me that she has a shopping list prepared and about 5 or 6 YouTube videos that I need to watch in order to get ready. It’s getting serious! So the first thing on her list was a Twister game. Simple enough—I think I can handle that, although I’ll probably not be playing it personally.
“ Oh, it’s to put colored My soon-to-be-13-year-old, Hanna, has been planning her birthday party for the better part of the year since her last one. But with the month now arriving, she’s really ramped up that planning in the last few days. I’ve known for months now that Hanna wants to have a sleepover capped off with a tray of Chick-n-Minis from Chick-fil-A for breakfast. But tonight, she informed
whipped cream on the Twister circles and make them slippery!
”
Next was some whipped cream and food coloring. What is that for? Oh, it’s to put colored whipped cream on the Twister circles and make them slippery! And if I’m not going to get that (or shaving cream was suggested as an alternative), then she just doesn’t want a boring old Twister game! The supplies for the next few games sounded harmless enough—poster board with candy-filled bal-
loons and darts, some creative-type games, pin the poop emoji in the toilet, etc. There were a handful of decorations, and of course the Chickn-Minis (along with Chicken Biscuits and a Fruit Tray) made the list, which I was fully expecting. Then came the supplies for the “s’more” birthday cake she wants—typical ingredients for a chocolate cake, graham crackers, marshmallow cream, and, of course, a blow torch. Now I am positive that Hanna’s older brothers would absolutely love to play with a blow torch in the kitchen, but I think we’re going to figure out how to toast that marshmallow cream with the broiler instead! Until next time,
Jennifer

Children’s Gasparilla Extravaganza January 21
What started as a grassroots labor of love from publishers Kristen Chase and Liz Gumbinner in 2006 has grown into one of the hottest gear, style, and design sites on the web for parents. And a lot of non-parents too. Kristen and Liz are often featured in national and local media discussing parenting trends, gift ideas, tech and internet safety, mom-run businesses, and online shopping.
The Children’s Gasparilla Extravaganza and Parade has been a part of Tampa’s Gasparilla celebration since 1947. The Children’s Gasparilla Parade takes place along beautiful Bayshore Boulevard and uses part of the same route as the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates. In past years, the Children’s Gasparilla Parade included over 100 units, including marching bands, dance units, school organizations, local neighborhood associations and a lot more. 10 Family Resolutions to Keep Next Year The beginning of a new year carries with it the inevitable looking back paired with the hope of a fresh start and second (or third) chances. As the clock moves ever closer to midnight on December 31st, we feel the need to promise to do better than we did last year. We resolve to lose weight, to be on time, to be better with our money…to stop smoking or drinking or swearing. By the time January 31st rolls around, many of us have had a relapse in our resolve. Part of the reason that we fail to keep these resolutions is that we attempt to tackle them on our own. So, this year, instead of making an individual promise that you’ll soon forget, why not make some resolutions as a family? You help hold each other accountable and can grow closer in the process. All Pro Dad would like to suggest 10 Family Resolutions to Keep Next Year. 1 A Weekly Family Game Night. Take a trip to the local bowling alley for a game. Or pile up the board games on the dining room table and have a tournament. The act of playing together fosters feelings of fun and family. Playing board games can teach children important social skills such as taking turns and how to be a good winner or loser. They also learn a lot about interpersonal communication as you talk and laugh together while you play the game. 2 Commit to One Healthy Eating Change. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different color vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking, or skipping sodas altogether. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet.
3 Turn off the TV. Television is a wonderful invention and not bad in and of itself, but in many homes, we use the TV as a buffer from communication. So, turn it off when you’re eating meals together. If you’re really feeling adventurous, try going without television one night a week. Who knows, you might discover that you don’t miss it at all. So take the plunge and try not watching TV. 4 Eat Dinner as a Family. Sharing a meal together, breakfast, lunch or dinner, is one way a family builds its identity and culture. Stories are shared, jokes are told, and family values are instilled. The act of coming together for a common meal teaches the importance of sharing and compromise, and helps younger members of the family understand problem solving and listening skills. 5 Be Quick to Apologize and Quick to Forgive. Let’s face it—we all mess up. When you mess up, be quick to apologize. When it’s your turn to be hurt, be quick to forgive. Forgiveness is good for your body, your relationships, and your place in the world. That’s reason enough. 6 Exercise Together. This resolution works well with #1 – 4. You could have a game of tennis, or miniature golf. Get out in the yard and play ball! Point out your end zones and have a game of scrimmage. Don’t have a football? Toss a Frisbee. The whole idea is to get outside and do something you and your family will enjoy.
AllProDad.com
7 Revisit your Childhood. Get down on the ground and roll around with your kids. Build a fort in the family room with couch cushions and sheets. Tell knock-knock jokes to each other. Just because you’re a grown-up, doesn’t mean you can’t be silly and have imaginative fun with the kids. In those moments of silliness, you can have serious bonding and build bridges for heart-felt communication. 8 Do Something New as a Family. Routine is a great thing when it comes to families, but that doesn’t mean to have to get stuck in a rut. Make a point to do something new as a family. Doing something new together will give you a common memory…so get out there and get adventurous together. 9 Make each Child Feel Special. It’s great to do things as a family unit, but it’s equally important to celebrate the individuality of your kids. Make a resolution to do something once a month with each of your children. Do something together that will make them feel special and valued. 10 Nurture your Relationship with your Wife. The best thing you can do for your children is to nurture your relationship with your wife. When your kids know that you value your wife as your first priority, they have a feeling of security and love that’s nearly unshakeable. Make a point to put that relationship first, and your family will benefit.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” – Mother Teresa I know I am guilty of becoming busy and not showing my wife, Lauren, how much I love and appreciate her. She knows I do and I could easily rely on that. The problem is that love requires more. It takes active thought and action. Particularly when I am traveling and have a heavy workload, I can get caught up in my own world. It’s an easy way for feelings to get hurt and our marriage to get off track. Just like in football, when you get off track, it’s important to focus on the fundamentals. Each person receives love differently. It’s important for us to know what makes our wives feel loved and cared for. There are a couple of things I know my wife enjoys. These may seem small and simple. But the point is doing them with consistency and with intentional love. That is what makes all the difference. Here are 3 ways I love my wife.
1. DINNER OUT
It’s not hard or particularly creative, but it gives us time together. Our kids and work demand a lot of our attention. We also tend to be in crowds a lot so having a meal together gives us quality time alone where we can talk. It gets us back on the same page.
2. WALKS Enrichment in
S.T.E.M.
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education.
3. WRITTEN NOTES
SACS ACCREDITED
This is something I should do more often. My wife loves written notes. Whether I am on the road or at home, when I write down my feelings for her it makes her feel special. It is also something that she can save and pull out and read at any time. Writing notes, taking walks, and dinner out are the things she loves more than anything. Well, jewelry works too!

