basics of those skills the year before. I’m sure we learned some new information related to science or social studies, but this many years later, I have no recollection of what that might have been.

Parent to Parent So, what did my class actually learn in first grade? We certainly got better at reading during the year, but we had already learned the sounds for each letter and the basics of how to put them together when we were in kindergarten. Similarly, we got a lot better at addition and subtraction, including working with double and triple digit numbers, but we had also touched on the

“ You NEVER, EVER, EVER look at the sun during a solar eclipse! ” There is one thing though that I, without a doubt, learned, internalized, and still remember to this day from first grade: “You NEVER, EVER, EVER look at the sun during a solar eclipse!” I can’t even begin to tell you how many times Miss White drilled that into our heads during the weeks leading up to the first solar eclipse I remember. This in addition to multiple children’s magazines that all had warnings about blindness and instructions for making pinhole projectors in order to watch safely. After all the hype, it’s a good thing that the sky was clear when the day of the eclipse arrived. In February in Michigan, that was certainly not a given! Our entire elementary school went out to the playground and huddled around a few of those homemade projectors to watch the moon cover about 80% of the sun.

About 15 years later, my younger sister remembers watching another eclipse through what she described as “several layers of 35mm film.” I’m not sure how accurate that is—it was probably something like the cardboard glasses that are available today. But if they made those back when I was in first grade, they were not readily available. Now, we can even buy inexpensive plastic eclipse glasses. I’ve ordered them for all my kids (and myself!), and this month, as long as the clouds cooperate, they will get to experience, here in Tampa Bay, an eclipse very similar to that one from first grade. Or, we may take a day off from school and drive the 600 miles or so to the path of totality. It’s not quite a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – after all, Tampa Bay will be in the path of totality for a solar eclipse in August 2045. But that’s a really long way off! Until next time,

A year ago this August I had the honor of being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. One of my favorite parts of the experience was re-connecting with people who influenced me and reminiscing over the years of my career. I was recently asked, “What achievements are you most proud of in your career?” There are a number of achievements I enjoyed that make me proud. One of the first that most people mention of course is our trip to the Super Bowl. That was definitely an exciting time, however, there are two things I think about before that. These are the 2 achievements in my career that make me most proud.

Assistant Coaches Going On To Success There have been six people who worked for me who went on to become head coaches. I had the opportunity to pour

into their lives and help them get started. Seeing them grow into head coaches makes me proud.

Impact in the Community Over my head coaching career, I had some tremendous players who not only did well on the field, but they also did great things in the community. I look

at the city of Tampa and the city of Indianapolis and I see the mark that our players have made. I have people come up to me all the time and say that they enjoyed watching us play, but they really enjoyed looking up to specific players on our team. The fact that we carried ourselves as gentlemen and represented those cities well, I think that is what makes me most proud.

Why Is It So Important to Wear Retainers After Orthodontic Treatment? by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics

“Really? My kid has to wear the retainer every night for the rest of their life? When I had braces, my orthodontist told me to wear it for just a couple years and then stop.” This is a very common comment we hear from curious parents when discussing the importance of wearing retainers after orthodontic treatment is completed. Where the misconception came from, we really aren’t quite sure. The evidence has been in the literature for decades about treatment relapse being predictable in both amount and timing. Nonetheless, the same surprised expression on parents’ faces are seen weekly when we deliver the news that we recommend night time wear, or as we call it, “nighttime for a lifetime” of the retainers after braces come off.

For those of you wondering what exactly a retainer is and what it does, I will digress and fill you in! The point of braces is to take your teeth from the natural position your body wants them in, to a position of a perfect bite and a handsome or beautiful smile. Once braces come off, we like to describe the teeth as being in “wet cement”. The bone and gum tissue around each and every tooth is immature. If left alone, your body will immediately fight to put the teeth back into the “natural” position they were before you ever had braces. The reality is, you have natural orthodontic forces in your mouth twenty-four hours a day. Your teeth’s position are a result of cheek pressure, tongue pressure and chewing forces. Braces did a great job overpowering those forces and putting the teeth in their perfect position,

Our office has a protocol of requesting you wear your retainers full time (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week) for the first month after the braces come off, and then we will taper the number of hours down to nighttime only wear (approximately eight to ten hours) by month three. We find that starting full time and tapering down the number of hours increases the chance of the patient’s compliance with following the protocol long term and minimizes the pressure and soreness of wearing the retainers much quicker. Additionally, we also offer a bonded wire retainer behind the lower front teeth, if requested. We are very proud of our treatments, and want you to maintain that healthy and wonderful smile forever. Be consistent Andre points to consistency as his “acein-the-hole.” “The kids always know where they stand with me,” Andre said. “It doesn’t sound like much, but I’ve

This Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bar recipe makes a nice afternoon treat, especially after a long day at school. We love it because it's quick (bars are a great treat when you don't have time to bake multiple sheets of cookies), calls for ingredients one almost always has in their pantry, and of course it’s delicious.

