into the role of health provider came about after her own health crisis 15 years ago. The turnaround that resulted was due to functional medicine and the nutrient-rich ancestral diet she now recommends to clients. Together, these restored her health and gave her a new understanding of what constitutes medicine — and what is behind the current epidemic in autoimmune and inflammation-related disorders. Functional medicine seeks to understand the root cause of disease. Fundamental to this approach is the understanding that “most modern disease is caused by a mismatch between our genetics and lifestyle, including our diet. In Wood’s words, it’s “a deeper level of health care . . . investigative, preventative and holistic.” Wood empowers people to take back their health. She teaches classes and works with individuals. Ideally, patients enroll in a three to six-month-long health program to focus on gut or hormone health. The latter program focuses on the HPA-Axis, commonly known as adrenal fatigue. Both programs — Restore Your Gut, and Balance Your Stress Response and Hormones — address the roots of chronic conditions such as insomnia, fatigue and brain fog. The goal: “To recover your health in a way that is lasting so you can live fully.” Wood focuses on women’s health, including adrenal, thyroid and digestive issues. She uses the best lab testing available for cortisol, food reactions, parasites and methylation. People who are engaged in their health, she says, are the people who are drawn to functional medicine. Wood says that people often need support beyond what conventional medicine can offer, especially when they want to optimize their health. >>

White Swan Holistic Health Candace Cole MD The consultation process begins with booking online. Once in the system, patients then complete a series of health questionnaires through a secure online portal. Wood works around the globe, meeting with patients in person, and through video conference or phone. Based on your intake, lab tests are ordered, along with diet and lifestyle recommendations. Handouts and other resources are also provided. Once lab results are in, botanicals and nutraceuticals are recommended. Some tests are covered by MSP and some are not. Visit amberwoodhealth.ca to access free articles that debunk health myths and provide current, evidence-based research on nutrient density, stress hormones, gut health, thyroid health and other conditions and what you can do on your own. Sign up to receive health tips or take the baseline course. Wood recommends this anti-inflammatory, ancestral diet as a starting place for most patients. I’ve been aware for some time that I’ve been standing on a health plateau — functioning, in that I’ve been able to work again after 20 years out of the workforce due to health problems — but my choices have been limited on a daily basis by ongoing environmental sensitivities and unresolved blood sugar issues. It’s not an exaggeration to say I organize my life around my health challenges — and that was before the onset of intestinal problems. Recovery was the focus of my life for so long and the improvement in my quality of life once I reached the stage of functional recovery so substantial, I lost motivation to look for ways to close the gap between “good enough” health and vibrant good health with its promise of a life without limitations. I’m at the beginning of my journey with Wood. This time, I’m going for thriving. Wood can be reached at 1-855-262-3774. ■

the end, wasn’t beyond me. But, despite these efforts, I continued to struggle with my weight, got winded walking up the hill to my house and I never felt truly fit. I would have periods of determination, printing up the “latest fitness plan” that would be taped to the fridge and dutifully checked off. But something always derailed my efforts: a holiday, an illness, a period of stress and, months later, when I finally noticed the half-filled plan still taped to the fridge, I would wonder what happened to make me stop. My tale begins in the spring of 2016. I was doing my usual walking around the neighbourhood and I had read that occasionally running for a short distance would get the heart rate up and increase the cardio benefits of the walk. I would do this randomly, choosing a target like a telephone pole to run to and then continue my >>

