From the sea The Salt Spring Saturday Market in the Park, run by the island’s Parks and Recreation Commission, sets up in Centennial Park and an adjacent parking lot in the bustling village of Ganges every week from April through October. The location also provides relaxing views of the harbour and marine life just steps away on the boardwalk and nearby beach area. But if you keep your eyes open while perusing the wares of market booths, you’ll also find some take-home souvenirs from the salty sea. Above: A fish and crab from Salish Sea Creatures. Kaleigh Barton can still taste the rich sense of accomplishment of her first crop. The radishes were planted in a grassy field beneath the SkyTrain line near her Vancouver home and the tomatoes grew in a suitcase on her front porch. “The harvest was small but satisfying,” she said. Barton has since completed a degree in fibre arts and discovered more about wool and sheep production by volunteering on an organic farm. Those early years laid a foundation for Heavenly Roots Farm, a venture she and her partner Ben Corno launched on parcels of leased land in the Burgoyne Valley and along Rainbow Road several years ago. The young farmers are regulars at Salt Spring’s Saturday and Tuesday markets and began to provide regular shipments of fresh produce to local subscribers through their Community Supported Agriculture initiative in 2015. Barton exemplifies a growing national trend in agriculture. More and more young, educated women are leaving cities behind to stake their claim on a piece of land. According to census data collected in 2011, just under 30 per cent of Canadian farmers are women. Research conducted through the University of Manitoba suggests that number is on the rise. In some places, such as Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, women comprise the majority of new farmers.

Initially attracted to the rural landscape’s natural beauty, Barton said she finds new sources of inspiration every day she’s out on the land. “Now the farm is a place for me to exercise my creativity, to gain confidence, to do experiments and complete important tasks,” she said. “I’ve become more of an active force on our piece of land, and I get very excited to see the changes that my work has made.” The sense of hard work and accomplishment is very familiar to Peri Lavender, part-owner of the Salt Spring Apple Company. Like Barton, Lavender admits to not knowing too much about farming or apple cultivation when she and partner Brian Webster ventured into agriculture in 2010. Since that first year, Lavender has learned how to care for trees, service farm equipment, deal with

irrigation challenges and contend with pests. “It requires a little biology, some mechanics and a lot of physics and math,” she said. “And I’ve completely lost my aversion to bugs. It’s nothing for me to squish tent caterpillars or aphids with my bare hands without a second thought. That’s a huge shift for me.” Lavender’s orchard has grown to include more than 3,000 trees and a nursery with about 3,500 saplings. The farm produces 333 varietals, all of which are certified

organic. What’s available from the farm depends largely on the time of year. Summer market fare includes apple-baked goods like fritters, brownies and breakfast cookies, all of which are cooked fresh before heading to market. “There is a sense of pride that comes from all that we have managed to accomplish in the short time that we have been doing this,” she said. “There is also a connection to my community as I see friends and neighbours when they frequent the market and our farm stand to purchase the food that we are growing.” As she looks to the orchard’s future, which includes plans to make cider from some of the farm’s unique apples, Lavender appreciates that few jobs are more interesting, challenging and life-giving. Marie Laucks, co-owner of Laughing Apple Farm on Beddis Road, suggests that women thinking about life on the farm should get comfortable with tools. Before she and her husband Brian Swanson moved to Salt Spring in 2003, Laucks had no formal training in the use of drills, saws and farm machinery. Shop courses were something she never took as a girl growing up in the United States. Migrating from their academic lives at a university in Seattle, the couple set out to restore a 160-acre homestead property that was in dire need of some TLC. In the early years, she and Swanson would drive up for the weekend to tend to the property, sometimes working through the night in the glow of headlights shining into a rainy field. “The women’s jobs aren’t only to do the canning,” she said. “We rebuilt the whole thing.” Laughing Apple is well known for apple juice, fresh berries and vegetables sold from local markets and its Beddis Road farm stand. Things aren’t always so intense since most of the grunt work to GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD

Farm life offers a constant reminder that a single person can’t do everything. get the homestead working again is behind her, but Laucks said the past 13 years have taught her a wealth of new skills and given her new determination. Farm life offers a constant reminder that a single person can’t do everything. Less clear gender roles open new possibilities for everyone on the farm to focus on their strengths while conquerring new challenges. As more women step up to mow down the ‘grass ceiling’ that’s dictated traditional roles on the family farm, barriers are dropping and new collaborative processes are formed. No longer confined to ringing the dinner gong, women have assisted the evolution of a new farming reality, one that focusses on value-added products, farm tourism and organics. Bree Eagle grew up on Salt Spring’s Bright Farm before heading off to university in California. She returned to the island, where she became reacquainted with the land and her love of agriculture. These days she calls herself a sharecropper, harvesting berries, fruits and wild edibles from properties across the island for use in her colourful line of artisan vinegars. Before our interview this spring, she’d just finished harvesting about 10 kilograms of lemon balm. Other varieties are made from figs, plums, apples and blackberries, to name just a few. Eagle oversees every aspect of the operation, from the initial idea and harvest to production and marketing. It’s hard work, but few experiences are more empowering than crafting a business dedicated to healthy living and creating products from scratch. Eagle takes inspiration from the many other women of all ages on the island who share her passion and have taken it upon themselves to feel the dirt beneath their fingernails. saturday market guide

Something that’s hard to miss at the Salt Spring Saturday Market is the sights and scents of flowers. They burst out from milk cartons, buckets and vases of all shapes and sizes. They’re used to make bodycare products and jewellery, and they’re represented in clothing and artwork. Photographer Jen MacLellan captured images of some of the flowers available to take home or simply admire during a market stroll.
