Brahms Academic Festival Overture Walton Belshazzar’s Feast Hear two magnificent classical choral works alongside some of the best contemporary jazz as Guildhall muscians open the new academic year in style. Newly-appointed Guildhall professor Iain Ballamy joins Guildhall musicians for a special performance of his pastoral-themed music in a set arranged by Head of Jazz, Malcolm Edmonstone. In the second half, epic musical forces – baritone soloist, large chorus, brass bands, organ and orchestra – play out Walton’s adventurous oratorio depicting the fall of Babylon. Strings at Six A performance snapshot from the Strings and Chamber Music departments.
A new play performed by Lucy Stevens with musical accompaniment, Whattalife! tells the story of one of Britain’s phenomenal women of the 20th century: Kathleen Ferrier – from her debut as a singer in 1940 and her meteoric rise to her tragic death in 1953. Professional actress and contralto Lucy Stevens has researched and created a unique and engaging performance; the text is taken straight from Kathleen’s letters and diaries. Sung music from her repertoire is woven through the text, with music direction by Guildhall School professor and alumna, Elizabeth Marcus. Whattalife! is the first staged dramatisation of Ferrier’s life, evoking the spirit of the war and post-war years. Just like Kathleen during her short but full life, the show has a sense of fun and talks straight from the heart.

Poet in the City: Lorca in New York Lyrical and fidgeting, Federico García Lorca’s intoxicating Poet in New York inhaled the sights and smells of a city in flux. In collaboration with the Guildhall School, Poet in the City transforms Milton Court into the whir of 1920s New York to combine live jazz music and performances from the text to reimagine the world of Lorca’s ‘sleepless city’. Introduced by Lorca specialist and expert of 20th century Spanish culture, Xon de Ros.

Sir Ronald Harwood Beloved Friend: The Strange Love Affair of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Nadezhda von Meck An opportunity to see the great Romantic composer in a more intimate light as Oscar-winning playwright Sir Ronald Harwood explores the relationship – highly unusual in that they never met – between Tchaikovsky and his patron Nadezhda von Meck. Guildhall Cantata Project Directed by James Johnstone John Blow Venus and Adonis The Guildhall Cantata Ensemble presents the last masque to be composed for the Stuart Court. Dvorˇák’s bright and rhythmic Piano Quintet is full of the composer’s memorable melodies and expertly balanced between the five instruments, while Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ Trio – named after his student, Carl Czerny, said the ominous second movement reminded him of the ghost of Hamlet’s father – is known for its dark and suspenseful quality. This concert marks violinist András Keller’s first performance as a new professor in the School’s Strings department. A double bill of contrasting Russian masterpieces, which both composers (who were famously self-critical) considered among their very best works. Stravinsky’s Mavra – dedicated to Tchaikovsky – is a neoclassical opera buffa of disguise and trickery and contrasts perfectly with Tchaikovsky’s own touchingly beautiful tale of Iolanta’s journey from blindness to enlightenment. The Tchaikovsky will be sung in Russian; the Stravinsky, as directed by the composer, in the vernacular. A Roald Dahl Adventure London Schools Symphony Orchestra Peter Ash conductor
Jean Sibelius arr. Peter Ash and Donald Sturrock The Minpins Peter Ash’s musical adaptation of The Minpins – Roald Dahl’s last work – brings to life this heart-warming story of a young boy and his adventures in the Forest of Sin. It features the music of Jean Sibelius, including extracts from The Tempest, the tone-poem Pan and Echo and his Swan White suite. The first orchestral work by Polish composer Karłowicz is a beautifully expressive four-movement serenade which includes a lyrical romance and a playful waltz. Junior Guildhall ensembles perform it alongside Dvorˇ ák’s thrilling and tempestuous Symphony No. 7, a statement of Czech nationalism written at the time of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and arguably the composer’s most ambitious work. Royal Musical Association 52nd Annual Conference The Guildhall School hosts the prestigious and long-running Royal Musical Association Annual Conference at our world-class Milton Court facilities. The eighteenth-century early music movement We have long known that the interest in musical classics dates back to the eighteenth century, with the Academy of Ancient Music leading the way from 1726. But the ramifications of this interest extended beyond the simple performance of ‘old’ composers’ works. As this paper will show, both in performance style and in the works of contemporary composers, eighteenthcentury musicians sought to engage with this most fashionable of musical pursuits. The Tale of Januarie is a new opera by an all-Guildhall School team based on Chaucer’s The Merchant’s Tale. Januarie, a wealthy knight has reached old age and decides it is time for him to marry. He selects May, a young girl, to be the companion of his dotage. But his servant Damyan is quickly smitten by the new bride, and she with him; and despite Januarie’s controlling nature, the lovers must find a way to consummate their passion. A comedy of love and age, the opera is sung in Middle English in order to enhance its authenticity, but also to heighten the comedy. Singers, drawn from the School’s Opera Course, will sing the premiere of this exciting and hilarious new work, having followed its development from page to stage. Wagner arr. Maazel The Ring Without Words Following his adjudication of the Gold Medal, Pietari Inkinen returns to the School to conduct the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra in an extraordinary arrangement of Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle, which contains all of the drama but none of the words.
