all is here: the air is crisp, the leaves are turning and pumpkin is everywhere! This is one of my favorite seasons. I love the colour that fall brings to our trees. The river valleys are bursting with oranges and yellows and the leaves are starting to fall. This season gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling as we dress in layers, add scarves to our outfits and spend time with our loved ones. In this issue, our contributors have come together to bring you great advice on staying healthy through the holidays—in your diet, your body and your mind. Read Dave Doyle’s article to find out how to “get the funk out” and make the best of the season (page 8). If you’ve lost a loved one, don’t miss Suzanne Sagmeister’s article on grief (page 21). Suzanne says, “When we have lost someone, the holiday season can be the toughest time of year.” Once again, Shannon Boyne has provided us with delicious recipes. We have some scrumptious holiday favorites with a twist: all of them are gluten free and can easily be made vegetarian. You can find these starting on page 10.

STEPPING INTO FLOW CONSCIOUSNESS Recognizing the hypersensitive nervous system as a gift

M

y employees used to refer to me as “a little intense,” a Type-A controller and operations manager, hopped up on coffee, wielding an aggressive to-do list. At home, an organic farm and twoacre garden added to my roles of mom and wife. You could say I was a workaholic, but that would be polite. I was an intensity junkie with an out-of-control nervous system, wearing my dysfunction like a badge. From the time I was little, I’d had a hypersensitive sensory system. Floods of incoming energetic information would evoke a parade of racing thoughts and compressed emotions. I existed in a fearful and anxious state, oscillating between highs and lows. At their peak, worry and obsessive thinking would land in my toes as I unconsciously gripped the insides of my shoes while holding my breath. The chaotic energy inside of me may have been channeled into the roles I played, but it also split me in two, a different person on the outside than I was on the inside. Stress had anchored into my physiology, and its glandular imbalance made me deeply unhappy. Fortunately, I had a little voice in my head, my true-self guidance system communicating in audible statements and fully embodied knowing. Throughout my life this little voice has given me matter-of-fact information that is never wrong. By 2003, the little voice had shown me the unhealthy trajectory I was on and then illuminated an alternate path. I stepped onto it.

I shoved my business books to the side, replacing them with self-help, meditation, quantum physics, biology, intention, brain and energy medicine texts. I devoured information, letting one book lead to the next, testing the knowledge in practice. In 2007, I sold my possessions, gave up a six-figure income and set out travelling. Sedona, Egypt, France, Peru, Costa Rica and other destinations led me to sacred sites and practices ranging from yoga to breathwork, plant medicine to sexual healing, brain neuro-feedback to meditation. Surprisingly, as I placed one foot in front of the other, the sense of unknown calmed my whole system. When you remove yourself from familiar environments, you immerse yourself in the moment and naturally shift old patterns and programs. As practices of breath and kundalini yoga systematically opened my body, my awareness pinned itself to my physiology. I surfed the waves of my nervous system in every experience. This relaxed my nervous system while strengthening its ability to channel heightened energy and streams of incoming information. Nervous system health in turn led to glandular balance, which led to greater overall health and vitality. I became self-aware, embodied and younger; my mind, body and soul merged.


Once my awareness pinned to my physiology, my body revealed what was held in its cellular structure. Tensions and pains released memory and emotion. Postures shifted to release entire patterns of autopilot reaction. Conscious awareness in the experience allowed me to bypass conditioned reactions and replace them with mindful responses. I learned to rewrite my cellular programming. After a time, these processes became ingrained as my state of being, and my focus then shifted to inspired and pleasurable creations. Bliss, gratitude and humility filled an almost awe-like state of existence, as life took on wow-factor and I began to glimpse more of my true potential. Once in flow, my sensory system naturally moved my body and my focus toward that which would most benefit me. Right time, right place synchronicity is a natural by-product of flow. Things magically lined up as faith in universal interconnectivity became the fabric of every creation. I fell in love with everyone and everything. This didn’t mean that pain and disappointment stopped. They didn’t. But I could ride experiences consciously with a new ability to integrate what arose within them. I no longer braced against life. I met it with love and compassion for myself and for others, to the best of my ability, each breath. Society traditionally judges sensitivity as a dysfunction requiring correction and often medication. In truth, sensitivity is a sign of the greater human evolution. While medications can offer excellent support to re-establish physiological balance, we need to recognize the true gift of this heightened perception so fear can shift to curiosity and the constricted state of feeling separate and broken can shift to the expanded state of flow and connection. Awareness is meant to expand in, through and beyond the body. Sensitivity and the ability to receive information then knows no time, boundaries or limits. We can touch each other with our awareness, building relationships that are deep, intuitive and authentic. We relax and feel comfortable in our own skin. Sometimes I look back and marvel at how different my life experience is now. Then I promptly turn and humbly await the next wave of awareness, grateful to be alive.

