LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER T

he sun is finally shining, and the snow is starting to disappear after what felt like 49 consecutive winters in the Peace Country. I am so thankful to be sitting with my windows open and to hear the birds chirping as I write this.

This issue marks the end of my first year as owner and publisher of Guided Synergy Magazine. I have worked for the magazine for a total of five years over three different periods and have been thrilled to be at the helm for the past year. I am so grateful for all the support I’ve received from the community and from our suppliers, readers and advertisers. I am also grateful to Linda Warwick, the past publisher of the magazine, who originally hired me while I was in college. She believed in me and gave me my start in the magazine industry.

In February we hosted the Awaken Your Glow Retreat, and it was very well received by the community. We pride ourselves on facilitating retreats that support our readers and community members in learning about yoga, meditation, creativity and loving oneself.

As you might have noticed, this issue is labelled Summer 2018. But we didn’t miss spring, like Mother Nature almost did! We didn’t publish a Spring 2018 issue this year, because we have decided to start publishing the magazine a season ahead. In the past, our issues were released at the beginning of a season and were on the stands for three months. This meant that for readers who picked up the issue late in its release period, some season-specific information was already out of date. Now our issues will focus on the upcoming season, allowing you to plan ahead. It will be a little confusing this year, as we will have two Winter 2018 issues, one at the beginning of the year and one at the end, but by next year we’ll be back to one issue for each season.

This issue is all about families and festivals and has us looking forward to summer! We’ve gathered a list of festivals in the Peace Region area from May to August. Check it out on page 23. Be sure to get tickets early so you don’t miss out! We are most excited about North Country Fair, a one-of-a-kind family festival in a meadow deep in the boreal forest, where magic happens. Head to our Facebook Page in May for a chance to win tickets to this festival!

Festivals can be a great place for families and children, with workshops and kid-oriented performances. Amanda Syryda from Hula Hoop Circus is a regular festival entertainer. She gives us an insider’s view on page 22. And on page 25, Cara Jones provides great tips on how to choose and survive your first music festival with your children!

Jenna Trudeau is on this issue’s cover. Her story, on p. 16, about her career with Tupperware is inspirational. Jenna is a dedicated worker and is clearly passionate about what she does. Her hard work and “it’s totally do-able” attitude contribute to her great success with the company and her business. She believes in “the power of manifestation,” using vision boards for her business and encouraging her team members to use them as well.

With the new issue timeline, we had to take photos while it was still winter outside. The owners of a Grande West Builders home opened their kitchen to us, and Braeheid Gardens allowed us to take photos in their greenhouse. Our talented photographer, Liza Curtiss of Liza Curtiss Photography, truly captured the personalities of Jenna and her daughter, Ariya. Who knew that an entire photoshoot could be controlled by an adorable two-year-old!

HENNA SAFETY

What you need to know

F

or centuries, people from many cultures in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East have decorated their bodies with henna as part of traditional celebrations. This art form, and the knowledge behind it, is passed from one generation to the next. Today, henna is extremely popular outside of these cultures, a way to adorn oneself with a beautiful yet temporary design.

You can find henna artists on the street, at festivals, at amusement parks or in studios. You may get a design applied while on vacation. You can even do it yourself. While you can have positive experiences in any of these venues, it’s important to understand henna safety. Applying henna doesn’t require a class or apprenticeship, so there are undereducated and less-than-ethical artists out there.

Most henna artists are self-taught, and not all are educated about health and safety aspects of working with henna. Since most people in the West don’t use henna as part of cultural celebrations, we go to the internet for information. The International Certification for Natural Henna Arts is a peer-reviewed certification that anyone can take, and it’s the closest thing to an official certification program in the industry. But it’s voluntary.

When clients sit in my chair to receive henna for the first time, I ask a few questions before we start, to ensure they receive the best experience.

First, I ask whether they have allergies or sensitivities. I share the ingredients of my paste so they can make an informed purchase.

