National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day or National Brownie Day is, one of those could easily become my new favorite.

Parent to Parent As obscure holidays go, there is definitely something out there for everyone, and everyone has their own favorites for different reasons. My dad always liked the fact that I who, with the possible exception of my younger sister, hates pickles more than anyone I know, have a birthday that every 5 or 6 years falls on the first day of International Pickle Week. I’m partial to National Doughnut Day myself, although if someone can tell me when

Ten-year-old Haylee’s favorite is coming up this month. January 18, it turns out, is better known as National Winnie-the-Pooh Day. The day itself was selected because it is the birthday of A. A. Milne, the author of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. What I don’t know is whether “national” refers to the United States, where Pooh is the second-most popular cartoon character, or England, where the stories were written, or somewhere else altogether. But even if it isn’t a U.S. “national” holiday, it is still a very important one. So much so that Haylee made sure to set up reminders on our phones so we won’t miss the occasion. So how does one celebrate National Winnie-thePooh Day anyway? On National Doughnut Day, the obvious answer is to eat a doughnut (or several). And during International Pickle Week, I won’t be eating any pickles, thank you; but if you want to, well more power to you! Since the 18th is a school day this year, a trip to visit Pooh and his friends at Magic Kingdom is not going to be an option. So Haylee has decided that the next

best option is to throw a big party. She will make a cake (carrot cake for Rabbit of course, with some honey added in for Pooh) and the whole family will play Pooh sticks and watch movies with her stuffed animals. Unfortunately, the highly-anticipated, Goodbye Christopher Robin, won’t be released on DVD quite in time for the holiday. It comes out the following Tuesday. So maybe we’ll just have to turn National Winnie-the-Pooh Day into Winnie-the-Pooh Week and spread out our celebration a little bit. Whatever your plans for the day (or week), Haylee would like to wish all of you a very happy National Winnie-the-Pooh Day! Until next time,

Jennifer

I think you can develop habits in players or in children either positively or negatively. When I’m coaching the defensive line for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers it’s easy to say, “Don’t be offside!” But a better way to say it might be, “Watch the ball and try to get a jump on it. As soon as that ball moves that’s when you move.” I’m saying the same thing but in a positive instead of a negative way.

DUNGY DIARIES

by Tony Dungy In November baseball lost one of the greatest pitchers of all time in Roy Halladay who passed away in a plane crash. There were many tributes to him, but one thing expressed over and over again was his work ethic. He would always be the first person at the ballpark to work out. He learned how to develop good habits, such as discipline and hard work. Habits such as these made him into a sure bet Hall of Famer.

We hear a lot of talk about keeping kids away from bad habits. Bad habits lead to bad behavior, which ultimately brings a difficult and painful life. That’s not what we want for our children. We want to develop in them the opposite. People often ask me about developing positive habits. How do you do it? How do you guide children as a parent? In order to do it, I go back to my coaching experience. Here’s how to develop good habits in your children.

I think we need to do the same with our kids. Rather than say, “Don’t be disrespectful,” instruct them to use their manners and be respectful. Stressing and building the positive habits by telling them what to do rather than what not to do is a better way. Sometimes, of course, there is going to have to be a negative, but I have found that talking about the behavior that I want to see is much better than talking about the behavior I don’t want to see.

Two Ways An Orthodontist Can Increase Your Smile And Self Esteem by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics

An orthodontist provides a unique kind of therapy to improve your self esteem. Though teeth clearly serve a functional role in our lives, an orthodontist never ignores their aesthetic role. Addressing both the functional and aesthetic roles of teeth achieves the best patient outcome. Improving the smile is an external change with dramatic internal consequences. What can both a therapist and orthodontist achieve for the patient? Patients of all ages consistently report a significant boost to their self esteem after bite and teeth alignment.

1. Functional bite alignment The human bite is defined as the way teeth fit together. A functional bite makes chewing and swallowing comfortable. The action of eating is safe for the rest of the teeth and the other soft tissues in the mouth. Patients no longer fear social situations that involve eating in front of others. Almost every gathering with family and friends, all holidays and special occasions, includes a tradition of food. What would Thanksgiving

be without turkey and stuffing? How about having a Fourth of July barbeque with no hamburgers and corn on the cob? An orthodontist can help achieve a comfortable bite, which allows you to enjoy the events in your life, along with the snacks and refreshments, without worrying about the act of chewing. A proper bite impacts speech and pronunciation. It allows for easy conversation with other guests. In our often loud and always foodfocused culture, patients enjoy more moments with others rather than missing opportunities to connect.

conveys a team player attitude that might score you the job. A full smile lights up a room and a photograph. The owner of straight teeth proudly grins when happy

2. Aesthetic smile appearance Unlike a favorite handbag, a flashy necklace, or a trendy scarf; our smile is an accessory we never take off. A confident smile conveys friendliness to your new acquaintance, happiness to someone you love, and collaboration to your interviewer for a new job. An aesthetically pleasing grin is always sexy when you are searching for your soul-mate. A positive smile

Dental Fun Fact

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. That being said, drinking soda really does a number on one’s teeth. People who drink 3 or more sugary sodas daily have 62% more dental decay. So, put down the pop and sports drinks and pick up some nice fresh water instead.

