ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

e u n e V g n i d d e W Tips for choosing your
When choosing and booking your dream wedding venue, there are many things to think about: Here are the top ten points you should consider before making the big decision.
Checklist 1. Where?
Countryside or city? Home or abroad? Deciding a location means that you will know where to start looking.
2. License to Marry If you’re planning a civil ceremony then check whether the venue holds the appropriate license.
3. Capacity Who’s on your guest list? There’s no point considering a venue which cannot accommodate all your guests!
4. Catering Options If you are looking to hire independent caterers then this is something that should be checked with your prospective venue, as you may be obliged to use inhouse caterers.
5. Exclusivity Many venues offer exclusive use. There may be an additional charge or a minimum number of bedrooms you need to book.
12

Checklist
6. How long can you Party? If you’re planning to “party all night”, then make sure you ask the venue what time they can keep the bar open and music playing.
7. Wedding Planner Does the venue offer a coordinator to assist you with planning, or to help on the day?
8. Dressing the Venue If you’re keen to add your personal touch to the decor then remember to ask your venue what they include. You can then plan any additional extras.
9. Room at the Inn? Many guests will be keen to stay overnight. Ask the venue about accommodation options and discounts for wedding guests.
10. Reputation Check out reviews from other brides who have used the same venue.

annah and Chris met at Notting Hill Carnival in 2011. Standing in the queue to an after party at a pub, Hannah realised she had lost her ticket. Luckily, Chris was standing behind her and offered her his spare, and the rest is history! 4 years later, he proposed with a plastic ring from Primark (he wasn’t quite brave enough to choose a real one)! They celebrated their wedding day at The Crown & Thistle in Abingdon with a festival theme as the couple have always enjoyed going to festivals together. Their flowers were placed in childrens’ wellington boots and their tables were named after festivals they had attended. Hannah chose a beautiful Maggie Sottero dress which made her feel (and look) like a total film star.
Their theme reflected their love of festivals. 24
Entertainment was an important part of their day - Hannah put ‘how well do you know us’ quizzes on each table for their guests and provided a large deck of playing cards and specified rules for the drinking game ‘Ring of Fire’. It was a game that they always used to play at parties and was a great break from dancing (and eating!) for their friends. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
Their favourite part of the day was seeing the totally packed dance floor and partying away with all their friends and family.

What guests really think about gift lists... You might be surprised! Having a wedding gift list is a no-brainer for couples. It’s a oncein-a-lifetime wish list that someone else pays for. But many feel that the big issue is what guests will think and whether they are happy buying the gifts you’ve chosen. No need to guess, Prezola asked over 1,000 guests what they think about wedding gifts – so there’s no mind-reading involved. So what do guests really think..?
Guests really do want to give you a gift The good news is that guests want to give you a gift to celebrate your marriage. It’s traditional and they’d like to give you something to commemorate your special day.
What kind of gifts do guests like giving? Guests love choosing a gift that will remind you of them and their gift for years to come. The traditional staples of glassware and tableware remain at the top of the list with 57% and 53% of guests saying this was their preferred gift to give.
How much do guests spend? This normally depends on your relationship, their salary and the size of your wedding. The majority of guests spend between £50 and £100 on a gift while 10% will go further and spend over £100. 36
By Prezola - the modern wedding gift list. prezola.com
Guests like to buy personal gifts Make it personal. Guests love to give gifts that they think are ‘so you’ so don’t be afraid to choose things that are special to you as a couple.
What about asking for cash? When it comes to planning your gift list, asking for cash is a hot topic! While some guests are horrified by the idea, others are completely happy to give you cash in place of a wedding gift. Just bear in mind that some guests prefer to buy physical gifts rather than cash, 59% in fact. 49% say it’s the traditional thing to do, while 42% like the idea that the gift will last a long time.
Guests like to know what cash gifts are going towards Many guests see cash as impersonal and meaningless when they’re not sure where it’s being spent, with some guests assuming it’s to pay off credit cards. Guests are more positive with contributions towards something specific, such as your honeymoon or a big purchase.
What’s the best solution? First of all have a gift list! Not only does it make things easy for your guests, but you can get what you really want. With Prezola you can mix cash with gifts, all on one list. Those who prefer to buy you a physical gift are able to, while others can use the honeymoon fund. Guests simply want to help make memories and contribute towards your newlywed life together. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Celebrants Planning your Wedding? Do you want to hold it in a venue that is not registered or at a time that suits your guests? Do you feel restricted by the vows on offer? Do you have quirky, romantic ideas that you would like to include?
Then you need a Wedding Celebrant. Let me be part of your wedding team.
A celebrant will allow you to exchange your vows, your way. With a celebrant, you can say ‘I Do’ anywhere that takes your fancy, at any time, in any way, shape or form! This is the ideal way to reflect your personal beliefs and lifestyle: There are no restrictions on the words, music or readings you could even get married in an aquarium! Remember though - for your marriage to be legally valid in the UK, you must also be sure to have it registered somewhere licensed, such as a Registry Office.

