In an era of safe spaces, trigger warnings, and an unprecedented election, the country’s youth are in crisis. Senator Ben Sasse warns the nation about the existential threat to America’s future. In The Vanishing American Adult, Sasse diagnoses the causes of a generation that can’t grow up and offers a path for raising children to become active and engaged citizens. This book will ignite a much-needed debate about the link between the way we’re raising our children and the future of our country.

tonight was actually very good, although he uses just a little too much dill in his tzatziki sauce. The bad thing about David cooking though, is that he has no idea how to clean up a kitchen. And he uses a lot of dishes when he cooks. And our dishwasher is broken.
Parent to Parent Summer vacation has arrived, and with it, the constant mischief that my kids get into while trying to find any and all excuses not to work on that boring summer homework that their school assigned! So far, my oldest, David, has been primarily focused on culinary pursuits. The nice thing about this is that he has made dinner for us each night this week. The falafel
Daniel has been keeping out of trouble pretty well, spending most of the week in the pool.

”
Then there are the girls – Hanna and Haylee know how to make a mess better than any two people I know. There is no way I could even begin to guess how many outfits they have gone through in the past few days (have I ever mentioned how much I love school uniforms?), and they take snacks and drinks all over the house, eat about a third of them, and then leave the rest for someone to accidentally knock over or for the dogs to spread around the room. Today, the girls’ primary pursuit was producing their very own YouTube video. Since my husband has laid down the law and said that they aren’t al-
lowed to watch YouTube without a parent in the room, they decided the next best thing would be to create their own. Their first production is entitled “How To Take the Perfect Selfie.” Now the perfect selfie apparently involves a dark room, a crazy hairdo, and a few puns about rocks thrown in for the sole purpose of justifying the “black eye” painted on with my makeup. I don’t think my girls are going to be Internetfamous anytime soon, but based on all the giggling in the video, I think it’s safe to say that they had a good time! Whatever activities you or your kids come up with to keep from getting bored, I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable summer! Until next time,
Jennifer

It’s Great to Create! Father’s Day Pot Father’s Day is such a fun day to celebrate the men in our lives. We found a fun little craft idea that kids will enjoy making for Dad and one he will enjoy receiving, a decorated flower pot full of his favorite candy or anything else that he might like! • 1 Small to mid-sized flower pot • Spray paint in color of choice • Foam ball or circle • 1 wooden skewer • Construction paper • Fabric (the size you want your tie to be) • Tag board or poster board • Double sided tape • Glue Directions: 1. Spray paint the pot your color of choice. 2. While the paint is drying, make the tie to go on the front. Cut a tie shape out from the fabric and then glue to poster board. Then cut out. 3. Cut out a piece of foam to go in the pot. 4. Take a wooden skewer and construction paper and make a flag to go on top. 5. Decorate flag and place skewer in the foam. 6. Using double sided tape, tape the tie on the front of the pot. 7. Fill the pot with Dad’s favorite candy. 8. Give to Dad and watch the smile on his face!
Personalized Pillow for Pa This simple and adorable Handprint Pillowcase craft project is a ton of fun for preschoolers and kindergarten children to make, and just perfect for a Mother’s Day theme unit. • White Pillowcase • Fabric paint • Fabric marker • Paint brush • Paper plates Directions:
1. Pour a small amount of paint onto the plastic plates. Bright paints work the best. 2. Have the children paint one of their hands and then press their hand print on the front of the pillowcase. 3. Repeat the process till the pillowcase is full of hand prints. 4. Once the pain has dried, using the fabric signature marker add the names to each hand print and any additional message you would like to ad. 5. Give to dad and let him kick back and relax!

