Parent to Parent

even a semi-clear picture. But hey, I don’t watch much TV myself other than sporting events, and the Lightning are having a terrible season anyway. Add that to the fact that we still have the smaller TV that works just fine, and I haven’t been in any hurry to replace it. My kids, on the other hand, have been begging us for a new TV.

“ My kids also have the So we have a “small” 32-inch television in our living room (isn’t it ridiculous that someone who grew up watching 13- and 19-inch TVs calls that small?), and until recently, a 51-inch television in our family room. The big TV is over 10 years old and has been going bad for several months now, starting with poor coloring, and eventually getting to the point where it would need to warm up for over 10 minutes to show

oddest ways of being “helpful” sometimes. ”

My kids also have the oddest ways of being “helpful” sometimes. David, my oldest, found an old projection TV at a yard sale and brought it home. One Saturday, while the rest of us were away, he decided to “help” by taking the worn out TV out to the trash (turns out the trash service won’t pick it up though), and replacing it with this 25-inch garage sale find. Then he couldn’t stop there. After hooking up the cable box and the Blu-ray player, he added an old 100-CD rack that we had out in the garage (ever hear

of an iPod, David?) and a VHS player (wow!). And now that we had a VHS player in our family room, we of course would need some tapes to play in it. So he went up to his sister’s room (she has an old TV/VHS combo), dumped out all her movies, and selected enough to fill up all of the shelves on the entertainment center (the rest he left lying on the floor in her room). Between the 25-inch projection TV and the shelves full of VHS tapes, our family room now comes straight out of the 90s! At least we don’t have an antenna. I’m sure I won’t be surprised though if for his next garage sale buy, David goes even more retro and comes home with an Atari or a record player. At least that would be retro enough to be cool! Until next time,

Jennifer

While there are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day, some historians believe that it originated with St. Valentine. Legend states that St. Valentine was imprisoned by Claudius II after refusing to honor an order forbidding marriage. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” to the jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended. The note was addressed to “his beloved” and read “from your Valentine.” Valentine was martyred on February 14, 269 A.D.

in the kitchen

This taco meatball filled ring was a huge hit in our family. While the kids really enjoyed making it, what they loved was eating it. It looks quite complicated to make, but it was actually quite easy. This is one recipe that we are sure to use again.

Taco Meatball Ring • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese • ¼ cup water • 1 envelope taco seasoning

• 1 pound lean ground beef • 2 8-ounce packages refrigerated crescent rolls

• Desired toppings: shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, shredded cheese, sliced olives, sour cream

1. In a large bowl, combine cheese, water and taco seasoning. Add ground beef and mix well. 2. Shape meat mixture into 16 meatballs and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 16 to 18 minutes until cooked through. 3. Arrange crescent rolls on a greased 15-inch pizza pan overlapping the wide ends. Place one meatball on each roll and tuck the point of the crescent roll over the meatball. Bake at 375 degrees for 14 to 16 minutes until rolls are browned. 4. Transfer ring to a serving platter. Arrange toppings in the center of the ring.

5. Something written

Leave notes, letters, poems, cards, messages on the bathroom mirror, or creative written reminders of affection somewhere she’ll find them.

4. Going out on a date

A weekly date without the kids can be a lifesaver for your romance. Take her to dinner and/or the theater; go on a drive, antiquing, window-shopping, or some special place she’s been talking about.

3. Meals

Have a quiet meal together with candlelight, linger over breakfast, or go on a picnic. Get dressed up and go to a nice restaurant. Definitely not fast food!

2. Touch

Use nonsexual touch: holding her, hugging her, cuddling with her, or placing an arm around her in public. Cradling her face in your hands and looking into her eyes, and gently rubbing her back can communicate tender love to your wife.

1. Flowers

Deliver, hand-pick, or bring home a single rose. It’s the gold standard, men. You can’t go wrong. Tulips are a great second choice. Dennis Rainey is the executive director and co-founder of FamilyLife and co-hosts the radio program, FamilyLife Today.

February Family of the Month

What a wonderful perspective on life our February Family of the Month has! The Nowlin family finds true joy in life and each other and they show and share their love in so many ways. Charlie and Elizabeth first met while attending a Christian summer camp when they were in high school; however, the romance didn’t come until much later when “the time was right.” Since then, they have been blessed with a home filled with fun and laughter and not to mention three amazing boys! “Our children are the loves of our lives and it is a real joy to be able to take care of them. We get so much enjoyment from just watching them grow and learn and mature. The difficult part of parenting though is that we know there will be hard and disappointing moments—but parenting is not hard work, it is HEART work.” Together, the Nowlins know how to make the most of life! But this young family does know heartache too -- more than most of their peers can even imagine. “Our whole perspective on life changed this past year;

the experience brought our sense of family and faith to a much higher level,” explained the couple, as they recounted the courageous battle their son Everett fought this past year. “Over the past year, our family encountered incredible trials that could have so easily broken us. However, family, friends and strangers provided a very unique kind of care that allowed us to survive both individually and as a family. This year we discovered what it truly means to “love your neighbor” and we found out how many people were willing to drop their lives and help our family in so many ways. We couldn’t imagine doing this past year without them and our family is forever grateful for their love and service.” Tragedy has not stopped this young family’s love and support of one another. On the contrary, it has brought new meaning to their lives, and their bonds are stronger than ever. Gulf Coast Family commends you, Elizabeth and Charlie, not only for your positive spirit, but for reaching out to others through your experience.

