ADAPTABLE TALENT Artist Pouran Jinchi's Remarkable Flexibility The Third Line recently exhibited a solo presentation by New York-based Iranian artist Pouran Jinchi. The solo presentation at a booth at the recent Abu Dhabi Art event exhibited new and recent works by Jinchi, including works on paper, hammered marks on copper, permanent ink markers on plexiglas and scratched impressions on graphite paper. A testament to the artist’s continued exploration of her art, the works explore the liminal space between the legible and the abstract within the realm of the textual. Her engagement with myriad media to deconstruct the textual is evidenced by the variety of forms her work has taken, whilst all stemming from the same point. ABU DHABI ART UNVEILS LARGESCALE INSTALLATIONS Giant Pieces Capture the Attention Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority unveiled two largescale installations ahead of Abu Dhabi Art’s public opening which took place on Wednesday 18th November 2015. Helping bring the Abu Dhabi Art experience to life, Hassan Sharif’s Copper and Farhad Moshiri’s Shukran form part of Abu Dhabi Art’s Beyond program. The Abu Dhabi Art Public Art program, Beyond, presents large-scale installations which engage with public spaces. Selected art works will be exhibited throughout the city for a period of six months, creating a contemporary canvas of artwork within the urban landscape. This year’s theme is Bliss and is curated by Fabrice Bousteau. Beyond includes a further 20 artworks that will be unveiled within Manarat Al Saadiyat, Warehouse 421, and Nation Towers, and showcasing the works of artists such as Martin Creed, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Shaikha Al Mazrou, Jack Pierson and Pipilotti Rist. www.abudhabiart.ae

SERMIN KARDESTUNCER A Solo Exhibition: Organic Wholeness Sermin Kardestuncer’s upcoming solo exhibition at Dubai’s XVA Gallery will showcase the Turkish born, New Yorkbased artist’s most recent works. Kardestuncer’s work is organic in nature and displays loyalty to proportion and control. She is sensitive to the material she uses, and can transform the most common into the most unique. The exhibition will include sculpture, work on rice and silk paper, and fabric. The intricate and repeated patterns throughout the body of work bring a sense of wholeness and an insight on the inner workings of Kardestuncer’s thought process. The hand-stitched works are methodical and sensitive. The slow process of making the works allows the viewer to identify with Kardestuncer’s faith in possibility and her respect for tradition. Kardestuncer has exhibited at numerous institutions including The Bronx Museum of the Arts, MoMA/PS1, Art in General, Brooklyn Museum, as well as the Davidson Visual Arts Center and has won numerous international awards. GLITZ AND GLAMOUR Street Art Comes to the Four Points The Z Gallery is bringing Mr. Fahrenheit, one of London’s cutting edge street artists, to Dubai this autumn. “Diamond and Pearls” is a street art exhibition up at the Z Gallery at Four Points by Sheraton Sheikh Zayed Road. Born in Berlin, Germany, the city with the biggest canvas in Europe, Mr. Fahrenheit was the first who sprayed the Berlin Wall in one night from both sides. Featured in many street art books and magazines he decided to bring parts of his artwork to the city and their people he loves, to Dubai. “And now it is time to show some of these pieces in Dubai, thrilling, glamorous and exciting center in the Middle East” he said. CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE UAE Spreading the Word on Emirati Artists The Farjam Foundation, in its quest to discover, harness and bring awareness about regional talent, is delighted to dedicate a special exhibition entitled ’1971 - Contemporary Art from The UAE’ to showcase the works of established and emerging Emirati artists. The exhibition epitomizes the embodiment of the artists’ creative skills and their extraordinary harmonious relationship with their homeland. It delves into the innumerable nuances of the deep culture, the ever-changing landscape, and the rich history of the UAE. The year 1971 signifies a turning point in the UAE’s history with the unification of the seven independent emirates. The Farjam Foundation is of the view that it is the eternal bond formed by this unification that has since been a vehicle for the phenomenal rise of Emirati talent. The exhibition coincides with the UAE National Day and is a befitting tribute to UAE artists. Rise Above Lebanon is the second book by Lebanese photographer Christian Ghammachi, following his awardwinning publication titled “19 Years Later”. ASHKAN BAGHESTANI Sotheby’s Arab and Iranian Art Specialist The youngest member of Sotheby’s Middle East Department, Ashakan Baghestani is an expert in the field of Iranian art. With the upcoming sale, 20th Century Art - A Different Perspective, we spoke to Baghestani about his experience and hopes for the future. Being the youngest art specialist in Sotheby’s Middle East Department, how do you live up to the expectation and expertise of Sotheby’s, one of the oldest auction houses in the world? I must say the responsibilities are big but the excitement and motivation to bring in the best works with the most thorough expertise is greater than the challenge. Sotheby’s is the best art platform to evolve in – you meet the most fascinating academics, curators, collectors and artists, that circle of art lovers is a constant learning curve and your passion grows more and more every year – the knowledge flows both ways, you teach and you learn. My research has to be constant and therefore requires dedication and focus. The thrill of meeting collectors, and entering fascinating public and private collections is a rare opportunity. The travelling show in Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Art Fair have both recently concluded, what were the highlights, in your opinion? Our travelling exhibition in Dubai was a great success, our key collectors joined our team for a very special night during the Al Serkal opening. We brought 16 museum-quality works to Dubai, from North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and Iran. It was important for us to display these works in Dubai during the most important art week alongside the Dubai Fair in March. The Abu Dhabi fair was very vibrant, some galleries had extremely fresh-to-the-market works, especially Le Violon Bleu with their Ecole de Tunis show and Agial Gallery with their strong focus on the Lebanese modernists. I also loved the gigantic installation by Iranian artist Farhad Moshiri called “Shukkran” by Third Line Gallery. The fair is always very tightly curated and, I believe, appeals to a crowd that might otherwise be intimidated by larger fairs. How would you describe the upcoming December auction in London? The team and I are very excited to present this sale to our worldwide collector base. The sale was very exciting to put together and we brainstormed this