Destination: Dinner with the
Hungry Family
PDQ (People Dedicated to Quality) It’s summer time and we’re ready to go play and enjoy all the exciting new things Tampa Bay has to offer! The Hungry Family has had a craving for something new and fresh and this month PDQ fit the bill! From the moment we first entered and the hostess greeted our crew, to the kids pick-up game of cornhole with manager Marcus, to our last goodbye, the dinner experience at PDQ was fabulous. PDQ is a new fast casual restaurant that stands for People Dedicated to Quality. They specialize in fresh hand-battered chicken tenders, made-to-order sandwiches, daily cut fries, hand-spun milkshakes and some amazing fresh salads. The principal owners of PDQ were the founders of Outback. The partners spent more than two years developing the concept behind the brand and the quality of the food. On October 30, 2011

the original PDQ opened its doors in Tampa. PDQ now has locations in Alabama, Georgia, New Jersey, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Florida—with the newest location on Park Blvd in Pinellas. When we arrived at PDQ, we were impressed by the size and brightness of the interior. The tall ceilings provided for a nice ambiance and the open kitchen was enormous and professionallooking. The large flat screen TVs at the counter cycled through images of the menu and were a big help in deciding what to order—especially for the kids. One thing that really impressed all of us, was how fast the service was. Before we had even finished selecting our drinks from the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines,
our meals were out and the servers were calling our names! For my meal, I enjoyed PDQ’s signature tenders, which have a nice homemade taste and texture. The Tenders came with a choice of seven different homemade sauces—with the chipotle BBQ sauce being my favorite. The Hungry Dad tried one of PDQ’s many specialty sandwiches. He ordered the Buffy Bleu, a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (2 large tenders atop an egg bun with sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles). He devoured it so I think that means it was tasty. The kids tried PDQ’s Thanksgivinginspired turkey breast sandwich with stuffing spices. They loved it and by the way, it was monstrous! They also tried the Zucchini Fries, which surprisingly they also gobbled up. For dessert, PDQ has a nice selection of hand-spun traditional shakes and malts—with specialty shakes with

Oreo, Heath, chocolate peanut butter, key lime and other seasonal flavors. They also have homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Cranapple Oatmeal and Rocky Road cookies—which are all quite delicious. The atmosphere at PDQ was fun— especially outside where the kids played games. The food was fresh, flavor-filled and delicious. The staff lighthearted and friendly. Our entire family loved it and we think you and your kids will too!

10 Ways to Tell Your Father “Thank You” Hallmark may not have the kind of card we’re looking for. How do you say “thanks” to the guy who thinks helmets and pads are for sissies, who still insists he walked five miles to school – in the snow – uphill both ways, and who feigned a back injury the day you forgot yourself and tried to hug him in public? He’s not going to take flowers, either. So All Pro Dad has rounded up ten other ways you might tell your father, “Thank you.” We think he’ll understand what you’re getting at. 1 Live with integrity: For many men, satisfaction is measured in terms of their children’s lives. You are, in many respects, perceived as an extension of your father. You can be his best “Thank you”! 2 Write a letter: Phone calls are nice, emails are fairly easy, handshakes and hugs bring warmth to the heart. But to write your dad a letter, and tell him how much you appreciate his leadership in your life- there’s nothing quite like it! 3 Plan deliberate and regular one-on-one time: Remember the Harry Chapin ballad “Cats in the cradle?” The song went on to say “When you coming home son? I don’t know when…” The son
learned emotional neglect from his father. Don’t be that guy. 4 Be interested in his life: Ask your dad about his job, find out what he’s up to around the house, peruse a couple of the magazines he reads. Make an investment in what your dad values – it’s a great way to show respect. 5 Learn his stories: Your dad may not be Mr. Rogers – but he’s probably sitting on some great stories from his neighborhood and beyond. If you show you care about his life, then he’ll know you’re grateful he’s around. 6 Share your stories with him: Interest works both ways: “Remember when you taught me how to play baseball… how to set off fireworks… how to take out the trash…” You can tell how much sharing those stories with him still means to you. You can thank him by reminding him how much his investment in you has contributed to your life. 7 Listen: Sometimes it’s not even about the stories. Sometimes it’s just taking the time to listen to your
dad. What’s on his mind; what he’s thinking. He’ll know you’re grateful for the times he listened to you. 8 Figure out something your dad sacrificed for you when you were a kid —and then do what it takes to make it happen for him today: Did he pass up on golf to watch you play ball? Take him out for a round. Did he skip out on steak dinners so he could grill you some great burgers? Hook him up with a rib-eye ASAP. Has he always dreamed of a cruise? Maybe by now you’re in a position to treat him? Use your imagination. 9 Love his grandchildren: “Dad, you did so much for me when I was growing up; now watch me pass on that level of love and commitment to your grandkids. It’s the least I can do.” 10 Video him for future generations: Your father has more asphalt behind him than in front of him, so be sure to let his great-grandchildren know how special he was. Interview him and show it to your grandkids when you are his age.