Dr. Nick Reynolds “Since as long as I can remember, it’s been my goal to pursue a career in which I can work with my hands, help someone everyday, be artistic, strive for perfection, and provide for my community. Orthodontics is the perfect marriage of all those things. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else! My goal at Northeast Orthodontics is to provide the children and adults of St. Petersburg with handsome and beautiful smiles while providing first class service, state of the art care, and a friendly atmosphere.” www.gulfcoastfamily.org

The New Year is the time for a fresh start. It brings a feeling of starting over, and an opportunity to improve all areas of your life. In the New Year, take some time to complete projects you’ve been putting off for months. You can create an even better home for you and your family by decluttering and organizing your home.

Add shelves

Follow these tips for easy and quick ways to de-clutter your home.

This challenge comes from BecomingMinimalist.com, and is a simple project to add to your routine. Clean and organize by choosing 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 to return to a proper place in your home. This helps you organize, declutter, and give to a good cause all at the same time!

Keep things at arms reach

Keep items you use daily somewhere where they can be easily reached, whether that’s in a basket, on a shelf, or in a cabinet. Store everything that is used sparingly on a higher shelf or in the garage or attic. It will be easier to find what you need when you need it.

If your home is cluttered adding more furniture won’t help. Instead of adding a bookshelf or desk, add wall shelving. You’ll have room for books, picture frames, paperwork, and even a television without cluttering your home with more furniture.

Garage storage

Make your garage your main storage area. Use old dressers and other furniture to store seasonal items and items you don’t use daily. Paint the furniture the same color to create a unified look.

Get rid of broken items

There’s no point in keeping items that are broken or unused, they’re just taking up precious space in your home. If you haven’t used it or gotten it fixed in the past six months, you probably never will. Throw it out or donate it to make room for something new.

Deal with one room at a time

Use things up

Go through these tasks every few months to help maintain an organized home. A decluttered home can give you and your family peace of mind – and room for something new.

It’s a habit to save special items for special occasions, whether it’s fancy bath soap or an expensive spice. Stop saving these things for the right time,

TRIPS TANK

Consisting of more than sixty original screen-used costumes and props from all seven Star Wars films, innumerable pages of original concept art and paintings and all the love and creativity used to bring a galaxy far, far away to life, Star Wars and the Power of Costume is a must-see event for even the most casual Star Wars fan. The exhibit opened in November and will be at the MFA till April 1st, giving anyone who might travel to the Tampa Bay area the perfect opportunity to witness the living art of

the greatest space opera to grace our theater screens. The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg has dedicated a substantial amount of space to the exhibit, ensuring that the rooms never feel claustrophobic and lending an austere grandness to the entire experience through some truly ingenious uses of lighting. Like most selfguided exhibits, your ticket to Star Wars and the Power of Costume entitles you to an audio handset that gives details

about the costumes and designs when prompted. Most rooms in the exhibit are centered around a particular theme such as “Royalty and Beyond,” “Outlaws and Outsiders,” “Droid Designs,” or “Jedi vs. Sith,” - an intriguing way to arrange the various costumes and props that works far better than simple chronology to compare and contrast design and craftsmanship across the saga.

see entering the exhibit is the original storyboard drawing of the opening scene to “The Star Wars,” and it perfectly sets the tone for your experience. Virtually every room after has design sketches and paintings and storyboard pages covering the walls, begging for your attention. And every one of them is an original, pulled from the Lucas film Archives just for this exhibit.

Star Wars and the Power of Costume has a refreshing focus towards the Prequel Trilogy, ensuring that all parts of the saga are represented as equally as possible. But many Star Wars fans will likely want to visit the MFA just for the costumes of the Original Trilogy. The costumes are remarkably well-preserved, allowing the audience to get closer than they ever have to a piece of film history. Just a few of the pieces shown are Princess Leia’s white gown and slave bikini, Luke Skywalker’s Jedi robes, and even a full set of Boba Fett’s original armor. Something that may take visitors by surprise is the amount of concept art posted in the exhibit. The very first artifact you

ou can’t do it unless “ Yyou can imagine it.” — George Lucas

In addition to all the costumes, many props were also scattered throughout the exhibit — including Watto’s chance cubes and even Palpatine’s fingernails. But the most spectacular prop in the entire exhibit is the original Yoda puppet and costume from Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. This is the one piece that is worth the price of admission in and of itself, giving Star Wars fans in the area absolutely no excuse to visit the exhibit! If you are brand new to the Star Wars universe, then Star Wars and the Power of Costume is your first step into a larger world: the world of behind-the-scenes. Every Star Wars fan should learn about how much work went into bringing the stories to the screen, and one major part of that are these incredibly detailed and realistic costumes.