walk. My daughter came for a visit and she told me that she was doing a walk/run program called Couch to 5K (C25K) with her partner and they were really enjoying it. C25K is a nine-week program where you alternate walking and running in a very graduated approach, slowly increasing the minutes of running over the weeks until you reach 30 minutes. I thought it sounded fun and downloaded the program. I taped it to my fridge and started on Week 1, Day 1. The program begins with a five-minute warm-up walk and then you run/jog for 60 seconds and then walk for 90 seconds. You do eight repetitions of this and then a warm-down walk. Week 2 has you run/ jogging for 90 seconds with a two-minute walk, and by Week 4 you are run/jogging for five minutes. And on it goes . . . by Week 5, you move from eight minutes on Day 2 to 20 minutes on Day 3. By Week 8 you are up to 28 minutes and then finally 30 minutes on the last day of Week 9. Since I had been regularly walking, I was shocked at how difficult I initially found this program. Luckily, I kept my sense of humour. I was watching the Walking Dead at the time and I imagined that in my running sessions I resembled a zombie, gasping, choking, purple faced, hauling my leg behind me. Just maintaining a very slow run for 90 seconds was incredibly hard. But, for some reason, this time I kept going. It took me many months to get through the program. I decided that it didn’t matter if I stayed on one week for more than one week and if life got in the way, I would just pick up where I left off and keep going. Every time I moved to a new week, I was convinced that I would never be able to do it. Run for 12 straight minutes? Impossible. I would even lie awake the night before and worry about it, like it was a performance. I knew this was silly, because I could simply stop and walk if I got tired and nobody besides me even knew or cared that I was doing the C25K! But, my feelings and fears illogically remained, and getting through each stage became incredibly important to me. Then a rather amazing thing started to happen. I could do the longer sessions. If I missed a few weeks, I could pick up where I left off and I was okay. And every time that I was convinced the distance would be too long to run, whether five or eight or 12 or 20 minutes, it turned out that I was wrong. I could run it. I finished C25K last September and it felt amazing. What next? I decided to keep pushing and see what I could do. I live at the top of a very steep hill, challenging even to walk, and I decided to see if I could build up the strength to run it. I timed a fairly easy 3K run that worked its way to the bottom of the hill and my challenge was to see if I could keep running up the hill towards home. The first time, I went about 10 steps before my legs gave out and I doubled over, gasping for air. >>
As the weeks went on, I got to the first driveway. . . then the second driveway . . . then the curve in the road. Just before Christmas, I made it to the mailbox, still gasping and, finally, in the New Year, all the way to my driveway, legs strong and not out of breath. Who was this person? Apart from actually being able to run up the hill that I had wheezed over for the last 20 years, where was this persistence coming from? I can only guess that the systematic approach of the C25K gave me enough time and eventually strength to push through and finally experience success. This small success ignited something inside that I had kept hidden. I remembered that my younger self had loved running and I discovered that it is incredibly empowering to feel strong. I took my new legs and cardio to the track and ran 14 laps without having to stop, a little over 6K.
I signed up for a 5K trail race in Edmonton on March 12 and ran it in -16 C weather with my best time ever. Now I am working towards a “baby ultra” trail run with a combination of running and walking for 25K. I can run for almost two hours now, if I pop in a bit of walking here and there. I’m not fast by any measure, but that’s not important to me. I choose a route, lace up my shoes, get outside and I keep going, aiming to add a little more distance every week. The C25K program really worked for me. My clothes fit better, I feel strong now when I go about my day and I can’t wait to push to the next level. I still lie awake the night before my long runs, worried and excited about how it will go. I prioritize my fitness sessions over everything else because I finally know the PHOTO COURTESY DAWN HAGE incredible benefits to every Participation medal from the St. Patrick’s Day Trail aspect of my life. And I’m having Run Dawn Hage entered in the Edmonton area this a blast! ■ year.

Choose organic for your health Our skin is a sensitive organ that loves to absorb. Its exposure to certain chemicals can lead to many health concerns, which more and more studies are starting to conclude. For example, aldicarb, which can be dangerous if absorbed through the skin, is still cotton’s second-best selling insecticide in 25 countries. Imagine its effect on us, let alone on babies whose skin is especially thin and porous, making them even more vulnerable. Carefully choosing organic means less exposure to harmful chemicals through your skin, and what’s more, people with chemical sensitivities rarely have any side effects from using organic fabrics. What we breathe and touch can affect us just as much as what we eat. We believe the bedroom should be a haven;

Juice Yourself To Health
Food as medicine and fuel
I
magine, for a moment, yourself with greater health. What do you look like? Stable energy and a healthy body weight? Are you resilient against sickness and have clear skin? Do you have strength, flexibility and balance? Can you imagine yourself with a quality of radiance, a state of high vibration that resonates outward? When we give reverence to our food and treat it as our medicine and our fuel, not just as a way to satiate our tasted buds, health begins to change. Symptoms go away. The body heals and begins to function at a higher level. Drinking living juices, both as a regular part of the diet and in high doses during juice cleanses, is an effective way to improve your health. It’s such a simple thing to do — juice yourself to health. Begin with only organic and non-GMO fruits and vegetables, and use a cold-pressed juicer. Generally, you want a higher percentage of vegetables than fruits, to keep the sugar levels down. Apples, pears and watermelon are great fruits to combine with carrots, cucumber, celery, beets, greens etc. Adding in herbs like mint or parsley creates unique flavour elements. Detoxification: Going on a juice cleanse is a safe and easy way to “lighten the load” and reduce toxins from our bodies. When we fast from food and consume only organic, living juices (and water), we switch into a “detox mode” where our bodies take the energy normally used for digestion and put it towards clearing out the clutter. The juices are loaded with enzymes, vitamins and minerals, as well as being highly alkaline to the body’s pH. The nourishment
of the juices goes straight to healing the body, and releasing toxins that have been stored in fat cells. Juice Cleanses: For a first-time cleanse, try one to three days of drinking seven juices per day and as much water as you want. After having done a few short cleanses, you may be ready to try one week. Let go of the “no pain - no gain” attitude. Be gentle. Juicing is about loving yourself and honouring your body. Maintenance: After a higher level of health has been reached through a series of cleanses, continuing to drink two juices per day keeps you functioning at peak performance and radiating a healthy glow. Visit Glow Juicery in Duncan to find delicious cold-pressed juices and to get all the information you need to get started on a juice cleanse. ■

