SALT SPRING ADVENTURE CO. • 3

Outdoors lover guides adventure fun Looking for a fun and educational way to get out on the water for family members or friends? Salt Spring Adventure Company offers a full range of activities that make the most of the island’s beautiful outdoor playground. With opportunities like whale-watching trips, kayak tours and multi-day expeditions, paddle board rentals and even stand-up paddle board yoga lessons, business owner Yvonne Poirier makes sure there’s something to cater to everyone’s interest and comfort levels. The company also offers bike rentals, summer camps and customized group programs. “We are here to educate and allow clients to experience an adventure that suits them, and our main goal is to make sure everyone has fun!” Poirier says.

Poirier bought the business around five years ago, after managing the company founded by Sean Mulligan for a few years. One of her favourite things about being an outdoor educator and guide is being able to work with youth, particularly those who are experiencing nature for the first time. “I love to watch them as they reconnect and learn to love their time outside, learning and trying different things,” she explains. As someone who loves to spend her free time hiking, foraging, kayaking and boating, it’s clear Poirier is the perfect host to help others share those joys — and that she’s found her dream job. Getting to do it on Salt Spring is just the icing on the cake.

An oasis of good eating, drinking, entertainment & friends

One of Salt Spring’s most cherished watering holes, Moby’s is not a bar, but a pub in the full sense of the tradition. Anyone from age 19 to 90 will find what they need for a fun and enjoyable outing. “A true pub’s work does not end with drinks alone. The pub serves as a restaurant, meeting house, social club, town hall and sporting house,” says owner Dale Schweighardt. “Moby’s is a pub in the true sense of the word.” Moby’s experienced staff ensure every visit is enjoyable,

whatever the reason. Their expert service matches the exceptional skill in the kitchen, where the chef creates delectable dishes like warm duck baby kale salad and barbecued pulled pork slow roasted in-house. Gourmet burgers and sandwiches and items like the smoked black cod and chorizo chowder put the menu a tasty cut above standard casual fare. As for ambience, Moby’s is the home of live music during all seasons, with great bands and DJs from Salt Spring, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland rocking the stage weekend nights. Weeknights, the pub’s role as a community gathering place is even more pronounced, with islanders feeling comfortable enough to raise their voices in song during two regular events: the SongJam sing-along on Wednesdays and an open mic night on Thursdays. Sports fans will find the home team is well represented in the pub, as every Canucks game is screened. Moby’s has also become the unofficial centre for fans wanting to witness special events both with national and local significance. In the past year, islanders gathered to watch the FIFA women’s world cup and to learn Salt Spring’s results of the Kraft Project Play competition. With a great outdoor patio providing outstanding views of Ganges Harbour, there’s really nothing else to ask for. “Settle in, get comfortable, grab a pint and enjoy a taste of authentic pub cuisine,” Schweighardt says. “We’re sure you’ll have a good time. Because you’re not visiting a bar, you’ve come to the pub.”

Longtime Salt Spring resident has been divining water for over fifty years Albert Kaye finds and drills water sources in the most challenging landscapes. Living in the Gulf Islands, residents are faced on a daily basis with a strange paradox- we’re surrounded by water and yet water can be one of the most difficult things to get. As we all know, water is the source of life, so finding a good water source can be a homeowner’s most important task. Albert Kaye realized many years ago that he has a gift for finding water, and has translated this skill into Albert Kaye and Sons Drilling, a well established island business. Despite their long history

on Salt Spring, the Kayes enjoy meeting newcomers to the island and are always happy to extend their services and special skills. In addition to divining and drilling wells, Albert Kaye and Sons Drilling provides several services; they also offer water sample testing and pump testing through Maxxam Analytics in Victoria. SALT SPRING ISLAND MOBILE ELECTRONIC REPAIR • 9

