Take a stroll Farmers were the original Saturday market vendors on Salt Spring. But since the 1970s the edge of Centennial Park has been used as a spot to sell various wares. Then in the 1990s a “Make it, Bake it or Grow it” stipulation was applied to market goods by the Capital Regional District, which owns the park, transforming it from a free-for-all vending area to a more regulated venture. Goods that fall outside of that criteria are also available in the “Ganges Alley” side of the market, offering the best of both worlds every Saturday from April through October.

Care for your pooches while you’re in the market
No dogs are allowed in the Salt Spring Saturday Market, but Buster and Fido can still have fun while their owners shop. That’s because the Salt Spring branch of the BC SPCA offers its Doggy Daycare each week in Centennial Park, from mid-May until the Labour Day weekend, and possibly later in the season if the weather is good. Dogs are given one-on-one treatment with a volunteer for up to two hours. Volunteers play with the dogs, pet them, give them treats and keep them company until their owners are finished at the market. Cost for the service is $10 per hour and all of the money goes back into the shelter. “We take in as many dogs as we have volunteers,” explains local shelter director Jerry Lewandowski. “Once one dog is picked up we can take
another. Depending on the time of day determines whether you can drop your dog off right away or be put on a wait list.” The busiest they’ve been was having between 12 and 15 dogs at a time. Setting up the daycare was done in response to the market not allowing dogs. “We don’t want dogs left in hot cars,” says Lewandowski. “There was no solution, so in Centennial Park we got permission to use the fenced-in area and basically provide a one-on-one dog-sitting service for anybody who wanted to go to the market but had pets.” Doggy Daycare has run in the park since 2012. Dogs are otherwise not allowed in Centennial Park, even outside the market area.

Salt Spring Wild brings new meaning to “terroir”

The term “terroir” is well known in the world of wine. At its most basic, it describes a product (usually wine) that takes on characteristics of the land where that product is made. It is the local varieties, soil quality, wind, water and sunlight that can make such big changes in foods that are essentially identical. While Salt Spring Island is known for its wineries, other craft alcohol producers are taking the idea of terroir to a new level. Gerda Lattey and Mike Lachelt are the owners of Salt Spring Wild Cider. They use a combination of apples grown on their

can be a truly local drink. Where there is typically only one kind of barley or wheat, apples come in almost endless varieties. Since they rarely come true from seed, a new apple tree will often produce a fruit that is completely different than anything else available. The only way to reliably reproduce a certain kind of apple is to graft it from an existing tree. “You think you bite into an apple and you don’t understand that it would also have a fermenting profile. You might taste it and the fermenting profile would be totally different. Maybe it would taste tart and acidic, but when it’s

fermented it would have a really earthy profile,” Lattey says. “Every apple basically has its own fermenting profile.” When you explore it a bit further, terroir can start to mean more than just the physical effect the land has on the food. To fully understand the relationship between the locale and the product, a producer has to combine local knowledge and community identity. Terroir has become a big part of the locavore movement, but it describes more than just a product made in a certain part of the world. It describes the community that has made that product possible. Lattey says there are around 450 varieties of apples on Salt Spring Island. Salt Spring Wild’s ciders are all blends, some using up to 30 different apples. The island used to be the biggest apple producer in British Columbia, according to Lattey and Lachelt, having more trees than people at one point in the early 20th century. Even if many of those orchards are not commercially viable, the trees that were planted are still around. Lattey and Lachelt have found a way to use the large variety of fruit available on the island and to keep it in the community. GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD

SPCA doggie daycare volunteers make sure dogs are safe and happy while their owners shop the Saturday Market.
Now in our sixth year, we have prevented over 2,000 dogs from being left in hot cars. Together, we have raised nearly $30,000 for our Salt Spring SPCA. Our doggie daycare is one-on-one, on-leash service. We aim to help visitors enjoy the market while providing a fun, safe, and low-stress experience for their pooch.
We always need more volunteers for a minimum two-hour shift on any Saturday. More volunteers mean more dogs are helped and that really makes a difference in our community!

