We’ve visited Michigan twice in the past few months—once to visit my grandparents, both of whom are in nursing homes, and once for my sister’s wedding. The trip to see my grandparents was cold enough — temperatures in the 20s, and windy. Only a little snow though, but it was enough that Hanna decided that she never needs to leave Florida again between the months of October and March. The other kids also admitted that Michigan-level cold might be a

Then we dragged them up again for the wedding, which happened to be during a blizzard and on the coldest day of winter up to that point in southeast Michigan (it has since been surpassed of course, by even more extreme temperatures from the polar vortex a few weeks later). Between the singledigit, and briefly sub-zero temperatures, the slippery sidewalks, and the even more slippery roads, I think they almost understand how good they have it here!

The people I admire—both living and deceased— are those who’ve extended themselves on behalf of others, who’ve given sacrificially above and beyond what is “normal” and who believe there’s no greater gift than laying down one’s life for someone else. I’m certainly not there yet, but I know what it looks like. There are many people whose lives would be good for us all to follow. Your daughter needs to know that they aren’t worthy of admiration just because they’re famous; they are people of great character, and they stand out because of it.

Florida Minor Settlements: Allen v. Montalyan by Chris Reynolds
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in the United States for minors. Each year, approximately 167,000 children are injured and 1,100 are killed in motor vehicle crashes.
Guardian Ad Litem Florida Statute 744.3025 requires that anytime there is a settlement where the gross amount is $50,000 or greater, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the minor’s interests. Further, in any case with a gross settlement that exceeds $15,000, the court may, at its discretion, appoint a guardian ad litem for the minor. Under Florida Statute 744.387, if the net settlement amount (after reduction of medical bills, attorney’s fees and costs, etc.) that will go to the minor exceeds $15,000, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem as well.
Court Approval Unsurprisingly, there are many automobile accident settlements involving minors. Florida has multiple laws to protect minors in these situations. One of the stated policy reasons for this is to prevent the parents or legal guardians from spending the settlement money before the child becomes an adult at age 18. There are two important things that may or may not be required for settlements for minors: (1) approval by a court of the settlement; and (2) appointment of a guardian ad litem for the minor who will represent the interests of the minor.
Some cases are settled before any lawsuit is filed, of course. However, these rules still apply to pre-suit settlements. For those cases where a lawsuit has been filed, every settlement must be approved by the court.
though there is no obligation to appoint a guardian ad litem. Some courts in Florida (but not all) require that even if the gross settlement amount is less than $50,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, the money must be put in a depository account and that money can only be removed from the account with Court approval.
Allen v. Montalvan In this case, multiple minor children were injured in a motor vehicle collision. Specifically, there was one adult who died, one adult who was injured, and three children who were injured. The at-fault party had only $50,000 total in insurance to cover all of these people. The $50,000 was given to the attorneys for the adults and children, but the insurance company did not specify how much was
If the injury claim for the minor is settled before the filing of any lawsuit and the gross settlement amount is less than $15,000, there is no general requirement to get court approval. If the gross settlement is greater than $15,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, but no lawsuit is filed, court approval of the settlement is required,
for each person. The attorneys ended up giving $25,000 to each adult, and gave none for the children. No court approval for this settlement was obtained. A couple of years later, the mother of the children filed a claim for injuries on behalf of the children. The insurance company asked the court to dismiss the claim, stating that the claim was already settled. Though the trial court initially agreed with the insurance company and dismissed the claim, the mother appealed on behalf of the children, and the appellate court disagreed. The appellate court reasoned that the gross settlement amount was $50,000, and since it involved children, a guardian ad litem was required. Accordingly, the initial settlement was not proper and the claim was still open for the children. As you can see, minor settlements can become very complex depending on many factors. If you or a loved one knows a minor who has been injured due to the negligence of someone, please call the experienced trial attorneys at Corless Barfield Trial Group for a free consultation to discuss your options.