Meet the Nowlin Family

Family Favorites

February equals strawberry season in our home, so that means heading to Parkesdale Farms to get some strawberry shortcake! February is also Heart month and as a family of a congenital heart patient we are thinking of other Heart families this month. Local “vacation-type” activity: We love Sailing Florida and have used them many times to charter sail boats out of St. Pete. Foods: Charlie loves LaTeresita’s Arroz Con Pollo, Elizabeth enjoys trying something new at every opportunity, Trenton likes Sushi, and Nate will have one more banana! Restaurants: We all love Capital Tacos because the food is amazing and we can ride our bikes there. Sports teams: The Auburn Tigers Movies: Star Wars and Marvel movies. Words of wisdom: Don’t be afraid

to trust an unknown future to a known God.

Our fondest memory from 2016. There was a Sunday evening this past year when most of our siblings, our three boys, our three nieces, and one nephew came over for a Marco's pizza picnic in the front yard. It was totally impromptu and one of the greatest family nights because we had all three of our boys. The big kids played and Everett's oxygen line reached just far enough for him to join the group and watch all the action. It was simple and beautiful!

Meet the Kids Trenton (13.5) is a kind and quiet kid who loves being outside fishing, riding his bike and playing with neighborhood friends. He’s enjoys passing the time playing Clash Royale and he can’t wait until Star Wars The Last Jedi comes out! Nate (2.5) loves every day of his life and fills his time with imagination based play. Recently he was sitting in his old Exersaucer with a 10 key calculator “flying an airplane”. He also loves playing outside, making friends at Publix and being towed in his bike trailer. It’s important to note that he’s joined the Dark Side!

The name Everett means “strong and courageous like a boar”, and boy was he ever! He was the strongest and most courageous little baby there has ever been. With God, his parents, his family and the medical team’s help, he scaled so many walls and overcame so many odds. We will always remember his joyful, fighting spirit.

A Heart Full of Love Everett Nowlin January 18, 2016 - November 12, 2016 It was not long after Nate was born that we were ready for another baby fairly soon. We were so excited to see siblings close together and the bond that would bring. At 20 weeks we found out that Everett had a heart rate of 55 due to a rare condition known as Complete Heart Block. We spent the next 4 months in countless doctor appointments wondering if we would ever meet him. Very soon after his diagnosis we became a St. Joe’s Family. MDs, PAs, APRNs, RNs, and stenographers became family to us, cheerleaders for Everett, and will never leave our hearts. Everett had surgery at a week old to implant a pacemaker. Then just four days later he had emergency surgery after he coded. He spent the next week on ECMO, a treatment that uses a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung back into the bloodstream.

www.gulfcoastfamily.org

At 7 weeks were blessed to be able to bring Everett home. It was one of the most intimidating yet joyous experiences of our lives. We cared for him around the clock and watched him grow on his own terms. We knew that each day with him was a gift. Our bedroom became a hospital room filled with IV lines, feeding pumps, oxygen condensers, and medical equipment we did not know existed only months before. Everett finally hit his stride in July and we started seeing him catch up on milestones. It was amazing to watch. Suddenly he was showing us something new every day and while his care was no easier we were just beginning to hope we might actually have him for a while. In November he caught a cold that his body couldn’t fight off and he died in our arms at St. Joe’s 8 days later. Our family is grieving, each in our own way, and we are just trying to show each other grace during this time. On Everett’s birthday our family went sailing and scattered his remains. We continue to treasure his memory and live life with the joy he showed daily.

Though all children are amazing to their parents, Everett defied so many odds and experienced what he only knew to be a joyful life. This has humbled and inspired us. We wanted him before his diagnosis, through every hurdle along the way and today he continues to be wanted. He taught us that joy could be found in a challenge filled life. For a child with so many struggles his indomitable spirit never wavered, even as his body failed him. He loved with a big heart and enjoyed the beautiful simplicity of life. May his legacy be an inspiration to us to live with the same spirit.

not only have to open her own doors but has to get the kids in the door herself.

ALLPRODAD.COM

To be more romantic, don’t make things about your happiness but about your wife’s happiness instead. When you do that, you’ll be romantic in her eyes. And Valentine’s Day will be just an extension of the natural romantic that you now are. Here are 4 ways you can make Valentine’s Day and your marriage not about you but about your wife.

