Parent to Parent The first time I ever visited Kennedy Space Center was in April of 1990, on my high school senior trip. Back in those days, they had the IMAX theater and the bus tour, and you had to buy separate tickets for each. I believe some of the other attractions may have been under construction at the time I was there, but I don’t remember being able to see anything else.
building to the launch site burns diesel fuel at a rate of 150 gallons per mile, and (2) that a bird pooped on my principal’s wife while we were waiting to board the bus tour. When I was on the tour again years later, and the guide pointed out the eagle’s nest on the property, I did remember that as well. But unlike the other two memories, it had slipped my mind in the meantime. Thirteen years later, when our two sons were six and two, and we had recently moved to the Tampa Bay area, we went back for our next visit. And it had certainly changed a lot! There were several new exhibits, the Saturn V Center had been added to the bus tour, and there was even a replica of a space shuttle for the kids to explore. Our oldest, David, was completely captivated, so we upgraded our tickets to annual passes and went back several times during that year. We’ve been back a few more times since those annual passes expired, but not nearly as often, and our youngest, Haylee, didn’t really remember it. So when we had some family visit from out of
The two most significant memories I had from that visit are (1) that the crawler transporter that moves the space shuttle from the assembly

state a few months ago, we took them and Haylee to have another look. The Atlantis complex with the actual retired shuttle and multiple shuttlerelated shows and exhibits was a new feature since our last visit almost nine years ago. Haylee had a lot of fun exploring the shuttle cockpit and especially sliding down the re-entry slide. With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this month, if you’re like us, and it’s been a while since you’ve visited the Kennedy Space Center, now may be a really great time to make the trip. Until next time,
Jennifer

DUNGY DIARIES
3 THINGS YOU NEED TO REMEMBER
WHEN YOU GET OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING by Tony Dungy
“Twenty years from now you will be disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -Mark Twain Getting up in the morning is not for the faint of heart. Being a man is not easy, but it never has been, I would guess. The demands on us are many; the hours in the day are still capped at twenty-four. We get tugged, second-guessed, pulled in different directions, and at the end of the day we are left wondering what
happened. And sometimes it seems like those are the good days. You have to have strength and courage. One of the most important things I have learned along the way is this…
1. Stand out from the crowd.
I’ve learned that it is important to have the courage to stand by my convictions, those things that I know are right, those guiding principles that I know to stick with. Sometimes that means standing out from the crowd or not being popular, but sometimes that’s the only responsible place to be. It doesn’t necessarily make the days any easier, but at least I feel like I’m still heading in the right
“
No one is immune to peer pressure, and we’re susceptible to it at any age.
”
direction when the day is over and the next one is on its way.
2. Everyone is susceptible to pressure.
No one is immune to peer pressure, and we’re susceptible to it at any age. It’s just that as we get older, we do a better job of rationalizing it or hiding it altogether. But through the years, I’ve learned another way of dealing with it. Courage can be demonstrated by standing up to the school bully or intervening to prevent someone you don’t know
from being hurt. But more often than not, it’s the day-to-day moments of reaching down inside yourself to find the courage to stand alone that can be the toughest.
3. Be aware of your internal compass.
I pay attention to my internal compass. I think it has always been there, guiding me, but as I’ve matured, I’ve listened to it better and more often. It helps me stay “lashed to the mast,” as Homer wrote of Odysseus doing to keep from being drawn into destruction by the Sirens. That Greek myth resonates because we can relate to that feeling. Even when we know we are heading toward something that could lead to our destruction, it can still seem awfully appealing. That internal compass, sharpened by having positive peers around me and by studying my Bible, keeps me lashed to the mast.