Medication return is so important. Incorrectly disposed medication can affect the health of marine wildlife, but it also can affect the health of humans in direct and indirect ways. The Capital Regional District has launched a new medications return awareness campaign to promote the proper disposal of medications at pharmacies and to prevent medications from reaching our natural environment. “When medication goes down the drain, it eventually ends up in the ocean, where it can negatively affect the marine environment,” said Ginette Vanasse, executive director of the Canadian Health Product Stewardship Association. “So, what you put down the drain really matters.” Since 2008, the CRD Regional Source Control Program, in collaboration with the Health Products Stewardship Association, Island Health and pharmacists throughout the region, has been actively informing the public about the BC Medications Return Program, what types of medications can be returned and how to properly return them. “Medication return is so important. Martial arts fighter comes home Training centres planned for Salt Spring and Victoria BY ELIZABETH NOLAN
D R I F T W O O D S TA F F
I
slanders interested in mixed martial arts will soon have the opportunity to train with a champion, with David Puhky opening a new facility on Salt Spring in June. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows for a combination of fighting styles both standing and on the ground. Puhky, who grew up on Salt Spring, started making a name for himself in the Calgary scene several years back, winning his first fight at Alberta’s Havoc Fighting Championships in December 2014. While busy since then working in the Alberta oil fields, his intention has always been to do more fighting and to start teaching, with plans to eventually make his way back to B.C. “I wanted to start competing more because I’ve been away for so long. But while I was in the oil patch I was always training,” Puhky said. When in Calgary Puhky trained at various specialized gyms, going for the top centres in each type of martial arts rather than settling for general training in one space. One of his mainstays has been 101 Academy under CJ Hollett, a well-known Canadian fighter who has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Puhky, who just received his purple belt after seven years of training, explained the advancement process is much more difficult than other martial arts. It can take at least 15 years to reach master status. To up his kickboxing game, Puhky recently spent two months training at the epicentre of Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand. He did two gruelling sessions per day at the American Kickboxing Academy, one of the top three gyms in the country. While there he was invited into the ring as a sponsored fighter. “It was my life-long dream, really. I’ve been wanting to go for the past four years,” Puhky said. “What I want to do in life is teach MMA and fight.” Those who follow MMA will be impressed to know that >>

David Puhky, shirtless in centre of photo, with MMA colleagues in Thailand. Canadian star fighter George St-Pierre trained under the Thai’s facility’s head teacher. Under the same teacher, Puhky earned respect — and ended up getting paid for his skills — by enduring conditions unknown to most Canadian martial artists. “It’s not only 35 degrees with humidity, the classes are two hours long, instead of the one and a half hours we’re used to, and I was training four hours a day. It’s the hardest training I’ve ever done in my life,” Puhky said. Thai kickboxing is a little harsher on its home ground. Fights are five rounds instead of three, and elbows, banned in North American kickboxing, are allowed. During training the teachers are apt to kick students in the stomach if their knee touches the ground during exercises. Puhky was also not prepared for the rituals that go along with entering the arena in Thailand. Still, he was given the top spot as the main event
for his fight and succeeded in beating his more experienced opponent with a knock-out in the second round. “You regret things you don’t do in life. I didn’t want to wake up and regret not doing it,” Puhky said. “I always think that when you’re training that hard in practice, when it comes to the fight it will be easy. In my head being knocked unconscious was the only way I was going to lose.” Winning, he added, is the best feeling in the world. “You know all that hard work wasn’t wasted — you did the game plan. It’s euphoric. For at least 30 seconds the world goes away.” It’s safe to say that although Puhky learned some valuable lessons in Thailand, he won’t be quite as exacting on the local students he takes under his wing. He does, however, believe martial arts are extremely valuable for teaching discipline and strength, which is great for
young students even without adding competition to the mix. “For kids, you don’t have to fight to do the training,” Puhky said. A dip in the economy meant it took Puhky a bit longer to leave Alberta than planned, but now he and his wife are ready for the plunge. His new Fitness Academy will open up near the Bay Street Bridge in Victoria on June 1 and he hopes to start offering sessions on Salt Spring by the middle of that month. Local classes will be for adults and kids ages 10 and up, and will take place at the Fulford property owned by his dad Ron Puhky. For this group the focus will most likely be less on kickboxing and more on grappling techniques. “I think it will be so good for teenagers on Salt Spring. I just think it will be so great,” Puhky said. Anyone who would like more information can contact Puhky at 403-975-4636 or davidpuhky@gmail.com. ■

