ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

come to your wedding! This important step needs to be tackled early on in the planning process so you can start looking at which types of venues are most suitable for your guests. Once this is sorted, you can begin the search for the venue of your dreams, and even think about who you’re going to choose to be involved in the ceremony itself.

C

ongratulations! You’ve said ‘yes’, and started on the exciting path towards married life together. However, wedding planning (and the pressure to start quickly) can easily get overwhelming, so we’ve created a handy list to help get you started…

Get your Ring Sized and Insured First things first - if you haven’t already, make sure your engagement ring fits you perfectly, and is insured. If this means having it resized, then do this ASAP, as a ring that’s too big may slip off your finger and be lost. 12

You should also make sure you add your engagement ring to your home content insurance, or look into specific jewellery insurance to make sure that you’re covered in case anything ever happened to your beautiful new ring.

Chat About Your Priorities Before you can start to make wedding decisions, you need to make sure you and your new fiance are both on the same page. Do you want a short or a long engagement? A wedding in the UK or abroad? A large gathering or an intimate celebration? www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

We’d l o v e to help y o u th r ou gh y weddin our g plan ning jo f ro m s u r n ey t a r t to finish, not do s o w hy w nl o a d yo u r online F R EE weddin g plan today? ner Sig n u g ui d e s p at f o r b ri d es.co.u k/ planne r!

Something casual or all-out elegance? Make a list of the things that are most important to you when it comes to planning, and refer back to these if you ever feel overwhelmed.

Set Your Budget Your wedding budget is one of the most important things to get sorted early, and it’s vital that you talk figures. For some people, a ‘budget’ wedding may cost £1,000, and for others it may cost £10,000, so make sure you’re on the same wavelength. Once you know your magic number, discuss how you’re going to pay. Are you going to save up before the big day, ask for help from family, or look into a personal loan? Be sure you have a plan before paying for anything.

Get Inspired Now comes the fun part! Once you’ve decided roughly what kind of wedding you’re thinking of, and how much you want to spend, you can start getting inspired. Start a Pinterest board (if you haven’t already!), look up real weddings for real-life inspiration, and follow all your favourite wedding websites on social media. (Psst - we’re @guidesforbrides!) GfB The Wedding Directory 2019

Get Key Suppliers Sorted First When it comes to actually starting to book your suppliers, then the most important one to sort first is, of course, your wedding venue. Once you have this booked and the date is set, then you’ll find the rest of the process simpler. Next on the list should be your photographer, as they often get booked up far in advance and can only do a limited number of weddings, and your catering if it’s not being provided by your venue. You should also book anything you have your heart absolutely set on - if you’re desperate to get a certain type of band, or book a specific makeup artist, then do it sooner rather than later. Once these important suppliers are booked, you can have fun choosing the rest! 13

ull of bright colours and smiling faces, Emma and Nikul’s beautiful wedding at The Matara Centre was seriously inspiring. Inspired by nature and beautiful sari fabrics, the pair tied the knot surrounded by friends, family, and some truly stunning venue decor! After meeting on a snowy night in an Oxford nightclub, the pair were together for five years before becoming engaged. They then spent just over a year planning their wedding before saying ‘I do’ at the beautiful Matara Centre in Gloucestershire.

Painted wooden coasters as favours. 16

As soon as they saw the venue, Emma and Nikul instantly knew it was perfect for them. With equally gorgeous interiors and exteriors, they fell in love with the grounds and knew it would perfectly compliment their unique theme: trees and saris! It was important to them that they incorporated both Western and Eastern aesthetics into their decor, so they used recycled sari fabrics to adorn the venue. When it came to colours, they didn’t want to limit themselves to a specific palette, which can be seen in their beautiful pastel blue cake, mismatched bridesmaid dresses and wildflower arrangements. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

M oment s Emma’s favourite moment: “Seeing each other for the first time as I walked through the moon gate into the cloistered courtyard. It was the beginning of a magical day.”

