selling it, it doesn’t have a chance of going bad in my house!

Parent to Parent Do they still put expiration dates on milk jugs? I’m sure they do, but I wouldn’t know, because milk expiration hasn’t mattered to me for at least the past twenty years. That’s because ever since my oldest started drinking regular milk, he and his future siblings have been guzzling it down faster than we could ever hope to keep up. Believe me, if the store is still

I made a rule a long time ago that I would only buy four gallons of milk a week. And when it was gone, the kids would just have to do without for the rest of the week. Why four gallons? Well, we have four kids. So that’s one reason, I guess. It’s also the amount that will fit comfortably in our refrigerator door so we don’t have to clear out space on the shelves. And it’s just so expensive here in Florida! I get jealous of my sister in Michigan who not only has the same gallon of milk in her refrigerator for nearly two weeks, but she also only pays $2.50 for it! But if I personally will only buy four gallons a week, that doesn’t actually mean that my family will only have four gallons of milk a week. My husband happens to be something of a pushover, and my kids know it. So long ago, they stopped asking me to get more milk every 36 to 48 hours and started asking him instead.

Cashier: “Weren’t you just in here yesterday?” Rodney: “Yes, I was actually. Why?” Cashier: “Because you bought four gallons of milk then too.” I guess buying four gallons of milk at a time isn’t exactly normal (even though it feels that way to us). And doing it two days in a row is even less so! She suggested that we will be able to save a lot of money when school starts this month and the kids are out of the house for several hours each day. And she’s right – we should definitely be able to cut back to just 10 to 12 gallons per week. Until next time,

Jennifer

With the kids home all day during summer vacation, it’s been worse than usual. The other day, the cashier at the grocery store even recognized my husband.

DUNGY DIARIES

IF THERE’S ONE THING DADS NEED TO DO MORE, IT’S THIS by Tony Dungy I was recently asked the question, “What is one thing I wished dads would do more of today?” The question immediately made me think of my father and so many of the things he did well. However, there is one thing that stood out more than any other. And it’s something, I have to admit, that I have struggled with as a dad. So if there was one thing I wished dads would do more today, it would definitely be the following.

” Find a Way to Spend More makes a lasting impact.

Quality Time With Your Kids.

When I was growing up, my father was a school teacher. He was around all the time. When we were off for the weekends, he was off. When we were off for the summers, he was off. I was always spending quality time with him, and I thought that was normal. Since it was all I knew, I thought every dad

spent that kind of time with their kids. When I grew up, I realized that wasn’t the case. My time with my dad really benefited me. Playing ball with him, going fishing, or taking walks are times I cherished. It’s the time spent with our children day-to-day that makes a lasting impact.

would have liked. But I tried to do it as best I could. I took my kids to work with me, and when I was off, I focused my time on doing things that they enjoyed doing. In what ways can you spend more time with your kids? It’s difficult, but it is tremendously meaningful and important for our kids.

I Need to Work On It.

As I said, I am just as guilty. Coaching professional football, I didn’t spend nearly as much time with my kids as I

5 Ways to Be a Better Dad Five men I know named Bob, Cedric, Andre, Steve, and Quentin have very different lives, but they have one thing in common. They know what it means to be a good dad. However, their approaches and best practices are different. When I asked each of them to tell me what they thought made them good fathers they discussed what they thought was the most important. Each of them listed something different. Five guys, five solid ideas. We all have to find our own way, yes, but take a moment to think through the following pointers from Bob, Cedric, Steve, Andre, and Quentin. See what those five things are. Here are 5 ways to be a better dad. 1. Spend one-on-one time. Bob has four children. They range in age from 7 to 16. “There are a lot of key factors in parenting,” Bob said. “But I’ve got to say, hands down, the most important tool in my belt is quality oneon-one time. It’s not easy, logistically, but I’ve made the commitment to do it

and I think it pays off.” Bob’s “signature move” is breakfast. Each child has their own day and they’re all well known at his favorite local venue. Be like Bob and literally “be there” for your kids on a regular basis. “I found something that worked for us,” Bob said. “But the point is the individual time together. We have some really deep conversations and there’s no competition for my attention because they all know their morning is coming soon.” 2. Share a passion Cedric’s “thing” is Boy Scouts with his twin sons. He’s moved through the ranks with them and right now they’re finishing up Life. “Someone needs to find a way to get me an Eagle too,” he laughed. “If anyone’s earned it by now it’s me!” Cedric and his boys can’t get enough of camping, learning badge skills, and hanging out with the other Scouts. Maybe you’ll end up jogging with your kids, learning to cook to-

gether, or volunteering every week. Whatever it is, your relationship will be strengthened. 3. Love their mother “If I’ve got one plus going for me as a dad, it’s being the best husband I can be,” Steve said. His kids feel secure because their parents are secure. “They see the respect we have for each other,” Steve said, “and it rubs off. I’m not kidding when I say the best parenting advice I can give other dads is to be an awesome husband.” 4. Be consistent Andre points to consistency as his “acein-the-hole.” “The kids always know where they stand with me,” Andre said. “It doesn’t sound like much, but I’ve

found that my consistency is a rare gift for the family. The kids know where they stand, with no doubts. That’s a strong parenting attribute.” 5. Volunteer at their school Quentin swears his go-to, can’t miss parenting plus has to be, “my high-profile role as a volunteer at their school.” You might not be able to be there two days a week like Quentin, but showing up at school means you care, you know what’s going on, and you are genuinely interested in your kids’ lives. “Plus there’s this consistency between home and school,” Quentin said. “There’s a lot to be said for being on the same page as the teachers too.” A great way to get involved at your child’s school is to do what matters this year and attend, or start, an All Pro Dad’s Day at your kid’s school. As a working mom and the parent of four children I understand how tough it can be to put together school lunches that are nutritious and that your children will eat. Packing healthy lunches that your children will enjoy day in and day out certainly isn’t an easy task; however here are a few simple tips that will help you as you pack and plan your child’s school lunches this year. • Involve the Children – The more you involve your children in the food shopping and preparation of their lunch, the more likely they are to eat it.