Our children spend way too much time indoors. Science has proven that being outside and active is not only physically healthy, but also mentally beneficial. Teach them how to swim. Go biking, hiking or on a long run. Perhaps take up tennis. The options are endless.
3. HOUSEHOLD CHORES.
As hard as it is to imagine, one day our children will be living independently. They will have a big head start on life if they aren’t living in squalor. Show them how to run the vacuum, clean the toilets, push a mop, and make up a bed properly. Introduce them to the washing machine and how to operate it without turning their clothes pink. Set up weekly chores to be completed and stick with it.

Popular culture tends to breed selfish desire and unrealistic expectations of what we think we deserve. As parents, we can counter that by teaching our children to have a charitable heart and humble nature. Have a clean sweep day and load up all those toys not being used. Gather up the mountain of clothing that is of great need to others. Donate it all to your favorite source. Also, designate a volunteer day where you and the kids donate your time to any number of areas beneficial to society.
5. HANDY LIFE SKILLS.
Americans increasingly waste millions of dollars on repairs and jobs we could easily do ourselves. We don’t always need to “call the man.” Teach the kids basic skills such as how to mow the lawn or paint the front porch. Learning how to change a flat tire and jumpstart a battery are both essential. Even the most simple of tasks such as changing AC filters, replacing bulbs and flood lights or fixing a leaky faucet are skills that need to be taught. We should teach our kids self-reliance, not dependence.

Florida Minor Settlements – Allen v. Montalyan by Chris Reynolds
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in the United States for minors. Each year, approximately 167,000 children are injured and 1,100 are killed in motor vehicle crashes. Unsurprisingly, there are many automobile accident settlements involving minors. Florida has multiple laws to protect minors in these situations. One of the stated policy reasons for this is to prevent the parents or legal guardians from spending the settlement money before the child becomes an adult at age 18. There are two important things that may or may not be required for settlements for minors: (1) approval by a court of the settlement; and (2) appointment of a guardian ad litem for the minor who will represent the interests of the minor.
Guardian Ad Litem Florida Statute 744.3025 requires that anytime there is a settlement where the gross amount is $50,000 or greater, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the minor’s interests. Further, in any case with a gross settlement that exceeds $15,000, the court may, at its discretion, appoint a guardian ad litem for the minor. Under Florida Statute 744.387, if the net settlement amount (after reduction of medical bills, attorney’s fees and costs, etc.)
12 • July 2019
that will go to the minor exceeds $15,000, the court must appoint a guardian ad litem as well.
Court Approval Some cases are settled before any lawsuit is filed, of course. However, these rules still apply to pre-suit settlements. For those cases where a lawsuit has been filed, every settlement must be approved by the court. If the injury claim for the minor is settled before the filing of any lawsuit and the gross settlement amount is less than $15,000, there is no general requirement to get court approval. If the gross settlement is greater than $15,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, but no lawsuit is filed, court approval of the settlement is required, though there is no obligation to appoint a guardian ad litem.
children who were injured. The at-fault party had only $50,000 total in insurance to cover all of these people. The $50,000 was given to the attorneys for the adults and children, but the insurance company did not specify how much was for each person. The attorneys ended up giving $25,000 to each adult, and gave none for the children. No court approval for this settlement was obtained. A couple of years later, the mother of the children filed a claim for injuries on behalf of the children. The insurance company asked the court to dismiss the claim, stating that the claim was already settled. Though the trial court initially agreed with the insurance company and dismissed the claim, the mother appealed on behalf of the
Some courts in Florida (but not all) require that even if the gross settlement amount is less than $50,000 and the net amount to the minor is less than $15,000, the money must be put in a depository account and that money can only be removed from the account with Court approval.
Allen v. Montalvan In this case, multiple minor children were injured in a motor vehicle collision. Specifically, there was one adult who died, one adult who was injured, and three
Say you saw it in the Gulf Coast Family Newspaper
children, and the appellate court disagreed. The appellate court reasoned that the gross settlement amount was $50,000, and since it involved children, a guardian ad litem was required. Accordingly, the initial settlement was not proper and the claim was still open for the children. As you can see, minor settlements can become very complex depending on many factors. If you or a loved one knows a minor who has been injured due to the negligence of someone, please call the experienced trial attorneys at Corless Barfield Trial Group for a free consultation to discuss your options.