Apart from a new appreciation for the filmmakers and costume designers, diehard Star Wars fans who already know all the trivia will come away with a sense of awe and inspiration. Normal people got paid to create this living artwork, and in most cases probably didn’t even stop to realize that the result would be so powerful. Star Wars and the Power of Costume is a must-see event. It is absolutely impossible to respect the craftsmanship fully without seeing them up close for yourself, and when you’re done you’ll want to pop in your favorite chapter of the Star Wars saga just to look again at the costumes. We highly recommend the experience to anyone with an interest in film history, modern art, or the cultures and society of a certain galaxy far, far away…

TRIPS TANK George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala.

• Military-influenced uniforms of the Imperial Stormtrooper, Senate Guard and TIE Fighter Pilot

• Intergalactic outfits of Senators Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and Mas Amedda

• Yak hair and mohair costume of Chewbacca

• Fierce armor of mercenary bounty hunters Jango Fett, Boba Fett and Zam Wesell

The costumes in exhibit reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the Star Wars story. Featured costumes include: • Monk-like robes of Jedi masters ObiWan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker • Intimidating suit and complex breathing apparatus of Darth Vader

Lowry Park Zoo got a baby Pygmy Hippopotamus for Christmas

by Lee Ann Rottman

This past December, The Lowry Park Zoo was blessed with an adorable baby pygmy hippo and later they revealed that this little miracle is a baby girl. Mom Zsa Zsa and calf are doing great—the baby girl has grown from the size of a loaf of bread to the size of a plump little watermelon. She also has gained confidence and will now run into the pool by herself. She is keeping her mom busy with her rambunctious ways but Zsa Zsa is an experienced mom and seems to take it all in stride.

As the VP of Conservation, I have been asked a lot lately why is this birth significant. When there is an adorable baby in front of you, it is often hard to think about her wild ancestors and what her birth means on a bigger scale for both the Zoo and her species. Let me start by saying, Pygmy hippos are both rare and unique. Pygmy hippos are found in interior forests of West Africa including the countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. As a shy reclusive species little is known about their habits in the

wild. It is estimated that only around 3,000 are left in the wild and due to rapid habitat loss this species is now considered endangered. So what does this mean? With such a small surviving population, steps are needed to help protect this species from vanishing. Researchers in Africa are working hard to learn more about pygmy hippo behavior while also working with the local communities within and around its range to help

protect this valuable species and habitat. At the Zoo, our pygmy hippos are part of a Species Survival Plan that works to preserve this species in zoos and aquariums while also bringing awareness to the conservation needs of this species in the wild.

Our kids love parties and even if the party is for mom and dad to watch a big game, they love to feel a part of all of the excitement. Having them help with the food preparation is a great way to help them get involved. This Seven-Layer Bean Dip is a simple appetizer that your kids will have a blast helping to prepare. The Mexican dip is very easy to make, is fairly healthy, tastes great and looks nice in a party setting! Also the individual serving cups are great at helping to stop the “double dippers.”

Individual 7-layer Bean Dip • 15-ounce can refried beans • 16-ounce container sour cream • 16-ounce container guacamole

• 8 ounces salsa • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese

• Shredded lettuce • Chopped tomato

1. Warm beans slightly in microwave until soft, not hot (about 30 seconds). Spread ¼ cup into the bottom of 8 clear plastic cups. 2. Spread ¼ cup each of sour cream and guacamole over beans. 3. Spoon 2 tablespoons salsa over guacamole. 4. Top with cheese, lettuce, and tomato. 5. Serve with tortilla chips.

The Family Table

Get Ready for the Superbowl By Leanne Ely (The Dinner Diva) The Super Bowl cometh, as all self-respecting football fans know. And if you’re having a few folks over to watch the big game, that means you get to supply the food as well as the tube. This means, too, that you will be entertaining. Does that freak you out? The very word “entertaining” can be hugely intimidating, conjuring up images of lavish spreads, immaculately appointed homes and other visions of magazine living. It is time to get a reality check and get to the heart of the matter. First off, let’s chuck the word “entertaining.” What I’m talking about today isn’t about doing the Martha thing at all — it’s about hospitality. Hospitality isn’t something one is talented in and another is not — it is something that is cultivated, much like a plant. All it takes is a welcoming home, a good meal (I can help you with that) and a warm and welcoming attitude (that’s your department). Oh, and for the Super Bowl, a nice big TV screen! If you’re going to practice hospitality, you need to keep your perspective — don’t invite people over who are going to scare you if you’re a newbie at this. You need allies at this time — comrades, amigos. You don’t need to be intimidated as you take your first baby steps at hospitality.