Oatmeal Bars

• 2 cups quick-cooking oats • ½ cup packed brown sugar • ½ cup melted butter

• ¼ cup light corn syrup • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1. In a greased 9-inch square microwave-safe dish, combine oats, brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup. 2. Microwave on high for 3 minutes, turning halfway through. 3. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and microwave at 30% power for 4 to 5 minutes until chips are soft. Spread chocolate evenly over top. 4. Refrigerate 20 minutes before cutting.

• Before heading to the restaurant, choose your entrée and look up the nutritional information – this helps control calorie intake.

•U se smaller plates and bowls. If you’re still hungry, go back for seconds.

•P lay with your kids. Hopscotch, jump rope, Wii — anything that gets you and them moving.

•E at early. This eliminates the “before dinner snack” and helps you digest your food easier.

Tiger Cubs Expected this August What better way to celebrate World Tiger day this past July 29th, than with the recent announcement by Walt Disney World that Sohni, a Sumatran tiger at the Maharajah Jungle Trek located in Asia at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is expecting her first litter of cubs in just a couple weeks. Disney shared this exciting news in the following announcement: “Disney is involved in efforts to save critically endangered Sumatran tigers. To date, the Disney Conservation Fund has provided nearly $2.5 million to protect tigers and their habitats. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Sumatran tigers Sohni and Malosi have been actively breeding, and we are delighted to announce that Sohni is pregnant and expecting cubs sometime in August.” Sohni and Malosi were introduced to Maharajah Jungle Trek after

a recent renovation. The previous tigers were relocated to make room for a breeding pair, as this is common for zoological facilities. It allowed Disney to be a part of a Sumatran tiger breeding program. Needless to say, it didn’t take long for these critically endangered Sumatran tigers to start breeding. It is not clear when the cubs will make their appearance at Maharajah Jungle Trek, but it will likely be a month or so after they are born, so that mom and cubs can bond. One thing is certain, Sohni has gotten excellent care during her pregnancy. The animal care staff and veterinarians make sure each animal receives the best care available. These tigers eat better steaks than you can find at your favorite

steakhouse! And their vet staff is sure to give them the best care. These cubs will be an awesome addition to the Disney’s Animal Kingdom family. And this news is not only very exciting news for the animal care and veterinary staff, but for the world because any Sumatran tiger birth is a win for the species. The Sumatran tiger is critically endangered with only about 400 individuals left on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. That is why each birth is so important. Zoological facilities are working together to save this species from the brink of extinction as well

as hundreds more. Deforestation and poaching are the greatest treats to these magnificent animals. There are a few simple things that you can do on a daily basis to help save amazing animals and all of the other animals that need our protection in the wild. You can take those blue bins seriously and become an avid recycler, try to use reusable bags and water bottles and bags when you’re on the go, conserve energy, carpool, find ways to volunteer or donate to spurt wildlife research, education, and conservation. Education is keep in spreading a message of conservation to protect animals such as the Sumatran tiger.

IT’S A CRAZY TIME OF YEAR:

Working together as a couple to conquer back-to-school stress by Dr. Greg Smalley, Focus on the Family

Starting the new school year can be a time of great excitement… and anxiety. Help calm your child’s fears (and your own) with these tips from some amazing educators, doctors, and other parents!

Recently my wife, Erin, and I were in a kindergarten orientation meeting for parents. This was our fourth such orientation, but it is also represented our last – which was especially hard for Erin. The principal asked if anyone had an example of how he or she reads with the kids at home. I said, “I read with my kids all the time – I turn on the closed captioning when we’re watching TV.”

Another challenge for couples is deciding how to divide responsibilities. Although one spouse may not have time to participate in all the back-to-school activities, it doesn’t mean that he or she cannot be a part of this changing season in family life. If all the preparation falls solely on one spouse’s shoulders, the other spouse can offer support in other practical ways.

You could hear crickets chirping. The awkwardness finally ended as Erin gave me that half-smile that meant I was in big trouble.

