Europa em Guimarães 2012 Guimarães 2012 Capital Europeia da Cultura não deixa passar em branco o Dia da Europa enquanto efeméride, como não ignora a Europa em nenhum dos seus (muitos) dias. O 9 de Maio, data da Europa, é, por esta Capital Europeia da Cultura, interpretado numa aposta singular, no que há-de ser e no que fica: nas crianças, no improvável e nas relações duradouras. “Europa Naquele Lugar” acontece numa escola das Taipas, onde juntamos crianças e atores numa residência artística que incorpora o quotidiano dos alunos enquanto jovens cidadãos europeus como fonte de uma nova criação teatral que estreará em Setembro próximo e que invoca o nome do continente que nos une, estreia esta que habitará uma antiga fábrica têxtil que 2012 viu nascer como lugar criativo: a Fábrica ASA. Europa que, em Maio, tem muitos outros dias em Guimarães 2012. Tem todos os outros dias, estando presente em mais de uma centena de eventos que nos farão pensar e sentir que Europa de cultura construímos, dia após dia. Aqui desvendamos todos os dias de Maio em que sucede Europa na Capital Europeia da Cultura que tem nome de Guimarães. Porque a Europa, tal como um país, não se celebra num só dia. Celebra--se em cada um dos nossos dias, interpretando os muitos rostos que, em todos nós, dizem Europa.

Foi com “A Árvore dos Tamancos”, com que arrecadou a Palma de Ouro no Festival de Cannes de 1978, que o seu nome foi projetado internacionalmente, mas grande parte da sua obra foi desenvolvida durante os anos 50 num registo dramático em que as componentes documentais se combinavam, muitas vezes, com ficções interpretadas por atores não profissionais. Embora estas fossem características do cinema neo-realista italiano, o realizador rejeitava a ligação com este género cinematográfico. Em 1988, venceu o Leão de Ouro no Festival de Cinema de Veneza com “La leggenda Del santo bevitore”, obra baseada no romance de Joseph Roth. Os seus filmes, tal como a maioria dos considerados produto do movimento neo-realista, são filmados em takes longos e lentos, contendo muitas vezes fortes comentários sociais.
With “L’Albero degli zoccoli” (The Tree of Wooden Clogs), which earned him the Palme D’Or at the 1978 Cannes Festival, his name was internationally projected. Though a great part of his work was developed during the 50’s in a dramatic registry in which the documentary components would, sometimes, combine with fictions interpreted by non-professional actors. In 1988 won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with “La leggenda Del santo bevitore” (The legend of the Holy Drinker), based on the novel by Joseph Roth. As most of the movies from the neorealist movement, his work was shot with long and slow takes, containing, sometimes, strong social commentaries.

Projeto de criação que visa a construção coletiva de objetos audio-visuais e plásticos relacionados como exercício para o desenvolvimento do sentido crítico. Com uma abordagem que não esquece o valor transformador da diversão no trabalho e na criação, este projeto pretende criar, com diferentes grupos, uma pequena peça artística.
Nascidos de um trio de amigos, os Um Zero Amarelo souberam em pouco tempo conquistar um estatuto próprio. A forte componente emotiva dos seus temas permite-lhes transmitir as suas visões de um modo muito próprio, facto que os distancia de qualquer convenção sonora.

“Da imagem ao cliché, do cliché à imagem” apresenta ao leitor um fecundo diálogo entre filosofia e cinema, partindo do questionamento de uma crença que já se tornou lugar-comum na atualidade: a que condena a “civilização da imagem” e a “sociedade do espetáculo” em que supostamente a imagem teria substituído a palavra. “From the image to the cliché, from the cliché to the image” introduces the reader to a fruitful dialogue between philosophy and film, starting from the questioning of a belief that has already become a commonplace today: to what that condemns the “images’ culture” and “spectacle society” in which the image supposedly would have substituted the word.
Lindy Hop Portugal appears in order to invest in the development of the Lindy Hop and other vintage dances. This party recreates the seductive atmosphere of the golden age of Swing and invites the audience to dance to the sound of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Jimmie Lunceford and many others.
Creation project that aims to build collective audio-visual and plastic related objects as an exercise for the development of critical sense. With an approach that does not forget the transforming value of fun at work and in creation, this project aims to create with the different groups a small art piece.