1. Set her apart. It’s here, fellas. Valentine’s Day is upon is. To some, the mere thought may cause you to break into a cold sweat. It’s the one day of the year where we are supposed to be, no, have to be romantic with our spouse. Well, Valentine’s Day is really not the only day of the year we are supposed to be romantic, but it is one of those days where we are encouraged to do so and may be judged if we’re not. For those of us who don’t know the meaning of the word romantic or who don’t have a romantic bone in our bodies, it can be a challenge. For those of us who struggle in the romance department, there is a trick, a hack that can help you be the most ro-

mantic person on every day of the year. It’s simple, but not easy. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s not about you—and neither is your marriage. When we understand this and act according to it, romance will be easy. Try this: Think back to your dating days before you and your spouse were married. One of your biggest priorities was making things about her. The restaurant, the date night activity, the clothes or cologne you wore, the doors you opened for her. You made it about her. Then you got married. Maybe you chose to go wherever to eat, date nights disappeared, and she didn’t always smell the fresh fragrance of cologne on you. Now, she may

Your wife has a spot that nobody else can or should occupy. Not your kids, your parents, your golfing buddies, your boss, or anybody. Let her know this and let others know this, with your words and actions.

2. Take on the hard stuff on her behalf. Ever heard of “good cop, bad cop.” Sometimes you have to be the “bad cop” in your

marriage in order to keep her looking good. Being willing to have the next couple of difficult conversations with your kids or family members. Do whatever you can to take some of the heat off of her. Volunteer for some of the harder cleaning items around the house, particularly the ones you know she hates.

3. Love her like you’d want to be loved. You probably treat yourself pretty darn good. You do your best to encourage yourself, to take care of your body and do what you think is best for you. Do that for your wife. Love her in a way that makes her feel loved. Be sure to find out her love language first.

4. Get close and intimate with her.

Intimacy is doing or sharing things with a person that you don’t do with anyone else. Do that with your wife. Share your deepest feelings, concerns, fears, dreams, and anything else. Don’t hold anything back, and don’t let anything get between you and her. When you do these things you will have no problem being romantic, and your wife will know Valentine’s Day and your marriage is not about you, but your love for her.

DUNGY DIARIES

WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU

MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER?

AllProDad.com

This past August I had the honor of being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. One of my favorite parts of the experience was re-connecting with people who influenced me and reminiscing over the years of my career. I was recently asked, “What achievements are you most proud of in your career?” There are a number of achievements I enjoyed that make me proud. One of the first that most people mention of course is our trip to the Super Bowl. That was definitely an exciting time, however, there are two things I think about before that. These are the 2 achievements in my career that make me most proud.

Assistant Coaches Going On To Success There have been six people who worked for me who went on to become head coaches. I had the opportunity to pour into their lives and help them get started. Seeing them grow into head coaches makes me proud.

Impact in the Community Over my head coaching career, I had some tremendous players who not only did well on the field, but they also did great things in the community. I look at the city of Tampa and the city of Indianapolis and I see the mark that our players have made. I have people come up to me all the time and say that they enjoyed watching us play, but they really enjoyed looking up to specific players on our team. The fact that we carried ourselves as gentlemen and represented those cities well, I think that is what makes me most proud.

Bill & Pam Farrel

How Do You Spell LOVE? With Valentine’s Day season upon us, you might wonder how spell L.O.V.E. In our book, The First Five Years, we explain how to create a memorable romantic encounter for your spouse no matter how many years you are married. Keep this acrostic for LOVE in mind as you make plans to wow the one you love:

Listen • Observe • Vary • Extract

Listen

Your spouse will drop hints about the things he or she loves and you can use these hints to create more romance and sizzle in your re-

lationship. For example, if you listen to Bill and me in a casual lunch conversation, you would be apt to find out that Bill loves things like: Football, fishing, cooking, joke telling, and the Bible. If you listen to Pam you’d discover she loves travel, biking, swimming, tennis, laughing, and helping women-and the spa! It doesn’t take much imagination then to know that if I (Pam) give Bill a day of ocean fishing or if he gave me a day at the spa, we would be more interested in each other at the end of that day. Bill and I also keep a running list of “loves” we discover about one another while listening.

For dating couples, being an active listener can show you are cherishing and valuing the one you are dating. If he or she shares a favorite food, type of entertainment, or hobby and you create a date that includes this you gain points in the romance column.