To be more romantic, don’t make things about your happiness but about your wife’s happiness instead. When you do that, you’ll be romantic in her eyes. And Valentine’s Day will be just an extension of the natural romantic that you now are. Here are 4 ways you can make Valentine’s Day and your marriage not about you but about your wife.
1. Set her apart. It’s here, fellas. Valentine’s Day is upon is. To some, the mere thought may cause you to break into a cold sweat. It’s the one day of the year where we are supposed to be, no, have to be romantic with our spouse. Well, Valentine’s Day is really not the only day of the year we are supposed to be romantic, but it is one of those days where we are encouraged to do so and may be judged if we’re not. For those of us who don’t know the meaning of the word romantic or who don’t have a romantic bone in our bodies, it can be a challenge. For those of us who struggle in the romance department, there is a trick, a hack that can help you be the most ro-
mantic person on every day of the year. It’s simple, but not easy. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s not about you—and neither is your marriage. When we understand this and act according to it, romance will be easy. Try this: Think back to your dating days before you and your spouse were married. One of your biggest priorities was making things about her. The restaurant, the date night activity, the clothes or cologne you wore, the doors you opened for her. You made it about her. Then you got married. Maybe you chose to go wherever to eat, date nights disappeared, and she didn’t always smell the fresh fragrance of cologne on you. Now, she may
Your wife has a spot that nobody else can or should occupy. Not your kids, your parents, your golfing buddies, your boss, or anybody. Let her know this and let others know this, with your words and actions.
2. Take on the hard stuff on her behalf. Ever heard of “good cop, bad cop.” Sometimes you have to be the “bad cop” in your
marriage in order to keep her looking good. Being willing to have the next couple of difficult conversations with your kids or family members. Do whatever you can to take some of the heat off of her. Volunteer for some of the harder cleaning items around the house, particularly the ones you know she hates.
3. Love her like you’d want to be loved. You probably treat yourself pretty darn good. You do your best to encourage yourself, to take care of your body and do what you think is best for you. Do that for your wife. Love her in a way that makes her feel loved. Be sure to find out her love language first.
4. Get close and intimate with her.
Intimacy is doing or sharing things with a person that you don’t do with anyone else. Do that with your wife. Share your deepest feelings, concerns, fears, dreams, and anything else. Don’t hold anything back, and don’t let anything get between you and her. When you do these things you will have no problem being romantic, and your wife will know Valentine’s Day and your marriage is not about you, but your love for her.

The Young and the Young at Heart by Joy Lancaster
When I was teaching kindergarten, the month of February was always the time to celebrate our wonderful country, the United States of America. Children at that age are just becoming aware of the differences between their city, state, and country. If I asked my students what country they lived in, most of them would say, “Florida.” It was always fun finding ways to awaken a feeling of patriotism in their young minds. We learned about George Washington and made a paper plate face with a cotton ball wig. The face of Abraham Lincoln was graced with a black beard made by tracing their hands onto black paper. It is never too early to begin teaching our little ones to have a love and pride for our great country. Maybe your grandkids have watched animated films about the people who stand behind the founding of our country. Check with your local library for more of these DVDs and also for the beautiful picture books that are available. Let’s be sure our grandchildren experience all that makes our community unique among so many other great places to live here in the USA. Since we are blessed with beautiful weather most of the year, why not take advantage of the many outdoor activities along the Gulf Coast?

11 KEYS FOR
LOVING YOUR FAMILY
DUNGY DIARIES
by Tony Dungy
In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Derek Redmond believed he could win a silver medal for Great Britain. After five years of daily training and eight operations on his Achilles tendons, Derek had won the first two heats and was running in the semifinals of the 400 meters. Things were going as planned until, coming out of the first turn, he heard a snap and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Derek went down in a heap on the track as he realized that his left hamstring had exploded, and with it, his dreams of an Olympic medal. He got to his feet and began to run—hop, really—to finish the race. He later said that he was determined to finish and therefore waved off the race officials, who were running toward him with a stretcher. And then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
Redmond began to push the hand of assistance away until he turned to find himself looking into the face of his father, Jim. When Jim Redmond had seen what had happened to his son, he had pushed his way out of the crowd and onto the track and rushed to tell Derek that he didn’t have to finish. But when Derek insisted that he complete the race, Jim said they would do it together.
that they’re okay, to help them see that failure isn’t final and that when they take their next steps, they will not be alone. Quality time is important. Being actively engaged with our children in their schoolwork or their activities or by simply reading a book is important. But they need quantity time, too, and lots of it. Even if there’s nothing special on the agenda, they need to know that we’ve chosen to be in the room or in the house with them, over all other interest competing for our time.

