co-ed JunIor roller derby gets rollIng on salt sprIng
BY ELIZABETH NOLAN DRIFTWOOD STAFF
Like any team sport, roller derby can help build selfconfidence, teamwork and leadership skills. Strategy can be just as important as athletics, and it fits all sorts of bodies. Island girls and boys ages 10 to 17 are just now getting acquainted with some of the benefits, with a new junior team called The Tempest launched on Salt Spring this fall. While some participants from Galiano Island and others who were training in Duncan have already acquired some of the necessary skills, most geared up for this exciting opportunity in youth recreation for the first time in September. Tempest coach Tammy Miller played for Duncan as Trixie McDinglehopper for three years and now belongs to Salt Spring’s adult team, The Committed. She was working with the Candy Crushers junior team in Duncan when she moved to the island with her two kids last year. Her son and daughter both wanted to be involved.

“Roller derby is so great for meeting all types of body shapes and sizes,” she said. “You need your big strong people and your quick small people.” “I’ve definitely seen at some of the junior bouts, some of the smallest, youngest members are the best players,” Miller agreed. In any case, there is much to learn before a player qualifies as being bout-ready. Skating skills come first, of course, and include learning how to fall safely on one’s knees or full-out, face first. Sudden stops, how to sneak into a tight place and not stop your teammates, and skating backwards and forwards around obstacles are all part of the program. “It really gives them a lot of confidence and perseverance. When we teach them to fall down and get back up, they can apply that to other aspects of their life too,” Richer said. “It makes you tough.” As a school teacher in her day job, she feels that roller derby offers something special for girls, who might not know how to harness their energy and use it effectively. “It’s also an awesome workout,” she added. “It will really get the kids in shape. And it’s indoors so it’s a great winter sport.” Players must reach a certain level of competency, including the number of laps they can skate in a timed session, before they are allowed to move forward and play in games. Standardized benchmark tests are given to ensure this. Although the requisite skills might sound challenging, many players come to roller derby who haven’t been interested in other sports, whether they are junior or adult players. Miller believes some of this might have to do with the creative element, which includes control over their outfit instead of being forced into a uniform, and choosing your own player name/alter ego. “My favourite thing about roller derby is it’s still an alternative sport. It attracts kids who are not so athletic ... It’s really geared toward a certain kind of kid who is not your typical jock,” she said. The Tempest coaches are hoping the junior players will be ready to scrimmage (work together on a strategy on the track) by late fall and have actual bouts with other teams by the spring. There are established junior teams in Comox, Victoria, Duncan and Powell River, as well as Vancouver and Abbotsford. Local fans may get a chance to see The Tempest scrimmage in the afternoon of The Committed’s upcoming bout, which will take place at the GISS gym on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 26. Until then, young people interested in joining can check out Facebook under The Tempest- Saltspring Island Junior Roller Derby. The Tempest practices at Fulford Hall Mondays and Tuesdays after school. ■

