Paige’s best memory was the Senior Volleyball trip to Hawaii. She names surviving Grade 10 as her top accomplishment and plans to attend Quest University in the fall.
Lael's best memoires include the wide-ranging, philosophical conversations with the diverse group of people at Phoenix. Successfully balancing school with all the other aspects of her life is one of her greatest accomplishments. Lael's future plan is to be content in whatever phase she is in.
Since coming to GISS, Hailey has enjoyed being surrounded by good people. She feels her greatest accomplishment is becoming a positive person. Hailey will spend some time travelling before going to university.
April’s best memories of her time at GISS are Art class, where she had the most fun, and Cafeteria, where she is proud of passing her Food Safe and helping out her group. April will return to GISS next year to do more work experience.

Annika will remember doing cartwheels on the field in the summer with her friends. Her accomplishments include being part of the Writing Group for three years and learning the ankle drop at silks. Annika has set her sights on attending the UVic creative writing program, travelling the world and living in Paris.
Going to Hawaii with the volleyball team is Sam’s best GISS memory. Finishing his Calculus 12 learning log is his greatest accomplishment. Sam plans to attend university and become a doctor.
Being a student in French Immersion and going on the F.I. trip as well as enjoying the field on sunny days are some of Emma’s fond memories of her time at GISS. Emma is most proud of creating an IDS course, being on the Principal’s List for 3 years and attending SHAD. Emma’s plans include going to Quest University, travelling and pursuing her passions.
Starting up the GISS Salad Truck with the Salad Girls and Chef is Callysta’s greatest accomplishment. In the future she plans to travel.

Raven’s best GISS memory is Mrs. Arnold belly dancing while catching jelly beans in her mouth. Her plans for the future are to make money.
Josh’s best memories include sr. boys team bus rides, backstage at ArtSpring, and all of the boys and girls. He is proud of his third place finish at the soccer provincials and his lead role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He plans on making a lot of money, working outside, and continuing to make friends. And of course, soccer will be a part of his life.

Lorence has great memories of his time on the Junior Improv team, the “five star” food at the cafeteria, his friends, and grades 10 and 12. He is proud of finding and exploring his passion for writing and poetry. Lorence plans to take a year off to work and then go to college to develop his skills as a writer.
Grade 10 stands out as Kasea’s best memory of GISS. She is most proud of being captain of the volleyball team. She is bound for Simon Fraser University to earn a Bachelor of Science.

The movie night last fall is one of Luke’s good memories of GISS. He is pleased to have improved his English so much in two years. Luke will come back to GISS next year to complete a few more courses and then plans to continue his studies at a Canadian university..
The French Immersion trip to Quebec and watching sunrises from the lake on rowing mornings are Isabella’s best GISS memories. Graduating from the French Immersion program and being chosen to work as a page in the House of Commons for the 2016/2017 session are her best accomplishments.

Colleran’s classes, acting shows, sunny days on the grass, karate, good friends, music - “What more do you need?” asks Eric. He plans to “Take a year; find the right path.”
Tatiana enjoyed being a part of and seeing the school spirit that people carry every day at GISS. She is very proud of her accomplishments of swimming on the swim team and finishing high school. Tatiana plans to live life to the fullest, pursue further education and explore the world.

Paul’s best memories of his time at GISS include his classes in Art and English as well as travelling to Italy with Mr. Colleran, Mr. Crouse and his friends. He is proud of his involvement in English Advanced Placement.
Jihee has enjoyed her time at GISS, particularly being able to celebrate her birthday on school days. In Korea, her birthday was always during Winter Break. Jihee is very proud of achieving all A’s on her midterm report and the many friendships she has made. Jihee looks forward to finding a part time job and searching out the great food of the world.

Her greatest accomplishment was finishing all her classes a semester early and getting to backpack in Australia for the last half of Grade 12. Among Tristan’s greatest GISS memories are of basketball trips and Work Zone. His accomplishments were playing basketball and “keepin’ it real.” In the future, Tristan plans to educate his mind.
At GISS Daniel had the opportunity to make many new, hopefully lasting friendships, including some with students from other countries. Daniel feels his biggest accomplishment is becoming the person he is today. Daniel’s plans include owning a foreign car dealership and 8 houses in 8 countries (his favourite number is 8).