Top tips for
Planning your
Wedding P lanning a wedding can be overwhelming - there are so many aspects to think about and decisions to make. However, it’s also a really fun process; there’s nothing more rewarding than arriving on your wedding day and seeing your vision and dreams come to life. To get you started with planning your own wedding, check out these top tips from Angela Gibson, a luxury wedding planner based in Hampshire.
WHEN BUDGET IS LIMITED, CHOOSE YOUR PRIORITIES The first step to planning your wedding is taking time to discuss your priorities as a couple. Break the priorities down into three categories: absolutely essential, very important and nice to have. This ensures that you include the elements of the day that are important to you both. DECIDE WHO YOU REALLY WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON Your guests will make your wedding the most amazing day of your lives, but they are expensive! Cutting down your guest list by ten people could easily save you more than £1000. Up to 30% of those invited will not attend, so break your guest list down into the essentials, the nice to haves and the maybes. After you’ve done this - consider how many children will be accompanying those guests, how that impacts your budget and space and how you feel about having children around during your day. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE WEDMIN It can take around 250 hours to plan a wedding, so think carefully about your wedding date. 40
Consider how long it gives you to plan and how much time you can realistically dedicate to planning. It’s always worth calling on friends and family to help or employing a wedding planner to do some, or all, of the work. BOOK YOUR SUPPLIERS ACCORDING TO PRIORITY Now I don’t mean your priorities here, I mean those that need reserving first. For example, don’t book the musicians until you have your venue secured and choose www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
Enjoy it! Remember, planning a wedding is fun! Take time to sit back and enjoy the process you’ll miss it once it’s over.
comprehensive notes of conversations you’ve had with everyone that you can refer back to. TRUST IN YOUR SUPPLIERS You’ll be employing around 30 suppliers to bring together your perfect day. Choose people that you can rely on, that you enjoy working closely with and that you can trust to do the job. Ask for recommendations from other couples, or venues and talk to the supplier about your vision. BUDGET FOR THOSE UNFORESEEN EXTRAS No matter how organised you are or how carefully you watch your budget, there will always be something that costs a little more than expected. I recommend leaving 5% of your overall budget for those unforeseen expenses. your flowers before designing the cake. The checklists in this guide are the perfect way to ensure that you’re on the right track. SPREADSHEETS ARE YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND You’ll need to record absolutely everything that happens from now on - create checklists for each supplier as well as a guest list with individual details and requirements (the Guides for Brides Online Wedding Planner is perfect for this). Most importantly, keep GfB The Wedding Directory 2018
MAKE A TIMELINE FOR THE DAY It is absolutely essential to make a timeline for the day so that everyone knows where they should be and what they should be doing. Once you’ve made the timeline, visit the venue with key party members and walk through as you will on your wedding day this will make you so much more relaxed on the actual day and ensure that everything runs smoothly. o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