When it comes to helping our children stay on track academically, we need to mimic Mrs. Carson’s determination. At a minimum, make sure your children read a little every day. Help them find fun books they’ll enjoy. Use our reading log (www.imom. com) and get them excited to read by giving them reading rewards: ice cream, a trip to the park, or something else they love. Also let them know that you believe in them and expect great things from them. Mrs. Carson took that approach, and Dr. Ben Carson says that’s what gave him the confidence to succeed.
2. The Time Managing Mom.
Since our kids work hard during the school year, it’s only natural to want to keep them smart during the summer too. It just doesn’t make sense to let all of that learning slip away during the summer months. So we have some summer ideas for kids to keep them smart. We found our inspiration for these ideas from some pretty sharp moms; Sonya Carson, mother of Dr. Ben Carson, our own Content Director Susan Merrill, and Jill Savage, a mother of five children who makes learning fun year-round. Here are 3 Summer Ideas for Kids to Keep Them Smart: First, we want to acknowledge that there are many approaches to keeping our kids sharp
during the summer. Some moms choose a more structured approach like tutoring programs or even summer school classes. Other moms use workbooks or worksheets to maintain skills learned during the previous school year. Whichever approach you choose, consider the ideas of these really great moms as you come up with your own summer ideas.
1. The No Excuses Mom.
Sonya Carson had 23 siblings. She married when she was 13 years old. She had a third grade education and was not a proficient reader. But Sonya was determined to make sure her sons got a good education and they did. Her oldest son, Curtis, became an engineer, and her youngest, Ben, became a neurosurgeon and political activist.
Summer is great for teaching our children new habits that will actually help them during the school year. That’s the philosophy of our Content Director Susan Merrill. And one of the skills that will help your children the most throughout their school years is time management. The key to teaching your children how to manage their time is to help them prioritize. What are the things that your family values most? If it is family time, how much of a priority do you give to having a weekly family night? How often does your family eat dinner together? As you help your children manage their time, think about what is important enough to commit time to each day, whether it is quiet time with God, family time, school studies, extra-curricular activities, or just play time. Next, help them examine how they actually spend their time. If getting good grades is a top priority, but they spend more time play-
Once they’ve done that, talk with them about having some brain time every day. (Susan’s time management ideas are from her free e-book, Every School Year Counts.)
3. The Learning is Fun Mom.
Summer learning doesn’t have to be boring or overly structured… but it pretty much has to be fun! So even though you might feel an urge to expound on some academic topic, try not to. Instead, author and mom of five Jill Savage says use the relaxed atmosphere of summer to teach your children life lessons while you’re doing fun things with them. We all want the “perfect summer” for our kids, but rather than activities and schedules making up the perfect summer, it’s actually the not-scheduled spontaneous activities that make memories: running in the sprinkler, having picnics on the porch, laying on the ground and looking for shapes in the clouds, catching fireflies after dark. Sure, have some plans in place, but let spontaneity lead the way. • Prioritize relationships over tasks. • Be creative and make some messes. • Lecture less and laugh more. These are the elements that make up a beautiful summer.

ing video games than studying, then they will need to adjust their schedule. Or if they have so many activities planned that there is no down time or family time, consider cutting back their commitments to allow for more free time.