The day can be hectic and, by the end, we are usually tired. But when the kids go to bed, taking a walk around the neighborhood is a great way to connect. My wife and I enjoy hearing about each other’s day. It is a relaxing way to unwind.
There are probably two or three things that your wife loves. Things that make her feel loved and appreciated. They are probably small, everyday things. What are they? When is the last time you’ve done them for her? It may be time to get back to the fundamentals.

Our kids love parties and, even if the party is for mom and dad to watch a big game, they love to feel a part of all of the excitement. Having them help with the food preparation is a great way to help them get involved. This Seven-Layer Bean Dip is a simple appetizer that your kids will have a blast helping to prepare. The Mexican dip is very easy to make, is fairly healthy, tastes great, and looks nice in a party setting! Also the individual serving cups are great at helping to stop the “double dippers.”
Individual 7-layer Bean Dip • 15-ounce can refried beans • 16-ounce container sour cream • 16-ounce container guacamole
• 8 ounces salsa • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
• Shredded lettuce • Chopped tomato
1. Warm beans slightly in microwave until soft, not hot (about 30 seconds). Spread ¼ cup into the bottom of 8 clear plastic cups. 2. Spread ¼ cup each of sour cream and guacamole over beans. 3. Spoon 2 tablespoons salsa over guacamole. 4. Top with cheese, lettuce, and tomato. 5. Serve with tortilla chips.

I read a blog post from husband and wife team Danielle and Astro Teller recently that struck a chord with me. It said that, “Sometime between when we were children and when we had children of our own, parenthood became a religion in America.” They went on to point out that, like many religions, parenthood has been elevated to a place of wholehearted devotion and sacrifice that can’t be questioned. To do so is to risk being labeled a heretic. The number one casualty of our new form of worship? American marriages. If you’ve fallen victim to the parenting as a religion mind-set, it may be time to get your house in order. Hear me out on this: Parenting is a high calling. Our children are blessings, and we should give them our best. But modern American parenting often elevates caring for and providing for our children to an unhealthy level that is damaging to our marriages and (get this!) actually hurts our kids. By more or less worshiping them during the formative years, we distort our kids’ perceptions of themselves and their place in the world. And then, when our little idols up and leave, we’re left with a spouse we barely know in a home that loses all meaning without children. Ask yourself these five questions to see if you’ve turned parenting into a religion and if it’s silently damaging your marriage.

1. Do I treat my marriage as the primary and most important relationship in my life? Aside from your relationship with God, your marriage should be number one. And, while lots of parents can agree with that idea in theory, the way they live out daily life doesn’t validate it. The needs/desires of the kids always come first — over the needs of the spouse or marriage relationship. We understand that younger children especially need you more much of the time. But be honest: Is your spouse perpetually holding the runner-up trophy?
2. Do I disapprove of couples who occasionally steal a weekend or a vacation without the kids? I was having a conversation with another mom a few years ago about a third couple when she remarked, knowingly, “They’re the kind of people who go on trips and leave their kids at home with the grandparents.”
www.gulfcoastfamily.org
What kind of people are those I wondered? People who still like each other? People who don’t think their kids are so fragile they will crumble in the care of loving friends and family for a few days? “We’re those kind of people, too,” I told her, with a smile. Conversation over.
3. When I do get time alone with my husband, do I struggle to find things to talk about? Having every corner of your marriage invested in parenting can leave a couple with little else to connect over. {Tweet This} If you have absolutely nothing to say to one another (besides discussing the kids) when you’re alone, you may have succumbed to “children as the center of the universe” syndrome. Try making a loose rule that date night is for talking about other things and remember that he was an interesting person before he was a daddy.
To advertise, call 727-612-0783
4. Do my children exhibit signs of feeling entitled to my constant attention? If your kids have a meltdown when you leave for a date night or refuse to back up and out of the room when you say you want to talk to daddy alone for a while, it’s possible that you’ve created the monster by conditioning them to think they are entitled to your total focus all the time. You can restore balance in their thinking, but it will have to be intentional on your part.
5. Do I feel like a failure if work or other responsibilities take me away from my kids’ activities? We understand that there’s a tension here. It’s entirely possible to be too devoted to your career to the detriment of your children. But on the flip side, a mom or dad who comes to most all of the games or performances your child participates in, but has to miss a few to take care of professional or volunteer commitments, is not a bad parent. Your job is what enables you to feed, clothe, and educate your children. There are other real needs in your community where your help is needed. By taking a balanced approach, you’re teaching your children that a life well lived encompasses a lot of different things.