Local mobile repairs save islanders time and money close to home Colton Prevost founded Salt Spring Island Mobile Electronic Repair around a year and a half ago, building on five years experience before opening shop at the Ganges Alley complex. Prevost was repairing phones and tablets on the side while working for BC Ferries before deciding to make it his main business. Repairs of all sorts are done at the shop, but most of the time is spent replacing screens and batteries on iPhones and iPads. “Batteries on phones typically last about two years before noticeably degrading, and we offer free diagnosis for battery health,” Prevost says. “Our prices for battery replacements are typically half of what Apple or most shops charge, as I would rather see customers holding onto their devices for as long as possible,

instead of further contributing to the wastefulness of modern society.” The shop stocks nearly every iPhone and iPad part possible, so turnaround time is minimal. They also carry many accessories such as charging cables, tempered glass and cases, as well as refurbished devices. Prevost notes that software corruption and damage from liquid is becoming common these days, and many people don’t consider backing up their device’s data until it’s too late. If a device does take an unwanted dip, he says the worst thing to do is to plug it in afterward because the components will short out. “If you care about your photos and other data, bring the device in as soon as possible so we can clean the motherboard properly,” Prevost advises.

GULF ISLANDS

57 YEARS OF PUBLISHING The Gulf Islands Driftwood celebrated 57 years of publishing in March 2017. The first edition of the Salt Spring Driftwood newspaper landed on island shores on Thursday, March 24, 1960, at the hands of editor-publisher-owner E.V. (Woody) Fisher and his wife Barbara (Bobbie) Fisher. Frank and Barbara Richards purchased the Driftwood in January 1967. Frank Richards had been with the Sidney Review for 17 years and its editor for the previous 10. Barbara was a registered nurse but embraced her new business and an active life on Salt Spring until her death in 1987. All three of the Richards children — Jill, Tony and Valerie — were involved in the paper at various times, with Tony becoming as hooked on the business as his father

had been. Frank remained the president of Driftwood Publishing Ltd. until his death at age 93 in 2011 and continued to write and contribute until 2003. Tony retired from day-to-day involvement with the paper in 2004, but stayed on as the company’s managing director. After Frank’s death he became president and was acting publisher for one year until Amber Ogilvie came on in 2012. Over the years the Driftwood has won many provincial and national awards, including “Best Overall Newspaper” in Canada within its circulation category and seven other national awards received in 2017. The formula for the Driftwood’s success is simple, and is based on neither luck nor

coincidence: we present a credible news package every week and in so doing deliver to advertisers the audience they wish to reach. The staff at the Driftwood has seen many changes in 57 years, notably in technology that permits us to do more, and do it better. The changes in the next 50 years or so will likely be even greater as we shift to different ways of delivering the news. But the principles will remain unchanged, as will our commitment to serving the Gulf Islands community. New innovations over the past few years have included video style news reports available through gulfislandsdriftwood. com and on Facebook. Readers can also get up to the minute news through with our Twitter feeds.

Salt Spring Fire-Rescue personnel have put all their training and skills into practice over the past week, with a serious structure fire on Sarah Way and a greenhouse fire on Trincomali Heights among the calls testing local resources. Firefighters were called to a vehicle fire that was threatening a structure on Sarah Way on Wednesday, Oct. 4 around 4 p.m. The call soon went out for additional resources as the fire quickly spread up the home’s wooden siding and into the attic. Salt Spring Fire Chief Arjuna George said the newer home of 3,500 to 4,000 square feet posed a challenge because of the roof height and because the fire moved into the interior. As well, human resources were stretched, with just 18 members, including technicians and tender drivers, available. “We were very, very taxed,” George said. “It was a very stubborn fire and it took a lot of effort to pull down the ceiling from inside.” Firefighters on the scene faced exhaustion after serving in teams for spells of 17 minutes each. The air temperature was already warm for the afternoon, and the temperature inside the house was extremely hot, George said.

The Salt Spring Local Trust Committee made steps toward meeting the island’s affordable housing needs by moving three project applications forward at Thursday’s business meeting.

The LTC started its run at advancing nearly 100 new units by giving first reading to a rezoning application for Tami and Fernando dos Santos’ Dragonfly Commons development, which proposes 20 low-cost micro homes that eligible people employed in the community could purchase. “This initiative has my unqualified support,” said trustee George Grams. “We know housing is perhaps our most pressing issue at the moment. I thank you for bringing this forward and making this opportunity possible for the community.”

