Keeping a watchful eye Several eye conditions can affect children

W

hile a loss of visual acuity is often associated with senior citizens, various diseases and conditions of the eye can affect children. The American Academy of Opthalmology says many conditions and diseases can impact a child’s vision. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to improving a youngster’s eye health and helping him or her see and feel better.

Learning about certain conditions and how to recognize their accompanying symptoms can help parents ensure kids get the treatment they need. >>

• Amblyopia

Often referred to as “lazy eye,” amblyopia may be characterized by reduced vision in an eye that has not received adequate use during early childhood. Amblyopia may result from misalignment of a child’s eyes or from one eye focusing better than the other. If left untreated, the weaker eye can continue to weaken until it is rendered useless. Sight in the affected eye can be restored if treatment is begun early, says Prevent Blindness America. Glasses, eye exercises or surgery may be prescribed to help fix the underlying causes of the condition.

• Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition wherein objects viewed at both a distance and close up can appear blurry. Experts say it occurs from the uneven curvature of the cornea or lens, which prevents rays of light from entering the eye and focusing on a single point on the retina, otherwise known as a refractive error. Prescription eyeglasses often fix astigmatism. All About Vision also says that refractive surgery may correct astigmatism.

• Colour blindness (colour vision deficiency)

The main symptom of colour blindness is difficulty distinguishing between colours or making mistakes when identifying colours, particularly those shaded red and green. Typically by age five, children with normal colour vision will be able to identify groups of colours, so if a school-aged child is having difficulty or showing disinterest in colouring, he or she may benefit from a colourblindness test. The National Eye Institute says colour blindness is much more common in males than in females.

• Pediatric glaucoma

This rare condition, also known as congenital glaucoma, occurs in infants and young children. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says incorrect development of the eye’s drainage system before birth leads to increased intraocular pressure, which can damage the optic nerve. Enlarged eyes, corneal cloudiness and sensitivity to light can be symptoms. Medication and surgery are required in most cases.

• Strabismus

Strabismus is a condition of misaligned eyes. It occurs when the eye muscles fail to work together and the eyes turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. By the age of three to four months, an infant’s eyes should be able to focus and be straight and parallel. Parents should consult an eye care professional if they notice eye alignment problems in their children. Pink eye (conjunctivitis), diabetes-related eye problems and other refractive errors also can occur in children. Routine eye examinations can identify problems and get children the treatment they need. ■

#TellMe about that mammogram Women now entitled to be given breast density information Last month on CBC’s The Current, Anna Maria Tremonti interviewed a woman involved with a group called Dense Breasts Canada (DBC) and an awareness campaign called #TellMe. Kathy Kaulfield was found to have a golf-ball-sized tumour in one of her breasts in 2015, despite receiving an all-clear mammogram report five months earlier. Through that process she learned that she had “dense breasts” — ones that consist of less fat and more fibre and glandular tissue. Not only is having dense breasts a significant risk factor for breast cancer but it makes detecting tumours on a mammogram more difficult. “Dense breasts make it harder for radiologists viewing your mammogram to spot cancer because dense breast tissue shows up as white and so does a cancerous tumour,” states the DBC website. Kaulfield called it “like looking for a snowball in a snowstorm.”

By GAIL SJUBERG

DRIF T WOOD EDI TOR

The whole “dense breasts” term twigged with me because I remember many years ago a doctor telling me during a routine examination that I had dense breasts. He then joked, “It doesn’t mean they are dumb, ha ha.” Being quite disinterested in health matters at that point in my life, I didn’t ask the obvious question, “What does it mean?” It wasn’t until hearing The Current interview, then another segment on White Coat, Black Art about the DBC campaign to have breast density information shared with women after they have a screening mammogram, that I thought about what my former doctor had said. And it’s not like it’s an unusual situation. About 40 per cent of women have dense breasts, says the DBC. What it means is that mammograms miss about 50 per cent of early stage cancers in women with dense >>

breasts, so the relief one feels upon receiving good news following a mammogram could be misplaced. Further diagnostic tests, like an ultrasound, are recommended. DBC has initiated a #TellMe #DisMoi campaign to get governments across Canada to mandate the sharing of breast density information with patients. B.C. is the first province to get on board as of midOctober. According to a B.C. government press release, the change in policy to now provide breast density information follows the completion of an external review by Dr. Andy Coldman, an emeritus scientist in the cancer control research department at UBC and the BC Cancer Research Centre. “The review report made three key recommendations, one of which was to develop a plan to communicate breast density results in B.C. The other two include continued assessment of the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System, which performs density scoring, and monitoring of the ongoing results of randomized clinical trials of additional screening in women with negative screening mammography.” ■ More info is available through

BC Breast cancer screening Facts • Around one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. • Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women in B.C., with around 3,500 women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis each year. • BC Cancer’s Breast Screening Program offers no-cost screening mammograms to eligible women in B.C., between the ages of 40 and 74. • Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women in B.C., yet only half of eligible women are getting regular mammograms. • Mammograms can usually detect lumps two to three years before a woman or her primary care provider can feel them. • Research has shown a 25 per cent reduction in deaths from breast cancer among women who screen regularly. • BC Cancer’s Breast Screening Program was the first of its kind in Canada and celebrated its 30th anniversary in July 2018.