DUNGY DIARIES
by Tony Dungy
We all deal with fear. Whether it is fear of speaking in public, fear of flying, fear of failure, or many other kinds, fear can paralyze us. Many young people today will look at their parents and think they don’t experience fear. But you and I both know that we do. I have had many fears in my life. Life is about overcoming our fears. That is what I try to teach my children. This is what I tell them about how to overcome fear.
1) Fear can be a good thing. If I fear the right things it will keep me in line. You need to discern the things that are good to fear. 2) Don’t let fear keep you from trying things. Some fear is healthy, but the wrong fears will keep you from experiencing some fun activities. Never let it hold you back from doing things you enjoy. Be courageous enough to step out where it’s uncomfortable. 3) Don’t fear being different. This is a big one our kids need to overcome. I encourage my kids to be the person God created them to be and not someone the culture tells them they should be. 4) Overcoming fear will make you stronger. It’s human nature to be afraid. However, when we overcome fears we grow stronger in the long run. Every time we move forward in the face of fear we get a little braver and a little more likely to overcome our AllProDad.com challenges. June 2017 • 15

Help keep kids safe from drowning, unsafe sleep, and abusive head trauma

Learn tips to prevent the top three causes of preventable child deaths in Tampa Bay and share them with parents and caregivers By Kelley Parris Executive Director, The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County In the Tampa Bay area, nearly 200 children under the age of six have died in the last five years (2012–2016) from the top three causes of preventable child death: drowning, unsafe sleep practices, and abusive head trauma. These tragedies can happen to anyone, and every member of our community — not just parents — bears the responsibility of educating themselves on these dangers. Take a few moments to learn the measures you can take today to prevent needless child deaths in our community.
DROWNING PREVENTION AND WATER SAFETY Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the Tampa Bay region. In fact, over the last five years, more than 40 children under the age of 6 have died from drowning in our area. Six of those deaths occurred in 2016.
as texting. Infants and toddlers should always be accompanied in the water and adults should stay within arm’s reach of the child.
;;Never rely on floatation devices.
Flotation devices, such as water wings, inner tubes or even life vests should be used only in conjunction with close adult supervision.
;;Be aware of hidden hazards.
A child can drown in as little as 1 inch of water. Everything from your toilet to your pet’s water bowl can pose a drowning risk. Empty bathtubs when they are no longer in use and keep bathroom doors closed.
;;Get professional help.
Take advantage of programs that offer swim lessons. For example, The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County’s Mobile Water Safety Team provides swim lessons and water safety education at no cost in community and apartment complex pools.
Drowning can happen to any child, anywhere, at any time. It’s not limited to pools and beaches — there are potential hazards in and around the home that can put children at risk.
More infants die in adult beds than anywhere else. In fact, infants are 40 times more likely to die in an adult bed than in their own cribs. Co-sleeping, which means having babies sleep in the same bed as parents, siblings or caregivers, can cause a baby to suffocate if an adult unintentionally rolls on top of them. Pillow-top mattresses, comforters, fluffy pillows, and stuffed animals also pose a danger to infants in adult beds as well as in cribs. They’re dangerous because infants under six months lack the muscle control to move their neck if something like a pillow or stuffed animal is blocking their airway.
Safe sleep tips:
;;Bring the crib into the parent or caregiver’s room.
Sharing a room with a child has almost all of the same benefits of sharing a bed, but without the risks. It’s recommended to bring the baby’s crib, or a smaller bassinet, into the parents’ room for the first year of the baby’s life.
;;Practice the ABCs of safe sleep.
The safest way for infants to sleep is Alone on their Backs in a Crib. This minimizes the risk of the infant suffocating, especially if they have not yet developed neck muscle control.
Drowning prevention tips:
;;Designate a “water watcher.”
Lack of adult supervision in and around the water is the main reason children die from drowning. An adult should be assigned to keep their eyes on the child at all times when they are in or near water, and must avoid distractions such

SAFE SLEEP PRACTICES
;;Follow crib setup recommendations.
A crib mattress should be firm and fit snugly inside the crib’s frame, and sheets should fit tightly around the mattress. The sleeping area should free of blankets, pillows, bumper pads, stuffed animals, sleep positioners and toys.

