Summer may be gone but the magic of the Gulf Islands continues with the turn of the seasons, offering both the bustle of festive events and the peace of quiet contemplation. Witnessing the Christmas season unfold in the islands is a charming experience that will warm the hearts of even the most cynical citydwellers. Ferry passengers arriving at Salt Spring’s Fulford Harbour or Galiano’s Sturdies Bay at night pull in to villages of historic buildings and massive trees all decked out in lights. With no other ambient light masking the displays, the cheery strings of coloured bulbs truly bring home the reason why light is celebrated across so many cultures at this time of year. Mayne Island’s Parade of Lights is set for Dec. 8, where wheeled conveyances of all types get decorated with Christmas finery and parade up Fernhill Road for judging. Small harbours are particularly magical with decorated boats — all ready to welcome Santa and his crew when they arrive by the Lions’ ship to visit each of the islands in turn on Dec. 15. The holiday season boasts a

busy calendar of events, with craft fairs featuring locally produced artisan wares, food, wine and other delectables. Every island has its own community traditions, many of which date back to the pioneering decades, such as Saturna’s Candlelight Dinner at the community hall. All are happy to welcome family members and other visitors who wish to participate. New Year’s Eve often brings special concerts and parties. The annual lantern festival around Pender Island’s Magic Lake is something everyone should experience at least once. When January rolls around, the quiet tends to set in, making it the perfect time to settle in with a good book and a fire, or to book some self-care treatments at a local spa. For outdoors lovers, the islands’ usually mild winters mean the new year is also a great time to enjoy hikes and nature walks without the crowds. Winter can be the best time to spot shorebirds and other shy wildlife. Whatever you’re looking for, the Gulf Islands have it. Come and discover them for yourself!
