Parents, not all tasty recipes are time-consuming. This fast fudge recipe proves it! These peanut butter fudgy footballs can be stirred up in minutes and gobbled up in seconds. This recipe is sure to become a tasty tradition for our family! We hope you enjoy it also — especially whenever you need a quick chocolate treat with a peanut butter twist.
Football Fudge • ¼ cup butter • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder • 1 cup powdered sugar
• 1 teaspoon milk • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter • White gel frosting or melted white chocolate
1. Melt butter in a microwave-safe mixing bowl on high for 30 to 45 seconds. 2. Add the remaining ingredients in order, mixing well after each addition. 3. Scoop out rounded tablespoonfuls onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Shape into ovals and press down slightly. 4. Refrigerate for one hour. Use frosting or melted chocolate to pipe stitching onto footballs.

When Is Your Vehicle Totaled? After a big car crash, one of the initial issues to be resolved is whether or not the insurance company will repair your vehicle or whether the vehicle is a total loss. The first thing to do to determine whether or not a vehicle is a total loss (“totaled”) is to calculate the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle at the time of the loss. The ACV is essentially what your vehicle is worth after deducting any depreciation. Typically, automobiles depreciate around 20% the first year and about 10% for years 2-5. After an accident, an insurance adjuster will inspect the vehicle and appraise the damage to the vehicle and how much it will cost to repair. The adjuster then determines the ACV of the vehicle, which can depend based on geographic location, wear and tear prior to the accident, mileage, etc. Finally, if the cost to repair the vehicle is 80% or greater than the ACV, the vehicle is typically deemed a total loss. Another method is to determine the salvage value of the vehicle (what the vehicle is worth for parts, metal, etc.), and then add that to the cost to repair, and if the total is greater than the ACV, then the vehicle is a total loss.

If your vehicle is deemed a total loss, you will have two choices: (1) take a cash settlement for the ACV of the vehicle, or (2) keep the vehicle, though the amount you get is the ACV minus the salvage value of the vehicle. Of course, in most cases, people choose the cash settlement. For example, if the vehicle has an ACV of $10,000, the cost of repair is $15,000.00, and the salvage value is $500, it doesn’t make much sense to keep the vehicle, so people will usually take the $10,000 cash payment. However, sometimes in lower value vehicles with minor damage, the person might opt to keep the vehicle. For example, if the vehicle is only worth $1,000 and has $850 in damage with a $100 salvage value, the vehicle is technically a total loss though it might only need a new bumper and a few dents fixed, so a person might decide to keep the vehicle and instead of getting the $1000 ACV, they will get $900 after the $100 salvage value is deducted.

That $2,000 gap between the value of the vehicle and the amount you owe is why gap insurance is essential. If you drive off the lot after purchasing a vehicle and a crash causes a total loss, you suddenly owe $12,000 for a vehicle with an ACV of only $10,000, so you will owe $2,000 for a vehicle you no longer have. The auto insurance company is only responsible for the ACV, so that’s why you should purchase gap insurance to protect against this possibility. Typically, if you didn’t put much money down, you might owe more money on your loan than what the vehicle is worth for 6-12 months, so having gap insurance for that period is essential. This process works might seem tedious, but understanding it will hopefully allow you to make an informed decision when dealing with the insurance company after a crash.