alt Springers who like to shake off the day with a few structured dance moves are likely to know Kathy and Ron Weisner. The pair have been active in the island’s square and round dance group as well as by leading country and western dancing. They’ve taught social and line dance ballroom dancing classes and were seen showing off their fabulous swing moves in Hard Times Hit Parade at Fulford Hall three years ago. Kathy Weisner has recently returned to a longtime love for Middle Eastern dance in classes she’s offering at her home studio on North End Road, but a surprising sideline that involves dressing up as a witch has really got her on her feet. And she’s hoping other women will join in. “I would like to make this project as inclusive as possible. It’s open to anyone who is willing to make the effort to learn the choreography,” Weisner said of her witch dance group. “There can be a great deal of power and enjoyment in women dancing together.” The source of Weisner’s new interest began with a video of women dressed up for Walpurgis festivities in the city of Wolfshagen im Harz. With the witches dancing to oddly infectious German dance music, the video is hugely entertaining. “When I saw the witch dance I was really intrigued, and for me the sheer joy of this is they’re just just having a ball.
DRIFT WOOD PUBLISHING
It’s so much fun,” Weisner said. According to an online post in New York Magazine — which helped make the dance video go viral — “Walpurgisnacht, also known as Walpurgis Night, takes place on the night of April 30, and although it’s technically Saint Walpurga’s feast day, it has more to do with pagan traditions along the lines of Beltane and May Day.” In latter times it seems the pagan influence has been somewhat diluted. Similar to Halloween, Walpurgis Night is an excuse to dress up and party, except in this case all the costumes are of witches. Weisner has a long history with dancing and teaching many different forms. She studied ballet and character dance as a child, and won medals and a trophy in Scottish Highland dance. Her expertise in new forms continued as she completed a degree in education at UBC in the 1960s. After the Weisners moved to Ontario, she trained with members of the Egyptian Folkloric Dance Troupe and taught and performed Middle Eastern dance among other related activities. Weisner’s interest in witch dance does not involve pagan traditions, nor is she trying to comment on that history in any way. She’s strictly interested in the costuming and choreography arranged by one particular group of modern German women and the sheer joy it produces in combination with the dance song it’s set to. “I honestly think it’s just supposed to be fun. I think someone just heard that piece of music and thought ‘Hang on, let’s do this,’” she said.
“What’s nice about what they’ve done is you don’t have to look like the latest starlet. You can just do your own thing and enjoy it.” In fact, close examination of the source video led Weisner to realize the choreography has roots in traditional belly dance, which is supported by the fact that several woman can be seen wearing belts of coins. She was struck by the similarity of some of the dance moves in the video to Saidi cane dance, in particular. This Egyptian folk dance uses a cane or a stick, which is easily replaced with a stiff broom for the witch dance upgrade. That and the simple nature of the choreography — there are just six moves repeated — have made it easy for Weisner to reproduce as a first step toward a truly Salt Spring-centred witch dance. As Weisner states, “I would prefer not to just replicate the original.” She has adapted the moves seen in the German video to make them more defined, and has tried out other, slower songs to help group members practise the moves. (The ‘50s hit Little Bitty Pretty One works surprisingly well.) Right now the core group has only four members, but Weisner hopes others will come out for the just-for-fun Sunday afternoon sessions. Performing for the community might be a possibility some day, but she said some participants are not interested in that aspect. For more information on how to join Weisner’s witch dance or Middle Eastern dance groups, call 250-537-5058. There is also a Witch Dance Salt Spring Facebook page. ■

he BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is reminding British Columbians to take precautions, including cleaning your hands regularly and staying home when ill, to protect yourself and others from respiratory viruses that typically circulate at this time of year. The reminder comes after BCCDC’s Public Health Laboratory detected several cases of Enterovirus D-68 (EV-D68) in children since mid-August. These are the first laboratory-confirmed cases in B.C. since 2014. “As of Sept. 14, 2016, eight children, including six under the age of two, have had confirmed EV-D68 infections,” said Dr. Mel Krajden, the medical director of the Public Health Laboratory. EV-D68 is a virus that causes mild to severe respiratory illness. Most people with enterovirus infections have only mild, cold-like symptoms or no symptoms at all. More severe cases can include neurological complications such as muscle weakness or paralysis. People with asthma and other lung conditions are more susceptible to more serious complications. “The numbers are low so far, but we can expect more infections to occur through the fall and early winter period,” said Dr. Danuta Skowronski, epidemiologist with the BCCDC. “That is when EV-D68 and other more common cold viruses tend to circulate.” The recent cases of EV-D68 are unrelated to each other and were identified in different regions of the province. At least half of the cases to date have required hospitalization and one included neurological illness characterized by arm paralysis, a feature that was also noted during the last peak in EV-D68 cases during the fall of 2014. “This is the time of year when we see respiratory viruses that cause colds and coughs,” said Deputy Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. “This year we’re seeing EV-D68 again as well, and while most affected people will have only mild illness, for those with asthma it can be more serious. Prompt medical care is important for those who experience difficulty breathing.”