Given the indulgent dÊcor, they opted for an understated colour scheme with Ricky, his ushers and the Maid of Honour wearing blue, and chose white flowers with dark foliage and berries. As the couple celebrated their wedding day in the Autumn, they placed vases with lights and golden pine cones on the tables for a warm, natural look. Amy had turned their spare bedroom into an arts and crafts room in the lead up to the wedding - making the table plan, place cards and a scrabble game where their guests could leave them messages on wooden hearts. Amy got ready at their house with her Maid of Honour - they have been best friends for 26 years and sharing this special moment with her over a glass of champagne

was just perfect. Amy later walked down the aisle with her Father and Step Father on each arm to the Superman theme music by John Williams! Superman was one of her favourite films growing up, and her choice of music was certainly a surprise for her guests (which you could tell from the laughs)! They then celebrated their reception with The Crazy Bear’s famous canapés and a delicious three course meal. The whole day was even more perfect than they could ever have hoped for.

Our new honeymoon finder is the best way to plan that perfect trip. We’re not tied to one tour operator, one hotel group or one region. Our website brings you the very best options for each honeymoon destination, so you can choose what is right for YOU. Browse by destination, flight time, month, honeymoon type, or be inspired by the top ten destinations.

HONEYMOON PLANNING - MADE EASY
Honeymoon Inspiration:
Riviera Maya, Mexico Tucked deep in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and home to descendants of the ancient Mayan people, you’ll find The Riviera Maya - a haven for honeymooners.
W
hite sand beaches, warm blue waters and luxury hotels line this beautiful stretch of coastline, as well as providing a home to the odd baby sea turtle or two. Whether you’re planning on sunning yourself on the beach every day or hoping to explore the cultural side of this area, you won’t be disappointed. Riviera Maya is a paradise for tourists.
What to do If you’re looking for an adventure, Riviera Maya has everything you need to unleash the explorer 58
in you. A trip to the cenotes that fame the area is an absolute must. Found only on the Yucatan Peninsula, it’s easy to see why the Mayans consider these incredible sinkholes sacred. Often referred to as “sunken caves”, cenotes boast crystal clear fresh waters and incredible scenery (make sure you take your snorkel as most cenotes boast incredible biodiversity). Help protect these beautiful natural phenomenons by visiting one of the ecotourism centres, which are trying to protect the natural area from the effects of mass tourism. There are plenty of dive and snorkeling sites where you’ll be met with a wealth of marine www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
Honeymoon Inspiration: Mexico life. Most hotels offer specific diving and snorkeling trips, ensuring that you reach the best spots. Visit in the autumn and you might be lucky enough to witness turtle hatching, with many hotels boasting their own conservation teams. You can even witness one of the New Seven Wonders of the World with a visit to Chichen Itza - a complex of breathtaking Mayan ruins with a rich anecdotal history.
How to get there Riviera Maya lies about an hour south of its rather more built up, streetwise sister, Cancun and is easily accessible from the airport via transfer. Enjoy taking in the swathes of jungle on your journey before reaching the crystalline waters just beyond.
Where to stay There are so many five star hotels in this area that’s it’s difficult to decide where to rest your head at night, but for us, there’s no truer luxury break than that found at UNICO 20°87°, where traditional, Mayan touches meet outstanding all-inclusive facilities. The vast majority of rooms here boast a breathtaking sea view, with rooms tastefully decorated to remind you of the history and culture that fame the Yucatan Peninsula. Enjoy champagne bubble baths on your balcony (almost all of the rooms have this facility) and mouth watering cuisine at the many a la carte restaurants on offer during your stay. A real luxury honeymoon escape.