Parenting is for the Birds by Candace MacDowall Did you know the mother bird diligently prepares her nest before she lays her eggs? She makes the nest sturdy from wind and weather with twigs, leaves,
Candace MacDowall is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at WebbRauckhorst Counseling. She specializes in therapy with adolescents and children.
bits of string and grass, and any other debris she can that will create a ready and safe home for the baby birds. Imagine! This she does by instinct, imprinted by God-given traits, to perpetuate the species. When a female bird lays her eggs, her primary role is to nurture warmth and presence by cuddling the new eggs under her own feathered body until they hatch. Once hatched, mother bird feeds and cares for them. Why? To prepare them to leave the nest, a time that only she is programmed to know. Leaving mother’s nest to fly on their own is the main goal. She must care for them for preparation to fly AWAY from her and fend for themselves! Perhaps we parents can benefit from this simple and primary principle. As soon as a child is born, parents actually begin to nurture them for one goal: to leave the home nest, well prepared to be follow
values and skills taught diligently by mother and father in accordance with God’s commands and precepts. According to Proverbs 6:20-22, “keep your father’s God-given commandment…. and forsake not the law of God your mother taught you… bind them upon your heart and tie them about your neck,…. and when you go, the words of your parents’ God shall lead you, when you sleep… keep you when you wake, and talk with you….” This awesome responsibility must be learned; it is not instinctual for humans as it is for birds! We mothers and fathers carry the pattern our parents raised us in, whether good or bad. Preparing a home for children often requires knowledge and remembrance of what needs to be understood from our own childhood experience with our own parents. The ability to relate selflessly to a dependent infant is not a simple task,
and all parents have vulnerabilities and unmet needs from less-than-perfect role models! We can search out resources to improve our own perception of how to care and nurture the children and learn how to properly teach the babies entrusted to our care. We can learn to truly prepare our children to leave the nest with confidence. What an honor for a parent to look forward to in this coming New Year! May this New Year bring you a renewed hope as you face the challenge of parenting your children. Parenting isn’t only for the birds, it is our most significant and eternal role to cherish.

Ask the Veterinarian
New Year’s Resolutions for You and your Pet By Caterine Wendt, DVM New years are always about making resolutions to improve oneself and your pet may be a good motivator for you and enjoy the benefits of getting fit just as you will. About 80% of the American population does not get regular exercise with over 50% of the population is now considered Obese. The rise of obesity in Americans correlates with obesity in the pet population especially since owners mostly cannot judge their pet’s Body Condition Score (BCS). The BCS is a chart from 1 to 9 in dogs and cats with lower numbers indicating an underweight pet, with numbers 4 and 5 indicating ideal weight, and anything from 6-9 indicating an overweight pet. Numbers on a scale cannot be relied upon in the pet world and that is why a body condition score is much more reliable than exact pounds. A study showed over 70% of owners in a study rated their pet’s body condition score (BCS) as much lower than it was when compared to a Veterinarian who objectively measured the pet’s BCS. This means that most Americans have no idea that their pet are overweight. There are graphics that illustrate these BCS charts but you can also use the Knuckle test as a simpler way to understand your pet’s body condition. Basically, if your pet is too thin, then the ribs will be visible and will feel like
the top of your knuckles when your hand makes a fist. A pet who has an ideal body condition will feel like your knuckles when your hand is flat, palm down. An overweight pet’s ribs will feel like your knuckles when felt from the palm aspect of your open hand. There are many different reasons for a pet to be overweight other than being under-exercised and overfed with dog food and/or human foods. Regular exercise and cutting calories and treats are always a good way to start but if you are not being successful at decreasing your pet’s weight to an ideal body condition then you should partner with your Veterinarian who can help you with more specific recommendations based on your specific pet’s situation. Overweight pets, like people, are more likely to have chronic disease such as diabetes, arthritis, and other underlying chronic conditions. For example, hypothyroidism can be common and there is an easy 15 minute blood test that will tell you yes or no and the treatment is simple and your pet will show new life usually along with a better coat. Arthritis may keep your pet from wanting or being able to exercise and we can control pain and use prescription diets that are formulated for weight loss and have joint supplements included them. Some breeds are especially prone to becoming obese includ-
ing, but not limited to, Bulldogs, Pugs, Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Beagles, Labs, and almost all house cats. Unless you’re preparing for a specific event such as running a marathon or playing a specific sport, 30 minutes of walking a day is recommended by the National Academy of Sports Medicine for a healthier lifestyle with a multitude of benefits comparable to spending two to three hours in a gym three times a week.
We at EZ Vet want to you wish you the best in the new year and please feel free to contact us if you would like a consultation with Dr. Wendt.
Pet Body Condition Score (BCS) Lightly run your fingers over your knuckles as you make a fist. If you imagine those knuckles were your dog/cat’s ribs, this would be too thin. Put your palm up, fingers extended facing the ceiling. Run your fingers over the base of your fingers—this is too heavy. Turn your hand over, palm down and feel over your knuckles. When your pet’s ribs feel like this, it’s just right— healthy lean BCS 5/9! www.gulfcoastfamily.org

