Parent to Parent
Now I don’t like hard-boiled eggs, and neither does my husband. So when our older kids were little, we just bought plastic eggs with which to hold egg hunts with our kids. With a piece of candy or some change inside each, that approach served us well for several years.
When I was a kid, my family would decorate Easter eggs by hard-boiling them, and then using one of those PAAS kits or a food coloring and vinegar mixture to add the color. We’d have a few eggs that were a single color, several that were two colors – one on each half, and then we might have two or three where we overlapped the two colors, creating a stripe down the middle. And that’s as fancy as it got.
Then a few years ago, my oldest son, David, announced that he was going to paint Easter eggs. With my background, I of course assumed that in addition to eggs, we would need food coloring or a kit, just like my family had done. And since three of my four kids do like hard-boiled eggs, I was fine with that. I bought the supplies and told him to have a good time. It turns out that I know nothing about the art of decorating Easter eggs! David waited until a Saturday when the rest of the family was doing something and he stayed behind. When we arrived home, there were no hard-boiled eggs, but there was a bowl of uncooked scrambled eggs in the fridge (actually, they may have been on the kitchen counter, but at least he didn’t throw them away) and paint supplies all over the counter.
had blown the eggs out of the shells and then painstakingly created some of the cutest egg shells I’ve ever seen. There was a Buzz Lightyear and Woody, R2D2, and even one inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I think it took a little longer than he had anticipated, because he did let his younger brother and sisters decorate some of the remaining eggs as well. So we got a few single-colored eggs out of the exercise, but the coloring was still done with paintbrushes, not cups and spoons. This year, my youngest, Haylee, is excited about decorating eggs, and thanks to her older brother’s influence, she also does not believe that decorating eggs involves food coloring or vinegar. She wants David to help her, and she is planning an entire lineup of Winnie the Pooh characters. It sounds too complicated for me, but I’m sure between the two of them, they can get it done, and it will be adorable. Until next time,
David’s eggs were definitely not intended to be eaten, nor were they intended to be used in an egg hunt. He

5 Earth Day Activities
A p ri l FU N FACTS
Over 5 million
Peeps Marshmallow Chicks are made each day at the Peeps factory in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Peeps candies have been the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy in the United States for more than a decade – even more popular than jelly beans. Peeps are sometimes jokingly described as the “indestructible” candy; however, most kids can devour them in seconds!
Every year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. Here are five simple ways to make this Earth Day a family affair. 1. Start a Compost Bin: Composting makes use of kitchen and garden scraps to create black gold, nutrients for the plants in your garden. 2. C heck Your Footprint: The Earth Day Network site has a Footprint Calculator that will show you how your lifestyle affects the environment. 3. G et Back in the Kitchen: By hitting the drive-through less often, you can reduce the amount of packaging material you contribute to landfills. 4. P lant a Seed: Planting a garden is one of the best ways to share the Earth with your children. 5. Volunteer: When you lend a hand on Earth Day, you help your neighbors and teach your children that becoming involved is worth one of your most precious gifts—your time.
Easter is considered one of the oldest and most joyous days on the Christian calendar. Also known as Resurrection Sunday or Pascha, the festival of redemption, Easter is the day Christians celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. Easter Sunday is also typically the most wellattended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

Tuesday, 4/18 1861 was the first year the U.S. income tax was levied upon the American people. President Abraham Lincoln signed into law this revenue raising method to help the federal government pay for the expenses of the Civil War. Tax Day this year is April 18th, the last day on which tax returns can be mailed to avoid penalties. So mark your calendars and make sure to mail your return out on time to avoid some tax battles of your own.

