Head to page 14 to read our feature on the inspiring Tryna Gower. I’ve been honoured to cross paths with Tryna several times over the past year. We originally met at a health and wellness expo in her hometown of Dawson Creek. I had just taken over the magazine and was eager to get the word out. She was so receptive of my excitement and plans for the magazine that she jumped on board as an advertiser. Later that year, in May 2017, Guided Synergy was a sponsor of the be. real Conference that she founded.

Tryna’s roots are both Indigenous and European. In her interview with Kalyn Sloan, Tryna says, “The role I’ve
been assigned is to marry and merge the two cultures, to take the hand of both and walk in the middle to teach the other both sides, so both can feel safe and both can understand the other.” This role was much in evidence at the be. real Conference. The city of Dawson Creek came together for this one-day conference, where we were inspired and moved, surrounded by wonderful like-minded people celebrating two cultures. We’ll celebrate the launch of this Winter issue at the be. real Centre on February 2, 2018. Tryna will be hosting a fun and interactive evening. Please stay tuned to our Facebook page for more details. I invite you to the first ever Awaken Your Glow Retreat! Join us on February 24 and 25, 2018, at the Pomeroy Hotel in Grande Prairie. The goal of the retreat is for you to “transform, breathe, relax and indulge.” The weekend includes three nourishing meals, five life-changing workshops and yoga classes to awaken your glow, as well as a keynote speech by Shannon Kaiser. If you can’t attend the entire retreat, the Awaken Your Glow Wellness Market will be open to the public. Retreat details and market hours can be found at www.awakenyourglowevents.ca. This year, I challenge you to stop thinking about the changes you want to make and actually do them! I hope Guided Synergy will be part of your journey. Much love, Chelsey Boyne, Publisher

HEALTH
SELF-ADVOCACY: FIGHTING FOR YOURSELF The importance of being on your own side
I
remember a time when I fought relentlessly. I fought against my body, against others’ doubts, against the changes that illness brought into my life. But in all that time, I never fought for myself. Self-advocacy is difficult to learn, but it’s life changing. Maya Angelou once said, “I learned a long time ago the wisest thing I can do is be on my own side, be an advocate for myself and others like me.” This is the story of how self-advocacy became an integral part of my healing and led me to be on my own side. I am a 25-year-old woman from Northern Alberta who is currently recovering from multisystemic infectious diseases. During outof-country travel in my late teens I contracted several bacterial infections, including borreliosis, or Lyme disease, and bartonellosis. These bacteria are insidious, and their infections often imitate other serious illnesses. Consequently, they are often misdiagnosed or overlooked, and better diagnostic measures are being sought by medical professionals and patients alike around the globe. In my case, it took more than seven years to receive correct diagnoses; during that time I was medically mislabelled on many occasions. At first, the symptoms steadily creeping into my life were easy to explain away. But soon I began to struggle with them, then I became alarmed over them, and eventually I let them consume me. Everyday tasks such as taking a shower, walking up stairs and preparing a meal became monumental—often insurmountable— challenges, due to my painful and overwhelming symptoms. These illnesses affected me not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I had to give up my business, put other dreams on hold and temporarily stop driving due to the unpredictable fluctuation and severity of my symptoms. Not so long ago, I had been a strong, vibrant and self-reliant young woman; now I had to rely on help for almost everything. It felt like I had no control over my body or where my life was heading. Watching myself get worse and experience more and more loss was demoralizing. Falling through the cracks of the medical system for so many years led me to some very dark places. I began to question my own sanity—were my symptoms even real? Was it all in my head? I felt lost and trapped in a downward spiral. I was hopeless and for a period I truly believed that maybe I wouldn’t ever heal. Eventually I realized that nobody had all the answers or could swoop in and do the healing for me. I had to change my own circumstances by helping myself. I was finally ready to take steps towards self-advocacy, and it transformed my journey completely. Thankfully, I have amazing people in my life who believed in me, supported my vision and wouldn’t let me give up. They reminded me often how powerful I was and helped me to understand that I had the ability to do something about my circumstances, even if that meant shifting my focus from fighting against what was wrong with me to taking whatever actions I could to actively heal myself. They helped me to believe that I was resilient enough to stand back up,
6 www.guidedsynergy.ca