Observe

On the TV show Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes wows the audience by his keen detective skills of observation. You can become a detective and easily observe what will bless and ignite your spouse: • What raises stress in your partner-then make a plan to lower it • What lifts the spirit-then make a plan to repeat it • What calms the atmosphere-then recreate it • What things are collectible-then add to it • When he or she sighs or purrs-then repeat it • What makes him/her ask for more-then expand it • What draws him/her to you-then protect it

Vary

For married couples, when it comes to intimacy, don’t get in a rut. Vary the place, the lighting, and your invitation asking your mate to join you in some red hot monoga-

my. In our book, Red Hot Monogamy, we give over 200 Red Hot Romance ideas. One of the easiest ways to vary the experience is to keep the five senses in mind. Add new sounds/music, add new smells, textures, or tastes. Even dinner and a movie can become a rut if it is your weekly ritual. For all couples, dating and married, add in some active dates, some dates with friends and family as well as solo romantic moments to add dimension to your love.

Extract

To extract love, take an old idea and give it a new spin. Personalize it, shake it up, add to it. Take a tradition and give it a tilt: If you go to dinner each Thursday, next week eat it on the rooftop, or on a blanket at the park. If you usually work out as a couple, then make the next date a payoff- get some new athletic wear and try out a new activity. L.O.V.E: Listen, observe, vary and extract to create a love to look forward to living. It is possible to keep love as red hot as those candy hearts you munch on each Valentine’s Day-it just takes a little creativity and some L.O.V.E.

Are You Living with Chronic Pain? by Dr. Kelley Mulhern, Thrive! Chiropractic & Wellness, LLC

What does chronic pain look like? It’s the busy Mom with constant headaches that prevent her from fully enjoying her time with her kids. It’s the man with low back pain which makes it hard for him to provide for his family. It’s the young adult with nagging sports injuries. It’s the person with lingering neck and shoulder pain months or years after a car accident. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. According to the National Centers for Health Statistics, chronic pain impacts more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. The annual cost of chronic pain in the US is estimated to be $100 billion, including healthcare expenses, lost income, and lost productivity. In addition to the economic impact, chronic pain causes depression, disrupts concentration, reduces energy levels, and interferes with sleep. What can you do to reduce or eliminate chronic pain?

RAISING THE NEX

TG

1. Cool it! If your chronic pain is inflammatory in nature, ice is an easy way to reduce your pain. Never apply an ice pack directly to your skin – always wrap it in a towel and leave it on the affected area for 10-15 minutes. TIP: If you’re putting heat on an inflammatory condition, it’s like adding fuel to a fire. 2. Get moving! Motion and pressure signals travel to the brain faster than pain signals. (That’s why when you slam your hand in a door your automatic reaction is to shake or squeeze it.) If you can keep moving in a gentle, non-irritating manner, it may reward you with more energy and diminished pain. TIP: Any movement or stretching you do should not increase your pain. If it does, you’re doing too much or it’s too soon. 3. Consider Your Food! Many foods promote inflammation in the body. Work with someone who can help you remove foods that aggravate your condition and replace them with foods to help heal your body.

EN

4. Give your body some attention! Chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, yoga, essential oils, energy work, and other complementary approaches may provide significant relief. 5. Get Help! Chronic pain is almost always the result of some underlying condition. See a licensed healthcare provider to be properly diagnosed. TIP: You know your body better than any healthcare provider. Find a practitioner who works with you, and don’t hesitate to get a second opinion if need be. 6. Explore Technology! With each passing day, there are technological advances that can dramatically impact your life.

Play! Learn! Grow! Pinellas County Schools Pre-K and VPK Pinellas County Schools is starting a new, more convenient online application process for Prekindergarten for 3 year olds and Voluntary Prekindergarten. In the past, parents had to visit elementary schools to apply for a seat. March 20–April 9, parents will be able to apply online for Pre-K 3 and VPK for the 2017–18 school year. • Pre-K 3 is for children who will be 3 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017. • VPK is for children who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017.

How to Register: Families interested in VPK will need to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (voucher) from the Early Learning Coalition at www.vpkpinellas.net. If you have questions, call 727-400-4411. You will not need a voucher for Pre-K 3. 1. Get a PCS User ID and Password. Go to any district school with your government-issued ID to obtain a user ID and password (if you don’t have one for another child).

4. Enroll at your assigned school April 25-May 9. Bring the required documents listed on the district website.

Developmental Standards. They provide a full day of activities in a safe and nurturing environment. Most classes are staffed with a certified teacher.

For information about Pre-K 3, visit www.pcsb.org/prek3 or call 727-588-6000 ext. 2184. For information about VPK, visit www.pcsb.org/vpk or call 727-588-6513.

Onsite before- and after-care is available. Pinellas County Schools programs provide a smooth transition to kindergarten, developing familiarity with the campus and school resources.

Why is prekindergarten important? The early years are a significant time for learning and development. Prekindergarten programs help provide the foundation for healthy development and more advanced learning. In Pinellas County Schools high-quality prekindergarten programs, children: • Develop social and emotional skills • Build language, literacy and communication skills • Explore math and science • Discover the joy of learning

2. Apply at reservation.pcsb.org March 20–April 9.

Pre-K 3 • The cost is $75 per week plus a nonrefundable registration fee of $105 that is applied to tuition. • At select locations, the Pre-K 3 program is supported with Title I funding. Qualifying families at Title I schools do not pay tuition.

