pring is here, my friends. I hear the birds chirping in the morning, and my tulips are blooming. This issue, a combined Spring/ Summer issue, is the first of 2019; we are going back to our roots and publishing three issues a year. Our themes for this year’s issues are body, mind, and soul, and if you have been following the magazine for years, you might recognize this as our tagline from years ago. Our tagline has shifted to “Holistic Lifestyle Magazine,” encompassing those three elements and more. As we move through spring and start planning summer fun, take a look at our festival guide on page 22. We have highlighted most of the major festivals and events in the Peace Country. Here at Guided Synergy, we are looking forward to sponsoring two festivals, both advertised in this issue. The North Country Fair, seen on the back page, is a magical little festival in the valley of Driftpile, Alberta. This year’s dates are June 21 to 23. This is an all-ages festival that everyone should experience at least once. Stay tuned to our Facebook page, as we are giving away a two-pack of tickets to the North Country Fair this year.
For this issue, focusing on the body, our cover feature, Janet Key, fits right in, with her background as a yoga teacher and her experience using yoga to facilitate greater self-exploration. Today Janet is a financial advisor with a passion for helping women gain financial independence. As she tells us, “Financial security is also about empowerment and planning.” Read her full story on pages 14 to 16. I was fortunate to spend 10 days on the island of Kauai in Hawaii in April, and I finally understand all the buzz about “the Garden Isle.” My visit left me with a sense of renewal, and while I was there, I had an intuitive flash that we need to plan a retreat there with Awaken Your Glow Events. SOME BODY TO LOVE Look inside for love
G
uided Synergy’s themes of body, mind, and soul resonate with me and so many readers. Recently, I sat with the topic of body as the Jefferson Airplane song “Somebody to Love” repeated in my head. The lyrics had been rolling around my mind for days and days, telling me we all need somebody to love and creating frustrations within me. So I altered the lyrics. It’s not somebody we need to love, it’s some body. For generations, we have looked outside ourselves for love. We have looked for love in a partner, in validation, in codependency, and in so many other places. But over the last decade, body love and body image are being discussed more often. Mostly women, and some men, are addressing this need to work on inner love before searching for outer love. Let’s back up to how somebody came to be before we look at some body. Most of us have grown up watching role models search for outside love. Family, friends, coworkers, and other supportive people have helped us to develop our need for outer love; we internalize the message that we need to have somebody to love. These patterns get passed on from generation to generation until we all believe that we want and must have somebody else in our lives to love. Some of us create healthy relationships, but others develop an unhealthy need for others to love us, with the hopes that we, in turn, will learn to love ourselves. Add to this the endless messages we get from romantic movies, self-help books, magazines, and even lyrics of songs. No wonder so many people have unhealthy ideas about love.

At the same time, many of us struggle with the concept of self-love. Some of us can’t even fathom the notion of loving our own body, mind, or soul. Addictions (of all types), suicide, anxiety, depression, and self-harm are major problems for people of all ages in our society. The world can be scary if we rely solely on somebody loving us.
GET CONTROL OF YOUR CORTISOL
Now, what happens if we reframe the somebody in the song to some body? “Some body to love” can be turned inwards and we can explore loving our scars, stretch marks, rolls, and the other perfectly imperfect parts of our body. I doubt any of us can say with one hundred percent conviction that we love every part of our body. We must let go of the illusion that loving ourselves is all or nothing. Needing some body to love means that your body needs you to ingest healthy foods, get active, drink water, and explore life outside electronics. Yes, we have all heard this many times before, yet one day it starts to click. You might start small, with a glass of water and 5 to 15 minutes of time outside daily. Then you might find a fitness class that excites you and begin to eat out less as you discover your passion for cooking. To love having some body to love is the ultimate goal—finding the strength to say to someone else, “I love myself and who I have become today” and feeling it deep in your body, mind, and soul. It’s essential to truly believe what you say to others in order to believe your self-talk. Talk the talk on the outside, and walk the walk on the inside. You’d better find some body to love, as not loving your body can be a life-or-death situation. Your body is a temple. You are worth more than holding on to negative self-talk that manifests as physical and mental illness. You are worth more than eating disorders, suicide, or life-threatening disease. You are worth the time it takes to connect with your body, mind, and soul. You are truly a gift to this world and you are worth self-love.