TONYA DUNFORD Tonya’s greatest memories while at GISS were of playing cards in Math class and drinking apple juice. Completing university courses while still in high school was her greatest accomplishment. She plans to travel the world and become a fully certified hair dresser.

Aaron has great memories of going on trips to Hawaii with the senior volleyball teams and going to Italy in 2016, as well as hosting basketball and volleyball tournaments. He is proud of achieving Principal’s List, captain of the senior volleyball team and Athlete of the Year. His plans include attending UVic to study Engineering and playing volleyball for the U21 team.
Atom has wonderful memories of being an active part of the music community at GISS, building relationships and mentoring younger students. Atom is very proud of being a performer in 11 different GISS and GISPA productions.

Special memories that stand out for Jaymie at GISS are the first days in grades 9 and 12, as well as classes in Pre Calculus 11 and Law 12. Jaymie is very proud to receive a full coverage scholarship to UVic and is excited to begin her History degree in September with a minor in Law.
While at GISS, Katya had great memories of helping friends, being brutally honest with people, and having a second family in her Yearbook classes. Her best accomplishments were being the Yearbook editor in 2016, getting on the Honour Roll, and growing up. She plans to study visual arts and journalism at UVic and travel.

One of the highlights of Ariana’s GISS years was “bro-ing out with John Cameron while taking photos at an ArtSpring rehearsal.” Her main accomplishment was making it 4 years without falling up or down the main stairwell. In the future, she plans to be off in another country taking photos of beautiful things with her eight dogs.
Sid’s best memories are of hanging out with the crew and being on the Honour Roll twice. Although he has not made definitive plans for his future yet, he knows he will enjoy whatever he chooses to do.

Jeremy will remember playing his guitar. He is most proud of completing the ACE-It program and TASK and plans on continuing in the field by attending carpentry school.

While at GISS, Work Zone, Doug Pearson’s gym class, and watching his friends grow into their own individuality were Liam’s best memories. His accomplishments were playing on the school sports teams and making lifetime friendships. His plans for the future are to be able to bench press 315 lbs. and to own lots of dogs.
Devan will remember playing on the basketball team and beach hikes with Mr. Ouhammou’s French class. She lists her accomplishments as winning the Nairn Howe basketball tournament in Grade 11 and passing Physics (with a little help from her friend). The future will see Devan going to university and travelling.

Graduation is both Maddy’s best memory and greatest accomplishment while at GISS. In the future, she plans to study child care at Camosun College and eventually open her own daycare.
Working in the shop, the first day of highschool, and making new friends are some of Jason's best memories. Receiving a 98% in shop and reaching 70 km on a mobility scooter are some of his greatest accomplishments . Jason plans on attending Camosun College to study in the trades.

The senior volleyball Hawaii trip and mini bus trips were Jennifer’s best memories. Her best accomplishment was graduating from GISS. She would like to eventually become an elementary school teacher and travel the world.
Alex’s best memory at GISS was Work Zone. His greatest accomplishment was completing the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue program. In the future, Alex plans to study nautical sciences at BCIT.
taylor HOU Taylor’s best memories are of her teachers and friends who helped her when she had trouble and made her feel welcome in Canada. Her biggest accomplishments were living in another country for two years without her family and graduating here. She plans to study at university in Vancouver and become an excellent interior designer.

Nick will remember going to tournaments with the soccer and basketball teams. He is proud of being part of the soccer team that finished 8th at provincials, and of being accepted into university. Nick will take a gap year before taking up that place at university, probably to study business.
Raven Braid was involved in all of Kate's best GISS memories. Graduating with minimal psychological and physical damage is her greatest accomplishment. Kate's future plans include becoming the next Dan Sparanese and making GISS a better place for future generations.
Daniel’s special memories of his time at GISS include the production of Pinocchio, Mayne Island and making music. He is very proud of receiving the Musician of the Year Award. He plans to take Vancouver by storm!