• Be Creative – Any sandwich cut with a large cookie cutter, like a star or heart shape will be more interesting for your children. • Freeze the Drinks – Freeze a juice pouch or box and then put it in your child’s lunch in the morning. It will help keep the drink cool and it will be thawed by lunch time. • Change the Bread – Bagels, tortillas, pita pockets, muffins, rolls and croissants all make for a nice change from the typical PB&J. • Make Minis – Kids love things that come in small packages, so try making bite-sized mini versions of regular foods like sandwiches and muffins. You may be surprised how quickly your children eat them up. • Fruit and Cheese Cubes – Cheese cubes, grapes, sliced apples and mixed fruit are all ideal for a nice school snack.

Proposals for Settlement – When the Loser Pays for the Winner’s Attorney’s Fees

Retaining an attorney for a divorce, a criminal law matter, or a business contract can prove extremely expensive in terms of the amount of attorney’s fees needed. Further, in many cases, the client owes these fees regardless of whether you win or lose. However, there are some areas of the law where the expense of hiring an attorney isn’t prohibitive. For example, personal injury attorney’s often take cases on contingency, which simply means that the attorney takes a percentage of whatever is recovered, but the attorney is owed nothing if nothing is recovered. Florida has another interesting component to attorney’s fees in certain situations: the proposal for settlement. Essentially, a proposal for settlement is a way for the winner of a lawsuit to get the loser to pay for the winner’s attorney’s fees. For example, an injured party in a lawsuit can make an official offer (a proposal for settlement) and file that offer with the court. The other party (defendant) then has 30 days to accept that offer to settle. If the other party (defendant) does not accept the offer to settle, and if the case then goes to a jury trial and the jury awards the person who proposed the settlement more than 125% of the amount that the injured person was willing to settle for, the court

12 • August 2019

can then shift the attorney’s fees and make the defendant pay the attorney’s fees and costs for both parties. Of course, this also works for defendants. A defendant can propose a settlement to a plaintiff, and if the plaintiff does not accept it within 30 days and the jury awards 75% or less than the settlement amount proposed by the defendant, the plaintiff may have to pay for the attorney’s fees and costs for the defendant.

Chris Reynolds As a hypothetical example, consider a plaintiff who submits a proposal for settlement for $100,000.00, and a defendant files a proposal for settlement for $50,000.00. This usually happens months before the actual trial, and in this hypothetical, the plaintiff is willing to settle the case for $100,000 and the defendant is willing to settle for $50,000. Assume that neither party accepted the proposal for settlement and the case went to a jury trial. If the jury awards more than $125,000.00 (125% more than the $100,000 proposed by the plaintiff), then the defendant may have to pay for the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees. On the other hand, if the jury awards less than $37,500.00 (less than 75% of

It is important to note that the attorney’s fees and costs for either the plaintiff or defense attorney could be many tens of thousands of dollars, so this proposal for settlement statute is extremely significant.

Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper

the amount proposed by the defendant), then the plaintiff may have to pay the attorney’s fees for the defendant. If a plaintiff loses, the plaintiff might end up owing money. In the above example, if the jury awarded $10,000, and the defense attorney fees and costs were $40,000, then the plaintiff would owe the defense attorney $30,000. On the other hand, if the jury awarded $160,000, and the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees and costs were $40,000, then the total verdict would increase by $40,000 to $200,000. As you can see, the amount to propose as a settlement can become very strategic because it creates the risk of having to pay for the other party’s attorney’s fees, which can be tens of thousands of dollars or more. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of the negligence of another, please contact an experienced trial attorney.

Mr. Reynolds hails from St. Petersburg, graduated from Northside Christian High School, Eckerd College, and Stetson University College of Law. He lives in Pinellas with his wife and three boys, all of whom attend Keswick Christian School. Mr. Reynolds also has parents living in Pinellas County and a sister who recently returned from overseas as a Christian missionary.

Backpack Safety

Preparing your child to head back to school is not simple. There are clothes to buy, supplies to stock and, of course, the annual health assessment that most schools require. This annual exam is important as it may be the only time your school-aged child will see a health care provider in the entire year. It is the time to look in the ears and check the heart, as well as an opportunity to assess your child’s immunization status (and get that flu vaccine), examine the spine for scoliosis, assess any behavioral problems, or check for the many issues that a child-maturing body and mind can experience. This exam is especially important for homeschooled students who may not be required to have a health assessment.

Most children use backpacks nowadays. Not only ensuring the proper size and fit, but also teaching your child the correct way to wear a backpack will prevent many back and shoulder strains. For example, if your child uses a lightweight, canvas backpack, he should never carry more than 20% of his body weight – and should always use two wide, padded shoulder straps and a waist belt to help distribute the weight more evenly across the body.

health officials of the condition, even if the illness is well controlled. Provide a list of any medications your child takes, even if they are taken only at home. Notify the school of any allergies or physical restrictions. Equally important is to understand what health services are available in the school. Is there a nurse or an advanced practice nurse at the school? What type of equipment is available to assess your child’s condition if he becomes ill? What tasks is the nurse or other staff allowed to perform, e.g. take vital signs or administer medications? Are you allowed to keep medication for your child in the health office? Knowing the roles and abilities of your child’s school health office will help you plan ahead if your child needs medical attention.