and that gave me the final push to start self-advocating. This process began with understanding what self-advocacy is. Advocacy is actively supporting a cause; self-advocacy, then, is actively supporting one’s own cause. This raised some questions. Exactly what was my cause, and what was I able to do to start supporting it? Embracing self-advocacy allowed me to shift my energy in an immense way; I no longer wasted my efforts battling limitations but instead chose to take actions that supported my cause, which was to have a voice in my healthcare, learn about the implications of my illness and find the healing implements that worked best for me. Self-advocacy forced me to bravely surrender to what I could no longer control and gave me the opportunity to become a fully involved participant in my own recovery. Things did not get better immediately. I had to work hard and make significant changes. But the more tools I discovered and the more informed I became, the less daunting the challenges felt, and I started to develop a renewed sense of hope and motivation. Little by little, I regained stability by taking small actions towards my selfadvocacy goals. Last spring I visited a specialist in Calgary who determined that my symptoms and brain scans indicated some type of bacterial systemic infections. There were also markers for inflammation in my brain that could be infection related. The specialist requested immediate testing, and a month later I got undeniably positive results for both illnesses. I was delighted and relieved—I finally had my answers and validation. I dove into a full-time healing protocol involving a range of medicines, lifestyle modifications, at-home treatments, detoxifying and major diet revisions. It hasn’t been easy, but the techniques I learned through practicing self-advocacy have led me to persevere. I am now six months into my regimen and seeing huge progress in overcoming my illnesses and regaining my health. On my good days, I feel better than I have in years. Edward Everett Hale said, “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” If you are struggling in your journey, ask yourself the hard questions. What is your cause? What are you willing to do about it? Find the something that you can do, even if it is small, and use it to begin fighting for yourself. Believe that it’s worth it, that you are worth it. It’s the kindest gift you can offer yourself in this new year. Heather Danielle Ulrich is a Grande Prairie woman who is currently undergoing treatment for two multisystemic infectious diseases and writes about her healing journey with these illnesses. When not recovering, she can be found spending time with her cats or going on nature walks. She dreams of writing a memoir one day on the challenges she has faced.

FITNESS
7 STEPS TO A CONSISTENT STRETCHING ROUTINE Set yourself up for success
T
hroughout my fitness journey, I have always had trouble being consistent with stretching. But spending so much time in the gym requires rest and recovery to make sure my body is functioning properly, and stretching is an important part of that. So I have followed a set of simple steps to create a routine that’s enjoyable and easy to remember. You can do the same! A consistent stretching routine can help you gain flexibility, reduce tightness throughout your body, improve your posture, improve form and performance during your workouts and reduce stress. Follow these seven steps to build your own stretching routine. 1. Pick stretches that you enjoy doing. If you try to force yourself to do stretches you don’t like, you probably won’t stick with it. Instead, choose stretches that make a difference in areas you want to work on and that you enjoy doing. This will help you stay motivated. See the list to the right for some ideas. 2. Do the same stretches every day. If you don’t know in advance what you’re going to do, you may find yourself on your mat not doing anything! Keep your routine easy to remember by doing the same stretches every day. 3. Pick a time that works for you. You’ll be more consistent if you pick a time that fits your schedule. I prefer to get on my mat after my workouts. It gives me a proper cool-down and is very relaxing. But you might not have the extra time to stretch after a workout. Try doing it on your lunch break, or in the morning as a great start to your day. 4. Stretch at the same time every day. When you stretch at the same time every day, it becomes a habit in your daily regimen, not a chore or a hassle. 5. Ask one of your peers to keep you accountable. Stretch with someone or find an accountability buddy to text or call when you’ve completed your stretches. You’ll feel good reporting your progress! 6. Have a specific stretching space at home. Buy a mat and create a comforting space in your home. This will help you see stretching as a relaxing routine to look forward to and you’ll be more likely to take the time to stretch. 7. Keep it quick and simple. If you’re stretching every day, you don’t need a long routine. I stretch for 10 minutes. If my routine were any longer, I probably wouldn’t take the time. But if I’m feeling sore and have extra time, then I will do some additional stretches. Jaycee Neudorf is an online fitness coach with a diploma in exercise science and training in rehabilitation. Here’s the stretching routine I do on a daily basis. It’s a quick and easy program. Try it out! Child’s Pose • Kneel on your mat, feet together and knees spread apart. • Bend forward and stretch your arms over your head, placing your hands on the ground shoulder-width apart. • Hold for 30–45 seconds. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Toe Touch Stretch • Sit with your legs straight out in front of you, feet hipwidth apart. • Stretch forward and place your hands as close to your toes as you can while maintaining a neutral spine. • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 1 or 2 times. Butterfly Stretch • Sit with your knees bent and the soles of your feet touching each other. • Grasp your feet with your hands and place your elbows on your legs. • Push your legs down with your arms until you feel the stretch. • For a deeper stretch, bend forward or place your arms on the ground. • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Pigeon Pose • Start on your hands and knees. Move your right knee forward so that it’s behind your right wrist and place your right ankle in front of your left hip. • Straighten your left leg behind you and point your toes. • Keep your hands on the ground or rest your arms on the ground. • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 1 or 2 times and then switch legs and repeat the set.