I ask whether they’ve had henna before, how that went and what colour the henna was. Some have had henna many times at fairs or festivals or have tried applying it themselves. Some got henna on holiday in Mexico, Hawaii or Thailand. Some get excited at the prospect of multiple colours. If they’ve tried it at home, I ask whether they mixed the powder themselves or used a ready-made paste from a tube. Why do I ask all these questions? Because unsafe henna practices can have unseen, longterm repercussions.

Henna is a shrub that thrives in hot, arid climates. Within its leaves is a magical dye molecule that can be used to stain the top layer of skin. The leaves are harvested, dried and ground into a very fine powder. When the powder is mixed into a paste, the moisture releases the dye, and the paste allows bold or delicate designs to be applied. Although many people call this a “henna tattoo,” it is not a tattoo. Henna is a stain applied to the top of the skin, while a tattoo is created with ink in the dermal layer.

Because henna is a natural herb, it has a shelf life. Both in powder and paste form, it loses freshness and staining power over time. Once mixed, paste will last for a couple of days at room temperature, but there is a slow demise of the dye. This can be slowed by mixing the powder with liquids of different levels of acidity and refrigerating or freezing the paste.

Preparing and applying natural henna is a slow process. It takes time for the dye to release. It takes time to mix and cone the paste. It takes time to apply (most applications are done free-hand) and for the dye to penetrate the skin for the deepest, darkest stain. Henna is the slow food of the body-art world, but it has been corrupted to fit into our fast-paced lives of instant gratification—to the detriment of our health.

Not all henna is equal and some can cause harm. Natural henna is never black. If the henna artist promises a colour other than red-brown or says that you can remove your paste in less than four hours, or if the paste smells odd, refuse application! These vendors use paste that contains preservatives and dyes not safe for skin, including gasoline, turpentine or, the worst offender, p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical found in most hair dyes.

When you’re exposed to PPD, you can become sensitized to it.

This can cause contact dermatitis, which can lead to infection and permanent scarring. Sensitization can also cause lifelong sensitivities to dyes including those in fabrics, inks and photographic products. It can even cause a life-threatening anaphylactic allergic reaction. PPD is toxic to the liver and kidneys and is a known carcinogen. In Sudan, where “black henna” is preferred for its fast, dark stain, instances of leukemia have risen dramatically, particularly in women.

Do-it-yourselfers can find shelf-stable henna that claims to be natural. These pastes are not safe either. If they contain any natural henna, they will also contain preservatives and dyes not approved in Canada as skin safe, as well as PPD. These cones are often imported from India, where labelling practices are not regulated like they are here, and the labels often don’t list harmful ingredients. If you’re purchasing henna for home use, remember that pre-made, fresh, natural henna needs to come to you frozen.

For more information about “black henna” and how to report it, visit the Health Canada website at the address shown below.* Your henna experience can be safe if you know what to look for: • The stain should be red-brown, never black.

• The paste should be made from a handful of easily identifiable ingredients. In addition to henna powder, common ingredients are lemon juice, water, sugar, tea tree essential oil and lavender essential oil.

• The packaging should list the ingredients. If in doubt, ask the artist to share their ingredients. Henna recipes are not secret; if the artist acts like they are, beware.

• You should be instructed to keep the paste on for as long as possible for a dark stain.

• For home applications, pre-made paste should be frozen so that it is free of preservatives.

Be wise, be informed, choose a reputable local artist to adorn you, and stay safe!

I

’m embarrassed to admit that I was a naïve child. I thought I would never be faced with adversity. I would become a mother, grow old with my husband and see the world, all in good health. I thought I was invincible.

Now how do I fix it and make it better?” Growing up, I had always been extremely stubborn and independent.

I wanted to do everything my way. I now know that the universe was preparing me for this challenge.

In November 2017, this plan I had created for myself came to a screeching halt. Several months before this, while cutting a birthday cake for a 102-year-old resident at work, I had first noticed something was just a bit off.

As my right hand grazed my right thigh, I noticed that the feeling in my leg was diminished. I continued on as if it were nothing, thinking my body was just reacting to a particularly stressful day.