After the ceremony, the guests were invited to share a lovely moment where they planted a tree for Emma’s late mum, each tying a piece of colourful ribbon to the branches. This special moment perfectly sums up their personalised approach to their big day. Emm

Say ‘I Do’ to Celebrant Ceremonies Jessica Sey from Pomp and Ceremonies worked for the registration service for 10 years, in that time she officiated at nearly 1000 ceremonies. Now, she offers a bespoke ceremony designand celebrancy service to couples who want a personal, relevant, fun wedding ceremony which really reflects them as a couple. What’s so different about using a celebrant? Celebrants give couples freedom with their ceremony. They can create their own vows, include poems, readings and music to suit their tastes, plus it means they can choose an unregistered venue and any time of day for the ceremony. Legal ceremonies have to be done in a certain way to be legal. Can your ceremonies include religious or spiritual elements? If a county council registrar attends a ceremony, couples will probably have never even spoken to them before the big day, let alone met them. I meet or Skype/Facetime with all my couples, sometimes on a number of occasions so I can get to know them and exactly what they want from their ceremony. Registrars are bound by laws as to what they can do, so choice of what can be included in their ceremonies is limited, by contrast, my couples have free reign! I love getting to know them so I can design their ceremony and write a script to tell the story of them as a couple - how they met, the important people in their lives, anecdotes etc’. They can include as many readings, as much music, as much fun as they want to! Being in the industry such a long time I am on hand to offer ideas and inspiration if it’s needed. After the initial meeting I get busy creating the script and co-ordinating all the elements of the ceremony. I’m always contactable for any changes or additions. At busy times

registrars work to a very tight schedule… I never celebrant more than 1 ceremony a day. Another great plus of using an independent celebrant is that you don’t have to use licensed premises, you can hold your ceremony wherever you please, a lovely hotel, a marquee in a meadow, a windswept beach, the choices are endless. How do couples legalise their marriage? It’s easy! Couples should arrange to give notice at their local register office and book a “statutory marriage”. A statutory marriage means the couple and 2 witnesses will go at an arranged time to say a few legal words and sign the marriage register, the couple are then free to have whatever sort of ceremony they want, wherever they want!. Are Celebrants value for money? Gosh yes! When registration officers attend a wedding, depending on the county and day, they can charge up to £750. Celebrant fees are usually reflective of this, yet the bespoke services they offer are VASTLY different! What happens on the big day? I arrive at the venue in plenty of time to welcome guests and soothe any nervous participants! I co-ordinate and deliver a personal, relevant, fun and, quite often, moving ceremony and then I am there, ready to cheer the couple down the aisle to their celebrations!

WEDDING PLANNER

What to look for in a wedding planner… The most important aspect to look for in a wedding planner is whether you get on. This is essential as you want to enjoy the process of planning your wedding together. If your personalities clash then it simply won’t work. Planners vary in which approach they take to planning, so think about what you would like the planner to do. This could be a superorganised approach or to be creative with the ideas. Some planners are logical whilst others are more creative, so make sure you know what approach you would like.

Wedding Consultancy and Planning

Always hire from a well-known and established company, as you want a professional wedding planner who will take on a business perspective rather than seeing the planning process as just a hobby. Expert planners like Julia Siburn have been planning events for decades, and will know all the best contacts. A great wedding planner must understand the couple’s vision for the wedding. It should reflect your own personal style rather than theirs, and should represent you as a couple. Finally, use your wedding planner! Ask them to arrange appointments, recommend suppliers and talk to the venue and catering team. They can handle logistics and negotiation while you relax and enjoy being engaged. CATERING

Wood-fired pizzas Jacks Kitchen offers delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas cooked in their 1 metre wood-fired oven to add a touch of Italian class to your wedding menu. Choose from classics like margarita or pepperoni, or mix things up like unusual toppings like parma ham, black pepper fennel salami and artichokes. Pimped up BBQ Barbecues are always popular for wedding breakfasts, but the ‘pimped up’ offering from Jacks Kitchen puts a fun spin on a British classic. Options include Indian spiced spatchcocked chicken, chimichurri ribeye steak, and Asian-style tofu with kimchi for vegetarians.