Hurdler’s Stretch • Lying on your back, lift your legs and bend your knees so that your shins are parallel to the floor. • Bend your right leg; bring your right foot towards your chest and rest it against your left thigh. • Clasp your hands around your left thigh. • Hold for 1 minute. If this stretch is painful, hold for 30 seconds and then repeat. • Switch legs and do the stretch on the other side. Arm Stretches • Lift your right arm up over your head. Bend at the elbow and hold with your left hand. • Lower your arm and straighten it across the front of your chest. Hold it with your left hand. • Hold each position for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Repeat 1 or 2 times and then switch arms and repeat the set. Wall Stretch • Stand close to a wall, with our body at a 45-degree angle to the wall. • Bend your right arm at the elbow and place against the wall. • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 1 or 2 times and then switch arms and repeat the set. Downward Dog • Start on your hands and knees, with your shoulders over your wrists and your hips over your knees. • Walk your palms forward and spread them flat. • Raise your knees off the mat; shift your stomach back towards your thighs and lift your hips, forming a triangle. • Keeping your legs straight, push your arms towards your toes. • Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 1 or 2 times.

3 RAW VEGAN FOODS YOU SHOULD TRY Don't pass these by
A
s you walk through the aisles of the natural food store, you might be walking right past foods that could improve your diet and your health. Sometimes it’s hard to know what those unfamiliar foods are or how to use them. I’ve been raw vegan for almost six years, and the three foods that I introduce here have been staples of my diet. They share many qualities. First and foremost, they’re delicious in raw form. A little soak is usually all they need. Second, they are all gluten free. Third, they contain resistant starch, so they help curb your appetite. Fourth, they are bursting with nutrients. Teff, for example, is a complete protein, and all three of them have been called superfoods. And finally, you can find them in most natural food stores.
Teff has a lovely mild flavour, so it’s equally good with sweet and with savoury toppings. It’s available as grain or ground into a flour. However, if you want to enjoy teff raw, you’ll want it in flour form. Simply soak the flour overnight. In the morning, just add some fresh berries and melted coconut oil and enjoy one of life’s little pleasures. Naked oats are not ashamed, even though their hulls fall off easily! They know they’re better than regular oats. You can get more nutrients out of naked oats than out of regular oats because they are sold raw and you can sprout them. Regular oats have been heated before hitting the shelves to prevent them from going rancid, so they can’t be sprouted.
Tigernuts are not nuts at all, nor do they have stripes! Rather, they’re the tubers of Cyperus esculentus, or yellow nutsedge grass. Wrinkled and not particularly impressive looking, they grow underground and are also called earth almonds, which I think is much more suitable.
But naked oats taste just like regular oats. For a hearty breakfast, soak the whole grain for 24 hours. In the morning, add whatever you would usually add to your oatmeal. For an instant milky meal, grind the grain in a coffee grinder and mix with warm water.
To me, tigernuts taste like candy. Specifically, they remind me of the inside of a truffle candy. Granted, I haven’t had truffles for a long time, but tastes stick with you for life.
While tigernuts, teff and naked oats are flavourful by themselves, adding them to your favourite desserts, salads and soups will make your meals even more irresistible. Your imagination is the only limit!
You can eat tigernuts right out of the bag, which makes them a perfect on-thego snack. If they are too hard for you, soften them by soaking in warm water for three to five hours. You can also buy tigernuts ground into a flour. For a dessert-like breakfast, simply mix this flour with warm water. Teff is for the tough! This is not far from reality, as this iron-rich grain is a main source of carbohydrates for Ethiopian endurance athletes. In fact, people in Ethiopia have been eating it for more than 3,000 years.