Expecting Parents: What Your Pediatrician May Not Tell You Expecting a child can feel overwhelming: There’s a lot to learn in the months before your baby arrives. Your obstetrician and pediatrician are excellent resources for caring for your baby and keeping them healthy, but they may not tell you how to keep your child safe in your home. Parents and caregivers often think preventable tragedies won’t happen to their family, but sadly, accidents can happen to even the most attentive parents and caregivers. In 2018, 33 children in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties died from unsafe sleep, accidental drowning or abusive head trauma (also known as shaken baby syndrome). These deaths are 100 percent preventable. Learn and share these life-saving tips for safe sleep, water safety and safe stress relief.
Safe sleep The safest way for infants to sleep is Alone, on their Backs, and in a Crib. Your infant’s crib mattress should be firm and fit snugly inside the crib’s frame, and a fitted sheet should fit tightly around the mattress. Crib bumpers, stuffed animals, toys, sleep positioners, pillows and blankets increase the risk for suffocation and should remain outside of the crib.
Safe stress relief Surprisingly, parents are most often responsible for causing injury or death from shaking a baby. As stress levels rise, parents and caregivers may shake their baby out of frustration, causing permanent injury or death. The parent or caregiver does not mean to cause abusive head trauma, but they lack the knowledge or skills to cope with a stressful situation. Shaking an infant or young child – even once – can be fatal. Crying is normal for babies – it’s how they communicate. A baby may cry because they are hungry, need a diaper change, are teething, are too hot or too cold, or because they’re simply overtired. Prepare for and prevent situations that might cause your child to cry, and attempt to soothe your baby. Know that it’s okay to take a time out. If a crying child becomes frustrating, leave the child safely on their back in the crib and step out of the room to regroup. Stepping away reduces the chance of stress leading to a dangerous situation.
Check on the child every few minutes to ensure they’re still safe. Make time for yourself by getting a trusted caregiver to watch your baby. Make sure your caregiver also understands it’s ok to put the baby down safely for a few moments if they need a break.
Water safety The best protection against an accidental drowning is supervision. Children can drown in as little as 20 seconds, and without splashing or calling out for help. Designate a “water watcher” who pays close attention while children are near water.
Understand that there are hidden hazards in the home too. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water, which means that a pet’s water bowl, toilets, buckets with water, and bath tubs all pose a threat. Unsafe sleep, abusive head trauma and drowning are the top preventable deaths among babies and young children in the Tampa Bay area. Install door alarms that alert you when your child goes outside your home. Most children who drown in a nearby pond or pool were last seen inside the house, and caregivers thought the children were napping or playing inside. Add pool and yard fences with selfclosing gates and locks, which can keep a crawling or walking child from reaching the water. Check pool fences for tears and damage – like a small tear that a child could fit through – that need to be repaired.
Place your baby’s crib or a bassinet in your room while they are an infant. It offers the same benefits of bonding without the risks. More infants die in adult beds than anywhere else. Infants are 40 times more likely to die in an adult bed than in a crib. They can get stuck in blankets or pillows, and without control of their neck muscles, can lead to suffocation. I’m not a teacher, but I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by them on all sides: both of my parents, both siblings, and their wives, plus a countless list of friends, aunts, uncles and cousins. Education is our family thing (and I’m the oddball for choosing a different career path). What all this exposure to veteran teachers gives me, however, is a unique insider/outsider perspective. Sometimes we lose focus on the fact that the education of our children should be a partnership–a team pursuit wherein parents and teachers are all in for the goal of equipping and nurturing your child to be all God made him to be. When things get tough or a child is struggling, the parent-teacher relationship can become tense. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Our educational system isn’t perfect, but there are countless men and women who have devoted their

I posed this question to a fantastic preschool teacher who taught my oldest back in the day. She said, “I can tell almost immediately when 4K children are placed in my classroom which ones have been read to a great deal since infancy. They’re better students.” Interestingly, I received the same feedback from a high school English teacher. If, despite your best efforts, your child doesn’t love to read alone, keep reading aloud to them throughout childhood.
When I polled my teacher friends, this theme came up over and over. Parents are so concerned with the numbers on the report card (even in grammar school), they can’t bear to let their children take the deduction for a forgotten assignment or deal with the consequences of any failure, no matter how small. They rush to school to deliver the project or practice gear or to argue for a do-over when their student bombs an assignment. This severely inhibits the child’s ability to learn personal responsibility and how to bounce back from a misstep. Kids learn important things when

4. Even honest kids get things wrong sometimes. One seasoned teacher put it to me this way: “I tell my parents that if they’ll believe only about half of what their child says about me, I’ll extend the same courtesy to them.” It’s true; kids get facts mixed up, misunderstand things, and relay information incorrectly sometimes. Rather than getting upset with your teacher too quickly, a phone call or email to ask a few questions might be the better course. After all, your teacher is dismissing a fair number of outlandish and unflattering reports about what mom and dad say/do. If you only knew…