;;Learn from the past.
;;Attempt to soothe the child.
SAFE STRESS RELIEF TO PREVENT ABUSIVE HEAD TRAUMA
;;Remember it’s okay to take a time out.
As more information becomes available, parents and caregivers must let go of some practices in order to provide children with the safest environment possible for sleeping. We changed our habits about car seats and lead paint; it’s time to change our habits on co-sleeping.
Shaking an infant or young child — even once — can be fatal. While most parents think this tragedy could never happen to their families, parents are most often responsible for causing injury or death from shaking a baby, or another form of abusive head trauma. Babysitters, grandparents and other caregivers can also be responsible, especially if they are not properly prepared to handle stressful situations. In most cases of abusive head trauma, or shaken baby syndrome, the parent or caregiver does not mean to harm the child, but lacks the knowledge or skills to cope with a stressful situation. This means education is key to preventing head trauma deaths.
If the obvious solutions do not seem to be working, the next step may be a soothing action such as swaddling in a blanket, slowly rocking in a chair, humming or going for a walk. Parents should provide the child’s caregiver with a recommendation of what typically works.
If a child is crying and the situation becomes frustrating, it’s okay to leave the child safely on their back in the crib and step out of the room to regroup. Check on the child every few minutes to ensure they are still safe.
;;Talk about it.
Have frank conversations with caregivers, including spouses and immediate family members, about the dangers of head trauma. Share the above tips with them, and watch for signs that a caregiver may not be prepared to care for a child, such as if they are easily angered or stressed, or seem inattentive.
Even one preventable child death is too many. Learn more about how you can help keep children in our community safe at www.preventneedlessdeaths.com.
The Prevent Needless Deaths Campaign is an awareness campaign made possible by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, Eckerd Kids and the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Head trauma prevention tips:
;;Understand that crying is normal.
Crying is the way infants communicate. A baby may cry because they are hungry, need their diaper changed, are teething, are too hot or too cold, or simply because they are over-tired. Prepare for these situations where your child might cry.

Belleair Montessori Academy Serving families for the past 70 Years!
“It was during World War II. All the men were away at war and the women worked six days a week in the factories. The women with preschool children were faced with a problem: Who would take care of their children? There were no nurseries or day care centers, so I opened one in my home.” Evelyn Eshbaker Twedt remembers those bleak years. She remembers what it was like to get up at 4:30am, get dressed and trudge out into the frigid, snow-covered world and drive along dark, icy Michigan roads – driving for miles and miles to pick up the children to bring them back to her home. Those were difficult, tough years. Mrs.Twedt forgot the exact feeling of being physically and mentally exhausted, but she did not forget when the war was over…. she took a long, long rest. “I was sooooo tired,” she said. So she and her husband and young daughter Joan vacationed in the Clearwater area and liked it so much they

returned to Michigan, sold their home and moved here in 1945. Although the war was over, Mrs.Twedt noted there weren’t any nursery schools in this area and decided to go into business again. In the very beginning Tiny Tots Nursery School was located at 611 Clearwater-Largo Road in Largo, it was “just a day care center” Mrs.Twedt explained. But gradually the enrollment expanded and she decided it was time to offer education. It was also time to look for a new location, she said, because the small building could no longer hold the growing number of children. A new school site was selected in Belleair Estates in 1947. Sixty four years ago, it was suggested by Belleair Town Officials that she purchase property adjacent to the former Town Hall, which is presently the Garden Club. In 1948, thanks to two town commissioners and friends of Mrs. Twedt, Tiny Tots Private School opened its doors

at 905 Ponce de Leon Boulevard with an enrollment of 15 students. Growing pains during the years between 1958 and 1967 resulted in additions to the first floor and construction of a second story. More teachers were added to the staff. While on a European vacation in the mid 1960s, Mrs. Twedt visited schools in Holland, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. These were schools that had the same thing in common. They were Montessori schools. “I just couldn’t believe there was an educational system like it anywhere,” Mrs. Twedt recalled. “Tears ran down my face.” What moved her to tears was the fact that students of all ages were quietly working alone or in groups – and there were no discipline problems. By this time, Mrs.Twedt’s daughter had graduated from college and was teaching at the school. The daughter,