Tips to get ready for prekindergarten

;; Listen to your child’s concerns.

Research shows that early education leads to better outcomes in school and in life. Children who attend high-quality prekindergarten programs are less likely to use special education services or be held back in school. They’re also more likely to graduate, attend college and be successful in their careers.

;; Talk with the school’s nurse if your child has allergies or special medical needs.

Pinellas County Schools Pre-K and VPK programs are guided by the Florida Early Learning and

;; Establish a bedtime and morning routine a few weeks before prekindergarten starts. ;; Read books about preschool.

Activities include a morning circle, center-time choices, outside play, rest, and closing circle. This structure offers children balanced opportunities to learn through play, exploration and real-world experiences. Center-time choices allow children to select activities such as blocks, dramatic play, art, construction toys and science. Outside play offers children time to run, play and extend their learning in the outdoors. Children also participate in physical education classes. Teachers play alongside children to encourage physical, social, and cognitive development.

How much do Pinellas County Schools prekindergarten programs cost?

3. Log onto reservation.pcsb.org beginning April 25 to find out if your application was selected.

;; Plan to attend school events to learn more about your child’s prekindergarten program and meet your child’s teacher.

What is a typical day like in Pinellas County Schools prekindergarten programs?

;; Prepare for a bit of separation anxiety the first few weeks.

VPK • Pinellas County Schools VPK program is free for the first three hours of the day. The program can be extended for an additional three hours through a tuition fee of $65 a week and a $91 non-refundable registration fee, which will be applied to the last two weeks’ tuition. The district calls this VPK+3. • At select locations, the VPK+3 program is supported with Title I funding. Qualifying families at these schools do not pay tuition.

;; Visit www.pcsb.org/prek3 or www.pcsb.org/vpk for child development tips.

Math Success Begins With Algebra Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan of St. Petersburg In today’s society, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must understand algebraic concepts and be able to work with technology. Changes in society and new expectations of colleges and employers have revolutionized math curriculums. Success in algebra often correlates to success in college, so it is very important for today’s students to do their best with this critical subject.

What Parents Can Do

Parents can sometimes feel intimidated because they lack experience with updated math teaching and technology. What practical steps can be taken to ease parental concerns and help families build confidence in this new approach to middle and high school mathematics?

Encourage children to take algebra early in their educational careers, if they are academically ready. Students who do not take courses covering algebraic concepts early in their schooling risk missing important opportunities for growth. By the end of junior and senior years, students who have not planned ahead, have fewer options in what classes they can take and may not be able to complete prerequisite courses. This can restrict a student’s college options and limit their career aspirations.

To support your child’s math learning, parents must believe that everyone can learn mathematics, and that learning math is essential to lifelong success. Experts agree that parents can encourage a positive attitude towards mathematics by boosting a child’s confidence and competence. Studies indicate that people who have experienced long-term difficulty with a subject tend to give up quicker than those who have met with success. Therefore, it is important for parents to intervene as soon as a child exhibit signs that he is struggling with a concept.

Incorporate technology. Technology should support math instruction and students should be encouraged to use all of the modern tools at their disposal to gain an understanding of the underlying reasoning and computations used in problem-solving. Educators believe that infusing learning aids and technology during in-school math instruction and homework completion provides an advantage at test time because it allows students to easily absorb and retain crucial math concepts.

Responsiveness

Students who take advanced mathematics courses during high school, and begin to study algebra during middle school, are at an advantage. Traditionally, students cannot take a higher-level mathematics class in high school until they have successfully completed Algebra 1.

Persuade children to take additional math classes. Many students indicate that they do not plan to take math classes beyond their school requirements. Math classes offer critical learning skills that are needed throughout life. Success in algebra correlates with success in higher education and learning reasoning skills. Taking additional math classes helps children to become logical, independent thinkers.

What Parents Need to Know

Fortunately, parents can nurture and build comprehension by blending common sense and state-of-the-art technology to ensure a positive learning experience. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to all ages, grades and skill levels, believes, in order to make competent decisions, children must learn to analyze facts and understand complex situations.