The first rule is to keep it simple. I would suggest a big crock-pot filled with some terrific chili, a big green salad, some cornbread and of course, the right set of friends to enjoy it all. The kind of friends that you ask to bring dessert — that’s the type of guest you want for this kind of party.

Set your buffet table with a red and white checkered tablecloth, grab some flowers and throw them in a pitcher for a country effect. Wrap the silverware up in the napkins (I’d use paper napkins), toss the wrapped silverware into a basket, stack the bowls next to the chili, with a stack of larger dinner plates, so the salad and corn muffin can go on the side of the plate. The plate will act as a tray for the bowl and the rest of the food will go on the “tray.” Make sense? I hope so. Have fun with your party and may the best team win!

Happy. Secure. Inspired. Students with a 504 Plan or IEP may now qualify for a McKay Scholarship!

January Family of the Month

Meet the Turner Family The Turners, GCF’s Family of the Month, lived in small town North Carolina for several years before moving to the Bay area. During those years, Billy and Dina grew up, met and married, and began raising a fun-loving family – all of whom are crazy about Star Wars! Apparently, the “Force” was strong with them from the beginning, for though Billy and Dina lived in nearby small towns, they met in Raleigh – in a most unusual way. It was a sorority function at North Carolina State, their alma mater. Each sorority sister borrowed a tie from a guy she chose for another girl – and then gave it to that sister to wear; and the tie guy had to find his blind date among the girls. Dina’s best friend had given her Billy’s tie. She wore it to the event; and that night, Billy found Dina by finding his own tie – and also found a wife, for their “tie” has remained strong ever since. They married and

now have 2 children: Rhett (11) and Evelyn (7). Seven years ago, the family moved to Pinellas County. They have found it to be home – a wonderful place to live, love, and work together; a home base from which to travel and play; an oasis for rest and relaxation. The Turner family lives life to the fullest in every way! Billy works for Oracle Corporation as a Solution Engineer for Business Software, and Dina is a 4th grade teacher at Pinellas Prep Academy. Rhett and Evelyn are involved in many activities both in and out of school. The family loves to travel, and they hope to make a crosscountry road trip one day – including an Alaska adventure! “I enjoy the unique experiences in my work,” Billy said. “The past 15 years of selling

and implementing business software has exposed me to all kinds of people, places, and things. I’ve traveled a lot and the opportunities have allowed me to find neat things and interesting places our family can visit.” Dina graduated with a business degree and worked in marketing for 10 years. “I loved it,” she said, “however, after having children, I didn’t want to go back to corporate America.” So Dina got her teaching certificate and began a new career. She appreciates the caring spirit at PPA that “truly feels like a family,” she shared. “What I enjoy most about teaching is my students. I do my best to instill a love of learning. The most rewarding part is when you see them engage and take ownership in their education.” The Turners consider themselves a “typical family that stays super busy with work, kids’

busy schedules, and lots of home projects.” But we at GCF think they are a bit extraordinary! They work hard. They play hard and relax well. Listen in: “We love spending the day at the beach, taking food to grill and staying until dark. We moved here for the beautiful white sandy beaches and the incredibly peaceful sunsets over the Gulf. We found so much more than that. We found a community that felt like the small towns we grew up in. We found a community with incredible outdoor adventures: community park playgrounds, bike trails, beaches, kayak adventures, and theme parks. Our kids grew up going to Busch Gardens on an average day! Who does that!?” Our community does! And we are so happy for your part with us! Congratulations to the Turners, Gulf Coast’s January Family of the Month!

If you would like to recommend a family to be featured as the family of the month, send a photo and a description of what makes your family unique to articles@gulfcoastfamily.org.

10 Family Resolutions to Keep This Year The beginning of a new year carries with it the inevitable looking back paired with the hope of a fresh start and second (or third) chances. As the clock moves ever closer to midnight on December 31st, we feel the need to promise to do better than we did last year. We resolve to lose weight, to be on time, to be better with our money…to stop smoking or drinking or swearing. By the time January 31st rolls around, many of us have had a relapse in our resolve. Part of the reason that we fail to keep these resolutions is that we attempt to tackle them on our own. So, this year, instead of making an individual promise that you’ll soon forget, why not make some resolutions as a family? You help hold each other accountable and can grow closer in the process. All Pro Dad would like to suggest 10 Family Resolutions to Keep Next Year. 1  A Weekly Family Game Night. Take a trip to the local bowling alley for a game. Or pile up the board games on the dining room table and have a tournament. The act of playing together fosters feelings of fun and family. Playing board games can teach children important social skills such as taking turns and how to be a good winner or loser. They also learn a lot about interpersonal communication as you talk and laugh together while you play the game. 2  Commit to One Healthy Eating Change. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different color vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking, or skipping sodas altogether. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet.