5. Speaking of emails and phone calls… In this age of instant communication, some parents are offended when a voicemail or email doesn’t garner an immediate response. But your child’s teacher has 20+ little faces sitting in front of her all day (many times even through her lunch “break”) who demand her attention and engagement. My teacher friends say that often they need to wait until the planning period or after school to respond to communication in order to give the children the focus and supervision they deserve. If your question or communication is time-sensitive or even an emergency, try calling the office and having the message relayed as such.
6. Remember your field trip manners.
Preschool through 12th Grade on one Beautiful 28-Acre Campus One teacher of younger children expressed frustration with parents who sign up to “chaperone” a class field trip but spend the entire day caring only for his/her own child. Chaperones need to assist and supervise other students, as well, to keep the trip safe and productive for all. Additionally, midway through a museum tour with 20 6-year-olds in tow is not the right time to initiate a conference with the teacher about your child’s performance or needs. Taking children off-campus is a major responsibility (and therefore, a little bit stressful), and your child’s teacher must focus on the task at hand. Schedule a conference for a regular day.
7. Taking the summer off from all learning is a bad idea. Especially in the lower grades (think kindergarten-2nd grade), children are like sponges. They are learning a great deal, particularly in the area of reading and language arts, but they lose skills if they don’t continue to use them. You don’t have to put together a full-on summer homeschool curriculum, but do keep your child reading and engaging with learning a little bit each day during the break. Awareness Month Gold Ribbon Heroes: Why Gold Ribbon Heroes Matter For many children diagnosed with childhood cancer, the prognosis now is significantly better than it was only 40 years ago; in fact, more than 80% of children with cancer will now survive five years and even longer, as compared Gold Ribbon Heroes LRto a fiveyear survival rate of only 58% in the mid-1970s. Yet for the children who are struggling to be one of those 80%, the road is always difficult, often painful, and never straight and narrow. Luckily, these children don’t have to travel the road to survival by themselves. For as strong and as courageous as these children are, they are surrounding by loving, dedicated individuals who every day find the strength, wisdom, and commitment to help cancer’s youngest warriors on their journey, wherever it may lead. These individuals play a critical role in making the lives of children and families impacted by this terrible disease just a little bit easier.
Through the American Childhood Cancer Organization’s Gold Ribbon Hero Program, the ACCO seeks to celebrate as many of these important individuals as it can, to show the world just how important they are in helping and supporting cancer’s youngest and strongest warriors. Anyone can be a Gold Ribbons Hero. A Gold Ribbon Hero may be the child who astounds us with strength and perseverance, a parent who continues to show courage and bravery even when their heart is breaking, a medical practitioner who cares so deeply about each and every patient, or a researcher who continues to persevere in the ongoing search for the next miracle cure. These individuals are an inspiration and a positive example for everyone in the childhood cancer community and beyond.
How Can You Help Raise Awareness This September? Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately ¼ of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and — importantly — to help raise funds for research and family support.

Isaiah is the sweet, quiet type, but once he gets to know you, he opens up. Isaiah is happiest when he’s watching television, especially his favorite show, SpongeBob SquarePants. But he also like watching The Flash, and wishes he had super speed just like him. For fun, Isaiah enjoys playing outside, especially when he gets to play football. In school, Isaiah’s favorite subject is math. There’s nothing Isaiah doesn’t like to eat, but his favorite food is pepperoni pizza. Isaiah’s other favorites include the color orange, dogs, and the rapper Drake. Being a good person is what Isaiah likes most about himself. Sensible Tips for Helping Children with Homework
1. SET GOALS
One of the biggest lessons for parents of school-age children is learning how to handle homework, and how best to help their children meet academic challenges. Sometimes, parents think helping their child complete homework, or even doing their child’s homework for him, will help him achieve better grades in school. Often, it’s just the opposite, creating a situation where children have not learned the concepts they are later tested on in the classroom.
2. KNOW YOUR CHILD
Instead, parents should create a homework environment that is conducive to their child efficiently tackling school tasks. At Sylvan Learning we recommend the following tips to help parents develop a homework plan for back-to-school success:
Help your child set attainable goals for each class and help her identify what will need to be done to reach each goal. For example, to get an A in American History she will need to turn in all her homework, participate in class, etc. Because each child is special, with different learning styles and academic needs, it’s important to personalize the learning process. Children learn in at least eight different ways, according to the Multiple Intelligences Theory: visually, verbally, physically, mathematically, musically, naturalistically, through group activity or through quiet thinking time. If you help your child work within his style, he will work more effectively.
3. CREATE A HOMEWORK ZONE
Set up an area in your home for studying, complete with a dictionary, paper and pens. Make sure the area is free from potential distractions and that study tools are at your
child’s fingertips to keep him focused on homework.
4. DEVELOP CLASS FILES
Develop a color-coded file for each of your child’s classes. Make separate tabs for homework assignments, exams and projects, so your child can refer back to class materials when studying for comprehensive tests.
5. SET WEEKLY MILESTONES
For big projects or exams, get a large calendar for your child’s desk area and help him set short timelines to ensure projects and studying aren’t left until the last minute. Celebrate with your child when each milestone is met. By working with your child to develop a plan to efficiently complete homework tasks, you will find higher grades, fewer homework headaches and a more confident child as a result. BACK TO SCHOOL ADVICE FOR OUR PETS The summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. We spend much time preparing our children and ourselves, yet this transition also affects our pets.
The freedom and attention received during summer vacation abruptly ends at the first day of school. Without warning, schedules shift – the coming and going, eating, exercising, and freedom may be limited while you spend time on your lessons. Their human playmates of summer suddenly have new interests and friends. All of this can create a lot of anxiety in our pets. This stress adds insecurity and affects our pets in many ways. treat to get them in their “house”(as we call it) will associate good things, not bad, with their space. When you associate it with punishment they will never think of it as their “safe” place. Emotionally, pets can also suffer from depression. What can we do to help these important members of our family? If possible, make changes and adjustments slowly, over a period of time. Dogs are creatures of habit. Part of the reason dogs get so stressed when the kids go back to school is that it causes major changes in their routines. You can ease a pet’s stress during this time by quickly establishing a new routine.