Purposeful Interaction Dr. Kira Wilson, Director, Covenant Academy Have you observed the mother in the grocery store talking non-stop to her infant as she traverses the isles? She speaks as if the child has complete understanding for the items she is browsing through and the level of vocabulary she articulates. Some might question the sanity of this mother as she details the sights and sounds of the child’s surroundings. This is a mother who intuitively knows the value of purposeful interaction and will perhaps spend her parenting years pro-

viding constant conversation and instruction to her children, which I applaud. Parent-child interaction is crucial in helping children connect meaning to the people, places, events, and objects in their world. Research reports that positive parent-child interaction that includes parents providing meaning to everyday encounters, and offering support and encouragement, fosters academic success. Interaction and conversation helps develop critical

thinking and worldview. It is through questions and discussion that children sharpen their ability to compare and contrast, and learn to understand and evaluate the ideas and beliefs of their family and culture. Parents, who are purposeful in teaching their children, take opportunities to talk about and find meaning in the things they encounter together. These parents, like the mother in the grocery store, are “pointer-outers,” pointing out and describing new objects or ideas to their children. Purposeful interaction is illustrated by a parent pointing out a fire hydrant on a walk with a toddler and describing how that object is connected to the red truck and siren, seen and heard in traffic. When parenting is passive rather than purposeful, that fire hydrant goes unnoticed by the child, and a learning opportunity and means for making sense of that little corner of their world is lost. A new vegetable at the market or the mechanics under the hood of the car become learning opportunities. These little things have meaning. While not fully understood at two or politics at ten, the interaction does teach children that the things around them are connected in meaningful ways and helps children construct a framework for understanding the world. Finding meaning in the world is the essence of education. Purposeful interactions are central to learning. When children are exposed to this kind of interaction, learning becomes an enjoyable part of daily life.

It’s never too early or too late to become a “pointerouter,” helping your children make connections and find meaning in the world around them. So take a walk with your children this month, visit a museum, or even change the tire on the car together. Be purposeful in teaching your children about the world they interact with every day. Connect meaning to the things you encounter. In the process, you will enjoy learning and will grow together in your understanding of the marvelous world God created. Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County. With more than 30 years in Christian education, her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a love for God. She cherishes family time with her husband of 38 years, three children, and two grandchildren.

shows genuine compassion and is very thoughtful to others.” “My favorite aspect of being a teacher is the relationships I have the opportunity to build with the students and their families,” commented Ms. Stoop at the presentation. “When I talk about students, past or present I often refer to them as “my kids”, because I do feel that way. It’s really rewarding to have the kids call out your name when you walk into a room or insist on a hug before you leave for the day. Connections count, and I am so blessed that, this is part of what I am called to do every day!” Amanda comes from a long line of educators. “My mother has been a school teacher my entire life,” Amanda told us. “I grew up admiring her, and the art of teaching. From a young age I wanted to be a teacher; however, as I got older I also recognized just how tough, and important of a job educating another generation was. After several years of wondering what to do, God

www.gulfcoastfamily.org

stirred in me a passion for teaching and it was then that I decided to return to school for my teaching certificate— and I haven’t regretted it one bit!” Teaching though is not just Amanda’s job, but it is her passion. “Amanda’s dedication to teaching has been a great asset to our program,” Preschool Director Jessica Miller told us. “And because she is so passionate in her

teaching, her students and their families have a real heart and appreciation for her.” It is easy to see where her passion comes from. Just listen to what some of the parents and her colleagues had to say about their favorite teacher. “Amanda’s love for everyone she works with is evident in everything she does,” one of her colleagues told us. “She has taught the kids not only letters and numbers, but also how to love, respect and honor others.” As Kellin Girard, one of the parents, puts it, “It is so evident how much she truly cares about her students. She has been such a blessing for our son, Jackson. His attitude towards school has changed for the better since being in Ms. Amanda’s class—so much so that he now runs across the courtyard in the mornings to greet her with a hug.” One of the kids, who referred to Amanda as an “awesome teacher,”

also noted that she is “super kind and caring.” Another student commented how Ms. Stoop is always “very friendly and nice and she is always smiling.” One child summed it up this way, “Ms. Stoop gives the best hugs!” Love is certainly a high priority for this teacher and it shows. “My life verse is 1 Corinthians 16:14—Let all that you do be done in love. This is something I try to focus on in my daily life and in the classroom. And not only during the month of February, but all year long.”

February 2017 • 31

Along with being a teacher, Amanda is also a very busy wife, and a mother to two daughters. Amanda is also very passionate about being a student

herself. She is currently taking several additional college classes and she is only a month away from getting her Director’s Credentials. “I am both honored and humbled at the nomination and thank each one of the staff at Loving Arms, as well as the families I work with for making me the teacher that I am today. I could not do what I do without the awesome support of the staff and especially Rachel Backus, our “morning assistant” who is more like my right hand. I am really blessed beyond measure to work with her every day.”

