pictures of Rodney with some Snapchat filters. After taking one with the baby filter, she texted it to him. Hanna’s goal, of course was to embarrass him. But Rodney doesn’t embarrass easily, and as I mentioned earlier, it didn’t take long for her to realize that she had made a big mistake!

Parent to Parent It didn’t take long for Hanna to realize that she had probably made a big mistake. We were at dinner a few weeks ago, and my husband, Rodney, was goofing around at the table, taking pictures of everyone with his phone. He is known for being “click-happy” whenever he has a camera in his hand, so we’re all pretty used to it.

Rodney immediately wanted to know how she had done that. She showed him, and he downloaded the app onto his own phone, and has been a menace with the snapchat filters ever since! I don’t think he’s actually sent a single message through the app, but not one of us can get through a day anymore without at least one picture being taken of us with a deformed face, puppy ears and tongue, a ridiculous hat/glasses/ wig, or well, you get the idea. And if we all weren’t annoyed enough after two and a half weeks of that, a few days ago, Rodney stepped it up another notch by figuring out that Snapchat also has videos that will change his voice (and ours, of course). One morning, he created five or six videos, and sent them out via

But Hanna decided that he was annoying her, and she wanted to get a little revenge. So she pulled out her own phone and started taking

π=3.141592653589...

Each year on March 14th at 1:59 pm many math and science classrooms around the world break from their usual routines to observe the festivities of “Pi Day”. Pi Day commemorates the first few digits of one of the oldest know constants, 3.14159…. and it also happens to coincide with Albert Einstein’s birthday - which makes it a doubly cool day for math enthusiasts.

Whether or not you’re a math enthusiest, you’ll enjoy celebrating this irrational holiday and whatever you do, don’t be afraid to express your inner geek!

St. Patrick’s Day, which is observed on the 17th of March by people around the world, is a day to celebrate the life of St. Patrick and the culture of Ireland. The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737, when it was publicly celebrated in Boston. Even if your family has not a wee smidgen of Irish heritage, it’s great fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by donning your green.

Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield Massachusetts. Known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss, Geisel wrote and published almost 50 childrens books. At the time of his death on September 24, 1991, some 200 million copies of his books had found their way into homes and hearts around the world. On the 2nd of March, in honor of Dr. Seuss, the NEA is sponsoring “Read Across America,” a program that focuses on motivating children to read. So whether you like to eat green eggs and ham or not, this March take time out to read with a child.

Leave this world with

Memories, not Dreams! Better together! Don’t do life (or Travel) alone!

I’ve had the great privilege to visit some of the most beautiful places on Earth, take part in THRILLING adventures both on land and at sea, as well as be pampered and spoiled at relaxing resorts without a care in the world; and, of course, I get to spend lots of time at one of my favorite places, Walt Disney World®. But some of my favorite memories are the ones I’ve had while travelling with friends and family! I believe we were created to live in community with others, and one of the ways I love “doing life” together, is by taking trips together! There’s just something special about getting away together and experiencing new things, having extended time to talk, laugh, and enjoy being around those close to you without all of the distractions of everyday life! I have made so many lifelong friendships with people who we’ve taken cruises with, and It’s amazing how even a few days away together can strengthen friendships and family relationships! I recently joined 41 of our friends on a group cruise to the Caribbean! It was

so much fun sailing together, seeing each other around the ship and/or at dinner, and exploring new destinations together! All of us came back closer and with lasting memories together! I was then able to join a local church for their Marriage cruise. It was such an awesome time to be away from distractions, for couples to have the chance to focus on each other. We had fun both as a group and as individual couples/families, starting off the morning with some practical teaching about marriage relationships, then enjoying the day however we wanted to, and getting back together with everyone for dinner! What an amazing way to spend a weekend! As a travel agent, one of my specialties is Group Trips! I have helped with setting up family reunions, Graduation cruises, I’ve been able to help churches book mission trips and tours to Israel. I also have experience with setting up a simple Girl’s (or Guy’s) Weekend trip or a school overnight field trip! A “group” can be almost anything from a family reunion to a church or school group, youth or adult choirs or performance-oriented groups, mission

trips or common interest groups such as a book club or theater enthusiasts. A group can also be a company outing or professional development opportunity. Did you know you can earn CEU’s or improve your professional skills through Conferences at sea! Group benefits start at just 5 rooms for many cruises and resorts, and can be substantial!

When booking groups the benefits may include: Discounted pricing, Dedicated meeting space, Extra perks and/or amenities, Onboard or Resort spending credit, Reserved dining for the entire group together (if desired), and many more! When I help you put a group together, I will handle all the details so you can focus on your group, and whatever the purpose is for your time together! Enjoy getting away with friends, families, or your team without having to worry about any of the trip details. I am here to help with that and would love to help you set up your next group trip, wherever it may be!