S
ally and Jee both attended Oxford University and met through the Korean Oxon network. They later started working for the same law firm and attended the same church, getting together after having known each other for seven years. Eight months later, Jee proposed after the regular Thursday evening prayer session at their church. He had decorated the whole place with tea lights and sang her the same song he sang to her when they first got together. It was a big surprise and a deeply moving moment. They later chose Sally’s beautiful cushion cut solitaire engagement ring together at Tiffany’s.
For their KoreanChristian wedding, pink was their colour scheme. 62
Since both Sally and Jee studied at Oxford, The Bodleian Library at the University was the perfect venue choice. They chose a light pink colour scheme for their hybrid Korean-Christian wedding, which complemented the venue perfectly. Although they didn’t have traditional bridesmaids or groomsmen, they did have several close friends who helped them on the day. After exchanging their vows in a very moving ceremony, they enjoyed a typical three course wedding menu accompanied by lounge music. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Ultra
t e l o i V
Vibrant & Vivacious
This year, ultra violet has been announced as Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year. We’ve come up with some stunning ways you can style your day with this hot new colour trend.
Expert event planners have been raving about ceiling potential and what better way to catch the eyes of your guests than with some statement floral pieces. Weaving greenery or hanging garlands are perfect for creating a sense of wonder and enchantment. Why not try out this bold colour with a selection of succulent plants - eyecatching designs that require less water and look fresher for longer!
Jewellery Rather keep things subtle? Why not try a dash of colour with a dazzling necklace or droplet earrings.
Tableware
Wedding Cake You could stick to a traditional white wedding cake with a few ultra violet accents, or why not challenge your cake designer with this show-stopping delight. 70
Flower clippings, jars and jugs have been making a big appearance on Pinterest this year - something about that rustic barn feel! Make it elegant and fill those centrepieces with delicate purple flowers, or add a bit of fun with some delicious lollipop favours in our new favourite shade. The colour of the year can’t be wrong! www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Which metal is best for your
WEDDING BAND? Why can’t I have a pure gold wedding band? Pure gold is too soft for jewellery, so it’s mixed with metal alloys to create different colours and ensure that it is hard-wearing.
metal types Platinum Hard-wearing with a cool luster, this rare metal is perfect if you’re after a durable ring that won’t lose its colour or brilliance. Despite being a more expensive choice, a platinum ring will last a lifetime and is considered the most prestigious metal for jewellery.
White Gold If you’re looking for the natural white colour of platinum without the pricetag, white gold is a great option. White gold rings use pure gold alloyed with various other white metals and are plated with rhodium to give their brilliant white colour, which does wear away over time. Replating is a simple process, which will restore your band to its former brilliance.
Palladium This white precious metal forms part of the platinum group, but can be more affordable. Popular for its hardness and natural white colour that won’t fade, palladium rings are durable option that provide a stunning backdrop for diamonds.
Yellow Gold With its warm mixture of pure gold, copper and silver, yellow gold is once again proving a popular choice for wedding bands. The carat of yellow gold you choose will make a difference to the colour and hardness of the band, so bear this in mind when matching your wedding band to your engagement ring.
Rose Gold Rose gold includes a higher percentage of copper, giving it its red tones. An on-trend choice for wedding bands, it is surprisingly affordable and more hard-wearing than yellow or white gold. Like with yellow gold, the carat affects the colour of the ring: A higher percentage of gold will give the ring a lighter rose gold tone, while more copper will give more of a red colour. By Cakes by Kit 1. How long have you been making wedding cakes?
It’s good to know that your cake maker has experience with wedding cakes and not just small celebration cakes. They will then know the best way to transport, assemble and support the cake safely to your wedding venue.
2. What flavours do you provide and can we have a different flavour in each layer?
It’s a good idea to choose a few flavours that will offer a varied range for your guests. Different flavours for different layers means there will be something to suit everyone. At your tasting session make sure you consider the flavours alongside any dessert choices so that they compliment each other.
3. Is there an extra cost for a bespoke design?
Some cake makers may charge for bespoke designs, so make sure you’ve discussed your

specific requirements and the cost before signing on the dotted line!
4. Will you deliver and set up the cake?
Many designers will happily deliver your wedding cake - they liaise with the venue and florists to arrange a suitable time to deliver and assemble. Make sure you know how your cake is arriving at your venue well in advance to give you a stress-free wedding day.
5. Where can I see examples of your previous work?
Always look at examples of their work – it’s a great way to get inspiration for your own cake! Look up your supplier on www.guidesforbrides.co.uk, where you’ll see plenty of images of their work and reviews from previous couples. All cakes opposite are designed and created by Cakes By Kit.