Before my diagnosis, I was already exercising five or six days a week and eating decently, so I was lucky not to have to make dramatic lifestyle changes when I became ill. However, I believed I could be doing more. I found my disease fascinating and became obsessed with finding alternative methods to heal myself.

As the weeks passed, this sensation began to spread throughout my body. I continued to believe that the numbness was due to anxiety and that I needed to search for alternative methods to decrease my stress levels. I looked for help in many health food stores and sought the assistance of homeopaths, but no one could find me a cure.

Weeks turned into months, and I still continued to believe that anxiety was causing my numbness. Doctors tested me for vitamin B deficiency, but my tests came back fine. The numbness began to take a toll on both my physical and mental health. I spent many nights crying in the arms of my fiancé and screaming, “There has to be something wrong!” I approached my doctor for the third time. After I explained to her what was going on and told her of my concern that there might be something real here, she asked if there was a history of multiple sclerosis (MS) in my family.

There was no way I could have MS. She had to be wrong. I was only 25, and I had the rest of my life ahead of me. I hadn’t even had my babies yet. But to my surprise, the MRI came back positive: “multiple abnormal lesions in the brain particularly seen with T2 weighting, compatible with multiple sclerosis.” My world was shattered.

Suddenly I found myself trying to justify the possibility of such a diagnosis. I evaluated the list of common early symptoms: Tingling and numbness—yes, I had that. Fatigue—yes, that too. Bladder issues—yes, I’d experienced that. Cognitive problems such as foggy brain and difficulty finding words—yes, I definitely had that.

It was one of the most surreal moments I’d ever had. As I looked back on my life, I realized that the signs and symptoms had been right there, but I had been oblivious.

It was November 2017 when my neurologist told me that I had relapse-remitting MS. Without a doubt, these words were difficult to hear. However, I also found them motivating. I said to myself, “Okay, this is what I’ve got.

I decided to transition to a strict plant-based diet.

During a quantum biofeedback session, I discovered that I am gluten intolerant; therefore, I eliminated gluten and any foods that might cause inflammation in my body. I began to eat as many greens and raw vegetables as possible. I pursued alternative medicine formats and tried many types of supplements, such as Lion’s Mane mushroom capsules, curcumin and barley grass powder.

One thing that became clear to me as a result of all my research is the power of positivity. Our minds are amazingly powerful. I truly believe that what we put into the universe is what we get back. That’s why it is so important for me to maintain a positive attitude throughout this journey. My MS is going to be with me for the rest of my life. I can either resent it or embrace it.

I have chosen to embrace it.

MS has changed my life for the better. It has made me who I am today, a happier and healthier person.

Therefore, with every bone in my body, I am thankful for my disease. After many years of feeling shame about my own body, I love it once again. Not only is it fighting a progressive disease that is essentially killing my central nervous system, but it is thriving while doing so. I now appreciate the small things in life so much more than I did before. I don’t know where I am going to be in 10, 20 or 40 years, so it’s important that I live my life now.

It’s safe to say that I am no longer the naïve child who thought I would never face adversity or illness. However, I still know that I am going to achieve all my life goals.

Despite my disease, I am going to become a mother, grow old with my husband and see the world. I have MS, but MS does not have me.

PLAN FOR HEALTHY EATING

Tips to help you develop a strategy

A

s a mom of three, I know that making dinner at the end of a busy day can feel like a big inconvenience. Whether you work full-time outside the home or your days are packed with caring for your kids and volunteering, it can seem like a struggle to find time to feed your family nutritiously. And if you live on your own, it can be tempting to grab a bowl of chips rather than take the time to cook for yourself.

But if you have a strategy, healthy eating can be quick, simple and fun, and you and your family will feel so much better in your body, mind and spirit. It all begins with a plan—not simply a list of what to eat when, but a well-thought-out plan of what healthy eating looks like for you and your family and how to make it easy and enticing.

Here are some tips: Think about your habits when it comes to food. Do you tend to eat out because it’s Friday? Or go to Wing Wednesday? Do you skip breakfast?