Maybe the reason you don’t pursue date nights with your husband with more intention is that it has become just…so…predictable. Break out of the rut with some new ideas that go beyond dinner and a movie.
1. L ive theatre, live concerts — live anything.
There’s something about a live performance that’s a bit more exhilarating than a recorded version. Seek out a great play, a concert, or even a coffee house with some live entertainment to spice up your weekend with your spouse.
2. Go ethnic.
Go off your regular culinary path by trying out a new type of cuisine. Most cities now offer a wealth of eateries representing every corner of the map, from Thai fusion to Ethiopian to Cuban—you might just find new flavors you love!
3. Take a risk.
Okay, listen. We know that “risky” is a relative term. For someone else, it might be skydiving. For you it might be strapping on ice skates. We’re not saying you have to go crazy, but try something together that’s just a wee bit outside your comfort zone. Again, you don’t have to juggle knives here. Just get your heart rate up a bit!
4. Get artsy.
It’s one thing to stroll through a museum together, hand in hand. (And not a bad date idea in and of itself.) It’s another thing to roll up your sleeves and create something yourself. Lots of museums and studios offer couples’ classes in sketching, painting, pottery—the list is endless. Don’t forget your sense of humor!
Dana Hall McCain writes about marriage, parenting, faith and wellness for iMOM. She’s a mom of two, and has been married to a wonderful guy for 17 years.
5. Move together. www.iMom.com
iMOM exists for you—to inspire you to love your family well. We want to give you help and hope so that you can enjoy the days to come...being a mom!
Excellent Service With Savings!
We know you’ve watched Dancing with the Stars and thought, “That looks fun.” Whether you’ve tried ballroom or any other type of dancing before, there are classes for couples of all skill levels—from beginners to advanced. Who knows? You may find out that you’re the perfect Ginger Rogers to his Fred Astaire.
6. Go all smarty-pants.
If you live near a college or university, you’re within reach of a wealth of opportunities to hear fascinating lectures on topics of current interest and readings from amazing authors. Even if you don’t have a college nearby, check with your local library for special events and visiting authors.

Sometimes we try something just to be able to say we did. I was reminded of this in a yoga class recently, when a classmate brought her husband to try it out. He could hardly keep from laughing out loud at our teachers’ suggestions to “breathe deeply” and “focus on the light within.” Trying to get into the poses? Even funnier to him. The couple kept exchanging glances of total amusement. Will he become a devoted yogi? Doubtful. Did they have a hilarious conversation about that class on the ride home? I’d be willing to bet my life on it.

Kirby the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Released With Satellite Tracker 225-Pound Loggerhead Sea Turtle Goes Home After Months of Rehab Clearwater Marine Aquarium released Kirby, a 225-pound endangered loggerhead sea turtle, on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Kirby is an adult male sea turtle who was found floating near Indian Rocks Beach on January 29, 2019. CMA staff rescued Kirby and found a T-shaped wound on his head, several barnacles and algae on his carapace. He also had a buoyancy issue suspected to be caused by a GI tract problem.
hospital and could watch him via his live webcam. After several months of rehabilitation, he fully recovered and was ready to return to the wild.
Satellite Tracking to Help Protect Sea Turtles Kirby was satellite tagged prior to release so Clearwater MarineAquarium can evaluate his movements. Satellite
His treatment plan consisted of fluids, vitamins, antibiotics, and monitoring body temperature. Kirby steadily gained weight and his buoyancy improved. Visitors were able to view Kirby as he rehabilitated at CMA’s marine animal
tracking is beneficial for research purposes, including the migration of sea turtles, their foraging behavior and other information that can help conservation efforts to protect them. There is very limited data available on male sea turtles, and Kirby’s path will provide valuable data for researchers and veterinary teams following his release. However, sea turtle satellite trackers can cost over $5,000, so a Facebook fundraiser was created to help cover the cost. Over 170 supporters contributed and raised the money for Kirby’s tracker.
Kirby was cleared for release by both our veterinarian and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). CMA staff, volunteers and supporters gathered at Clearwater Beach to see Kirby return home. We all wish him well back in the Gulf of Mexico and look forward to tracking his journey.
“Kirby’s release is both rewarding and emotional for our team who has worked hard for months on his rehabilitation,” says David Yates, CEO of CMA. “Seeing a rescued animal return home to the ocean where they belong is one of the best parts of our job.”