3  Turn off the TV. Television is a wonderful invention and not bad in and of itself, but in many homes, we use the TV as a buffer from communication. So, turn it off when you’re eating meals together. If you’re really feeling adventurous, try going without television one night a week. Who knows, you might discover that you don’t miss it at all. So take the plunge and try not watching TV. 4  Eat Dinner as a Family. Sharing a meal together, breakfast, lunch or dinner, is one way a family builds its identity and culture. Stories are shared, jokes are told, and family values are instilled. The act of coming together for a common meal teaches the importance of sharing and compromise, and helps younger members of the family understand problem solving and listening skills. 5  Be Quick to Apologize and Quick to Forgive. Let’s face it—we all mess up. When you mess up, be quick to apologize. When it’s your turn to be hurt, be quick to forgive. Forgiveness is good for your body, your relationships, and your place in the world. That’s reason enough. 6  Exercise Together. This resolution works well with #1 – 4. You could have a game of tennis, or miniature golf. Get out in the yard and play ball! Point out your end zones and have a game of scrimmage. Don’t have a football? Toss a Frisbee. The whole idea is to get outside and do something you and your family will enjoy.

7  Revisit your Childhood. Get down on the ground and roll around with your kids. Build a fort in the family room with couch cushions and sheets. Tell knock-knock jokes to each other. Just because you’re a grown-up, doesn’t mean you can’t be silly and have imaginative fun with the kids. In those moments of silliness, you can have serious bonding and build bridges for heart-felt communication. 8  Do Something New as a Family. Routine is a great thing when it comes to families, but that doesn’t mean to have to get stuck in a rut. Make a point to do something new as a family. Doing something new together will give you a common memory…so get out there and get adventurous together. 9  Make each Child Feel Special. It’s great to do things as a family unit, but it’s equally important to celebrate the individuality of your kids. Make a resolution to do something once a month with each of your children. Do something together that will make them feel special and valued. 10  Nurture your Relationship with your Wife. The best thing you can do for your children is to nurture your relationship with your wife. When your kids know that you value your wife as your first priority, they have a feeling of security and love that’s nearly unshakeable. Make a point to put that relationship first, and your family will benefit.

Benefits of Muay Thai By Ana Frias

Muay Thai / Kickboxing is a fighting art that was originated in Thailand (formerly Siam) 2000 years ago. It is a devastating striking art that blends techniques such as; kicks, knees, elbows, punches, and clinch work. Special care is taken in our Muay Thai classes at American Top Team St. Pete to protect students from injury while still benefiting from the full demands of the sport. This discipline was developed hundreds of years ago as a form of close-combat that utilizes the entire body as a weapon. Today, classes of Muay Thai represent a form of close-combat that utilizes the entire body as a weapon. While in ancient times Muay Thai was referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs,” our classes explain this today through the use of eight points of contact, where the body mimics weapons of war. The hands become the sword and dagger; the shins and forearms were hardened in training to act as armor against blows, and the elbow to fell opponents like a heavy mace or hammer; the legs and knees became the axe and staff. The body operated as one unit. The knees and elbows constantly searching and testing for an opening while grappling and trying to spin an enemy to the ground for the kill.

Muay Thai is becoming very popular on a global scale. It was recently accepted as an Olympic sport, finally gaining it’s deserved recognition. Our professional martial artists working and teaching at American Top Team St. Pete come from all sides of the fighting spectrum, and they all agree that Muay Thai is essential to becoming an all-around multifaceted fighter. Muay Thai is very different from the grappling techniques used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; clinch maneuvers are used to set up knee and elbow strikes or to throw your opponent to the ground. Since the sport requires that practitioners possess a large number of athletic qualities, the benefits that accompany learning this discipline are numerous.

Increased Cardiovascular Conditioning

Muay Thai classes combine both aerobic and anaerobic workouts, which places huge stress on your cardiopulmonary systems. With continued practice, your body will adapt to the demands of the sport, and improved cardiovascular performance is one of the payoffs.

Leg Strength

Kicking and footwork play a large role in Muay Thai. One movement that is distinctive to Muay Thai is the roundhouse kick.

Learning how to kick strengthens the musculature of the lower body. Every muscle in your lower body will benefit from practicing the various kicks and footwork drills incorporated in the sport. From muscle endurance, force production, agility, to just plain old good looking calves, Muay Thai is an option that delivers.

Core Strength

Generally when someone refers to their core, they’re referring to their abdominal muscles. This drives strength and conditioning professionals crazy. Your core is every single muscle located on your trunk, not your six pack. The rotational nature of all of the movements in the sport truly does strengthen your core. Getting punched in the body will also help a little. Striking, defensive movements, and clinching will all help the Muay Thai student develop a strong core.

Increased Hip Mobility

It won’t happen overnight, but spending time in our classes while kicking and kneeing movements will promote increased hip mobility. Having healthy

hips alone can save you from serious pain and numerous terrible medical conditions later in life. Just remember to do your foam rolling and stretching. Get an occasional massage and those hips of yours will feel amazing.