Protein Smoothies: Protein balances blood sugar and keeps your energy level stable. Kids love them, too. Publix Greenwise Brand has a whey protein powder that offers a delicious taste for less than .80 a serving. You can add frozen fruit, or banana & peanut butter, or cinnamon & vanilla to jazz up the experience. The best part is that it is quick (less than 2 minutes) to make a smoothie, it is portable, it is nutritious and it’s delicious. Protein smoothies are great for breakfast, after school snacks, and especially beneficial before athletic events. Snacks: Most of the poor food choices occur around snacks. Failure to plan for hunger causes the brain to be attracted to anything unhealthy. For optimal energy and nutrition, pre-arrange healthy snacks like nuts, raisins, trail mix, dried fruit or string cheese. For an excellent “candy bar” alternative, try a Maple

Proper nourishment keeps everyone in the family healthy. The challenge is how do you ensure proper nourishment when schedules are so crazy? Food planning and preparation takes time. However, here are some creative healthy and fast food ideas.
Glazed, Pecan & Sea Salt Kind Bar. It’s delicious, portable and contains no added sugar. Lunches & Dinners: Meal planning and preparation are the biggest expenditures of time, but so worth it because of better health. To save time, ‘prepare once – eat twice!’ If you double the quantity of prepared food, you cut your time in half. The second portion can be for lunches or can be frozen for a dinner next week. Smart eating can still be accomplished fast. When fast turns into unhealthy, then illnesses can occur. Illness occurs for many more reasons other than poor food choices, as well. In next month’s paper my topic is Illness within the family where I will suggest some ideas for hope.

Give other kids, parents, and teachers the benefit of the doubt.
imom.com
Do you quickly jump to assuming that others have the worst motives? Or do you choose to believe that most people are decent–if imperfect–folks? Giving people the benefit of the doubt will save you and your child from a great deal of unnecessary drama. Maybe the coach really does like your kid, but thinks he needs to work harder in practice to deserve more playing time. Maybe the teacher really does want to see your child succeed, but thinks a “B” now will be worth more to her in the long run than an undeserved “A.” If you really are concerned and struggling to understand where they’re coming from, just ask. Go to the other parent, teacher or coach and express your concerns, but give them a chance to explain their thinking and motivation. When we assume the worst, we amp up Wrong. You were upset, and your feelings the drama, and we train our children to do were hurt for several days. But none of it re- the same. Be slow to anger. ally mattered in the end. Accept it as a tool for helping you learn how to cope with temporary disappointment. So before you start Now Enrolling – Please Call calling other moms and staging a protest, ask yourself if it will really matter in a year… or a week. We’re not saying there’s never a time to get involved or advocate for your child. But we are saying that those occasions are pretty rare. Keep your powder dry for something that does matter.
I’m the parent of a middle school girl. What does that mean? It means that I’m exposed to more drama than people living on Broadway. Drama about mean girls and feeling left out. Drama about boys and how they act and how confusing all of it is. Drama about changing bodies and how no one else has ever had to FEEL all of these FEELINGS! Just her! She’s the only one! Don’t get me wrong: I know that, to my daughter, all of this is very real. And that I have to be patient with her emotional status which is riding some sort of hormonal Tilt-A-Whirl. I need to listen, to soothe, to console. But guess what I don’t need to do? Get on the tilt-a-whirl with her. Crazy as it sounds, I see moms every day who buy into the drama and make it bigger than it is already. These are the moms whose own latent middle school insecurities come rushing back to the surface, at times, and make them, well…nuts. This is the exact opposite of what your daughter needs. She needs you to practice the How to Be a Low Drama Mama and help her keep her feet on the ground. She’s counting on you.
Remember what it was like to be that age…and how needless much of your anxiety was.
Sometimes our kids do such a convincing job of painting a picture of their desperate social/academic/performance woes, we buy into the hype. But slow down; just a second. Think back to that time in 6th grade when you didn’t get invited to THE sleepover of the year, and the world ended as you knew it. You never recovered, did you? Your life was over, right? www.gulfcoastfamily.org
Remember the goal.
Here’s the deal: Even when other people are acting badly or your kid is getting a bit of a raw deal, dial down the drama anyway. Why? Because since you can’t reengineer the world to always be good and fair for your child, your primary job as a parent is to train your child in how to respond to and cope with an imperfect world. By sinking lots of attention and emotional energy into what other people did, you allow your child to avoid the more important question of how they should respond. Dwell briefly on the offense, but move on to what you and your child should do in light of it, and they have lots of options!