A partir de uma partitura musical para violino, clarinete baixo e live electronics nascem jogos entre o som, a voz e o movimento, operando transformações. Durante as transformações, o movimento coreográfico e a palavra assumem uma linguagem universal, oferecendo uma experiência de sensações inexplicáveis mas sentidas. Through a musical score for violin, bass clarinet and live electronics games between the sound, the voice and the movement are born, operating transformations. Reunindo uma série de autores de diversas áreas – arquitetos, antropólogos, filósofos, arqueólogos e artistas, entre outros – que reposicionam criticamente a ideia de objeto, o projeto participa de uma discussão que contemporaneamente questiona a centralidade do humano no ordenamento do mundo e procura determinar de que forma o pensamento do objeto pode ir além dos limites da interpretação discursiva dominante. O projeto procura problematizar criticamente os processos pelos quais certos objetos se tornam participantes ativos e reconhecidos da vida da cidade articula-se em dois momentos: um seminário aberto intitulado Política dos Objetos – a ter lugar durante um período de dois dias – que focará os processos de constituição do objeto enquanto entidade legal; a edição de um volume de ensaio, Objetos Selvagens, que se debruçará sobre o discurso dos objetos e que contará com contribuições de produção portuguesa e internacional de destaque neste campo, procurando assim promover a internacionalização da produção crítica e artística portuguesa contemporânea.
Bringing together a number of authors from various fields – architects, anthropologists, philosophers, archaeologists and artists, among others – who critically reposition the idea of object, the project participates in a discussion that simultaneously questions the centrality of the human in the planning of the world and aims to question in which way the thought of the object can go beyond the dominant discursive interpretation. The project that aims to discuss critically the processes by which certain objects become active and recognized participants of the city life is divided in two phases: an open seminar entitled Policy of the Objects – taking place over a period of two days – which will focus on the processes of constitution of the object as a legal entity; editing a test volume, Wild Objects, which will look at the discourse of objects and which will feature proeminent contributions of portuguese and international production in this field, thus promoting the internationalization of production and critical portuguese contemporary art.

Europe is a creation that puts into play a shared reflection on the current condition of Europe, of its joint and / or multiple identity, in recent history. A provocation to young european citizens, that aims to follow the daily lives of students, inviting them to discuss the art materials generated in this context.
O projeto Fora de Portas tem como objetivo a descentralização do consumo cultural, nomeadamente da música, a partir de diferentes formações constituídas por elementos da Fundação Orquestra Estúdio. A música viajará até locais de convívio e de reunião da comunidade, espalhados pelos 69 freguesias do Concelho de Guimarães. Fora de Portas (Out of doors) project aims to decentralize cultural consumption, mainly musical, through different formations of Fundação Orquestra Estúdio. Music will travel to community meeting places spread over the 69 parishes of Guimarães county.

Tudo está lá como nas grandes obras de música, nas grandes sinfonias: sub-repticiamente, insinuado nos ritmos, nos jogos de palavras, nos fôlegos de pensamento, no humor, no contraste dos andamentos... E a precisão, agudeza e, tantas vezes crueza, com que Camões formula a “viagem” fazem parte da nossa memória coletiva, e a obrigatoriedade da sua leitura provoca em cada um de nós fascínio e ódio, em que ninguém pode dizer verdadeiramente que não conhece os Lusíadas, mas que quase ninguém conhece verdadeiramente. Antecipando a apresentação integral da obra, a 9 de junho, no âmbito dos Festivais Gil Vicente, António Fonseca estará entre nós desenvolvendo um conjunto de ações com a população, nomeadamente a preparação, com famílias vimaranenses, da apresentação de dia 9, mas também a apresentação, em espaços disseminados pelo concelho, da sua própria e muito especial antologia desta obra maior da literatura portuguesa.
Everything is there as in the great works of music, the great symphonies: surreptitiously crept into the rhythms, the wordplay, the breaths of thought, the mood, the contrast of tempos... And the accuracy, sharpness, and often crudely with which Camões makes the “journey” part of our collective memory, and its mandatory reading causes in each of us fascination and hate, due to which no one can truly say that doesn’t know the Lusíadas, but that almost no one really knows it. Anticipating a full presentation of the work on June 9th, within the Gil Vicente Festivals, António Fonseca will be among us developing a set of actions with the population, including the preparation, with families from Guimarães, of the presentation of the 9th of June, but also the presentation, in different county spaces’, of its own and very special anthology of this major work of the portuguese literature.

