ditions for a spring play—Beauty and the Beast of course. My older daughter Hanna tried out and was given a narrator part as well as a spot in the chorus. So she’s been having weekly practices for several weeks now, and is about to move into bi-weekly practices until the performance in the middle of April. But she is very excited, and now even claims that her favorite character is no longer Lumiere, but Narrator number 4!
It’s probably a good thing that the “tale as old as time” is one of my top three Disney princess movies, because we have been bombarded with it lately, and will continue to be for at least another month and a half! It all started right before Christmas break, when the music teacher at my girls’ school announced that she would be holding au-
Hanna also had a birthday recently, and she wanted to go to the Be Our Guest restaurant at Walt Disney World. We had eaten there once before, but she wanted to go again when she could dictate that we sit in the West Wing dining room. We couldn’t get in on her birthday weekend, but we were able to get a reservation a few weeks later. Then later in the month, Haylee, Hanna and I all participated in the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend, and wouldn’t you know it—this year’s theme was Beauty and the Beast. All three of us ran the 5K, Hanna and I ran the 10K, and I ran the Half Marathon,

primarily because I wanted the beautiful enchanted rose medal. And finally of course, the long-anticipated live action movie is being released this month, something that all the girls in my house have been looking forward to for months now. And now that it’s getting close, even two of the three guys in the house are at least a little bit excited. The one exception is my oldest, David, who still insists that the story just glamorizes Stockholm Syndrome. David also likes to focus on the plot inconsistencies— who would actually place a potentially lifelong curse on an 11-year-old child? And how is Chip so young ten years into the curse? And where in the world did Belle even get the yellow dress? But the rest of us can look past those things and enjoy a good story demonstrating that beauty is found not in a yellow dress, but in a person’s heart. And there is also some really good music to go along with it! Until next time,

Even if your family has not a wee smidgen of Irish heritage, it’s great fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by donning your green.

It started in my mid 30’s when a friend asked me to join her in a half marathon that just happened to be on her birthday. I reluctantly agreed and it changed my life forever. Like I mentioned, I like to travel and race. So, a group of friends and I were going to hit the strip and RUN.... The Las Vegas Marathon 2014! I had a little countdown going on facebook. Ainsley’s Angels of America to meet you.” The message was from a man named “Rooster.” A marine with the last name Rossiter, so “Rooster” was an easy fit. He was the President of an organization called, “Ainsley’s Angels of America.” Made me think because I remember wanting to join them months prior to this but couldn’t because Florida didn’t have a chapter. The closest chapter to me was Alabama. They are a cool group of runners that raise awareness for “inclusion.” They believed everyone should be included… in every aspect of life, but focus on endurance events like marathons and triathlons. I did a little research and found out the name “Ainsley” is Rooster’s daughter. An exceptional needs child who felt the wind in her hair on her first ride in a “freedom chair” and had never looked back.

The Rossiter family felt Ainsley’s joy and wanted to share it with the world, so they did. The following day, I was sent a private message from Rooster asking me to run with the Angels… an invitation to earn my angel wings, to push a child. An overwhelming wave traveled over me. I still don’t know if it was excitement or fear. So many emotions… worry, nervousness, questions… I mean, I’ve never done anything like that. Who would I push? Would I have some help? I’ve never trained for

something like this! Before I could answer, Rooster asked me to pray about it and get back with him. That was just the nudge I needed. I knew where my prayers would lead me and I said, “yes.” Three days later I was in Bright Light City meeting my Angel Rider Shamus and his daddy, Angel Shaun. Shaun and I pushed Shamus 26.2 glorious miles. We
crossed the finish line on a brightly lit Vegas Strip. I could barely see the finish line through the tears. I hold that day, those days, that entire memory close to me as I stand in my Florida garage filled with Florida Freedom Chairs. Florida now has a chapter (a family). Ainsley’s Angels in Florida was born two months after I earned my Angel Wings in Vegas. We now have one year behind us. We’ve participated and shared the message of inclusion at more than 20 Florida race events. We even hosted our very own half marathon! We’ve raised funds to purchase freedom chairs and we’re saving for a trailer as we have outgrown my husband’s work van for transportation. Our Florida family is 170 strong and growing! “Together We Shall” is not just a way of life for us, it’s a movement.
Join us! Runners, Riders, Cheerleaders, Guardian Angels… everyone is welcome! For more information, check out our Florida website, message me or “friend me” on facebook. My name is Jodi Stoner but my friends call me “Run Jodi.” http://ainsleysangels.org/Ambassadors/Florida/Tampa