Joan Kirk, took the Montessori courses and when she completed the classes in 1967, the Montessori teaching method was integrated into the curriculum. Montessori equipment was purchased from Holland and slowly each room was equipped with the proper teaching materials. The name was changed from “Tiny Tots Private School” to “Belleair Montessori School.” That same year Mrs. Kirk took charge of the school and Mrs. Twedt retired. By the mid 70’s Belleair Montessori offered children ages four through fourteen an education based on the Montessori teaching method. Unfortunately, during the 80’s there was a shift in the private school enrollment and Belleair Montessori was forced to eliminate their middle school grade levels. There seemed to be a need for care of younger children, so Mrs. Kirk decided to offer care for one and two year olds. This decision has proven to be a positive one since there usually is a waiting list for these classrooms.
free Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program is also available for four year olds. During the summer months the academy offers five 2-week sessions of “Learning and Fun.” These sessions will focus on academic activities to keep children interested in learning during the summer months. Generation after generation of children has attended Belleair Montessori Academy. Many parents that attended Belleair Montessori now have their children enrolled in the school. It is the oldest Montessori school on the west coast of Florida. Thousands of students have been educated there and the legacy continues. There is an open door policy for visitors to stop by anytime. As a 501-(C) (3) non-profit business entity, Belleair Montessori Academy welcomes financial contributions that will be reinvested in the school infrastructure and the education of our children.
Mrs. Kirk’s daughter, Cathie Hernandez, joined her mother at the school in 1984. Cathie and Joan worked together managing the school for over 25 years. Mrs. Kirk retired in 2010 and Cathie is now the principal. The school has made several physical upgrades and continues to offer an education for one year olds through five year olds. The state funded

About Dr. Maria Montessori and the Montessori teaching method: An Italian educator of the early 20th century, Maria Montessori is remembered as the founder of the famous Montessori Method of education which emphasized hands-on, individualized learning within mixed age groups in a child-friendly setting. Her teaching strategies and her discoveries about the process of learning revolutionized the field of education in the United States and profoundly influenced children’s education all around the world. Despite the familiarity of her name, few realize that much of the developmental, “hands-on” approach now employed in preschools and kindergartens can be traced to the innovations of Maria Montessori. Although best known as an educator, Montessori’s formal training was as a scientist and medical doctor. She is also notable for having been Italy’s first female M.D. For her committed efforts on behalf of children, especially in the face of the fascism of World War II, Montessori was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize (1949, 1950, and 1951).

Dough for Kids
Joto’s Pizza and the Rachel M. Thrower Memorial The Joto’s Families have a special place in their hearts for All Children’s Hospital (ACH). Brent and Tori Thrower established the Rachel M. Thrower Memorial in 1999 as a result of their experience with the All Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care unit in May of that year. Their experience was traumatic; however, the dedication and compassion of the staff was very comforting during those times so they wanted to find a way to give back to such an incredible staff and organization and found a way to do so. Since 2004, Joto’s Pizza has chosen to concentrate their charitable efforts in sponsoring an annual golf tournament to benefit All Children’s Hospital in the name of the Rachel M. Thrower Memorial. The “Dough for the Kids” Golf Classic was launched in May 2004 and now 14 years later, the Joto’s Pizza and the Rachel M. Thrower Memorial is recognized as a Grand Donor
for their level of giving to the All Children’s Hospital Foundation. The single day event begins with a bestball golf tournament, held at Bardmoor Golf Club this year, then continues with a buffet-style dinner at the Joto’s location on Belcher Road, and concludes with an award presentation, raffle basket winners and an incredible silent auction. Thanks to the continual outpouring of support year after year from their family, friends, and business colleagues, Joto’s Pizza has donated a cumulative amount of $384,287 prior to this year’s fundraiser. The proceeds from this year’s event will be presented at the annual ACH telethon and as a special bonus, Joto’s family and friends volunteer on the phone bank while Tori, and her sister Jodi, present the check.
“This garden is very special to my family,” said Tori Thrower, a member of the Joto’s Pizza family and Rachel’s mom. “It’s a place my kids can go as they get older and take their own children to remember their sister Rachel.”
What is really gratifying is the ability to now see where some of our previous proceeds have gone. In 2012, the Children’s Therapeutic Playground was completed on the campus of All Children’s Hospital and the Sensory Garden was named in honor of Joto’s Pizza and Rachel M. Thrower Memorial. The garden is part of the new rehabilitative playground that serves All Children’s patients and features state-of-the-art, specially designed equipment to assist special needs children and those recovering from traumatic injuries through “play therapy.”