Truck / Tractor-Trailer / 18-Wheeler Accidents

by Chris Reynolds

Many tractor-trailer accidents are avoidable when the trucking company and its drivers take the proper precautions. A recent investigation conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (“FMCSA”) found that 87 percent of the truck crashes were due to driver negligence. Due to the extreme weight of these trucks, there are many rules and regulations that

truck drivers must follow to keep the roadways safe. One of these rules is that a truck driver may only drive for a maximum 11 continuous hours in a 14 hour work day, and then they must rest for 10 continuous hours before driving again. Also, drivers must possess a special driver’s license to drive a big truck, and must pass a physical examination every two years. Finally, drivers must keep a log book that details all of the driving they do. Of course, there are other rules, but these rules are the ones that often become relevant in negligence actions when truck drivers cause injuries. A commercial truck accident is usually more complicated than other automobile accidents. This is generally due to the big size of the truck, the

cargo carried in the truck, or the multiple defendants that may be involved. There are usually multiple possible defendants in a truck accident case, including the trucking company, the contractors, the drivers, the owner of the trailer, the owner of the truck and the company that owns the cargo. Due to the complexity of trucking accidents, it is very important to ensure there is a

detailed investigation by the attorney. There are many types of evidence that can be crucial later on in the case, including the driver logbooks, the training procedures of the trucking company, the maintenance of the truck, and other factors. However, this evidence is often lost or destroyed over time, so it is imperative that the gathering of evidence begins as soon as possible after the accident. If you or a loved one has sustained injury in a trucking accident, please contact an experienced personal injury attorney to discuss your particular situation.

Loving the Middle School Years Parenting a middle schooler brings new challenges and new rewards. These years are bursting with emotional and physical changes that can sometimes put distance between the parent and child. At this stage of childhood your middle schooler is grappling with questions about themselves, the world, and God. The intensity and suddenness of this stage can easily put distance between you and your child. Understanding what your middle schooler needs from you now, can help you stay ahead of the game. With the right mind-set and tools, this stage can be rewarding and precious for both of you.

Middle schoolers need you. A strong, positive parent-child relationship is extremely important while navigating the middle school years. This relationship requires an open line of communication, trust, and a warm, loving, and supportive connection. Having open communication does not mean a permissive acceptance or belief that you must be their friend for them to talk with you about important issues. You are the parent. Setting boundaries and expectations coupled with love and encouragement, creates for children a sense of security that gives

by Dr. Kira Wilson, Director, Covenant Academy

them a safe place to communicate. Even though at times they may resist you, they want you and they need you, to be the parent.

Middle schoolers need to know you are listening. When conflicts arise or an important topic needs to be discussed, begin with a question and listen. Avoid accusatory statements and rhetorical questions like, “What were you thinking?” that can result in defensive and argumentative responses. Making unjust assumptions about your middle schooler’s motives or behavior can cause frustration and create barriers in communication. Help your child to see the end of their decision, by leading them with questions. As a middle school child struggles with self-identity, they look to everyone for acceptance. In this pursuit, peers become increasingly important. While they care what others think, they keep their own thoughts to themselves. Face to face conversation can be difficult. For this reason, they tend to be more open at bedtime, on a walk or in the car when they can share their feelings and avoid your facial reaction. Make the most of these times.

Have shorter more frequent conversations rather than long ones, which are perceived as a lecture. Do not make the conversation about you or use it to manipulate a desired response. Do more listening than talking. Give them your undivided attention. Put the phone and the to-do list aside. Be present. Be authentic.

Middle schoolers need your patience. Middle schoolers (especially boys) are often impulsive. They do not think through the consequence of their actions. When we misinterpret this behavior as intended foolishness or defiance, we can overreact and respond harshly. Impulsive behavior, while the bane of adolescence, is not the same as defiance. It’s important to make a distinction between childish behavior and willful disobedience before you react so as not to crush the relationship.

Middle schoolers need to be respected.

means affirming their feelings and giving them a voice. Showing respect means avoiding sarcasm and constant rebuke. Long term criticism can lead to discouragement and even despair. Avoid correcting in public. Even speaking negatively about your child to others, can create a wedge between you. Discipline and correction should always be done in private. This helps to build trust in the relationship, which your child needs, to be open and honest with you.

Middle schoolers need to be loved. Above all things, your middle schooler needs to know you love them. Discover ways you can best express love to your child. They need to know you are for them and not against them. Not every child receives the message of love in the same way. For some it is words, for others it is your time and presence, and for still others it may be help and encouragement. This is a crucial time in a child’s life. While they may seemingly push you away, they need you more than ever.

Respect for your middle schoolers means listening and thoughtfully considering what they have to say. It Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County. With more than 30 years in Christian education, her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a love for God. She cherishes family time with her husband of 38 years, three children, and two grandchildren.

Running With the

Angels A by Jodi Stoner

I guess you could call me a ‘runner.’ A typical year includes more than 1500 miles and I love to race... all over the country. It started in my mid 30’s when a friend asked me to join her in a half marathon that just happened to be on her birthday. I reluctantly agreed and it changed my life forever. Like I mentioned, I like to travel and race. So, a group of friends and I were going to hit the strip and RUN.... The Las Vegas Marathon 2014! I had a little countdown going on facebook. The days were drawing near when someone commented on my post: “Hey, we’re going to Vegas too and we would like to meet you.” The message was from a man named “Rooster.” A marine with the last name Rossiter, so “Rooster” was an easy fit. He was the President of an organization called, “Ainsley’s Angels of America.” Made me think because I remember wanting to join them months prior to this but couldn’t because Florida didn’t have a chapter. The closest chapter to me was Alabama. They are a cool group of runners that raise aware-

Ainsley’s Angels of America ness for “inclusion.” They believed everyone should be included… in every aspect of life, but focus on endurance events like marathons and triathlons. I did a little research and found out the name “Ainsley” is Rooster’s daughter. An exceptional needs child who felt the wind in her hair on her first ride in a “freedom chair” and had never looked back. The Rossiter family felt Ainsley’s joy and wanted to share it with the world, so they did. The following day, I was sent a private message from Rooster asking me to run with the Angels… an invitation to earn my angel wings, to push a child. An overwhelming wave traveled over me. I still don’t know if it was excitement or fear. So many emotions… worry, nervousness, questions… I mean, I’ve never done anything like that.