WALKING IN TWO WORLDS
A Catalyst for Change INTERVIEW AND STORY BY KALYN SLOAN PHOTOS BY LAURA REYNOLDS
F
or 20 years, Tryna Gower built a reputation as a respected and talented photographer and businesswoman in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Her skills and entrepreneurial passion were recognized time and time again. In 2009 her business, Tryna Gower Photography, was named Business of the Year in the British Columbia Achievement Foundation’s BC Aboriginal Business Awards. In 2012, Tryna rebranded the business as Studio TGP and expanded her services dramatically. Over the next five years, the business flourished through her hard work. But in the summer of 2017, Tryna was compelled to sell the business to begin an entirely new career. It started with a pact she made with her grandmother and required her to step into a new version of herself. Tryna is the granddaughter of a Cree woman and a white man. Growing up in a traditionally Cree home, she was extremely close to her grandmother, the mother figure in her life. Her great-great-grandfather—a member of the Bear Clan—and his family were originally from Snipe Lake, Alberta. Tryna was raised around drumming and song, but also around financial hardship and alcoholism. When she was six years old, Tryna was struck by a drunken motorcyclist. Her leg and hip were crushed, and she had to relearn how to walk. After the accident, everything at home changed. Her grandparents stopped drinking, they left all their friends and moved across town, and they abandoned their traditional Indigenous lifestyle. As Tryna says, her grandmother also stopped “doing anything Native.” She stopped speaking Cree and refused to share Cree culture with her grandchildren. “My grandmother believed all traumas and tragedy were in the Native lifestyle,” Tryna explains, “and she was trying to eliminate that lifestyle from the family.” Tryna’s grandmother used to jokingly call her grandchildren “half-assed Indians,” but they were now being raised “the white way,” her grandfather’s way. 14 www.guidedsynergy.ca
FEATURE STORY
As Tryna grew older, she became quite fascinated by Cree culture but didn’t have any resources to turn to for information. This changed when Tryna Gower Photography began receiving work with Indigenous companies in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Suddenly Tryna found herself taking photographs in sacred territories, spending time inside council offices and being introduced to the beauty of Indigenous culture. She even received her first Indigenous nickname, “White Eye.” Feeling blessed, she marvelled at how, despite her grandmother’s work to keep her ancestral culture from her, it had found her anyway. In the years leading up to her death, Tryna’s grandmother, a Catholic, expressed uncertainty about the afterlife and about whether her spirit would be “sent up or down.” Attempts to discourage these fears did not work, so Tryna asked that her grandmother visit her by “messing with pictures.” But her grandmother wasn’t convinced, not for three years. On the night of her grandmother’s death, the two made a pact. Tryna says, “I held her hand, I put my nose to her nose and I looked her right square in the eyes and I said, ‘Grandma, do not forget about the pictures.’ And she stared me in the eyes and she said, ‘Do you mean that?’ I said ‘Yes.’” That pact was the catalyst for spiritual change. Six months later, Tryna was suddenly overcome with sensations that she was freezing cold, and she began shaking. She was naturally a hot-bodied person, so this was very strange. When she felt her grandmother move into her body, she frantically called her father. He reminded her that she had invited her grandmother to contact her, so Tryna had no choice but to quietly accept it. True to their pact, her grandmother messed with Tryna’s framed pictures: they fell off walls, moved down halls, turned corners and even emailed themselves to Tryna. On the first anniversary of her grandmother’s death, a picture of Tryna and her daughter, which had been screwed to the wall, was found on the floor, undamaged. Other photos on the same wall remained in place. Unsure what was happening to her and what it all meant, Tryna kept the details quiet. The next catalyst for spiritual change occurred in 2013 when Ruby Tunke walked into Tryna’s office. After a brief conversation and through a series of events too uncanny to be described as coincidental, Tryna was guided to seek Ruby’s expertise. As Tryna describes, through spirit writing Ruby told her “all kinds of miraculous things which ended up coming true,” like that she would write a book. Although she originally laughed at the idea, Tryna is now the author of be.come: begin to be. After meeting Ruby, Tryna began meeting other beautiful high-quality healers, teachers and mentors from around the world. “So much information and so many teachings just fell into my lap,” she says, “and still continue to do so.”
