as well. And that means we’ve now discovered the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot.

Parent to Parent So there are a lot of really great things to do right here in Tampa Bay. But with Kissimmee less than two hours up the road, our Disney-loving family ends up traveling over there on quite a few weekends. We used to just buy the 4-day Discover Disney passes that are available for Florida residents in the winter and spring, and so that would be the only time we would go to the theme parks. But for the past two years, we’ve gotten the Florida resident seasonal pass instead, and we can now go in the fall

My youngest, Haylee, has been talking for weeks now about the Loaded Mac and Cheese. She loves any and all macaroni and cheese, and eating it at Disney just makes it taste that much better. Hanna really likes the Chocolate Belgian Waffle, and Daniel, well he just loves it all! Daniel has always been my most adventurous eater. He was 14 years old the first time we went to the Food and Wine Festival, and we made the mistake of sending him ahead to Epcot with a Magic Band while my husband, the girls, and I spent the afternoon at the pool. Let me just say, Daniel ate really well that day, and our resort bill showed it! Now we know to get each of the kids a gift card so they have a set amount to spend instead of letting them have free reign.

Besides the food, there are a lot of other fun things to do as well. I always enjoy the chocolate sculptures, although the kids are only marginally impressed with those. Haylee and I did the Remy (from Ratatouille) scavenger hunt one year, and she really enjoyed that. She was way better than I was at spotting the little statues scattered throughout the World Showcase, that’s for sure. And she was very proud of her completed map once we had found them all. But the food really is the main attraction (and I guess for some people, the wine is too). If you want to enjoy a wide variety of food in a short amount of time, or if you just want to introduce picky kids to some exotic cuisine without risking a high-priced restaurant meal, the festival is a great way to do it! Oral Hygiene and Your Overall Health by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics

Poor oral health has been linked to heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. But by changing certain habits, you can improve the health of your mouth and teeth and lessen your risk. How well you care for your teeth and gums has a powerful effect on your overall health. Neglecting your oral health lead to more than just sore teeth and bad breath — it can open the door to all sorts of health problems, including some pretty nasty diseases like oral cancer. Researchers have found possible connections between gum problems and heart disease, bacterial pneumonia, stroke, and even problem pregnancies.

“You cannot be healthy with an unhealthy mouth any more than one can be healthy with an infected foot,” says Richard H. Price, DMD, spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA) and a former clinical instructor at the Boston University Dental School.

The Role of Diet and Lifestyle in Oral Health

A number of dietary habits and lifestyle factors can affect oral health, including:

• Sugar consumption.

Having a sugar-laden diet will contribute to tooth decay and gum problems, as the bacteria in the mouth thrive in this environment, producing tooth and gumdestroying enzymes and acids.

• Smoking. Dental care experts have

long known that smoking cigarettes and cigars and using tobacco products can cause periodontal disease (gum disease), tooth decay, and oral cancer. Cigars can also cause periodontal disease and throat, or pharyngeal, cancer. The smoke from tobacco has a toxic effect on gum tissue, and can interfere

with blood flow. Smoking also stains the heck out of teeth, is a direct cause of oral cancer, and can contribute to bad breath.

• Drinking alcohol. Drinking can

contribute to oral problems indirectly by resulting in a dehydrated mouth, which can allow bacteria to run rampant. In addition, people who have alcohol addiction issues are probably less likely to consistently follow good dental care habits.

• Changes in weight.

For those who wear dentures, changes in body weight tend to affect the way dentures fit. Just as weight gain or loss affects the way clothes fit, that gain or loss also affects the gum pads on which dentures rest. To help maintain a healthy weight and fight tooth decay,

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll didn’t try to be all things to all people. He didn’t try to change who he was or alter his approach. Instead, he hired coaches with different personalities. I must admit that I didn’t notice this when I was playing for him in Pittsburgh, but it became apparent once I was on the Steelers’ staff for a while. He always looked for good football coaches who were also good people and who had different strengths that they brought to the team. For instance, he was more of a teacher than a motivator, so having coaches on the staff who were more emotional was im-

portant. He taught a certain way, but he hired other guys who taught differently. It was a sign of a mature leader. I took that lesson with me. I learned where I was strong and where I needed support. Self-evaluation may seem like a daunting and unending task, but with these 7 action steps, you will be a person who shows strong leadership.