Repeat after me, Mom: “It’s not about me.”
Much of the mama drama I see going on around me seems to be rooted in themother’s insecurity, which she is projecting onto (and training into) her child. It usually looks like a kid thinking, “Darn. I didn’t make cheerleader. That stinks. I’m disappointed,” and mama taking it to, “My baby didn’t make cheerleader because of a VAST CONSPIRACY rooted in community jealousy of her and total devotion to keeping her down.” If you are very quickly offended or upset regarding your child’s perceived successes or failures, or constantly worried about where your kid fits in the social hierarchy, you may be dabbling with Stage Mom Syndrome. Treat yourself and everyone–especially your child–will be better off.

It’s A… Giraffe Calf at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
BOY oh boy… what an exciting month! By now, you have probably “herd” the news out of Disney’s Animal Kingdom about the arrival of a new Masai giraffe calf who was born on the Kilimanjaro Safari savanna. Guests who were on the attraction that morning got to experience the wonder of nature firsthand and see some of the special moments leading up to the calf’s delivery. What better way to inspire our guests and cast than the magic of nature and the miracle of birth! “We’ve been keeping a close eye on Mom and baby, who are doing well. Since birth, the pair have been backstage nursing and bonding and will continue to stay backstage for the next month or two before going back out on the savanna.” Disney’s animal care team has been conducting neonatal exams during which they get a better gauge on the calf’s weight, height and gender. The cast at Animal Kingdom along with the Kilimanjaro Safaris drivers will be helping to choose a name for the calf – so stay tuned for updates. We’re excited to share two photos – one of mom and baby boy within an hour after the birth and a close up of the calf in which you’ll see he has a special heartshaped mark on his neck.

Spring training gets into full swing in February here in Florida, and for families who have a passion for our national pastime, spring training is the ideal time to see your favorite players at their pre-season best – having fun, willing to sign autographs and open to mingling with the fans. At Spring Training, you can watch players like Evan Longoria and Miguel Cabrera take morning batting practice in settings so intimate it feels as if they could just as easily be at your neighborhood ball field. As any true fan of baseball will tell you, Spring Training is not just about the game, it’s about the experience. Here are some tips to ensure that you and your family have an enjoyable day at the ballpark. • Bring your glove: Arrive at the park for morning workouts about 10am and you’ll see balls flying out into the parking lot. • Say cheese!: Spring Training is jam packed with Kodak moments, so have your camera ready. • Autograph please? Bring a couple new Sharpies and maybe a extra ball or two. The best opportunities are after morning workouts from about 10 to 11 a.m. • Get good seats: Spring Training ballparks are much smaller than their major league counterparts, so nearly every seat seems close to the field. • Plan for the weather: Remember to always WEAR SUNSCREEN. Don’t make the mistake that so many sun-seeking Midwesterners do. • Relax!: The absolute best part about a family spring training trip is the simplicity of it. This February and March, make it a point to take the family to a Spring Training ballgame and just maybe, you’ll start a fun new tradition. Of course, be prepared. Once might not be enough as the kids will be begging to go to more games.