The answer is that it’s not just about time management. It’s about “Energy Management.” You can accomplish more when you are energized. Your brain can prioritize better when it is energized. Another Red Bull is not the answer, however. Compare energy management with the recipe for an amazing meal. It will not turn out like you hoped if you skimp or shortcut the process. Your body will not give you what you need if you do the same. Here is where most people struggle. They do not know the right recipe for how to have abundant energy. Let’s cover a few choices.
by Nicole Dennison, Certified Life and Health Coach
Choose the right vitamins: It is very difficult to get all the nutrients we need directly from our food, so instead having the right combination of supplements can make all the difference in the world. Supplementation will give your body what it lacks so you can get your day accomplished easier, and with energy to spare. To help you even more so with energy and time management, next month’s topic is Fast Food Eating: Tips to Eat Healthy, Yet Fast.
Choose the right food: Physical energy is derived from assimilated nutrients. Organic vs. non-Organic, GMO vs. Non-GMO and packaged vs. fresh raise questions. The best answer for creating sustained energy is to go with fresh food that has not been scientifically tampered with or sprayed with toxic chemicals. Choose the right drinks: Sometimes when the body feels hungry or tired, it is thirsty. Try drinking 12 ounces of water when you feel a dip in energy. Soda, coffee and ‘energy drinks’ will give you an unhealthy temporary high. Sustained energy will happen with smart drinks like protein smoothies and vitamin infused water. Nicole Dennison is a Certified Life and Holistic Health Coach and the founder of Change the Course Coaching. She invites readers of Gulf Coast Family Magazine to accept her offer of a free 30-minute phone consultation to learn tips on how to have more energy and how to custom design the right nutritional supplementation plan. Recipients of her 30 minute consultation will receive a free casserole & quick meal recipe guide. Florida Continues to Close the Achievement Gap as Graduation Rates Jump to 13-year High Statewide rate increased by 2.8 percentage points since last year Once again, Florida’s high school graduation rate has risen, according to data released today by the Florida Department of Education. For 2015-16, Florida’s statewide graduation rate climbed to 80.7 percent, an increase of 21.5 percentage points since 2003-04 and 2.8 percentage points over last year. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said, “Today’s news is cause for celebration! I am proud of Florida’s students for their outstanding achievement, even as the bar has been steadily raised. These results are a testament to their hard work and the benefit of Florida’s accountability system, which hinges on transparency and rewards progress every step of the way.”
Florida’s Graduation Rates, 2003-04 through 2015-16
In recent years, Florida’s education leaders have focused their efforts on ensuring all students have the resources necessary to succeed, and the newly released data demonstrates that the attention to the performance of individual subgroups has had a significantly positive effect. Since the 2011-2012, Florida has seen a significant uptick in the graduation rates for all reported race/ethnicity groups. The subgroups with the highest percentage point increase in that time are as follows: • The statewide graduation rate among all students increased by 6.2 percentage points over the last five years, rising from 74.5 percent in 2011-12 to 80.7 percent in 2015-16. • The statewide graduation rate among African American students increased by 8.6 percentage points over the last five years, rising from 63.7 percent in 2011-12 to 72.3 percent in 2015-16. • The statewide graduation rate among Hispanic students increased by 6.5 percentage points over the last five years, rising from 73.0 percent in 2011-12 to 79.5 percent in 2015-16. • The statewide graduation rate among students with disabilities increased by 13.8 percentage points, rising from 47.8 percent in 2011-12 to 61.6 percent in 2015-16. • The statewide graduation rate among economically disadvantaged students increased by 9.3 percentage points, rising from 65.1 percent in 2011-12 to 74.4 percent in 2015-16.
About Florida’s Graduation Rates, 2003-04 through 2015-16 The graduation rate measures the percentage of students who graduate within four years of their first enrollment in ninth grade. The rate is calculated for an adjusted cohort of students – a group of students on the same schedule to graduate – taking into account those who enter or exit the group. Florida’s graduation rate only considers standard diploma recipients as graduates in the calculation. Students who earn a special diploma, a GED-based diploma, a certificate of completion, or have been retained and are still in school after four years are counted as non-completers in the calculation. Florida’s graduation rate has risen by 6.2 percentage points since 2011-12 and 21.5 percentage points since 2003-04. Florida’s graduation rate is 80.7 percent, but that does not mean that 19.3 percent of students in the cohort are dropouts. Nongraduates include students who have been retained and are still in school, received certificates of completion or received GEDbased diplomas. In Florida’s 2015-16 cohort, 3.8 percent of the students dropped out and 15.5 percent are still enrolled in school, earned a certificate of completion, special diploma or GED-based diploma.

Most of us want to give our children the best possible start in life, and that includes a solid education. However it has been said that the average family spends far more time evaluating appliances and automobiles then it does appraising the quality of their children’s schools. With choices ranging from traditional parochial and private schools to new pilot and charter schools, there are a multitude of choices for families to examine. So as parents we need to take the time to explore and investigate all of the options for our children. If you are among parents who are out looking at private school options, we hope that the following list of questions will be a help to you as you visit with school administrators and visit open house events.
PPA is a high performing, tuition free, public charter school for highly motivated students in grades K-8. Our highly trained, award winning teachers offer a private school education in a family atmosphere.

Why Your Child Should Get the Flu Vaccine by Charles A. Welborn, MD, MPH, FAAP, FACEP Medical Director, After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care
Flu season is here, and parents tend to respond to it in two ways. One is to follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics and many other health care organizations, and have their children vaccinated. The second is to ignore the recommendations and ‘chance’ their children will not get the flu. Let’s look at some of the reasons why parents feel they shouldn’t vaccinate their children against the flu. First, many parents feel the vaccine doesn’t work well – they always know people who get the flu, even though they received the vaccine. While it is true that the vaccine is not 100% effective, it does protect people the majority of the time. The vaccine immunizes against three different types of flu, so if you are exposed to a different type of flu than what is in the vaccine, you may still get the flu. Also, the vaccine is most effective in healthy adults and older children whose immune systems respond well to the vaccination. In young children, older adults and those with chronic illness, the vaccine still works, but is not effective as in a healthy adolescent or adult.