It’s best to discuss these responsibilities as teammates. Make a list of all the tasks needed to get your kids back in school. Then discuss how to divide them. If some of the chores start to create a tug-of-war, make it your goal to out-serve your spouse. I made the decision to get up an hour earlier so I can unload the dishwasher and cook breakfast for the kids. I may hate unloading the dishes, but I know that Erin likes to leave the house with a clean sink and an empty dishwasher. This is one way I can serve my wife.

The stress and anxiety of preparing kids to o back to school can create unique challenges for couples. Increased conflict is common during this time of transition. The best way to deescalate some of this tension is to recognize what is going on for you emotionally. Talk to your spouse and try putting into words how you’re feeling – “I’m overwhelmed trying to gather all of the back-to-school supplies,” or “I’m worried that our daughter won’t make any friends at her new school.” When you express how you’re feeling, it can calm you down.

It’s possible for your marriage to thrive during the back-to-school season when you take time to care for each other and pursue unity.

Getting In Gear: A Back to School Guide for Parents

If you’re feeling apprehensive about the upcoming start of school — frazzled mornings, preparing lunches, negotiating school attire and regulating “screen” time — take solace in the fact that you play a critical part in getting your children motivated and excited to tackle the new school year.

Develop A Family Event Calendar. One of the most helpful tools for getting organized is a family calendar. Keep track of school schedules and events, volunteer work, after-school activities as well as designated study and family time. Effective time management is the key to avoiding stress and disorganization.

Depending on your child’s age, your role will vary but here are some helpful ideas to ease kids of all ages back into learning mode:

• Depending on your children’s ages, your calendar can be on construction paper with large squares to write in all necessary information, or it can be produced on a white board so that it is easy to revise.

Help Your Child Discover His/Her Learning Style. Because each child is special, with different learning styles and academic needs, it is important to personalize the learning process. People learn in at least eight different ways, according to the Multiple Intelligences Theory: visually, verbally, physically, mathematically, musically, naturalistically, through group activity or through quiet thinking time. Think about how your child learns best and talk about her learning strengths and needs. Check in with her teachers early in the year and discuss how, together, you can provide the best support.

Preparing your child to head back to school is not simple. There are clothes to buy, supplies to stock and, of course, the annual health assessment that most schools require. This annual exam is important as it may be the only time your school-aged child will see a health care provider in the entire year. It is the time to look in the ears and check the heart, as well as an opportunity to assess your child’s immunization status (and get that flu vaccine), examine the spine for scoliosis, assess any behavioral problems, or check for the many issues that a child-maturing body and mind can experience. This exam is especially important for homeschooled students who may not be required to have a health assessment.

Most children use backpacks nowadays. Not only ensuring the proper size and fit, but also teaching your child the correct way to wear a backpack will prevent many back and shoulder strains. For example, if your child uses a lightweight, canvas backpack, he should never carry more than 20% of his body weight – and should always use two wide, padded shoulder straps and a waist belt to help distribute the weight more evenly across the body.

Chronic Conditions If your child has a chronic condition, such as asthma or diabetes, it is important to inform the teachers and school

health officials of the condition, even if the illness is well controlled. Provide a list of any medications your child takes, even if they are taken only at home. Notify the school of any allergies or physical restrictions. Equally important is to understand what health services are available in the school. Is there a nurse or an advanced practice nurse at the school? What type of equipment is available to assess your child’s condition if he becomes ill? What tasks is the nurse or other staff allowed to perform, e.g. take vital signs or administer medications? Are you allowed to keep medication for your child in the health office? Knowing the roles and abilities of your child’s school health office will help you plan ahead if your child needs medical attention.

It is not uncommon for ‘little’ epidemics of minor illness to sweep through schools. These may include conjunctivitis (pink eye), strep throat, stomach viruses, etc. While some of this is inevitable, the occurrences can be lessened in two ways. The first: if your child is obviously ill, do not send him to school as you will only help spread his illness to the other students. The second: it is the school’s responsibility to send home any sick child in order to limit the spread of the illness.

When the kids are in school, health should be one of your top priorities. Of course, learning is important, but lots of children in one place mean lots of germs. Following these tips will help your kids stay healthy and will make school health a top priority for your family.

Finally, get your child into a healthy routine of exercise and sleep. If the physical exercise at school is limited, your child will need play/exercise time after school. Sleep is vitally important; most children need 8 to 10 hours of sleep to function optimally. If they don’t get the required amount, they simply will not be alert in class, have difficulty paying attention, and perhaps experience more behavioral problems.