Stress Relief

Finally, this is probably the most important benefit Muay Thai classes can provide. The majority of us accumulate a fair amount of stress during the day. Having an outlet for that stress feels fantastic and can work wonders for your mental and physical health. Let’s face it, when you’re pissed off at work or stressed about bills, hitting something just feels good. Due to the fast-paced nature of the sport, you can’t trouble yourself with worry while training. You’ll get hit in the face or mess up the drill you’re working on. Practicing a martial art allows you to focus on yourself and nothing else.

Finding the RIGHT SCHOOL

Most of us want to give our children the best possible start in life, and that includes a solid education. However it has been said that the average family spends far more time evaluating appliances and automobiles then it does appraising the quality of their children’s schools. With choices ranging from traditional parochial and private schools to new pilot and charter schools, there are a multitude of choices for families to examine. So as parents we need to take the time to explore and investigate all of the options for our children. If you are among parents who are out looking at private school options, we hope that the following list of questions will be a help to you as you visit with school administrators and visit open house events.

Why Your Child’s

Education

What you can do: 1. Analyze Your Resources Now

is at Risk

by Susan Merrill, iMom.com

A few months ago, I got a raise of sorts. My fourth child graduated from college and got a job. I have just one child left on my payroll! So I got a raise, and he got a gift—a college degree debt-free. There are many things that go into the training up of a child, and one of them is education. Many parents are putting that education at risk because they aren’t planning for it. When you hold a little one in your arms, college seems so distant. But it is not. And when there are 2, 3 or 4 children to educate, it is amazing how much it can cost and how quickly 18 years fly by. We were shocked at the dent it made in our budget when we ended up with three of our five kids in school at the same time.

Two things saved our family from having to borrow money for college— Florida Prepaid College Plans, and scholarships. Watching our kids graduate, get jobs, and plan their own budgets to pay for cars, apartments, clothes, and food was amusing for Mark and me (they just had no idea how much everything costs), but thankfully it was doable for them. They managed because they had the advantage of graduating without debt. Seventy-one percent of students graduated in 2016 with student loan debt of $25,000 to $30,000. The average monthly payment was $350. For graduate students, the loan debt was greater, ranging from $40,000 to $140,000. And while $350 does not sound like a lot, to a graduate trying to build a life after college (wardrobe,

Determine what you are able to do to provide education for each of your children. A great tool to help with your analysis is the college cost calculator. You can access one at www.myfloridaprepaid.com/ what-we-offer/.

2. Research Available Options

Explore plans available in your state to help you accomplish your educational goals. We took advantage of the Florida Prepaid Plan. The states that have prepaid savings plans are Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

3. Familiarize Yourself with State Scholarships

Knowing the requirements your child will need to meet long before they enter high school will ensure that they don’t fall behind and can benefit. The state listing on this site: www.collegescholarships.org/ scholarships/states.htm will get you started.

When our oldest went to the University of Florida, we had Florida Prepaid and she qualified for Florida Bright Futures. The school would apply her Bright Futures Scholarship first, then Florida Prepaid would kick in. The net resulted in a $781 surplus. We received a check back for that amount and applied it to her housing. It was great. When our second child chose to go out of state, we still benefited from Florida Prepaid! We applied what we had saved in the Prepaid Plan to her housing and other expenses. The bottom line: don’t delay. I know that open enrollment has begun for Florida Prepaid and that monthly payments for a 4-year college degree are only about $130 a month for a newborn. with Jim Daly Q: The past three years I’ve made a New Year’s resolution to work out and lose weight. And every year I lost momentum within a few weeks. I feel guilty about breaking my promise to my family—and myself. What can I do differently this year? Jim: Many of us make some sort of resolution this time of year, and a lot of those involve healthier living. According to psychologists, guilt might get you to start exercising, but it’s unlikely to keep you going.

Dr. Segar says society has made the mistake of making exercise feel like a “chore” instead of the gift it really is. Studies have shown that people who run, walk or go to the gym together tend to exercise much more consistently than those who don’t. Some think it’s a matter of accountability, but it’s more likely due to the fact that most of us thrive in the company of like-minded friends. Among

BE STRATEGIC ABOUT STAYING COMMITTED TO NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS fellow exercisers, a warm camaraderie usually develops—where people connect on various levels, depending on the stage of life. So, I suggest that you find a friend or two—and you might soon find a new and healthy routine. As the saying goes, any load is easier to bear when someone else helps with the lifting. HOW TO HANDLE ENTERTAINMENT IN THE COMING YEAR

It’s a good idea to take a proactive approach to eating right and getting healthy exercise. But you need to be strategic. Michelle Segar, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, suggests the problem is that most of us start an exercise program out of guilt. We feel it’s something we have to do. But we’ll only continue exercising if we’re able to realize that not only does exercise help us feel better, it also improves the quality of our life.

Q: My husband and I have decided that this coming year, we want to take a strategic approach to how we handle entertainment in our household. Bob, if you could offer every parent just five tips of media advice, what would they be?

