LETTER from the Chair More and more, we are learning about the immense health benefits of recreation and regular physical activity. Salt Spring Island PARC’s team of staff and volunteer commissioners are dedicated in supporting the well-being of the community. Some facts: Recreational activities can provide positive benefits related to peer influence, familial interaction, academic performance and other lifestyle behaviours of at risk youth. For adults, it allows daily tasks to be accomplished with greater ease and comfort and with less fatigue, stress and helps you maintain and achieve a healthy body weight and it improves one’s outlook on life. For older adults, physical activity reduces the rate of bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Regular physical activity also maintains strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, and can help reduce the risk of falls. Thanks to increasing participation, we continue to expand our program offerings for adults and children. With summer just a few months away, we will focus on getting kids active through a variety of summer camps: Camp Colossal, H2O Adventure Camp, preschool mini-camp and off-island adventures. We are happy to have the restored Portlock Park portable available again for arts, crafts and indoor learning on rainy days. Everyone in the community—regardless of income—should be able to enjoy recreational activities that support their health. We strive to provide affordable programs and services for Salt Spring. The Leisure Economic Access Policy (LEAP) assists individuals and families. To qualify, the combined gross household income must be at or below Statistics Canada’s Low Income Thresholds for 2014. Please visit the PARC office to pick up a 2016 LEAP application. Thank you for your continuing support and participation in active living.

Dogs on Trails Dogs are welcome on trails within the PARC system. When on the trail system, dogs need to be under control and on the trail at all times. “Under Control” means that your dog is within your direct eyesight and returns to you immediately when called. If your dog is young, has a mind of its own, or you are in a high use area, your dog should be on a leash. Owners must always carry a leash. Our parks and trails are home to many species of animals and wild plants. Please do not let your dog run off the trail, dig, or chase wildlife. Although 4

your dog’s curiosity may seem harmless, it can have serious consequences for wild creatures that need to conserve their energy for feeding, breeding and nesting. Chasing or harassing wildlife is prohibited under the CRD Parks Bylaw and the BC Wildlife Act. Please bring your plastic bags to pick up after your dog, and take them with you to dispose of at home. Dog feces left on or near the trail are a hazard for wildlife, other visitors and PARC staff. Doggie bags are provided in Duck Creek Park and Mouat Park. Be respectful of others, be in control of your dog(s) at all times, and always clean up and pack it out. WEDNESDAY APRIL 13, 2016 | GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD

Water Fitness Classes

It is a proven fact that exercising in water is a great way to increase the resistance on your body as you move, yet it’s easy on the joints since the bounce takes a lot of the weight. There is also an increase in the calories burned because your body is losing heat while in the water. Add these factors onto a great workout directed by one of our certified instructors and you will feel the difference right away. Rainbow Road Indoor Pool offers a selection of aquafit classes to suit everyone’s needs.

Energizer

This fun and upbeat class will challenge you to work hard in shallow or deep water. The instructor will guide you through a number of exercises which will help with your strength, flexibility and fitness.

Aqualite Just like the name says……. gentle, low-intensity exercise. Great if you are just starting out, have joint problems, or are recovering from an injury. Nooners

Less intense than the morning Energizer session, this class is specifically for those looking for more strength and stretching. An instructor leads the group through a number of exercises designed to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving.

Swimming Lessons The Rainbow Road pool offers swimming lessons for all ages and stages. Our Preschool program starts at age 3 and focuses mainly on making the swimmer water safe. Can they jump into the pool and get themselves back to the edge safely? Once that is accomplished then we focus on proper strokes and water skills. The Red Cross Swim Kids Program is directed towards swimmers 6 years and older. This program has the same structure as our Preschool Program but is better suited for an older swimmer. We also have classes for adults who would like to improve their strokes so they can enjoy the water more and we have classes specifically aimed at those folks who never learned to swim as a child.

10 lessons per set (unless otherwise noted) (Sets with fewer lessons are prorated) $57.00 - 10 x ½ hour lessons $70.00 - 10 x ¾ hour lessons Set 1 July 4 – 15 Set 2 July 18 – 29 Set 3 August 1 – 12 Set 4 August 15 - 26 Private Lessons

SPCA Doggie Daycare at Salt Spring Saturday Market in the Park Since the summer of 2012, the local SPCA has operated a oneon-one dog daycare service in Centennial Park during the Saturday Market from May long weekend through Labour Day. This year, we open our fifth year on May 21, 2016. In the five years since doggie daycare took over the corner space by the cenotaph in Centennial Park, close to 2,000 dogs have been loved, patted, and played with by volunteers who give their time freely to ensure market visitors have an option to park their pooch. The service costs $10/hour per dog and is an important fundraiser for the local SPCA. Funds raised go towards assisting the local branch with its operating costs. Dogs who play well with humans and other dogs are welcome to show up for this first-come, first-served dog sitting service. A brief discussion about your dog’s needs with SPCA staff prior to intake helps us match up with a dog handler. We will keep your pooch comfortable and well-cared for in the shady area of the park while you shop in our community market and enjoy Ganges. Contact saltspring@spca.bc.ca for more information. Sorry, no reservations.