Since then, Tryna’s work in spirit has progressed at top speed. Ever the entrepreneur, she founded the international be. real Conference and the be. real Centre in Dawson Creek, has been a guest on The Moore Show on YouTube and will appear in the upcoming documentary They Call Us Channelers. She speaks at public events and accepts mediumship clients for private sessions at her Dawson Creek office or via Skype or telephone. Tryna connects with the male energy of grandfathers and works very deeply with her grandmother all the time. She is developing new abilities in physical mediumship and in channelling in different languages. She also receives vivid premonitions in dreams—dreaming three to five times a night—that act as messages for her and clients. She receives guidance from Bear, her clan and totem animal, and lately from Eagle as well. “My Indigenous calling is really running rampant through my veins,” she says, smiling. The descendent of a Métis grandmother, a Cree grandmother and two white grandfathers, Tryna understands the role she was born to play. “I walk in two worlds,” she explains. “I walk in the white world, in the business world, and I walk in the Native world, the spiritual world. The role I’ve been assigned is to marry and merge the two cultures, to take the hand of both and walk in the middle to teach the other both sides, so both can feel safe and both can understand the other.” For Tryna, merging into this purpose feels natural. “I had to be willing to step into who that new version of me was,” she says, “and when I got there it was like I’d been this person for many lifetimes.” No longer a “halfassed Indian,” she says, “I am more Native now than I could have ever dreamt to be.” Through mediumship, Tryna teaches that it’s safe to rebirth and transform and that transforming can be effortless if we learn to surrender and follow our hearts. It is fear, in particular the fear of what others think about us, that prevents us from transforming and stepping into who we are, into our gifts and abilities. Tryna works with clients to address this fear: what it is, how it started, why it’s there, how it can be moved, how long it will take and what comes next. Sometimes we are not ready to change, and that’s okay, but when we are ready, life changes in a moment. That’s when “you find you for the first time in your life,” Tryna says, beaming. Tryna also teaches that transformation must not stop with us as individuals; it must extend into how we value each other. While she gives credit to her grandmother for “conducting the majority of this whole production,” the message, she insists, is not in the evidence that life Winter 2018 l GUIDED SYNERGY 15
exists after death. The message is that we must understand “the value of the Elders, Native and non-Native, who have had all the experiences and the teachings of any nation. It’s our responsibility to step up and go get the traditions of whatever our race, religion, language and culture are. We have to go get them now before they’re gone. And teach our children, teach them.” The spirits are working through Tryna to help us shift our lives and reconnect with the Earth, and people from all nations and backgrounds who are ready to walk on this path are invited. “It’s about universal connection and healing, one person at a time,” she explains. “I believe the Indigenous ways and the Indigenous people, Ancestors or alive, are going to be the ones that help rebirth the planet.” “Okosi Niwicewakan,” says Tryna (in Cree, “So there it is, my friend”), channelling a message from the Elders. Trees, also known as standing people, are where the gifts lie. The Grandfathers and Grandmothers want the readers to revisit and experience trees. Sitting with trees, touching trees, smelling trees, meditating with trees and feeling each tree’s personality, hearing each tree’s message. The people need to start with the trees. TREKKING IN NEPAL WITH KIDS AND GRANDMA Reaching the summit together
TRAVEL
I
sat on the cold stone stairs of the Poon Hill summit. My daughter sat in my lap, mostly to keep me warm. I clasped a metal mug of steaming masala tea, holding it close to my body. I was trying to extract every bit of warmth possible from that tiny cup. The pre-dawn cold was starkly different from the heat of the day I’d become accustomed to while trekking. Looking up, I saw the sky changing from the deep indigo of night to the warm sapphire light of day. As the sun climbed over the horizon, the snow-covered peaks in front of us began to sparkle. There were a few hundred people joining me for sunrise, but in that moment I felt like I was alone. The journey to this moment had not been easy. The day before, I’d slogged up approximately 5,600 stairs and gained 800 metres in altitude, all while encouraging my 5- and 7-year-old daughters and my 61-year-old mother to keep going. By the time we arrived in Ghandruk, I was hot, tired and hungry. Every muscle in my legs and back ached. I was so excited for sleep, but when I crawled into bed I felt like I was lying on a concrete slab. The room wasn’t heated, and although I snuggled under the large comforter, my face was cold all night. Sleep came in fitful spurts, and the night was far too short for it to be restful. The 4:15 a.m. alarm woke me too soon. Our goal was to leave by 4:30 for the 40-minute trek to the Poon Hill summit. This would get us there just as the sun was starting to rise.
Of course, with two kids and a grandma, we left 15 minutes late. I was determined to make up time. One of our assistants and my husband, Randy, carried the girls. Without the girls slowing us down, I took the lead and set a brisk pace. But we didn’t even make it out of the small town before my mom’s fatigue got the better of her. We stopped for her to catch her breath. She was exhausted from the strenuous day before, from not sleeping well and from waking up far too early. She’d given up and wanted to quit. With a few encouraging words and the decision to slow the pace, I convinced her to continue. I figured it was better to just reach the summit, regardless of the time. If we made it for sunrise, great! If not, that was okay. We were on the Poon Hill Trek. This was the climax, our ultimate destination. It was important that we made it—together. Fortunately, we did make it for sunrise. A steady stream of trekkers continued to arrive after us, so we were far from the last ones up. Watching the sun rise over an entire vista of Himalayan peaks was truly priceless. Overcoming the earlymorning struggle together made it that much better. Synergy Bookshelf LIFE AFTER DARK: 100 STORIES OF HOPE FROM SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE
SPONSORED EVENT
BY SUZANNE SAGMEISTER REVIEWED BY BELL W. POD
The weight of this book is not purely physical. The storytelling is outstanding, sharing such raw and tender accounts with a surefooted and steady softness. Whether suicide has closely touched you or not, the rich personability of the stories in Life After Dark will. I must tell you, this book found its way into my hands at a very sensitive time. Suicide had been weighing heavily on my mind for a long stretch— long enough that I had stopped taking it seriously.