Do you rarely have energy to cook in the evening? Identify your triggers for eating poorly and plan proactive actions to change those patterns.

Make a list of all the healthy foods you and your family are willing to eat. Write a plan to incorporate more of them in your meals for the week.

You’re more likely to stick with a plan if you physically write it out. If a three-day plan works better for you, then start with that.

Use the internet. Once you have a list of healthy foods your family likes, search for fast, appealing, nutritious recipes that use them.

Shop wisely. If possible, choose a time when the stores aren’t crowded.

Make a list based on your meal plan.

Planning saves you time and money.

Become a multitasker. While you’re preparing vegetables for dinner, prepare extras for school and work lunches.

Incorporate other healthy activities in your life. Take a family walk before or after dinner, meditate for five minutes each day or attend a yoga class. The more diverse your wellness plan, the more likely your family will adapt to nutritious eating.

Figure out what times are best for you to plan meals, shop and prepare food, and then add these to your schedule. Are you a morning person?

Take an extra half hour or hour to prepare lunches and supper when you get up. Or are you a night owl?

After you tuck your owlets into bed, prepare for the next day by making healthy lunches and snacks and chopping vegetables for supper.

Ask for help. Your partner or teenage kids might be able to do the grocery shopping. Younger children can help you clean, peel and pack veggies. Most kids love to help, and getting them involved can increase their interest in trying new healthy foods.

Talk with your family members about the importance of eating well.

Ask them what vegetables, fruits and other healthy foods they would like to try. Set a goal to try one new food each day or each week, and make a

This smoothie is a refreshing way to start a spring or summer day! If you use a plant-based protein powder or omit the protein powder, this recipe is also vegetarian.

Serves 2 2 kiwis 1 cup strawberries ½ cup vanilla yogurt ¼ cup oats 1 teaspoon chia seeds ¼ cup protein powder (optional) Place all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Serve right away.

Tip: If you are using organic kiwis and a high-speed blender, you can include the kiwi skin, as it’s high in fibre.

J

enna Trudeau is a driven and dynamic entrepreneur. She draws people in with her confidence and captures them with her authenticity. Through her passion for nutrition, Jenna helps people live a healthier lifestyle. Her love for family inspires others to live with purpose.

Jenna is the youngest child of Mike and Shauna Head of Grovedale, Alberta. She grew up on a farm alongside her sister, Terri, and her brother, Troy. The family is an entrepreneurial one, and her innovative father and steadfast mother have been driving influences throughout Jenna’s life.

Mike has been an entrepreneur since he was 18. Through a strong work ethic and positive mindset, Mike and the family have turned his business, Vieworx Geophoto, into a leader in construction and spatial data analysis. Jenna admires her dad’s determination.

“He’s always said, ‘You’ve got to want it!’ and ‘If you want it, you’ve got to just go get it!’” Jenna says. This advice is the foundation of her business philosophy.

When speaking about her mother, Jenna smiles. Shauna is “a confident and worthy woman who helps others find inner peace,” she says. “I’d like to be the same role model for my daughter.”

Her uncle, Greg Head, and her aunt, Kelly Darling, both self-employed, have also been constant sources of love and support. Greg has taught her that in business, “it’s all about the relationships and coming from a place of passion and authenticity.” Jenna has certainly taken this lesson to heart; she effortlessly embodies these qualities.

Jenna also values her connection with Kelly, who taught her financial independence at an early age. “When I was three, my auntie taught me how to say ‘I don’t need a man to make my money. I can make my own money,’ and that has stuck with me ever since,” she says, laughing out loud.

Kelly and her husband, Ben, have created a program called Warrior UP to Win, which empowers young athletes to develop healthy eating habits to support their sports performance and improve their lives. Jenna is on the advisory team for the program and describes her aunt as an inspiring motivator.

Jenna recalls a clean-eating challenge they completed during a trip to Hawaii when Jenna was 13. At the time, she didn’t care much about what she ate, but she did notice how well her body responded to healthier eating during their trip. When

she got home, she learned to prepare healthy school lunches, began meal planning and inspired others to eat clean, too. “That’s where my passion for nutrition came in,” Jenna reflects, “and that’s what has led me to work in nutrition.”