THE LOWDOWN ON MODERN MINDFULNESS Develop an authentic practice
M
indfulness is a hot topic right now. Not only is it a trendy hashtag on social media, it’s also a popular word for mass marketers and sales reps. While I’m all for bringing awareness to our mental state and positive well-being, I am not so supportive when powerful healing modalities get abused for the sake of following what’s trending on Twitter.
Sure, back in the day people didn’t live the lives we live today, which could be a reason to argue that these new tools are necessary, or at least useful. We experience stressors and pressures specific to our generation. I get it. However, having more stress and pressure isn’t our golden ticket to become lazy with our experiences in this lifetime.
In today’s world, we are flooded with outside influence in all areas of our lives. We are guided, from an early age, on how to dress, what foods to like, and the type of careers we should aspire to. Now, with the rise of the mindfulness trend, we are also bombarded with messages about all the ways we should be present in our lives. Heaven forbid we dare cut out the middleman and actually work on relearning to listen to our own intuition.
Everything that this life has to offer is our responsibility to claim. Your body, including your innate intuition, is the best resource in guiding you to enjoy the experience of life. Our bodies communicate with us in many different ways. Being mindful allows us to really sit and digest the clues our bodies are giving us.
That’s right—your body actually gives you all the information you need in order to live your best life. The problem is that we have been taught to not listen to our bodies. Mindfulness means being consciously aware. How consciously aware can you be when someone outside of yourself is having to teach you how to be aware? Also, there is no single measure of what awareness looks like. This means that you and I might perceive awareness as two totally different things, which throws a wrench in the idea that we can all experience being mindful in the same way, that there is some sort of universal mindfulness. If we believe someone needs to tell us how to think or feel while we are practicing being mindful, are we actually being mindful at all? What would happen if your mindfulness coach or the app you use no longer existed? The practice of mindfulness has been around for much longer than your coach or the app, which proves that these current trends aren’t necessary.
There are many ways to experience mindfulness while keeping your practice authentic to you. A great way to start is to make an effort to be present during your day. It’s interesting to note that because mindfulness is such a fad, it prevents many of us from being truly being present. Instead of living in and enjoying the moment, we are focusing on how to create the next best moments to cherish. The only moment you need to cherish is the one you are currently in, as no other moments are guaranteed to you. This is mindfulness in its purest form. If you’ve already mastered the art of being present during specific moments, you can take this further by spending some time getting to know your body’s cues on a deeply intimate level. Once again, this doesn’t have to be as complicated as we have been led to believe. When was the last time you quietly sat, closed your eyes, and paid attention to your breath? No one telling you what to think, no app giving you sounds to focus on, just you and your breath. This is about relearning to tune into your self-awareness. We forget that we are all going to experience sensations differently. This type of mindfulness meditation is about giving you a chance to dial in and pay attention to your sensations. When we allow outside noise to dictate to us what mindfulness should look and feel like, we are stepping away from the purpose. The purpose of mindfulness is for you to learn to tune in and be present. It’s about learning to be aware of your experiences in this world while understanding that you have more control than you think. While the fad of mindfulness takes away from the traditional practice, I am thankful that it is making us aware of the importance of the concept. I challenge you to be more present in your mindfulness practice by decluttering it slightly and remembering that complicated does not always equal effective. You don’t need a fancy mediation cushion and a binaural beats playlist. Sit down, close your eyes, and breathe. In the summertime, I love to eat fresh cherries, which are so abundant this time of year. Here are three breakfast recipes that are quick, simple, and delicious. I hope you enjoy them!
Cherry and Strawberry Breakfast Bars
Dairy free; can be vegetarian by using vegetable-based or no protein powder
Makes 8 bars 2 cups oats 1 cup cooked quinoa* 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/3 cup coconut sugar ¼ cup hemp hearts ½ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon sea salt 1 scoop protein powder (optional) 2 mashed bananas 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons almond butter ½ cup chopped cherries ½ cup chopped strawberries Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8×8-inch pan with nonstick coating. In a large bowl, place oats, cooked quinoa, baking powder, coconut sugar, hemp hearts, cinnamon, sea salt, and protein powder; mix well.