GET THE FUNK OUT!

Transform your moods this season

C

ycles, seasons, waves. Ups and downs, ebbs and flows. Business, weather, moods, relationships or pretty much anything, it all moves in patterns. Once we understand this, we can prepare for these patterns and experience smoother transitions in life. In Northern Canada, many of us feel that subtle shift of energy from the summer high to the nostalgic feeling of fall and the dread of the coming cold, dark winter. Some of us are deeply affected by the winter blues. As we shift into winter, we might feel that things are going downhill. But we can transform that feeling into one of sailing down a snow-covered hill on a classic wooden toboggan on a sunshiny day. Through years of studying and practicing positivity, I’ve learned that we do have more control over our moods than we give ourselves credit for. The first trick is to understand and know this fact and the second is to practice “thinking on purpose.” Let’s start with how we can control our moods. Most people don’t give much conscious thought to their mood, especially when it’s leaning towards the negative. They just muck through, often allowing it to fester until circumstances smooth out or something great happens to turn things around. The challenge with this approach is that it is all external. The mood change is due simply to time or circumstance. What I’ve learned and practiced is that by increasing my awareness and consciously thinking about my mood state, I have control over how long I stay in that state. I can choose to transition into a better mood. So, how do we do that? We decide to. Decide that what you’re reading right now is the catalyst for you to pay attention the next time you’re in a funky mood. And then we practice. Imagine you feel knots of tension in your gut and frustration or anger welling up. Now imagine talking to yourself while this happens: “Hey, what’s this? I’m feeling funky all of a sudden. Hmm.” You are now aware of your mood. Next, imagine yourself standing four feet away and watching yourself—not trying to shut the mood off, but knowing it’s there and feeling it without emotion. Picture yourself just acknowledging it and seeing where it goes. Now that you are conscious of your mood, you can move on to changing it. Is this easy? No. Can you learn it on the fly the next time you’re in a funk? Not a chance. But can you apply it once you’ve practiced for a time? Absolutely! So how do we change our moods? By thinking on purpose. With that newfound awareness, talk to yourself again: “Okay, so I’m feeling funky. Do I want to feel this way? No? Great! Then I

8 www.guidedsynergy.ca

choose to let this go and shift out of this mood and into a better one.” Yes, this is ridiculously simplistic. It’s one of a million possible conversations you could be having with yourself at this point, but changing your mood is usually this simple. I used to let things bother me for hours or days. Now I can let go of them within minutes or hours. And all it took was time and practice. As the season changes, it helps to expect our moods to shift. We can be proactive and prepared to deal with that. Here are a few practical tips: • Be grateful. Look around and soak up the things that are beautiful and make you happy. It is impossible to have a negative mindset when we are feeling gratitude. • Break up the season with events or plans that you can look forward to—maybe a weekend getaway or a week or two in a tropical paradise. Having something to look forward to raises our energy. • If the long hours of darkness are getting to you, consider getting a light-therapy lamp. Sit in front of it for a few minutes now and then to feel like you’re in the sunshine. • Increase the time you spend with family and friends. Schedule game nights or social activities and make them a priority. Write them in your calendar. We are social beings, and spending quality time with those we care for ramps up our energy. • Get physical! Don’t become sedentary when the blues hit. This is the time to stay consistent with physical activity or even increase it. • Take some time for yourself. What floats your boat? It’s especially important during this season to remember to take care of ourselves and recharge. • Remember the importance of touch. If you’re in a physical relationship with someone, hug more, kiss more, caress more and have more sex. These are simple things to do, and just as simple to neglect. Be prepared this season by thinking on purpose and taking action to improve your mood. Now get the funk out by wrapping yourself in the afghan Grandma made and snuggling up in your favourite spot on the couch with a mug of cocoa. Acorn Squash Soup Gluten free, vegetarian (optional), nut free Let this delicious soup warm you up on a crisp fall day. If you use vegetable broth rather than chicken broth, this recipe is vegetarian. Serves 8 1 acorn squash, peeled and diced 4 carrots, peeled and diced 1 small onion, diced 1 small sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 garlic clove, diced 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon pepper 5 cups of chicken or vegetable broth 1 handful of rice 10 www.guidedsynergy.ca