Football Fudge • ¼ cup butter • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder • 1 cup powdered sugar

• 1 teaspoon milk • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter • White gel frosting or melted white chocolate

1. Melt butter in a microwave-safe mixing bowl on high for 30 to 45 seconds. 2. Add the remaining ingredients in order, mixing well after each addition. 3. Scoop out rounded tablespoonfuls onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Shape into ovals and press down slightly. 4. Refrigerate for one hour. Use frosting or melted chocolate to pipe stitching onto footballs.

Can I start?” As much as you are able, begin your meal with a prayer of thanks after you’re all seated. As I fixed dinner the other night for my husband and children, I was so pleased that we would be eating together as a family. “Yes!” I thought. “Score one for mom.” In the middle of a busy week, victory was in sight—sitting down and enjoying our time together. Unfortunately, within minutes of taking the first bite I broke one of the five rules for eating together as a family—I allowed the conversation to veer into controversial territory. My son and I started discussing the consequences he had incurred because he hadn’t followed the after school homework rules he’d agreed to. Faster than you can say, eat your peas, please, the mood was broken. So avoid my failure during family meals and follow these five rules for eating together as a family.

1. Keep controversy at bay

The usually taboo topics of politics and religion are actually great topics for family dinners. What’s not okay is bringing up tension-filled family subjects like bills, school trouble, or problems with how your kids are doing their chores or how they’re treating their siblings. You’ll also want to avoid constantly correcting your child’s meal time behavior. If you do have a manners-challenged child like I do, give them a pep talk before you sit down to dinner. “Josh, if you want to get free time after dinner, you’ll need to have good manners while we’re eating. I’ll give you one warning, and that’s it. Okay?”

2. Choose simple foods over stress.

Meat preparation freezes me in my tracks — trying to decide what to do with a shoulder of beef, a leg of lamb, or a veal cutlet overwhelms me, but side dishes are no problem. So instead of letting my main dish dread derail my plans

There’s nothing he enjoys more than hogging the spotlight during family gatherings. So we have to remind him to let his sister talk too, and to listen to her when she does. Awareness Month Gold Ribbon Heroes: Why Gold Ribbon Heroes Matter For many children diagnosed with childhood cancer, the prognosis now is significantly better than it was only 40 years ago; in fact, more than 80% of children with cancer will now survive five years and even longer, as compared Gold Ribbon Heroes LRto a fiveyear survival rate of only 58% in the mid-1970s. Yet for the children who are struggling to be one of those 80%, the road is always difficult, often painful, and never straight and narrow. Luckily, these children don’t have to travel the road to survival by themselves. For as strong and as courageous as these children are, they are surrounding by loving, dedicated individuals who every day find the strength, wisdom, and commitment to help cancer’s youngest warriors on their journey, wherever it may lead. These individuals play a critical role in making the lives of children and families impacted by this terrible disease just a little bit easier.

Through the American Childhood Cancer Organization’s Gold Ribbon Hero Program, the ACCO seeks to celebrate as many of these important individuals as it can, to show the world just how important they are in helping and supporting cancer’s youngest and strongest warriors. Anyone can be a Gold Ribbons Hero. A Gold Ribbon Hero may be the child who astounds us with strength and perseverance, a parent who continues to show courage and bravery even when their heart is breaking, a medical practitioner who cares so deeply about each and every patient, or a researcher who continues to persevere in the ongoing search for the next miracle cure. These individuals are an inspiration and a positive example for everyone in the childhood cancer community and beyond.