Bob Waliszewski, Director, Plugged In: That’s a great question. Here are my topfive suggestions: 1) Choose your family entertainment choices based on bettering yourselves. People give all sorts of reasons for their selections. Take movies, for instance. Many will watch a film simply because of the buzz, an ad they saw on TV, who’s in it, how it did financially opening weekend and/or the special effects budget. I’m not saying those things are unimportant. But first and foremost, we should be asking: “Will this film make me (and my kids) a better person? Will it inspire, encourage and uplift?” If it doesn’t, why bother? 2) Get into your kids’ entertainment world. Do you know your children’s favorite musicians? Video games? TV shows? Ask today. Then ask at least every six months. Research their choices at PluggedIn.com. 3) Know what your children are doing for entertainment when they’re at someone

5) Put things in writing. When our children were growing up, I wrote out a “family media constitution” that gave us some written guidelines to fall back on. We all signed and dated it. And it helped tremendously. I recommend you post it in a public place in your home.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR DEALING WITH A PICKY EATER Q: We have a 4-year-old daughter who is a very picky eater. Every meal seems to turn into a fight. Can you offer some practical ideas for easing this conflict? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: The first thing I’d suggest is this: Don’t panic over a finicky child who wants the same food for every meal. I know one family whose two young boys asked for corn dogs and pizza, no matter what was served. The parents didn’t give in to those requests, but also didn’t leave their sons at the table for hours until they finished their spinach. When kids are hungry, they eat. As a parent, you get to make the initial choice of what foods are going to be available in

the home and shop accordingly. But in that context, try involving your daughter in choosing and making the meals. When children participate in this way, in many cases they inevitably taste a variety of foods and get accustomed to a range of options. They also feel some ownership of the food. You can be creative and play “gas station” with your 4-year-old at meal times. Explain that filling up our bodies is a lot like driving and riding in cars. You can’t skip the gas station; and if you put the wrong fuel in, or none at all, the car/body won’t work right. The ideas are endless. As your child gets older, help her identify and distinguish “fuel” foods from “pleasure” foods. Of course, through the years I have also worked with several children who had sensory issues. This presents a different challenge. If you try various creative ideas to get your child to eat and nothing seems to work, she may need to be evaluated by an occupational therapist. An assessment can help determine if there are any sensory processing issues that create a reaction to certain textures or tastes when it comes to food.

HUSBAND ISN’T PULLING HIS WEIGHT WITH CHILDCARE DUTIES Q: My husband is more than willing to play with the kids. But when it comes to the practical side of parenting— dinner, diapers, bath times—I don’t think he pulls his weight. What’s a woman to do? www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Jim: I’ve heard this complaint from many wives. Men and women often have different understandings about parenting. You may feel it’s natural that tasks be shared equally. But for your husband… well, it might not be so obvious.

with Jim Daly cleaning the house and grocery shopping. The idea isn’t to punish your husband, but to help him understand the realities of the workload around the house. If he’s into sports, you might try using team-based descriptions to illustrate how different players may change assignments based on the game situation and play design. It could be he wasn’t expected to help around the house when he was younger. Or maybe his parents had clearly defined roles that now guide his thinking. Whatever the reason, communication between a husband and wife in these situations is key. So start by sharing your concerns and see if, together, you can agree on ways to split household duties to your mutual satisfaction. If dialogue doesn’t do the trick, counselors often suggest you set appropriate boundaries to motivate his involvement. For example, let him know he’ll likely have to fix his own dinner since you’ll be busy with other things, like feeding and bathing the kids or

WHAT’S THE HARM IN LIVING TOGETHER BEFORE MARRIAGE Q: My boyfriend and I want to get married eventually, but we’ve been told that living together for a few years will help us prepare before making things “official.” What do you think?

Comprehensive Eye Care Stylish Optical Friendly & Comfortable Environment

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Living together almost seems to have become the new engagement. The problem is that research shows the divorce rates for those who live together before marriage are significantly higher than for those who don’t. Cohabitation is a risky venture because there’s no commitment holding the relationship together. It’s essentially two people saying to one another, “I’ll hang out with you as long as you make me happy.” That’s a shaky foundation to build a life on. It infuses doubt and mistrust into the very DNA of your relationship from the get-go. In other words, you’re sabotaging your marriage before you even walk down the aisle. I think a lot of young adults are choosing to live together because they’re afraid to commit. Maybe their parents divorced, or they’ve been swayed by negative messages about marriage in the culture. Whatever the reason, I believe these couples want to get married and stay married.

The biggest problem is most don’t know how to prepare for marriage properly. They don’t realize they can learn how to build a successful relationship. And that’s too bad because premarital counseling can make a lifetime of difference. If you doubt that, consider this: Eighty percent of couples who get quality premarital training stay married. That percentage of success shows that there is a way for couples to make a lasting commitment to one another. We have loads of resources and information available to help your relationship thrive at FocusOnTheFamily.com/marriage. All About Me. All About He. All About She.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Or take a selfie about it. Or… wait, what? A selfie?