In a small bowl, place mashed bananas, eggs, vanilla, and almond butter; mix well. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Stir in the cherries and strawberries and mix until combined. Place mixture in pan and press down until mixture is level. Bake for 25 minutes. Let cool and then cut into 8 pieces. *¼ cup quinoa + ½ cup water = 1 cup cooked quinoa Shannon Boyne is a holistic nutrition consultant and a yoga and meditation teacher. Cherry and Lemon Muffins Gluten free, vegetarian Makes 12 muffins 2 cups gluten-free flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ¾ cup coconut sugar ½ teaspoon sea salt 2 eggs ½ cup butter, softened ½ cup almond milk 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 cup diced cherries ¼ cup coconut sugar for topping (optional) Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray muffin pans with nonstick coating. In a large bowl, place flour, baking powder, coconut sugar, and sea salt; mix well. In a small bowl, place eggs, butter, almond milk, lemon juice, and lemon zest; mix well. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Do not overmix. Stir in the cherries and mix until combined. anet Key believes that “we come here to live our truths and learn our lessons through the challenges and experiences that life brings us.” Through abandonment and insecurity, Janet has cultivated astonishing resiliency and self-knowing in stepping into her personal authenticity. A self-taught and lifelong learner, she is driven and passionate about empowering women to lead financially independent and prosperous lives. For Janet, life was immediately challenging. She was born to teenage parents in the small town of Channel-Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador. She was placed for adoption at birth and then removed from adoption by her parents, only to be placed and removed again by them before she was three months old.
“because without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today.” Although she experienced hard life lessons as a child, Janet believes she would not have developed such perseverance and resiliency if she had not journeyed through this dark space to begin with. Janet also practiced yoga to facilitate deeper selfexploration. Yoga helped her consciously heal the darkness within her and allowed her to step further into the light within her body. In a short time, Janet became certified as a yoga instructor and began teaching yoga in Port aux Basques.
Janet’s early years were not easy. She lived in a physically abusive home with a father who experienced severe mental illness. Her family also lived on welfare for several years. “My father didn’t provide for us, so my mother had to do the best she could financially,” she says. Although her parents divorced when she was five years old, her traumatic upbringing strongly affected every area of her life.
At 29, Janet and her family moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta, and by age 37, she was divorced with three children. No longer able to stay at home, Janet worked her way up in administrative positions, always knowing she wanted to create more financially. In pursuing those dreams, Janet began working at RBC bank, where she learned about finances and wealth management. She also sought out a financial advisor to ask what she needed to do to have peace of mind as she moved forward. Looking back, Janet realizes she was being shaped to become an advisor herself.
Her teenage years were just as tough. Unhappy, shy, and insecure, Janet felt lost. She received comfort from counsellors and two particularly caring teachers. She also received comfort from an internal knowing that began from a young age: “I didn’t grow up with any religious background,” she says, “but I prayed to a higher power and I knew someday I would find happiness.”
Today, Janet is self-employed as an independent advisor with Plan-it Financial Corporation, is married to “the best husband in the world, the biggest cheerleader in my corner,” and is the proud mom of three financially literate daughters. “I had to come to a place where I believed I was secure in my life. I’m happy, I’m very blessed, and I’m very grateful,” she says, smiling.
Janet was 19 years old when she met and married her first husband. They had three children together. She worked proudly for many years as a stay-at-home mother. In terms of a career, Janet did not know what she wanted to do or who she wanted to be, so she dedicated herself to personal development. “I read all the time, especially books on wealth, to learn who I was,” she says.
Based on her evolving journey of self-discovery, Janet believes there are six pillars in life: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, relationship, and financial. Our goal is to create harmony within each pillar and to regain a sense of balance from disharmony.
Throughout her twenties, Janet looked for answers to get herself on a path to a happier life. She didn’t understand energy work or alternative healing modalities then, but she believed in signs, and if an opportunity came to her, she went for it. “Having the childhood that I did created a lot of wounds that needed to be healed,” she recalls.
When we lack a sense of security in any pillar, energy in the form of stress gets held within our bodies. This is especially true of financial security. Money, wealth, and debt can be sensitive topics to discuss. The beliefs and emotions we hold in our bodies about money affect our overall mental health, and in turn, our relationship towards money. “If you are creating debt and living in debt, your body is in disharmony,” Janet says.