Unlike influenza, for which there is a vaccine available later in the fall when influenza season hits, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for cold viruses or EV-D68. Some basic measures can help reduce the risk of illness caused by respiratory viruses. Recommendations to reduce risk from seasonal respiratory viruses: · Wash hands frequently with plain soap and water for 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. · Stay at home if ill with new respiratory symptoms like cough, sore throat or fever. · Cough into elbow sleeve rather than hands. · Avoid sharing cups and utensils. · Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. · Get the influenza vaccine when available in November to prevent influenza illness. · Seek prompt medical care if experiencing difficulty breathing, particularly if there is a history of asthma or other lung condition.
About EV-D68 · EV-D68 is a respiratory virus that has been around for many years, but has previously been an uncommon cause of enteroviral infection. · In most people, enterovirus infections are associated with only mild, common cold-like symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and sneezing, or no symptoms at all. · Transmission occurs through respiratory secretions and close contact with infected people; however, as with other enteroviruses, EV-D68 may also be spread by fecal-oral transmission. · Severe outcomes of EV-D68 such as neurological complications (muscle weakness or paralysis) have been noted previously and people with asthma or other lung conditions may experience difficulty breathing. Prompt medical care should be sought in the event these symptoms occur. In rare cases, severe outcomes have included death. · From August to October 2014, there were about 220 confirmed cases in
B.C., with about 140 hospitalizations reported. There were three deaths. Several other provinces and US states also experienced outbreaks. Contributed by the Provincial Health Services Authority. hether it’s a trip deep into the Musgrave wilderness in search of abandoned mines, an adventure-filled mystery hike or a ramble to Chemainus Lake, Salt Spring’s trail and Nature Club has an ambulatory adventure waiting for anyone.
Consider Linda Quir ing. When she joined the club about 35 years ago, Quiring considered herself a city-bred office worker more suited to a rush-hour commute than communing with nature. “I just wasn’t an outdoor type whatsoever,” she said. An acquaintance encouraged Quiring to join one of the group’s regular weekly walks, and it wasn’t long before she found herself huffing and puffing her way up the island’s highest peaks, discovering secret waterfalls, exploring pioneer-era homesteads and learning more about Salt Spring’s natural wonders. >

“It gives another opportunity for exploration, leadership and sociability.” — Betty Ball Member, SSI Trail and Nature Club
In those days, she said, the club’s membership was considerably older than it is today, but the club’s elders didn’t lack for enthusiasm, experience or eccentricity. “Eighty-five-year-olds were running up Mount Tuam,” Quiring recalled. “Honestly, it was such an adventure.” When they weren’t hiking on Salt Spring or Vancouver Island, members were exploring Machu Picchu, bagging summits in the Rocky Mountains or trekking in the Himalayas. The club’s founder, the late Mary Sylvander, even travelled to K2, the world’s secondhighest peak, in Pakistan’s daunting Karakoram range. Quiring was elected president of the Trail and Nature Club in early 2016, and it’s unlikely many islanders have tallied more hiking miles and local knowledge than her when it comes to the island’s trails and backcountry highlights.

“It’s not just hiking, it’s about history, and we get access to places where you normally couldn’t go,” she said. Club members lead hikes, walks and rambles on Salt Spring and beyond most Tuesdays between September and June. Hikers explore some of the island’s hidden treasures and high peaks, while walkers tend to stick to moderate trail walking. Ramblers focus on shorter trips to well-trodden locales like Blackburn Meadows, Burgoyne Bay or Vancouver Island’s Chemainus Lake. Betty Ball, who joined the club a few years after it began in the early 1970s, kicked off the 2016-17 rambling season in September with a trip through Duck Creek Park and a subsequent lunch at Vesuvius Beach. “We do tend to prefer the comfort of a log rather than to spread out on the grass, because we might not get up,” said the 92-year-old. “We’re really moving either up or down the scale.”

Ball and her husband Bob joined up after moving to the island from Victoria, where the couple was active in the city’s outdoor club. She’s enjoyed participating in and leading trips with the Trail and Nature Club because it offers members the chance to venture beyond island suburbia, catch a glimpse of the re g i o n’s n a t u ra l beauty and keep fit in the process. Over the decades she’s seen the club grow from a group of 40 outdoor enthusiasts to upwards of 200 members. The g r o u p’s c u r re n t membership is nearly 175 people. The club hosts regular slide show presentations, workshops and picnics spaced throughout the year. In 2015, the organization
Finding Your Pace Hikers - Generally long and strenuous outings with a bit of altitude gain along the way. - Require sturdy hiking boots and good fitness level. Walkers - Move at a relaxed pace, and take time to smell the roses and catch their breath along the way. - Require adequate walking footwear. - Try to avoid steep climbs and generally cover eight kilometres or less. Ramblers - Enjoy walking without pressure and take frequent breaks to take pictures and examine plants, fossils and other curiosities along the path. - Welcome members of any fitness level. - Sometimes visit local restaurants.
hosted workshops and excursions for more than 200 participants who attended the BC Nature conference. Members are also very active with conservation projects on land and sea, including initiatives like the island’s purple martin breeding program, shoreline monitoring projects, annual C h r i s t m a s bird count and invasive-species removal. “It gives another opportunity for exploration, leadership and sociability. Those are all factors,” Ball said. For more information about the group’s events and membership, including links to the club’s seasonal newsletter, visit saltspringtnc.ca. ■