How Can You Help Raise Awareness This September? Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The freedom and attention received during summer vacation abruptly ends at the first day of school. Without warning, schedules shift – the coming and going, eating, exercising, and freedom may be limited while you spend time on your lessons. Their human playmates of summer suddenly have new interests and friends. All of this can create a lot of anxiety in our pets. This stress adds insecurity and affects our pets in many ways. It can cause behavior problems such as chewing, soiling in the house, barking with dogs or clawing furniture with cats. These problems can be troubling to us, but more serious health problems can also occur with your pet. The distressed pet may experience vomiting, diarrhea, skin issues, or eating problems. Eating problems may range from not eating at all to eating things they shouldn’t, such as dirt, plants, socks, toys, etc. This can lead to emergency medical problems as these objects can easily get caught in the intestinal tract and can be deadly. Crating or sectioning off a safe pet area is always the best solution to this when you’re not home to supervise. You wouldn’t leave a toddler with free run, without supervision; and you shouldn’t with your 4-legged children either. It is important that you make them as comfortable as possible. Provide a bed, pillow, or blanket; and even when tempted, don’t leave them with a chewy. That is for when they are under supervision. Get an interactive but safe toy to leave with them, which will keep them safe and occupied. Most importantly, NEVER send them to their crate/room as a punishment! This is to be their “safe” zone; and a treat to get them in their “house”(as we call it) will associate good things, not bad, with their space. When you associate it with punishment they will never think of it as their “safe” place.

Today we will talk a little bit about how sports and especially Jiu-jitsu can help your children with their daily routine and why regular sports practice is such an important component of school development. A recent study conducted by The Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine study screened 12,000 6 to 18-year-old children and concluded that physical activity contributes to cognition, increasing the blood supply and oxygen to the brain, decreasing stress and improving concentration and humor. Nowdays, children are spending less time throughout the day doing physical activity and more time in front of their computer screens. While access to the internet and fast information can be good, too much time in front of the screen can also be detrimental. As parents we must be very careful with both how and how much our children use technology. We at American Top Team ST Pete are sport educators and we know how important it is to have a good balance in order to be successful at school. So school and Jiu-jitsu can make your child a more complete human being. Here are just a few of the advantages Jiu-jitsu training can have on your children: • Most children spend 7 hours or more a day at school. As a result, many parents end up signing their children up in an after school “babysitting” program because there are no other options. Children get stressed and get tired from sitting down for many hours. What a difference

though, just one hour of sports practice can make on the wellbeing of your child! It helps them grow physically, helps prevent injuries and increases the blood supply to their brains. Jiu-jitsu is a complete sport that moves all muscles of the body. • Increased focused physical activity also has been proven to help greatly with children’s behavior! As Jiu-jitsu is an individual sport, it will help children develop the competitive instinct they own. Children learn how to win and how to lose. We must teach children how to deal with the loss and how to learn from it. And then start all over again to accomplish the goal and win and to become a victorious human being. Jiu-jitsu teaches this every single day. This will also help them understand that a bad test today can motivate them to study more and do a better test tomorrow. • Physical activities also develop self discipline which will carry over into the classroom. As with most things in life, learning is developed through habit and routine. With Jiu-Jitsu children learn on TATAMI that they must respect their SESEi master and after some months they understand that this should be the same type of respect they show their school teacher, who studied for years to teach them and prepare them for their future. Discipline is taught from how the uniform is to be worn, to the respect they should have for their training friends.

Since he was little, he went to day cares where he had some behavior issues and even, “bullying” other children. Jorge was diagnosed with DDI (Dissociative identity disorder) and he was prescribed

This is just one of the examples of how Jiu-jitsu helps different personalities. Today Jorge does not take any medication and he is in a special class at school, collecting many medals at home. Although Jiu-jitsu is an individual sport, it cannot be practiced without an opponent. At American Top Tem ST Pete students are taught the importance of team work. Teaching a position to a friend will make you grow. That will be your best training. 1. SET GOALS

One of the biggest lessons for parents of school-age children is learning how to handle homework, and how best to help their children meet academic challenges. Sometimes, parents think helping their child complete homework, or even doing their child’s homework for him, will help him achieve better grades in school. Often, it’s just the opposite, creating a situation where children have not learned the concepts they are later tested on in the classroom.