POMODORO PIZZA AND MORE • 13

Pizza ... and a whole lot more Lianne Fidler has been the owner of Pomodoro Pizza and More since August of 2016. Located at 142 Fulford-Ganges Road in Ganges, Pomodoro offers a huge range of pizzas, wraps, subs and soups. In addition to 15 different specialty pizzas, with Italian, whole wheat or wheat-free crusts, customers can build their own. There’s also a take-home-to-cook option. Pizza slices available daily are pepperoni, vegetarian, Hawaiian and cheese, along with a special of the day. See saltspringpizza. ca for a full menu. Everything at Pomodoro is made from scratch, using local ingredients as much as possible. The business employs three people. Lianne’s culinary experience has included running the Legion kitchen and being a rig camp chef, and she also worked at

Pomodoro under the previous owners. She has worked at a furniture polishing company, poured concrete, and delivered mail for 12 years. Her favourite thing about operating a business on Salt Spring, she says with a smile, is that she and her staff member Ingrid Vergalen “know everyone, and enjoy the personal harassment of customers.” As the co-owner of a new tugboat, she loves being out on the water when she is not at work. Pomodoro has existed on Salt Spring for some 35 years under different owners and names. It was initiated by Louis Renaud as Luigi’s Pizza. Jamie and Sherry Macdonnell were the long-time owners who named it Pomodoro.

ION ACCOUNTING & TAX SOLUTIONS • 17

Smart solutions found in cloud-based accounting Ion Accounting and Tax Solutions is a cloud-based accounting firm for forward-thinking business owners and individuals looking for efficiency and sustainability. James Martin, CPA, CA, Ion’s founder and CEO, opened the Salt Spring branch in September after Jean Elwell, CPA, CA accepted a new career opportunity in Vancouver and chose Martin to take her place. “Ion Accounting and Tax Solutions is honored that Jean has chosen our firm as her successor in her accounting practice, and we will do our absolute best to uphold the high standards of service, integrity, and accuracy that clients have grown accustomed to,” Martin says. Now a Chartered Professional Accountant, Martin started his professional career as a soldier with Princess Patricia’s Canadian

Light Infantry and later served as a reserve infantry officer with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. He articled with a large, global public accounting firm after moving into finance. “Every one of these career shifts has meant essentially starting from scratch with all of the intense training and steep learning curves that starting over entails, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The continued challenges have added fullness to my life and shaped me into the person that I am now,” Martin says. Ion offers full accounting services and is deeply committed to green business practices, to which its paperless, cloud-based business model is ideally suited; while realtime collaboration and reporting of data about their businesses helps clients make better business decisions in a timely manner. the fun place to be!

250.537.1402 The Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre features a 25-metre sixlane pool and hot tub and offers a variety of aquatic programs and activities including aquafit and Red Cross swimming lessons. Working out in the water is one of the most therapeutic activities you can participate in. Water aerobics builds cardio, strength and resistance with minimal impact for those suffering from muscle and joint pain or chronic illness.

IRENE GIBBS - “I enjoy the Aquafit class, I need it to keep myself active and fit. There is a good social aspect and I’ve made a lot of nice new friends that are really grateful this pool exists.” LAURIE STORR - “I go to Aquafit classes 3 times a week. Classes keep me mobile, flexible. It’s really great cardio first thing in the morning and I’m feeling good for the rest of the week.” PETER TOBY - “I don’t know what I’d do without it. Since it’s opened I come 3-4 days minimum and I just love it. It’s a little community in its own.”

ENERGIZER AQUAFIT: This class will challenge you to work hard in shallow or deep water, guided through a number of exercises which will help with your strength, flexibility and fitness. NOONERS AQUAFIT: For those looking for more strength and stretching, these exercises are designed to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving. AQUALITE: If you have had hip or knee trouble or have had heart problems, then this is the class for you. This low-intensity, cardio exercise class is perfect for those needing to focus on balance and core strength. FRIDAY NIGHT MADNESS: This is a fun time for the younger folks in our community to come out and enjoy the pool. Periodically special events will be planned for this time slot. ROTATING PROGRAMING: During these times the pool space may be shared with other groups. Example - Lessons, PE Classes, School Groups.