Florida garage filled with Florida Freedom Chairs. Florida now has a chapter (a family). Ainsley’s Angels in Florida was born two months after I earned my Angel Wings in Vegas. We now have one year behind us. We’ve participated and shared the message of inclusion at more than 20 Florida race events. We even hosted our very own half marathon! We’ve raised funds to purchase freedom chairs and we’re saving for a trailer as we have outgrown my husband’s work van for transportation. Our Florida family is 170 strong and growing! “Together We Shall” is not just a way of life for us, it’s a movement.

Who would I push? Would I have some help? I’ve never trained for something like this! Before I could answer, Rooster asked me to pray about it and get back with him. That was just the nudge I needed. I knew where my prayers would lead me and I said, “yes.” Three days later I was in Bright Light City meeting my Angel Rider Shamus and his daddy, Angel Shaun. Shaun and I pushed Shamus 26.2 glorious miles. We crossed the finish line on a brightly lit Vegas Strip. I could barely see the finish line through the tears. I hold that day, those days, that entire memory close to me as I stand in my Join us! Runners, Riders, Cheerleaders, Guardian Angels… everyone is welcome! For more information, check out our Florida website, message me or “friend me” on facebook. My name is Jodi Stoner but my friends call me “Run Jodi.” www.ainsleysangels.org/ambassadors/florida/

My family needs staycation ideas, because like most of us, my husband and I only get so much vacation time a year. So this Spring Break, we’ll be spending most of our children’s break from school right here in town. Thankfully, with a little creativity – and help from iMOM! – you can come up with fun things we can do without leaving home. And the best part is that they’re not expensive or complicated. See what you think of these 10 super staycation ideas.

1 Visit a nature center, or wildlife rescue or refuge center.

2 Camp out: You can do this at a campsite in your own area. Or, you can even have a camp out in your backyard. Don’t want to head outside, check out our website imom.com for some fun indoor campouts!

3 Sign up for a workshop or activity you can do as a family. Look into cooking lessons, tennis lessons or walking tours.

4 Let your kids choose their dream destination and then go there – without leaving home. Decorate a room in the style of that country or city. Watch a movie shot on location. Eat the food of that locale. Try to learn a bit of the language.

5 If you have friends who are also taking

staycations, see about trading houses with them for the weekend.

6 Enlist the help of grandparents and other

relatives. Let your children spend a few days away from home, and see if you can join them on the weekend.

7 Join a country club or community pool. Some

clubs in smaller cities offer membership for as little as $50 a month. Consider it an investment in keeping your kids active this summer. Call around to see if you can find “summer only” specials.

8 Take the train. Many railway carriers offer short trips of an hour or two. Pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery with your kids.

9 If you have a beach, lake or river nearby, check the paper or Internet for bargains on rentals. Since fewer people are traveling this summer, you might be able to get a great deal.

10 Visit a local art museum with your kids.

Once they’ve seen the paintings, sculpture, photography, and other creative works, give them some drawing paper, some modeling clay or a camera, and let them recreate their own favorites at home. Then create a gallery in your family room featuring their finished works of art.

And, even though you won’t be getting far away, sometimes just a change of scenery is all the boost you need. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

TRIPS TANK For this month’s Trip-on-a-Tank our family had the opportunity to visit the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament in Kissimmee, FL. On this family adventure we were able to travel through the mists of time to a forgotten age of devotion, courage and love and were able to experience the pageantry and excitement that would have been ours as guests of the queen ten centuries ago. Not only did we get to see an electrifying show featuring heroic knights on spirited horses displaying the astounding athletic feats and thrilling swordplay, but we also were able to enjoy a “hands-on” feast as the dynamic performance unfolded before us. From the moment we entered the castle and were greeted at the ticketing booth to the moment we left the Medieval Times Museum at the close of the evening, we were

taken care of by staff dressed in medieval costume speaking in old English. It was quite impressive that no matter how ridiculous our kids questions were, not one ever broke character throughout the evening! After we left the ticketing booth, we were handed our cheering banner and paper crowns, and bid entrance to the castle grounds. As soon as we entered the castle grounds, there was a lot to see and do before the show actually began. We shopped for souvenirs, toured the Medieval Museum, met the Royal Falconer and her falcon, snapped a photo with the Queen, checked in on the horses and enjoyed socializing with many of the serfs, wenches and knights! In the Hall of Arms, there was a spectacular array of Medieval weaponry as well as dozens of different coats of arms for many prestigious families. It was a great spot for photos and it was exhilarating to view and admire all the elaborate Medieval décor. Another fun experience

Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper

was something they called the knighting ceremony. For an additional cost, the Queen will “knight” your child or a loved one in front of everyone - putting them in a cape, and then during the show the Royal Court will make a birthday, wedding, graduation announcement during the show. Finally it was time to enter the arena. As the festivities began, trumpeters herald all the Queen’s guests into the Grand Ceremonial Arena where we were seated in one of the six color-coded sections corresponding to the colors of one of the daring Knights. We were seated in the red section and cheered on our Red Knight throughout the show. After the opening, we were able to witness intricate battles with authentic weaponry and enhanced armor, which grabbed everyone’s attention from the moment we sat down. While enjoying the show all the Queen’s guests were treated to a utensil-free feast. The menu included tomato bisque, focaccia bread, oven roasted chicken, corn on the cob, herb-basted potato split into quarters, dessert, beverages and coffee. Serfs attended

to our every need and the meal was quite delicious and is rightly called a “feast.” The show itself was really fun and full of energy. We watched jousting as well as lots of great horsemanship. The costumes were really intricate and the knights did a great job of interacting with the audience. Kids waved their flags and cheered on their knight and the knights even threw out carnations to the audience. There was also a part in the show where a falcon flew right over our heads several times!

Our Medieval Times show experience was truly an evening to remember. If you’re looking to make a large group of people happy (and I have to admit I think it was SO much fun being there with a large group) and can’t decide between a dinner and a show, why not do it all?! The Medieval Times Dinner Theater was a great way for our family to make memories that will definitely last a lifetime.

After the main meal was coming to an end, the show really began to ramp up! The Knights put on a spectacular display of equestrian skills and Medieval pageantry and the arena was filled with

the knights stand up to defend the Queen’s honor. The final portion of the show was an electrifying display of swordplay and combat. The musical score which played in the background help to provide a fabulous backdrop for the battles and really helped to draw all of the guests into the story. In the end, the Green knight was defeated and Queen’s kingdom was protected!

In his free time, Jacob likes to go to the beach, watch Power Rangers and read books, especially, anything Dr. Seuss related! Jacob is known for his sweet tooth. His favorite foods are cake and brownies. Jacob’s favorite super hero is Superman because he thinks everyone should do the right thing. His favorite animals are zebras, sharks and giraffes. In a perfect world, Jacob would like everyone to be nice and pick up their trash and no bullies please! Jacob’s ideal family would go camping, watch sports and be adventurous!

Yaromie wants to serve her country as a Marine someday. But for now, Yaromie is happiest when she gets to hang out with her friends, as well as watch movies, like her favorite, Captain Underpants. She also loves going to the mall, mostly to look at shoes, especially if they are Converse. Yaromie also loves the colors red and black, the TV show Catfish, and Fetty Wap. At school, her favorite subjects are reading, math and history. If you’re serving pizza or tacos, Yaromie is there, but she will pass on sandwiches. Yaromie’s ideal family will have parents who like to spend time together as a family – playing Monopoly on rainy days or going to the park or beach when it’s sunny out. Siblings would be a bonus!

“Oh, mom’s on her phone, she’ll ask me to wait if I go up to her.” If we have a strong relationship with our children, they’ll feel more comfortable coming to us and want to come to us. So be available.

4 WAYS

Spend time with your kids when both of you are off your screens. Make the golden hours times of real connection—in the morning, after school, and at bedtime.

TO GET YOUR KIDS TO

TURN TO YOU,

by Susan Merrill www.susanme.com www.imom.com When your children have questions about life, where do they turn for answers? Google? Alexa? Friends? Or you? Our kids have more access to information than ever before. They’ve grown up with the Internet, social media, and now Alexa and they have access all day. And they may be more comfortable or trust online advice more than they do talking to you! This realization became a reality for me when an 11-year-old girl emailed us here at iMOM. She was concerned about her parent’s marriage. She searched online and found an iMOM article, “Is This the Root Cause of Your Marriage Problems?” She thought it would help her mother and emailed us about it. She apologized that she was only 11 (but almost 12) and asked us if we would send the information to her mother.

What fascinated me was that she took the initiative to research on her mother’s behalf but didn’t go to her mother directly. Are we losing our connection with our kids? Do they feel more comfortable reaching out to strangers in the “box” than their own family? Technology can be so amazingly helpful; however, it is not relational. Your child is growing up surrounded by technology. If you want to stay more connected to your child than their devices you are going to have to work at it. Here’s how to get your kids to turn to you instead:

1. Stay connected.

It all starts here. If we have a strong relationship with our children, they’ll feel more comfortable coming to us and want to come to us. So be available. When your kids are around, try to put your screen away because it’s just one more barrier they have to get through to reach you. They might think to themselves,

Cornerstone

If we have a strong relationship with our children, they’ll feel more comfortable coming to us and want to come to us. So be available. Your kids might want to ask you how to make friends, what to do if you’re shy, or when should a teenager have sex. But if they feel awkward asking, they will ask Google instead. Start conversations about touchy topics casually and regularly. When your kids do ask you questions, avoid saying things like, “Why do you want to know that? You should know that! You’re too young to know.” Use our conversation printables (www.imom.com) or our Q & U app to make questions fun.