2017 Plugged In Movie Awards: and the award goes to …
pluggedin.com
by Paul Asay, pluggedin.com
Plugged In’s award-winning website and reviews are designed to shine a light on the world of popular entertainment while giving families the essential tools they need to understand, navigate and impact the culture in which they live.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, after long and arduous deliberation (involving an occasional round of fisticuffs) and painstaking vote counting, it’s time to unveil the winners of our fourth annual Plugged In Movie Awards. Alas, due to budget cuts, we had to cancel our typical star-studded banquet in Hollywood. Perhaps next year.
BEST MOVIE FOR KIDS
BEST MOVIE FOR TEENS
BEST MOVIE FOR ADULTS
BEST CHRISTIAN MOVIE
The Nominees: Finding Dory, The Jungle Book, Moana, Pete’s Dragon, Sing! Plugged In’s Pick: Pete’s Dragon
The Nominees: Captain America: Civil War, A Monster Calls, Queen of Katwe, Race, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Plugged In’s Pick: Queen of Katwe
The Nominees: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion Plugged In’s Pick: Arrival
The Nominees: Ben-Hur, I’m Not Ashamed, Miracles From Heaven, Risen, The Young Messiah Plugged In’s Pick: Risen
Yep, this category was pretty competitive, what with the strong, empowering messages in Moana to Dory’s poignant search for her parents. But Pete’s Dragon, with its fantastical, touching tale of an orphaned lad and his invisible dragon pulled enough heartstrings to come out with the win.
In a category filled with CGI bombast and monster blockbusters, Plugged In chose a quiet, beautiful film that few people saw but almost everyone should. Queen of Katwe, the well-crafted story of a girl raised in one of Uganda’s worst slums who becomes a teenage chess whiz, is filled with great messages involving faith, family and perseverance. Oh, and by the way, it’s an outstanding film aesthetically, too.
This was tough. Lion’s resonant narrative about a kid taken from his family and, as a man, tries to find it again, offers some great messages in a powerful, poignant package. But in the end we chose Arrival, a surprisingly poignant movie about one woman’s attempt to communicate with aliens … and makes some difficult but incredibly impactful choices along the way.
As we’ve said before, Christian movies have never been better. This was an incredibly difficult choice, but Risen came with the whole package: A powerful message, a crowd-pleasing story, an A-list actor and top-shelf filmmaking. It’s the sort of craftsmanship we’d like to see more of.

From the Broadway Bound My family needs staycation ideas, because like most of us, my husband and I only get so much vacation time a year. So this Spring Break, we’ll be spending most of our children’s break from school right here in town.
to Junior Rock StarS...
Thankfully, with a little creativity – and help from iMOM! – you can come up with fun things we can do without leaving home. And the best part is that they’re not expensive or complicated. See what you think of these 10 super staycation ideas.
Fresh and fun performing arts camps for all experience levels, age 5 - 16
1 Visit a nature center, or wildlife rescue or refuge center. 2 Camp out: You can do this at a campsite in your own area. Or, you can even have a camp out in your backyard. Don’t want to head outside, check out our website imom.com for some fun indoor campouts!
3 Sign up for a workshop or activity you can do as a family. Look into cooking lessons, tennis lessons or walking tours.
4 Let your kids choose their dream destination and then go there –
without leaving home. Decorate a room in the style of that country or city. Watch a movie shot on location. Eat the food of that locale. Try to learn a bit of the language.
HIP HOP SUPERHEROES CAMP “HAMILTON” AND “MOANA” CAMP THE BEATLES VS. NIRVANA ROCK BAND CAMP AND MORE...
For a complete listing of all camps and registration dates visit
playstpete.com/Summer
5 If you have friends who are also taking staycations, see about trading houses with them for the weekend.
6 Enlist the help of grandparents and other relatives. Let your children spend a few days away from home, and see if you can join them on the weekend.
7 Join a country club or community pool. Some clubs in smaller
cities offer membership for as little as $50 a month. Consider it an investment in keeping your kids active this summer. Call around to see if you can find “summer only” specials.
8 Take the train. Many railway carriers offer short trips of an hour or two. Pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery with your kids.
9 If you have a beach, lake or river nearby, check the paper or Internet
for bargains on rentals. Since fewer people are traveling this summer, you might be able to get a great deal.
10 Visit a local art museum with your kids. Once they’ve seen the
paintings, sculpture, photography, and other creative works, give them some drawing paper, some modeling clay or a camera, and let them recreate their own favorites at home. Then create a gallery in your family room featuring their finished works of art.

A Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Marriage You are probably beginning the process of spring cleaning your home. As I think about the tasks of spring cleaning our house and specifically our garage, and the clutter, dirt, and grime that awaits me, I can’t help but think about my relationship with my wife.
by her, but it is noticed by you and will eventually come out in words or actions. Be patient, be kind, and be gentle even in challenging situations with your wife.
There are some dirty issues in our relationship that could use a good cleaning in order for us to function in the best way possible, while remaining attracted to one another.
There are times when the way I serve my wife is like when we were dating. Then there are times when I’m nowhere close to that type of service. These are the times when you need to go back to the dating days. Put your love in the form of action, and serve your wives.
I’m sure you are in the same boat. Here are 5 areas in your relationship to add to your spring cleaning checklist.
Your conversation.
Have you allowed non-loving words, or words that aren’t building up your spouse, into your relationship? Clean that up quickly. Make sure the words you speak to your spouse are in love and will build her up, not tear her down.
Your acts of service.
Your time together.
Kids, work, and everything else seem to compete with our quality time. It can be easy to allow your quality and alone time in your relationship to fall off the radar. Don’t let this happen; clean up your calendar and your schedule, making time for your relationship a priority.
Your attitude.
After cleaning up your words, how about your attitude? Your attitude may not always be noticed

Springtime: It’s Not All About Flowers and Sunshine by Kathleen Rodriquez Thoughts of spring usually bring visions of longer days, warmer weather, and a plethora of blooming flowers. True, all of these are welcomed changes that take place in the Florida springtime, usually in the month of March. However, something else of significance changes in March – something very important – yet we seldom give it much thought: suicide.
Kathleen Rodriquez is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at WebbRauckhorst Counseling. She specializes in therapy with children and families.
Historically March is the month with the highest rate of suicide. It is a subject that may be taboo for some; but with over 34,000 suicides in the United States annually, it’s a topic that cannot be ignored. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15-24. This age group accounts for over 4,000 suicides a year in the U.S. The belief that suicide is a spiritual issue is a myth. The truth is, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, 90% of those who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental health disorder. Males are four times more likely to die from suicide than females; however, females are more likely to attempt suicide. The strongest risk factors for attempted suicide in youth are depression, substance abuse, and aggressive/disruptive behaviors. Other risk factors include self-injury behavior, low self-esteem, feelings of wanting to die, family history of suicide, and fire arms in the home.
The following are warning signs for teen depression: • Feelings of sadness or hopelessness • Decline in School Performance • Loss of pleasure/interest in social and sports activities • Increase in sleep • Decrease in weight or appetite • Nervousness, irritability, anger outbursts • Neglect of personal appearance • Increase in physical complaints such as headache, stomach ache and fatigue • Alcohol or drug use • Withdrawal from family and friends
to be embraced and loved by his parents. Teenage years can be a very tumultuous time. This can equate to a daunting, but worthwhile, task for parents.
When depression manifests itself as behavioral changes such as withdrawal, anger outbursts, or defiance in teenagers, an impulse reaction for parents may be to throw up their hands and think, “Enough is enough. If my child wants to act this way, then so be it.” However, this is a crucial time when a child needs
God is with you at your best and at your worst. As Hebrews 13:5 states, “…He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Even in the bleakest situations, there is ALWAYS hope. Get help today.
What may be viewed as a “teen phase” could actually be a serious issue that requires professional help. Asking for help is an act of strength and courage. Parents must stay involved with their teen and refuse to be shut out. Suicide is an act of desperation and hopelessness. It is illogical – although it may seem totally logical in the eyes of the person considering it.