A couple of years ago, an adoptive mother voiced her struggle with post adoption services and pulled at the heartstrings of our agency. She exposed a need in our community that was underrepresented. There is a long standing belief that on the day of adoption, all of their children’s ‘issues’ would disappear. While most children find comfort in knowing they’re in their forever home, working towards healing from their past truly begins after adoption. As a result of this mother’s plea, Camelot Community Care obtained state funding in order to serve pre and post adoptive families; who have either adopted from Hillsborough County or are currently living in Hillsborough County. The main goals of the program are to connect adoptive families to one another for peer support, link families to community resources, provide adoption competent counseling, and support families from the beginning through the many years post adoption. Our support groups encourage 22 • June 2017
the whole family to attend; the parents meet in one room with an experienced adoptive family leader. The children meet with program staff who engage in fun activities focusing on social skills, self-esteem building, anxiety reduction, anger management and peer interactions. A mantra of the program is to connect with families, from the beginning of the adoption process, in order to give them the tools to overcome the ups and downs of parenting children from difficult pasts. Our team is made up of three very dedicated women who have extensive experience in the adoption and foster care realms. We are called to do this work so that families don’t have to struggle in isolation. So come see what we are about; join us at the support group closest to you, give us a call or shoot us an email! We would love to hear from you.

with Jim Daly Q: My wife and I are expecting our first child. I’m excited to be a dad, but also intimidated. My father wasn’t a good role model, so I feel pretty clueless about this whole parenting thing. Can you help? Jim: Author Kent Nerburn once said, “It is much easier to become a father than to be one.” Maybe that’s one of the reasons why so many dads feel overwhelmed. It’s easy for dads to feel like they’re in over their heads. When your 6-month-old baby starts wailing, you can’t make him stop. When your son is failing algebra, you can’t make him pass. If your daughter gets bullied, you can’t just make all of her hurt feelings disappear. It’s much slower, subtle work. All of which, of course, can make fatherhood so frustrating. In our professional lives, dads frequently hold the reins and make things happen. But parenting often strips fathers of that control. Fatherhood isn’t like being a mechanic, as much as we might want it to be. We can’t fix things with the simple turn of a socket wrench. Even worse, sometimes we don’t know if what we’re doing is even working.
SOON-TO-BE FATHER FEELING ANXIOUS ABOUT BABY’S ARRIVAL
Being a successful dad starts by learning your role. Don’t try to force your kids down a certain path in life. You have to walk alongside and encourage them in their journey. It’s a process that takes a lot more patience, time and commitment than many men are used to. But at its heart, fatherhood is a relationship. So, remember, gently coaching your kids is the essence of what you’re aiming for. Be a coach, cheerleader and champion of your child. For plenty of parenting tips and advice, go to FocusOnTheFamily.com.
PARENT WORRIES ABOUT LETTING YOUNG KIDS VISIT DYING RELATIVE Q: My grandmother is in the final stages of cancer and her illness has dramatically altered her physical appearance. She has expressed a desire to see my two young children. Should I allow the kids to visit her? Would they find the experience too upsetting? Jim: This is a difficult decision. You’re anxious to protect your children from fear and pain. At the same time, you want to honor your grandmother’s wishes. On the whole, we take the view that death is a part of life. With appropriate preparation, it would probably be a good idea to allow your children to say goodbye to their greatgrandmother. This is especially true if they’ve enjoyed a relationship with her in the past.
Be honest with the kids about what’s happening. Use ageappropriate language to let them know that great-grandma is very, very sick. Tell them that people sometimes get so sick that their bodies don’t work right anymore. Explain that this may make them look very different than they used to. If your grandmother’s sickness has caused her to lose her hair or a lot of weight, you may want to talk about this beforehand. Be sure to lay it all out in a calm, nonthreatening way. If you appear to be anxious or fearful, your children will pick up on this and it will cause them to feel afraid. Of course, there’s a faith-based aspect, as well. While most young children don’t have the capacity to grasp abstract concepts like death and eternity, this is an opportunity to lay the groundwork for further discussion of these topics as they mature. For now, keep the conversation simple and geared to your children’s needs and their level of insight. We have numerous resources to help at FocusOnTheFamily.com.