Guitarrista de If Lucy Fell, Asneira e I Had Plans, Rui Carvalho editou, no verão do ano passado, o seu primeiro disco a solo com a assinatura Filho da Mãe. “Palácio” é composto por 11 temas onde a guitarra acústica ganha grande protagonismo.

The program of Animation Film at Guimarães 2012 – in a pioneer festival entitled Guimanima – was born out of a proposition designed by the young Cultural Association Extrapolar. A capital Europeia da cultura persegue desta forma a intenção de, criando novas oportunidades de programação artística e cultural, em articulação com organizações que operam na região, não só enriquecer a oferta cultural em áreas consideradas estratégicas – e o cinema é uma delas – como convocar práticas e serviços que reforcem as competências disponíveis no território. São reconhecidos no seu país pelo seu trabalho experimental, apreciado e galardoado pelo mundo inteiro. Paul e Menno de Nooijer, da Holanda, têm corrido mundo com os seus diferentes trabalhos e com as performances que levam a cabo. Três diferentes sessões: duas com exibição de obras e outra com uma performance executada. O pano de fundo são obras cinematográficas executadas por pai e filho que sempre trabalharam em conjunto. Born in Paris in 1961, the composer Alexandre Desplat is an extraordinary case of creative versatility and also of the brilliant rise in the international cinema scene. Regular contributor of Jacques Audiard, for example, in Read My Lips (2001) and in The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), his soundtracks in the production of english language has earned him four nominations for the Oscars: The Queen (2006) , the Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), the Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and the King’s Speech (2010). In 2011, he signed song titles such as Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, George Clooney’s In the Ides of March, and Roman Polanski’s Carnage. Among his last works is included Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, opening film of Cannes Film Festival this year.

Tempos Cruzados (Crossed Times) is a program developed by Guimarães’ associative movement whose mission is the value of the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills of the local community, strengthening its cultural and social legitimacy. The program defines itself as a cultural management planning project, multi-level areas of knowledge, incorporating concepts and contents of History, Arts, Geography, Urban Planning, among others.

PROJECTO | FIND LAB Ideias Urbanas é um projeto desenvolvido pelo OPO Lab que se inicia com a abertura em Guimarães do espaço FInD Lab (Fabrication Innovation & Development), um laboratório de Fabricação Digital munido dos mais recentes meios de concepção e fabrico assistido por computador que proporcionará cruzamentos multidisciplinares entre cultura e tecnologia. Fundamentado em premissas de inovação, formação e investigação, o seu programa educativo irá ser desenvolvido com um conjunto de Workshops, visitas e Open Days, ambicionando ser um espaço de dialogo entre os diferentes atores da região potenciando sinergias entre a universidade, escolas, criativos, industria e população. Este será o espaço que irá receber entre estas actividades as Residências FInD Lab – local de trabalho para profissionais e estudantes de diferentes áreas criativas que ambicionam investigar e materializar propostas na área da fabricação digital explorando assim novas formas e processos de concepção.
Ideias Urbanas is a project developed by the OPO Lab that begins with the opening of FIND Lab space (Fabrication Innovation & Development), a Digital Fabrication laboratory equipped with the latest conception and fabrication computer-aided means that will allow multidisciplinary intersections between culture and technology. Based on assumptions of innovation, training and research, its educational program will be developed with a set of workshops, visits and Open Days, aiming to be a space for dialogue between different region actors leveraging synergies between universities, schools, creative, industry and population. This place will receive among these activities, the FIND Lab Residences - workplace for professionals and students from different creative areas that aim to investigate and realize proposals in the area of digital manufacturing exploring, this way, new conception forms and processes.