Kids and Type II Diabetes? by Dr. Kelley Mulhern, Thrive! Chiropractic & Wellness, LLC
Fifteen years ago, type II diabetes was virtually unheard of in kids. In June 2012, results from the “SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth” study found that the rates of pediatric type II diabetes had increased 21 percent between 2001 and 2009! Furthermore, the journal Diabetes Care (2013) published a study that found the disease progresses more quickly in youths than adults, and children with type II diabetes rapidly develop signs of complications such as heart and kidney disease. Fact: Type II Diabetes is a problem with sugar metabolism and inflammation. Fact: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the average American consumes a staggering 150 to 170 pounds of refined sugars in one year! This is far more sugar than our bodies were designed to handle.

What can you do to help protect your family from type II diabetes? Tip #3: Know the Risk Factors: Some Tip #1: Common Sense Dietary Changes: Reduce or eliminate processed sugars from your household. (Replace with stevia for a healthier alternative.) Increase your family’s intake of raw vegetables and fruits. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of pure water, daily. risk factors include a family history of type II diabetes, being overweight, poor diet, and reduced physical activity. In addition, people of some ethnic backgrounds are more at risk for developing type II diabetes, including African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics/Latinos. Tip #4: Know the Symptoms: Some signs and symptoms of type II diabetes can include: Fatigue, weight gain, food cravings, excessive thirst, excessive urination, blurry vision, poor wound healing, depressed immune system, and
Tip #5: Get Tested: Talk to your doctor or pediatrician about what tests make sense. A urinalysis can reveal glucose (sugar) in the urine or other abnormalities that may be indicative of type II diabetes. Bloodwork, such as fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c can also be performed. Do the tests annually and monitor the changes over time. For more information, including ways to reduce, halt, and even REVERSE Type II Diabetes, we invite you to attend our free discussion, “A DrugFree Approach to Type II Diabetes,” on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 6:15 pm. 6 Tips for Picking the Right Summer Camp for Your Child by Katie Bugbee If you went to summer camp, you have a million amazing memories. Where else can you make friendship bracelets and lifelong friends? But with so many options these days, which one is the best for your child? Is it day camp or sleepover? With friends or without? And which interests should you focus on? Here are the six factors you should focus on when choosing the best camp for your child.
3 Choose with Friends or Without? Clearly, the more local, the
more people they’ll know. So, if one of your goals for camp is for your child to meet new people and challenge her own social strengths, look outside your town. On the flip side, you’ll want to factor in the commute. If the camp doesn’t bus kids, you might want to rely on those BFF’s parents to create a carpool.
4 Consider the Camp’s Focus:
1. Talk about Expectations: Before General camps offer a variety of activities,
you even start your research, discuss the idea of camp with your child. What does he want to do this summer? Who would he want to go with? What new things would she like to accomplish? This will help you start a nice search. However, always factor in your parent-intuition: if you know he could use a chance to meet new friends, or focus on her swimming skills as well as her love of animals, don’t rule things out just because your child has a strong opinion. Balance will be key to challenging kids while giving them the summer of their lives.
2 Decide on Day or Overnight: Day camp is a great way to keep kids active and social all summer long while staying local. And you have more insight into what is going on each day. And it’s great if your child is just warming up to camp.
Overnight camp typically starts at age 7. For kids who have outgrown the local camp experience and are looking for a new adventure, this could be an easy choice. If your child does well at sleepovers, follows directions at school and isn’t afraid to be independent in new activities, they are good candidates. The only question is - are you ready for them to be away for a week or more?
24 • March 2017
Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper
including swimming, archery, team sports, arts and crafts, ropes courses, music and team building activities. So kids experience new interests. But if your child wants to focus on certain skill-building and meet like-minded people, consider a specialty camp. Just remember that three weeks of back-to-back art classes could curb interest in the activity. Adding a week or two at specialty camp after a general camp might be your best way to create balance.
5 Do Research: Now you’re ready to look into reviews and prices. If going local and interested in joining friends, send an email to certain parents asking what their summer plans are. They might have favorite camps they rave about, to make your decision easy. Once you have a few choices, call the camps directly, ask your questions and find out all the details. 6 Meet the Camp Family: Get to
know the people who run the show. Introduce yourself and your child to the director and counselors on the first day. It will let them know you’re committed to the camp, and in turn, they will be committed to your child’s happiness. Make sure the counselors are aware of any of your child’s needs or concerns. This will help you all feel like you’re part of a team focused on giving your kid the best camp experience. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Wooden on Leadership
by John Wooden
With all the hoopla of the NCAA Basketball tournament going on, we thought it appropriate to share with you some advice from one of the greatest coaches ever. The following excerpt comes from Coach John Wooden and Jay Carty’s book Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. Success is peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming. When do we know that we have succeeded?
While many rank Wooden as the greatest coach of the twentieth century he considered himself first a teacher. Wooden was married to his high school sweetheart, Nell, for fifty-three years. Coach Wooden lived to be 99. Coach Wooden passed away on June 4, 2010.
When asking ourselves this question, we should forget what others think. They don’t know. We should be more concerned with our character than with our reputation: Our character is what we truly are, while our reputation is merely what others perceive us to be. As I have often said, having a good reputation doesn’t determine success. Neither do awards, accolades or achievements. Winning seems so important, but it actually is irrelevant. Having attempted to give our all is what matters—and we are the only ones who really know the truth about our own capabilities and
performance. Did we do our best at this point in our life? Did we leave all we had to give on the field, in the classroom, at the office or in the trenches? If we did, then we are a success – at that stage of our life. But being successful at one point doesn’t necessarily make us a success at every point – and it does not mean that we reach the apex. We must learn to give our all in one success after another. Likewise, accomplishing certain goals does not necessarily translate to success. As I write these words, I am 94 years old. God has given me good health beyond what most people could ever dream to have. I still drive my car for short distances. I am still independent, and I want to stay that way. I want to continue to live in the home that I shared with my dear wife, Nellie. But being able to accomplish that goal has nothing to do with being
successful. Goals are wonderful in that they stretch us and help us to reach our potential, but making or missing goals has nothing to do with success. It is not my way to count or list my awards. I know that people still want to hear me speak, and I am honored by their requests. People still want to meet with me – in fact, they come from all over the world. It is a privilege to be able to continue to encourage others. My hectic schedule has probably done much to keep my mind as clear as it is, even though it’s not as sharp as it once was. My family has been around me, too. What a blessing that has been! I am blessed beyond belief – but am I a success? Believe me when I say, none of these factors is part of the criteria. I am not saying I don’t appreciate the blessings that have come my way. I am not saying that at all. Responsibility

