4 • KAPA KAI GLASS
Kapa Kai known for great glass jobs
Owner Troy Kaye
Over 30 Years Experience
Kapa Kai Glass is “the biggest little glass shop on Salt Spring Island.” Owner/operator Troy Kaye is a journeyman, transparent wall systems engineer (TWSE), glass worker who has 30 years of experience working in Calgary and Salt Spring. He opened the doors to his shop in March of 2004. Since then, he has been busy keeping up with all of the new construction and renovations taking place on the island. Being the only glass company on the islands with registered interprovincial journeymen, Troy has confidence that Kapa Kai can handle any job: “If it has glass, I can do it,” he said. His range of services includes house windows, mirrors, shower doors, sunrooms, skylights and aluminum fabrication. No job is too big or too small. Because Troy enjoys what he does for a living, it is easy for him to produce high quality workmanship, and he treats every job as if it were his own home. The only challenge of doing business on Salt Spring that Troy faces is relying on ferries to shuttle supplies and products on or off the island. He is pleased to be a part of the Salt Spring community and supports local junior golf. And, if you are wondering about the origin of the business’ name, Kapa Kai means “oceanfront” in Hawaiian. Kapa Kai Glass is located at 1531 Fulford-Ganges Road and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Owner Troy Kaye can be reached at 250-653-4148.

AN ISLAND FAMILY SINCE 1861 WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY
Hedgers are pleased to continue providing an alternative recycling and garbage service for the community Owned and operated by Laurie and Nancy Hedger, the business offers a recycling and garbage service with the drop-off area being next to the Country Grocer Plaza on Lower Ganges Road. The convenient location began over 24 years ago to provide an alternate service during island garbage issues for areas with no service and with the Hedgers’ bulldozing business receiving calls to dig private garbage pits. The continued island support makes their business unique as customers “escort their recycling and garbage to our site by all means of transport, from bicycles to Mercedes, and then thank us for providing an alternate service.” Laurie Hedger has been in business on Salt Spring for more than 50 years, involved in fishing, farming, logging and excavating. “lt is rewarding to finish my working years by providing a service that encourages recycling and protection of the environment. We all thank the community for their patronage.” Their recycling and garbage business employs three full-time and two part-time staff.

Professional service with home appeal
Jean Elwell (right) and Catherine May
CPA Jean Elwell has run her home-based firm from Salt Spring for the past 15 years. She left a corporate job in Vancouver along with a large salary and expensive lifestyle to move to a rural community, and has never looked back. Elwell, with assistants Catherine May and Deborah Osmanich, provides all types of accounting services, including personal and corporate taxes, bookkeeping, and financial document preparation for year-end. She is qualified to do all assurance engagements including reviews and audits, and can give advice about accounting software and setting up systems. “I love numbers, puzzles, making things balance and helping clients find solutions,” Elwell says.
Elwell and her staff provide a unique accounting experience, giving their helpful, friendly advice at a reasonable price. Since 2004, the office has been attached to Elwell’s home on North Beach Road, ensuring a commute of no more than two seconds. That’s just one of the perks of the job; she also enjoys having a schedule with time for yoga breaks and the fact that Salt Spring is such a great place to raise kids. Hiking, dog walks and singing along at the Tree House are some favourite offwork pastimes. “There is no question that professionals pay a premium to come here, but I don’t have a single regret,” Elwell says. “There is no place I would rather have raised my boys and met such wonderful life-long friends.”

Outdoors lover guides adventure fun Looking for a fun and educational way to get out on the water for family members or friends? Salt Spring Adventure Company offers a full range of activities that make the most of the island’s beautiful outdoor playground. With opportunities like whale-watching trips, kayak tours and multi-day expeditions, paddle board rentals and even stand-up paddle board yoga lessons, business owner Yvonne Poirier makes sure there’s something to cater to everyone’s interest and comfort levels. The company also offers bike rentals, summer camps and customized group programs. “We are here to educate and allow clients to experience an adventure that suits them, and our main goal is to make sure everyone has fun!” Poirier says.
Poirier bought the business around four years ago, after managing the company founded by Sean Mulligan for a few years. One of her favourite things about being an outdoor educator and guide is being able to work with youth, particularly those who are experiencing nature for the first time. “I love to watch them as they reconnect and learn to love their time outside, learning and trying different things,” she explains. As someone who loves to spend her free time hiking, foraging, kayaking and boating, it’s clear Poirier is the perfect host to help others share those joys — and that she’s found her dream job. Getting to do it on Salt Spring is just the icing on the cake.