O momento inicial do Laboratório de Curadoria problematiza a exposição enquanto espetáculo cenográfico, performático e sensorial. The opening moment of the Curators’ Lab analyses the exhibition as a staged, performing and sensorial spectacle.
O Sonores propõe um programa multidisciplinar tendo como tópico concetual o questionamento crítico e artístico da noção de “som”, incluindo tempos de reflexão e de diálogo, de crítica e de análises, de aprendizagem e de colaborações, de intervenções no espaço público, juntamente com uma programação de performances artísticas e musicais. O epicentro do evento será uma estação de rádio que, além de um espaço de emissão, se apresentará como um espaço de mediação com o público, espaço pedagógico e de realização de workshops e ateliês informais de produção, palco pontual para performances.

“Maybe Rise” tem como objectivo principal a construção de um espaço sonoro composto por dois elementos em contradição – uma localização utópica harmoniosa e indeterminada e um lugar de ação altamente simbólico.
Artista multidisciplinar e influenciada por uma miscigenação da cultura francesa com a portuguesa, Magali Sanheira apresenta um trabalho ritmado por uma doçura fria que desenvolve um questionamento das normas sociais e familiares.
“Maybe Rise” has as main objective to construct a sound space of two contradicting elements –an utopic harmonious location and a highly symbolic place of action.
Multidisciplinary artist, influenced by a specific miscegenation of french and portuguese cultures, Magali Sanheira presents a work punctuated by a cold sweetness which evolves a questioning about social and familiar standards.
Sonores proposes a multidisciplinary program having as conceptual topic the critical and artistic questioning of the notion of “sound”, including time for reflection and dialogue, critic and analysis, learning and collaboration, interventions in the public space, along with a program of artistic and musical performances. The epicenter of the event will be a radio station that more than being a broadcast space, will be a mediation space with the public, educational, workshops and production ateliers’ space and ponctual stage for performances. Esta performance recria um sistema de percepção do som semelhante ao protótipo de uma sonda, centrando-se na extracção de qualidades sonoras resultantes da variação de ressonâncias e da complexidade das vibrações existentes no espaço.
This workshop aims to meditate about the notions of collective, group and individual within a community. The fundamental nucleus of this work will be the non-verbal expression, the mute word, the inconspicuous and non heard word.
This performance simulates a sound perception system with the configuration of a probe, focusing on the extraction of sonic properties resulting from resonance variations and the complexity of vibrations existing in space.

O CASTELO EM 3 ATOS Projeto multifacetado comissariado por Paulo Cunha e Silva, que utiliza a ideia de Castelo como poderosa metáfora que agarra as grandes questões contemporâneas. Pertinentemente, o Castelo é também o símbolo mais forte de Guimarães. Por isso, permite, simultaneamente, não escamotear uma realidade da cidade e serve de pretexto para introduzir os temas que agitam o nosso tempo. A multifaceted project curated by Paulo Cunha e Silva, who uses the idea of the Castle as a powerful metaphor that grabs major contemporary issues. Pertinently, the castle is also the most potent symbol of Guimarães. So it allows both to reveal a reality of the city and to serve as a pretext for introducing the themes that stir our time.