The highlight of this teacher’s school year, “seeing every child’s accomplishments and their growth,” is the direct result of Ms. Stoop’s way of making learning fun and the character she exhibits in the classroom. No wonder your students, parents, and colleagues love you so much, Amanda! We are pleased to honor you as our February Teacher of the Month. with Jim Daly Q: Every time I turn around, there’s another example in the news or on social media about people fighting over issues of race, politics, religion, moral beliefs, etc. I’m beginning to lose hope that there can ever be peace in our land. What are your thoughts? Jim: It’s clear that America is deeply divided, on many fronts. But a lot of that conflict is driven by an idea that’s fundamentally untrue: the perception that disagreeing with someone means you disrespect them as a person—or even hate them. It doesn’t have to be that way. Beliefs can be polarizing. But differing perspectives don’t have to cause us to lose our sense of dignity for one another. That means we can vigorously defend what we believe, but we can do it with civility and respect. The key is grasping and applying a core value that’s guided our nation for over two centuries: a person’s value is the result of qualities beyond what we see at first glance. This is why my Christian faith emphasizes the profound worth of every human being. People don’t deserve dignity because they’re the right height, shape, color, political

LEARNING TO BE CIVIL IN A DISAGREEABLE SOCIETY

persuasion or any other label. All human beings have immeasurable worth simply because it’s endowed them by their Creator. Our conversations about societal issues have to start— and continue—in that context. And it works. Some of the people I consider to be my friends are activists who fight for ideas that directly oppose my deeply held beliefs. We disagree over almost every political and social issue. But we’ve still been able to build genuine friendships, because we show one another respect even though we hold radically differing opinions. None of us believes our opposing views have to turn into animosity or hatred toward one another. That civility allows us to find common ground.

WHAT CONSTITUES ACCEPTABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE FILMS

simple questions to always ask (and train your daughter to always ask).

Q: Our 14-year-old daughter was invited to an overnight video marathon at a friend’s house. The plan was to binge-watch a series of horror films that we wouldn’t ordinarily view in our household. We chose to not let our daughter attend. But when I spoke with the friend’s mom, her reply was “Whatever—it’s only a movie.” Do you think we were too restrictive? Bob Waliszewski, Director, Plugged In: I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the horror film genre or its recent spin-off commonly called torture porn. Because of that, it would be easy for me to quickly answer your question with a “you did the right thing—case closed.” But the question is best answered in a bigger context of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable films. I like to boil down the “in-bounds vs. out-of-bounds” dilemma to a few

Changing

The first is this: Will watching this film (or watching this TV show, listening to this song, playing this video game) make me a better person? Will it encourage me to be more honest, compassionate, generous and noble? Will it challenge me to care about others more, make a greater difference in this world, and better respond to life’s trials? If the answer to the above questions is yes, there’s still another factor to consider. Even if the film is inspiring, encouraging and uplifting overall, does it contain some content that would be counterproductive to my overall mental/ spiritual health? I say all this because it’s arguable that a few “horror” movies might fit the bill. But again, the place to start is not just films of this type, but to put all movies—no matter the genre—to the tests above. PluggedIn.com provides detailed content reviews to help you with this process.

True love is something quite different. Love is patient and understanding. And, yes, love can be hard. It sacrifices for someone else and chooses to stay with them in spite of their faults. Instead of running away, love faces challenges head on, so it can break through to something richer and more meaningful. As one person put it, love is “seeing the darkness in another person, yet resisting the impulse to jump ship.” Very few things in life are as enriching as true intimacy in marriage. The path to authentic, soul-fulfilling intimacy in a relationship isn’t always strewn with rose petals; sometimes there are a few thorns along the way. But it’s definitely worth the work.

INDEPENDENCE

LEARNING

I think part of the answer lies in what we expect from relationships. The primary reason we’re attracted to people is because of the way they make us feel. Now, I want as much as anyone to experience good feelings in my marriage. But superficial emotions like that aren’t enough of a foundation to sustain a relationship or to create deep, fulfilling intimacy. That’s because as soon as the good feelings disappear, so does the person’s commitment to the relationship. It’s why people abandon friendships. And it’s why people give up on marriages.

Jim: Every couple wants a loving marriage that’ll endure for the long haul. So it’s worth asking, “Why do so few relationships seem to actually experience that kind of genuine intimacy?”

with Jim Daly

DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN WITH YOUR KIDS Q: Our family schedule is pretty crazy, and it seems like we’re all just getting busier. We’re trying to make changes, but meanwhile I’m concerned about staying connected with our children in what little “free time” we have. What do you suggest? Jim: Parenting can certainly be challenging, and it’s easy to let the serious business fill every hollow. But sometimes you just have to know when to be playful. I’ll share a personal example. I came home from work one day just as my boys came dragging into the house from the backyard. Troy was limping and Trent had a black and blue mark emerging on his chin. “What happened?” I asked. Troy said, “Don’t jump on the trampoline with Mom. She landed on my ankle.” Then Trent said, “Her knee cracked me right in the jaw.”

Obviously, that playtime didn’t go so well, but believe it or not, it did have a positive outcome. First, it was a moment we all still laugh about. But more importantly, Jean’s playfulness drew the boys closer to her. The bum ankle and sore jaw are long forgotten, but my boys will always remember their mom taking time out of her busy schedule to play with them. That’s a great reminder for every parent. The pressures of adult life can make us a little too serious sometimes. Be playful. Play board games, wrestle on the floor, throw the ball around. Find something your children like to do and join them. It’ll deepen your relationship with them, and they’ll see you as more than a disciplinarian or someone who cooks dinner and does the laundry. They’ll see you as someone who really enjoys spending time with them whenever you can. And to a child, that equals feeling loved.