Math Success Begins With Algebra Judy Adorno, Director, Sylvan of St. Petersburg In today’s society, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must understand algebraic concepts and be able to work with technology. Changes in society and new expectations of colleges and employers have revolutionized math curriculums. Success in algebra often correlates to success in college, so it is very important for today’s students to do their best with this critical subject. Parents can sometimes feel intimidated because they lack experience with updated math teaching and technology. What practical steps can be taken to ease parental concerns and help families build confidence in this new approach to middle and high school mathematics?
What Parents Need to Know
Students who take advanced mathematics courses during high school, and begin to study algebra during middle school, are at an advantage. Traditionally, students cannot take a higher-level mathematics class
in high school until they have successfully completed Algebra 1.
can restrict a student’s college options and limit their career aspirations.
it allows students to easily absorb and retain crucial math concepts.
What Parents Can Do
Fortunately, parents can nurture and build comprehension by blending common sense and state-of-the-art technology to ensure a positive learning experience. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to all ages, grades and skill levels, believes, in order to make competent decisions, children must learn to analyze facts and understand complex situations.
Persuade children to take additional math classes. Many students indicate that they do not plan to take math classes beyond their school requirements. Math classes offer critical learning skills that are needed throughout life. Success in algebra correlates with success in higher education and learning reasoning skills. Taking additional math classes helps children to become logical, independent thinkers.
According to research from Ohio State University’s Center for Cognitive Science, math technology and how-to instructional videos allow students to “come to the understanding themselves using their critical thinking skills instead of relying on memorization.”
Encourage children to take algebra early in their educational careers, if they are academically ready. Students who do not take courses covering algebraic concepts early in their schooling risk missing important opportunities for growth. By the end of junior and senior years, students who have not planned ahead, have fewer options in what classes they can take and may not be able to complete prerequisite courses. This
Incorporate technology. Technology should support math instruction and students should be encouraged to use all of the modern tools at their disposal to gain an understanding of the underlying reasoning and computations used in problem-solving. Educators believe that infusing learning aids and technology during in-school math instruction and homework completion provides an advantage at test time because
The Power of Parents
To support your child’s math learning, parents must believe that everyone can learn mathematics, and that learning math is essential to lifelong success. Experts agree that parents can encourage a positive attitude towards mathematics by boosting a child’s confidence and competence. Studies indicate that people who have experienced long-term difficulty with a subject tend to give up quicker than those who have met with success. Therefore, it is important for parents to intervene as soon as a child exhibit signs that he is struggling with a concept.

Plumb Elementary teacher named 2019 Teacher of the Year Nicole Kenngott, a fifth-grade teacher at Plumb Elementary, was named Pinellas County Schools’ 2019 Teacher of the Year. The award was presented Tuesday night during the Evening of Excellence at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. All 130 nominees were also recognized at the event. Kenngott began her career with Pinellas County Schools four years ago. She has Master’s degree from Dowling College in Oakdale, NY and has a teaching style that uses innovative teaching strategies steeped in the philosophy of a “Growth Mindset”, AVID strategies, CHAMPS and Restorative Practices.
The open enrollment period for the Florida Prepaid College Plan is underway. The Florida Prepaid College Plan allows families to lock in college plan prices and prepay the future cost of college tuition and fees. When students are ready for college, the plan pays costs covered under the plan at Florida colleges or universities. The enrollment period will close April 30. Through March 2, Florida Prepaid is celebrating its 30th anniversary by making enrollment FREE. Use the promo code 30YEARS to save $50 today. Learn more and apply at www.myfloridaprepaid.com.
Plumb Elementary Principal Sandra Kemp said that Kenngott has a positive impact on the entire school community. “She often leads parent curriculum events, attends PTA functions, interprets for parents who are deaf or hard of hearing, supports activities for our students with autism, and attends sports events to cheer on some of her students,” Kemp said. “She is a champion for children and for continual learning.” Kenngott will now be entered into the state Teacher of the Year competition sponsored by the Florida Department of Education.
The other top 10 finalists for Outstanding Educator were also recognized Tuesday night. They are: • Andrea Anderson, St. Petersburg High • Karen Bulino, Seminole Middle • Michelle Hajian, High Point Elementary • Lauren Iovino, Boca Ciega High • Angela Johnson-Drummond, McMullen Booth Elementary • Autumn Lunin, Safety Harbor Middle • Emily Maker, North Shore Elementary • Candace Reed, Azalea Elementary • Wendy Stryker, Safety Harbor Elementary In addition to naming the Teacher of the Year, Candace Reed was given the Outstanding Educator Fan Favorite Award. This award category was voted on by students, parents and the community via the Pinellas Education Foundation’s website.