summer to have an interesting approach to it, I think we’ve achieved that. This ‘20th Century Art – A Different Perspective’ is a new project we launched last year. The sale spotlights modern art from across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Iran and Turkey. This year’s edition features a group of outstanding artists from our region – the innovators and influencers of their respective countries, stretching from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. We’ve focused on different areas and eras of modernism within the Middle East, Iran and Turkey, and, in particular, on abstract art. It’s instructive to see how works by these artists relate aesthetically to the wider international art scene. Compared to others, this is relatively young market, so it’s very vibrant, and there’s a real thirst from collectors to discover more about these artists. What is exciting about the sale? One of the most exciting aspects of this sale is the focus on abstract modernism in the Middle East. We worked closely with academics and collectors to try and understand if there was – in the 50s to the 70s – a common abstract modernist language throughout the region. The sale has a dedicated section that focuses on that theme only, with artists such as Fahrelnissa Zeid, Mubin Orhon, Behjat Sadr, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Sonia Balassanian, Helen Khal, among many others. The majority of Middle Eastern works are fresh to the market, vibrant, and museum quality, which will make them very appealing to a broad collector base. The sale is also very well priced, which is key in enticing a younger collector base. What are your favorite pieces from the art auction and why? Behjat Sadr. Sadr is the pioneering figure in abstract Iranian art from the 50s who continuously searched for new and innovative techniques at a time where artists were looking at other directors within Iran. She is one of those rare artists who has her distinct own visual language. The past year, between a show at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris named Iran-Unedited, a monograph on her oeuvre and a beautiful and fascinating documentary by acclaimed director Mitra Farahani, she is really one of the most intriguing and sadly undervalued artists from our beloved region. Paul Guiragossian. Guiragossian was one of the leading artists of the modern Lebanese art,

