R e s e t / R e s to r e MSc 1 / 2 s t u d i o The design studio Reset/Restore investigates new possibilities for a quintessential relic of post-war housing in the Netherlands: the Bijlmerflat Kleiburg. Every large European city exhibits examples of large scale post-war housing estates. Many of these have been designed according to then-prevalent modern visions of the housing neighborhood of the future. Living, working, leisure and traffic were often radically separated. As a result, huge structures for dwelling and infrastructure are situated within large scale green areas or leisurescapes. Now more then 50 years old, many of these estates suffer immense problems. Not only are the buildings technically defunct, also the needs of the inhabitants have changed drastically. Many projects are awaiting the wrecking ball. However, from the viewpoint of cultural history, society and even sustainability, demolition is problematic. When housing corporation Rochdale announced it would demolish Kleiburg, several institutions protested strongly. It was argued that the building is an important part of the cityscape and that it is to be valued as a symbol of its underlying social ideals. On the other hand, it would cost Rochdale millions to reuse Kleiburg, money it could invest more safely somewhere else. Reset/Restore sets out to develop new strategies that reach further than renovation of what is already there, or consolidation from a purely cultural vantage point. By making use of the existing building, new possibilities for this mastodon will be extensively explored.

The third level is the enclave. In some areas the high rises interacts with the low rises that surrounds the bijlmer area. This creates urban enclaves protected by the high rise and which create a filter between the urban and the green areas,

We understand the park as a virgin and wild green area that should be used for leisure and green energy production. we erase most of the original paths in the park and just create a network of straight paths for pedestrians and bicycles. And we create a system of leisure facilities underneath the metroline connected by a walkway.
We can then say that the general idea is how the high rises (Kleiburg in our case) answers to their context. We contextualize the high rise. Not only interacting with the surroundings but also generating different ways of living. From the most urban and active apartment or student house to the most self sustainable, natural and experimental way of living in the park.
There may be various ways of improving the Bijlmermeer. It is a fact that it does not work as it was expected. It may be the monotonous and massive concrete buildings, the huge and unequiped green areas, the lack of facilities... We first tried to understand How the area works in urban ways. We just realized that the Bijlmer does not work as it was intended first. It has no more the sistemacity that had in his origin. Nowadays it has 'context'; in some ways the alterations that had been done during the last 30 years have improved the potencial of the original High rise. The Bijlmer is not anymore high rise in the park. Then we analized the potencial of the horizontal main streets on both sides of the Area. In this streets is focused most of the activity of the neighbourhood (Shopping center, metro stations, religious buildings, markets...) So we can say that the High rises in some ways are hanging from this streets. Then a logical idea would be to densify this streets. Give more people and more activity to this areas. By densifying the areas close to the street we also define a diference in the homogenous green space. The spaces close to the street are nomore green areas but activity spaces where you can find different facilities. Then, the green area gets condensed, contracted. It is also logical that if we densify the border of this green areas the are more likely to work better. So we can state that the global idea is a logical secuence from the most urban and densify street to the most wild and free green park. This secuence can be divided in 4 different levels. The first level would be the urban street. We build new medium rise buildings Which not only provides us more density but shops and local
business spots, integrated car park underneath these buildings and more close and active urban spaces (street). The second level would be the square. Is usually the big squares next to the street. We place there the main facilities like theatres, daycare center, communitary centers... This is also an interaction point for the people living in the high rise. The third level is the enclave. By demolishing all the other flats, it has also been demolished the structure of the designed urban space. The remaining buildings of the Bijlmer Museum are just a sad fragment of the originary plan

NEW C ONNECTIONS The lack of recognizable streets and pathways is one of the biggest problem in the Bijlmer. Straight paths to specific destinations will bring more clarity. The new pathways will also connect the different parts of the bijlmermuseum, which are now like islands in the sea