The Most Romantic Gift — Keep a lifelong fascination with your spouse by Dr. Greg Smalley American couples spend billions each Valentine’s Day. Romantic cards, candy, flowers, candlelit dinners and even expensive jewelry — are these what true romance is all about? I’m not knocking such gestures, and this year I’ll likely buy some items on that list. But these things are mere romantic tokens. Gifts and dinner dates can enhance romance, but they do not define romance. Some couples fail to understand its essence and have instead replaced the heart of romance with symbolic tokens and obligatory outings.
thoughts, beliefs, opinions, fears, desires, needs, hopes and dreams. However, after we’d been married for a few years, we encountered a romance buster – we became accustomed to each other. We gradually stopped asking questions and started believing that we knew everything there was to know about each other.
Proverbs 5:18-19 aptly describes the heart of romance: “Rejoice in the wife of your youth….May you always be captivated by her love”. True romance is more about being captivated by your spouse than buying flowers or chocolate. Captivation is all about curiosity and interest – being allured by your spouse.

Every marriage has areas that are working well and areas that could use improvement. marriage, it’s important to evaluate these areas and give them the attention they need. Here’s the great news: Romance and passion don’t have to naturally fade. I learned to nurture romance by renewing my mindset daily. I changed my attitude from seeking comfort in the familiar to remaining curious. When I pursue staying current with Erin’s inner world,
I’m captivated by her feelings, needs, fears, hopes and dreams, which is the very stuff that I spent hours learning about during our dating, engagement and early marriage years.

Adoption is Beautiful It was the middle of a work day, and my phone buzzed with multiple text messages coming through. I looked down to see who had so much to say on a Tuesday afternoon. It was my mom. I moved away from home eight months ago with my husband, and in that time my mother, has taken a job working for Destiny Adoption Services in Florida. When she first started working there I thought it was glamourous. I was jealous. That day, my heart broke as I read the words she’d typed—the strongest woman I know was struggling with
the weight of placing these precious babies. All too quickly I realized that I had heard so many stories of children finding their forever homes, but I was completely ignoring the beginning of those stories. Needless to say, I stopped being jealous. Adoption is beautiful, but before there is adoption, there is a child without a home.
do you make sure that he finds his forever home? You fight for him.

I have met a handful of truly great ladies in my life but none compare to the women I’ve met fighting for these children. As I follow from afar the progress Destiny has made in bridging the gap between birth moms, children, and adoptive parents, I’m convinced more than ever that I am watching Christ in action.

Though I have little experience in the world of adoption, I am no stranger to feeling guilty and unlovable. Aren’t we all familiar with shame on some level? Many of us learn to live with it, holding hands with the shame and altering the course of our lives to navigate the toxic seas within us. I didn’t talk to anyone about the self-hatred I harbored until I was already an adult, and to this day I wrestle with old feelings of guilt. When I finally told someone what I was struggling with, I was able to partner with a new mentality: acceptance. As a grown woman, this acceptance is revolutionary. As a child, this acceptance is vital.
Adoption Journey
I cannot claim to know the heart of a child waiting to be adopted, but if I have paid any attention since my mother began working at Destiny, I can say that the end-goal is a forever home. It is for someone to say “Yes!” to you, someone to invite you in to stay, someone to accept you for all that you are and all that you may be, someone to love you unconditionally. This new mentality seems normal to those of us who grew up in homes like that, but to someone who was not allowed to grow where they were planted, it is a a whole new world. Every day there are circumstances leading another birth mom to Destiny’s door, and every day those ladies are fighting hard to ensure the children they meet know that they are indeed someone’s “Yes!” The acceptance that these sweet ones need is not only in their forever homes, but in the attitudes and work ethics of their advocates. Because of people like Lisa Cuffaro (Founder and Director of Destiny Adoption Services), these children won’t feel unlovable.
Destiny Adoption Services and Consulting, Inc is a private not-for-profit adoption organization that provides adoption services to birth parents who are considering placing their child for adoption and to prospective adoptive parents who wish to grow their family. Our team offers the best in support services for the adoptive family and the birth parent, including counseling services and assistance connecting the right child with the right family in both private and dependency adoption. We understand the adoption journey will be one of the most profound moments in your life, and we want to be by your side every step of the way. www.gulfcoastfamily.org

with Jim Daly Q: I heard a speaker say recently that we should set goals for our relationships. I understand setting objectives for your career, health, finances, etc. But I’m not really tracking with how this could improve my marriage. What are your thoughts? Jim: My wife, Jean, and I often talk to our sons about their goals. They usually mention things like grades or what they hope to achieve in sports. Those are great. But we like to encourage them to think outside the box. Like, what can they do to develop their character as well?