Oswald Chambers comments about this verse in his devotional, My Utmost for His Highest. REMEMBERING 9/11 The memory of 9/11 has had an undeniable impact on our nation and on our families. How much more profound has the impact been on the victims who survived the tragedy and on the families of those who died? The morning of Sept. 11, 2001, is indelibly etched in the memories of Americans everywhere. We quickly recall where we were when we first heard that the World Trade Center had been hit. And our next thoughts usually take us to our loved ones and how desperately we wanted to hold them, to reassure them, to cling to them as the world around us seemed so uncertain. The events of what would soon be known as 9/11 traumatized everyone who lived through them, even those who watched the terror on TV from thousands of miles away. All most two decades later, the memory of 9/11 has had an undeniable impact on our nation and on our families. As a nation, we’ve seen lives destroyed by enemies we knew nothing about, and our innocence and sense of security have been shattered. As individuals and families, we have come to realize just how fleeting and fragile our own lives are, and this new perspective has inspired us to reflect on what really matters.

The McGuinness Family Jennifer McGuinness depended on her dad’s faith to nurture her own. “We always believed in God, but my dad did most of the digging,” Jennifer says. But when she was 16, her father, American Airlines co-pilot Tom McGuinness, became a casualty of the 9/11 terrorist attacks when his hijacked plane flew into the north tower of the World Trade Center.
In that instant, 16-year-old Jennifer and her 14-year-old brother, Tommy, lost their father and spiritual leader. And their mother, Cheryl McGuinness, lost her husband of 18 years. growing up into practice if we were ever going to survive this,” Jennifer says. Jennifer had to choose not to allow the horrible acts of 9/11 to destroy her life, dreams and love for God. Watching her mom inspired Jennifer. “My mom has chosen to not let the challenges in her life harden her heart.”

Jennifer recalls how God’s grace came in many different forms. “It wasn’t just one thing that helped me and my brother to thrive, but a lot of things: great friends, youth group, knowing who to talk to, staying involved in activities. We tried to fill up our lives with people and activities that would help us to grow up successfully.”
When American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, who had been standing about 20 yards from the point of impact, was surrounded by destruction. As the flames engulfed Brian’s body, he thought of his wife, Mel, and their 12-year-old son, Matt, and wondered if he would ever see them again. This could be the day I die, he realized.

Searing pain, operations (more than 30) and therapy became a way of life as Brian recovered from second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body. Through it all, Mel cared for him, moving into the hospital and staying with him day and night for three months, reading the Bible and praying with him. She was torn between her duties as a wife and mother because she had to shield young Matt from Brian’s open wounds. Close family friends watched and home- schooled Matt, so he was in good hands, but at times Mel felt overwhelmed with guilt.