If asked to pick a story that affected me the most, I could not point to one and say “that one,” because every story held its own value and focus. Each account spoke of a particular breed of suffering with reasoning and circumstance to match, and all the words and photographs came together with an indescribable, seamless beauty. Almost like a dream. Even so, at first I was hesitant to start reading. Would all these stories serve to turn me against myself even more? With a little careful reassurance, I began. Just a few paragraphs in, I felt the release of tension as I started to understand the depth of strength that sharing holds within matters of suicide. Life After Dark truly allowed me the space to collect my thoughts and feelings so that I could process them in a way that was safe and made sense to me. It was a way to connect with my relationship to suicide while maintaining a sense of openness. Not only are the stories recounted in a manageable environment, but the book also presents an unmatched opportunity for dialogue surrounding a subject deemed sensitive. From the moment I began reading Suzanne’s words of her experience, I felt a pull and reassurance toward this higher ground—an opening of sorts. Her story on its own was enough to shake the tears loose. The writing was so fluid, as if it were being recited to me personally. Simple and honest. Poetry. As I continued to read, each and every survivor became personified. These were not characters in a novel; they were living, breathing people. I could see the expressions on their faces, look them right in the eyes. The photographs added life to their words. They had been where I was. And a lot of them had made it out the other side to share their stories. This only served to strengthen my resolve. After all, in my hands, I held 100 friends and their families—at the very least, 100 reasons to tell someone what I was going through. From experience, I will say that this book possesses much greatness in its ability to enliven the true and compassionate warrior of life within. It could truly serve to save someone’s life.

A NEW YOU
A poem for the new year
T
he infinitival declension of self. The ever-present desire to be well. If only by means of wishes. Have you noticed that lingering voice? Can you hear its all-encompassing words that whisper which direction to go? Do you hear? Do you listen? Do you feel? That is your Spirit. She has a voice just like you. Feel that body ache? The sadness, anger or frustration? That might be her, spearing at you for attention. What is she saying? What does she want from you? Do you love and nurture the entity of her being? Or treat her like a martyr with no king to fetch the key? Abet, don’t you worry. She will keep talking. Just silence your mind and listen. What does she say? NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
Make self-care a priority
uilding a self-care practice is a great way to start the new year. Taking care of self allows you to be balanced and at your best and actually enjoy life all around you. Rather than feeling drained, worn out, tired and rushed, practice self-care every day and enjoy the life you are creating. Self-care is for all parts of you: mind, body and spirit. It’s not just going to the gym to get fit and lose a few pounds. It means taking care of the emotional, the mental and the physical parts that make you who you are. Here are some tips to help you develop a self-care practice: Find quiet time every day. Quiet time no longer means placing children in the corner as punishment. It’s a time to find calm and peace in your day. For you, it might mean starting a daily meditation practice, journalling about your day or simply finding time to sit in quiet and peace. If you’re not meditating, use this time to reflect on your day, finding gratitude and identifying moments of passion. Follow through. All too often, we have grand ideas of what we want to do, but we set ourselves up for failure. If you don’t follow through on your ideas, a year from now you’ll find yourself in the same place you are now. Make big plans and stick to them. Break your goals and desires down into manageable steps. Follow through by taking attainable steps towards what you truly desire. Reward yourself along the way. Ask yourself a daily question. Ask yourself this: What can I do today that my future self would be thankful for? It is important to live in the now, to appreciate what you have and are doing in this moment. It is equally important to plan a future that you will love and appreciate as well. This question helps me to stay present in this moment and listen to myself now, yet also build a future that I will enjoy, most often even more than I could have anticipated. It’s important to listen to self in developing your own self-care practice. We are all different and we all enjoy different activities. What do you need in this moment, emotionally, physically and mentally? Taking a drive or a walk, having a session, writing in a journal, taking a bath or shower, being creative, or dancing and singing at the top of your lungs—any of these can be part of your self-care practice. Sometimes it’s as simple as fully enjoying a meal or a coffee date with a friend. Listen to yourself and empower yourself to make the best choices for you. Everyone’s practice will look different. Follow what feels right for you. Most of all, do it! Love yourself enough to practice self-care. Invisible Diseases An art project on living life with invisible conditions by Hannah Lacrampe
HANNAH LACRAMPE Kidney Disease
Artist behind the Project A year ago, I started feeling pain on my right side. I began to feel tired all the time. Episodes of pain came in waves. The bad days became terrible weeks. I often had to cancel plans because of my pain. The worst part was that it started affecting my relationships because I couldn’t explain something that I didn’t understand myself. After almost a year of biopsies, colonoscopies, MRIs, CT scans, X-rays and appointments with half a dozen doctors, I was finally diagnosed with a kidney disease. My kidneys are currently functioning at 50 percent, and I take a medication to help slow the disease; right now I’m waiting on my results for multiple sclerosis tests.