TIPS FOR A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR

I love the start of a new school year. As an educator, August is the New Year that affords a fresh beginning. It is a time to reevaluate, try out new materials, read new books, meet new students and parents, and make improvements to ideas and plans that are mediocre or stale. Prior to school, I consider a theme for the year and revisit our mission and vision as a ministry. In addition to shopping for school supplies and clothing, the new school year is also a time for parents to consider what changes they want to make in the family routine and prioritizing of activities. While many welcome the structure and accountability after a long summer, some are not as eager for the added responsibilities. Before the onslaught of classes and meetings, step back and look at the big picture rather than the tasks that are soon to be imposed by a new schedule. Consider this checklist for preparing the family for the start of school.

Plan a Family Pow-Wow, Meeting of the Minds, Family Summit—whatever name you want to give it. Create excitement and anticipation for this special family meeting. Let everyone contribute. Gather your children together to discuss your goals and their goals for the year. What new challenges might they face? How will the added workload

and responsibilities at school effect new privileges? What do your children hope to get from the year? What do they hope to learn? How do they hope to grow spiritually? How will they choose their friends? How can they be a friend? What will help them become an excellent student? Pray for the school, the teachers, and students. Take notes and video your children reading the notes at the end of meeting so you can revisit your goals each quarter to assess progress. Then you can celebrate successes and provide encouragement where needed.

Set expectations for academics and behavior (Col. 3:23). Instill confidence (Ps. 121:2). Encourage and guide your children toward making wise choices in their relationships (1 Cor. 15:33). Prepare a comfortable space with few distractions, where your children can do their school work. Maintain a regular bedtime routine, to include reading, prayer, and time for bed.

Limit the use of television and electronic devices. Turn devices off an hour before the bedtime routine. Add a family reading time to your evening routine.

School begins in just a few weeks but there is plenty of time to prepare for a great school year. Use this checklist as a catalyst for setting goals for the coming year. There are many factors to consider beyond budget, and experts say this can be a difficult process to navigate. “With hundreds of makes and models to choose from, young car buyers can find it challenging to select the best match for their new lifestyles,” says Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader. There may likely be conflicting priorities between the student who will be driving the car and the parents who may be funding the purchase. To help families select cars for young drivers, as well as prepare them for safe travels, the experts at Autotrader are sharing tips and insights. • Consider new vs. used vs. hand-me-down: New cars don’t typically require much maintenance, which can make them good choices for young people, who should

Whatever way you acquire your vehicle, it’s important to remember that regular maintenance will extend the life of your car. Frequently wash your car to keep the paint and finish in good condition. Check tire pressure, inspect wiper blades, the engine, belts, hoses and coolant, and check alignment and suspension. While knowing how to perform these routine tasks is an invaluable skill, you may prefer taking your car to a professional. Find a trusted mechanic near your home or campus. MOM CONCERNED THAT SON WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL

Q: Our 14-year-old son wants to start playing football. My husband is all-in, but I’m reluctant due to the injury risk. Do you have any advice?

Jim: I think a common misperception is that “manliness” equates to brute power and strength. But when it comes to being a good father and husband, I’d suggest something else. How about “sacrifice”?

Jim: I personally love football, but I also know firsthand how rough it can be — my playing days ended with a broken collarbone in high school. Football is a great sport that teaches kids many good qualities, including teamwork, and helps them get in shape. But parents and children need to be aware of the risks associated with such a rough contact sport. According to the journal Pediatrics, football accounts for about 22 percent of all concussions among 8- to 19-yearolds. In fact, the study’s researchers found that 27 percent of football players ages 12 through 17 have had a least one concussion. Other research has identified a serious condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (C.T.E.), which can develop after repeated concussions and trauma. On a broader scale that encompasses all sports, studies by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons show that young people are facing more serious injuries than ever before — torn ligaments, dislocated shoulders, neck and knee injuries and strained muscles and joints — all from high school athletics. I’m certainly not slamming youth sports. But as parents, we may need to help our kids find a balance between athletics and other less physically demanding activities. If your children are involved in high-impact sports yearround, you might encourage them to take a season off to pursue other interests and allow their bodies to heal. Even

though they’re young and energetic, teens need time to rest and recuperate, just like the rest of us. If and when our kids get hurt, we shouldn’t push them back out on the field too soon. Playing when you’re injured isn’t tough — it’s negligent. Along those lines, make sure that coaches and trainers are properly qualified to assess injuries (especially concussions), and are fully committed to placing player safety above any other outcome. If the coach’s perspective is “win at all costs,” your child will be better off playing elsewhere or trying a different activity.