2. KNOW YOUR CHILD

Instead, parents should create a homework environment that is conducive to their child efficiently tackling school tasks. At Sylvan Learning we recommend the following tips to help parents develop a homework plan for back-to-school success:

Help your child set attainable goals for each class and help her identify what will need to be done to reach each goal. For example, to get an A in American History she will need to turn in all her homework, participate in class, etc. Because each child is special, with different learning styles and academic needs, it’s important to personalize the learning process. Children learn in at least eight different ways, according to the Multiple Intelligences Theory: visually, verbally, physically, mathematically, musically, naturalistically, through group activity or through quiet thinking time. If you help your child work within his style, he will work more effectively.

3. CREATE A HOMEWORK ZONE

Set up an area in your home for studying, complete with a dictionary, paper and pens. Make sure the area is free from potential distractions and that study tools are at your

child’s fingertips to keep him focused on homework.

4. DEVELOP CLASS FILES

Develop a color-coded file for each of your child’s classes. Make separate tabs for homework assignments, exams and projects, so your child can refer back to class materials when studying for comprehensive tests.

5. SET WEEKLY MILESTONES

For big projects or exams, get a large calendar for your child’s desk area and help him set short timelines to ensure projects and studying aren’t left until the last minute. Celebrate with your child when each milestone is met. By working with your child to develop a plan to efficiently complete homework tasks, you will find higher grades, fewer homework headaches and a more confident child as a result. CareFest was an outgrowth of Super Bowl XXXV which was held in Tampa and was a sanctioned event of the Super Bowl. This compassion festival, done the week prior to the Super Bowl had over 1,400 volunteers serve approximately 12,000 attendees. Close to 200 churches and business combined their resources along with Somebody Cares Tampa Bay and Operation Blessing. Over 120,000 lbs. of groceries were distributed, three truckloads of clothes, lunches were served to all participants, three sports clinics hosted by active professional athletes, games, adult and youth music and more was provided. Afterwards, Daniel Bernard, President of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay, was asked to share with the heads of various departments of the City of Tampa. From this meeting where Daniel shared the desire of churches to serve the city, CareFest was born.

“The object of CareFest is literally to do all the good we can by all the means we can,” shared Bernard. “CareFest unites churches, businesses, organizations and cities for the purpose of demonstrating God’s love in practical ways.” For the past 15 years in September, Somebody Cares Tampa Bay (SCTB) has mobilized local churches, community agencies, and businesses to meet the practical needs of our communities through a weeklong CareFest. “The object of this week is literally to do all the good we can by all the means we can. During this week we work with area churches and ministries to minister the love of God through practical acts of kindness such as passing out bags of food, delivering care packages, and giving care coupons to friends, neighbors and family members.”

CareFest

This week of caring culminates in a day-long work day in which hundreds of volunteers in different locations throughout our service area come together to beautify and repair homes and neighborhoods. These projects are identified through local government offices, churches and ministries. At the end of the day the volunteers and the people who have been helped come together to recognize and celebrate their accomplishments. Free food and drinks are provided for all involved. In addition, each year a “Care Cup” trophy is awarded to the location with the largest number of volunteers. These celebrations also provide very important opportunities for area churches to connect with people in need and the general community. Approximately 6,000 volunteers and over 150 partners from area churches, businesses and other non-profit ministries are involved in CareFest on an annual basis.

CareFest not only blesses the recipients of the services and the volunteers, but it serves to further unify the community in Tampa Bay. This week of caring provides the additional and very powerful benefit of introducing churches, businesses, ministries and individuals to each other’s work in the area. On September 30, CareFest St. Pete 2017 starts and ends at Lake Vista Park with check-in and light morning refreshments at 7:30 a.m., followed by projects conducted from 8 a.m. to Noon. Once finished at their project site, participants are invited back to Lake Vista Park for volunteer recognition, lunch and entertainment between noon and 1:30 p.m. The event wraps up with CareFest organizers and the mayor presenting certificates to all volunteer groups.

Lunch Pals mentoring program earns state award

Cindy McGarrigle of Regions Bank delivered hundreds of new shoes and socks for our students this week.