Bill & Pam Farrel
Ride Down Memory Lane Julie and Mike had been married for twenty-four years when she sent me the email for my book, 52 Ways to Wow Your Husband: Put a Smile on His Face. She described her most creative wow date for her guy, a real ride down memory lane: When I met my husband, he was a “wild at heart” twenty-four-year old whose primary source of transportation was a very fast motorcycle! Shortly after children arrived on the scene, we sold the bike and bought a used mini-truck, which was much more suited to carrying bicycles, golden retrievers, and other “kid stuff.” It must have been hard for him, but he never complained. Our most creative date came just after we sent our youngest child off to kindergarten. On the morning of our anniversary I gave him a card with money I had secretly saved up and directions to our
first destination—a motorcycle shop where I had arranged to rent a HarleyDavidson for the weekend. It was such a thrill to see the smile on his face as we climbed onto that bike. It took us back to the time when we fell in love! Our final stop was a little romantic cabin in the mountains where we celebrated— kid, dog, and truck free! I was blessed to be able to remind him that I will never forget who he is or the many selfless sacrifices he makes for our family. What does your man need to remember about himself? Take him back to: • The stadium • The wilderness • The ranch • The ocean or lake • The racetrack Husbands can wow their wives this way too. What did your wife love when you first met her? I loved photography, but I gave up hopes for a nice camera when we married in exchange for more practi-
cal and immediate needs—helping Bill garner his seminary degree. So the camera he gave me for a mid-life Christmas has much more meaning that Kodak™ ever estimated! This month ask yourself, “What does my mate need to remember about him or herself?” and then make a wow date of this truth and ride down memory lane. Take him back to where he loved to be when you first met him and let him enjoy some of his first loves. Take her back to the places she enjoyed when you first started dating or that first year of marriage. Tell him/her what you first saw attractive, what first caught your eye. Try this simple and thoughtful way to wow your spouse and you will be sure to put a smile on his or her face! Bill and Pam Farrel are international speakers, authors of over 35 relationship books including best selling Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti. They are also mid-life specialists, Bill is the facilitator of www.midlife.com, Pam is founder of www.seasonedsisters.com and together they will host an upcoming PEAK Living conference for those in life’s second half. www.Love-wise.com

Seminole Middle School earns prestigious national recognition for character education Pinellas County students receive national recognition at Carnegie Hall Four Pinellas students and their art teachers were honored at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June.
Seminole Middle was presented with the Promising Practices Award this past month at the Florida Character Education Conference. The recognition showcases innovative best practices that are having an impact across the nation and abroad. The school’s award specifically recognizes the practice of Character Circles, which allow students to apply the school’s core character traits through rich and reflective conversations.
Seminole Middle School will be invited to the National Conference on Character Education through Character. org to be recognized and share the school’s work. Seminole Middle School is the only Pinellas district school to receive this distinction for the 2018-2019 school year. The school plans to pursue the state and national character education awards. Character education plays an integral role at Seminole Middle School, where it helps the school develop a positive school-wide culture across the diverse student body. The circles are student-led with the teacher assuming the role as a facilitator. Common discussion topics for circles include solving school problems, supporting the local community, support systems for all students, academic performance and enhancing school culture.

You have all had the experience of making something where there once was nothing, so you know that anything is possible,” said Tina Fey who opened the ceremonious night. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12.