Shoe wear patterns tell tales Structural concerns may lead to mobility problems Excessive wear along the outer side or inner edges is another warning sign.

Do you ever look at the bottom of your shoes? Experts say shoe treads can tell a lot about the way you walk and can even help predict the development of pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and possibly your back. “Most people don’t think about their feet and lower limbs until they start to hurt, but shoe wear patterns can indicate possible issues before pain develops,” explains Kevin Fraser, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a Canadian certified pedorthist. “The wear patterns on your shoes illustrate the repetitive motion of your feet and lower limbs, so they show if you have structural concerns that may

lead to the development of pain and mobility problems.” Fraser says symmetrical wear on both shoes is normal, particularly along the edge of the heel and the big toe. However, it’s concerning if one shoe is worn more than the other, the heel is worn excessively, or there is a localized area of wear. Excessive wear along the outer side or inner edges is another warning sign. In addition to examining your tread wear, Fraser recommends placing your shoes on a flat surface. The shoes should lie flat. If they tip inwards or outwards or the sides lean in or out, you should consider booking

a consultation with a foot expert as you may have a biomechanical abnormality such as muscle imbalance, a leg length difference, or feet that roll too much inwards or outwards. Healthy feet roll gently from the outside of the heel inwards towards the big toe, so the arch absorbs the impact of each step to cushion the ankles, knees and hips. But if you notice anything concerning when you read your shoes, don’t be alarmed — a Canadian certified pedorthist can help manage most foot and lower limb issues with appropriate footwear selection or custommade foot orthotics. ■

t is hard to miss while walking through the market. Your eye catches the branding and you think, “What? Does it really say that?” That’s what draws you in. What keeps you there is the array of cupcakes, cookies and other gluten-free treats that Darren Potvin of FUK Flour has on display. “The cupcakes are awesome. Nobody can even tell they’re gluten-free or vegan,” he says, pointing at a dark chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting. That’s not to say that being gluten-free or vegan are to be avoided. One preconceived notion about gluten-free food is that it is a poor substitute for bread. Bread gets its rise from gluten, which acts like a binding agent and allows bubbles to form inside the dough. After removing that >>

ingredient, the foods often fall flat. People expect something like poundcake when they bite into gluten-free pastries. Potvin’s treats are nothing like that. They are moist, bendy, puffy and delicious. “Everything is infused with chia, but we make our own chia flour, so you won’t have a gritty-ness or anything,” he says. “A lot of my secrets are in the products we use. It’s almost like a science lab . . . we tend to go back to the basics and re-engineer [the recipes]. It’s like being a mad scientist in the kitchen. A lot of people who try our products are surprised.” Potvin’s ingredients are chosen entirely for their health benefits. He uses chia flour, coconut palm syrup, coconut, locally sourced figs, vegan chocolate chips, chickpea flour, quinoa flour and millet flour, among other ingredients to ensure the nutritional quality of his food. “We remove all GMOs and do everything we can to make it healthy,” he says. “The way we bake is very different from any other gluten-free baker. We don’t use corn, rice or soy. We cover the top eight allergies right now in Canada and in total we cover 15 allergies. I can basically redesign any of my recipes to suit anyone’s needs.” It is this health-consciousness that led Potvin to start the company in the first place. After 20 years of health issues, Potvin was diagnosed with hemochromatosis, a genetic

iron disorder in which the body absorbs too much iron. If left untreated, it can lead to arthritis, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver, according to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society. That, combined with constant allergies, led him to look into his diet. “I went on a process-of-elimination diet with a naturopath and then reintegrated all new foods. I found out which foods were affecting me severely,” he says. “I had arthritis in my two index fingers, which is caused by hemochromatosis, and I couldn’t close them. In one year after changing my diet, I was able to close them again. So that shows immediately that there can be good results. A year is pretty fast considering people eat gluten their whole lives.” After experiencing the results of a dietary change, Potvin began researching gluten. He explained that being gluten-free removes inflammation from the body and can help with things like arthritis and auto-immune disorders. “How I make people understand it easier is that the first word in gluten is “glue.” It’s a binding agent, that’s what it does to our body,” he explains. “It doesn’t allow the free radicals to leave our body. It stores them and causes all kinds of issues.” In his research, he learned that a contributing factor to gluten-related issues is the fucokinase-L enzyme, often written as FUK. >>