Chronic Conditions If your child has a chronic condition, such as asthma or diabetes, it is important to inform the teachers and school

It is not uncommon for ‘little’ epidemics of minor illness to sweep through schools. These may include conjunctivitis (pink eye), strep throat, stomach viruses, etc. While some of this is inevitable, the occurrences can be lessened in two ways. The first: if your child is obviously ill, do not send him to school as you will only help spread his illness to the other students. The second: it is the school’s responsibility to send home any sick child in order to limit the spread of the illness.

Back to School Health Tips

When the kids are in school, health should be one of your top priorities. Of course, learning is important, but lots of children in one place mean lots of germs. Following these tips will help your kids stay healthy and will make school health a top priority for your family.

Finally, get your child into a healthy routine of exercise and sleep. If the physical exercise at school is limited, your child will need play/exercise time after school. Sleep is vitally important; most children need 8 to 10 hours of sleep to function optimally. If they don’t get the required amount, they simply will not be alert in class, have difficulty paying attention, and perhaps experience more behavioral problems.

Dr. Charles A. Welborn is a board certified pediatrician at After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care (www.afterhourspediatrics.com).

Teach Your Kids to Wash Their Hands Washing hands is the best way to stay healthy both in school and out. Stock up on Tissues Be prepared for all those sniffles and sneezes that are bound to come while your kids are in school. Update Their Vaccines Vaccines help protect not only your child but also the other kids around them from lots of really serious illnesses. Get Your Hand Sanitizer Ready When their hands aren’t visibly soiled and soap and water just isn’t available, instant hand sanitizer works great. Pack Healthy Lunches Teaching healthy habits at home and making sure you either pack healthy lunches or teach your kids which foods to buy in the cafeteria, will go a long way to improving your child’s health at school. Encourage Physical Activity Research has shown that physical activity is just as important to your child’s health and development as mental activity. Keep Them Home When They Are Sick Keeping your child home will help him recover faster and will also prevent the illness from spreading to the rest of his classmates.

Back-to-School: Top Car Buying Tips for Young Drivers During back-to-school season, students are often on the hunt for what may be their first car. There are many factors to consider beyond budget, and experts say this can be a difficult process to navigate. “With hundreds of makes and models to choose from, young car buyers can find it challenging to select the best match for their new lifestyles,” says Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader. There may likely be conflicting priorities between the student who will be driving the car and the parents who may be funding the purchase. To help families select cars for young drivers, as well as prepare them for safe travels, the experts at Autotrader are sharing tips and insights. • Consider new vs. used vs. hand-me-down: New cars don’t typically require much maintenance, which can make them good choices for young people, who should

To help you further navigate the car-buying landscape, visit autotrader. com/collegecars.

be focused foremost on their driving. Plus, new cars have all the latest safety features. However, new cars can mean depreciation, as they lose value at a much faster rate than used cars. While a used car will likely be cheaper, it may come with more maintenance costs. Lastly, parents may consider simply giving their current vehicle to their child, assuming the car is in good driving condition. • Prioritize Safety: The latest safety features are particularly important for those with less experience behind the wheel. Before selecting a vehicle, consider reviewing crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at safercar.gov. • Rethink Value: Value doesn’t necessarily mean buying the least expensive car. Remember to take into consideration fuel economy, resale value and practicality. Is this a vehicle that will spend more time in the shop than on the road? Also consider which services will come with

the purchase. Some new cars, for example, come with free scheduled maintenance for a specific number of miles. You can also narrow down your options based on which cars are most affordable to insure. • Technology: Young drivers today are likely going to be keen on selections with in-car technology. Voice-activated Bluetooth, hands-free calling and music streaming are just a few features that may appeal to your young driver.

Whatever way you acquire your vehicle, it’s important to remember that regular maintenance will extend the life of your car. Frequently wash your car to keep the paint and finish in good condition. Check tire pressure, inspect wiper blades, the engine, belts, hoses and coolant, and check alignment and suspension. While knowing how to perform these routine tasks is an invaluable skill, you may prefer taking your car to a professional. Find a trusted mechanic near your home or campus. That way, you’ll know who to call should you have an issue down the line. Use this back-to-school season as an opportunity to become a savvier car shopper, a safer driver and a more responsible car owner. © StatePoint.

Five Pilot Whales Rescued Off Gulf Coast Beach

Three Pilot Whales Released Back Into the Gulf, Two Taken to New Rehab Facility in Tarpon Springs

reports of the stranded pilot whales in Redington Beach around 6:30 a.m.

On July 29, 2019, five pilot whales stranded in the shallow water off Redington Beach, on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Rescue Team responded along with wildlife agencies and local authorities, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and other partner organizations. After careful assessment from veterinarians and marine biologists on scene, it

Clearwater Marine Aquarium CEO David Yates said the pilot whales seemed to be healthy, but they don’t yet know why they beached themselves.

was determined that three of the pilot whales were healthy enough to be released back into the Gulf of Mexico. The other two pilot whales required more attention and were taken to Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s new rehabilitation facility located in Tarpon Springs. (The rehab facility is not open to the public.) Rescuers from Clearwater Marine Aquarium, FWC and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded early Monday morning after receiving

“Our goal is to get them offshore as soon as we can,” Yates said. These short-finned pilot whales are deep-water marine animals, who mostly feed on squid at depths of 1,000 feet or more, and are not commonly found close to shore. It was not immediately clear what caused the

small group of pilot whales to beach themselves, but due to their social nature it is possible that if even one animal is ill, the other companions may follow it to shore. Pilot whales are a species of cetaceans related to dolphins, which live in stable groups of 15 to 30 animals but can gather in social groups of hundreds. They may be dispersed over an area a half-mile wide while swimming together in search for food. Laura Engleby of NOAA said when offshore species like pilot whales get into shallow water, they tend to get disoriented.