Place all of the ingredients into a large soup pot and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and let the soup simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, until the vegetables become tender. Let the soup cool for 15 to 20 minutes. When cool, pour soup into a high-speed blender and blend on high until smooth. Add back to the soup pot and reheat. Serve warm. Maple Sweet Potatoes Gluten free, vegan, dairy free, nut free

This side dish will be a delicious addition to your holiday dinners.

Place sweet potatoes and acorn squash into a large mixing bowl. Drizzle coconut oil on top. Add maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon and sea salt; mix until all of the squash is covered.

Serves 6

Place mixture in a baking dish and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until squash is tender. Serve right away.

Pumpkin Pie Gluten free, vegetarian, nut free Here’s a gluten-free version of a holiday classic! Crust: 1¼ cup all-purpose gluten-free flour ¼ teaspoon sea salt 8 tablespoons butter 6 tablespoons ice-cold water Filling: 1 796 ml can pumpkin purée ¼ cup maple syrup ¼ cup coconut sugar 1/3 cup coconut milk 1 tablespoon coconut oil 2½ tablespoons arrowroot powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice ½ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon sea salt Coconut Whipped Cream: 1 400 ml can coconut milk, chilled overnight 3 tablespoons powdered sugar To prepare the crust, place the gluten-free flour and sea salt into a mixing bowl and mix until combined. Cut in the butter. Add the ice-cold water to the bowl 1 tablespoon at a time and mix until combined. Transfer dough to a piece of plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 F.

Place all of the filling ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Set aside. Unwrap the cooled crust dough. Place on a piece of waxed paper and cover with another piece of waxed paper. Use a rolling pin to gently roll it into the shape of your pie pan. To transfer the crust to your pie pan, first remove the top piece of waxed paper. Place your pie plate upside down on top of the crust and flip it all over. Gently remove the second piece of waxed paper. Use your hands to gently form the crust into the pan. Pour the filling into the pie crust. Bake for 60 minutes. The crust should be golden brown. Towards the end of the 60 minutes, begin to make your coconut whipped cream. You will use just the hard coconut from the top of the can; do not use the coconut water. Place the hard coconut into a metal bowl with the powdered sugar. Whisk until light and fluffy. Let the pie cool completely before serving. You may even put it in the refrigerator for a few hours before you serve it. Serve with coconut whipped cream. B

yron Deardoff, then the owner of an auto body shop, began to understand the importance of his health when both his parents died at a young age: his mother from a brain aneurysm at 40 and his father of a heart condition at 50. Byron made his health a priority when he could no longer ignore concerns of his own. He explored health-care options, which led him to find healing, to seek certification in natural health techniques and to practice in the natural health industry. He and his wife, Melody, are strong advocates for health. Master herbalist David Elliott was an important influence in Byron’s health journey. Byron attended a seminar in Edmonton where David taught about herbs and the importance of cleansing the body. A business relationship soon developed, which led David, Byron, Melody and partners to establish Avena Originals in 1990. With David’s expertise in herbology, their team developed herbal products that detoxify the body. In 1993 Byron and Melody sold their shares to start a new company, Future Essentials Inc., located in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. With his knowledge of the natural health industry and his parents’ histories in mind, Byron knew he had to take conscious action with regard to his own health. He flew to Selkirk, Manitoba, to meet and seek treatment from Terry Bell, a Sho-Tai practitioner. Sho-Tai encompasses a few techniques including electrical balance analysis, a straightforward and safe method of testing a person’s reflexes to look for structural, physical or nutritional deficiencies that may be causing or contributing to health problems. The results indicated that Byron’s liver was severely poisoned by chemicals and had reached a toxicity level of 68 percent. Terry listed about 25 symptoms related to liver toxicity; Byron had been experiencing all but one of them. These findings indicated a connection between Byron’s auto body career and his health: the chemicals in his workplace were poisoning him. Following Terry’s suggestion to naturally cleanse his bowel and liver to rid his body of the chemicals, Byron