Wedding styles and trends are forever changing and evolving. Classic Whites
The classic white wedding cake is perfect for all seasons and for couples wishing to add an element of classic luxury to their wedding. Classic white wedding cakes are often highly decorated with intricate detail to give each cake a bespoke design to suit the wedding theme and style. Handmade sugar flowers, ruffles,

pearls, ribbons, lace and petals can all be styled to give different textures and a flair of elegance. The classic white will always look chic and beautiful. Giving you the flexibility to be as detailed or as simple as you wish, they’ll suit any elegant wedding style perfectly.

Decadence
The decadent cake is a lavish trend for opulent and indulgent weddings. These large cakes cater for a large number of guests and are a real focal point at a grand wedding breakfast. The design aspects of the decadence cake are limitless. They are elaborately decorated
using Royal Icing, the perfect material to use on luxurious and grand wedding cakes. Rich, opulent colour tones are styled and embellished with jewels, pearls, sequins and sugar detailing, giving each cake a stunning regal flare.
Warm Metallics
Soft rose gold and copper tones are on trend in the interiors and fashion world, meaning we’re seeing these metallic tones within the wedding industry, too. Most popular around autumn time, warm metallics are now becoming increasingly popular all year round. The beauty GfB The Wedding Directory 2018
of these cakes is that they can be either bold or subtle depending on your theme. The design options are endless with the use of chic metallic sequins, materials and textures to create a unique cake to suit your style. Our thanks to Ann’s Designer Cakes. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk/blog/caketrends18

By On Cloud Nine Stationery
Are Save the Dates Compulsory? The short answer to this is no! If you’re planning a wedding just a few months in advance, you can simply send invitations. However, if your wedding is more than six months away they’re a brilliant way to make sure your guests get your date in the diary.
How far in advance should invitations be sent out? Traditionally, invitations are sent six to twelve weeks before the wedding date. However, since the introduction of Save the Dates, this can fluctuate a lot - just give everyone enough time to arrange babysitters and accommodation!
Would an email invitation not suffice? An email might be appropriate for some of your guests, but others may find it a little understated. A beautiful invitation really gives guests an idea of what’s to come on your wedding day.
88
www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
What details should we include in our invitations? The date, time and details of the wedding and reception venues are imperative. If the ceremony and the reception are both at the same place it’s advisable to add something along the lines of “To be followed by a wedding breakfast and evening reception” so that guests know the celebrations will continue after the ceremony. It’s also helpful to include a “carriages at…” time to inform your guests of what time the celebrations will end. You could also include an information card with other details about the wedding, such as your gift list or information on local accommodation, as well as the RSVP card.

Fireworks
By Illusion Fireworks
Things to consider if you want wedding fireworks. Does my venue allow fireworks? It’s important to find out if your wedding venue allows fireworks most do but some may have restrictions. The venue may have a preferred supplier, they may specify the fireworks must be over by a certain time or that only ‘low noise’ fireworks may be used. Very few venues allow you to set off your own fireworks due to the insurance liability.
How much should we spend? Think about what kind of display you’d like. Are you looking for a £10,000 multiple site masterpiece or a £500 flurry of golden willows. Realistically a wedding fireworks display should cost between £1000 and £3500.
Can we have fireworks to music? Fireworks choreographed with split second accuracy to music will provide your guests with a memory they will never forget. Fireworks visually reinforce the powerful emotions experienced while listening to music, so the two together create a unique spectacle. It’s best to have a dedicated PA between the audience and the fireworks - a DJ playing music from the marquee will be overpowered by the display. 92
www.guidesforbrides.co.uk
Can we have our wedding colours in the display? Of course! Whether you want your wedding colours to feature at the beginning and end of a display, or a show-stopping firework rainbow, or even love heart shells (always a winner with the crowd!), there are plenty of opportunities to personalise the display.
GfB The Wedding Directory 2018
Is it easy to arrange a fireworks display? With the right supplier, arranging a fireworks display couldn’t be simpler. Decide what you’re looking for from the display and how much you’re willing to spend, and your fireworks supplier will sort the rest.

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last.Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. This is a great way to ensure that your bridal look is exactly what you envisaged. We also encourage making sure that all your balances

our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.