aPPs mOre eFFecTive apps need People FiTness WHen THeY are PersOnaliZed When fitness apps include personal touches such as individualized goals and contact with a “real live trainer,” users tend to exercise more consistently, a UBC study concludes. Mary Jung, an assistant professor in UBC Okanagan’s School of Health and Exercise Sciences, recently completed an eight-week study that examined the effectiveness of fitness apps. “More than ever before, mobile apps provide an opportunity to provide real-time feedback and support to the public and specialized health populations,” says Jung. “In order for app users to reach their full potential, we need to ensure that they stay engaged and are provided with the best support.” In her study, Jung worked with a fitness app company to incorporate goal setting, personalized feedback and opportunities for self-monitoring
and self-evaluation — all key elements of health behaviour change. Activity levels were compared between those who had use of the app compared to those who did not. Jung found that not only did the test subjects use the app for the duration of the study, they exercised more. This is in comparison to the group that did not use the app and who showed no change in their exercise bouts. “There are more than 150,000 mobile fitness apps that are designed to get people moving, yet few Canadians a re a c t u a l l y m e e t i n g Ca n a d a’s physical activity guidelines,” says Jung. “Technology, such as apps, has the potential to assist in improving physical activity levels, but it must be based on sound health behaviour change evidence for this to work.” According to Statistics Canada, about seven per cent of Canadian children
are meeting activity guidelines that call for 60 minutes a day of moderate-tovigorous exercise. For adults, who are recommended to undertake at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise each week, that rate is 15 per cent. Jung’s study — the first of its kind to combine psychology and technology to encourage people to exercise more — was recently published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. The research was funded by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. ■

It puts people at risk for serious correlated illnesses like type-2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancers and reduced psychological well-being. As such, in 2015, the Canadian Medical Association officially recognized obesity as a chronic disease requiring treatment and prevention efforts. What’s more, research has identified a number of obesity risk factors at play, including genetics, physical activity, diet, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, immigration and environmental factors. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all explanation as to why some people live with chronic weight management issues while others don’t. With all the existing research and information on the disease, obesity continues to be stigmatized in Canada. According to a Leger survey, 86 per cent of Canadians believe that obesity is a result of personal choices related to physical activity and food intake. The survey also found that 55 per cent of Canadians believe that people living with obesity lack self-discipline. “People living with obesity are highly stigmatized in our society and are
known to suffer from inequalities in employment, education and health care, often as a direct result of weight discrimination,” says Brad Hussey, communications director for the Canadian Obesity Network. “We should be accepting body diversity rather than alienating so many Canadians because of their medical condition.” Blame, fat-shaming and labelling are not effective ways to help the 6.5 million Canadian adults living with obesity. Weight bias can lead to serious psychological consequences like depression, anxiety, low selfesteem, poor body judgement and suicidal tendencies. A collective effort is needed to address obesity as a chronic medical condition, instead of judging people

living with it. This starts with: • Promoting physical and psychological health, as opposed to extreme weight loss or dieting; • Removing judgement and understanding that a person’s weight does not define them; • Challenging weight bias and stigma, and remembering that there are factors at play beyond diet, exercise and self-discipline; and • Using people first language: Adam has obesity. NOT, Adam is obese. If you’re living with obesity, contact your doctor to discuss an individual treatment plan that offers realistic and sustainable strategies to ensure successful chronic weight loss and management. ■ www.newscanada.com OCTOBER 5, 2016 l health and wellness