“It’s hard for them to find their way out,” Engleby said of the distressed whales. The rescue was a strong display of team effort from multiple agencies with support from the local community, volunteers, and beachgoers who were nearby and willing to help provide supplies and assistance when needed. Beach tents and cold towels were offered and utilized to help shelter the marine animals, and rescuers, from the rising summer sun. Cetaceans have extremely sensitive skin and would be otherwise vulnerable to severe sunburn while stranded in the shallow water.

Jessica Powell, a marine mammal biologist with NOAA, said that it’s hard to pinpoint what may have caused the five pilot whales to come to shore.

would require more care and would be transported by land to Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s newly completed rehab facility at Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Two pilot whales recovering at CMA’s rehab facility in Tarpon Springs. The other three pilot whales were deemed healthy enough to be immediately returned to deeper water in the Gulf of Mexico. They were transferred to three vessels in the water and transported miles off shore where they would be at least 30 to 40 feet deep and able to safely swim

“This amazing community has been coming together bringing towels and water and food and being so supportive of everyone here,” said Engleby.

away. They were tagged with satellite transmitters to track their progress and ensure they do not attempt to strand near shore again. The latest tracking data showed the three pilot whales heading southwest away from the coast. It is hoped that if the two rehabilitating pilot whales make a quick recovery, they will be able to be released and head out in a similar direction to deeper water like the others. After several hours stabilizing the distressed animals, and a thorough assessment from veterinarians, NOAA determined that two of the pilot whales

“The other two whales have been transported to Clearwater Marine Aquarium rehab facility for a few days, where they will receive additional medical treatment,” Powell said. “Hopefully, this will just be a few days of holding for them and they can be transported back out like the previous three.”

The two remaining pilot whales will be temporarily held and continue to receive care at CMA’s private rehab facility in Tarpon Springs until they can be released.

Motherhood:

The good thing about this hyper-connected world we live in is that we have access to lots of information. For instance, we moms have access to an endless supply of advice about feeding our families right, helping our kids to succeed in a million endeavors, and making holidays and other occasions extra-special. The problem is that it is overwhelming. We begin to believe that we’re supposed to be good at all of these things, all of the time, and that anything less is bad parenting. But the truth is that we all have different gifts and strengths, and that’s okay! To help take the monkey off your back, we’ve broken mom-world down into the more and less important areas of focus. We hope it will help you be free!

What to Sweat What to Forget

What to Sweat: Teaching Core Values and Good Character. Whether it’s tracking chores to teach the value of hard work or taking the kids to church to help them understand their relationship to God, core values are worth the effort. Academic Success. Making sure that your children are on-track academically and learning how to seek extra resources when necessary is vitally important to their future. But remember, learning all the spelling words for the test and making the “world’s biggest baking soda volcano” for the science fair are two different things. The spelling words are non-negotiable. The volcano, you could probably dial down a notch or two.

Fitness and Nutrition. These are two areas that deserve your attention and consistency where the kids are concerned. But even knowing that, don’t be too hard on yourself if junk food levels rise on vacation, or you have a couch potato week during bad weather. Think big picture and your kids will benefit in the long run. Personal Responsibility. Remember, the idea is for them to be able to take care of themselves one day. Go to the trouble to train them to do more for themselves as they grow and one day you’ll thank yourself.

What to Forget: Appearances. Yes, you want your child to learn to be groomed and neat, but don’t forget that they are children. Some moms are burning up too much energy (and money) trying to make their children appear as if they just walked out of a catalog shoot for a kids’ boutique. Chill out. Let them get dirty occasionally or wear a play outfit that you don’t worry about stains on. Ditto for the decor in your kids’ bedrooms and/or playroom. The whole world doesn’t have to look like the Pottery Barn Kids catalog to be great. Hyped-Up Holidays. In the world where I grew up, Christmas was a biggie but all other holidays would likely garner little more than a themed coloring sheet at school. Now we’re making elaborate

costumes for trick-or-treating, spending a full month moving a mythical elf around the house before Christmas, and baking intricate cookies shaped like a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day. Our point? Buying the box of pre-made valentines from the drug store instead of making the crafty ones from Pinterest does not make you a bad mom. It makes you a mom who knows her limits. (Exception: if you are a mom who derives deep personal pleasure from creating crafty and culinary treats, press on with our blessings. Just make some extra for our kids.) School Project Overkill. Grammar school teachers could write volumes about simple project assignments (meant to be completed by, ahem, children) that turned into elaborate “mompetitions.” Book report costumes that were Broadway stage-worthy. Science projects that would intimidate NASA engineers. Posters that belong in The Louvre. Chill out, Mom. Your kids will learn just as much (and probably more) from the process if they do it themselves…no matter how messed-up it looks to you. If after reading this, you’re still sweating it when it comes to the duties of mommyhood, keep calm and visit our website at www.iMOM.com and read a few mom confessions from tried and some of our true mothers on staff.

Back in grade school, the ride home at the end of the day would always be the same. As soon as I was buckled in, I launched into a detailed rehashing of the school day’s events. I would spend the whole ride home talking about my day, while my older brother would sit in silence, content to just listen.

Some kids are talkers, and some kids are listeners. The key is to know what kinds of questions give the quieter child a chance to speak up. As you enter this busy season of more limited family time, it’s even more important to make every conversation count. Not sure how to start? This Back to School Talk provides conversation starters that helps big talkers and great listeners each share and contribute.