1. Stop saying how tired you are. If you’re always complaining about how tired you are, your kids will think you see your job as a mom as drudgery.
2. Smile at your kids. Try this: Look at your child and smile. Keep smiling. If they ask you what you’re smiling about, say, “It just makes me happy to be your mom.” SUNSHINE IS HERE! Let Flowers Say It All… Happy Birthday To You, Thanks For Caring, Feel Better Soon… Sometimes All It Takes Is A Bloom. We deliver them to St. Petersburg, FL or nationwide.
3. Laugh! Find the humor in life. I noticed something as I was putting my children to bed last night. They were extra affectionate with me. I wasn’t surprised because I had made a conscious effort to be joyful throughout the evening. Instead of being the command-shouting, clock-watching, “you do this now,” mom, I chose to communicate with them in a less harsh manner. I made up my mind to leave a trail of joy. When you walk into the room do your kids smile or cringe? When you leave the room do they sigh or applaud? We’re kind of kidding here, but what kind of trail do you leave behind during the day? Even though every moment can’t be sunny and fun, do try to be a joyful mom as much as you can. Here’s some mom advice on how to start!

If you tend to be fascinated by bad news or sad stories, don’t always share the grim and unfortunate things of life with your kids. Look for joy and laugh when you find it.
4. THC. As we rush, rush, rush through our day, we can forget the simple joys of THC –tickling, hugging and cuddling our kids.
5. Don’t snap at your kids. If you have something to say, say it in the nicest way you can and in a tone of voice that doesn’t come across as an impatient outburst.
6. Don’t rush your kids. Going through the day telling your kids to “Hurry! Let’s go! Do it now!” leaves a trail of tension, not joy.

The Final Four Fundamentals Dads Need “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.” – Tim Duncan Spring is when filling out a tournament bracket makes the to-do list. It’s when for a few weeks Thursday and Friday become personal leave days across offices all over America. Most people love the NCAA tournament and for good reason. Few sporting events offer such a large collection of diverse teams with a shot at making history. The storylines are compelling and the drama is nail-biting. It’s become a great American tradition. So in the same spirit, we as dads could use the month to work on our family/marriage game as hard as the athletes work on their basketball game. Let’s hone our skills and practice our moves to become championship ready men, parents, and husbands. To be always striving, learning, working, and yearning to be better until your better is best. That is the type of attitude that creates great things in all that we do. Let’s work on the final four fundamentals of fatherhood so we can lead our families to the victories of joy, strength, and enduring prosperity. Here’s a basketball related look at how we can achieve our goals.
The 3-Pointer
much emphasis on the risk and ignore fundamentals seldom win it all, but they can make a lot of noise. It’s prudent to have a 3-point shot in your dad arsenal, but don’t rely on big risk/big reward to guide the future of your family. For example, let’s say we have been offered a job promotion that is going to pay us a substantial amount more than we currently make. Yet, we are living comfortable at the moment and our family is happy. Do we take the risk with the chance that our entire family structure could crumble under different circumstances or do we fire the ball inside for a more reliable shot? Always measure personal success against its effect on the family, and use keen wisdom as to when to launch that bomb from the arc.
The Free Throw
How many times do we see great players missing this most simple of shots? These players that lack consistency and reliability in the fundamentals. That’s exactly what life does to a man that tries to cut corners and doesn’t put in the work necessary to be rock solid at the mundane and routine. At the free throw line is where a championship game is often won or lost. Can you be the man that when he is standing there with everything on the line for his family he hits nothing but net? Swish. It takes relentless repetition and a willing heart.
In basketball, the 3-point shot is a risk that comes with big reward if executed efficiently. Teams that put too
Zone Defense
Offense and beautiful shots are rarely what makes a great champion. It’s what he does when the glory is not his to be had that makes the difference. Does he work on both ends of the court? In dadness, zone defense is being the guy under control when life has gone crazy and being the stop gap between it and his family. When his wife is stressed out, his teen is going down a wrong path, and his adolescent is confused and asking hard questions, he doesn’t get overwhelmed and run over. He wisely spreads out a defensive net and gets his team the ball back.
The Slam Dunk
The slam dunk is basketball’s most spectacular moment. It’s what all players dream of. Soaring through the air with the ball firmly in hand and slamming it down with extreme authority through the goal. How did he arrive at that moment? All of the hard work and countless hours of practice. The dedication to his craft that he put before all else. A dad that goes about being a man, parent, and husband, in the same way, will also soar through the air with authority. Put in the work!