Kiara plans to get a degree in kinesiology and travel.
Shayce has lasting memories of her involvement with sports at GISS: volleyball in Hawaii, basketball, the Nairn Howe tournament, and soccer trips in the mini-bus. Her accomplishments include being on the Principal’s List, completing French Immersion and being named Athlete of the Year. Shayce plans to travel the world.
Meeting fellow minstrels was a true pleasure of Connor’s! His plan for the future is to pursue happiness.
Chase’s best memories of GISS are poker nights and the boys. His greatest accomplishment was making it to the Mt. Everest base camp. His plans for the future include studying engineering at Queen’s University.

Lyyli’s best memories include the GISPA shows and trips and eating Maja’s vegan delights. Her major accomplishment is the making of good memories while also making the most of her time at high school. She plans on exploring the world with the same passion and eventually making a home for herself.
Having made amazing new friends is Lily’s greatest memory. She feels a great accomplishment in graduating from GISS and leaving her comfort zone and trying new things. Lily’s future plans include travel, attending post secondary, and to continue doing what makes her the happiest.
Riley has special memories of travelling to Quebec and Hawaii in Grade 11 with her classmates. She is most proud of finishing French Immersion and obtaining her bilingual certificate. Riley’s plans include going to university, travelling and living life to the fullest.
Jordon will remember playing volleyball, basketball, fastball and soccer and most especially the senior trip to Hawaii. She is most proud of winning the fastball provincials in 2015. Her future plans include attending Langara College in the field of criminal justice.

Emma remembers sharing laughs with friends during class, lounging on the field at lunch and jumping right off the bus into Cusheon Lake after school. She plans to expand her knowledge through university and travel. Eventually Emma would like to become a nurse and work in developing countries.
Destin will remember his bus trips with senior boys and acting in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He is proud of completing high school with a good attitude and a strong work ethic. He plans on owning and running an athletic sports business with his friend Tomas.

She is proud of her involvement with Global Initiatives, maintaining a strong academic average and completing French Immersion. Alexandra plans to take a gap year before pursuing an engineering and international development career.
Alison plans to go to university and then see where life takes her.
For Maylin, her best GISS memory was during Grade 10 when she celebrated her birthday at school with all her international friends. Among her many accomplishments are learning English, trying volunteer work, and always doing art. She plans to study at university for four years and to do more travelling.

Josh's best memory of GISS is the time he spent in Shop class. His greatest accomplishment was getting good grades for most of high school. Josh plans on having a career in mechanics.
Charlotte’s best memories of GISS are pursuing her passion for dance, spending time with friends and trips to Italy, Ottawa and Quebec. Her main accomplishments are being a part of GISPA, French Immersion and the dance program. Charlotte plans to become a primary teacher and do a bit of travelling.

ALEXANDRA macdonald
G
rowing up on Salt Spring, Alexandra spent much of her childhood exploring the outdoors and participating in gymnastics at Fulford Hall. Having professional artists as parents, she was immersed in the creative process from an early age and continues to work on artistic projects. Alex also had the unique and challenging experience of living with and helping to care for her grandmother - who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease - for six years. Beginning her education at Fernwood Elementary, Alexandra went on to participate in French Immersion during her middle school and high school years, completing the program and receiving her official bilingual diploma. Throughout her time in school, she has fostered a love for math, physics and international development. She hopes to integrate these passions with a determination to contribute to positive global change.

Alex’s humanitarian interests, concern for resolving inequality and developing a more sustainable future have been a driving force in her involvement with many extra-curricular activities. She is a member of the GISS Leadership group, an active participant in both SWOVA’s Youth Team and Pass It On programs and additionally co-chairs the GISS Global Initiatives Club. Alex’s passion for gymnastics kept her active on the competitive team for seven years, and then led her to coaching. After many hours of volunteer coaching, Alex has become a certified level one coach and over the past two years has worked at Salt Spring Gymnastics, coaching the competitive program—a job she loves. In her free time, Alexandra can be found running in the Channel Ridge trails, adventuring with her horse in the outdoors, or spending time with her friends and family.