For a while I didn’t tell many people, not even close friends, because I was scared that I would burden them with my problems—or worse, that they wouldn’t care. I thought talking about it would mean I wasn’t strong. But recently I realized that talking about my health problems shouldn’t be taboo. Lately, people I know have been going through stuff that they’ve been too scared or ashamed to talk about publicly, too. That’s what inspired me to create this art project, Invisible Diseases. I am photographing people’s health situations, physical and mental, to reveal the things that people, including myself, have been hiding about themselves. The more I’ve opened up about my health, the better and more supported I’ve felt. So that’s what this project is all about—empowerment. Turning something negative into something positive. I truly believe we are given what we can handle, and persevering through our weaknesses shows our strengths. Here, in their own words, six project participants share what it’s like to live with invisible conditions. Hannah Lacrampe has a bachelor of fine arts from the Alberta College of Arts and Design and is studying social work at Bow Valley College, with the goal of becoming an art therapist. Her experiences working with vulnerable groups of people have shaped her practice. Her art is focused on marginalized people and revealing what is beyond the labels given to individuals. For information on how you can participate in her Invisible Diseases project, contact her at lacrampeh@gmail.com.

JO RYAN Bullimia
“Nothing about me comes without a fight. It’s me versus me every day. The tough days are the days the better version of myself wins. I’ve split myself into two people; the girl with bulimia and the girl without. The girl with bulimia got left behind and now I’m getting to know the girl without.”
JEFFREY WOODALL Diabetes
“Most of my motivation comes from my memories of my time at the Stollery [Children’s Hospital]. Every time we visited the Stollery, one of the people we’d meet was the social worker. Now, to be clear, my family was and is supportive beyond measure. The problem is that the people at the Stollery see hundreds of new diabetics pass through with absolutely no support. They are bullied at school or at home for being different. Some teens skip insulin doses, literally giving up quality of life so that they can fit in at school. Young teenaged women are particularly afflicted by this behaviour. In a culture that runs on popularity, being different is often a social death sentence. The same is true of gaining weight, which is a side effect of insulin. So these women, with no other perceivable recourse, have been known to stop taking insulin to the extent that they are hospitalized in a coma or after fainting because their heart can no longer properly pump blood the consistency of maple syrup through their veins. This is why I volunteered for this project. I’ve been diabetic now for more than half my life. I’m no specimen of physical excellence, but I’m not the spectre of enormity that many people fear. This disease is nothing to be ashamed of, and it is important that I get that message to anyone and everyone who needs to hear it.”
CLAIRE ANNE Depression
“I try to make other people happy because I know what it’s like to be depressed. No one can choose what upsets them, but we can all choose how we react. I try not to let my depression run my life. I will always have it, I will always be easily upset, but I choose to smile and spread joy.” 24 www.guidedsynergy.ca
COURTNEY PENNER Cystinosis
“They can’t see that I’m hurting. They don’t notice I’m in pain. I shouldn’t have to prove how sick I am to the world. I don’t look sick, but turn my body inside out and it’d be another story. I’m just a storm with skin.”
KYRSTAL LEUNG Anxiety
“You think too much, you feel too much and unfortunately, because you’ve done those two things, you’ve now boxed yourself in. But you were just being you—your most natural self—and the price you pay is exhaustion. I am anxious every day. Few people in my life know this because for the most part it is manageable. No one can see my anxiety unless it’s one of the really bad days. When I’m having an anxiety attack, my thoughts and feelings consume me relentlessly. It overrides my senses, my rationale, and my extremities begin to suffer. I lose sensation in my hands, my feet and even my head. I shake uncontrollably, my breath is uneven and my name is not my own. My body revolts against my mind and it’s hard to not resent myself even after it’s over. In the aftermath, I sometimes imagine someone pointing a remote to my head, trying to rewind or fast forward, but it’s stuck. I’m stuck on pause, forced to confront my unruly thoughts until I find peace. The only reassuring thing about my chaos is that I do eventually find peace, even when it doesn’t seem at all possible. I am more in control than I give myself credit for, and it’s time I start believing it.”