3 TIMES I HAD
SELF-DOUBT AND HOW I
OVERCAME IT DUNGY DIARIES
Self-doubt is normal, especially when you experience new situations. The most confident people still have their moments, while with others, self-doubt can be so overwhelming it can paralyze the person. I was fortunate to have parents who instilled confidence in us that we could accomplish anything with God’s help. Even with that kind of foundation of love and encouragement, it can still be difficult when facing unknown challenges. This has been the case with my life. These are the 3 biggest times I was confronted with overcoming self-doubt.
When I Went To College
As a freshman in college, I thought I was a good athlete and student, but I questioned myself. I wondered how it was actually going to be. Will I be able to live up to the success of those who came before me or will I fall short?
When I Went Into The NFL
Then I went undrafted to the talented Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. Self-doubt crept into my head again. The same thoughts I had in college came flooding back. Can I even make this team? Would I be good enough?

Fifteen years later I received an opportunity in a new position as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I had the thoughts: Is this going to work? Am I going to be able to do it? Do I have the right formula? Those thoughts only intensified after we lost our first five games.
Two things helped me overcome my self-doubt. Focusing On What Is In My Control
The first was advice my mom gave. She told me not to worry about the things I couldn’t control. Just focus on the things I could control, work on those, and do my best. She encouraged me that if I did those things I would be fine. In times of self-doubt, I have always remembered to focus on her advice.
Depending on God
The second is depending on the Lord. Anytime I face self-doubt I spend a lot of time in prayer and no matter what happens I place my trust in Him. Those two things have helped me overcome self-doubt.

Summer Camp
Survival Guide by Sarah Cole, Glazer Children’s Museum
Ah spring, when the sun shines and a parent’s mind turns to thoughts of…summer break! If you are like many parents, you’re already planning summer activities for your youngsters, which might include summer camp. Here are some things to consider if you are planning summer camp experiences for kids.
OVERNIGHT CAMPS
When most people think of camp, they think of the sleepaway model, where campers bunk up with friends and tell stories around a bonfire. However, don’t be limited to the classic nature camp as Overnight Camps come in all shapes and sizes, from survival style camps, to overnight arts and computer camps. How do you know if your child is ready for an overnight camp? • In general, children around age 8 are ready for an overnight camp experience. • Is he comfortable staying the night away from home? Do a few test runs – such as a weekend at a friend’s house – just to be safe. • Is she self sufficient? Does she get ready for bed and get ready in the morning by herself? • Consider the location of the camp. A camp you have in mind but which is farther away may sound amazing, but for the first few times, a camp closer to home may be a safer option.
DAY CAMPS AND COMMUTER CAMPS
For those who want a great camp experience for their child but without the stress or parameters of the overnight, commuter camps and day camps are great options and are becoming the new standard of Summer Camp. These camps will range from a few hours to an entire day, but your child will be home for dinner! Commuter Camps generally take children to a camp location, where they spend the day in activities, whereas Day Camps are held at a variety of locations, from schools and

churches to YMCAs and museums or cultural centers. Day Camps typically offer a range of themes and activities, appealing to a much broader range of interests and abilities. These are a particularly ideal choice for younger campers. If you are thinking about sending your preschooler to camp for the first time, consider the following: • Has he had experience in a formal classroom (church school, day care, etc)? • Has she spent an extended period of time away from you? • Is he toilet trained? (Many camps will not allow children in diapers to attend.) • Try a few days or a week to test things out. If you are unsure if your child will be okay on her own, it may be wise to only sign up for a short stint at first. Many Day Camps offer half days for younger campers. Camp experiences are a great part of childhood! They provide educational, social and active experiences that help kids grow and mature, connecting them to each other and the world around them. Check out local camps at area museums, parks and schools for great offerings around Tampa Bay (for a list of camps, check out our Summer camp directory in this issue). www.gulfcoastfamily.org

