01 Eindhoven Eight, NL Exhibiting Architecture 2016 - 2017
Eindhoven Eight is an investigation into Eindhoven’s contemporary architectural culture through the means of exhibition. Beyond surveying the current state of new architecture in Eindhoven, this exhibition further intends to think differently on the way architecture is exhibited, whilst engaging both architectural insiders and the general public. The chosen eight offices represent the new breed of architecture studio emerging in Eindhoven. Eindhoven Eight proved to be succesfull exhibition design which was displayed and viewed by large audiences in Plaza Vertigo, TU Eindhoven (June 2016), Dutch Design Week 2016 (October 2016) and Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam (May 2017). The basic concept for the layout is a two-dimensional matrix in which the x-axis is used to arrange the eight offices and the y-axis to group the chosen projects into six distinct themes. This arrangement results in a grid of eight by six: in which the 24 projects are placed corresponding to office and theme (occupying 50% of the grid.) The design concept for the exhibition is an arrangement of ‘tables’ and ‘portals’ within the grid, resembling an urban spatial environment. Each project will be assigned to either a portal or table depending on the requirements of the displayed material. The configuration consists of timber members placed in tight succession, creating both the structural requirement of the displays as well as the space on which the material is displayed. The space between the timber members allows differing ways to engage with light and visual sightlines, through and into the exhibition.

graphic identity The logo consists of the city branding logo of Eindhoven in combination with the number 8 and follows the same rhythm as the city logo to create a coherent and easy to remember logo.
promo posters The poster (2953 x 5906) had a rectangular dimension which enabled to be differentiated and also be hung on boards with not too much space. It aimed to promote the lunch talks, the opening of the exhibition and the Day of Architecture.
publicity material The key images from the exhibited offices were used in flyers to spread the awareness about the exhibition. This also encouraged those attending the exhibition to engage with these exhibited designs.

Beyond surveying the current state of new architecture and urbanism in Eindhoven, this exhibition also aims to question the way architecture is exhibited, whilst engaging both architectural insiders and the general public. Eindhoven Eight was curated and developed in the context of a master’s course at TU Eindhoven, but goes further by shaping itself outside the boundaries of the institution.

Influenced by the particular context of a city that is redefining itself through design and technology, these eight practices are exploring new ways to create, collaborate, and realize architecture and urbanism. They engage architecture and urbanism at different scales, at different moments, with different tools, and different goals; blurring any traditional boundaries.
space Eindhoven Eight intends to examine the essential elements through which the various practices converge and diverge, effectively redefining what architecture and urbanism are today in Eindhoven.
space
Eindhoven Eight is an exhibition investigating Eindhoven’s contemporary architectural culture through the work of eight young practices. The exhibition presents a new breed of architects and urbanists emerging in Eindhoven, as the eight studios represent the broad array of approaches developing in the city.
Combined, their work indicates a recalibration of the idea of architecture, one that is wider and more inclusive, where the problem of context, scale, and detail are inextricably linked to abstraction, communication and orchestration. Whilst the resulting work takes on a wide array of forms, shapes and spaces, it still shares certain material and conceptual affinities. This suggests the development of new productive methods and spatial sensibilities in Eindhoven’s architecture and urbanism, here organized around the themes; drive, client, idea, space, place and craft.

ABOUT THE EXIBITION
e-vites & flyers The e-vites were made as a GIF file of changing images on the left handside, while the information about the opening night was static on the right hand side. The e-vite was also used on the larger digital screens to promote the event along with e-mail marketing. The two-sided flyer had information about the exhibition, the plan as well as the names and projects of the exhibited architecture offices. It was folded in the style of a map to make it pocket size.
We are pleased to invite you to the official opening reception of

exhibition labels The main goal of the exhibition labels was to achieve a clear explanation of the projects. These were printed and glued to cardboards of the same dimensions to create a sturdy label which would then be attached to the side of the portal or the table. The visual style of yellow and black was also kept to the labels, allowing them to be clearly visible for the visitors.

Landmarks Venray
Observation Tower Lommel
Europan11
Maud Nieraeth-Van Banning & Bram Hurkens 2009-2010, Venray
The Landmarks Venray project is comprised of six finely crafted objects being placed around the renewed city centre of Venray. Their purpose is to create a place to sit and experience the surroundings, whilst also lighting up the streets at night. The bases are made of white granite, which grounds and solidifies the landmarks to the street. The perforated Corten-steel upper sections signify the qualities of precision and craftsmanship within the local context. At night the landmarks are illuminated from within, appearing as welcoming lanterns. Names of the streets cut into the Corten-steel are lit up in various colours. 1 5

For the municipality of Lommel, Ateliereen designed a thirty-meter high observation tower in co-operation with the Belgian architecture studio MaMu Architects. The Lommelse Sahara area is characterized by sand dunes and surrounded by pine trees. The tower connects to its context through its façade, drawing inspiration from the wavy lines of sand dunes. The steel structure is wrapped with over three and a half kilometers of flexible rope, which creates playful lines like the gentle undulations of the nearby dunes. The efficient triangular form of the structure ensures that the shape of the tower changes from different perspectives and responds to the surrounding environment.

For the Copenhagen Europan11 competition, Ateliereen submitted an original scheme rethinking the urban density of the city. Taking the basic notion of the courtyard apartment scheme, and then completely disassembling it into the singular building blocks, they were able to generate a unique and playful arrangement. The stacked cubic form contrasts with the rigidity of the surrounding structures, with the arrangement only being dictated by light and views. Connecting the spaces via bicycle and footpaths that are raised above road level generates free flowing movement around the site.