NORA WYLIE PTSD
“I’m past the point of my soul crying and screaming. I’m
past the victim and survivor stages. I’ve wanted to die. I’ve controlled my existence to survive myself. I’ve lost my mind and also lived extremes. I’ve had fun for a lifetime. But I had to make a home in my inferno, pull weeds and plants seeds. Sit in the crime scene(s) and have many years pass. I still deal with triggers. My brain has changed. I erase and rewrite my mind, daily. I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Life excites me, if I may. I also found this found quote from Voltaire’s Candide: “I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life.” It’s a large part of the picture, and I don’t mind being honest about it.”

SPIRITUALITY
FREE SATSANG EVENING IN GRANDE PRAIRIE
Experience satsang with Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati
J
oin Atma Wholistic Practitioner for a free meditation program with Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati on Thursday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre. The session will include chanting and discourse followed by meditation. Satsang is a Sanskrit word meaning “in the company of truth.” These gatherings reverberate with the truth that we are more than just conscious beings. We are Beingness itself. We are Consciousness itself. Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati, or Swamiji as she is called by her followers, is the spiritual head of Svaroopa Vidya Ashram in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. As a teaching monk, she has dedicated her life to helping others explore their own divine essence. “Swamis,” she explained in a 2012 interview with Yoga International, “are the ones who say, ‘I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I’ve tried those things that everyone is so frenetically trying.’ And you know what? It doesn’t make you happy. Swamis are those who renounce the world and dedicate their life and their energies to the inward exploration of their own divinity.” In “Yoga, Sweat and Mysticism,” for Yoga Alliance, Swami said, “Yoga calls itself a science. methodologies to get predictable the battery in your car. On the methodologies provide reliable to medical therapies, targeted a deeper
an article written Nirmalananda It uses proven results, just like physical level, the results, often likened yet the sages always goal.”
She explained further: “You attain the goal when you become one with consciousness: … to know your own Divine Self (svaroopa), inherent within you. The results are reliable. If you do what the sages teach, you will experience what they promise. This is yoga—pure mysticism, meaning it is about the mystery of life, the mystery that is hidden inside every human heart and being.” Swami Nirmalananda brings this perspective to all her teachings. She uses a lighthearted, warm and down-to-earth approach, drawing examples from everyday life to help make the mystical teachings accessible to her students. As her bio on the ashram’s website says, “Her students cherish their
relationship with her, as it carries them forward into yoga’s ancient promise.” This is the type of experience she had with her own teacher and guru, Swami Muktananda of Ganeshpuri, India, the founder of Siddha yoga. She studied with Swami Muktananda from the mid-1970s until his death in 1982. She credits him with everything. Six weeks before his death, he sent her back to the United States to raise her children and to teach others. In 1992, she established the Master Yoga Foundation, a nonprofit teacher-training program that helped Svaroopa yoga spread around the world. She also worked with Deepak Chopra to establish his first yoga program. During her tenure as president of Yoga Alliance, an American nonprofit organization representing yoga teachers and schools, she helped create the country’s first set of national standards for yoga teachers. During this time, she also worked towards what she knew to be her ultimate purpose: to become a yogic monk and help others. “I was in active and conscious preparation to take initiation as a swami,” she told Yoga International in 2012. Since her initiation in 2009, she has founded the ashram, consolidated Master Yoga’s yoga and meditation teacher-training program into it and opened a training and retreat centre in Pennsylvania. Swami Nirmalananda travels throughout the United States, Canada and Australia, offering free satsang programs as well as weekend retreats. She leads pilgrimages to Ganeshpuri, India, regularly. She also teaches through the ashram website (www.svaroopa.org). There, students can access free resources such as
articles, daily quotes and recordings. For a fee, there is also a year-long distance learning program beginning each spring. Atma Wholistic Practitioner is thrilled to bring Swami Nirmalananda to Grande Prairie to share her teachings with our community. Tammy Wieliczko began her yoga teaching career in 1998 and teaches weekly classes at her private studio, Atma Wholistic Practitioner, in Grande Prairie. She explores and implements many realms of healing into her classes and massage therapy treatment sessions. She attended her first Svaroopa yoga teacher training in 2015 and continues to further her training in Svaroopa yoga and meditation. Winter 2018 l GUIDED SYNERGY 27

Whether you want to achieve weight loss, land your dream job, find your soul mate, or get out of debt, it all comes back to self-love and accepting yourself first. Shannon Kaiser learned the secrets to loving herself, finding purpose, and living a passion-filled life after recovering from eating disorders, drug addictions, corporate burnout, and depression.