This Summer
BE OUR GUEST Some of my favorite memories as a child are from springtime, that time of year when kids can run free and break off the constraints of being stuck in the house all winter. There really is something wonderful about looking around and seeing the first bloom of spring or the smiles on people’s faces as they bask in the glow of the spring sun. Spring is all about new life. In fact, all aspects of our lives could benefit from a little spring fever—that renewed energy and optimism that brings us out of the blahs of winter into the glories of spring.
PUT OUR CAMPS TO THE TEST
Here are 6 ideas for spring fever family fun.
1 Family Bubbles
Get everyone, and we mean everyone—Mom, Dad, teenagers, and little kids—armed with bubbles. Give everyone their own bottle of bubbles and head outdoors for a bubble war.
2 Balloon Battle
The preparation for this one is a riot on its own. As you’re filling up your water balloons, you’ll likely have many that will pop. It will just add to the fun. Once you have a basket full of filled balloons, let the battle begin. If it is too cold for water, fill the balloons with air and head to the basement to swat them around.
3 Outdoor Fun
If the weather is warm enough where you live, head outside. We have 15 backyard family games to keep you busy. Visit www.imom.com/15-backyard-game-instructions to print out the cards for the 15 Fun Backyard Games and place them in a hat. Let your children draw a card and head to the great outdoors to get the fun started.
4 Food Adventure
Mix in a little learning with a little snacking. Teach your child about different kinds of fruits and veggies that they normally don’t eat. First, see if you and your kids even recognize some of these! Then have them choose one new food to try.

5 Game Time
If it’s rainy out, head indoors and have a game day. Let each child choose a game and set the timer for 20 minutes. When the timer goes off, the game is over and you move onto the next one. See which of these board games your family might enjoy. Here are some fun board games that will get your whole family laughing and learning together: Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Cootie, What’s Gnu?, Monopoly Junior, Tip It!, Trouble, Monopoly, Life, Imaginiff…, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Pictionary, Taboo, Scattergories, Cranium, Guesstures, and Mad Gab.
6 Pedal and Picnic
Ride your bikes to a picnic spot and enjoy your goodies under the spring sky. Pack a Frisbee® and a ball to play with while you’re there. Make a special treat like homemade whoopee pies for a fun picnic surprise.

A couple of years ago, an adoptive mother voiced her struggle with post adoption services and pulled at the heartstrings of our agency. She exposed a need in our community that was underrepresented. There is a long standing belief that on the day of adoption, all of their children’s ‘issues’ would disappear. While most children find comfort in knowing they’re in their forever home, working towards healing from their past truly begins after adoption. As a result of this mother’s plea, Camelot Community Care obtained state funding in order to serve pre and post adoptive families; who have either adopted from Hillsborough County or are currently living in Hillsborough County. The main goals of the program are to connect adoptive families to one another for peer support, link families to community resources, provide adoption competent counseling, and support families from the beginning through the many years post adoption. Our support groups encourage 20 • April 2017
the whole family to attend; the parents meet in one room with an experienced adoptive family leader. The children meet with program staff who engage in fun activities focusing on social skills, self-esteem building, anxiety reduction, anger management and peer interactions. A mantra of the program is to connect with families, from the beginning of the adoption process, in order to give them the tools to overcome the ups and downs of parenting children from difficult pasts. Our team is made up of three very dedicated women who have extensive experience in the adoption and foster care realms. We are called to do this work so that families don’t have to struggle in isolation. So come see what we are about; join us at the support group closest to you, give us a call or shoot us an email! We would love to hear from you.

