the West and the public toilets on the north, the rest are for residents.
GREEN SPACE The central courtyard was once an English garden at the beginning of its construction. Since then, the courtyard has become a hard cement field to meet the various needs of the residents (such as drying clothes, parking, etc.). Today, only a small amount of potted plants are available.
PARKING SPACE
Longchang Apartment was built in 1920s and 1930s. It was designed by the British during the British Concession. The first name of Longchang Apartment is the patrol house on Gram Road. It is the office site of the patrol house in the public concession. The whole apartment is like a square barrel building like an ancient Roman Colosseum, with a spacious courtyard in the middle, like a large square surrounded by five-storey buildings with grey soil. After liberation, the south side of the patrol house became the office space of Yangpu District Public Security Bureau, while Longchang Apartment became the staff dormitory of the Public Security Bureau. Later, many people came in one after another. Most of them are office workers or businessmen in the vicinity. They move here because of the cheap rent and convenient transportation. It have maintained about 250 households all the time. Due to its unique historical role and value, Longchang Apartment in Shanghai was classified as an immovable cultural relic in 2004. 10
There is no designated parking space in the central courtyard. Vehicles are parked in disorder in the courtyard. And as the number of bic ycles parked in the courtyard increases, the parking space becomes smaller and smaller, and eventually parked crowdedly in the narrow space around the entrance.
INDOOR SPACE With the increase of residents, the living space of 40 square meters per household has been separated and reduced to 20 square meters. Residents built one more house in the corridor to increase their own housing area, so the corridor became more crowded.

By increasing the vertical space, the utilization space of the courtyard is greatly increased. Both motor vehicles and bicycles are parked in underground parking lot, which no longer affects the activities of residents in the courtyard. The courtyard has also changed from the first floor to the second floor and many functions have been implanted. Residents can spend more time in the courtyard to interact and communicate with each other to continue this unique Chinese life pattern.

three vulnerable groups in Anhui

a rehabilitation environment for these groups suffering from these diseases
Planning Concept rehabilitation community
Mines can benefit vulnerable groups As a large mining Province in China, Anhui has hundreds of abandoned Mines every year. After the mine was abandoned, most of the workers who used to work here chose to leave, but their physical and psychological trauma caused by heavy manual labor or some mine accidents could not be cured. Under such circumstances, abandoned mines can be used as a place for health care. When people who have been affected by the mining industry come back here again, they have an emotional sense of belonging, which is the feedback from abandoned mines. In this project, I tend to focus on three categories: retired coal miners, left-behind rural women and left-behind children. All three groups are vulnerable groups in China, they’re of great number and all have similar psychological and physiological problems (lung disease, physical injury, mental illness). In the context of weak rehabilitation awareness in China, this mixed rehabilitation of different ages, diseases and genders can play a positive role in promoting each group of people. Such a mixed mode eventually leads to a community model, and perhaps the patients are more likely to feel a normal social climate, reducing a sense of social disconnection.

The current situation of rehabilitation in Anhui can be summarized into three phrases: a huge group waiting to be rehabilitated, a weak sense of rehabilitation and poor rehabilitation conditions. When people find themselves sick, they simply choose to go to the hospital for treatment. Once their condition is under control, they stop treatment and continue their previous unhealthy lifestyles. Over time, the previous disease recurs. Only a small number of people choose to receive follow-up rehabilitation work in rehabilitation centers.

The service center is located at the entrance, where there are a series of infrastructure and entertainment venues. Community residents and tourists can choose to stay in the building for dinner, tea or a series of indoor social activities. They can also choose to play outdoor ball games in the stadium beside the building. If they want to gain a richer experience, they can take a break in the building and start exploring the whole mine.
B-3

Route B is mainly a river tour route. Residents and tourists carry out a series of water or hydrophilic activities around the purified tailings pond. After a circle around the lake, they can reach the rainwater garden at the bottom of mine.
ROUTE A A-1
A-2
ROUTE B B-1
Those who choose route B will first go to the dock, where they can take a boat ride to the open w a t e r a n d fe e l t h e p u r i f i e d tailings water at close range.
A-3
At the end of the corridor is the top of the hill and the commanding height of the whole site. Open vision not only meets the viewing needs of tourists, but also can effectively alleviate the mental illness of some patients and achieve better rehabilitation results.
Those who chose route A first slowly approached the top of the mountain along the corridor. The setting of gentle slope not only enables patients who need physical rehabilitation to get effective rehabilitation, but also makes it easy for patients who use wheelchairs to go up and down. The conserved mine can evoke the miners'memories and give them a sense of belonging.
Route A mainly travels along the orebody, reaching the viewing platform at the top of the mine through the spiral corridor along the orebody, and then to the skateboard park transformed from the original dump.
B-2
After leaving the dock, we arrive at the trestle and the small square. Faced with the quiet water, people can do morning exercises in the small square, watch open-air movies and play mahjong. There will be a very harmonious atmosphere of rehabilitation.
After coming down from the viewing platform, people can enter the skateboard park, which used to be a dump for rubble. Now it has a completely new look. After the earth heap and gravel have been reprocessed, it is now a sports ground for teenagers. Left-behind children who don't have their parents' company can have a series of interesting activities such as roller skating, rock climbing and make friends easily. They won’t feel lonely anymore.
B-3
Finally, people reach the rainwater garden at the bottom of the pit, where people can enjoy the beautiful scenery. What’s more, the garden can provide chances for leftbehind women and children to entertain and communicate. They can grow flowers together and help each other and won’t have negative feelings even without the accompanying of relatives.

A City Suffers From Flood Frequently Surabaya is located in East Java Province of Indonesia, is an important port in Indonesia, and one of the cities that suffered most from floods. According to records, Surabaya has an average of 30 flood disasters per year, even 70-80 in severe cases. Every flood is undoubtedly a blow to the urban economy and the quality of life of residents. In this project, we first explore the strategies to reduce flood hazards from the macro perspective of the whole city. We have redesigned the urban water system and green space to effectively guide the flow of water into the ocean. At the same time, we came up with a series of small strategies, and after evaluating each strategy, we put them in the planning. After that, under the guidance of the General Regulation, we selected a part of the city, combined with the small strategies we had come up with before and the surrounding situation of each plot to have a detail design

DECENT ENVIRONMENT !
By connecting rivers, rainfall can be effectively diverted and eventually introduced into the sea. And by reviving the green space, the infiltration rate of the city is greatly increased and the surface runoff is reduced.
Once residents could only have activities in a few parks in the city. Now with the increase of multi-functional green space and waterfront space, residents can have leisure activities throughout the city.

The site is located in the east of Sishui City, surrounded by dense residential areas. It is one of the areas seriously affected by waterlogging issue because of its low terrain. I tend to revitalize this wasteland as a wetland. It can not only provide leisure space for the residents around it, but can also help alleviate the waterlogging problem.

PERSPECTIVE VIEW THE RETURN OF FIREFLIES When the site was revived, it not only solved the problems of flood and waterlogging, but also provided better quality of life for the residents around the site. And when the ecosystem of this site is gradually improved, the rich tropical ecological landscape will become an excellent tourist spot, which may improve the economic situation of the city.