Jenna’s own entrepreneurial story began with a journey of self-discovery. At 19, she began a corporate career in downtown Calgary. But after a while, she realized that this type of job did not suit her personality. She chose to continue working while she pursued her passion in nutrition by enrolling in the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. At 21, Jenna graduated as a certified holistic nutritional consultant and moved back to Grande Prairie.

Jenna feels she was being directed by the universe in the days that followed. Shortly after returning to northern Alberta, she accepted a golf date with Nolan Trudeau, the man who is now her husband. On a whim, she applied to work at The Health Hut, a job that allowed her to network and continue her work in holistic health. And although she didn’t know how it would come about, her entrepreneurial spirit led Jenna to want to start a business in her field. She opened Wholistically Healthy that year, offering services in nutrition education and meal planning.

A couple of years later, as a new mom, Jenna decided to pursue a career with Tupperware. Jenna can schedule her work around the needs of her daughter, Ariya, and she can balance work and play. She and Nolan function as a team. He is “super supportive, super helpful and so easygoing with my work,” Jenna says.

Now two years old, Ariya is their little “Tupper Tot” and helps Jenna in the kitchen. Jenna beams as she talks about her daughter. “She’s my why,” Jenna says. “If it wasn’t for Ariya, I wouldn’t be where I am, and Nolan and I wouldn’t be where we are. She has brought a ray of sunshine into our life.”

Jenna’s mission at Tupperware is to help people save money, time and energy in the kitchen while they learn how to eat healthier. In true entrepreneurial spirit, she uses her product demonstrations to host clean-eating parties so that participants can benefit from her holistic nutrition training and meal preparation skills. In addition, she points out how these types of products are tools that can help people create a healthier and less expensive eating plan by enabling more efficient food preparation and proper storage.

“To eat healthy, you have to have a system,” she explains.

“I don’t do my holistic nutrition business anymore, but I have now found the tools that allow people to have that healthy lifestyle without having too much stress about it.”

Jenna approaches her work with a sense of fun and a commitment to customer service. She is happy to come to her customers’ areas and enjoys doing guest events. One of her favourites is Tupperware bingo.

This year Tupperware is celebrating 70 Years of the Party, and Jenna is celebrating too. She has been promoted to a leadership role, three-star director, because she has helped promote three directors on her team. And she’s not stopping there: her goal is to achieve five-star director status by year’s end. Since Jenna leads a team of about 200 people that is on track to exceed a million dollars in sales this year, it’s clear her momentum is building.

In addition to her family’s entrepreneurial influences, Jenna attributes her success to a belief in the power of manifestation. She uses vision boards for her business and encourages her team members to use them, too.

“I believe that if we have good energy, that positive mindset, and if we put it out into the universe, we’ll attract it back,” she shares. “It’s all in what we think and in what we believe.”

Achieving success through manifestation goes back to her father’s advice: You truly have to want it. Her team slogan, “It’s totally doable,” is a constant reminder that we achieve what we believe. Jenna believes that every day is a blank canvas, full of possibility.

“I’m in charge of my life; I’m in charge of my actions; I’m in charge of my excuses,” she affirms. “So I’m going to choose how I paint this canvas for this day or month or year.”

Jenna believes in sharing her visions with others, too. She discusses her business goals with Nolan “so he knows what we’re working towards as a family.” She explains, “It’s not just ‘Hey, look what I got.’ It’s ‘Look what we’re doing.’”

She insists that it’s important to “enroll others in your goals and passions. Doing that opens up possibility even more and leads to the next steps.”

Confident, authentic and passionate, Jenna has always wanted to work for herself. Her family’s entrepreneurial drive and experience have supported her down that path.

Now that she and Nolan have a child of their own, she has a new perspective. For Jenna, her purposeful work always returns to Ariya. “Every time I look at her I’m like, ‘Thank you, thank you for being in my life.’ She has transformed my life. She is the reason for everything that’s happened.