One of Molly’s best memories of her time at GISS is Core French 10 with Mr. Ouhammou. She is proud of her accomplishment in Marketing with Griff. In the future, she plans to be a really awesome mom, just like her mom.
Nixie’s best memories will always be whenever there were free snacks available in the multipurpose room. Her greatest accomplishment was drawing a picture of a whale. She plans to eat more fruit in the future.
Kai's favorite memory at GISS was participating in his first rowing regatta. He feels graduating is his biggest accomplishment. Kai plans to travel the world after graduation.
Erik’s memories at GISS include rowing, dance, music, travelling to Hawaii for volleyball & to Quebec with his French Immersion class. Accomplishments include completing French Immersion, a 3-month exchange to France, competing on an 18U ‘A’ volleyball team & making the Principal’s List since Grade 6. Erik will take a gap year, travel and then off to university.

Making great friends and being involved in Improv, GISPA and Acting shows are among Hayden's best memories of his GISS years. He says his greatest accomplishment is being on this stage, right now.
Jacob has great memories of spontaneous dance parties in homeroom, debates in English literature and the weeks spent at ArtSpring theatre. Jacob is proud of learning to juggle so many things at once, like sports, classes, arts, etc. Jacob plans to attend Quest University for four years and become a teacher.
Getting her bag stuck in a locker and crying while her friends looked on and took pictures will always stand out as Sophie’s best memory of GISS. Her greatest accomplishment was surviving her first year of school. In the future, Sophie would like to travel and to become a professional dancer.
Shuta has great memories of playing basketball with the boys and making many friends while at GISS. He plans to learn a third language while studying International Issues in University.

Meeting new people from around the world, every class with Mr. Berry, and his varying collection of classic cars are the memories Asaph will carry with him after high school. At GISS he has “learned, loved, grown, and gained the skills I need to make my dreams come true.” In the future, Asaph plans to travel Europe, become an infantry officer and, eventually, a historian.
Jessica’s special memories include performing in shows at ArtSpring and experiencing Italy on a GISS trip with fellow students and teachers. Jessica is very proud of her achievement in being able to give a full commitment to dance while keeping her grades up. Jessica’s future plans include dancing, performing, travelling and teaching.
Kalani’s best memories of GISS include his first day of school and basketball on the Outer Islands. Kalani’s accomplishments include Cadet Camp 2015 and being a member of the basketball team for 3 years. His plans include becoming a firefighter or engineer.

Jet’s best memories of GISS are the little things that he doesn’t really remember. His main accomplishment is a 95 in Spanish (“Thanks Sotes”). He plans to attend university for computer science and possibly program a girlfriend.
Being in shop class with his brother, Liam, is one of Andrew’s best memories. Andrew’s greatest accomplishment was attending provincials for competitive swimming each year of high school. He plans on attending VIU and to let his passions lead him to a career he will enjoy.

Some of Mark’s best school memories include the Europe trip in Grade 11 with Mr. Crouse and Mr. Colleran, homeroom with Mr. Ouhammou and The Phantom Tollbooth. Mark’s accomplishments include being on the Honour Roll every year and never missing the water taxi. Mark plans to take a year off to work and travel followed by attending SFU in 2017 to become a primary teacher.
Sabrina’s best school memories were of the 2015 Europe trip and struggling to create 3D chemical models out of tinker toys in Chem 11. Her greatest accomplishment was mastering technology to adapt her education. In the future, Sabrina plans to study at the University of Victoria and pursue a career in the sciences.
GREGORY STUNDER Gregory’s best GISS memories are of hanging out with friends at lunch and all the good times in shop class. His accomplishments include passing his N test on the first try and passing all the classes he needs to graduate. Gregory will work for a year before heading off to college.

Mr Niazi’s physics, Mr Berry’s english classes and all the strange adventures he has gone through at GISS are a few of Brennan’s best memories. He feels his greatest accomplishments are managing to survive high school and finding friends worth keeping. Brennan plans to see a bit of the world beyond this rock, and is looking forward to his future experiences in life.
Among Leticia’s great memories of GISS are walking in on the first day of Grade 9 and her Law 12 classes. She is most proud of passing provincial exams and being promoted at work. Leticia hopes to sail the world and volunteer in third world countries.
Kelsea’s best memories of GISS include travelling to Ottawa and Quebec City with her French Immersion class. Kelsea is proud of completing the French Immersion program, attaining a bilingual certificate and being on the Principal’s List. Kelsea plans to attend nursing school, do some volunteer work and travel.
Grade 12 Spanish and Grade 11 Caf were among Shaye’s greatest memories. He feels he has fulfilled a great accomplishment by graduating high school. Shaye’s future plans include becoming a wildland firefighter.

