Park Use Permit Reminder Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation (PARC)manages all activities and uses within Salt Spring community parks, many of which require a park use permit. The goal of the park use permit system is to regulate and manage special uses within community parks to minimize the impact on the natural environment, park users, park operations and facilities. A park use permit is required by anyone who intends to hold a commercial or non-commercial activity or event which attracts participants and spectators, commercial filming or reserve exclusive use of a park, trail or picnic shelter. This includes, but is not limited to, a festival, competition, tournament, show or outdoor ceremony within a community park or on a trail. Contact the PARC office to see if you need to get a park use permit and to receive the application form.

Rainbow Road AQUATIC CENTRE – Operating Contract and Service Level

Victoria, BC– Salt Spring Island’s Rainbow Road Indoor Pool (RRIP) operating contract is up for renewal March 31, 2018. The Capital Regional District (CRD) will be taking over the operation of the facility in order to provide additional programming and increase operating hours. “Changes to the operating contract at the RRIP will allow us to increase access to recreation opportunities while keeping costs down,” said Wayne McIntyre, Director of the Salt Spring Island Electoral Area. “We will also see additional job opportunities on Salt Spring Island for youth and adults and hope to see an increase in aquatic and recreation program participation by the whole community.”

GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD | AUGUST 23, 2017

The operating contract has been held by an off-island private contractor since opening in 2008. At the time, outsourcing was viewed as a less expensive and lower financial risk option for the start-up of a new facility. However, an opportunity exists to decrease operating costs long term, while improving service offerings by moving away from a “fee for service” contract model that no longer offers the Salt Spring Island community the best value. Under the new model, RRIP will increase operating hours and recreational programs.

The increased service level will begin in April 2018 and will include: - Additional full-time, part-time and auxiliary positions at competitive salaries - The addition of 8 weekly hours including opening on Saturdays - Additional weekly aquatic fitness, leadership and swim lesson program offerings The CRD and the Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation Commission would like to thank Recreation Excellence for the past ten years under two service contracts and for providing aquatic programs and services to the community of Salt Spring Island. We invite the community to review the full business case, April 2018 pool schedule or job opportunities by visiting www.crd.bc.ca/ssi-pool.

Remember ... you can

It is a proven fact that exercising in water is a great way to increase the resistance on your body as you move, yet it’s easy on the joints since the buoyancy takes a lot of the weight. There is also an increase in the calories burned because your body is losing heat while in the water. Add these factors onto a great workout directed by one of our certified instructors and you will feel the difference right away. Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre offers a selection of aquafit classes to suit everyone’s needs.

Energizer

Less intense than the morning Energizer session, this class is specifically for those looking for more strength and stretching. An instructor leads the group through a number of exercises designed to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving. RAINBOW ROAD aquatic centre LESSON LIST 2017

The Pool is Open In September !! The Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre has traditionally closed for annual maintenance the first three weeks in September. During the pool closure the main tank is drained to allow for inspection and repairs on the pool tank, tiles, grouting, jets and drains. In June of 2015 North Salt Spring Water Works implemented stage four water restrictions that prevented the filling of public swimming pools. With these water restrictions in effect the pool was not able to be drained during the 2015 maintenance closure. It is anticipated that similar water restrictions will occur annually between May and September unless a permanent solution to water supply and demand on SSI can be reached. After assessing operational needs and the impact on individual users and regular rental groups such as the Stingrays Swim Club, it was decided that the annual pool shutdown will be moved to April, before water restrictions are introduced for the summer months.

Do You Want to Sell Your House This Year? With home prices recovering and interest rates still low, now is a good time to list. Low interest rates are your friend…and buyers know that rock-bottom mortgages can’t last forever! Houses tend to sell faster in spring and summer largely in part due to families wanting to be settled before the new school year begins.

Don’t change a thing -

Before making any changes, renovating or even painting, give me a call. I can help you assess what needs to be done to have your home market ready quickly.

Swimming abilities are up to the discretion of the Lifeguards on duty. Weak swimmers may also be asked to put on a lifejacket.

Don’t just list your home—market it.

We will need to develop your marketing plan. People are doing so much more research ahead of time. Today’s buyers are demanding. They are savvier about market dynamics and data and want to see houses on their own schedule.

Don’t “test” the market -

Price it right! Pricing is very important these days. Pricing right will create the traffic needed, also in the first week a listing goes on the market, it gets approximately four times as many visits as a month later. One dilemma sellers may face is whether to buy a new place at the same time. Buy a new place with the contingency of selling can be difficult and stressful. In general I would say it’s better to sell before you buy—there’s nothing worse than having to carry two mortgages at once when it is not affordable. There are plenty of options when selling including the possibility you may be able to rent your house from the buyer for a few months or finding a short-term rental.

Be Water Savvy Use Only What You Need

Water is one of Salt Spring Island’s most precious resources. Please join islanders as we work together to ensure that we use this limited resource wisely, and that we respect and protect our island watersheds. Try these handy water saving tips: Keep showers short. Use low-flow shower heads. If bathing, try a 1/4 tub only. Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines. Shut off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing up hands or dishes. Use low-flush toilets. Flush less often. Use a bucket to capture and reuse shower, bath and dishwater in your garden. Inform guests from the mainland about our islands’ limited water supply, and ask them to be please be aware of keeping consumption down.

Together EVERY water saver makes a difference.
