Public Access Liferings (PAL) In partnership with the Salt Spring Island Lions Club and the Lifesaving Society of BC, PARC will be installing PAL units at four popular waterfront locations identified as high risk: St. Mary Lake, Cusheon Lake, Blackburn Lake and Stowell Lake. Following a one-year trial, other popular waterfront locations may be considered for installation of the units. The need for lifesaving equipment at public beach accesses was recognized after the tragic drowning of two men in August of 2016. As one more strategy to prevent drownings in BC, the Lifesaving Society offers communities the opportunity to participate in the PAL Project.

After researching several models of liferings, the Lifesaving Society has determined that the best value for money is found using the Guardian 600 model (pictured here). This unit provides durability, ease of use, simple installation and minimal maintenance. This housing unit is very durable and resistant to vandalism. To prevent theft and misuse, the unit includes a use indicator and warnings against misuse. Installation of the four PAL units will be completed prior to the 2017 May long weekend. We would like to thank the Lions Club for their continued support, and remind everyone to play safe in and around the water. Jon Suk PARC Chair

• Late Pick-up Fee - Parents may be charged a late pick-up fee if they arrive after the end time of any PARCrun children’s camp. The fee of $20 will be due at the PARC office before your child can attend the next day of camp. If you are going to be late, please call the office and let us know as soon as possible. • Freedom of Information - If you are registering for a program, purchasing a pool pass, or applying for a Park Use Permit, we will ask for certain personal information. This is required to ensure proper record keeping, to properly register you in the program of your choice, to ensure the security and proper use of your pass, and for invoicing and other correspondence as needed. The information is for the sole use of Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation and its staff, and is collected under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Section 26(c). Water Fitness Classes

It is a proven fact that exercising in water is a great way to increase the resistance on your body as you move, yet it’s easy on the joints since the buoyancy takes a lot of the weight. There is also an increase in the calories burned because your body is losing heat while in the water. Add these factors onto a great workout directed by one of our certified instructors and you will feel the difference right away. Rainbow Road Indoor Pool offers a selection of aquafit classes to suit everyone’s needs.

Energizer

This fun and upbeat class will challenge you to work hard in shallow or deep water. The instructor will guide you through a number of exercises which will help with your strength, flexibility and fitness.

Aqualite Just like the name says a gentle, low-intensity exercise. Great if you are just starting out, have joint problems, or are recovering from an injury. Nooners

Less intense than the morning Energizer session, this class is specifically for those looking for more strength and stretching. An instructor leads the group through a number of exercises designed to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving.

Do You Want to Sell Your House This Year?

Yoga - Physiotherapy

www.spacetoremember.com Brett Wearne | 250 538 0924 | brettwearne@gmail.com

With home prices recovering and interest rates still low, now is a good time to list. Low interest rates are your friend…and buyers know that rock-bottom mortgages can’t last forever! Houses tend to sell faster in spring and summer largely in part due to families wanting to be settled before the new school year begins.

Teron Wolf | 250.886.6393 | teron@teronwolf.com GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD | APRIL 5, 2017

Before making any changes, renovating or even painting, give me a call. I can help you assess what needs to be done to have your home market ready quickly. We will need to develop your marketing plan. People are doing so much more research ahead of time. Today’s buyers are demanding. They are savvier about market dynamics and data and want to see houses on their own schedule.

Don’t “test” the market -

Price it right! Pricing is very important these days. Pricing right will create the traffic needed, also in the first week a listing goes on the market, it gets approximately four times as many visits as a month later. One dilemma sellers may face is whether to buy a new place at the same time. Buy a new place with the contingency of selling can be difficult and stressful. In general I would say it’s better to sell before you buy—there’s nothing worse than having to carry two mortgages at once when it is not affordable. There are plenty of options when selling including the possibility you may be able to rent your house from the buyer for a few months or finding a short-term rental.

Maxwell Lake Please Respect the Watershed PROTECT OUR WATER SUPPLY Together, the Maxwell Lake, Rippon Creek, and Larmour Creek watersheds total nearly 540 acres and make up the water supply area for Maxwell Lake. These watersheds are valuable natural assets that provide important ecosystem services such as natural filtration of the runoff that refills Maxwell Lake each year. In addition to supplying water to many island homes, farms, and businesses, the water supply area contains sensitive wetland and Garry Oak ecosystems and provides critical habitat for a number of rare species including the Northern Red-legged Frog. Both islanders and tourists alike have an important role to play in watershed protection by honouring the fact that these watersheds are not open to the public for walking, hiking, swimming, picnicking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, motor biking, ATV riding or any other activity. Use of the watershed increases the danger of wildfire and creates pathways that provide a direct route for nutrients and sediment to enter the lake during the rainy season. This nutrient loading negatively impacts water quality in the short and long term. Healthy and intact watersheds help to filter and purify runoff before it reaches the lake; damage to the watershed will directly result in decreased water quality and increased future treatment costs in order to meet the appropriate standards and regulations for drinking water. The North Salt Spring Waterworks District appreciates your cooperation in our ongoing efforts to preserve this valuable natural resource.