Amy’s friends are a large part of her best memories at GISS. Her newfound computer skills are one of Amy’s favourite accomplishments. She plans to keep working on computers in her future.
Travelling to Europe with an amazing group of people and making great friends are some of Olivia’s fondest memories. She is planning on moving to Vancouver to become a certified veterinary assistant.
Kathryn’s memories include going to Hawaii with the volleyball teams and Collombin’s elaborate accents. Her most memorable times at GISS include performing in 7 out of 8 Dance shows as well as participating in WeDay with the Leadership crew and receiving the Law 12 award in Grade 11. She plans on attending UVIC to study Psychology before attending law school.
Odin’s greatest memory at GISS was working with Mr.Duncan in Physics 11. He has enjoyed his time at GISS and plans to move to Vancouver to work and enjoy life.

Thomas’s best memories at GISS include winning the home basketball tournament in his Grade 12 year & poker nights with the boys. He is proud to have completed 2 college courses and made the Honour Roll every semester while playing high level basketball. Attending business school while playing university basketball and starting a sports clothing line with Destin are his plans for the future.
Shane will remember playing ultimate frisbee in the rain, making short films with friends, and the Ottawa and Quebec French Immersion trip. She is proud of being on the Principal’s List every year of high school in the French Immersion program, and medalling provincially with the GISS swim team. Shane will attend VIU in the fall, working toward a nursing career, specializing in perinatal nursing.
Ethan’s fondest memories are of riding his bike at school. He is proud of getting his license on the first try. His future plans include becoming a crane operator and restoring his old truck in his spare time.
Social Studies class and hanging out with friends at lunch are Troy’s best memories at GISS. Being on the Honour Roll every semester was his greatest accomplishment. Troy plans on attending university in the future.

Andrew Krizan Humanitarian Scholarship This award honours a student pursuing post secondary studies in areas of human service with specific emphasis on children with special needs or adults with physical/mental challenges. Apple Festival - Rex Welland Memorial Bursary Created to support students pursuing training in Agriculture or Environmental Science. The vision driving this award is to stimulate an interest in sustainable Agriculture among island youth. Art off the Fence Arts Bursary (not awarded in 2016) Awarded to a deserving Pender Island student who plans to pursue studies in the arts, this bursary is donated by a group of Pender Island artists. Barbara Richards –Gulf Islands Driftwood Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a student who is selected on the basis of an essay describing why the community newspaper is important to the community it serves. The award is named for Barbara Richards, who with husband Frank, published the Driftwood newspaper from 1967 until 1979. A woman of strong principles, she had a profound influence on her family, members of which continue to publish the newspaper today. Blair Rosser Music Award This award is presented to a graduate who demonstrates a love of music.

Canadian Federation of University Women Bursary This award is presented to a female student who has exhibited strength in academic subjects and is accepted into a degree-granting program. Child Honouring Bursary Awarded to a graduating student intending to pursue a career in Early Childhood Education or similar field, working with children under 5 years of age. Clark Little Memorial Bursary (not awarded in 2016) Created by the Little family, in Clark’s memory, this bursary is awarded to a student who has a heart for God. The successful applicant must have been accepted into a Christian organization and be committed to a mission to spread the word of the Lord. Clark Little Book Prize for Poetry In memory of Clark Little who loved to write poetry, this award has been created by Salt Spring Writers and Friends, with the hopes of inspiring young people to continue writing. Country Grocer Bursaries Country Grocer Salt Spring contributes to the future of students in the community and acknowledges those who are making every effort to work their way through post-secondary training. Dogwood District Board Authority Awards (18) This scholarship recognizes excellence in fields other than academics. Dr. James Buchan Memorial Scholarship Dr. Buchan bequeathed in his will, scholarships to support GISS grads who attend Medical School. In addition to those, this award is presented to a member of the graduating class pursuing Sciences at college/university. Eamon Lin MacQueen Memorial Bursary (2 awards) (1) Presented to an individual demonstrating perseverance in overcoming significant life challenges. Galiano Lions Club Bursary This award honours a graduating student who is a permanent resident of Galiano Island pursuing postsecondary education. Gulf Islands Secondary School Solar Scholarship Awarded to a student pursuing postsecondary education in renewable energy or climate change (or related). This includes Apprenticeship programs, a prescribed or diploma course; college or university. Gulf Islands Teachers Association Scholarship and Bursary The Gulf Islands Teachers’ Association gives one scholarship and one bursary to full time students at Gulf Islands Secondary School in order to assist with the costs of post-secondary education. One important criterion for the scholarship is academic proficiency and for the bursary, financial need. Gulf Islands Television Society Scholarship for the Visual Arts Honouring a student who demonstrates a high level of commitment and achievement in their chosen area of the visual arts and who will be pursuing the same at the University or College level, this scholarship is awarded on behalf of the former Gulf Islands Television Society. Harris & Company Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a Law 12 student who excels in their course of study. It is given to a student who expresses an intention to enroll in postsecondary education at a recognized Institute, College or University.