began to feel better within a month. Four months later, new tests showed that his liver’s toxicity level had declined to 8 percent, and he was now experiencing only two of the 25 symptoms of liver toxicity. Beyond amazed, Byron asked Terry to teach him the Sho-Thai method. Byron became a certified Sho-Tai practitioner and iridologist in 1995, reaching a new height in his health journey. Byron’s practice at Future Essentials Inc. includes Sho-Tai, iridology-sclerology and muscle energy therapy techniques, plus a line of essential oils and supplements. Iridology and sclerology study different features of the eye, including colour, pigmentation, and fibre structures within the iris (iridology) and markings within the white of the eye (sclerology). These features reveal the strengths and deficiencies of corresponding organs and body systems. Muscle energy therapy improves the structural alignment of the spine. By contracting the muscles attached to a bone in the correct direction and then relaxing them, this technique helps to move the bone into its proper position. In his practice, Byron has found that most ailments are caused by chemical toxicity, parasites, harmful viruses or bacteria, or environmental pollutants that attack our bodies and make them sick. Over the last three years, he has focused on colon cleansing and on healing oxidative cellular stress. Oxidative stress to our cells causes inflammation, which in turn causes all disease. Byron believes that if we can cleanse our bodies of pollutants and harmful organisms and eliminate inflammation, our bodies will heal themselves. Over his career, Byron has travelled throughout British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. He now treats clients from communities in northern BC and Alberta in his new office in Grande Prairie. Byron continues to travel to Dawson Creek, Stony Plain and Lloydminster, and also works out of the company’s main office in Wetaskiwin. He and Melody hope to open an office in Red Deer soon. Asked what he has learned from his experiences throughout his health journey, Bryon says, “You really need to take care of your own health because nobody can change it but you.” Byron points out that our soil and food are depleted of

trace minerals and there are so many toxins and preservatives in our food that we can’t get away from them. So we need to cleanse our bodies to get rid of what’s built up inside of them. And Byron believes it’s never too early to start. Having treated children as young as two weeks old, he applauds parents who have the foresight to teach their kids about health and self-advocacy. “If you start on this now and stay focused, even if you’re 70 percent focused, you’ll be a different person and your health will be totally different,” Byron says. “We need to take care of our health; it doesn’t matter how young we are.” In addition to taking care of their health, Byron and Melody lead a very active life, which includes travelling, competitive super truck racing, camping and motorcycling. Family and friends are always a source of love and strength for the couple, and they enjoy spending time with their four children and eight grandchildren. Byron and Melody maintain that as long as we are on this earth, we are all called upon to be more. They firmly believe that we each have a purpose and passion, and they encourage others always to be grateful and inspired. MANAGING A FEAR OF HEIGHTS ON HORSEBACK Authentic travel in Kyrgyzstan

W

e mounted our horses to embark on a two-day ride through the Kyrgyzstan mountains, part of our family’s year-long adventure (see “A Great Big Trip Around the World” in the Summer 2017 issue of Guided Synergy). The girls had never been on a horse, so Kacela rode with me and Calais rode with my husband, Randy. As our guide led us away from the stables and towards the looming Kyzart pass, I wondered if we were crazy to be doing this with our young kids. The Kyzart was the lower of the two passes we would cross, but it still seemed pretty high, and the switchback made me queasy. I’m not great with heights to begin with, and I’m especially uncomfortable when my kids are involved. Add to that the lack of control of the horses and I was seriously questioning our decision. Fortunately—or unfortunately—we were already committed. I took a few deep breaths and resigned myself to following through. As I settled into the horse’s rhythm, I began to relax. The path was wide enough for a car (just), and the hill wasn’t as steep as I had anticipated. I tried to trust in the sure-footedness of the horse. The view from the top was spectacular, and I temporarily put my fear aside. The Kyrg mountains aren’t covered in trees; instead, they are blanketed with wildflowers and grass. Kyzart means “carpet,” and the mountains truly did look like they were covered with one giant carpet. But now that we’d reached the top of the pass, we had to get down the other side. At least on the way up I couldn’t really see how high we were unless I purposefully turned to look. On the way down there was no avoiding it. With each step, I jostled a little and held Kacela a bit tighter. It didn’t help that she was leaning forward as I was trying to lean back! After a few hours of lurching, adjusting my grip and occasionally holding my breath, we arrived at Kilemche Jailoo, a mountain pasture. The sun was just beginning to set and a sense of