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination. He looked at the old pages as he turned them. Then something fell out of the Bible and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. “Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out. “What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy’s voice he answered: “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”

with Jim Daly Q: My husband is having disturbing flashbacks as a result of active combat duty during his time in the military. I’m just starting to learn about post-traumatic stress disorder. His condition has become much worse over the past several weeks, and our entire family is deeply worried. How can we best support him? Jim: Your family is certainly not alone: PTSD is an increasingly frequent problem in today’s war-torn world. And it’s understandable that many returning veterans find it difficult to share their emotional pain. In many ways they’ve been to the brink of hell and back, and they don’t want to upset their friends and families by describing their experiences. In addition to this, they assume that only those who’ve experienced combat can possibly understand and appreciate the significance of their internal struggles. So they keep their mouths shut and stuff their feelings deep down inside.
COMBAT VETERAN’S PTSD WORRIES WIFE, FAMILY
In many cases the intensity of the emotional suffering endured by a combat veteran far outweighs the pain of any physical injuries he may have sustained in the line of duty. That’s not to mention that psychological pain often expresses itself by way of physical or psychosomatic symptoms. Among other things, your husband’s flashbacks reflect the very real connection that exists between mind and body. For this reason, we would strongly suggest that he make an appointment to discuss his condition with a qualified physician at the earliest opportunity (if he hasn’t already done so). It’s possible that some of the issues he’s dealing with can be effectively treated with medication. We would also recommend that your entire family seek out the services of a licensed counselor. It’s important that you walk through this experience together. Focus on the Family’s Counseling Department (1-800-232-6459) can provide you with a list of qualified therapists practicing in your area.
HUSBANDS FRIENDS DRIVE WIFE CRAZY Q: I just recently got married, and now I’m finding that I don’t get along with my husband’s friends. In fact, I’m not sure I even like them at all. What can I do? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: When a person marries, they don’t just gain a spouse,
Changing
they inherit that person’s entire social network of friends. And that can sometimes create a challenging (or even awkward) situation. The question to ask is: Why do you not like your husband’s friends? Is it a case of “the guys” acting irresponsibly or doing things you can’t condone? Worse yet, does your husband sometimes get pulled into that behavior as well? If so, then you have a legitimate concern, and your husband should take responsibility for bringing resolution to that disagreement. It may require him to make some tough decisions about whether these friendships are worth maintaining. Of course, this is the kind of issue that can easily erupt into conflict between a couple. If you find that happening, be sure to speak to a counselor.