Destination: Dinner with the
Hungry Family
Tom+Chee
Best. Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Ever. The Hungry Family voted, and Tom+Chee wins, hands down. When you’re a big family who loves good food, it’s often difficult to find a great restaurant with a setting that’s still family-friendly. Tom+Chee is a venue that makes it easy to enjoy a night out, even with the whole crew in tow. The restaurant was originally created in Cincinnati as a food truck, however the restaurant chain has grown exponen-

tially after exposure on the show “Shark Tank” and many other food shows since. Walking into the restaurant, we were greeted by large, brightly-colored menus printed on the walls and a bright yellow and red color scheme. There were infographics printed on many of the walls, describing the story of Tom+Chee and welcoming us into the restaurant. Deciding what to order was a challenge at first, as Tom+Chee has a menu of almost two dozen gourmet grilled-cheese
sandwiches to choose from, including a BLT with cheddar; one with bacon, blue cheese and mozzarella; Italian and Hot and Spicy varieties; and four meatless sandwiches, plus an entire build-yourown section. Gluten-free bread and vegan cheeses are also available, along with several amazing fresh salads. A Lil’ Grillas Meal is available for kids, with a small grilled cheese, small soup and small drink. Ordering was done at the counter, with food delivered to tables. The food was

quick to arrive and looked absolutely fantastic. The food was enticing and well above what we expected. However, appearances only matter so much, and the only real way to judge the food was to dig in. Dig in we did and boy was the food wonderful. Grilled to perfection and filled with flavor.

The first sandwich we tried was the Crunchy Garlic Chicken, which is a whopping creation, whose contents were spilling out. Piled between perfectly grilled and buttered wheat bread were tender roasted chicken, pepper jack cheese, grilled onion, diced tomato, parmesan-garlic potato chips, garlic seasoning and a sweet-hot mustard that gave the sandwich its winning taste.
Tom+Chee 6802 22nd Ave N St. Petersburg, FL 33710 (727) 317-4790 www.tomandchee.com
The second grilled-cheese sandwich we tried was called the Flying Pig, whose abundant fillings were roast turkey, smoked gouda, bacon and zesty dill pickle slices on crisp white bread. It was the favorite of all the boys. We also tried the Grilled Mac+Chee, the Swiss+Shroom, and the Bacon+Blue— all which were plenty good as well.
After tasting their famous Grilled Donuts, we all had to agree with the sign on the menu that says, “This will change your life.”
As for the side, we opted to buck tradition and try the non-tomato soup of the day, Cream of Mushroom which was recommended enthusiastically by the friendly girl at the counter. We also tried the Mac & Chee. Both were amazing, however the Mac & Chee was a tremendous hit with everyone. We enjoyed it so much, we had to order second-helpings.
Tom+Chee delivers great value, great food and great atmosphere! We enjoyed our meal together. Enjoyed talking to the people sitting around us. Enjoyed hearing about the restaurant chain from the owner. And most importantly we enjoyed a good time eating as a family. This Hungry Family will definitely be coming back for more!
And what could be better than to finish a good meal with dessert? How there was room I will never know—but we shared several desserts so that we could recommend them to you with a big thumbs up! The strawberry lemonade grilled cheese doughnut, which contained strawberries, candied lemon, mozzarella and lemon mascarpone between two halves of a doughnut, satisfied us instantly. The dessert sandwich not only looked fantastic, but tasted sensational. We also tried the S’More grilled doughnut, which contains chocolate pieces, graham crackers, and marshmallow mascarpone, and was devoured by the kiddos in a matter of seconds.