Lambda Foundation Jack Hallam Human Rights Award This award was created through the generosity of one GLOSSI’s (Gays and Lesbians of Salt Spring Island) founding members who made great strides to counteract homophobia in our community. In partnership with the Lambda Foundation in Ottawa, this honours a student who has demonstrated community service in a variety of areas. Mayne Island Lions Fred Greenslade Memorial Award Given to a student who demonstrates both citizenship and scholastic excellence to support their endeavors in post-secondary education. This scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Robert Unger, a dentist who lived and worked on Salt Spring Island for many years. Robin Gibbard Memorial Award for Trades In memory of Robin, this award is granted to a student who is pursuing a career in the trades, particularly with an interest in welding. Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 92) Scholarship This award is presented to a Gulf Islands Secondary School graduate who intends to go on to further education. Preference is given to a close relative of a veteran.
Ruby Alton Memorial Scholarships Awarded to female students who demonstrate significant community involvement and contribution. Salt Spring Conservancy Memorial Scholarship (not awarded in 2016) Given to a student who will be pursuing Environmental Studies or Biology. Student must be involved in volunteer activities relating to environmental issues Salt Spring Island Community Arts Council Bursaries The Arts Council awards two bursaries… one to a student pursuing studies in the field of visual arts and one to a student dedicated to a career in the performing arts. Salt Spring Island Farmers Institute Bursary This award is presented to a student entering an institution of higher learning, preferably in a field relating to agriculture, horticulture, or the sciences. Need, as well as ability, is an important factor. Salt Spring Island Garbage Services Scholarships In recognition of the need for skilled trades-people in our community, this award is given to students pursuing a career in the trades. Steve Thomas Memorial Bursary (S.S.I. Fire & Rescue) Presented to a student pursuing a trade program or apprenticeship. Preference given to a student interested in firefighting and volunteer service. SWOVA (Salt Spring Women Opposed to Violence Association) Awards Honouring two members of the graduation class who exhibit, demonstrate and live by the values as set out in the “Respectful Relationships” program. Travis Guedes Leadership Award Awarded to a student who has demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, integrity, extracurricular achievement, a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
West of the Moon/Perrins Family Scholarship Granted to a student pursuing studies in teacher education (early, middle or secondary). Preference given to students participating in peer tutoring or leadership. Western Communities Foundation Exceptional Achievement Citation/ Bursary Awarded to a student who intends to seek further training or AND who has overcome adversity (mental/physical disability), financial hardship, family issues; and/or who has displayed outstanding community and/or school spirit as an organizer, participant, or volunteer; and/or who has demonstrated inspirational conduct whether an act of heroism or leadership in a crisis.
Unsung Hero Award This award is to recognize and honour a member of the graduating class of GISS who has demonstrated exceptional service to his/her class, the school, and/ or the community without expectation of personal gain, in keeping with the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”.
Wilco Construction Award for Carpentry Granted to a student who has completed Carpentry Level One training while still in high school and intent upon completing the Red Seal Program.
Waterbird Watch Award Awarded to a student who intends to commit themselves to education or action involving wildlife and habitat, ecology, biology, climate change or zoology. Donated by the Salt Spring Island Waterbird Watch Collective.