OUR CHILD IS DEFIANT – WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Q: Our young son is defiant and talks back. He won’t do his homework and refuses to clean his room. When we try to discuss these issues with him in a calm, mature way, we usually end up getting angry and yelling at him. What are we doing wrong?
work on developing connection, respect, understanding and communication. If it’s a skill deficit, help him learn what he needs to accomplish tasks. If it really is a defiance issue, then it’s best to have consequences that are age-appropriate, consistent and well understood.
Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: First, I might suggest that you invest about 10 minutes into taking the “7 Traits of Effective Parenting” assessment; see focusonthefamily.com/parenting.
Consequences can be both positive and negative. Your child may have learned that you eventually get angry, yell and then give up -- so you need to follow through. You can use positive consequences to increase a positive behavior, and negative consequences to decrease a negative behavior. Set goals with celebrations, and set consequences with meaningful losses.
Second, you need to determine if this is a skill deficit (e.g., poor organization), or a true case of defiance. Either way, you want to
For example, you might tell your son, “If you finish your homework by 5:00, you get an extra half-hour of TV time tonight.” That’s a simple positive consequence that doesn’t cost you anything. But if 6:00 rolls around and he hasn’t even looked at his homework, as a negative consequence he loses the privilege of any TV time that night altogether. Again, spell this out clearly in advance. You’ll need to come up with appropriate consequences (both positive and negative) that really touch him where he lives. It could be skateboarding privileges, or a weekend outing with Dad. The motivating power of specific consequences will change as a child grows older.
PORNOGRAPHY AND THE IMPACT THAT ITS HAVING ON OUR TEENS Q: Hey, Bob, I’m curious: When you compare today’s media environment to what you experienced as a teenager/young adult, what’s been the most impactful change? Bob Waliszewski, Director, Plugged In: Without question, the most impactful change has been how easily young boys (and girls) can access pornography. When I was a teen, porn was available primarily in magazines and XXX bookstores. Nowadays, of course, pornography is just a click away.

DEALING WITH A CHILD WHO IS ADDICTED TO COMPUTER GAMES
A Tru Research study of over 2,000 teens, ages 13 to 17, found that a third admit to intentionally accessing nude or pornographic content online; 71 percent of them said they had done something to hide what they do online from their parents (this includes clearing browser history, deleting inappropriate videos and lying about behavior). Another comprehensive survey by Josh McDowell Ministry found that more than one quarter (27 percent) of young adults ages 25 to 30 first viewed pornography before puberty (josh.org). Plus, we’ve all heard the stories of middle and high school students sexting risque/ nude photos of themselves or others -- becoming not just consumers, but providers. Is all this simply an innocent rite of passage? Not hardly! The research is pretty clear that porn use is wreaking havoc in the bedroom (not spicing it up), increasing depression as well as anxiety, stress and social problems. So, what is the answer? Short of writing a thesis on the subject, let me just say that the first step, as difficult as it may seem, is for parents to pre-emptively sit their young person down for a chat on the subject. Ask if they’ve accessed porn intentionally. Accidently? What about their friends? Discuss what it means to live a porn-free life (including saying no to inappropriate movies/TV). Be sure your young person knows he/she can be honest without fear of reprisal, and that you’ll be there to help no matter what. If you need help along this line, you can talk to one of Focus on the Family’s licensed counselors at 800-232-6459.
• Ignoring personal hygiene. • Changes or disturbances in sleep patterns. If you notice such signs, get tougher about time limits and actively monitor screen time. It’s easier to enforce boundaries if the gaming console or computer is centrally located in your home -- keep it out of the bedroom. If your son is losing sleep, or his grades are slipping, you may need to get rid of the equipment entirely.
Q: How can I tell whether or not my child is actually addicted to video and computer games? He spends a lot of time gaming, but it’s hard to know whether it’s really that serious of a problem. Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: When it comes to addictive behavior of any kind, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Researchers at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, studied hundreds of video-gameaddiction cases. They found that addicted gamers’ lives are always significantly disrupted by the games. That’s what you want to watch out for: disruption. Several symptoms of addiction can help indicate if your son’s gaming has become something more than just a hobby. These include: • A lack of balance, and inability to stop the activity. • Isolation, neglecting or lying to family and friends. • Problems with school or a job. • Weight gain, back issues, carpal tunnel syndrome. • Irritability, defending the use of video games at all costs.
Cornerstone
Admittedly, these conversations are not easy. If your son is clearly obsessed with the game and acts out with severe hostility when unable to play, you may need to seek professional assistance. Our staff counselors can help with a brief consultation and a referral to a local therapist; call 1-800-232-6459 for more information. Counseling can uncover underlying problems that may be contributing to an addiction. However, in most cases, gaming can be controlled with consistent enforcement of limits. The goal is teaching your son decision-making and balance in life, not making him happy. Setting limits is loving, even when there’s some conflict involved.
Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two.