She is my complete why.”

and wait their turn. Once each child had picked up two packs of biscuits, they all quickly ran off to enjoy their prize.

As we walked up the mountain, a small village came into view in the distance. Bamboo huts dotted the hillside and peeked through the trees while fields of crops spread out around us at the lower elevations. The village children saw us approaching and began running to meet us. The fact that we had little blonde kids with us made us an extra-special attraction.

Watching the children’s small interaction with something from the outside world—and the joy it brought—made me wonder whether the next generation will be happy living the isolated life of past generations. How much longer will these communities exist the way they do now? Modern conveniences such as electricity and tin roofs are slowly being incorporated into everyday life. Traditional animistic beliefs are being phased out in favour of Buddhism. The shaman in this village has no apprentice, whereas in the past he would have had two. He’s the last, and his death will mark the end of an entire way of life.

ravelling in eastern Myanmar is like stepping back in time.

Shan State, bordering China, Thailand and Laos, is home to 33 related but distinct ethnic minority groups. Many live high in the mountains, and their villages can be reached only by trekking in with an experienced guide. They’ve remained largely disconnected from the modern world, and they seem to like it this way.

The children joined us as we walked towards the village, the number growing with every step. By the time we reached the house of our host, we had quite the entourage. They had come along partly out of curiosity, but mostly because they knew our guide had brought them treats!

After climbing the rickety stairs of the house, I made myself as comfortable as possible on the wooden porch. Our hostess poured me a cup of tea, and I sipped it happily while our guide handed out biscuits. He spoke the local language and had everyone sit quietly

Even with the shift towards modernization, village life is still strongly rooted in traditional culture. The change is slow, but it’s happening. As interactions with the outside world increase, time will tell what is kept and what is left behind.

LIVING THE QUESTION-MARK LIFE It’s a matter of trust

I

t is 2018 and I am writing this while sitting beside the pool of my hostel in Bali. If, in 2014, you had asked me whether I would give up the securities of my life, I would have thought you were crazy. Yet just four years later, I am sharing my story of how I have let go of my comforts so I can live a lifestyle in which I don’t have any plans.

My family and friends often ask me, “So now what?” I put my index finger in the air and draw a question mark. Truthfully, I don’t have a clue.

A few years ago, saying I don’t know made me uncomfortable. I was the kind of person who always had a plan and a back-up plan.

So how did I go from needing to know every detail to travelling to different countries with no itinerary, maps or research? One word: trust!

Trust in humanity With all the news reports showing the worst of the worst in the world, it’s easy to get caught up in fear. But one of the many gifts I’ve gained travelling all over the world is learning that some of those news reports are incorrect. I’ve discovered that many people, of all nationalities, genders, religions and cultures, are very good humans.

They are not trying to harm each other—or me. Instead they offer meals, a safe place to sleep, a shared taxi and more. You can find these people not only in hostels around the world but also in your own backyard. To live the question-mark life is to truly believe that the majority of people, not the minority, want you to be taken care of.

Trust in my higher power On my travels, people have asked me if I believe in God. I often reply that I believe in spirituality but support religion, because I think it’s healthy to believe in something bigger than ourselves. And there is no way I could be living the way I do without complete

trust that someone is watching my back! I don’t just mean that I am protected while I’m travelling. I feel a bigger sense of trust that everything that happens—whether I like it or not—does so for a reason, so that I can learn from the experience.

To live a question-mark life, you must hand that trust over and know that your higher power has a plan. I am a visually oriented person, and someone once described this unique trust in a way that I could understand. I have a serious dislike of heights, including ladders and cliffs. Trusting in myself means that I know I can walk across a high wire, but trusting in my higher power means putting myself in a wheelbarrow to get pushed by him (or her) to the other side. The first time I heard this metaphor, I got so nauseated with the thought that I almost lost my cookies. Years later, I can eagerly, for the most part, climb into that wheelbarrow because I know something better awaits me on the other side.

Trust in myself I mentioned trusting in myself when I am walking the high wire.