Give your kids options for where to turn—you, a grandparent, a teacher, books. Or, the next time they zoom to their computer or Alexa to get an answer, playfully say, “Freeze!” Then, ask them how you two can find the answer without going to the Internet.

4. Show them how to question.

Tell your kids that everything they find online isn’t necessarily true. Explain to them that most of what’s written online is someone’s opinion, or an attempt to prompt them to take action like buying something or clicking on a link. Show them how to find legitimate sites. This is especially important when it comes to sex. Pornography and even non-porn articles about sex and social media posts make certain things seem normal, so kids think that that’s what’s expected. Keep talking about your views and the morals on which you base them. iGen kids often feel like they’re on their own. So hug your iGen children today and tell them they can come to you at any time and with any question they have. Tell them they don’t need

the Internet when they have you—the original iMOM!

I am a hybrid of sorts. I majored in finance but I love people more than numbers. I left behind the corporate gray of banking for the colorful world of kids. I had three children and adopted two more. I am the very imperfect Merrill family manager and the founder of iMOM. I love to analyze life, ponder possibilities, and pray for opportunities, which makes for a very busy and messy house!

Let’s Celebrate Pi Day! by Erin Nobles, Director, Mathnasium of St Petersburg

March 14 is celebrated in math classes around the world as Pi day, but there’s no reason parents can’t get in on the fun! Plan some fun math-centered activities and show your favorite student how math can be silly.

What is Pi?

First things first…in case you haven’t thought about Pi since 10th grade geometry class, Pi is the number you get when you divide the circumference of a circle (the distance around the circle) by its diameter (the distance across). Because Pi is the same for every circle, we can use it to solve for the diameter of a circle, if we know the circle’s circumference, or to solve for the circumference of a circle if we know its diameter. And even though Pi is often written at 3.14, Pi contains an infinite number of digits without a pattern of repetition. As

far as we can tell, it doesn’t matter how long we calculate Pi (even with NASA’s most sophisticated supercomputers), we will never find its end.

Playing with numbers

The curious properties of Pi have fascinated mathematicians for many years, and provide teachers and parents with lots of opportunities for fun. Of course, you can never go wrong with a Pi day pie. Encourage your children to compete to memorize the most digits of Pi and the winner gets the largest slice! Another idea is to show children how to calculate Pi in the real world by having your child measure cylindrical objects with string. Have them cut up the string into three even pieces, and then measure the leftover piece to see how it’s always Pi. Also, there are

many websites devoted to Pi day fun, games, and accessories. For ideas, visit www.piday.org. But even without a computer, parents can encourage children to memorize the first few digits of Pi. Artists can write poetry about Pi (a Pi-ku, perhaps?) or paint a picture of Pi. If you’re feeling sporty, try a Pi-athlon (run or bike 3.14 miles – roughly a 5K).

No longer reserved only for the geek culture, pi is fun, approachable, and entertaining. At Mathnasium we are seeking to promote National Pi Day and the importance of a strong STEAM education. All technology, from the wheel to the Smart Phone, utilizes physical laws that are described in terms of mathematics, and we want to encourage you to enjoy this fun day, which also happens to be the birthday of Albert Einstein!

It’s no joke to make online threats The #ItsNoJoke awareness campaign is aimed at addressing school threats made by students in Florida, as these threats can result in felony charges. The campaign further seeks to educate youth and parents that threats of violence include statements made anywhere online.

Vickie Tarantino, a teacher at Eisenhower Elementary, was selected as Spectrum Bay News 9’s first A+ Teacher of the Year. Tarantino was one of more than 50 teachers honored as A+ Teachers last year, and she was one of seven nominees for A+ Teacher of the Year. Tarantino was nominated by one of her fifth-graders, Bailyn Hagadone. Bailyn and other students said Tarantino has changed their lives and that she goes out her way to help them grow personally as well as academically.

To view the Spectrum Bay News 9 profile on Tarantino visit www.pcsb.org.

Future City is a flexible, cross-curricular educational program that gives students an opportunity to do the things that engineers do—identify problems; brainstorm ideas; design solutions; test, retest and build, and share their results. This process is called the engineering design process. With this at its center, Future City is an engaging way to build students’ 21st-century skills.

The number of Florida youth charged with school threat-related offenses has risen steadily in the last three years. In Fiscal Year 2016-2017, 629 youth were charged with school threat-related offenses, followed by 687 youth in Fiscal Year 2017-2018, and 779 youth in the Fiscal Year 2018-2019. Making threats, even if it is in jest, can have serious consequences. Youth, parents, and teachers are encouraged to report any and all threats they see or hear. Nancy Nickel Local Children’s Book Author

The children’s book, “The Runaway Egg” shares God’s true love story.

We Floridians are surrounded by the created beauty of God. His love bursts through in our gorgeous waters, beaches, landscapes and skies! And His relentless passion for us was fully displayed in His son, Jesus. Long, long ago we chose our own way leading to epic failure for all generations. But Holy God could not let us go. He reached out and made the way back to Him.

Personally, I am a local author who’s lived in Pinellas County for 27 years while raising three kids into adulthood. Over time, through various writing opportunities and working with children and adults, God has continually pressed on my heart the need to communicate Biblical truths in understandable and fun ways.