Remembering Art O’Hara It is with deep sadness that the R’Club and Louise Graham Regeneration Center Board Of Directors and staff announce the passing of our cherished Executive Director, Art O’Hara. This was completely unexpected and is truly heartbreaking for all that knew and loved Art. Please know that the leadership and staff are doing just what he would have wanted – focusing on the children and families in the community that we serve. Mayor Rick Kriseman said: “Art O’Hara used his time on Earth wisely. He made a difference, made our community better. The future of St. Pete is brighter because of Art and his focus on our children.” Art O’Hara, a man of many talents, can never be replaced – we know that. However, what we will endeavor to do each and every day is to make sure that his legacy and vision of caring for the most vulnerable – our R’Club children and Louise Graham attendees will always remain at the forefront of every decision we make. IT’S A CRAZY TIME OF YEAR:

Working together as a couple to conquer back-to-school stress by Dr. Greg Smalley, Focus on the Family

Another challenge for couples is deciding how to divide responsibilities. Although one spouse may not have time to participate in all the back-to-school activities, it doesn’t mean that he or she cannot be a part of this changing season in family life. If all the preparation falls solely on one spouse’s shoulders, the other spouse can offer support in other practical ways.

You could hear crickets chirping. The awkwardness finally ended as Erin gave me that half-smile that meant I was in big trouble.

It’s best to discuss these responsibilities as teammates. Make a list of all the tasks needed to get your kids back in school. Then discuss how to divide them. If some of the chores start to create a tug-of-war, make it your goal to out-serve your spouse. I made the decision to get up an hour earlier so I can unload the dishwasher and cook breakfast for the kids. I may hate unloading the dishes, but I know that Erin likes to leave the house with a clean sink and an empty dishwasher. This is one way I can serve my wife.

The stress and anxiety of preparing kids to o back to school can create unique challenges for couples. Increased conflict is common during this time of transition. The best way to deescalate some of this tension is to recognize what is going on for you emotionally. Talk to your spouse and try putting into words how you’re feeling – “I’m overwhelmed trying to gather all of the back-to-school supplies,” or “I’m worried that our daughter won’t make any friends at her new school.” When you express how you’re feeling, it can calm you down.

Starting the new school year can be a time of great excitement… and anxiety. Help calm your child’s fears (and your own) with these tips from some amazing educators, doctors, and other parents!

It’s possible for your marriage to thrive during the back-to-school season when you take time to care for each other and pursue unity.

Getting In Gear: A Back to School Guide for Parents

By Judy Adorno, Director, St. Petersburg Sylvan Learning Center

help ensure that he is not overtired or overly anxious about schoolwork. If you’re feeling apprehensive about the upcoming start of school — frazzled mornings, preparing lunches, negotiating school attire and regulating “screen” time — take solace in the fact that you play a critical part in getting your children motivated and excited to tackle the new school year.

Develop A Family Event Calendar. One of the most helpful tools for getting organized is a family calendar. Keep track of school schedules and events, volunteer work, after-school activities as well as designated study and family time. Effective time management is the key to avoiding stress and disorganization.

Depending on your child’s age, your role will vary but here are some helpful ideas to ease kids of all ages back into learning mode:

• Depending on your children’s ages, your calendar can be on construction paper with large squares to write in all necessary information, or it can be produced on a white board so that it is easy to revise.

Help Your Child Discover His/Her Learning Style. Because each child is special, with different learning styles and academic needs, it is important to personalize the learning process. People learn in at least eight different ways, according to the Multiple Intelligences Theory: visually, verbally, physically, mathematically, musically, naturalistically, through group activity or through quiet thinking time. Think about how your child learns best and talk about her learning strengths and needs. Check in with her teachers early in the year and discuss how, together, you can provide the best support.

take advantage of the tax-free time frame. Be sure to include your child. She can feel excited and in control by choosing her favorite colors and designs. Be a Cheerleader. Encourage your child to share any concerns he has about returning to school. Reinforce positive feelings by talking with your child about learning and achievement. Support his academic interests and encourage him to get involved in extracurricular activities at school. Set goals together and have frequent progress checks and rewards. Notice and celebrate successes (big or small) once school starts. Plan now to celebrate the first report card!

• If it is color-coded by family member, you can clearly see who has an activity scheduled and when the event occurs. • Place the calendar in a central location so, whenever questions arise or plans change, you will know instantly whether it fits within your family plans. Purchase School Supplies In Advance. Avoid the last-minute rush by purchasing supplies in advance  —  and don’t forget to

Get Back In The Routine. Ease the transition from lazy summer days to the structure of the school year by re-establishing routines for reading and homework, bedtime and mealtime. Talk with your child about the importance of structure and how routines

Read to Achieve… By Dr. Kira Wilson, Director, Covenant Academy

The positive relationship between reading and academic achievement is well established. Reading helps children construct a framework of knowledge for understanding the world around them. Children who read, and are read to, develop a larger vocabulary than non-readers. Vocabulary increases a child’s background knowledge, helping him or her to grasp new concepts and information when it is introduced in the classroom or in life. In addition, reading aloud to

children increases reading fluency and listening skills. But how do we motivate children to read? Recently, I completed research that reported parents who model the practice and enjoyment of reading motivate their children to do the same. A parent’s love of reading is contagious and signals to a child that reading is valued by the most influential person in his or her life. Reading aloud is crucial. After teaching in a Christian school for many years, I began a rewarding homeschool journey. During those years, I read historical fiction or biographies to my children every morning until they started college (at age 15). We visited the library weekly and checked out piles of books. We read books in the car, waiting for appointments, and on vacation. On a trip out west when our children were 10 and 12, I read Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry, in the car. We stopped to read in an open meadow near Yosemite. Our daughter found a broken branch and began to whittle off the bark as I read. With every stop that branch was closer to becoming the walking stick she envisioned for her hike in the Grand Canyon. My daughter, now in medical school, still has the walking stick propped up against the wall in her bedroom-an artifact and reminder of a treasured family experience and her love for good books.

Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper

The beginning of the school year gives parents the opportunity to make changes and start fresh. Why not make some changes in your family’s reading habits? Establish a family reading time when everyone grabs his or her own book or magazine to read - or read a book together. Keep in mind that if this is new for your family or your children are hooked on electronics, there may be some resistance at first. Children who have not developed a love for story or listening skills may benefit from an audio book on a long car ride before introducing a time on the couch together. Find time to read. Read to your children and let them see you reading. I promise it will be rewarding. Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County. With more than 30 years in Christian education her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a love for God. She cherishes family time with her husband of 38 years, three children, and two grandchildren. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

Living Hope Church NEED HOPE?

Christianity is Impossible! Jesus said in John 15:5b, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” Jesus’ message about bearing fruit through abiding in Him was none short of saying, “Christianity, and its service and good works, are impossible without Me; and my provisions of the Word and the Spirit!” (Matt.19:26) This is because, it’s supernatural, not natural. In Phil. 2:13, Paul wrote, “For it is God Who works in you, both to will and to act according to His good pleasure.” Remember, Christianity is an exchanged life and a derived life, not necessarily a changed life; nor is it a contrived life! Meaning, I keep receiving the same way I was saved: I keep receiving after salvation, the same way I received Christ as my Savior. How? By Grace through Faith! Col. 2:6 says, “Just as you have received Him, so ye walk in Him.” and “You died, and your (new, real)* life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Col.3:3) * Amplified Bible notes

JOIN US SUNDAYS at

How do we derive and exchange our life for His life? By continually receiving by faith, the filling of the Spirit (Eph. 5:18) and “Letting the words of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Col. 3:16) Acts 1:8 gives the order: You shall be My witnesses (Jesus said) after you receive power when My Holy Spirit comes upon you. “We serve in the newness of the Spirit, not in the oldness of the letter.” (Rom. 7:6) The disciples exclaimed upon hearing Jesus words about the difficulty of man’s salvation, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Jesus was emphatically stating that the Christian life can only be acquired and lived out not by natural means, but by supernatural means only that we already mentioned above. “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves; for our sufficiency is from God.” (2 Cor. 3:6)

If you want to be loved, accepted, and nourished into the design God has planned for you, then this is a church for you. We hope you will visit us this week!

Remember this important principle: “God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” Meaning, He equips us as His children to do His will, and to perform what is pleasing in His sight. (Hebrews 13:21)

In this way, God will be glorified to the maximum. Why? Because He delights in using a humble servant of God who simply offers and yields himself to Him by faith; and who knows that the power to be a fruitful Christian lies in the Hands of a Faithful God; Who performs the impossible in and through me! Together with you in Christ,

The Young and the Young at Heart by Joy Lancaster

Back to school. It is always a special time. As a former kindergarten teacher, it is very important to me that all children (but especially those related to me!) are successful in school. We have 4 grandchildren starting back to school this year – from 1st to 8th grade. Since I believe in the principle that “In the multitude of counselors there is wisdom,” I asked several of my colleague friends for their opinions about fostering success. “What do you believe,” I asked, “are the best things parents and grandparents can do to guarantee success in the classroom?” Here are some of their ideas:

Academic Preparation • Start reading to your children in their infancy. Acquaint them with written words, and associate the words with pictures. • Talk to your child – a lot! For instance, “I am buying crackers; let’s put them

in the cart and be careful that we don’t squash them.” • Have your children take part in play days with other children. • Take them places such as the park and story hour at the library. • Teach them number concepts. For example, “Which one is the largest, smallest, etc.” or “Count how many Cheerios you have.” Have them put items in patterns, such as in the making of a fruit loop necklace: pink, green, yellow…pink, green, yellow.

Emotional Preparation • As the child nears school age, let him visit various classrooms. • Get them active in church activities where they are in a classroom setting for a short period of time.

• As the big day approaches, be sure to attend any pre-school startup activities. Perhaps your school hosts a family picnic to help children get acquainted or a “meet the teacher” activity of some kind. • Mom (and even Dad) – be sure to try to hold back those tears as your child comes to his classroom!

For Continued Success • Be sure your child starts out each school day with a nutritious breakfast. Keep the conversation lighthearted, and send your child to school with encouraging words ringing in his ears. • Be involved in your child’s classroom—not annoying, but involved! Ask your child’s teacher how you can best help.

Grandparent Tip

Though many of these comments are meant more for parents, we grandparents can do our part too. When I was teaching, some of my favorite classroom helpers were grandparents! Think of ways you can become involved in the success of your grandchild’s education. Be a constant source of encouragement to your grandchildren throughout all their school years. Remember: they do pass quickly and, before you know it, you will be attending their high school graduations!

TO KNOW HIM AND LIVE THAT OTHERS MAY KNOW HIM You will be encouraged, challenged and have opportunity to grow in your personal relationship with Jesus Christ!

MOM CONCERNED THAT SON WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL

Q: Our 14-year-old son wants to start playing football. My husband is all-in, but I’m reluctant due to the injury risk. Do you have any advice?

Jim: I think a common misperception is that “manliness” equates to brute power and strength. But when it comes to being a good father and husband, I’d suggest something else. How about “sacrifice”?