Second, many parents feel the vaccine is dangerous. While it is true that the rare person may have a serious reaction to the flu vaccine, the overwhelming majority of people receiving the vaccine experience only mild symptoms such as a low-grade fever and soreness at the injection site. These symptoms are the result of the body’s immune system responding to the vaccine, and not anything dangerous. The severe reactions, such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome, are estimated to occur in only one person out of every million doses given. This rate is actually lower than what occurs naturally in people who do not receive the vaccine. Parents, read the flu vaccine information sheet so you are fully informed. Third, many parents think the flu is not a serious illness. While many cases of the flu do resemble a bad cold, the flu can lead to many complications, especially in small children and those with underlying chronic illness such as asthma, heart problems, diabetes, etc. The death rate in the United States can range from 3,000 to 49,000 people a year, primarily affecting small children, older adults, those with weakened immune systems and those with chronic health issues.

The bottom line is the best way to weather flu season is to get vaccinated. It is a safe and effective way to prevent the illness in your child and to keep it from spreading to others.

Finally, many parents feel if their child does get the flu, they can get a prescription for an antiviral medication (such as Tamiflu®). Actually, these medications are suggested for use only in children between the ages of one and two years, as well as for older children with chronic illness such as asthma, diabetes, heart conditions or immune problems. Therefore, most children do not meet the CDC guidelines for treatment with antiviral medications.

Plato Academy Trinity Groundbreaking Ceremony Plato Academy Trinity recently held a wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for their new permanent facilities. The celebration was well attended with over 100 people, including students, parents, teachers, administrators, and members of Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church, who will be co-tenants at the 8812 Old County Road 54 location in the Trinity area of Pasco County. The safe and secure modern facility will be over 50,000 square feet and specifically designed with Plato Academy students
in mind. It will include a playing field, playgrounds, and a sports pavilion. Also on the property will be a multipurpose space that will be jointly used by the church and the school. Mrs. Perez kicked off the event with some kind opening words and an introduction of the Greek choir and dance club which are composed of Plato Academy Trinity students and lead by Mr. Kokalidis. The students sang lively songs in Greek and English and per-
formed an inspired dance that earned big rounds of applause from the audience. Steve Christopoulos, founder of Plato Academy Schools and CEO of Superior Schools Corporation, gave the next speech, which focused on the importance of providing high quality, tuition free, publicly funded educational
options to families and the importance of building strong bonds with the community. Founding Plato Board Member, Chris Alahouzos, who is also the Mayor of Tarpon Springs, spoke about Plato Academy’s mission of serving students, helping them to excel and develop their full potential. The last speaker was Pastor Rita Gardner Tweed, of Spirit of Grace Youth Lutheran Church, talked about the aligned missions of Plato Academy and Spirit of Grace www.gulfcoastfamily.org

insofar as each entity seeks to serve the community and give people a place where they feel inspired to serve. Participants in the groundbreaking used 15 golden shovels to mark the beginning of work on the project and the grand finale included Mr. Christopoulos and Pastor Rita digging up huge piles of dirt with a bulldozer and an excavator. During refreshments afterwards, enthusiastic participants commented on feeling like they participated in a “chance of a lifetime” opportunity. After the adults shoveled, students were given the opportunity to do their own digging, doing their important part in celebrating the beginning of construction of a permanent facility for Pasco County’s first Plato Academy Charter School.

7 Ways to
Get Fit as a Family
Healthy eating habits and gym routines can be hard to keep up after the excitement of the holidays fizzle. For parents who juggle busy schedules, it can be particularly challenging to squeeze in the recommended amount of physical activity each day. However, with a little motivation and a dose of creativity, families can resolve to stay active and get fit together—without stepping foot into the gym. Here are seven ideas to consider:
Explore the neighborhood.
can increase risk of injury. To go easy on the wallet, consider shopping at retailers like Rack Room Shoes, which offers everyday value on brands for the entire family. For more information, visit RackRoomShoes.com.
Schedule dance parties.
Enjoy music and shake off some stress by scheduling regular dance parties after school, during commercial breaks or before bedtime.
Make a game out of chores.
Take the children on regular strolls around the block. Create your own nature walks by identifying different insects, leaves and animals along the way. Collect pinecones, acorns or other foliage that can be used for fun crafts back at the house.
Make the most of family chores. Shoveling snow, raking leaves and mowing the grass don’t just enhance your home’s curb appeal; they are all great forms of exercise!
Take advantage of local parks.
A routine ensures consistency. Set aside time each week for bike rides, tag football and soccer games, all of which can all be done in the neighborhood, backyard or at a favorite park. In bad weather, head to a local trampoline park, climbing gym or indoor soccer field.
Visit a local park to discover different walking paths or bike trails. And spend some time on the playground while you’re at it! Equipment, such as monkey bars, climbing walls and balance beams are all fun ways to get moving.
Get in a routine.