In “The Runaway Egg,” a special egg escapes from an Easter egg hunt and goes on a wild adventure. We follow the egg on its extraordinary journey and discover the hands that ultimately receive its forever treasure. It’s a message for all ages! I would love to meet you at an upcoming local book signing. The next event is:

Little and Big Kids Alike–

Saturday, March 30th, 11:00 A.M until 1:00 P.M. Barnes & Noble in Sarasota 4010 South Tamiami Trail

Do you ever feel alone? Unloved? Overwhelmed? Confused by circumstances or by information overload?

“The Runaway Egg” is available at BarnesAndNoble.com (and in some stores), Amazon.com, and Christianbook.com.

BOOK SMART BONDING

by Sarah Cole, Glazer Children’s Museum

“One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.” When I think these words, I hear them in my father’s voice. During my childhood, we spent nearly every night working our way through our library of Dr. Seuss stories. Those nights provided me with great memories, and set me on the road to a love of reading and learning. March is the birth month of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. To celebrate his birth, the

National Education Association is promoting the Read Across America program. The goal of Read Across America is to have every child in the country spend time reading with an adult. So, what is it about reading with an adult that is so important? Children who see their parents reading are much more

likely to read for pleasure as they get older. Students who read for pleasure tend to be better readers and writers and to score better on tests. A recent study has shown that children who grow up in homes with many books obtain on average 3 years more schooling than children in homes with few or no books, regardless of parental education level, occupation, or socioeconomic status. The importance of reading goes far beyond school success. Reading with children is an important bonding moment. It says to your child that despite your busy day, you want to take time to focus on him or her for a while. Reading with a child provides a great opportunity for a close snuggle on the couch. Here are some tips to make the most of reading with your kids! 1 Be interactive. Point out pictures, ask questions and encourage your child to ask questions. Questioning during reading helps build reading comprehension and also nurtures curiosity. 2 Learn about each other. Take a trip to the library or a bookstore. Introduce your child to your favorite books, and look for new titles that appeal to your little one. 3 Make it fun! Silly voices, props, puppets and costumes can all make reading extra fun. If your child has a flair for the dramatic, consider putting on a play of favorite books, or allowing him or her to make sound effects. 4 Reading isn’t just for bedtime. For parents who work odd hours, bedtime books aren’t always an option. Try reading over breakfast, or have an older child read aloud to the family during the commute!

with Jim Daly Q: Some friends of ours are talking about possibly adopting a child. Honestly, my wife and I have never thought about doing that. But I’ve heard you’re a big proponent of adoption, and I’m curious as to why. Jim: Let’s do some name-dropping: Babe Ruth. President Gerald Ford. Steve Jobs. Dave Thomas (the founder of Wendy’s). These were all successful people, but they also share the distinct privilege of having been adopted. I spent a year in the foster care system myself, so I know what it means to be an orphan. I also know the stability and nurture a loving adoptive family can provide a child. That’s why I never forget that there are thousands of children across the country and around the world who have the same need for a family to bring them into their home, to love them and to show them their worth. Adopting a child is a serious responsibility, but the rewards are priceless. And

it can make all the difference in the life of a young person in need—literally changing their entire future. Not every adopted child will grow up to be a head-of-state like Nelson Mandela or the founder of a Fortune 500 company like Steve Jobs. But it’s hard to overestimate the lifelong impact that growing up in a loving, adoptive family can have on a child. We all need love, a sense of worth and the security of knowing that we belong. Without the gift of adoption, many children will grow up without those things. For more information about helping an adopted child to thrive—or coming alongside a family that has adopted—visit

PARENTS CONCERNED THAT DAUGHTER HASN’T ACCEPTED THEIR VALUES Q: Our daughter is finishing high school and will soon “leave the nest.” We’re concerned that she doesn’t seem to be enthusiastic about the values we’ve tried to teach her. It’s discouraging to us as parents—but is it too late? Jim: I think all of us, as parents, struggle at some point with this kind of concern. Here’s my advice: Be patient. You’ve planted the seed and watered it. Now comes the tough

part—waiting for it to take root and grow. Let me share a story. A few years back, my family and I were driving through open farmland. My son, Trent, asked, “Hey, Dad, why aren’t the farmers out working?” He was expecting to see tractors and combines rumbling through the dirt, and rows of crops sprouting up along the endless miles of fields. But since the planting season had just ended, the landscape of empty fields didn’t tell the whole story. I explained to my son that before the farmers could harvest a crop, they had to be patient and wait for the seeds they had planted to take root and grow. Parents face much the same challenge, and it’s easy for discouragement to settle in when we don’t immediately see the results we’re hoping for. But, like a farmer, you can’t force a seed to grow. It must be nurtured and given the right nutrients for it to have its best chance of taking root on its own. For a child, that includes patience, firm and healthy boundaries,

solid examples from Mom and Dad, and buckets of praise and love. As a parent, you do what you can while your child is under your roof. I’ll presume that you’ve communicated and hopefully modeled the values you want your daughter to emulate. Now it’s up to her. Her decisions as a budding adult might not always be the ones you’d prefer. But even if that seed seems dormant for now, under the right conditions it can still sprout and grow.