Welcome to 2018. And what better way to bring in the New Year than gallivanting through the halls of a shiny new museum? This isn’t just any ol’ museum, mind you. No, no. This soon-to-be Los Angeles attraction will make its debut this month as The Museum of Selfies.

by Kristin Smith, PluggedIn.com

pluggedin.com

That’s right, my friends. It’s a museum dedicated to the quintessential form of self-reflection and slight ego trips of the early 21st century, filled with the very latest of selfie art. And it’ll be structured to encourage each passerby to snap a pic or two of… well, naturally, yourself. Escape room designers Tommy Honton and Tair Mamedov came up with the idea as they pondered the roots of selfie culture, asking why so many people feel the need to capture their own image again. And again. And again.

“The word ‘selfie’ alone bugs me, and I’ve always questioned the emptiness of them, but I wonder if there is a deeper way in,” Honton told the Los Angeles Times. “We can examine everything that had to converge in order for the selfie culture to arise.” But, in truth, Honton says that there’s nothing truly new about the selfie. Sure, the word is new, and the way we capture our own images is rooted in modern technology, but the desire to capture your own image traces back pretty far. You only need to look at Rembrandt’s more than 40 selfportraits to see that. The designer duo hopes to spark conversation and critical examination as people walk through the halls, observing the crazy attempts people have made to capture selfies (along with some of the tragic stories that resulted), as well as eyeing other manifestations of the selfie culture, including the “food selfie” and the almost too private “bathroom selfie.”

Although Honton and Mamedov have received a bit of flak from the more “serious” artists, their hope is that the museum’s patrons will leave feeling happy and like they’re a piece of something bigger; to make art accessible as “a real space where not only could people see the art but be a part of it themselves.” Now, I love a good selfie. I’d like to blame the phenomena on my Millennial generation, but it seems that people of almost all ages are capturing the “best” version of themselves these days. My shopping adventures have been slowed countless times by the couple snapping a shot right in front of me, or the dad to the side of me, or the group of middle school girls all around me (a lesson in patience).

5495 Park Boulevard · Pinellas Park, FL 33781

The selfie clearly appeals to our culture, but why? Is it our vanity? Do we just want to capture the moment? Or is it something else?

It makes me wonder how many pics Rembrandt might’ve snapped if only his iPhone was up-to-date…

A New Year’s Resolution Worth Keeping by Kenny McNatt It’s hard to believe that Christmas, with all of it’s excitement has come and gone. The lights, decorations and Christmas DVDs are “neatly” stored away. Now we look forward to a new year. The dawning of a new year brings with it a hope for change. This hope for change provides the perfect platform for setting new goals. Most resolutions center around our physical health, our financial well-being or our educational goals. While these are all important areas to improve, we must not loose sight of how important it is to have great relationships. It is not that we view relationships as Kenny is a husband, a father, and a follower of Christ. He is a graduate of Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florid. He curently serves as the Lead Pastor at Seminole Assembly of God.

unimportant. It is simply that we often take relational health for granted. Building healthy relationships requires a proactive mindset and a willingness to make necessary changes. In reflecting back over the years that I have spent helping individuals and families, I have arrived at the following conclusion. One of the greatest determiners of healthy relationships is an individuals ability to forgive. Forgiveness is crucial relationship we have.

to

every

As a parent, we model forgiveness tor our children. As a spouse, we practice it with our partner. Yes, there are even those times in which we have to grant it to ourselves. Unfortunately we often lose sight of forgiveness. At times it

this is motherhood

is because our vision is blurred from efforts to prove we are right. Other times it is because we want to hold someone accountable for the wrong they have done us. Most often we do not forgive because we misunderstand what it means to forgive. With that in mind, I would like to share the three stages of forgiveness from a book titled, The Art of Forgiveness by Lewis B. Smedes. I have found that understanding these stages will help to bring clarity when it comes to forgiving those who have hurt you. • Stage One: Rediscover the Humanity of the Person Who Hurt You In rediscovering the humanity of the individual, we no longer look at the person as the wrong they have done to us. We cease looking

at them through lenses smudged by hate. • Stage Two: Surrender Your Right to Get Even In other words, we give up our right to get even. Living life fueled by vengeance will only lead you to deeper depths of anger and bitterness. • Stage Three: Revise Your Feelings Toward the Person You Forgive Once you have rediscovered their humanity (the fact that they are not the wrong they have done) and given up your right to get even, you will find that your feelings toward them will begin to change. As you set your goals for this year, make your relationships a priority by living a life of forgiveness.

Learn how to live before you learn how to make a living

We build circles of women who love each other like family, because raising humans is beautiful and hard, and having each other to lean on is life-giving.