Dirty burgers If you’re planning a casual wedding, then what better way to cater for the crowds than delicious burgers? Jacks Kitchen offer rarebreed cheeseburgers with bacon jam, crispy spiced fish burgers and mac and cheese burgers with BBQ stout sauce, meaning there’s something here for everyone. Thai feast Eastern flavours are becoming increasingly popular for weddings, and Jacks Kitchen has picked up on the trend. We love the sound of their green papaya salad, thai spiced pork with jasmine rice and cheesecake pots with spiced pineapple and passionfruit. Bowl and grab This fun take on mini meals is ideal for evening catering, as your guests can enjoy bowls of food while still mingling. Jacks Kitchen can create practically anything you like in bowl and grab form, including stews, currys, mac and cheese, summer salads and chargrilled meats. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

MARQUEES

How to add personal touches to your marquee wedding SIZE Whether you’re wanting your marquee to fill a small garden or large field, marquees are available in all shapes and sizes. This allows lots of flexibility with guest lists, location and design. FABULOUS FLOORING Most marquees come with standard matting flooring, however, there is always room for adding that personal touch. Whether you opt for carpet, elegant tiles or a disco dance floor – the choice is yours. A BLANK CANVAS Whether you are dreaming of a moroccan themed lounge or a fairy lit wonderland, marquees enable you to get creative with your decor and styling. FLEXIBLE SECTIONING Parts of a marquee can be easily sectioned off. You could have one section for the wedding breakfast, one for the dance floor and a hidden section for the caterers. OUTDOOR PURSUITS Marquee weddings are great for a Summer wedding. Be at one with nature, incorporating fire pits, tree swings and picnic areas into your big day. LUXURY TOUCHES Just because you’re marrying in a marquee, doesn’t mean you have to settle for Portaloos. There are plenty of luxury mobile toilets for hire with separate ladies and gents stalls, proper basins, towels, and mirrors. You could even create bathroom baskets for your guests. o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

VIDEOGRAPHY We spoke to Jo from Gloucestershire-based videographers Capture and Cut to find out more about why you should have a professional wedding video… Thanks to Jo for her top tips! See more at captureandcut.co.uk

1. It gives you a wider perspective of the whole day, and allows the wedding couple to see parts of the wedding that they would not normally see or might have missed 2. It’s a one-off opportunity to film all the families together, and to record voices and mannerisms that can’t be captured with still photographs 3. It provides the bride and groom with moving footage that they can show to future generations - just imagine showing your wedding video to your children or grandchildren! 4. It allows all family members and friends to share the event, even when they can’t be there on the day. This is not only important for elderly relatives, but also those who live abroad. 5. Not only is it a nice thing to share with friends and family, but it’s also a wonderful personal reminder for the two of you. 6. Watching the film after the event is a great way to celebrate with loved ones, and is lovely to do after the excitement of the big day has died down. 7. Worried about your budget? A wedding video makes a perfect gift from the parents of the bride or groom.

Wedding and Event Filming Specialists...

8. Sometimes messages or vows can be added as a voice over, which adds an amazing effect to your wedding video. 9. Your day goes by in a flash, and you’re likely to miss some key details in the blur of excitement. A wedding video lets you enjoy important moments at your own pace.

our wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life and travelling to your ceremony is a truly exciting part of the day. Your wedding transport sets the tone and feel of your wedding and reflects you, your personality and style. From the moment you are picked up with your nearest and dearest, your wedding journey really begins; full of emotions and excitement, your wedding transport enhances all of these feelings and leaves long lasting memories. There are many ways to customise wedding transport depending what it is: from beautiful cars to vintage buses and from horse drawn carriages to tractors. Each type of wedding transport can be customised in whatever way the bride and groom want from ribbons, bows

and flowers that match the couple’s colour scheme, to more bespoke touches such as a style or theme. The wedding transport says a lot about the couple and gives a glimpse into them. Our beautiful and iconic Volkswagen Campervans can be personalised to the wedding couple’s taste, in any way. And they were designed to transport everyone: brides and bridesmaids always have room for their dresses; flower girls and page boys love arriving in style and the groom and the best men love the classic sound of an air-cooled VW designed by Porsche. We love getting to know the couple and learning about their journey together to help personalise their wedding transport.