The Jim Pattison Auto Group continues Saunders Subaru legacy
The Saunders family with Jim Pattison and Bill Harbottle
Saunders Subaru has been a big part of life on Salt Spring Island for the past 36 years, with many islanders buying their vehicles at the Colwood dealership and having them serviced there too. The warm relationship is continuing since Bob and Norma Saunders sold their family business to The Jim Pattison Group. “A long-time decision was made easier by the respect and support we have been shown by The Jim Pattison Group. It is important to me and my family that
the success of Saunders Subaru lives on, and Jim Pattison and Bill Harbottle have shown that we share the same values regarding local community, customer service and quality, as well as a commitment to Subaru,” said Bob Saunders when the sale was announced this past summer. Harbottle, president of The Jim Pattison Auto Group, said one of the company’s goals has been to deliver a seamless transition for all Subaru owners. “We’ll continue the Saunders’
dedication to their customers and the community, and we look forward to maintaining and building on their tradition.” The Jim Pattison Auto Group’s relationship with Subaru is fairly new, starting in 2012; today, they are the largest Subaru retailer in Canada. Transitioning Saunders Subaru to The Jim Pattison Auto Group makes it their fifth Subaru location in Western Canada, and reflects the auto group’s belief in the Subaru brand.

FRASER’S THIMBLE FARMS • 13
Plant love shared at island nursery Fraser’s Thimble Farms is an island institution, growing native and exotic plants near the northern tip of the island for 44 1/2 years. Richard’s older brother founded this continuously run family business, now owned by Richard and Nancy. “I grew up in this adventure,” Fraser explains. “It was a family business before my wife and I took it over.” The Frasers love the challenge of growing rare and unusual plants and also grow the largest collection of native plants in the area. Their serene location near Southey Point operates as an old-fashioned nursery, meaning they grow everything they sell, including bedding plants, vegetable
starts, fruit and nut trees, other tree varieties, shrubs and perennials. “Our motto is ‘Grown by Islanders for Islanders,’” Fraser says. “We enjoy many different plants — our interests are constantly changing.” A memorable event for the farm was their first Hellebore Festival, which has now become an established tradition every February. “People were so excited to see all the plants in bloom, especially at a time of year when there isn’t much.” Having a loyal customer base who love plants as much as they do and talking with customers is a favourite part of the business. “We love talking to people about their gardens and sharing successes, failures and knowledge,” Fraser says.

Rental vehicles 7 days a week
Josselin Brain
The goal of Josselin Brain, General Manager of Salt Spring Car Rentals, is to make renting a vehicle on Salt Spring a convenient and easy experience. It’s a busy place to be, open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm — serving almost as many locals as tourists. Islanders requiring a van, pick-up truck, or car can take advantage of daily, weekly and monthly rates. They currently have 14 vehicles and 10 scooters. Scooters prove to be a very popular way for visitors to see the island and are available April thru September. Josselin says, “Many locals are realizing the variety of vehicles we offer to meet all sorts of needs. Groups often rent vans for off-island events, shopping trips, sports games etc. to cut down on ferry costs. Also, people wanting to upgrade from their ‘island car’ when going off island for business and personal trips. We also get many locals renting for family and friends visiting.” Salt Spring Car Rentals is also supplier for ICBC and other insurance companies, so locals no longer need to go off-island if they are in need of a replacement vehicle while theirs is being repaired. The company recently celebrated its eighth year in business and for the upcoming year hopes to continue making islanders aware of their market niche and personal and professional service. The local schools and ArtSpring have been supported by Salt Spring Car Rentals, who were also proud to donate vans for designated drivers for the Salt Spring Island Motorcycle Toy Run this past summer. Salt Spring Car Rentals is located at the Salt Spring Marina in Ganges Harbour, beside the marina office next to Moby’s Pub.