“Sacrifice” is considered a weakness by a lot of guys. That’s too bad, because when you look at healthy families you generally see a common trait: sacrificial men. These are the guys who go to their kids’ soccer games even if they’d rather stay home and watch football. They’re patient with their kids when a bike gets left in the rain for the umpteenth time. Men who sacrifice develop stronger, more loving family relationships. It’s a paradox, really. We’re at our strongest when we lay down our lives, even in small ways, for our wives and children. It can be hard to do, and we don’t always do it well. But that’s why it’s called “sacrifice.” As fathers, we have to challenge ourselves to sacrifice for our families. We should not only tell them we love them,

RAISING TWINS CAN BE A REAL ADVENTURE Q: Is there anything special we need to know about raising twins? We just became the proud parents of two precious children, and we’d like to get our family off to a good start. Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Apart from the fact that it’s twice the work (and twice the fun!), raising twins doesn’t differ significantly from the rearing of other children. Generally speaking, it’s based on the same foundational principles of love, limits and close parental involvement. However, there are some special considerations to keep in mind, particularly if you’ve been blessed with identical twins (my father-in-law is an identical twin).

There’s nothing wrong with highlighting the similarities between your twins — for example, by dressing them in identical clothes when they’re small. But you should also be looking for ways to appreciate and emphasize their differences. Make a point of allowing both kids to be themselves. As much as possible, love and discipline each one individually, according to his or her own temperament and personality. Dozens of detailed studies, involving over 14,000 pairs of twins, have emphasized that each child is unique and needs a different parenting response. As your kids grow older, check in with them from time to time to see how they’re doing. Ask questions like, “How does it feel to be a twin in this family? What can we do to strengthen our relationship?” In short, do everything you can to ensure that the uniqueness of each child isn’t overlooked.

In the meantime, don’t neglect your own needs as parents and as a couple. Invest time and effort in building and maintaining a strong support system. Don’t be afraid to request help from parents, relatives and friends. Plan regular date nights, and work to keep your marriage healthy and strong. Raising twins is a big job, and it can be exhausting at times — but completely worth it!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN YOUR COMMUNITY Q: How can I get involved with the effort to protect and rescue the innocent victims of exploitation? Recently I heard about human trafficking and sexual slavery right here in our own community! Jim: It’s true that human trafficking, sexual slavery and various types of bondage are going on all around us. Most of us go about our business blissfully ignorant of the suffering and tragedy that could be taking place under our very noses. If you see someone you suspect might be a victim of trafficking, watch for evidence that he or she is being controlled. Signs include inability to move or leave a job, fear or depression, lack of identification or marks of physical abuse. If you have an opportunity to speak with such an

with Jim Daly individual in a non-threatening situation, ask questions like, “Do you want to be doing this work?” “Are you being paid?” “Can you leave if you choose to do so?” and “Where do you live and what are your working conditions like?” Should you come across evidence of trafficking in your neighborhood, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888. On the home front, the best way to fight trafficking is to build strong relationships with your own children. Home should be the place where they get their strokes and their positive self-image. You can protect them against negative outside influences by forging a bond of mutual trust. Acknowledge that there are dangerous people in society, then make it clear to your kids that they can always come to you with their needs, problems and concerns. Children who get that kind of affirmation at home generally don’t go looking for it somewhere else. SINGLE ADULT CONSIDERS WHETHER TO ADOPT AN ORPHAN Q: I’m a single adult who is deeply concerned about the plight of orphans in this country and around the world, and I’d like to do my part by adopting a child who needs a home. What is your advice? Jim: I applaud your selfless attitude and your willingness to welcome a needy child into your home; the need for more adoptive parents is huge. That said, Focus on the Family remains committed to the ideal that the two-parent home — founded on a loving marriage relationship between one man and one woman — is the optimum environment for every child. This is our Creator’s design for the family, and we’re convinced that it’s the best arrangement for all concerned. Studies overwhelmingly demonstrate that children do best in all measurable ways when they’re in stable homes with a mother and a father. That’s why — and as most single moms and dads would be the first to confirm — single-parenting is a stiff challenge even under the most favorable circumstances. So I would counsel anyone who is considering this option to proceed with great care. Furthermore, moms and dads are innately different.