Reading is an adventure that begins early inbya child’s life. Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan St. Petersburg Parents play a key role in helping their child become a life-long reader by instilling the joy of reading at an early age. Educational experts recommend that parents spend at least one hour per week — or 10 to 15 minutes a day — reading with children long before school starts. Reading skills and habits develop young, so it’s important for parents to encourage their children’s love of reading. PRE-K READING: INTRODUCING THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF READING Pre-K children eagerly soak up information about the world around them. (Don’t you just love watching your child’s eyes light up when his or her curiosity is sparked?) Have you noticed that books, new words and “once upon-a-times” are capturing your child’s imagination?
This is the perfect time to bring words to life with pre-K reading activities. Use a multi-sensory approach to introduce your child to the wonderful world of stories, sounds and letters. Try a variety of reading activities so your child gets to see, hear, touch and move around — a truly engaging approach to learning to read. Read stories aloud and act them out. Or, pick a storybook character and pretend that character is coming to dinner. As you read a favorite book to your child point to the words as you say them — encouraging her to recognize that words have meaning. To motivate and inspire your soon-tobe-reader, give supportive feedback and lots of fun books to choose from.
KINDERGARTEN: CREATING A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR READING Reading aloud continues to be important with Kindergarten children, as it helps them to develop language skills. Encouraging discussion with a child also contributes to language development and can help with reading too. Nurture your kindergarteners reading behaviors by helping your child relate read-aloud stories to events in her life. Subscribe to a magazine for your child to learn about topics that interest him and have fun making cookies together — using the recipe to demonstrate the need for reading and math.
Don’t forget to read outside the home as well there are many opportunities to read to your child — and have him read back to you — as you’re running errands, attending events, or dining out. Parents can also take advantage of reading opportunities on the Internet. For example, Book Adventure is a free, interactive, reading motivation program created by Sylvan Learning and found online at www.BookAdventure.com. For additional tips on instilling the joy of reading and making learning a fun family endeavor, visit the “Parent Resources” area of www.SylvanLearning.com. YEARS LATER, ADOPTION HAS ADULT WONDERING ABOUT BIRTH MOTHER
Q: I was adopted as I child. I can’t help wondering—why did my mom give me up? Why would any mom put her child up for adoption? I’ve been aware of the situation since I was small, and on the whole I’m very happy with my life, but I can’t get away from nagging thoughts and doubts about my birth mother; like, didn’t she care enough about me to raise me herself? How can I process these feelings? Jim: It’s easy to understand why you’re continuing to struggle with these kinds of questions. Almost every adopted child goes through the same experience. You need to understand that under certain circumstances it can be very difficult—even impossible—for a woman to bring up a child. Perhaps your birth father was not living at the time. Maybe he had gone away and left your mother alone. In either case, she may not have had enough money to provide for you, or she might have been in ill health. There might have been any number of reasons why your birth mother chose adoption, and felt it best to be out of the picture. It’s especially difficult if there’s little or no way to find out anything about her background, heritage or circumstances. Obviously, we aren’t in a position to know the facts. But there is one thing I do know: Your birth mother must have loved you very much—enough to give you life and make sure you were raised in a loving home where you would be well cared for. She made
Jim: One writer called grandparenting the greatest job on earth, handed to you wrapped in a blanket. But staying in touch can take a lot more work these days. Families used to reside in the same community for generations, but not anymore—and of course, situations like the one you described have always been tough. Here are a few ideas:
a courageous choice. Maybe someday you’ll find the answers to your questions. But for now, hang on to that. If you’d like to discuss your feelings at greater length, our counselors would be happy to help. Call 1-800-232-6459 or visit FocusOnTheFamily.com.
First, if your grandkids are old enough to be involved in social media, join them. Send emails, exchange text messages and friend them on Facebook. These can be some of the best connection tools available. Second, embrace technology. It’s easy to video-call over the internet. This gives you and your grandkids a good way to bridge the miles and “see” each other. Ask questions about their friends, school and sports activities. You might even want to take notes, so you’ll know what to talk about the next time you call.
TECHNOLOGY MAKES GRANDPARENTING ACROSS THE MILES MUCH EASIER Q: Our son is in the military, and he’s now stationed overseas with his family. We realize that for the next few years we won’t see our grandchildren in person as often as we’re accustomed. We’re going to miss a lot of key moments in their lives. How can we stay connected and engaged with them?