Trends, Ideas & Inspiration for 2019

Feathers For real old-school glamour, embrace feathers this season. Whether it’s a flowing ostrich feather skirt, fluttery feather trims on sleeves or cozy feather cover-ups, feathers add beautiful texture to any wedding dress. We’ve also seen cleverly cut feathereffect fabric skirts, which is perfect for brides who want the lighter-than-air look without the use of actual feathers.

Bows A sweet detail we see cropping up time and time again is bows! From chic pussy-bow details tied at the neck to retro, kitschy embellishments or dreamy tulle bows tied at the back, it looks like designers are falling in love with bows all over again for 2019.

Dress by Watters

Sheer and nude effect gowns were a popular trend for 2018, and we can see it going strong into 2019. Practically every collection at London Bridal Week included nude, blush and champagne-coloured liners, combined with sheer bodices and cut-outs for a daring ‘naked’ effect Take it one step further with flowing sheer lace skirts - we love this look for destination brides.

Brides have been wanting to customise their looks more and more in recent years, and bridal brands are designing to reflect that. We’re expecting to see plenty of toppers, capes, overskirts and detachable trains this year, all of which are designed to give wedding dresses a new look that’s easily customised to each bride. This trend is also extending to bridal accessories too think embroidered veils, hand-painted shoes and initial clutches.

Customisation

It’s official – blue is the new blush! Pastel shades are appearing in more and more bridal collections, with pale blue being the most popular. We’ve seen bridal gowns ranging from the lightest of baby blues to deeper, steelier shades, and it works with embroidered or applique detail too. If this trend appeals to you, why not have your ‘something blue’ be your dress?!

Gold Savin London - credit lucalatrofa.com

This is another trend that’s been up and coming since last season, and it’s still going strong for 2019 – partly thanks to Meghan Markle and her stunning high neck reception dress from Stella McCartney. Whether you wear it with a racerback and bare shoulders or go for a Victoriana-inspired high neck and long sleeve combo, this bridal trend isn’t going anywhere.

Gold is by far the standout metallic shade of the season. From gold embroidery and brocade to sequins, glitter and beading, this trend is coming up golden - simply add metallic accessories for the full metallic effect.

which makes it a brilliant choice for bridesmaid dresses, and with roses, dahlias and peonies coming in a range of coral and peach tones, you won’t struggle to match your flowers. Pair with metallics such as gold or copper

for a warm, chic look, or try bright pops of colour with electric turquoises and sunny yellows. If pastels are more your style, Living Coral works perfectly with sage greens and duck egg blues. We love this versatile shade!

Body Prep for the Big Day –

without losing your mind…

I

t’s an unfortunate truth that brides often feel under immense pressure to lose weight or drastically change their looks before the big day, which leads to unnecessary stress and unhealthy yo-yodieting in the lead up to the wedding. Even if you do want to slim down or tone up before the big day, doing this healthily and in a safe time frame is key to staying sane during your engagement. Here are our top tips for healthy and happy wedding body prep…

48

Be realistic, and plan in advance These two go hand in hand. If you’re carrying a few extra pounds than you would be usually, or you’re a little more out of shape, then it makes perfect sense to want to be at your best for your wedding day. However, you shouldn’t strive to completely transform the look of your body, or get down to a target weight that you haven’t been since you were a teenager - all this does is set unrealistic goals for yourself, and then you’ll feel angry and upset when you can’t achieve them. If you want to do some body prep before the wedding, then give yourself as much time as possible so you can make small, healthy changes and don’t end up starving yourself on a crash diet or exhausting yourself at the gym.

www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Exercise for fun Wedding planning is exhausting enough without wearing yourself out by spending hours at the gym. If you’re already a gym bunny, then that’s great, and you can just up your routine or join a new class. However, if you usually hate exercise, then now’s not the time to plough money into an expensive new gym membership. Instead, why not start taking a dance class with your fiance? You’ll learn some moves for your first dance and drop the pounds at the same time! Alternatively, try something like yoga or pilates, which focuses on the mind as much as the body and can help you settle nervous energy. Even walking can be beneficial, as exercise is proven to help stress - just make sure you’re doing it to feel healthier and happier, not to squeeze into a wedding dress. Speaking of which...