peacefulness filled the air. It felt great to get off the horse and walk on my own two legs. And I was relieved to be at the base of the mountain rather than at the top. We’d all made it intact. Our yurt camp was nestled in the far corner of the Jailoo. With warm cups of tea in hand, we watched the animals graze and the children play as a chill pervaded the fresh mountain air. The girls played with our host’s grandson, leading their two puppies around as our host prepared dinner. They chased sheep, pet the horses and made up their own nomad game as they freely explored the valley. They played the way kids are born to play. This was no resort destination; it was authentic. The family we stayed with obviously makes money hosting tourists, but they’d be there with or without the tourists. They spend the summers with their herds in the mountain pastures and return to their village for the winter. Tourist dollars supplement their income, but are by no means their only source of money. Although it’s possible to reach the pasture with a four-wheel-drive vehicle via a very poor gravel road, it’s not easy. These summer homes have been accessed by horse and by foot for generations. On horseback, among the large herds of sheep and cattle, was how we were supposed to arrive. Travelling by vehicle would have been cheating, and the trip would have lost a lot of its charm. The high mountain passes on both the way in and the way out of the Jailoo tested my ability to manage my fear of heights. But the local nomadic life and the childhood joy we found there made every moment worth it. HOLIDAYS AND GRIEF Give yourself some TLC

I

t’s that time of year again. Warm sweaters, the smell of apples and cinnamon, leaves crunching underfoot and holiday decorations hitting the stores. But for many of us, fall and winter holidays also bring painful reminders of who is missing around our dinner tables. When we have lost someone, the holiday season can be the toughest time of year. After all, we learn from a very young age that holidays are about togetherness. I know the pain of the empty-chair feeling well, and having interviewed survivors of suicide loss, I know many others can relate. Those “me too” moments when we share our feelings of grief and loss can be some of the most comforting. Knowing that others belong to the emptychair club—a club none of us ever wanted to join—helps us lean into the pain instead of trying to conceal it. This, in turn, gives others the permission to do the same. Both how we grieve and how we celebrate are individual, but through my lived experience and my work, I have learned some helpful ways to take care of ourselves and those we love during such a difficult time. Talk: • Talk about your loved one, online or with family and friends. • Share your favorite story about your loved one and ask others to do the same. • Ask for help if you need it to get through the season. • Make an appointment with a counsellor or go to a grief group. Love: • Be gentle and allow yourself the space to grieve, cry and remember. • Hug the younger ones tightly and keep an eye on them. Children are often forgotten grievers. • Love yourself enough to say no to anything that doesn’t excited you. Give yourself permission to stay home, guilt free, from certain celebrations. • Cherish your loved one’s memory and allow yourself to be happy. Your happiness does not diminish how much you loved them or how much you miss them. Create: • Design a new tradition or ritual that honours the one you lost. • Create an online tribute to celebrate their life. • Make a list of holiday events that you want to attend. Ask a friend or family member to accompany you. • Cook your loved one’s favorite dish. Bring it to a potluck, share it with your neighbour or give it in your loved one’s honour to someone less fortunate. • Create a playlist of your loved one’s favorite holiday songs or other music. After we’ve lost someone we love, the holidays will never be the same. But they can still hold meaning despite our losses. Grief has its own timeline. As the holidays approach, one of the most helpful things we can do for ourselves is to share our feelings, fears, concerns and apprehensions with someone. Let people know what is difficult for you, and let the acceptance of help from others be the greatest gift you give yourself this season. SELF-CARE FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON Tips to keep your balance A