FOCUSING ON YOUR SPOUSE’S VALUE Q: My wife and I don’t argue often, but when we do I sometimes find myself spiraling into negative thoughts about her. Is there a practical way to keep myself from going there? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: My father, the late Gary Smalley, was a renowned relationship expert whose insights have helped millions. But he and my mom, Norma, still had their occasional “moments.” One Thanksgiving, my parents got into a huge argument. They were both so frustrated that they each retreated to different parts of the house. After a few minutes, I followed Dad to his study and found him at his computer. I was surprised to see him reading a document entitled “Why Norma Is So Valuable.” When I asked him about it, he said, “Years ago I started a list of why your mom is valuable. So when I’m upset
with her or when we’ve had a fight, I’ve learned that instead of sitting here thinking about how hurt or frustrated I am, I make myself read through this list.” This amazing document contained hundreds of words and phrases describing my mom’s value. This is the best idea I’ve ever heard of for cherishing your mate. Think about why she is so valuable to you and simply begin to write. For example, you might list character traits, gender differences, talents, personal values, parenting skills, personality characteristics, physical traits, the roles she plays that you appreciate, honorable ways in which she treats you and so on.

OUR INSECURITIES CAN HAVE GREAT POWER OVER US Q: I really struggle with insecurity. I feel stuck in destructive patterns and unhealthy relationships. I want to change, but can’t ever seem to gather the courage to break free. What can I do? Jim: Our insecurities are a weakness, but make no mistake: They have great power. In fact, they’re a key reason many people stay trapped in a cycle of dysfunction and misery. Most of our insecurities are simply a nuisance. We may question our attractiveness, drive a car we’re self-conscious about or struggle with public speaking. It’s the kind of stuff that makes us feel awkward at social gatherings, but otherwise, it doesn’t hold much influence over our life. But some people struggle with insecurities that tap into a deep well of fear. It drives their thinking and keeps them stuck in painful situations. It can feel especially overwhelming when the only solution a person knows is willpower. But “white-knuckling” it and simply trying harder is rarely effective. You need outside help.
Some anxieties can be eased with the support and encouragement of friends, who reassure you in times of weakness. But other fears are too deeply entrenched and can only be overcome with professional help. And let’s not ignore the spiritual component. I personally believe that we can never be fully secure until we have a relationship with the Creator who uniquely designed each of us as individuals. With the guiding hand of a qualified counselor, you can not only rebuild your self-image but learn how to replace fear with confidence. Take heart—there is hope for healing. To speak with one of our staff counselors, or to find a therapist in your area, call us at 1-800-232-6459, or visit FocusOnTheFamily.com for more information.
HOW TO GET YOUR TEENS TO OPEN UP Q: I know our two teenagers can be fairly vocal, but I have a hard time getting them to say anything when they get home each day. I’ll ask, “How was school today?” and the best I get is usually an anemic “Fine.” How can I get them to open up? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: If you’d like to open the door of conversation a little wider for your teen—or really, anyone—to walk through, remember these two simple ideas: Ask about something specific, and don’t ask “yes” or “no” questions.
Also, be prepared to engage them, no matter how they respond. If they say, “I hate math,” or, “School is stupid,” don’t dismiss that. Lean in and pursue the topic. Ask them to share what’s on their mind—then listen carefully and patiently. The best way to get others to open up is to connect at the point where life is most real for them. It’s worth noting that we adults often forget (sometimes deliberately) how stressful middle and high school can be. Teens are overloaded with changes happening inside as well as all around them. The school setting can be socially exhausting for some students. They want grace, understanding, a sense of worth and belonging—and unconditional love. Occasionally, your kids may feel like leaving their day in the rearview mirror as much as you might. So be sensitive and allow them space when they need it. The rest of the time, find out what’s important that day and connect with them over it. As you establish a climate of caring concern, you’ll find that they’re more apt to initiate meaningful conversation.
Say something like, “Tell me about that group project you’re doing,” or, “What drills did your coach make you run at practice today?” Questions like these narrow your child’s focus and present the opportunity to offer you actual information.
Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two.