Not everyone has that faith in themselves. Most humans overthink, overanalyze and get overly emotional. I believe that your head and your heart will lie to you, but your gut always tells the truth.

Sometimes that gut response is your higher power trying to talk to you, but most of the time it’s you, and only you, trying to have a serious conversation with yourself.

Although the trust I have in myself and in the things I do and say does not always make sense to others, I know that everything will work out the way it is destined to happen. In April 2017, I told my mother that I was giving up the security of having a government job to go back to after my travels. I said, “When have I gone without in my life? I know it is all going to be okay.” A year later, I still don’t have a plan, but I can tell you that I have not gone without. The fact that I’m sitting at the poolside in Bali right now is proof of that.

My life truly is a giant question mark on so many levels, but I am following my dreams. I encourage you to follow yours. Trust, trust, trust!

A

s an entertainer, I have the amazing opportunity to work at a variety of fun and exciting festivals each summer. I began attending festivals as a hobby in 2007. Later, I went as a volunteer, and now I get paid to work at festivals—my dream job! I frequent three kinds of family-friendly festivals: music festivals, street performer festivals and children’s festivals. Each has its own focus, so consider exploring a variety of festivals this summer.

Music festivals offer so much more than music. They allow you to experience a culture of art, music, movement and community.

Some are family friendly; some are not. Two that would make a great family vacation are Astral Harvest Music and Arts Festival, an electronic music festival, and North Country Fair, a folk music festival. Both are located near Driftpile, Alberta. Attending music festivals can be like camping with entertainment, and it can be as social or as secluded as you’d like. Arrive early to get a shady spot in the trees or bring your own shade structure. Don’t forget the ear protection and an umbrella (for rain or shine).

If you’re planning to take your family to a music festival, check to see if they have a kids’ stage or family fun area. At a kids’ stage, there will be music suitable for kids, while a family fun zone will likely offer activities. The family fun zone at Astral Harvest, which I coordinate, provides activities for children and families, including a potluck, face painting, movement workshops and more. Parents must stay with their children and are welcome to participate in the activities. This is a lovely way to learn, play and make memories with your child.

Street performer festivals are all about entertainment—and that chip on a stick; nothing beats a spiral potato! In addition to the circle shows, these festivals often have roving characters.

Most of my experience working at these festivals has been as a roving character, adding to the atmosphere and experience by dressing in costume and interacting with attendees. When you encounter a roving character, play along! This might mean pretending that a camping tent is alive and someone’s pet, or dancing around as you get sprinkled with rainbow magic. When you play along, it’s more fun for the rover, for you and for your children. Most roving characters are more than happy to pose for a photo with you or your child, and tips are always welcome.

Children’s festivals focus on both entertainment and education.

In 2017, I had the opportunity to perform my 45-minute solo show at the Grande Prairie Children’s Festival. Usually, each act has a theme, such as bullying, different cultures or music. Based on my experiences pursuing hoop dance as a career, my show is geared towards encouraging kids to find their passion, dream big and work hard. Children often attend these festivals with their school, and families can usually attend as well. Make sure to see a stage act and participate in the onsite activities to get the full experience.

No matter which kind of festival you attend, go with an open heart and an open mind. Try new things, be open to new experiences, embrace your inner child, laugh, dance, eat, rest and then repeat.

Amanda “Panda” Syryda, owner and founder of Hula Hoop Circus, is a pioneer of hoop dance within Grande Prairie. She’s an entertainer, a circus skills instructor and the author of the illustrated children’s book Mandi the Clown and the Hula Hoop Circus. The book, based on her original performance character, was inspired by her work at the International Children’s Festival of the Arts in St. Albert in 2014. GOING TO MUSIC FESTIVALS WITH KIDS Tips for a good experience

I

fell in love with music festivals in my twenties. At festivals, I felt free and accepted. As I danced to the music, I felt connected to the people around me. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know them personally. I knew they shared that feeling of connection. It was bliss.