Janet learned about her parents’ stories; she discovered who they are and where they came from. When she chose to see them and accept them for who they are, she found a place of forgiveness and love within herself. “I feel grateful,” she says,
Janet has been working through her beliefs around security, finances, and the body. “I had lots of wounds in my life,” she says, “but I had financial wounds too, because I lacked a sense of security, not just mentally, but physically.” Spring/Summer 2019 l GUIDED SYNERGY 15
Financial security also involves empowerment and planning. As a stay-at-home mom, Janet didn’t take control of her financial goals, but instead allowed others to make decisions for her. After her divorce, it was important for her to have financial independence. “I didn’t want a man to be my plan,” she says. Although she didn’t know how to reach her goals, she did have the ability to take action. “True empowerment is being in control of your life,” Janet shares, “by having a financial plan and taking action towards what is important for you.” In having a plan, we become more money conscious. Spending and saving money are neither good nor bad, but bringing awareness to how we manage our money is essential. Are we in control of our money or does it control us? Janet’s primary goal as an advisor is to facilitate mindfulness so women can feel empowered. Janet also points out that with female entrepreneurship on the rise, women create, control, and influence vast amounts of wealth. As reported by Advisor’s Edge in March 2018, it’s estimated that women will control almost half of all accumulated financial wealth in Canada by 2026. If women truly want wealth and abundance, they must bring awareness to financial insecurities, heal them, and take action through planning. “Knowing where you’re at is important, knowing where you want to go is important,” Janet recommends, “and having a plan to get there is important.” She encourages women to know their truth when having conversations about money. It’s typical for conversations to be one-sided: You may agree with what someone else wants, even though it’s not right for you. Likewise, when someone disagrees with you, it’s still important to do what’s right for yourself. “If you’re going to live your truth, you need to consider that your truth is independent of your partner’s truth,” she says. When it comes to a plan, Janet recommends having one that’s right for you and for your partnership. As an advisor, Janet meets with potential clients to determine if creating a financial relationship is a good fit for both parties. A good fit is one where there is complete honesty and transparency, and where the client is emotionally prepared to acknowledge their current financial reality. Developing a relationship with an advisor is an important step in taking control of your finances. F
ollowing your heart is not a path that everyone takes. Trusting that the universe is going to take care of you can be risky at best. Our family—Patty, me, and our children, Reid and Lela—has known this to be true on occasion. The combination of making educated choices, allowing things to happen as they may, and confronting our fears has led us on a journey that has changed our perspective of the world. This is our story.

When you’re considering a life-altering decision such as travelling around the world as a family of four, obstacles are likely to pop up that may keep you from going through with your plan. These could include your home, your job, your children and their lives at school and in sports, your parents, your friends—or maybe just the fear of the entire change itself. You must carefully consider how the future consequences of your choice will affect the life you are leading right now. Before we made our final decision, many questions ran through our heads. The pros and the cons. The opinions of our family members and friends. And, of course, our own feelings.
As we awoke on the morning of November 2, 2018, reality set in. All the days of preparation—our home sale, renovations, dinners with friends, immunizations, packing, and setting out a budget for a nine-month trip around the world—had led to this day. All of the news interviews, radio spots, and magazine articles we’d done set us on a can’t-lookback kind of trail.
We knew we wanted to travel around the globe, but we couldn’t figure out an easy way to do that and still manage our home, keep Patty’s full-time position with ATB Financial, and have the kids attend school and sports. So we just got rid of the them! No, not the kids. The obstacles. We chose to sell our home and all of our possessions, ATB gave Patty a leave of absence, we pulled the kids out of school and sports, and we confronted change head-on! Reid and Lela were both excited yet apprehensive about what we were doing. They had been included in our decision making from day one. Without the consent and approval of both the kids, our trip may not have started. Family participation in all aspects of our daily lives is important to us. From the meals we eat to the shows we watch, Patty and I have chosen to discuss these choices with our children. Most of the time our minds are already made up, but the feeling of inclusion, we believe, is as important as showing them unconditional love. Our departure date was not supposed to be this soon. We had planned to spend a few months picking away at renovations and slowly selling off our belongings while the children finished the school year in their respective classrooms. But sometimes life throws you a curveball, and you have to choose whether to swing at it or wait for the next pitch. We received an offer to purchase our home, with the conditions that the renovations be finished, the bigger furniture be included, and a few chosen paint colours be applied. It didn’t take us long to decide whether or not to swing. We had no clue if this would be a base hit or a homerun or if we would strike out, but we swung for the fences! I hadn’t planned on finishing the renovations for five months, and with this new schedule everything literally came down to the last day. But we completed the renos, sold our home, and cut down our belongings to a 7-foot-by-14-foot
Our friends and family obviously knew what was going on and that the countdown had started. Some were more pleased than others. Most were excited, and all shared their farewells. It’s not forever; it’s more of a see you soon, although when we do move back to Alberta, we will no longer live in the north.