THE POWER OF THE WORDS WE SPEAK Q: I’m getting married soon. My fiancee and I thought it would be good to ask various people—family, friends and experts—for their best marriage tips. What’s your advice?

you down trails you never intended to go. That’s why it’s important to put up strong fences early on in your relationship to guide you in what you should and shouldn’t say to one another.

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: There are many things I could say, but let me go with this: Your chances for a successful marriage increase substantially when you both agree to temper the ways you speak to each other.

One of the most effective boundaries for protecting a relationship is removing talk of divorce from your conversations at all costs. It’s not wise for couples to threaten an end to their marriage as a tactic for getting their way. Every marriage encounters disagreement at times. But if you allow yourself in the heat of an argument to raise the possibility of divorce, it suddenly becomes a “real option.” Instead, make up your minds in advance that, come what may, divorce is absolutely off-limits. It’ll motivate you to find other ways to settle your differences.

Have you ever noticed the power of the words we speak? They can build up and heal our relationships, or they can tear them down and destroy them. Careless words are like runaway horses. Once they’re out in the open, they’ll lead

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THE MISTAKES IN PARENTING Q: How can I deal with my shortcomings as a parent? I love my family dearly and do my best, but I feel like I make a lot of mistakes with my kids.

When imperfection happens, I have learned to ask myself four key questions:

Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Parenting has a way of sometimes highlighting our imperfections. Thankfully, being a good parent doesn’t mean having to be a perfect parent. In fact, true success in parenting is about how you learn from and respond to the mistakes you inevitably will make.

with Jim Daly and understanding for other parents— including my own. Along the way, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to continue learning grace, forgiveness, humility, love and patience through my role as an imperfect dad. Even though we can drive each other nuts sometimes, as a family we’ve also come to understand one another at a very deep level, and that fosters genuine empathy and connection within our home. You can become a better parent by taking advantage of specific parenting tools (like our organization’s 7 Traits of Effective Parenting Assessment, which you can find at FocusOnTheFamily.com/ parenting). Find out where your strengths

lie and maximize those. Learn what your weaknesses are and work to shore those up. And, as should be the case in every area of life, be ready to apologize and repair when needed.

INVESTORS, INFLUENCERS AND ENCOURAGERS Q: My daughter is a great kid, but she doesn’t always see her own value. I believe in her; still, I sometimes have trouble communicating that to her. How can I build my child up? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Who and what we become is generally impacted by many people. Let’s talk about three types of “builders” your child needs: investors, influencers and encouragers. Who are the investors in your daughter’s life? These are people who contribute their time, money, talents and advice. I

had several coaches during my teen years who invested time in me. For example, I was awful at tennis in high school, but one coach believed in me and took time to help me become a better player. I eventually won a tennis scholarship my second year of college, because someone invested in me. How about the positive influencers in your daughter’s life? These are wise life decision-makers your daughter admires and trusts. They teach and model good examples. These may include friends, siblings, teachers, coaches, mentors and, of course, parents. Who are encouragers in your daughter’s life? These individuals’ words propel us forward, reminding us of our value, purpose and direction. (Unfortunately, many of tend to pay more attention to the critics.) When I was in high school, my principal stopped me one day and said, “You’re going to be a great leader someday.” Those were profound fueling words. He may not remember that moment of encouragement, but I’ll never forget it.

I urge you to commit to consistently investing in your daughter, positively influencing and persistently encouraging her along the way. And remind her to not give critics too much “microphone time” in her mind. On a related note, Focus on the Family has developed a suicide prevention resource called Alive to Thrive (alivetothrive. focusonthefamily.com). It’s a free and excellent resource to equip those who invest in, influence and encourage young people. I urge you to use this to help your community move in a healthier direction. Every life is important and precious! Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two.

2020 Plugged In Movie Awards:

And The Award Goes To… by Paul Asay, pluggedin.com

Welcome, welcome everybody. Don’t trip on the red carpet on the way to your seat. You all look very fine indeed, what with those tuxedos/ evening gowns/sweatpants you’ve donned for this very, very special occasion. We’re talking about the Plugged In Movie Awards, of

course. It’s a ceremony far more lavish than the Oscars… or would be, if we had the time and, well, any money at all. Still, as you can see from the footage from the ceremony, we do our best.

pluggedin.com Plugged In’s award-winning website and reviews are designed to shine a light on the world of popular entertainment while giving families the essential tools they need to understand, navigate and impact the culture in which they live.

BEST MOVIE FOR KIDS

BEST MOVIE FOR TEENS

BEST MOVIE FOR ADULTS

BEST CHRISTIAN MOVIE

The Nominees: Abominable; Aladdin; How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World; Klaus; Toy Story 4 Plugged In’s Pick: Toy Story 4 Did we really need another Toy Story movie? I mean, weren’t the first three good enough? Those were, admittedly, questions I was asking when I walked in to review Pixar’s newest film. But Pixar proved that there was another toy story to be told— one that asked some serious questions of its own. Toy Story 4 proved to be both an existentialist rumination and a wildly fun, clean kids’ flick—not an easy combo to pull off. But, to paraphrase Buzz Lightyear, it did it in style.

