Molly Black

I believe movement is the key to living a long, happy, healthy and pain-free life. I started my fitness journey back in 2013 by accomplishing my goal of becoming an ACE certified personal trainer. I am passionate about helping clients of all ages Molly Black reach mobility, confidence and health goals in a one-on-one session or a couples training session. Guiding this transformation safely, effectively and most importantly having fun along the way. I continued my education with a keen interest in functional movement which led me to TRX training. I completed two certifications with TRX, functional movement and suspension training. This has given me the tools to create a dynamic and extremely effective training program suitable for all ages and abilities. To understand better the mind - body connection through movement, my studies directed me towards the academy of applied movement neurology. With manual muscle testing you can increase range of motion, muscular engagement and stability. My driving commitment to the improvement of my clients’ quality of life is the most fulfilling part of my job.

Molly also instructs TRX classes! See page 12 for details.

Parc MYA AMBROSE How long have you been training with PARC? I have been working with Shal since she began training for PARC in January of 2019 What made you decide to take up personal training? I chose personal training so that I could be challenged. I am a partially retired Gerontology RN and can continue working because I am keeping myself strong. In addition I am very aware of the consequences of not being fit as a senior. What benefits have you experienced since you began? I find our sessions go quickly. The benefit of working with a trainer is that the program ensures that I am working on endurance, strength and flexibility. Shal ensures my form is correct so I don’t risk an injury. She is also very creative so I don’t get bored. What advice would you give to a community member considering personal training? I feel the two sessions I do every week are a gift to myself. A gift of self-love and an investment in a healthier future. I highly recommend that anyone not sure where to start a personal fitness program try a few personal training sessions. Molly and Shal are very supportive, knowledgeable in their fields and fun to hang out with.

GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD | JANUARY - APRIL 2020

PROFILES AMY HAYSOM How long have you lived on SSI? 11 years. I think that makes me a Salt Springer now, I’ve passed the 10 year mark! What programs do you run with PARC? Family Yoga, and New Moon Floats, Substitute aquafit instructor! What drew you to this field of work? I love movement, and exploring self-awareness through playful curiosity and fun! What are your hobbies? Yoga of course! Dance, singing and playing music. Hiking with my dog and swimming with my daughter. Practicing back flips off the rope swing at the pool! What is your education and training? I have a Sociology and International Relations degree. I worked with the UN in indigenous children’s rights in my 20s and, in the work, realized that local community and culture and exploring self-awareness in that context is the secret to peace and harmony. So I moved to Salt Spring when I turned 30 and started exploring yoga and my inner creative artistic self through the community! What is one thing on your bucket list? Learn how to do a back handspring. Am I too old? Maybe?? So next on the list, learn the trumpet. What do you love about your job? I love working with so many different ages and watching people push their edges and learn to get comfortable in the uncomfortable. That’s how we grow! Kids will often go home and tell their parents they love yoga and then the family starts to practice together, that’s a gift!

PROGRAMS

Bench Donation Program The Partners with PARC program enables the community and PARC to work together to provide facilities, programs and parkland which enrich our community. One way you can become a partner with PARC is by gifting a park bench, with commemorative plaque, to be placed in a scenic area of a park. Your donation to the Partners with PARC program may have tax advantages for you, your business or your organization. The Capital Regional District will issue a “Letter of Acknowledgement” for each donation, suitable for tax purposes. Cost of the bench, plaque, cement base, installation, and maintenance for 10 years is $2,500. For additional information or to purchase a memorial bench please contact the Salt Spring Island CRD Administration office at 108-121 McPhillips Avenue or email saltspring@crd.bc.ca . These gifts benefit our community and become your legacy to the future of Salt Spring Island.

parc’s trail system In 2019, PARC’s trail crew has focused on major repair and upgrades on existing trails such as Mouat Park.

Pick up the latest version of PARC’s brochure, ‘Trails At A Glance’. In addition to updated trail rating information, the guide includes two of our newest trails, Bishop’s Walk and Blackburn, and stunning photos taken by one of PARC’s trail crew, Justin Byron. Hard copies are available at the PARC office and at the Tourist Information Centre, or it can be viewed online at www. crd.bc.ca/ssiparc. PARC’s trail system totals almost 40 km of developed trails that provide residents and visitors with opportunities for physical activities such as walking, running and bird watching, as well as mountain biking and horseback riding where permitted. Get together and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. Additional Island trail networks can be found in Provincial Parks and the Salt Spring Island Conservancy properties.

Adults can find new hobbies Its never to late to try something new

L

eisure time can seem like a luxury for many adults. While it can seem like there’s little time in the day to do more than tend to responsibilities at work and at home, people may have more time to pursue leisure activities than they realize. Leisure time is part and parcel of daily life in Canada, where the average person age 15 and over spent roughly one hour per day engaging in active leisure, which includes activities like drawing, playing an instrument and dancing, and more than two hours per day on passive leisure, such as watching television or reading books.

Finding new hobbies that encourage active participation can make leisure time more memorable. • Think back to your childhood. Hobbies you once enjoyed as a child may have long since been forgotten, but it can be fun to reimmerse yourself in such interests. Adults who loved to play sports as a child can no doubt find adult leagues in their area, while once budding artists might want to dust off their easels and visit a local paint and sip facility. • Reinvent something you’re already doing. Another way to find a new hobby is to consider the things you already do and see if there’s ways to make them better. For example, cooking for a family each night might be made more enjoyable by enrolling in a cooking class, where you can meet fellow foodies while fine-tuning your culinary skills. If you love to read, start a community book club. • Expand your horizons. It’s easy for anyone to say “no” to something new, but especially so for adults accustomed to their routines. But men and women who are willing to try anything are more likely to find something new to be passionate about than those who shy away from the unknown. You don’t have to make a big initial commitment when trying a new hobby, but approach any new ideas or suggestions with an open mind. Finding a new hobby as an adult can be tricky. But approaching activities with an open mind may help people uncover new hobbies they can be passionate about.