The cidery sends picking crews out to pick apples that would otherwise be left rotting on the ground. Landowners get a cheque from the cidery in the fall, putting money back into the local economy. “We’re creating a different kind of economy for passive farming,” Lattey says. People are noticing the local focus. Many of their customers are from the island, and they make the cidery part of their weekly market trip. “This kind of craft cider we’re making is so new in British Columbia and Canada that it’s something different,” Lattey says, adding that being a part of the Saturday market lets them reach a clientele that is looking for quality ingredients and processes. “If all of your products are coming from some place in China or the United States, then you’re getting a certain type of that product and no others,” Lachelt agreed. “Why should that be the case?” Most days, the line-up at their market stall is one of the longest. After sampling, many people buy a bottle and pair it with other fresh local products available at the market. “I think that it’s neat to be highlighted within that context,” Lattey says. “It makes it special. The Salt Spring Market is a uniquely Salt Spring thing.” Lattey and Lachelt have been able to combine an age-old product with mod-

ern practices while respecting the distinct nature of the local area. While the term “terroir” generally means that the land has had an effect on the product, it can also be interpreted to mean more than that. Terroir is also the historical and communal aspects of the product. It is the stewardship of the land and the honesty of the people making the product. The Saturday market is where the true flavour of Salt Spring comes out.

of MAGIC Sally Sunshine Fairy Garden brings joy to children at the market By MARC KITTERINGHAM

Tucked away in a corner of the Saturday Market in the Park, there is a little bit of free magic. A village of tiny hand-built fairy homes welcomes children and invites them to come play. A brightly coloured sign proclaims that “Magic is Everywhere to Share!� The village is free for kids to enjoy, and is a place for them to imagine, share and learn. The Sally Sunshine Fairy Garden was created by Sarah Dawn Morris as a tribute to beloved Salt Springer Sally Sunshine.

Morris and her daughter built the fairy garden using found objects, items from nature and recycled toys. Sally was an important member of the community who had an impact on everyone she met. Her door was open to anyone and many people felt like she was family. “She was famous for her hugs and hugged everyone within arm’s reach,” Morris says. “She did beautiful colourful magical artworks and had twinkling blue eyes.” Sally passed away in October 2016. Morris, who was unable to attend Sally’s memorial service, wanted to do something to remember her friend. “I knew Sally growing up on Salty as a dancing loving hippie mamma,” Morris says. “I knew I had to create the Sally Sunshine Fairy Garden. I wanted it to be free for everyone to stumble upon and play with. I wanted to see kids sharing because nobody owned it . . . sort of like the love and magic Sally shared so freely.” Morris was inspired by a family in Kansas who built a gnome village in the forest behind their house. She realized that she could do something similar to honour her friend. Morris is an artist who works with any medium she can get her hands on. She runs the Tribe 11:11 stall in the market on Saturdays and sets up the fairy garden behind her stall. Having been a vendor in the market for 30 years, Morris had the perfect venue for her new project.

They started with one small piece, eventually building up a large collection of fairy homes, buildings and even a fairy boat. The garden is set up behind the market stalls on the grass. People are free to come and go, to play with the toys and to experience a bit of the magic. “The point was to put it out there and have it speak for itself,” Morris says. Her favourite part of the garden is “hearing little children say Sally Sunshine’s name when they read the sign and realize they can play with the magical fairy garden . . . it belongs to nobody but everybody.” Although Morris brings the fairy garden to the market every week, she does not consider it hers. Rather, it is something for everyone to enjoy.

Parents sit nearby as their children wander over. The toys sitting under the umbrella are whimsical, like nothing they’ve ever seen before. A little girl reaches into one of the fairy houses and pulls out a tiny treasure chest. Her eyes light up as she opens it, and she smiles. There’s nothing inside, but she can pretend. To her, there is a little bit of magic.