First we were heading south to Wetaskiwin, my hometown and the current home of my mother, Mary-Lou, where we would park the trailer and truck, say our goodbyes to folks in that area, and head out on the adventure of a lifetime. Mother Nature met us that morning with a snowstorm. It seemed fitting. We would be leaving Canada in four days. “Remember what you’re leaving,” she seemed to say. The roads ended up being fine. We tied up all our loose ends in those few days. Last-minute purchases, more dinners, including an absolutely incredible send-off by our centralAlberta friends, more interviews with Citytv and CTV, and our last nights with my mother all went exactly as they should. We had taken our deep breaths—many times over the previous couple of months. Patty had been researching the correct path and calculating our budget nonstop. I had continued to build my business in preparation for the handsoff way of operation it would require. And the kids, well, the kids were just being the kids. Excited to get started, yet sad to leave. The passing of Patty’s mother, Marie Jeanne, in February 2018 had solidified our decision to travel. My career allowed for it. Patty’s job gave her a leave of absence. We are all healthy and our children still think we are cool and want to spend time with us. These are but a few of the reasons why we chose to uproot our family and explore what we have only seen on TV. It’s everything we thought it would be, just five months early. Travel pulls you in a way that nothing else does. It takes a special person to take a leap like this. We are fortunate that four of us have been brought together in this life, and we will take on the world, head-on! First stop: Beijing, China. FOCUS ON YOUR WHOLE SELF Give up the idea of perfection

A
s I sit here on the beach in El Salvador, I watch people take photos of each other. Gone are the days of natural photos. Pose after pose, getting just the right angle, checking the photo to make sure it’s good enough, deciding it’s not and taking another. I’m guilty, too, trading an in-the-moment experience for the perfect photo that I can share with the world so I can be validated and praised on how good I look. After all, isn’t that what we all want? We desire to be liked, envied, complimented, and told we are good enough. At the core of it, we don’t fully accept ourselves. Yikes! That’s a hard truth to swallow. What if we decided to truly accept ourselves where we are in this very moment? To believe that we are enough. What would that look like? That sounds like freedom to me. It sounds good, but it’s not as easy as flipping a switch. As we roll into spring and summer, we start to see the ads: “Get that summer body.” “Bikini ready in no time.” But I can tell you one thing that won’t work—going on another diet. I spent years doing just that. I grew up as the “big girl” in the family. I love food, but my sister got all our mother’s skinny genes and I was left with the weight-struggle gene. I quit swimming and decided not to lifeguard, even though I loved the water, because I hated wearing a bathing suit. I wore baggy T-shirts when my family went on vacation to the beach. I quit volleyball and basketball in high school because I felt uncomfortable in shorts. I tried throwing up after meals because I wanted to be skinny but didn’t want to actually stop eating. I went on diets, did tons of cardio—anything that promised to make me look like the girls on the magazine covers. The extra weight didn’t serve me, it’s true. At five-foot-three and 200 pounds, I wasn’t feeling good. The problem was my approach: trying to fix the outside before working on the inside or, at times, focusing only on the inside without any regard for the outside. The reality is we are each a single whole—mind, body, and soul. In the long term, it doesn’t work to focus on only one aspect. But we can decide what to focus on. We can ask for help from people who have overcome similar issues. We can notice and walk through the struggle instead of around it. These things take time. We can choose something different. Instead of falling for those ads, try saying this: “This time I’m choosing to enjoy life now, before I have the body I think I should have. No more putting off the things I enjoy or want to accomplish because I don’t think I look the part.” At 20 I married my high school love, and a few months later I was pregnant. That was not the plan I had for my life. I needed to get skinny first, dammit. Now I’m going to be extra fat, I thought. That nine months was a struggle, but a baby is a good distraction from your problems. Nine months after our baby was born, my husband died in a drunk-driving accident. So there I was, alone with a baby, depressed, larger than ever, and feeling like life was ending when it should have been starting. My daughter and I moved to Vancouver to live with my sister. This was my opportunity to get my life figured out. I hired a trainer, followed a meal plan, and lost over 60 pounds. I decided to compete in bodybuilding. I was on a roll. I was skinny, everyone complimented me, and there is no better distraction from pain