s fall turns to winter, our minds turn to the holidays: the time of year for shopping, extra cooking, and spending time with our loved ones. For some, this is a beautiful process of connection and exchange. For others, this time is filled with stress and dread. A little bit of self-care can help you make the most of the season. As we prepare for the holidays, many of us lose ourselves in busyness, forgetting to add our own well-being to our to-do lists. Self-care is vital in keeping you balanced in your mind, body and spirit. A healthy mind helps to keep you on track with the tasks at hand. Maintaining a healthy body means treating your temple with love and warding off seasonal flu bugs. A healthy spirit comes about through creating the space for emotional well-being, helping you to actually enjoy the holidays. Here are some tips to keep you balanced on all levels. Take a quick break to breathe. Find a quiet place to sit so that you have the space to focus. Any place where you can be alone will do. If you’re shopping or running errands, it can even be in your car. Now breathe deep into your belly. It helps to place your hand on your belly. Pull the air deep into your lungs, pushing your hand out. Take slow, deep breaths in and out, releasing your stress and worries. Just five to ten minutes a day can help you get centred into yourself once again. It also restores oxygen levels in your body, helping your body to relax and heal itself. You will sleep better, too. Start a daily routine of gratitude. Think of the best moment of the day and fill your being with gratefulness for that moment. It could be anything. Maybe you found the perfect dress for the company party; maybe a stranger paid for your coffee. Take a few moments to feel that gratitude. This helps you to stay focused on the good moments of the holidays and releases stress and anxiety, balancing your spirit and creating a space of joy. Give up expectations. This can be difficult for many of us. We have a picture in our minds of how the holidays should be. As humans, we sometimes want to control everything, to have everything just right, but the reality can be much different. The truth is that there’s no right way to share love with others and yourself. Let go of your expectations of how this holiday season will be for you—and of what you need to be for others. Let go of concerns so that you can be present in your life. Holding on to expectations causes you to check out of the here and now and dive into worry and stress. Be mindful of your presence, your thoughts and your expectations. This holiday season, make sure you include yourself on your to-do list! A

t a time when world consciousness is shifting, more and more of us want to stay away from fear, judgement and retribution and move into a place of love, compassion and understanding. When we do this consciously, we embark on a journey to become connected to wholeness. Many of my childhood experiences showed me that I was not what others thought I was, sending me on an expedition to learn about other things that were not what they appeared to be. Along the way, I discovered the voice activated hydration system (VAHS), a simple technology that allows the mind to find its quiet place. She has competed in multiple photography competitions, and is a published photographer with her work in various magazines. She is a mom and wife by day, creative mastermind by night. She is also currently completing her Business diploma. Being a family and portrait photographer, she has a drive for more creative photoshoots that challenge her with lighting concepts and editing skills.

In this project we combined body paint, photography, hairstyling, makeup on live human canvases. Our project focuses on the diverse scenery of Canada from coast to coast by incorporating the physical aspects of the human form. Within our artwork, we also included the culture diversity throughout our country through farming in the prairies, fishing on the east coast to skyscrapers in Ontario. We have also included the northern lights in the northern territories, sunsets in the prairies, and daylight in the eastern provinces. OVERCOMING STRESS WITH SENSORY DEPRIVATION Find relief by floating H

ow many things have you given your undivided attention today? We constantly face conflicting demands for our concentration, from both internal and external sources. We are continuously making distinct “yes” or “no” decisions about where our attention goes. It almost seems as though placing our full attention on one thing is a waste of time, and multitaskers are revered as the highest and most capable beings. But here’s the everyday reality: We go to work. We have important interpersonal relationships, finances and our workload to manage. Then, with one ring of our phone, our attention easily wavers from whatever we’re working on towards our Facebook account. I know, we all hate to admit it, but it’s true, right? By the time our mind lands at our desk again, the paperwork is piled higher, the phone is ringing, we have about two hundred emails to address—not to mention whatever dramatic interlude just occurred over text message. And back to work we go. What does all this spell? S-T-R-E-S-S. What if I told you that I’ve found a break from all this distraction and have regained the ability to shift my focus and better manage my attention? Earlier this year, I started floating. This is a type of sensory deprivation practice in which you are suspended in body-temperature water twice as buoyant as the Dead Sea. There is no physical resistance here—just the experience of being completely supported and weightless. You can truly feel (and possibly become) one with the atmosphere around you. With just one hour of floating a month, my life began to be simplified, and I quickly and effectively dealt with complications that arose. It wasn’t what was happening that changed; it was how and when I chose to deal with it. One hour with myself per month allowed me to better identify my truth and sharpen my focus on the core of things. This helped me to cut through distraction and face whatever issue was at hand as my calmest and most determined self. The science of float tanks stretches back to the 1950s, when medical practitioner and psychotherapist John C. Lilly began studying sensory deprivation, later termed restricted environmental stimulation technique (or REST). This technology was first used just to examine the effects of a limited sensory environment, but since then it has been widely covered in the mainstream media as a relaxation technique to treat a variety of stress-related mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Because of this, float tanks are becoming much more prevalent, even in smaller communities. People are experimenting out of curiosity and then finding their own truth through the practice.