The countdown is on! This July will mark 50 years since the historic Apollo 11 mission launched for its journey to the Moon from LC-39 at Kennedy Space Center. Visitors from around the globe will be able to relive the experience and more at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, through a series of events and celebrations designed to commemorate the anniversaries of the launch, journey and landing.
July 15 | Apollo/Saturn V Center Transformation Celebration In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 and the ongoing anniversaries of each mission of the Apollo Program, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is enhancing the Apollo/Saturn V Center. On July 15, 2019 at 10:30 AM, join the visitor complex for the grand transformation celebration of this attraction that highlights NASA’s Apollo Program. The event will begin in the Apollo 8 Firing Room, the preshow theater that showcases the actual launch control consoles from Apollo 8. Robert Cabana, the director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and representatives and Delaware North (the operator of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex) will be there to share highlights of what is new inside the facility. At the conclusion of this brief ceremony, you are invited to be among the first to tour around the transformed Apollo/ Saturn V Center. Interactive and immersive exhibits will bring those first small steps to life, celebrating the mile-
stones of this era in space exploration and its worldwide influence. Some of the new exhibits include:
from Apollo 7 – 11 and how each played a critical role in the journey to the Moon.
• Moonscape - Engage in interactive challenges like landing the lunar module (LM) just like in Apollo 11. Plus, explore a 3D model to learn how the LM worked.
• The Saturn V Rocket - Learn about the team that built the most powerful rocket ever built, how it was made and how it was later assembled inside the Vehicle Assembly Building.
• Touch the Moon - Feel like a part of the Moon landing as you leave your own footprints on the lunar surface below you. Then, take a moment to reach for the rock and touch the Moon!
• Perfect Trajectory - Explore the launch path of the Saturn V rocket through interactive displays and a highly detailed accompanying model.
• Command Service Module - Get up close to a real command service module (CSM), the spacecraft that took astronauts to the Moon.
• Media Mania - Dive into the “media mania” of the Apollo era through cameras, media badges and other artifacts from before the digital age.
• Fisher Space Pen - Learn about this pen’s ability to write in microgravity and its use in many space missions.
• Getting to the Moon – Learn about the missions that lead up to the historic Moon landing, what we did on the Moon and how we plan to go back.
• 1960s Living Room and Bar - Imagine you and your family huddled around a television watching the Moon landing in this 1960s-era living room display and bar scene.
• Projection Mapping - Captivating moments from the Apollo Program come to life with projected footage on the side of the Saturn V rocket.
• First Steps - Apollo astronaut Alan Bean’s mural, entitled First Steps, is an inspiring backdrop to an exhibit that showcases space-flown artifacts
This event is included with daily admission. Please arrive early and head to the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour entrance upon arrival. Bus boarding for the Apollo/ Saturn V Center will begin at 9:30 AM, and the event’s capacity will be on a first come, first served basis.

Safer Fun In The Sun Sun protection is important for Florida’s children all year long, but especially in summer. Try to avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is strongest, and make sunscreen a daily habit. All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg offers these tips for protecting children from the sun: Waterproof, water-resistant, and sweatresistant sunscreens… there are a lot of choices! These products are good for active kids, but the names can be misleading. Even “waterproof” sunscreens should be reapplied every two hours, especially when children are playing in the water.
The A-B-Cs of SPF & UV Sunlight is made up of two kinds of ultraviolet (UV) radiation: UVA and UVB. Both types damage skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Even children and teens can get some types of skin cancer. Until recently, sunscreens only protected against UVB rays, but there are new products that may also block UVA rays. Sunscreens are ranked with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15--SPF 30 is recommended. How to Use Sunscreen Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. Apply to all exposed skin (except eyelids), including ears and feet. Be extra careful around and just above the eyes. “Stick” preparations may be easier for this area. A hat with a wide brim provides added protection. An SPF 30 can turn into an SPF 3 if you don’t apply enough sunscreen! Older children and adults should use two ounces of sunscreen for each application—that’s ¼ of an 8-ounce bottle).