On the other hand, what if you simply have different tastes and interests than your husband’s friends? In that case, it’s up to you to do the hard work of getting to know them and finding some common ground on which to build a relationship. That may be a real struggle at first. But if you think of it
as a way to strengthen your relationship with your husband, you’ll find it easier to be patient with his friends. And if they’re married themselves, definitely try to build friendships with their wives. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even learn to enjoy and embrace them all one day.

So what you should do is whatever it takes. Begin by attacking both the income and the expense sides of your financial equation. If possible, take extra work/jobs. Sell as many of your possessions as you can stand to part with. Cut spending to the bone. Deny yourself small pleasures and luxuries. You’ll be glad you did once you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If your situation is really desperate, you may have to sell an asset (or several) that you prize dearly and “downsize.” Another strategy would entail increasing your monthly payments while destroying your credit cards (i.e., no further debt). SINGLE MOM LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON DATING Q: I’m a single mom with four young children. I think I’m ready to start dating again. My kids need a dad, and I’d love to have a husband. But I’m scared this marriage will end up like my last one. Any advice? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: My heart goes out to you; your situation is common for many single mothers. Finding the right husband and a good father for your children could mean a whole new future for all of you. On the other hand, the wrong person could make the challenges you’re facing even worse. My advice is to move forward very carefully. Dating when you have children can be complicated. Don’t be tempted to rush into a serious relationship. Marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment, not something to make a rash decision about. Let relationships develop naturally, and make sure your friends and family help you notice potential character flaws about the men you date that you might not otherwise see.
Also, keep this in mind: It can be traumatic for children when a parent cycles through one relationship after another. So if you choose to date, be diligent about protecting your children’s hearts. If you do get married someday, the man you’re with will not only be marrying you, but your children as well. It’s worth the trouble it takes to slow down and find someone who will treat them—and you—with the love and respect you deserve. For more tips on all these issues, visit FocusOnTheFamily.com.
TEENS EXCESSIVE TEXTING WORRIES MOM Q: In the past two weeks, my 16-year-old daughter has sent or received over 3,000 text messages. So far it hasn’t affected her grades, but I worry that this much texting is excessive and unhealthy. What should we do? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: I would agree that this frequency and level of texting is unhealthy. That said, this isn’t a single-sided issue, so it’s also helpful to look at the matter from your daughter’s perspective. Texting is a tool she’s using to stay connected with her friends—and at this stage of life, that connection is vital to her developing sense of personal identity. To some extent, that’s completely normal. For her generation, texting is almost like breathing—kids have a hard time imagining life without it. In that context, honestly assess the reasons for your anxiety. Is it the texting that bothers you, or is your real concern the quality of the relationships that the texting represents? Use that insight for the foundation of your discussion.
Emphasize that nothing put in text or any other form of social media can be kept absolutely private; that should always be in the forefront of your daughter’s mind. Also, remind her of the addictive element inherent to any form of involvement with social media. It’s easy for a habit to become an obsession, and for an obsession to become an addiction. So coach her to exercise discretion when texting or connecting with others via the web. Try to agree on reasonable limits and guidelines. Meanwhile, encourage your daughter to think intentionally about the nature and quality of good relationships. Talk about the important differences between electronic communication and actual face-to-face time with other people. Help her gain perspective so that she, too, can approach the subject of texting from a broader and more knowledgeable point of view.