better, intentionally build character into your marriage. Be more considerate, more patient or more forgiving with each other. And share positive feedback as you each see the other grow.
Of course, for a happy relationship you need something a little more inspiring than “staying together.” So find ways to keep your interest in each other alive. Read books or watch movies you can discuss afterward. Have a common goal, like saving for that dream vacation. Even
MAKING VALENTINE’S DAY THOUGHTFUL AND HEARTFELT
And that prompted Jean and me to do some thinking: setting goals for our marriage is a great idea, too.
Q: I’ve come to dread Valentine’s Day, and I think my wife feels the same. It’s gotten so commercial. And don’t get either of us started on the implied pressure to match other people’s Instagram-perfect romantic gestures! What’s your take? Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: A growing number of couples feel the commercialism surrounding Valentine’s Day has reduced romance to a sack full of trinkets purchased at the last minute. It’s almost as if, on Feb. 14, love isn’t legitimately expressed if it doesn’t take the

Start by giving careful thought to what makes your spouse feel loved. Maybe the traditional store-bought ideas really are the way to their heart. Or maybe they’d prefer a cozy night by the fireplace sipping hot chocolate. But it’s also important that we make an effort to inject that same passion into our marriage on a regular basis. Husbands and wives have the opportunity to create romance every day of the year. We all have busy lives, so I know it’s not easy. But if we’re intentional about it, there are countless ways we can express our devotion. Maybe it’s a date night, or a nice card, or just a quick email during the day to say, “I love you and I’m thinking about you.” I can almost guarantee that something along those lines will mean more to your spouse in July or September than it does on Feb. 14!
Pinellas Academy is a SACS Accredited Charter School offering: Whatever you do, the important thing is to be intentional, thoughtful and heartfelt. Keeping the spark alive requires effort every day — and it’s worth it.
SIBLINGS CAN’T AGREE ON HOW TO HELP AGING MOTHER WITH FINANCES Q: My mom is in her late 80s and needs assisted living care, but her assets are insufficient to cover the cost. My older sister and I are tightening our belts to help out. Our other (younger) sister and her husband say they can’t contribute due to lack of financial resources. But they both have good jobs and healthy incomes. They buy expensive cars and go on extravagant annual vacations (which they have sometimes invited us to join). Meanwhile, we’re helping out willingly but at great sacrifice. It’s hard not to feel resentful. What should we do? Jim: Much depends upon the relational dynamics within your family. Are you on good terms with the sister who isn’t contributing to your mother’s upkeep? (Since she’s invited you to go on their vacations,
that sounds fairly positive.) If so, you need to start talking about this. It would probably be a good idea to bring all three sisters together for an honest conversation. Tell your younger sister what you’re thinking and feeling and solicit her honest feedback. If you need help covering the cost of your mother’s care, come right out and say so. It’s best if all of you could sit down together and hash this out face to face. Only then will you be able to start cooperating as a team. But if the relationship isn’t conducive to this kind of healthy dialogue, you may have no choice except to resign yourself to the situation as it is. You can’t control your sibling or tell her what to do, even when you think it’s the right thing. You can only try to set a good example by doing what you believe to be right. If your sister would rather have new cars and exotic vacations, that’s her choice. She’s missing out on an important life experience in terms of accepting responsibility and honoring your mother -- but there probably isn’t much you can do to convince her of that. She’ll have to find it out for herself.
DEALING WITH PARENTING IMPERFECTIONS Q: How can I deal with my shortcomings as a parent? I love my family dearly and do my best, but I feel like I make a lot of mistakes with my kids. Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Parenting has a way of sometimes highlighting our imperfections. Thankfully, being a good parent doesn’t mean having to be a perfect parwww.gulfcoastfamily.org