Wise Words When Your Children Talk Back Nothing makes correcting a child more frustrating than to have him constantly “back talk” or offer a response or defense to everything you say. It’s doubly upsetting if those retorts are disrespectful. So how do you nip this back talk habit? Much of it relies on laying a foundation of respect. Next, move on to the nitty-gritty of targeting the talking back and taking it on. You don’t have to do it alone. We’re in it with you. And while you don’t want to engage in a lot of back-and-forth verbal volleyball with your child, sometimes the right response can calm the waters and defuse common kid tactics to distract from the real issues.
“That’s not fair!” Children like to believe that the only just way for them to be treated is exactly the same as their siblings or friends. But fair isn’t the same as equal or identical.
A wise parent will measure his words carefully when responding to back talk so that parental authority doesn’t dissolve in a verbal tug of war. The last thing you want to do is engage in a lengthy back-and-forth with your child. This only encourages future arguments about rules and boundaries. But on those occasions when you think your child’s backtalk deserves or needs a response, here are some wise words when your children talk back.
Response: “Well, what other parents choose to do may not be right for us. In our family we believe _____________, so that’s how we’ll decide about this too.”
Response: “I will always try to treat you and your brothers and sisters fairly, but I won’t always treat you the same. That’s because you are each different, just like everyone in the world is different from each other.” “Everyone else gets to do it!” Kids like to pressure parents by comparing them to other parents.
“You don’t trust me.” Older kids will try to guilt parents who set boundaries by acting as if the im-
plied lack of trust is damaging your parent-child relationship. Response: “Even if I trust you, which I do, my main job is to keep you safe. So in this case, it’s not about trusting you, it’s about keeping you safe and/or looking out for what you need. “I don’t have to do what you say.” This is one of those cases of back talk that shows defiance and disrespect and should be dealt with accordingly. Response: Parent looks behind him and says, “Who are you talking to? I know you’re not talking to me.” That’s the give them a chance to correct their attitude approach. You can follow it with, “Okay, maybe you want to try that again.” If they don’t get the point and keep talking back, take a stronger approach, “I am your parent, and whether you think that I’m right or wrong, you
owe me respect and obedience. Because your attitude and words are showing neither, your consequence is…” (Note: This only has value if the consequence has an impact and you have the backbone to enforce it.) “Mumble, mumble.” This is the ploy of the child who wants to get in the last word. You’ve said your piece, but they won’t let it drop. They either keep pushing or they mumble under their breath. Either way, it’s a power play. Response: “Okay, I’ve listened to what you have to say and I’ve asked you to stop talking.” From there, you can either say, “If you want to get to __________, you will not say another word.” Or, “If you say another word about this, I will _____________.”

TALK TO YOUR TEENS ABOUT MARRIAGE TO PREPARE THEM FOR ADULTHOOD
Q: My son and daughter are 15 and 13, respectively. I’m trying to cover all the bases in helping them prepare for adulthood. Is there something you’ve seen parents neglect or just forget to talk about? Jim: Parents rightfully want teenagers to learn important life lessons—financial management, work ethic, etc. And those are good things to teach to our children. But there’s another topic moms and dads often overlook: marriage! You’re probably thinking: “Talk to my teenagers about marriage? I’m just hoping to get them through the dating years in one piece!” But conversations about marriage aren’t something that should be ignored in the teen years. Marriage is an enormous commitment, and yet parents generally do very little to prepare their kids for it. That’s why I think it’s best to weave healthy principles about marriage throughout a child’s upbringing. Boys should be taught from a young age what it means to serve their wife, to honor her and to treat her with dignity. Girls should learn the value of mother-

Values like these can even have a positive impact on single young adults. They’ll be better equipped to have a healthy dating life. And they’ll also be more likely to wait for the right relationship, instead of jumping into the first thing that comes along. So don’t wait until your kids are deeply entrenched in a romantic relationship before talking to them about marriage. Proactively teach them how to have a healthy relationship, so they’ll be able to make a good decision when it counts. Q: How can we help our 2-year-old adjust to having a new baby sister? He whines and cries for Mommy (me) all the time, and lately he’s been misbehaving as a way of getting our attention. Is this normal? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Yes, it’s perfectly normal. Your older child has been the center of attention in your family. Now a screaming, crying little stranger has suddenly appeared on the scene and upset his world, demanding huge amounts of your time and attention. It’s only natural that he feels a bit put out. There are several strategies you can adopt to smooth the transition. First, it’s important for Dad to take an active, involved role with both toddler and baby. When you’re nursing or tending to the infant, your