Make 2017 YOUR YEAR of Better Health! by Dr. Kelley Mulhern, Thrive! Chiropractic & Wellness, LLC
After the hustle-and-bustle of the highstress Holiday Season, many people reflect on their lives and their health. Did you meet your health goals in 2016, or are you still struggling to make your health a priority? People often set “resolutions” in January only to forget them by February. Better health takes consistent effort, but it doesn’t have to be hard. Let’s take a closer look at three areas you can work on to experience improved health in 2017: Physical health, mental/emotional health, and biochemical health. Physical health can be thought of as how we use – or don’t use – our bodies. Are you getting adequate and appropriate exercise? Do you have good posture? Are you sleeping soundly? Do you get your spine evaluated regularly? Many acute and chronic diseases are created or exacerbated by an improperly functioning nervous system. Do you
three aspects of health to reach their goals. We invite you to attend our free monthly “Wellness Wednesday” health talks – the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:15pm at our office. The January 18 talk is “Nutrition 101” and features certified Health & Nutrition Coach Vanessa Sardi of Nutriception ®.
obtain consistent body work (chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, etc.?) Your body is your machine, and it requires care and maintenance of its structure for optimal health. Mental/emotional health refers to our ability to handle stress, express our emotions, and defuse worry, guilt, and anxiety. Do you love – and like – yourself? Do you practice relaxation techniques (such as meditation or prayer) daily? What does your self-talk sound like? Unchecked mental and emotional stress causes a cascade of events in your body, all of which can promote disease and dys-function. Biochemical health encompasses everything we put into – or onto – our bodies. Are you eating fresh, local, organic, and non-GMO foods? Are you drinking plenty of water, and is it filtered to remove impurities? What kind of cleaning supplies do you use in your
home and on your body? Are you taking appropriate supplements in the right quantity? There’s so much mis-information about nutrition that it’s easy to become confused. Don’t let continued confusion impact your health!
You have a choice. You can stay on the path where health is a low priority, and continue to be tired and run down. Or you can make 2017 the year you choose to commit to better health in three dimensions – your future self and loved ones will thank you!
Lots of people decide to diet or exercise in January, but that only involves one aspect of health. For lasting change, we must work on all three areas of health at the same time. If you don’t feel you have the will-power or knowledge to do so, partner with someone who does. Our office helps people address all

Pop Culture’s Top Movers and Shakers (2016 Edition) by pluggedin.com Well, not every year can be a winner. For many of us, 2016 was a time we’d rather forget. Everyone seemed so angry this year. We saw it in the nearly interminable election cycle. We saw it in the constant barrage of protests and counter-protests. Why, the atmosphere was so explosive this year that even smartphones started blowing up. But it wasn’t all bad. The year had its share of good news, too. So with that, let’s take a look back at the folks who helped make 2016 the year that it was … and the folks who, at least, made it a bit more interesting. Brangelina: For more than a decade, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were Hollywood’s indisputable “it” couple. Fans followed their
relationship’s sordid beginnings, watched as they began adopting children and graced red carpet banquets. And then, just like that, it was over—the death of a relationship chronicled in salacious detail by tabloids and gossip sites. Many suggested that Brangelina’s end marked an end of an era, too. “Brangelina was formed before celebrities were doing their own social media,” author Vanessa
Díaz told The Atlantic. “It almost feels like this is the transition from the era of Brangelina to the era of Kimye. Kim [Kardashian] and Kanye [West] are talking to their consumers and fans differently, they’re talking to them directly through social media, and Brangelina has a kind of glamor and mystique that the newer couples don’t have because of the access that we have—or the illusion of access that we have.” Walt Disney: It’s true that Disney died more than 50 years ago. But the company he created dominated the movies this year like none other before. The House of Mouse owns the year’s top four worldwide movie moneymakers (No. 1 Captain America: Civil War, No. 2 Finding Dory, No. 3 Zootopia and No. 4 The Jungle Book). And keep in mind that another Disney film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is still charging up the year’s rankings and will likely give Disney a clean sweep of the Top Five before 2016’s box office books are closed. And let’s not forget that Doctor Strange and Moana, already sizable successes, are both still counting up their own box-office receipts. Now, if only Disney would reimburse its fans with free tickets to Disneyland…
Dragonite: I can’t say that this is a prime catch in the Pokémon Go universe, but my wife was certainly excited when she stumbled across it. For a few weeks this summer, Pokémon Go became a flat-out obsession for millions of casual gamers who experienced culture’s first real push into the world of augmented reality. The game was a, uh, game-changer, in that it pulled folks off the couch and got them walking, exploring and visiting places they might never have seen otherwise. Sure, most were still far more interested in what was happening inside their smartphones than in the real world, but still. Progress, right?

Dwayne Johnson: It’s not like Johnson’s the first former professional wrestler to try his luck in Hollywood. But he’s the first who became its king. In a cover story, Sports Illustrated called him “the biggest star in Hollywood,” and it’s hard to argue. Both of his movies this year— Central Intelligence and Moana—hit it big at the box office. He was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive!” for 2016. But while some people would point to the former Rock’s physique as the reason for his success, he owes just as much to his versatility. Even though he started out, and still is, one of the biggest action stars on the planet, he’s perhaps Hollywood’s go-to guy for kids’ movies. Central Intelligence was a comedy featuring flashbacks to Johnson’s supposed younger, geekier, flabbier days. And Johnson’s muscles weren’t on display at all in Moana; here, his voice did all the heavy lifting. Colin Kaepernick: A year ago, the 49ers quarterback’s career was all but over, and let’s face it: The guy still may not keep his
starting job. But no matter. By sitting during the National Anthem during an otherwise meaningless preseason game, Kaepernick became the face of a movement—a self-stated protest against discrimination and police brutality—and the controversial center of a national discussion. Football players around the league (and in high school and college, too) began taking knees. Sports journalists spent more time talking with him about the day’s explosive issues than football. And while his kind words for Fidel Castro and his failure to vote alienated some of even his more vocal supporters, there’s no question that Kaepernick reminded us all that celebrities can influence and even drive important conversations. Palmer Luckey: In tech circles, 2016 may be remembered as the year that virtual reality officially became a thing. And for that, society must tip its hat to Palmer Luckey. The 24-year-old designed an early version of the Oculus Rift, a VR head display that started the tech world buzzing a few years ago. Soon he launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his dream—a campaign that
went on to collect $2.4 million, 10 times what he was asking for. And even though many believe that VR technology is nothing more than a gimmick for now, that hasn’t stopped the Oculus Rift and other VR headsets (from the $799 HTC Vive to the $15 Google Cardboard) from becoming musthave tech for many a first-adapter. Now, Luckey’s last name says it all: His net worth is estimated at around $700 million. But he still shares a house with a handful of other gaming enthusiasts.
in the world. The campaign itself marked, perhaps, a turning point in American politics. Sober policy statements took a back seat to inflammatory sound bites; debates were waged not so much on television as on Twitter. Many pundits said the 2016 election was more reality show than anything, and if so, the ratings were huuuuge. And even as many in America shook in their boots at the prospect of a Trump presidency, many others had just two words for the guy: “You’re hired!”
Donald Trump: Time’s Person of the Year makes our list, too, because how could he not? This former reality star parlayed his name recognition and knack for channeling voter outrage into what some would’ve termed a Quixotic campaign. But even as the world kept waiting for The Donald to fade and let the “real” politicians take over, Trump kept defeating his rivals until he claimed the most powerful job