with Jim Daly 3. What will I do differently next time? 4. What’s my next move to reconnect with my child and move forward? As I’ve worked through these questions in specific parenting situations, I’ve also developed more and more empathy and understanding for other parents -- including my own. Along the way, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to continue learning grace, forgiveness, humility, love and patience through my role as an imperfect dad. Even though we can drive each other nuts sometimes, as a family we’ve also come
to understand one another at a very deep level, and that fosters genuine empathy and connection within our home. You can become a better parent by taking advantage of specific parenting tools (like our organization’s 7 Traits of Effective Parenting Assessment, which you can find at FocusOnTheFamily.com/ parenting). Find out where your strengths lie and maximize those. Learn what your weaknesses are and work to shore those up. And, as should be the case in every area of life, be ready to apologize and repair when needed.
KEEPING A HEALTHY BALANCE IN MARRIAGE Q: My new husband and I are excited about starting married life together. We have big plans for the next few years -careers, starting a family, etc. -- but we also know we need to be realistic. Do you have any advice for prioritizing?
Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: It’s pretty common for young couples to want it all -- a family and career success. And that’s not necessarily bad. More than anything, though, remember this: how you handle opportunities that come your way over the next few years will either benefit your family or harm it. Let’s say your spouse is up for a big promotion, but it will require your family to relocate to another state. How will that impact your career? How will it impact your children? Those are big decisions. As you work through them, keep a few things in mind. First, complement each other. Note the difference: “compliment” (with an I) means “say nice things to and about each other.” And that’s important to do. But “complement” (with an E) means “work together as a team.” Channel your competitiveness into your career, not your family. at home and at work will shift over time as the needs of your family change. Be willing to adapt. Third, and most important of all, let the health of your marriage guide every decision you make. Career goals and a bigger earning potential are important considerations. But more zeroes on your paycheck won’t improve a bad marriage. Even if you’ve been married for a while, a healthy balance between your career and your family begins with the decisions you make today. Love is a Powerful Motivator Dr. Kira Wilson
Red and pink hearts are everywhere. Boxes of chocolates and roses fill the entrance to grocery and retail stores this month. It’s a reminder to celebrate Valentine’s Day and share a little love. Love is defined differently depending on who you ask. It’s about romance for some, commitment for others, or a feeling you have for someone special. The term love is used to describe one’s feeling for pizza, a good book, a pet or family member. When asked what love is, one
FREET!! EVEN
Kindergarten student thoughtfully responded, “Love is when you try to make someone feel good.” However it may be defined, love is a powerful motivator. In addition to motivating young men to work hard to provide for a family, for independent women to compromise their career path and new parents to return to their roots, love can motivate children to obey, to achieve in school, and to love others.

Parents and teachers are given the opportunity to train children in a manner that is rooted in love. Parenting (and teaching) styles vary, but studies show that children with parents who demonstrate love through support and encouragement (authoritative parenting style) are more likely to obey family rules and follow the model and values set by parents. Parental love motivates children to want to please their parents. Unlike the authoritarian parent who rules with an iron fist, or the permissive parent with low expectations and limited boundaries, children in a loving home, with authoritative parents, are more likely to meet the high expectations to succeed in school. This is also true for students in a classroom with a teacher who practices an authoritative approach, rather than an authoritarian or permissive one. Teachers who express love and offer support to their students are more effective teachers. Research reports that students who feel cared for by their teachers perform better in school and work hard to complete challenging tasks. Children respond positively when a teacher takes an interest in them and exercises patience in teaching. Love and kindness builds the relationship, bringing about a desire to satisfy the teacher. Love is more than a feeling. Love is a practice. The Bible is replete with chapters devoted to defining love. A common passage read at weddings, 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 in the New Testament, is a meaningful description of what love is and what love is not. Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not provoke, is not arrogant, and does not hold grudges. Genuine love is sacrificial. It is putting the needs of others above your own. When instruction is rooted in love, children blossom and learn to love others. To consider each and every love “is” and “does not” read 1 Corinthians 13 online at: BibleGateWay.com For more information on Parenting Styles visit: www.LifeandLearning.net. The Planets align with NASA video on the big screen for the 100th anniversary of Holst’s sonic trip through the galaxy. Based in astrology, which enthralled Gustav Holst, each section is meant to capture the character of the planet.