Easter, the Great Love Story by Kenny McNatt I will be the first to admit that given the choice between curling up to watch a Hallmark movie, or watching ESPN, I will choose the latter 99% of the time. But there are those rare moments that I give in to the pressure and watch a romantic comedy with my lovely wife.

There is always a price to pay in order to have something of great value. With that in mind, I think It is safe to say that you have great value to God. He paid the ultimate price for us to have the wonderful opportunity of experiencing something that is often so allusive…peace. This Easter, as you enjoy time with your family, an over abundance of candy and frolicking through the fields in search of eggs, I hope you remember that the greatest love story ever told is the story of God’s love for you.

Angel of Hope
, Pinellas County
Serenity Gardens Memorial Park by Vonnie Schaffer and Melanie Kuklis
After my husband and I lost our son, Michael Ryan Schaffer, we realized that for us, this moment changed our lives forever. As parents, we understand that the loss of a child whether before or after birth affects the entire family, and often a community. When our friend Melanie Kuklis approached me about bringing an Angel of Hope to Pinellas County I knew I wanted to be a part of this journey with her. This memorial is very near and dear to our hearts as it is dedicated to the memory of children who have passed away preceding their parents. The “Angel of Hope” (from the book The Christmas Box, by Richard Paul Evans) serves as a memorial for those healing from the
emotional and physical absence of a child. The original angel statue was commissioned by Evans, in response to reports that parents were seeking out the angel as a place to grieve and heal. This monument was dedicated on December 6, 1994. The Angel of Hope statue provides a peaceful place for grieving parents and relatives to mourn, heal, and remember their beloved child/children who have passed. It also gives parents, family, and friends an opportunity to connect with one another as they visit the memorial. “Angel of Hope” statues have been placed around the world where a vigil is held once a year on December 6th, the day the first monument was dedicated.
If you would like to donate to this campaign visit www.gofundme.com/angelofpinellas-yahoo-com or email angelofpinellas@yahoo.com. To see a video of 100 angel statues: www.vimeo.com/8059288
In order to bring this beautiful memorial to Pinellas County, we created a campaign to raise $14,500, the cost of the statue. Serenity Gardens Memorial Park located at 13401 Indian Rocks Rd, Largo, FL has graciously donated land to display the angel. The goal is to raise money for the angel by June 1, 2017. This would allow the three months it takes to get the angel cast, delivered from Christmas Box International and set up for display. We could
then participate on December 6, 2017 when vigils are held at all 150 angels. Preceding the first vigil, Serenity Gardens Memorial Park will be holding a dedication ceremony. Once the Angel is dedicated, we will send photographs of the finished monument and a detailed map to be included on the Richard Paul Evans website. This lets people from around the world to visit the Angel of Hope Pinellas or join the vigil. Vonnie Schaffer and Melanie Kuklis

Evaluating Entertainment For It’s Message
pluggedin.com
by pluggedin.com
Q: Much of today’s entertainment is created by performers who embrace values and lifestyles with which I strongly disagree. I want to avoid supporting them with my money or exposing my children to their influence. What’s the right thing to do?
A: I think that every entertainment product should be evaluated for its message and not for the personal behavior of the performers and creators. If one eliminates all entertainment based upon the actions of those involved, how far down the list do you go? You might skip a movie over its starring actor, but do you refuse to watch if someone in a scene’s background has made
poor moral choices? What about the men and women behind the cameras? Or those in charge of lighting? The point is, it’s nearly impossible to avoid all entertainment created by anyone with questionable values. A better standard is to let every album, TV series, movie and video game stand or fall on its own moral merits (or lack thereof). Every form of entertainment has a message, intentional or unintentional. When the message is uplifting and inspiring, celebrate it—even if the messenger is flawed (as all of us are). – Bob Waliszewski, Author of Plugged-In Parenting