The Way of Council
New process supports healthy community relationships
By Suzan Denis
S p e ci a l to t h e D riftwood
In February, I learned The Way of Council with Ne’ith Arrow, a carrier of Council, shamanic practitioner and sweat lodge facilitator who resides on Salt Spring Island. Even though the introductory training is now complete, Council continues to meet every Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wellness Centre. Meeting regularly gives us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of Council. The Way of Council is a communication process that shows us how to be in community. It facilitates inclusivity, promotes compassionate connection, and creates a sense of partnership. This is accomplished through deep listening based on the four intentions: 1) Listen from the Heart 2) Speak from the Heart 3) Be Lean 4) Be Spontaneous
And the three wisdoms: 1) Will what I have to say serve me wisely? 2) Will what I say serve the circle wisely? 3) Will what I say serve the whole wisely? To listen from the heart means to be receptive, to suspend judgment, reactions and personal opinions. To speak spontaneously without planning what to say when it’s our turn and to get to the “heart of the matter” so everyone in the circle has a chance to speak cultivates the ability to “speak into the listening” or speak from the heart. The intention of the training was to introduce a method for honouring the needs and values of community so that community could work together as an integrated whole. Every community has situations that call for a path of expression where diversity, history
and experience can be spoken so that everyone understands what has happened. It is important to know how the situation has impacted individuals and the community as a whole. There is significance in knowing how people see themselves and others as a result of the situation. Only then can the community engage in visioning or problem solving that moves the situation forward with insight, wisdom and on common ground. Council is open to all who desire to share, understand, reflect deeply and grow in an environment of mutual respect and collective responsibility. Council is an excellent place to explore what matters to us as we tell your stories and have others listen. Everyone is most welcome to join the circle Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Please contact Ne’ith at neiththriving@ gmail.com for more information. ■

Simple ways to alleviate back pain Few health problems are as prevalent as back pain.
The American Chiropractic Association says that 50 per cent of working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Bone and Joint Health Canada states that as much as 80 per cent of people experience back pain at least once in their lifetime. Back pain can be so significant that it results in a loss of function that impedes daily activities. In fact, according to the 2015 Global Burden of Disease report, back pain is the single leading cause of disability in most countries. Back pain can be a complex issue. According to data complied by TheGoodBody.com, only one in 10 people learns the primary cause of their pain. That’s because many things, including muscle sprains or joint irritation, can contribute to back pain. Other factors that may contribute to back pain include arthritis, stress, obesity, or diseases of the internal organs. Each of these issues can make it challenging to uncover the culprit behind back pain. Ruling out degenerative diseases can be a first step in treating back pain. Doctors also may ask their patients about their level of physical activity. Doctors may want to know if patients suffering back pain engage in activities involving repetitive movements to determine if their back pain can be traced to these activities. Some common factors contribute to back pain, and addressing these issues may bring about relief. • Strengthen core muscles. Poor muscle tone, especially in the back and abdominal muscles, may result in back pain. Engaging in activities that strengthen the core can help strengthen the area, offering more support to the back. A doctor, physical therapist or fitness instructor may guide you in exercises, such as planks or abdominal crunches, that can strengthen the core. • Get up and move. A sedentary lifestyle can be a major contributor to back pain. Nearly half of Americans who experience back pain are desk workers who spend the majority of their time sitting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Qi Spine, a clinic that gathered data from 1,300 people who said they deal with spine-related pain, found that half the participants with sedentary jobs had lower back pain. Standing, moving around and taking breaks from the desk can help alleviate pain. • Lose weight. The spine is vulnerable to effects of obesity. Extra weight in the abdomen may pull the pelvis forward and strain the lower back, states the American Obesity Association. Losing weight can reduce that strain on the lower back, thereby reducing pain. Back pain is a frequent complaint and compels many people to visit their doctors. Exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening core muscles can go a long way toward keeping the back healthy and pain-free. ■ DRIFT WOOD PUBLISHING