HOW TO HANDLE A TODLER TANTRUM Q: I’m a first-time parent, and my son is just getting to the “toddler tantrum” stage. I’m a bit overwhelmed— how do I handle these episodes? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: That may depend on the reason for the tantrum. Is your child hungry or tired? If so, offering a snack or a nap may be all it takes to nip a tantrum in the bud. However, if your child is frustrated over not getting his way, the best thing to do is ignore the outburst. The last thing you want to do is give in or drop everything in an effort to appease your little one. This will teach him that negative behavior pays off.

Once your child does calm down, explain that screaming won’t work and that you need him to use words. If the tantrum continues, however, you may need to use a time-out. Place your toddler somewhere without toys or entertainment, and wait for him to quiet down before allowing him to rejoin the family. It can also be helpful to identify those triggers that set your child off. If, for instance, your toddler tends to throw a fit when it’s time to leave a fun setting, prepare him in advance. A five-minute warning can go a long way toward heading off a tantrum. Finally, remember that toddler temper tantrums are perfectly normal. And, if they’re handled correctly, your child will soon learn healthier ways to express emotions. For more ideas about raising young children, visit FocusOnTheFamily.com.

Surrounded on all sides by a culture that centers on self, it is refreshing to meet a person who is all about everyone else but themselves. Non-profit organizations rely on such individuals to help them function at their greatest potential. They are greeters for special events, servers on the food line, and shelf books libraries. They read aloud to others, push someone in their wheelchair, or simply stuff envelopes in an office. Their roles are endless. At Indian Rocks Christian School we were blessed with such an individual. Her name, Irma Akers, aka the “queen of glitter, glue and the copier.” Her role, supporting the Kindergarten and first grade teams. Miss Irma, as the students called her, was an icon in the first grade hallway. Anyone that walked through was greeted by Miss Irma.

Every morning, for fourteen years, she would drop off her grandchildren, park her car, and take her place in the hallway right through dismissal. She was known to help every elementary grade level. Once a month she would get her fingers covered in newspaper ink sorting out this very paper to be delivered to each of the classrooms. In January, Irma Akers went home to be with the Lord. She lost a quick and furious battle with cancer. At first, doctors thought she had pneumonia, but that did not hold her back. One day I walked out my back door into her hallway and there she was cutting and gluing. When I confronted her she responded “I can sit at home or I can sit here and help get my work done”. Her dedication to others, in this case Indian Rocks Christian School, was amazing.

I would never expect anyone to volunteer at the level in which Miss Irma did. It’s going to take quite a few volunteers to fill the role of Miss Irma. But hopefully I have pricked your heart by telling you about Irma Akers. The Bible instructs us that “each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace…” Miss Irma fulfilled these words. She will always be the queen of glitter, glue and the copier. At Irma’s celebration of life service I was asked why I thought the Lord called Miss Irma home. My response, “the Lord must have had something that needed some glitter.” There is a big hole in our hallway, just like there is in many non-profits throughout Pinellas County. I implore you, volunteer. Step out of your com-

“Miss Irma” fort zone. Learn how to bring some sparkle to your favorite non-profit. They are not able to truly serve well without you, the volunteer. Timothy M Rhine, M.Ed. Indian Rocks Christian School Elementary Principal

Take Me Out to the Spring training gets into full swing in February here in Florida, and for families who have a passion for our national pastime, spring training is the ideal time to see your favorite players at their pre-season best – having fun, willing to sign autographs and open to mingling with the fans. At Spring Training, you can watch players like Evan Longoria and Miguel Cabrera take morning batting practice in settings so intimate it feels as if they could just as easily be at your neighborhood ball field. As any true fan of baseball will tell you, Spring Training is not just about the game, it’s about the experience. Here are some tips to ensure that you

38 • February 2017

and your family have an enjoyable day at the ballpark. • Bring your glove: Arrive at the park for morning workouts about 10am and you’ll see balls flying out into the parking lot. • Say cheese!: Spring Training is jam packed with Kodak moments, so have your camera ready. • Autograph please? Bring a couple new Sharpies and maybe a extra ball or two. The best opportunities are after morning workouts from about 10 to 11 a.m.

Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper

• Get good seats: Spring Training ballparks are much smaller than their major league counterparts, so nearly every seat seems close to the field. • Plan for the weather: Remember to always WEAR SUNSCREEN. Don’t make the mistake that so many sun-seeking Midwesterners do. • Relax!: The absolute best part about a family spring training trip is the simplicity of it. This February and March, make it a point to take the family to a Spring Training ballgame and just maybe, you’ll start a fun new tradition. Of course, be prepared. Once might not be enough as the kids will be begging to go to more games.