I vowed that one day, I would take my child to a festival. When my son was six years old I took him to the Evolve Festival near Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Although there was a family campground at the bottom of the field, away from the main stages, we didn’t camp there. I didn’t take him to the festival during the evenings. I felt it was too intense for kids, with young people experiencing all kinds of new highs. It felt unpredictable and that frightened me. Fortunately, because the festival was in my home community, I could send my son to a babysitter in the evening, but not all parents have that luxury.

As I attend festivals now, in my later years, I see how they have become more family friendly. At the Astral Harvest last summer in Driftpile, Alberta, I experienced what bringing kids to a festival looks like today. It was on a completely different level from that first festival I went to with my son. The kids were an important part of the scenery, and because of that the energy was much calmer than at any other electronic dance music festival I have ever attended.

The kids were absolutely adorable. Some were decked out in Wolverine costumes; others were dressed as little raver girls, mermaids or fairies. The parents were engaged with their kids, often dressed in the same costumes and dancing alongside, making sure their kids’ ears were protected with noise-cancelling headphones. The other dancers respected their space while cheering them on.

I talked with a dad who was dancing with his 6-month-old son in his arms. I asked, “Do you ever wonder whether, if you stop coming to festivals, your son will remember the land of mermaids and superheroes?”

“I sure hope so!” he responded. We both smiled at the people dancing around us, all expressing themselves in their unique ways.

Music festivals let you listen to great music and connect with a loving community, and being prepared will help you and your family navigate this incredible experience with ease. Here are a few suggestions to help you: Do your research. Either go to the festival first without your kids to determine if it’s the right scene for you and your family, or join a forum of festival parents to get tips on what to expect. You can also call the festival organizers to get insight into the vibe of the festival.

They are usually very helpful.

Consider a camper instead of a tent. Not everyone can afford a camper, but for a three-day festival with children, consider renting one.

A camper provides a comfortable place to get out of the sun, take a nap, escape inclement weather or give your ears a break from the noise.

Bring ear protection. Festivals are very loud and can damage your eardrums if you don’t take precautions. Little eardrums are even more sensitive. Make protecting your kids’ ears more enjoyable for them by decorating their headphones or buying ear protection with some style.

Lastly, have fun! Create memories with your kids by loving life and dancing in your bare feet in the grass. Your children might hold on to those memories the way you do, and might one day continue the tradition with their own families.

our chakra system consists of the seven main energetic points through which energy flows. The state of your chakra system affects your mental and emotional well-being. A balanced chakra system offers you a relaxed, productive and aligned energy in which to live your life.

The Throat Chakra is your voice, both inside and out. It’s not hard to guess what activity is best for this: singing! It doesn’t matter whether you sing in the shower, in the car on your way to work or at karaoke night with friends. Let your voice be heard in a loving way.

There are many ways to balance and cleanse the chakra system.

Here are some activities you can do for the benefit of each of your chakras.

The Third Eye Chakra is your intuition, as well as your imagination. Engage in activities that are imaginative or help you think in a new way. Invite your family and friends over for a game of charades, get a book of problem-solving games and puzzles or simply fantasize about your next vacation. Anything that gets your imagination going!

The Root Chakra is your root or grounding. The best activity for this chakra is earthing, or connecting to the Earth with raw touch.

Dig in the sand with your hands or play in a mud puddle. Connect to the Earth through your hands or feet, or dive right in and have a full mud bath.

The Sacral Chakra is all about creativity. Get creative and have fun. Break out the paints and paint brushes or pick up a crayon.

Express yourself through doodling. Allow your creativity to flow, with no judgment. You do not need to be a Picasso to colour!

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the seat of your self-esteem and personal power. The best activity for this chakra is laughing.

Watch silly videos, go to a funny movie or simply laugh! Laughter can help you reconnect with the lighter side of life—and with yourself.

The Crown Chakra is your higher connection to self. The best activity for this chakra is meditation. Find quiet moments in the day to sit, breathe and relax. Healthy and restful sleep is also important for this chakra.

Most of these activities can be done with friends or family. They are easy and fun ways to balance yourself and your daily living.