TEACHING KIDS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMISSION AND RESPECT
Q: My teenage son keeps telling me that I don’t “respect” him as I should. I’ll admit that we often butt heads, but I honestly don’t believe that I’ve ever done anything to denigrate him as a person. What does it mean for a parent to “respect” a child? I can’t just let him have his own way all the time, can I?
• Listen completely before drawing conclusions or making decisions. Take as much time as this requires. Note: “Listening” doesn’t mean “agreeing.”
Jim: I understand. We have two teenagers in my house. Many teens make the mistake of equating respect with permission. They say, “If you respect me, you’ll let me.” But respect and permission are two very different things. You’re the parent, and your child needs to respect your authority and abide by your rules as long as he remains under your roof.
• Be consistent in your words, deeds, decisions, rules and choices. It’s hard for a teen to respect anyone who is inconsistent or hypocritical.
Respect is best defined as the act of giving a person the particular attention or special regard he deserves. It’s demonstrating that you consider him worthy of high esteem—even when he’s not reflecting it back to you. That can be hard. But here are some helpful hints:
• Trust is earned. Give your son as much freedom as he has shown he can handle. No more, no less. This can be a tough balancing act.
• Establish rules that are logical, fair, reasonable and truthful. Resist the temptation to make rules for your own convenience, or to satisfy a need for control. • Admit when he’s right and you’re wrong. Honesty is the backbone of mutual respect.
Q: My husband and I are trying to do regular date nights, but it seems like we always end up talking (even arguing) about problems at home instead of having fun and enjoying each other’s company. How can we keep our dates on track?
• Distinguish between behavior and character. It’s one thing to point out wrong actions, but be careful not to attack your child’s character in the process.
Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Many of us struggle with this, including my wife and me. It can be hard to carve out time for a date. So, once we’re together, issues that are top of mind tend to come up. Before you know it, what could have been an evening of fun and connection becomes an argument. By the end of the date, instead of emotionally connecting, husband and wife have drifted apart.
By doing these things consistently, you’ll show him respect—even though you won’t always “give in” to his requests. This balance of justice, guidance and respect will be a valuable example of how he should extend respect to you (and others) even when you don’t see eye to eye.
It’s important to avoid the temptation to “administrate” your marriage, rather than to enjoy one another’s company. Every marriage has real issues that need to be addressed from time to time. Maybe it’s discipline problems with kids, financial challenges or communication struggles. There’s a time and place to
• Never belittle or intentionally embarrass him— publicly or privately. No name-calling, even if you’re angry. Careless words hurt.

confront those challenges, but not on date nights. Keep your dates fun, exciting and conflict-free. The best way to do this is proactively plan your date night activities. Have specific things in mind to do, and keep
to the script. You might even think back “pre-marriage” to when you were first dating, and revisit some of your favorite conversations and memories. For more ideas and resources, see focusonthefamily.com/marriage/ dating-your-spouse.
ONE LIFE. ONE SHOT. MAKE IT COUNT.
RESOLVE TO LET GO OF REGRETS IN THE NEW YEAR Q: I’m sitting down to write out my New Year’s resolutions. Every year I struggle to keep up with my goals— and usually give up within a few weeks. Honestly, I feel completely saturated already; is it even worth trying to add something else to the list? Jim: I think there’s a lot to be said for setting a few reasonable goals and making the effort to attain them. It’s helpful if they’re measurable (like “exercise for 30 minutes three times a week”), and you can enlist someone to encourage you and help you keep on track. But I might also suggest making some “non-resolutions” for the year. Nonresolutions aren’t about what we decide to add to our lives. They’re about all the things we decide to leave behind. A non-resolution could be something like resolving not to look back too much on the negative events of the past year. Instead, forgive the people who have hurt you and choose to have a better outlook for what this year can
hold for you. Or, how about resolving not to get more engrossed in technology than you already are? Decide that this year you’re going to exchange your smartphone and text messages for more face-to-face communication and oneon-one time with your family. Here’s another one: Don’t let mistakes you’ve made over the past 12 months determine how the next 12 months will go. Don’t live in regret. Handle whatever consequences you may be facing, but shake off your poor choices and get on with your life. Learn from your mistakes and move forward.
PRIORITIZING FAMILY IN THE NEW YEAR Q: Looking ahead to a new year, my wife and I want to prioritize ways to strengthen our family. We’re trying to think of things that will help each of our four children feel more connected and secure. Where can we start? www.gulfcoastfamily.org
The taste of fresh espresso in Rome... The bustling streets of NYC... The hot Aussie sun on your back...
Living well is just as much about what you choose to leave behind as it is what you choose to add. It reminds me of the quote that says, “Our strength doesn’t come from desperately hanging on, but from gracefully letting go.” So as you think about your resolutions for this year, give some thought to a few nonresolutions as well. I wish you the best.