Extending Their Learning Dr. Kira Wilson, Director, Covenant Academy I think it’s fair to say that we all have a love/hate relationship with research. A study comes out espousing a new and improved way to brush our teeth only to find out a year or two later that we had it right all along. Fat is the cause of obesity and is bad for our health. Non-fat becomes the craze; then we learn we need to eat good fat! In the world of education, we swing from one method of instruction to another based on current research.
Presently, educators are focused on differentiated instruction which basically means we teach whatever works for any given student. For all the innovations in education and research there are some consistent discoveries that are worth practicing. Decades of research shows a positive relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement-reporting it to be the number one factor for success. It’s common sense, right? The person closest to the child, the one who taught him how to eat with a spoon, tie his shoes, learn colors, and ride a bike, has tremendous influence and opportunity to teach their child. Parental involvement is not about volunteering at school and helping with homework. Parental involvement is spending purposeful time with your child, interacting, supporting, and encouraging them in the learning process. Conscientious parents often greet their child at the end of the school day with questions like: how was your day, what did you do today, or what did you learn today? Frequently parents receive the classic response – “nothing.” But you know this isn’t true. Your child spent six hours in the classroom with direct instruction, group work, and structured and unstructured interaction with peers! So how do you extract this knowledge from your child and become involved in his learning? Somewhere in the backpack or school folder is a clue. An art project, a map, a new reader, or a note from the teacher can all function as a catalyst for conversation.

After our Kindergarten teacher read the Drinking Gourd to the class, a little boy went home excited about this lesson on the Big Dipper. He carried home a model of the asterism and was able to explain what he had learned at school. The parents extended the classroom learning with their son by searching for the Big and Little Dipper in the night sky. The learning became relevant and was reinforced by the parents’ involvement. This young student will long remember the lesson he learned that day. Rather than asking a broad question when you pick your child up from school or an activity, try searching for a catalyst for conversation and say, “tell me about this story you wrote (or book you’re reading, or picture you drew),” and be ready to explore the night sky. Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County. With more than 30 years in Christian education, her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a love for God. She cherishes family time with her husband of 38 years, three children, and two grandchildren.

Let’s Celebrate Pi Day! by Erin Nobles, Director, Mathnasium of St Petersburg
March 14 is celebrated in math classes around the world as Pi day, but there’s no reason parents can’t get in on the fun! Plan some fun math-centered activities and show your favorite student how math can be silly.
What is Pi?
First things first…in case you haven’t thought about Pi since 10th grade geometry class, Pi is the number you get when you divide the circumference of a circle (the distance around the circle) by its diameter (the distance across). Because Pi is the same for every circle, we can use it to solve for the diameter of a circle, if we know the circle’s circumference, or to solve for the circumference of a circle if we know its diameter. And even though Pi is often written at 3.14, Pi contains an infinite number of digits without a pattern of repetition. As

far as we can tell, it doesn’t matter how long we calculate Pi (even with NASA’s most sophisticated supercomputers), we will never find its end.
Playing with numbers
The curious properties of Pi have fascinated mathematicians for many years, and provide teachers and parents with lots of opportunities for fun. Of course, you can never go wrong with a Pi day pie. Encourage your children to compete to memorize the most digits of Pi and the winner gets the largest slice! Another idea is to show children how to calculate Pi in the real world by having your child measure cylindrical objects with string. Have them cut up the string into three even pieces, and then measure the leftover piece to see how it’s always Pi. Also, there are

many websites devoted to Pi day fun, games, and accessories. For ideas, visit www.piday.org. But even without a computer, parents can encourage children to memorize the first few digits of Pi.
Artists can write poetry about Pi (a Pi-ku, perhaps?) or paint a picture of Pi. If you’re feeling sporty, try a Pi-athlon (run or bike 3.14 miles – roughly a 5K).
No longer reserved only for the geek culture, pi is fun, approachable, and entertaining. At Mathnasium we are seeking to promote National Pi Day and the importance of a strong STEAM education. All technology, from the wheel to the Smart Phone, utilizes physical laws that are described in terms of mathematics, and we want to encourage you to enjoy this fun day, which also happens to be the birthday of Albert Einstein!