Buy a dress you feel happy in Whatever you do, don’t buy a wedding dress that you don’t 100% love with the aim of slimming into it. If you don’t love the way you look in it on the first try, then chances are you’re not going to love it when it comes to the fitting - and by that point, it will be too late. Instead, buy a dress that you love the look of now, and then any slimming down or toning up you do between now and then will be a nice bonus when it comes to the fitting.

Avoid short-term fixes Sadly, some companies will prey on brides who feel under pressure to lose weight by selling them quick fixes and detoxes. Don’t fall for these scams and miracle diets, as they’re often too good to be true, and will leave you feeling unhealthy, unhappy and out of pocket. Making healthy lifestyle changes and losing a maximum of 2lb a week is the best way to slim down - after all, weight that comes off slowly is more likely to stay off. WEDDING HAIR TOP WEDDING HAIR TIPS 1. Take your wedding theme into consideration when choosing your style. For a relaxed, boho day, a fishtail plait or mermaid waves with fresh flower accessories would be perfect. For an elegant black-tie affair, why not try Hollywood curls pinned to the side, or a chignon paired with sparkling pins? 2. If in doubt, match the neckline of your dress. Strapless dresses work well with loose hair, or half-up, half-down styles, while high or busy necklines work better with updos. 3. Work with your natural texture. Hair has a mind of its own, so it’s often best to stick to a style with the hair’s natural tendency. For example, if your hair is naturally curly, choose a wavy or curly style. It means your ‘do will last throughout the day and your photos will look good from start to finish. 4. If you want a style with lots of body and volume or a complicated updo, but you naturally have short or fine hair, then you may want to consider clip-in extensions to help you get your dream look.

FLORISTS

Q. What wedding flower trends were popular in 2018, and what are you expecting to see in 2019? A. Classic English country garden flowers were emerging last year rather than the rustic hedgerow feel that has been popular for the last few years. So far this year, the style seems to be becoming even more formal, with large installations offering huge amounts of wow factor appearing in many venues.

We spoke to Adam from Cirencester florist Oops-A-Daisy to find out more about the latest wedding flower trends...

Q. What flowers do you recommend for brides searching for the new Pantone colour of the year, coral? A. The “Miss Piggy” Rose is perfect for this colour, although the name isn’t ideal for a bride! Dahlias come in this colour too, as well as Lisianthus and Peonies.

Q. When do you recommend brides pick their florist? A. It’s a good idea to come in a year prior to the wedding to get a good idea of what flowers are available at that time of year. It also helps to have an idea of colours, venue and guest numbers before a consultation. Q. What options are available to brides on a tight budget? A. A good florist will be able to create the style you desire using in season flowers, which is better for the environment and will keep costs down. GfB The Wedding Directory 2019

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last.Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.

3 Visiting a wedding fair soon? Here’s how to make the most of it…

1

Wear comfy shoes! Wedding fairs can be huge, especially the national shows, so it’s a long day on your feet. Wear comfortable flats that you know won’t give you blisters. If you want to try on wedding dresses, you can always bring a pair of heels in your bag.

2

Speaking of bags, be sure to bring a large bag with a comfortable strap, as you’ll be getting lots of magazines, samples and leaflets on the day to carry around with you.

66

Make sure you bring the right people with you. Wedding fairs make for the perfect girly day out, but if you have a large bridal party, you may not want to bring all the bridesmaids. The maid of honour and the mother of the bride are perfect wedding fair companions, and we also recommend bringing the groom along. That way you can make any decisions together.

4 5

Plan ahead. Take a look at who’s going to be attending the fair and make a note of which suppliers you want to visit, so you can plan a strategy.

Make sure your ducks are in a row financially. Many wedding fair suppliers will have great offers and discounts available to attendees, but you may have to be prepared to put down a deposit on the day.