husband could engage the older child in some kind of fun one-on-one activity, giving the boy his full attention. On the other side of the coin, Dad could give you frequent breaks by changing, rocking, burping and generally helping care for the baby whenever possible. That will enable you to also spend some special time with your toddler each day. Many parents notice some regressive behavior on the part of their toddler after a new baby arrives. For example, the child may try to climb into the infant’s crib or suddenly forget his potty training skills. One way to counter this is to affirm your toddler for his “grown-up” capabilities and to point out some of the advantages of being older. You might say something

Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: Simply put, marriage is not primarily about “finding the right person.” It’s about being the right person.
Second, shake off the lingering influences of premarital romance and learn to appreciate your spouse for who he or she really is. During courtship, both spouses-to-be tend to get excited about this wonderful new relationship. As a result, they fill in any perceived gaps in their loved one’s personality. Accept that you’re now married to a person who has flaws— just like you have.
You can begin by working on yourself. If you entered marriage with the expectation that you were going to find happiness in your mate, you were probably disappointed. The range of emotions that we normally experience as unmarried individuals has the potential to become even wider in marriage. If you and your spouse were unhappy and unfulfilled as singles, those feelings of discontentment can sink even lower after you tie the knot. But if you each have a sense of deep individual meaning and purpose, and a desire to

There’s certainly nothing wrong with those things. But true, lasting love goes much deeper than that. Author Gary Thomas has noted that it’s easy to love someone because they’re always doing nice things for you and making you feel good about yourself. Anyone can love somebody like that.
LASTING LOVE IS MORE THAN A LIST OF REASONS
Real life is different, though. Even the best spouse is going to let you down from time to time. All of us tend to be self-absorbed, forgetful and even meanQ: Usually when I want to express my love for spirited. It’s true of you and me, and it’s true of the my husband verbally or in writing, I list reasons people we’re married to. But if you can love a spouse why he means so much to me: He’s a good dad, who disappoints you, you aren’t loving them because provides for our family, etc. But he doesn’t seem of anything—you’re loving them anyway. to appreciate those compliments like he used to. Am I missing something? Will a woman love her husband who doesn’t express appreciation for the sacrifices she makes? Who takes Greg Smalley, Vice President, Family Ministries: her for granted? Can a man love a wife who isn’t Most of us, when asked to make a list of the reasons nearly as kind to him as he is to her? We all want why we love our spouse, would probably start with to be loved anyway, in spite of our own faults, so “because”: I love my wife because she’s good to shouldn’t we treat the person closest to us the way we me… because she’s kind… because she’s consider- want to be treated? ate… because she’s romantic.
One key to a healthy marriage is to get to the point where you and your spouse can say to each other, “I love you because… and I love you anyway.” If you can get that balance right, your marriage likely has what it takes to go the distance.

The Parenting Idea I Stole from My Wife
by Mark W. Merrill, www.markmerrill.com
My wife Susan is very creative in all aspects of her life, and that includes parenting our five children. There are times when I see her doing something creative with our kids and think, “I want to be a part of that!” Many years ago, I watched Susan and our daughter Megan start trading a writing journal back and forth. After this went on for a few weeks, I noticed them laughing and talking more together. Pretty soon, Susan had these journals going with all of the kids. I felt left out of the fun and bonding so I took her idea and started journaling back and forth with our kids too! Of course, she didn’t mind, and maybe it was her plan all along to make it look so fun that I would practically beg to be a part of it, instead of telling me that I should do it. Either way, those journals strengthened my relationship with my children. I’d write a question or a fill-in-the-blank sentence and lay the journal on my child’s pillow. They would write a response and put it back in my room. Sometimes, they would even draw a picture or write much more than the question asked. I learned so much about my children from those journals—what they really thought, the joys they were experiencing, and the things that frightened them or concerned them.