with Jim Daly Marriage is the foundation of the family. That’s why a husband and wife’s first priority should be the health of their relationship. As a matter of fact, family psychologist John Rosemond says that couples should spend 80 percent of their time strengthening their marriage, over and above the demands of their schedules or the needs of their children. If 80 percent sounds extreme to you, remember this: Your kids are only as safe and nurtured as your marriage. They’ll be most content when their parents’ relationship is solid.
TIPS ON HELPING ELDERLY PARENTS HANDLE THEIR FINANCES Q: My elderly mom is still living independently in her own home, but it’s clear that she’ll soon be unable to handle her finances and other business matters on her own. My siblings and I need to begin preparing for what’s to come. Do you have any suggestions? Jim: You’re wise to begin thinking about this while your mother is still able to participate in the process of providing for her own future. First, make sure that she is comfortable sharing personal information with you. If not, you may need to consider using a financial adviser, accountant or attorney as a neutral third party to facilitate the necessary discussions about her finances.
Beyond that, both Mom and Dad should make the effort to regularly “date” each child, one-on-one. It doesn’t have to be much—even just an ice cream cone and engaged dialogue. But make sure to listen to them. When your kids know that you value them as unique individuals, they’ll feel more secure in their place in the household. So it’s marriage first, then kids—in that order. That’s the way it all begins, and that’s the way it works best. For more tips and resources to build a thriving family, go to FocusOnTheFamily.com.
Once you have the go-ahead, help your mom calculate the total value of all her assets (savings, investments, real estate, etc.). Then ask questions about her monthly spending. Can she eliminate any expenses? Are there other sources of money available (e.g., cashing in a life-insurance policy, selling items or properties)? What about health coverage? Does your mom have Medicare or Medicaid and any supplemental insurance coverage? It’s also crucial to determine whether she has the means to continue supporting herself at her current standard of living. For this to be possible, the aver-
age retiree today has to provide about 60 percent of her living expenses while Social Security pays for the rest. If investments are a major part of her retirement income, and you’re not comfortable addressing that area yourself, get referrals from friends and look for a reputable financial adviser with integrity and a good track record. To find local professional agencies that can help you and your mother resolve financial matters, contact the Eldercare Locator, a free, nationwide directory assistance service. The toll-free number is 1-800-677-1116; the website is www.eldercare.gov. For state and county organizations, check the phone book or visit the website for the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (www.n4a.org). Finally, if you have relationship concerns and challenges associated with this situation, please don’t hesitate to give our Counseling Department a call at 800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).

Cold Winter
for the Month
We purchased an old home in Northern Michigan from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and I was concerned about the house’s lack of insulation. “If they could live here all those years, so can we!” my husband confidently declared. One January night the temperature plunged to below zero, and we woke up to find interior walls covered with frost. My husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up. “For the past 30 years,” he muttered, “they’ve gone to Florida for the winter.”

Lessons we can learn from a snowman Wearing white is always in style – even after Labor Day. Getting outside in the winter is good for your health. We’re all made up of mostly water. It’s fun just to hang out in your front yard. Accessories don’t have to be expensive. Don’t get too much sun! If you’re a little bottom heavy – hey, that’s okay! You know you’ve made it when they write a song about you. If you look down and can’t see your feet – you’re probably not very active. Sometimes sweating too much can have disastrous results.
New Year Prayer
Dear Lord, so far this year I’ve done well. I haven’t gossiped, I haven’t lost my temper, I haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I’m very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on I’m probably going to need a lot more help. Amen

It’s a big focus in education around the country because the demand for STEM jobs is so high. • The projections show that the increase and demand for STEM related careers is far outpacing growth in all other occupations. In fact, by 2020 there will be 1 million more computer science jobs than students who can enter the labor force as skilled workers.
”Leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today— especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.”
by Judy Adorno, Director, St. Petersburg Sylvan Learning Center
The Demand for STEM is High
President Barak Obama, September 16, 2010
• Leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate and inspire our students today so we can fill all of these STEM jobs in the future. • Data shows it’s important to get kids started in STEM early on. In fact, 4 out of 5 college students majoring in a STEM field made the decision to do so in high school or earlier.
STEM at Sylvan • At Sylvan we want to build excitement for STEM early on, so our classes are designed to be really fun and interactive. Kids just love them!
• Our coding kids get to work on very cool projects, like creating animations and building actual video games so they’re having fun while learning critical STEM skills.
• We know that the earlier we can get kids to understand that STEM is cool, the better we can set them up for success down the road.
“Our policy at Facebook is literally to hire as many talented engineers as we can find. There just aren’t enough people who are trained and have these skills today.” Mark Zuckerberg, Founder, Facebook
Building Robots is COOL!
• All EDGE programs have group dynamics, so kids can bring their friends or make new ones! When they are with friends, the learning environment becomes more engaging and fun!
Robotics
Coding
• We know kids love building with LEGOS®. It brings out their imagination and creativity, but our new Robotics courses take it so much further.
• Kids in our Robotics class will learn engineering concepts like how pulleys and levers and motors • Coding is just cool! Computer programming is work. And they get programming skills as well in almost everything around you so it’s a very because once they build their LEGO models, important skill to have. Many schools are even they program the models to life into robots— allowing it to fulfill a language requirement. they move and make sounds! • Our courses help kids get some programming basics in a very kid-friendly way. They are not writing lines and lines of code – we use very visual and intuitive building blocks that make it easy to learn and use.