The Lunch Pals mentoring program was selected as the Elementary School Level winner of the 2017 Florida Association of Partners in Education Community Engagement Volunteer Award. As a result, district representatives will present the program in September at the 2017 Fall Leadership Conference in Orlando. The conference is hosted by the Florida Department of Education in conjunction with the 2017 Educational Strategies and Student Engagement Institute. The award also comes with a $500 prize.

The donations will go to students at Title I schools, which have high percentages of children from lowincome families. The items were donated by workers at local branches and community members as part of the bank’s Share the Good campaign.

Lunch Pals started in 2013 and allows employees of companies and community organizations to mentor 30 minutes once a week during a student’s lunch. The program started with one school and company, Mt. Vernon Elementary and Raymond James. Now, there are 51 community partners and businesses. At the end of 2016-17 school year, there were 707 students being mentored in the Lunch Pals program.

1. Teachers love your kids more than you know.

I’m not a teacher, but I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by them on all sides: both of my parents, both siblings, and their wives, plus a countless list of friends, aunts, uncles and cousins. Education is our family thing (and I’m the oddball for choosing a different career path). What all this exposure to veteran teachers gives me, however, is a unique insider/outsider perspective. Sometimes we lose focus on the fact that the education of our children should be a partnership–a team pursuit wherein parents and teachers are all in for the goal of equipping and nurturing your child to be all God made him to be. When things get tough or a child is struggling, the parent-teacher relationship can become tense. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Our educational system isn’t perfect, but there are countless men and women who have devoted their

Let’s face it: Education isn’t an easy or especially lucrative career choice. With today’s pressure to meet standardized testing benchmarks while also caring for the social and emotional needs of kids from diverse circumstances, it’s uphill all the way. So why do they do it? With rare exception, it’s because they really do care. They worry about your kids when they lie down at night. They find themselves pondering in the grocery store line how to help a kid who’s “stuck” academically to have a breakthrough. So when you’re frustrated with your child’s teacher for whatever reason, understand that the problem is likely not a lack of concern on their part. Communicate about your concerns, but approach them as a teammate, not as the opposition.

3. Read early. Read often. Then read some more. I posed this question to a fantastic preschool teacher who taught my oldest back in the day. She said, “I can tell almost immediately when 4K children are placed in my classroom which ones have been read to a great deal since infancy. They’re better students.” Interestingly, I received the same feedback from a high school English teacher. If, despite your best efforts, your child doesn’t love to read alone, keep reading aloud to them throughout childhood.

4. Even honest kids get things wrong sometimes. One seasoned teacher put it to me this way: “I tell my parents that if they’ll believe only about half of what their child says about me, I’ll extend the same courtesy

But your child’s teacher has 20+ little faces sitting in front of her all day (many times even through her lunch “break”) who demand her attention and engagement. My teacher friends say that often they need to wait until the planning period or after school to respond to communication in order to give the children the focus and supervision they deserve. If your question or communication is time-sen-

7. Taking the summer off from all learning is a bad idea. Especially in the lower grades (think kindergarten-2nd grade), children are like sponges. They are learning a great deal, particularly in the area of reading and language arts, but they lose skills if they don’t continue to use them. You don’t have to put together a full-on summer homeschool curriculum, but do keep your child reading and engaging with learning a little bit each day during the break. They’ll be in much better shape on the first day of school and ready to take off with new skills!

Florida Manatee: The Story of “Martide” If you are fortunate enough to enjoy Florida’s warm coastal waters and springs, you might have the opportunity to see a unique species of marine mammal, the Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee. Manatees are often referred to as “sea cows” because they are herbivores that graze on freshwater and saltwater plants. Florida manatees were once on the brink of extinction. There are natural threats to manatees in the wild, like cold stress, pneumonia and other diseases, but much more often manatees are affected by human-related activities like boating accidents, getting trapped in flood control structures, swallowing fish hooks and litter, and harmful algal blooms. The story of one of those manatee patients follows. A young male manatee named “Martide,” was rescued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) after stranding himself on a beach, suffering from seizures. Martide had been poisoned by red tide, a seasonal toxic algal bloom that harms many marine animals. Red tide affects the manatee’s nervous system and they