and sadness than totally immersing yourself in a sport that is all-consuming, self-absorbed, and obsessive. I measured and weighed everything. I worked out seven days a week, weight and cardio sessions totalling three hours a day. I was down 90 pounds. I placed first in my very first competition and then won the overall championship. I was on such a high. But then I put on 10 pounds. Then another 10 and another. Four months later, I was up 45 pounds. To go from my “perfect” body to this carried so much shame. I hid in my house. I hated seeing people because I thought they would judge me like I was judging myself. Now, you can see the problem: I had been focusing only on the outside. It was a distraction from all the pain I was feeling. When it was all over, the only thing I was left with was my mind and my normal, everyday life. I didn’t know what to do. The years that followed were a journey of learning, messing up, counselling, antidepressants, learning, messing up, and more learning. We never reach the elusive perfect body or life, but we can grow, learn, notice, and grow some more. We can become more content and joyful in what is and live more for the present moment with a peaceful heart, body, and mind. As far as weight loss goes, ask yourself these questions: Do I actually need to lose weight? Is this something I think I should do because I’ve been conditioned since birth that looking a certain way is desirable? Is my weight affecting my daily life? Am I struggling to move? Do my joints hurt? Do I have high blood pressure or diabetes? If yes, you need to focus on your diet and exercise. But don’t forget, this is connected to your beautiful mind. Besides fitting into a smaller pair of jeans, what will you get out of losing weight? More fun activities with your kids? More intimacy with your partner? Increased confidence to do things you’ve been putting off? Less judgement towards others who already have what you perceive to be perfect? This body of ours is a journey. It’s also a gift. We are made uniquely individual. We each have different things to offer the world and the people in our lives. If we use most of our energy thinking about what we don’t have and what could be better, we rob everyone we love and ourselves of so much. And if we want lasting freedom, we need to accept what is, while nurturing our bodies into a place of better health. We need to focus on the whole: the physical, mental, and spiritual parts. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that we will die one day, and we don’t know when or how. At your funeral, no one is going to talk about how amazing your abs were. They will talk about who you were as a person and how you touched their lives. Don’t let your legacy be one of lack. Instead, choose joy and abundance. You truly are more than your weight. MATTA FEST Come in unity
W
hat is community? There are many ways to answer that question. But one way to define it is simply as common unity. No matter what our spirituality or outlook on life, it is important we remember that we all have a deep common unity, as we breathe the same air, walk on the same earth, are warmed by the same sun, and are touched by the same rain. For twenty years I have seen this attitude of common unity at Matta Fest, where a conservative man in a cowboy hat feels free to laugh with a guy in dreadlocks. I have smiled seeing Christians dancing with Hindus, and Jewish maidens hooping with pagan lassies. This is the essence of Matta Fest. This is the essence of core health, feeling connected instead of separated. A separated, untouched baby fails to thrive. Our inner child needs connection to thrive. This loving energy, Matta energy, was expressed this year by the generous donation of sacred space by Burnt Offerings and by kindred souls who donated fabric and created and gathered 400 ribbons for 20 maypoles. It was expressed by the people who helped to fundraise to cover expenses. It was expressed by the entertainers who gave their talents to entertain and wow us as we welcomed spring and Mama Nature in her new cloak of green. This loving energy was especially appreciated this year, after we were told we would not be guaranteed use of Dunvegan Park for Matta Fest because it was off season. We were also told that even if permission came through, we would be required to pay the park personnel overtime to attend and supervise us. We would no longer have access to power, water, or toileting facilities. Ironically, the person who denied us full access to the park acted as a catalyst in our growth. For this we give thanks. When he said that Matta Fest had outgrown the Dunvegan location, I was reminded of nature’s cycle of growth, with young pups outgrowing their den and moving on to explore the world, becoming stronger because of it. I realized we were no longer young pups. This was something to celebrate. As he spoke, I was given a vision. Colour exploded from a river in swirls and circles, spiraling outwards in different directions to begin swirling over and over again. Later, I realized I was seeing the ribbons of maypoles. This spring, at Burnt River, my colourful vision started to become a physical reality when 20 maypoles were initiated with