The name stuck. “A lot of people love it. It really draws people in and it gives me a chance to help educate them,” he says. “The FUK name became my research first, then became the business name. “It’s a good marketing strategy,” he added. Baking pastries and catering is only one side of FUK Flour. Potvin has also been researching gluten and how being gluten free can benefit people. While in Ottawa, he managed an online centre called Gluten-Free Ottawa. At the time, the site was one of the top knowledge sites in Canada. He has worked with Kathy Smith and Dr. William Davis, both leading experts in the field. Potvin and his husband moved to the island in June, after running the company in Ottawa since 2010. They plan to re-open the website on Salt Spring and incorporate some of the more recent research in the gluten-free world. “Once we moved from Ottawa we closed it down and eventually we’ll re-open something here with the same type of information. A lot of things have changed over 10 years. There’s been a lot of research,” he says. FUK Flour does catering, offering gluten-free options for any kind of event. He is also looking at getting into local grocery stores, and has had inquiries from off-island companies as well. “Because we don’t have a large facility and I’ve had numerous other organizations from off-island express interest, I’ve said that I’m just going to stick with Salt Spring,” he says.

FUK Flour’s market stall sign and cheese sticks. FUK Flour is planning to open a retail location on the island eventually. For now, Potvin is happy to teach people about the benefits of being gluten-free from the Saturday market. The line at his stall seems to be never ending, with people coming back week after week. “We only started this on the first day of the market. It’s still young and we’ve had a very great response from people,” he says. ■

SUPPORTING THE EXCELLENT CARE PROVIDED AT YOUR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL Thank you to our loyal and generous community of donors

C

anadian Patient Safety Week (CPSW) is a national, annual campaign to inspire extraordinary improvement in patient safety and quality. Working together, thousands of healthcare professionals, patients and families spread the message to “Ask. Listen. Talk” to create a safer healthcare system. Canadian Patient Safety Week runs October 29 to Nov. 2.

This year, CPSW will focus on medication safety with the goal of reducing medication errors across Canada.

Not All Meds Get Along encourages an open dialogue between patients and healthcare professionals by promoting each to seek medication reviews for at-risk populations and promoting the use of the 5 Questions to Ask About Your Medications. (See page 17)

A SERIOUS ISSUE

Medication errors should be taken seriously. Consider these facts: • An estimated 37 per cent of seniors in nine provinces received a prescription for a drug that should not be taken by this population. • Two out of three Canadians over the age of 65 take at least five different prescription medications. One out of four Canadians over the age of 65 take at least 10 different prescription medications. • In 2016, one in 143 Canadian seniors was hospitalized due to harmful effects of their medication. • Preventable medication hospitalizations cost over $140 million in direct and indirect healthcare expenditures, with lost productivity, including time off work, adding $12 million in costs. Globally, the cost associated with medication errors has been estimated at over $55 billion.

MEDICATION REVIEWS

To reduce the risk of medication errors, medication reviews are specifically recommended for: • anyone on five or more medications; • those over 65 years of age; • individuals with multiple caregivers, or using multiple pharmacies; • people at risk of falls; • individuals with chronic medical issues; and • during transitions of care. Ask your healthcare professional or pharmacist for a medication review when you are having a new or existing prescription filled or if you are considering adding, removing or changing any non-prescription medications or supplements. >> DRIFT WOOD PUBLISHING

Solid Support

Family Place programs give a boost to parents and kids One of the keys to lifelong health is having a good social and emotional start in life. That is easier to accomplish for families that have access to community support and education. On Salt Spring Island, the Family Place family resource centre is available to help families with children aged 0 to 6, as well as providing perinatal classes. All programs are free and operate from Family Place at 120 Park Dr. or occasionally other places in the community.

• Perinatal education classes begin Saturday, Oct. 13 and run for three consecutive Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m. Families can also register for this program by phoning or e-mailing Family Place. >>

“Transcendental Meditation changed my life”

Dr. Wm. E. Lea All Aspects of General & Family Dentistry including:

— Hugh Jackman

Learn how this simple technique of effortless transcending can enhance your life.

ACCORDING TO THE MAYO CLINIC:

Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural technique ... This form of meditation allows your body to settle into a state of profound rest and relaxation and your mind to achieve a state of inner peace, without needing to use concentration or effort.

FORBES MAGAZINE SAYS:

Perhaps its greatest benefit is that it’s relatively quick to learn and easy to master. No waiting weeks or months of practice before you see results: TM cuts right to the chase, taking only days — or for some, minutes — before one feels reprieve from their painful and overwhelming thoughts.

To learn more about TM on Salt Spring Island, call 778.353.3014 for a free Intro talk. Or find us on the web: http://tmsaltspring.com