The Nominees: Avengers: Endgame; Blinded by the Light; Harriet; Little Women; Togo Plugged In’s Pick: Harriet We didn’t overload this category with fourquadrant blockbusters this year as we often do. Even so, the race for the Teens’ title was stacked. Endgame was a fitting climax to a more-than-decade-long saga. Little Women is a Best Picture contender at the Oscars. Blinded by the Light and Togo were great pics in their own right. But in the end, we went with Harriet, the inspirational, faithrich biopic about Harriet Tubman. This wellcrafted film shines a light on someone who deserves it—educating and entertaining its audience at the same time.

The Nominees: 1917; A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood; The Farewell; A Hidden Life; Just Mercy Plugged In’s Pick: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Every year, this is the category that we Plugged In staffers argue over more than any other. Some fought for 1917, the resonant World War I drama, even though it has some pretty difficult content to wade through. Others argued for A Hidden Life, Terence Malick’s beautiful story of faith and principled resistance. But A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a semi-fictionalized snapshot of Mister Rogers, ended up taking the prize. As Plugged In Director Adam Holz said, it’s a rare picture that you walk out of that makes you want to be a better person. And that’s what this film does.

The Nominees: Breakthrough; Jesus is King; Overcomer; The Pilgrim’s Progress; Unplanned Plugged In’s Pick: Unplanned For the first time in the history of the Plugged In Movie Awards, we decided to honor an R-rated film—and oddly, it came in the Christian category. This impactful, harrowing and at times difficult-to-watch drama unpacks one woman’s journey from abortion provider to pro-life advocate. The latest polls suggest that the United States is more accepting of abortion than ever: If more people watched Unplanned, those stats might change.

Your Pick: Aladdin Y’all didn’t like Toy Story 4 as much as we at Plugged In. Perhaps it was the spork. No matter: You gave Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake your highest grade, with the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon saga flapping into second place.

Your Pick: Tie, Avengers: Endgame and Little Women Your choices could not be more different from each other… and yet they’ve got some strange similarities going for them, too. Both feature time-honored, diverse characters that clash with each other at times, but who still care for one another when the chips are down. Both films stress sacrifice, determination and love. Both come with hard-earned happy endings. Only one, though, features a gigantic bedazzled glove that could destroy the universe.

Your Pick: 1917 The British war drama has picked up tons of honors this awards season, so why not add one more? This film is a fascinating blend of an intimate portrait—that of two soldiers making their way through the war’s horrific No Man’s Land—told on a sprawling canvas. It’s really effective as a movie and surprisingly impactful as a story. It shows us that, even in the most deplorable conditions, we can—and must—still try to do the right thing.

Your Pick: Unplanned You were equally moved by this tricky story, with Overcomer sliding into second place. A few folks were wondering why Silence, God’s Not Dead 3 and Do You Believe didn’t make our list of nominees. The answer: Those films weren’t released in 2019.

Wooden on Leadership

by John Wooden

With all the hoopla of the NCAA Basketball tournament going on, we thought it appropriate to share with you some advice from one of the greatest coaches ever. The following excerpt comes from Coach John Wooden and Jay Carty’s book Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. Success is peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

Winning seems so important, but it actually is irrelevant. Having attempted to give our all is what matters—and we are the only ones who really know the truth about our own capabilities and performance. Did we do our best at this point in our life? Did we leave all we had to give on the field, in the classroom, at the office or in the trenches? If we did, then we are a success – at that stage of our life. But being successful at one point doesn’t necessarily make us a success at every point – and it does not mean that we reach the apex. We must learn to give our all in one success after another. Likewise, accomplishing certain goals does not necessarily translate to success.

Goals are wonderful in that they stretch us and help us to reach our potential, but making or missing goals has nothing to do with success.

As I write these words, I am 94 years old. God has given me good health beyond what most people could ever dream to have. I still Competitive Greatness drive my car for short distances. Believe me when I say, none of these factors is part of the criteria. I am not saying I don’t appreciate the blessings that have come my way. I am not saying that at all. But if none of these good things had ever occurred, I would not be any less successful.

When do we know that we have succeeded? When asking ourselves this question, we should forget what others think. They don’t know. We should be more concerned with our character than with our reputation: Our character is what we truly are, while our reputation is merely what others perceive us While many rank Wooden as the greatest coach of the twentieth century he considered to be. As I have often said, having a himself first a teacher. Wooden was married to good reputation doesn’t determine his high school sweetheart, Nell, for fifty-three success. Neither do awards, years. Coach Wooden lived to be 99. Coach accolades or achievements. Wooden passed away on June 4, 2010.

It is not my way to count or list my awards. I know that people still want to hear me speak, and I am honored by their requests. People still want to meet with me – in fact, they come from all over the world. It is a privilege to be able to continue to encourage others. My hectic schedule has probably done much to keep my mind as clear as it is, even though it’s not as sharp as it once was. My family has been around me, too. What a blessing that has been! I am blessed beyond belief – but am I a success?

I can recount the blessings in my life, but blessings aren’t success. The real determining factor is this: Did I make the effort to do my best? That is the only criteria, and I am the only one who knows (well, me and God). Am I a success? I have peace of mind. Well done, my good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:21).

I really wish I had learned more about failure when I was young. I didn’t realize just how often it would rear its ugly head. I saw successful peopleeither in their jobs, in sports, or with their families and didn’t have much appreciation for the hard work and the setbacks that go along with that success.