Jim: I personally love football, but I also know firsthand how rough it can be — my playing days ended with a broken collarbone in high school. Football is a great sport that teaches kids many good qualities, including teamwork, and helps them get in shape. But parents and children need to be aware of the risks associated with such a rough contact sport. According to the journal Pediatrics, football accounts for about 22 percent of all concussions among 8- to 19-yearolds. In fact, the study’s researchers found that 27 percent of football players ages 12 through 17 have had a least one concussion. Other research has identified a serious condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (C.T.E.), which can develop after repeated concussions and trauma. On a broader scale that encompasses all sports, studies by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons show that young people are facing more serious injuries than ever before — torn ligaments, dislocated shoulders, neck and knee injuries and strained muscles and joints — all from high school athletics. I’m certainly not slamming youth sports. But as parents, we may need to help our kids find a balance between athletics and other less physically demanding activities. If your children are involved in high-impact sports yearround, you might encourage them to take a season off to pursue other interests and allow their bodies to heal. Even

though they’re young and energetic, teens need time to rest and recuperate, just like the rest of us. If and when our kids get hurt, we shouldn’t push them back out on the field too soon. Playing when you’re injured isn’t tough — it’s negligent. Along those lines, make sure that coaches and trainers are properly qualified to assess injuries (especially concussions), and are fully committed to placing player safety above any other outcome. If the coach’s perspective is “win at all costs,” your child will be better off playing elsewhere or trying a different activity.

“Sacrifice” is considered a weakness by a lot of guys. That’s too bad, because when you look at healthy families you generally see a common trait: sacrificial men. These are the guys who go to their kids’ soccer games even if they’d rather stay home and watch football. They’re patient with their kids when a bike gets left in the rain for the umpteenth time. Men who sacrifice develop stronger, more loving family relationships. It’s a paradox, really. We’re at our strongest when we lay down our lives, even in small ways, for our wives and children. It can be hard to do, and we don’t always do it well. But that’s why it’s called “sacrifice.” As fathers, we have to challenge ourselves to sacrifice for our families. We should not only tell them we love them,

“MANLINESS” MEANS MAKING SACRIFICES FOR YOUR FAMILY Q: I’m a newlywed soon-to-be dad. I never knew my own father, so when I think about teaching my son to be “manly,” I’m intimidated. What does “manliness” really look like?

but show them that they’re the most important people in the world to us. It could be leaving work early for a special dinner with our wives. Or maybe it’s staying patient and lovingly correcting your children when they’re careless and scratch your car. Sacrifice will lead you to make significant choices. But being a dad is a significant experience. For help with your fathering, visit FocusOnTheFamily.com.

RAISING TWINS CAN BE A REAL ADVENTURE Q: Is there anything special we need to know about raising twins? We just became the proud parents of two precious children, and we’d like to get our family off to a good start. Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Apart from the fact that it’s twice the work (and twice the fun!), raising twins doesn’t differ significantly from the rearing of other children. Generally speaking, it’s based on the same foundational principles of love, limits and close parental involvement. However, there are some special considerations to keep in mind, particularly if you’ve been blessed with identical twins (my father-in-law is an identical twin).

can also tend to obscure the individual identities of the children involved. There’s nothing wrong with highlighting the similarities between your twins — for example, by dressing them in identical clothes when they’re small. But you should also be looking for ways to appreciate and emphasize their differences. Make a point of allowing both kids to be themselves. As much as possible, love and discipline each one individually, according to his or her own temperament and personality. Dozens of detailed studies, involving over 14,000 pairs of twins, have emphasized that each child is unique and needs a different parenting response. As your kids grow older, check in with them from time to time to see how they’re doing. Ask questions like, “How does it feel to be a twin in this family? What can we do to strengthen our relationship?” In short, do everything you can to ensure that the uniqueness of each child isn’t overlooked.

In the meantime, don’t neglect your own needs as parents and as a couple. Invest time and effort in building and maintaining a strong support system. Don’t be afraid to request help from parents, relatives and friends. Plan regular date nights, and work to keep your marriage healthy and strong. Raising twins is a big job, and it can be exhausting at times — but completely worth it!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN YOUR COMMUNITY Q: How can I get involved with the effort to protect and rescue the innocent victims of exploitation? Recently I heard about human trafficking and sexual slavery right here in our own community! Jim: It’s true that human trafficking, sexual slavery and various types of bondage are going on all around us. Most of us go about our business blissfully ignorant of the suffering and tragedy that could be taking place under our very noses. If you see someone you suspect might be a victim of trafficking, watch for evidence that he or she is being controlled. Signs include inability to move or leave a job, fear or depression, lack of identification or marks of physical abuse. If you have an opportunity to speak with such an

with Jim Daly individual in a non-threatening situation, ask questions like, “Do you want to be doing this work?” “Are you being paid?” “Can you leave if you choose to do so?” and “Where do you live and what are your working conditions like?” Should you come across evidence of trafficking in your neighborhood, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888. On the home front, the best way to fight trafficking is to build strong relationships with your own children. Home should be the place where they get their strokes and their positive self-image. You can protect them against negative outside influences by forging a bond of mutual trust. Acknowledge that there are dangerous people in society, then make it clear to your kids that they can always come to you with their needs, problems and concerns. Children who get that kind of affirmation at home generally don’t go looking for it somewhere else. If you’d like to discuss this issue at greater length, feel free to call Focus on the Family’s counseling department at 1-800-232-6459.