TAMARA WESLEY (STAFF) - “I like the people the most. It’s a great facility because everyone is really happy when they come and it’s a fun place to work.” JENNA LEONE - “I like the pool because I like swimming! I enjoy coming here because they are the most friendly, helpful people and it’s a great atmosphere.”

Hedgers are pleased to continue providing an alternative recycling and garbage service for the community Owned and operated by Laurie and Nancy Hedger, the business offers a recycling and garbage service with the drop-off area being next to the Country Grocer Plaza on Lower Ganges Road. The convenient location began over 25 years ago to provide an alternate service during island garbage issues for areas with no service and with the Hedgers’ bulldozing business receiving calls to dig private garbage pits. The continued island support makes their business unique as customers “escort their recycling and garbage to our site by all means of transport, from bicycles to Mercedes, and then thank us for providing an alternate service.” Laurie Hedger has been in business on Salt Spring for more than 50 years, involved in fishing, farming, logging and excavating. “lt is rewarding to finish my working years by providing a service that encourages recycling and protection of the environment. We all thank the community for their patronage.” Their recycling and garbage business employs three full-time and two part-time staff.

Spirited hobby becomes a business Salt Spring Shine at 194 Kitchen Road is among the island’s newest businesses. Owned and operated by Michael and Rie Papp, Salt Spring Shine opened in January 2017, after becoming licensed to operate in 2016. Making spirits was always a hobby for Michael, so it was natural to turn it into a business when the option of licensing became available. Salt Spring Shine makes vodka and gin in 750 ml and 375 ml quantities, with everything derived from 100 per cent B.C. honey, instead of the usual grain. The most memorable day of business to date was when Michael and Rie unpacked and set up their stills. They love that their business is home-based, which means no commuting is necessary! Their favourite thing to do on Salt Spring is going for hikes at places like Ruckle Park, Mount Tuam or Mount Maxwell, depending on the weather. Owner Troy Kaye

Over 30 Years Experience

Kapa Kai Glass is “the biggest little glass shop on Salt Spring Island.” Owner/operator Troy Kaye is a journeyman, transparent wall systems engineer (TWSE) glass worker who has over 30 years of experience working in Calgary and Salt Spring. He opened the doors to his shop in March of 2004. Since then, he has been busy keeping up with all of the new construction and renovations taking place on the island. Kapa Kai is the only glass company on the islands with registered interprovincial journeymen. Troy has confidence that they can handle any job: “If it has glass, I can do it,” he said. His range of services includes house windows, mirrors, shower doors, sunrooms, skylights and aluminum fabrication. No job is too big or too small. Because Troy enjoys what he does for a living, it is easy for him to produce high-quality workmanship, and he treats every job as if it were his own home. The only challenge of doing business on Salt Spring that Troy faces is relying on ferries to shuttle supplies and products on or off the island. He is pleased to be a part of the Salt Spring community and supports local junior golf. And, if you are wondering about the origin of the business’ name, Kapa Kai means “oceanfront” in Hawaiian. Kapa Kai Glass is located at 1531 Fulford-Ganges Road and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Owner Troy Kaye can be reached at 250-653-4148.

Landscape designer feeds passion for beauty Terra Luma Design founder Michael Howell has put 20 years into custom landscape design, creating ideal outdoor spaces that complement the existing environment and the unique architecture of clients’ built spaces. He has worked on a variety of local and international projects. His experience ranges from small-scale residential design to commercial projects, although residential projects are where his heart is. “I have always loved working with plants: landscaping and vegetable gardens. Landscape design fuels my passion for creating gorgeous places,” Howell says. Previous to his current career, Howell had a background in the culinary arts, working with some of Toronto’s best chefs. To this day

he draws on that experience to help design one of his specialities, outdoor kitchens. He’s also skilled at creating designs for the most appealing components, whether planting layouts, patios and decks, outdoor furnishings, swimming pools, hot tubs or landscape lighting. Listening to what his clients want is key to getting it right. Being on Salt Spring for five years has allowed Howell to do some of his favourite things: hiking, dog walks, gardening and getting in touch with nature. “I love working with the grandeur of this beautiful island and with fellow islanders,” he says. Howell has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and is a member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.