dance for the 20 years of Matta Fest. Next year, in 2020, the number 20 duplicates itself. Ten of the initiated poles will be danced in 10 different community gatherings at the beginning of May. Metaphorically, Matta will be having babies to help spread her essence. Each offspring festival will choose its own name as a new branch of the Matta family tree. For instance, Fairview’s spring festival at Cummings Lake will be called Pachamama Day. Ten more of the 20 initiated poles have been homed with individuals and families who will continue to hold sacred space at Dunvegan every first Sunday of May. The caretakers will gather with others for a merry May Day picnic to weave their poles with other Matta kin, welcoming spring as in days of yore. Please join us. As far as I know, no one needs a permit to picnic. As Monty Python would say, “Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more.” The roots of Matta go deep into the valley of Dunvegan. We share communal history and herstory that cannot be taken away from us. We share with all our relations who came before us, those who held sacred space at this ancient traditional gathering ground. We may feel anger, we may feel sorrow, as we say goodbye to what was, but nothing is ever destroyed, only transformed. The essence of Matta will live on, no matter what name we use, when we come in unity to celebrate spring. DANCE MEDICINE Discover your inner dancer
T
he first time I danced with my Core Connexion community in Calgary, it was like stepping into a completely alternate reality. Over 40 bodies from all walks of life thrashed around in a unique ensemble of authenticity and vulnerability. Core Connexion Transformational Arts was my gateway into dancing as a practice. Coming from a small hamlet in northern Alberta, I had never dreamed that people would gather regularly just to move according to how they were feeling. Over time, I began to overcome the awkwardness of moving in the way I really wanted to and the vulnerability of being seen. Very few things make me feel alive and present the way dance does, and finding this practice was like coming home to my body in the simplest way. This is when I began a true relationship with myself and I really learned to listen. I began to see who I was and what was important to me. This type of dance gave me an opportunity to celebrate myself, my stories, and my life. I started to explore the concept of connection more deeply through contact dancing and through experiencing where I fit within the group of dancers who were present with me. My sense of belonging grew, as did my ability to experience my emotions and bodily sensations. I was learning what it meant to be grounded, centred, and present. I slowed down and took the time to hear what my body was trying to tell me. From there, I started to study other forms of dance, all of which brought me more gifts and opportunities to grow, learn, and connect. Ecstatic dance introduced me to different states of mind, obtained through combining different movements and breath. This noticeably changed the way I thought about life, and I began to learn how to let go.
develop a regular practice. I simply followed what brought me the most joy and freedom. I always feel good dancing, so I chose to do this often. I had no idea that I could explore this simple activity in so much depth and with so many rewards. It has become an important means for release and communion and has allowed me to learn to appreciate my body for its uniqueness, capability, and true beauty. It has led me on a path of self-love, fuelled by curiosity. The acceptance I have found in others who also feel the call to dance has brought me a deep sense of community and belonging. Dance will always be my favorite practice. So I invite you to consider dance from a deeper perspective. Look for classes or social events in your area, or even just slow down and pay more attention to your body when you’ve got the radio on in the kitchen. Notice the easy smile movement brings to your face and how much you may be missing in the busyness of the world. Belly dance brought me the opportunity to deepen my connection to my body. I began to learn how I did want to move. I gained grace, coordination, strength, stability, and beauty as I started adapting to a new structure in my movements. Through this practice I was able to create real space through lengthening stretches and understanding my core and posture in a different way. I learned how to hold my body so that I could stand tall yet still have a lot of freedom in my hips and arms. With belly dance, I also began to experience dance as an art form and to break the stigma associated with a media-projected body image. Flow dancing brought a completely different dimension to my movements as I learned to move various props around my body. By adding feedback from manipulating an object, I extended my body awareness beyond myself. Learning to move in ways I had never imagined possible has truly challenged me and surprised me. Adding fire to both props and belly dance has added layers of wonder and adventure to my practice. When I started dancing, I didn’t set out to heal myself or