are unable to control their muscles. First, FWC had to get Martide safely to the Zoo’s Manatee Hospital in a big box truck. Manatees can be safely out of the water for a few hours, but his rescuers misted him with water to keep his skin moist. Once Martide reached the Zoo, a dozen members of the staff and FWC volunteers lifted him off the truck and into a special sling, attached to a large crane. The crane then lifted him into Medical Pool 1 where the Zoo’s veterinary staff weighed and measured him, took his vital signs, and started treatment for his condition. Martide, like other manatees infected with red tide, received 24/7 care from the Zoo staff until the toxin was out of his system and he regained control of his muscles. For some red tide manatees, rehabilitation can take as much as 2-3 years. Martide spent only a month in the Manatee Hospital before he fully recovered and could be returned to the wild. Martide is just one of our success stories. Since 1991, the David A. Straz Manatee Hospital at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has treated over 400 Florida manatees. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Q: Our second child is almost 3 years old. She doesn’t respond to any of the parenting strategies that worked well with her older sister. We’re stumped and stressed. What are we doing wrong?

Many parents think raising children is like following a recipe—use the same ingredients every time, and the cookies always come out the same, right? We know that’s not quite the case.

Children are individuals. They don’t all share the same talents, aptitudes and perceptions. And one daughter may be a great athlete, while her sister might be a brilliant musician. Each child has his or her own way of viewing, interpreting and engaging in their world.

Treating each child the same way makes sense to us because we think we’re being fair. It may be fair, but it’s not really most effective. Core values—honesty, respect, etc.—should be expected of everyone in the home. But that leaves plenty of room to tailor your expectations to your child’s personality. Push some kids to work harder in school, and

Q: Our daughter is painfully shy. As a toddler, she would run behind her mom’s legs when guests visited. Even now, as a young teenager, she struggles to look people in the eye. She does well in school, but we’re still concerned. How can we help our girl overcome her fear of social interaction? Jim: First, let’s clarify a common misconception. Author Susan Cain points out: “Shyness is the fear of social disapproval or humiliation, while introversion is a preference for environments that are not overstimulating.” Some introverts are shy, and many shy people are introverted. But those aren’t synonymous terms. Shyness is usually a personality trait. It’s not that children want to feel timid around people; they just do. With some

patience and encouragement, parents can help shy children develop confidence in social settings. Shy people feel most timid in unfamiliar situations. An obvious solution is to make those settings feel more predictable and routine. Create opportunities for your daughter to venture into unknown territory with you by her side. Have her order her own meal at a restaurant, for example. Or accompany her while she asks a sales associate a question. The first few times you may even coach her in what to say. But you’ll gradually be able to pull back until she’s handling the situation on her own. Remember, too, that you’ll probably have to repeat this process for each new situation. Ordering her own meal, for example, won’t help her feel any more prepared to make phone calls or set appointments. But with each new task she conquers, her overall confidence should grow.

CHILD HAS FEAR OF GOING TO A NEW SCHOOL

A shy child will likely always be shy. But handled properly, shyness can be a gift. Shy kids tend to grow up to be sensitive, caring adults, who show a high degree of compassion for others. They just need some help from you to learn how to manage their shyness well.

Q: We moved to a new school district over the summer; now our second-grader is expressing fear of riding the bus. He did OK last year, so I don’t understand this development. It’s too far for him to walk, and my wife and I both work, so we can’t drive him every day. What can we do?

To do that, we have to be willing to step outside of ourselves and make our spouse’s needs a priority. The love we feel when we’re dating is usually all about our needs being met. I think that’s why Maggie Gallagher describes marriage as a “bold” move. Infatuation eventually wears off. When it does, we can only experience true, fulfilling love if we’re willing to serve our spouse and fill each other’s gaps. It’s bold, idealistic and very much worth it.

Hi, I’m Dr. James Dobson, with My Family Talk. You know, one of the most enjoyable things to having an international radio program is the thousands of cards and letters I get from listeners. Grandparents, let me encourage you to stay close to your grandchildren. Don’t meddle, but be available. And parents— do what you can to foster closeness with your moms and dads. Your kids need them more than you might think.