After Hannah’s death, Jerry started a local chapter of FFC, and by 2000 the group had placed a Bible in every firehouse in the city. FFC made presentations to each new class of firefighters and always used the opportunity to share the Gospel. One of those presentations was on Sept. 7, 2001. Ten who heard the salvation message that day died in the line of duty four days later.

When Social Media Bullying Turns Uglier by Bob Waliszewski, PluggedIn.com
When I was in elementary school, I was frightened terribly by a boy named Winfred. Winfred was a huge (I thought) fifth-grade bully. Somehow I had crossed him and as a result, he had threatened several times to beat me up. I worked hard to take different routes home from school (hiding a lot along the way) so Winfred wouldn’t find me. And fortunately, he never did—though I had some close calls. That was how bullying worked when I was young. I’m just glad Winfred didn’t have social media. Today, as we know, bullying has gone high tech…and become a lot more anonymous. Late last year, a 13-year-old girl from Southern California hanged herself, leaving a note saying she just
couldn’t take any more of the hate from her classmates. About 2.5 million people have viewed the interview with her parents on YouTube, an account that states—almost unbelievably—that the social media bullying continued even after her death. And then there’s the mixed-bag story of Jeremiah Thomas, a 16-year-old Christian athlete dying from cancer. I’ve watched a couple of Thomas’

videos on YouTube, including one in which Jeremiah shares how excited he was about a girl who came to Christ when she came to visit him in his hospital room.

But for some reason I just can’t begin to understand, Jeremiah has been pelted with hateful messages from people who say they’re glad that he’s dying. Why would anyone do that? As it turns out, Jeremiah Thomas boldly decided to use his remaining days to stand up for the life of the preborn and speak and write about it, too. According to The Daily Signal, that led to responses such as these:
These comments are beyond vile… and so sad! What’s more, I’m sure that Jeremiah was stung by them. Who wouldn’t be?
“Cancer is giving your mom a late term abortion. LMAO [laughing my a-- off],” one message said. “Jeremiah… You aren’t dead yet? God do your job!” taunted another. “Good Riddance,” another posted to Jeremiah’s prayer group page on Facebook, following with a one-star review. Jeremiah’s mother, Kendra Thomas, quoted one person as saying Jeremiah
But you sure wouldn’t be able to tell when watching him share his faith and concern for the unborn on video. He rises above the hate, finding great joy in leaving a “legacy wish” to make abortion illegal in the state of Texas. And interestingly, he has an ally in the state’s governor. You can check out his conversation from his hospital bed with Gov. Gregg Abbott online. Without question, bullying and its modern iterations on social media are wrong, wrong, wrong. But it’s nice to see a young man turn the other cheek, ignore his hate-filled critics and focus on the right things. I hope none of us have to deal with such vitriol and contempt, but if we do, we have a great example in Jeremiah Thomas on what it looks like to handle our enemies.

Heart Gallery Exhibit Opening at Great Explorations
The iconic Sunshine Skyway bridge is a testament to humankind’s architectural prowess and mother nature’s sheer beauty. Officially known as the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge (named after the former Florida governor), the Skyway was dedicated and opened on September 6th, Labor Day Weekend, in 1954. The Skyway bridge which connected Pinellas County to Manatee County, now serves over 50,000 vehicles per day!
On Wednesday, September 11th at 3:00 pm, Great Explorations Children’s Museum will be hosting a ribbon-cutting for their newest exhibit, Forever Home, a collaboration with Heart Gallery of Pinellas & Pasco, a program of Gulf Coast JFCS. The current Skyway bridge, which replaced the original, older bridge with the same name in 1987, has a total length of 21,877 feet (4.1 miles) and height of 431 feet and provides some magnificent views of Tampa Bay on a clear day! However, even though the bridge clearance is a whopping 193 feet, the Sunshine Skyway bridge is currently not tall enough to allow the new mega cruise ships to enter Tampa Bay. That being said, the bridge’s height, expansive views of the surrounding bay and modern design have earned it the number 3 spot on the Travel Channel’s list of top bridges in the world. This September don’t miss the chance to be impressed by this architectural wonder and the amazing views of the Gulf of Mexico it provides!
The Forever Home exhibit has an interactive television and several other interactive sections focused on adoption. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with Heart Gallery for this interactive exhibit,” said Great Explorations CEO, Angeline Howell. “Because of their generosity, we’re able to offer a fun learning experience to our guests that will also provide the opportunity for families to talk about adoption.”