SINGLE ADULT CONSIDERS WHETHER TO ADOPT AN ORPHAN Q: I’m a single adult who is deeply concerned about the plight of orphans in this country and around the world, and I’d like to do my part by adopting a child who needs a home. What is your advice? Jim: I applaud your selfless attitude and your willingness to welcome a needy child into your home; the need for more adoptive parents is huge. That said, Focus on the Family remains committed to the ideal that the two-parent home — founded on a loving marriage relationship between one man and one woman — is the optimum environment for every child. This is our Creator’s design for the family, and we’re convinced that it’s the best arrangement for all concerned. Studies overwhelmingly demonstrate that children do best in all measurable ways when they’re in stable homes with a mother and a father. That’s why — and as most single moms and dads would be the first to confirm — single-parenting is a stiff challenge even under the most favorable circumstances. So I would counsel anyone who is considering this option to proceed with great care. Furthermore, moms and dads are innately different. Academic research has demonstrated the importance of a father’s protective influence, especially for boys. Mothers

provide nurturing and emotional comfort that brings security. Both gender roles are of immeasurable significance, and an individual must consider how to address these concerns in a creative and intentional way as he or she evaluates whether to become a single parent. It’s also important to make a careful assessment of your resources. Are you financially capable of providing for a child’s material needs? Will you have the support of friends and extended family? Have you thought about education, values training and child care? Are your current living quarters large enough to accommodate another person? Our staff counselors would be happy to talk with you about these issues and any other concerns you may have. Please call them at 1-800-232-6459. I wish you the best.

Disney+ Is Coming. Here’s What You Need to Know.

pluggedin.com

by Jackson Greer, pluggedin.com It’s been two years since Disney announced its plans to wade into the increasingly crowded streamingcontent marketplace, where it will join the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, as well as single-network offerings such as CBS All Access, HBO Now, Stars and Showtime. And with the recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox and Hulu, Disney has solidified its case to become the premier streaming service in your living room and on your mobile devices. Despite projections that the Mouse House’s new streaming platform will fail to generate a profit

until 2024, competitors Netflix and Amazon Prime are bracing for impact as we inch closer to the new service’s November 12 launch date. While Netflix is projected to spend $15 billion on new content in 2019, Disney will launch its new service with programming drawn from a war chest of assets and franchises that now includes its own classic brand, Lucasfilm, Marvel Entertainment,

a platform where The Lion King is featured adjacently to a gory Stephen King adaptation such as Castle Rock. A few inadvertent clicks from an innocent toddler, and all of sudden a nighttime viewing of Dumbo turns into explicit exposure courtesy Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale or Harlots.

Pixar, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox, ESPN, ABC and Hulu. At just $6.99 a month, Disney+ will be the most cost-effective streaming service available. So let’s dive into how Disney+’s imminent arrival might affect families that subscribe come November.

Price and Image Starting at $6.99 a month ($69.99/ year), Disney+ is half the cost of Netflix’s most popular plan, which starts at $12.99. Compared to Amazon Prime at $12.99 a month, HBO Now at $14.99 a month and YouTube TV at a staggering $49.99 a month, paying for Disney+ is akin to going to the dollar theater to see the midnight premiere of Avengers: Endgame—and getting free popcorn. But there is a caveat: Netflix has set a standard of incrementally raising its monthly charge for even its cheapest streaming package. This is a trend that Disney+ may adopt in the following years, and potential subscribers might want to consider that before re-upping automatically each year. That’s not the only thing families need to be aware of. Though there are some exceptions, Disney has built its brand on creating family-oriented content. But with each acquisition of other companies and services, that family-friendly image erodes. Imagine www.gulfcoastfamily.org

To advertise, call 727-612-0783

That said, Disney+ will almost certainly provide parental controls and kids’ accounts to help mitigate that potential problem. But those controls must still be set up intentionally by parents, many of whom may not do so. And for some kids, that could mean easy access to Rand M-rated content.

Disney’s Deepening Cultural Impact Disney, with its many franchises and sub-brands, already exerts tremendous cultural impact. But with the arrival of Disney+, the entertainment juggernaut’s reach will constitute an unprecedented reach from a single company into any household. Depending on your family’s stance regarding Disney’s content, this could be a good or bad news. Active, intentional parents should be able to customize this potential smorgasbord of Mouse House content into a menu of pretty positive choices for children. And it’s hard to see other streaming services matching what Disney will offer in this area. Still, even some of Disney’s most beloved properties and recent movies have increasingly exhibited a tendency to embrace progressive cultural themes. So while Disney+ may offer families more flexibility and options for wholesome programming at a lower price, intentional engagement and discernment will still be required for any family to make the most of that possibility. National Eye Exam Month

It is estimated that 12.3 million school-age children in the United States have a vision impairment. That is approximately one child out of four.

On August 28, 1963

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave one of the most memorable speeches in history. Speaking to over 200,000 civil rights demonstrators from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. In his speech Dr. King stated, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

August is National Eye Exam Month, so what better time to remind ourselves of the importance of vision care? If you or your children haven’t had an eye exam recently, now would be a great time to make an appointment with an eye care professional – either an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. Routine check-ups are vital in preventing eye disease and detecting visual impairment. Infants and toddlers should have their eyes checked by a pediatrician during routine medical appointments and children 5–19 should have their eyes screened every one to two years.

133,155 SETS August 14, 2019 of twins were born in the U.S. last year according to the National Vital Statistics Report which was released this past January. The annual Twins Days Festival takes place on the first full weekend of August each year in Twinsburg, Ohio and its attendees range in age from newborns to nonagenarians. So if you have a twin, whether you are identical or fraternal, young or old, grab your camera and have a blast doubling up at this year’s festival.

Move over summer, a new school year is coming! On August 14th all Pre-K – 12th grade local public school classes begin. Before you find yourself standing in line with other parents, pushing shopping carts filled with pencils and notebooks, do your own homework. Get your family organized and ready to head back to school!