O Castelo é assim passado e futuro, raiz e utopia, origem e destino, fortaleza e palácio, unidade e diversidade. No imaginário nacional, o Castelo de Guimarães corresponde ao mito da origem, pelo menos da origem da nacionalidade. Questionar todas estas flutuações num momento em que Guimarães é Capital Europeia da Cultura e o destino da Europa se encontra mais aberto e indefinido do que nunca, é não só oportuno como indispensável. O projeto utilizará vários dispositivos visuais e semânticos, para explorar o problema que enunciamos, encomendados especificamente para o efeito: Artes Visuais, Cinema, Literatura, Arquitetura, Design, Cozinha e naturalmente Pensamento através de duas grandes Conferências Internacionais sobre “O Futuro da Europa” e sobre “O Futuro do Mundo numa Europa sem Futuro (à vista)”. Como a designação sugere O Castelo em 3 Atos desenrolar-se-á em 3 momentos distintos (até novembro de 2012).
The Castle is thus past and future, utopia and root, origin and destiny, fortress and palace, unity and diversity. In the national imagination, the Castle of Guimarães corresponds to the myth of origin, at least the origin of nationality. Questioning all these fluctuations at a time when Guimarães is the European Capital of Culture and when the fate of Europe is more open and undefined than ever, is not only desirable but indispensable. The project will use various visual and semantic devices, to explore the problem we have set out, specially commissioned for this purpose: Visual Arts, Cinema, Literature, Architecture, Design, Cuisine and of course Thought in two large international conferences on “The Future of Europe” and “The Future of the World in a Europe Without a (foreseable) Future”. Ao longo dos séculos, os Anjos povoaram imaginários e decoraram espaços, ora através de um mundo profundamente católico, ora em reminiscências de uma mitologia clássica, ora descontextualizados pela dessacralização das Luzes. Sem esquecer as suas perspetivas teológica, humanista e mística, apresentamos as quatro grandes fases da sua representação: o Anjo Justiceiro do período medieval; o Anjo Humanista do Renascimento; o Anjo Barroco, do Luxo e Decoração; e o Anjo Protector da Idade Contemporânea.
Over the centuries, the Angels inhabited imaginary spaces and decorated spaces, whether through a profoundly catholic world, whether in reminiscences of the classical mythology, whether decontextualized by the desecration of Lights. Not forgetting their theological, humanist and mystic perspectives, we present the four major phases of their representation: the Punisher Angel medieval period, the Angel of the Humanist Renaissance, the Baroque Angel of Luxury and Decoration, the Protector Angel of the Contemporary Age.

This a reflection proposal on the territory of the county of Guimarães from an approach that involves four foreign photographers, assuming that there are still, in the geographical distance, cultural reasons and specific sensitivities able to produce other readings and contradict the homogenizing effect of globalization.

“Collecting Collections and Concepts” questiona os modos de exposição tradicionais e a articulação concetual subjacente ao ato de colecionar, acumular e arquivar objetos e obras de arte, contemplando a utilização de obras que integram diversas coleções institucionais portuguesas.

“Collecting Collections and Concepts”, questions the traditional ways of exhibiting and the conceptual underlying joint of the act of collecting, accumulating and storing objects and works of art, contemplating the use of works that integrate several institutional portuguese collections.

Oficinas da Imagem é um projeto que lançou às escolas do concelho de Guimarães o desafio de explorar o OLHAR, O LUGAR e o CORPO, atravessando o primeiro ciclo de exposições patentes no âmbito da programação da Capital Europeia da Cultura, que constituem maioritariamente uma reflexão sobre o lugar, a paisagem, a cidade, o território. Os serões decorrem sempre em casas rústicas, onde o público é acolhido num ambiente familiar. Developed around the oral tradition, the project Stories of the Beginning of the World, is held in various parishes of the county, under the guidance of Antonio Fontinha that is accompanied by different storytellers. Em 2011, realizou-se pela primeira vez Artes e Comunidades – Encontros, seminário destinado à reflexão sobre as práticas artísticas com e para a comunidade. O caderno resultante destes Encontros será publicamente apresentado em conjunto com o livro “Dançar é Crescer”, de Paula Varanda. A apresentação dos dois volumes será pretexto para uma conversa com intervenientes em ambos os projetos, na perspetiva da relevância do trabalho de documentação para a consolidação das pontes entre práticas artísticas e pedagógicas. In 2011, Arts and Communities – Meetings, seminar to reflect on the art practices with and to the community first took place. The notebook that resulted from these Meetings will be publicly presented together with the book “Dançar é Crescer”. The presentation of the two volumes will be the pretext for a chat with actors on both projects, in the perspective of the relevance of the documentation work for the consolidation of the bridges between artistic and pedagogical practices. Através deste workshop procura-se escrever a partir dos objetos, corpos, sonhos, acidentes de percurso, para criar uma história rica em ditos e não ditos, para libertar e domesticar a intuição e fazer surgir o autor selvagem que existe em cada um de nós.
Maria Manuela Lopes proposes in this creation and formation lab for young people, an approach to new media, exploring the boundaries between art, science and technology through recurrent themes in their own practice as authorial consciousness, memory and identity.
Through this workshop we seek to write from the objects, bodies, dreams, missteps, in order to create a rich history of spoken and unspoken, to free and tame intuition and bring out the wild author that exists in each one of us .