Make Learning Part of Your
Summer Fun by Judy Adorno, Sylvan Learning
There’s no question that kids lose some of what they’ve learned in school during the summer months. By incorporating learning activities during the summer, parents can provide their children with valuable opportunities to retain what they’ve learned, and practice the skills they need to be successful in the upcoming school year.
To help you get started, the experts at Sylvan have developed a variety of grade-specific ideas and activities. Check-out these suggestions to see which are most appropriate for your children.
Remember, the best learning often occurs when children don’t even realize they’re learning! Whether taking a nature walk, planting a mystery garden, or planning the family vacation, summer is the perfect time to discover that learning is fun—and can happen anywhere.
Take a nature walk and as you and your child walk, stop to record your observations—a drawing, a snapshot with your phone, gathering items you may want to examine more closely—or research on the internet when you get home. This can be a one-time adventure or an exploration that lasts all summer!
Grades K-3 Take a Walk on the Nature Side!
Ready, Set, Read!
Reading can be so much fun—especially when the whole family joins in. Set a reading goal for your child and challenge family and friends to participate too. Make a chart to track time spent reading, or pages read, or books read. Gather weekly to tell about the reading adventures and to see who is improving their score by reading more pages or books. At the end of the summer, cele-

brate with a pizza party—and look back to see that your child is a better reader!
Grades 3-6 Plant a Mystery Garden.
Visit a garden supply store with your child and together pick out a variety of flower seeds or seedlings. Now, here’s the trick: remove the labels so you won’t know which is which. It’s up to your child to grow the plants and figure out what they are! Have your child keep a garden journal which can include the plant’s growth, changes in stem or leaf color, buds that appear, etc. To learn more about each plant, visit the library or search the internet. At the end of the summer, press flowers in clear contact paper and place in the garden journal.
What’s Cooking?
Developing a cookbook is a great way for your child to share favorite foods and snacks with friends and family. Decide together how elaborate you want this project to be: how many recipes, when will your child try out a recipe, where will he find the recipes. Make a
timeline that will fit into the family schedule. At the end of the summer she can draw/design a cover for the cookbook and you can help create a table of contents so recipes can be easily found. Make copies, staple together and share with family and friends. Bon Appetit!
Grades 6-9 Let’s Plan a Vacation!
Half the fun of a trip happens before you even go—so why not have your teen help plan your next vacation? Start by having her research your destination for fun, interesting things to do and sites to see. Talk about the route you will take, how you will travel, places to visit along the way, what the costs will be. As you travel, he can keep a journal with details about the trip, pictures and notes about favorite places and any unplanned adventures. The journal will be a remembrance of the best family trip, ever!

Sylvan is your Best Educational Partner. Sylvan is different, and better, than other summer tutoring choices because:
We make learning personal. Your child isn’t one dimensional and the way he or she learns shouldn’t be either! We make sure your child is learning in the way that works best for him or her. We deliver big-time results. Sylvan is the only tutoring company that measures academic achievement in a systematic manner. Sylvan students achieve up to two times more growth in their math and reading scores than their peers. Up to two times! We engage kids at a deeper level.
