The Importance of a Local Community Newspaper by: Stuart Hambrook In a tightly knit community such as Salt Spring Island, it is imperative that a platform be available to broadcast local news, and advertise community events and businesses. The Driftwood itself is an active small business in our community, catering to the needs of the people of Salt Spring Island, while helping other businesses to succeed locally and even launch them to a larger sphere of influence. It is outstanding that the Driftwood brings our community local island news, alongside news that matters provincially and nationally while keeping in mind the perspective of islanders. Driftwood photographers and reporters are never hard to find circulating the island keeping tabs on what is happening in our community. Every one of my friends could tell you of at least two times they have been in an article or photo in the Driftwood. Our newspaper could not do a better job including stories from, and for, all age groups. This is paramount in a community that is inclusive of its youth and works as a team to raise intelligent and thoughtful young citizens. Personally, I look back fondly to my success in the Christmas Short Story Competition of 2013 and all the times my sports teams have been featured in an article announcing our successes. It keeps a small community connected and proud when a common household line is "Oh, guess who's in the paper this week?" The Driftwood is also an important plat2
class of 2018
form to discuss challenging and controversial ideas and opinions within the community. It is important to stay informed about decisions being made on Salt Spring and around Saanich and the Gulf Islands. The opinion pieces published in the Driftwood keep Salt Springers on their toes about where our island is headed, politically, socially and economically. It keeps community members involved in current events when there is a local paper that distributes these ideas and opinions. This is often how initiatives are born and change can be brought about to improve island life. There are a number of magazines also published by the Driftwood that reach a more specific demographic and cover more detailed corners of the reader's needs, two of which are Aqua and Gulf Islands Real Estate. The latest issue of the bi-monthly publication Gulf Islands Real Estate can always be found sitting on our counter at home. Besides being tremendously beneficial to our island's economy, the magazine has actually helped pique my personal interest in residential design and civil engineering. The Driftwood newspaper has always held a necessary role in bringing our community together and informing us of relevant current events. It has also played a key role in my life and the lives of my peers growing up in a small town. Communities such as ours celebrate victories and mourn losses together and support each other through challenges we may face. Our local newspaper is essential to keeping Salt Spring united and reinforcing the proud sense of identity that goes hand in hand with being a true islander. gulf islands driftwood • wednesday june 20, 2018

R
ana grew up between Galiano Island and Ometepe Island in Nicaragua. For the several months of each year that she was in Nicaragua, Rana took a break from formal schooling and studied at home with her mum. On Galiano, she helped her parents run the Gulf Islands Film and Television School, performing roles from tech support to night nanny. She met teenagers from across Canada and the world, who weren’t always pleased that an 11-yearold was telling them it was bedtime. Rana spent her early school years at Galiano Community School, before attending the MYSEEC program in Grade 5, and then the French Immersion program from Grade 6 and beyond on Salt Spring Island. Over the past eight years, she has spent a lot of hours on the water taxi! When she’s not studying French or Spanish, Rana’s class schedule is full of calculus, chemistry, biology and physics.
wednesday june 8, 2016 • gulf islands driftwood
On weekends, Rana spends two days in Victoria to practise her favourite sport, equestrian vaulting (gymnastics on the back of a cantering horse). On Sundays back on Galiano, she volunteers at RestQ, the local animal rescue centre. This summer she is looking forward to working with the Galiano Children’s Summer Program for her third year, and having time to a read a good book. Having always loved science, Rana has chosen to attend Dalhousie University in the fall of 2019, after taking a gap year to travel and work. She hopes to receive a Bachelor of Science degree through the Integrated Science Program at Dalhousie. Although she is not certain which branch of science she will pursue, Rana is leaning towards a career in medicine. She is hoping that her facility in languages will allow her to travel to help those in need around the globe.