known for his instantly recognizable abstract figures. This painting is a real gem, given its strong provenance and also the beautiful story behind it. In the late 60s, Guiragossian had many shows in European galleries where he would often send his paintings. The father of the current owner worked at Beirut airport for TWA and would take care of the shipping for the artist, so they became close friends. As a testimony of their friendship, Guiragossian gifted this work to him. The painting is also very rare. Guiragossian only painted three works from this traditional rural village of Lebanon; the two others are in important Swiss collections. This work is a very important work in the artist’s evolution as it marks an ambiguous shift from his figurative to the abstract period. How will the auction interest the public? I think the abstract angle will be fascinating for many collectors and academics, as very little has been written on the subject. We also organized a talk on the 29th of November at Sotheby’s with respected academics and collectors around the theme of abstract modernism in the Middle East. In the years to come, how do you envision the evolution of modern art and Iranian art in the Middle East? The focus of the past few years has been on modernism. Collectors and institutions are beginning to realize the importance of modern artists and their influence on the new generation but mainly their historical footprint of the visual language that is relevant to each region of the Arab world, Iran and Turkey. The Iranian market is currently receiving a lot of attention from western institutions. The modernists are being showcased in many international shows (Parviz Tanavoli at the Wessley, Bahman Mohassess and Behjat Sadr at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and MAXXI in Rome). The Farideh Lashai foundation just opened in Tehran with a major show alongside major Post War American works. I think we will see the market for Iranian modern art grow steadily in the next few years, as western collectors gain greater understanding of these Iranian modernists. With more and more foundations and publications about that era, institutions will also play a major role in creating a strong, in-depth and educational platform for the new generation and established collectors.

FORMS OF LEAD Salavat Fidai SALAVAT FIDAI’S ARTISTIC OUTPUT IS, QUITE SIMPLY, AMAZING. Incredibly, Fidai’s work involves crafting microsculptures from the lead of a pencil to create characters or images that inspire and captivate the imagination. Fidai’s process is remarkably straightforward, the artist takes a 4x magnifying glass, a small craft knife and a pencil and starts to carve. Fidai works in pencils, literally, oils and acrylic and the various media each offer a different perspective, “The concept for my paintings or sculptures start to take form while I’m asleep. The next day I am looking for photos and video material, then I make sketches or layouts. When I work with oil on canvas, it’s more emotional and expressive. If I paint acrylic on seeds, it’s hard work and detail oriented. When I carve sculptures from pencils, it’s more meditative,” said the artist. The inspiration for many of his works is clear to see, Fidai is a lover of cartoons and film and has created a range of sculptures featuring Batman, Darth Vader and more. “I remember I tried Darth Vader seven times and it was just OK. Some of Vader’s heads broke during the carving, it took so many tries to get it to the point where I liked it, and now I love it...” Vader aside, Fidai normally takes six to eight hours to create a single sculpture, a figure that seems small given the detail in each piece. Created with a simple No. 2 Jumbo pencil, Fidai’s work is incredible, so simple, yet it clearly takes an immense amount of skill, and a steady hand.

She employs it time and again because its “simplicity obscures the complex and uniquely personal relationship that each viewer has to an idea of ‘home’,” as she puts it. If you’re part of the Instagram generation, you may not instantly recognize the telephone pole emblem, however. It is a universal yet quickly fading icon of communication that symbolizes emotional connection, formality, privacy, disconnection and alienation, according to the Manhattan based artist. In the captivating artworks, Withers paints houses that tilt, sway or huddle together as if fearful of existing in an unstable environment. VAIL, USA Long famed as the destination of choice for the great and good of America and beyond, Vail is one of the world’s premier ski resorts. Set in the majestic mountains of Colorado, Vail Ski Resort was founded in 1962 and continues to hold pride of place among US resorts. We are on a roller-coaster, and the sky is the limit (but who knows, maybe that will be surpassed here one day!) Does your love of real estate cross over into your personal life? You seem so passionate about it. I get to meet some of the most successful people in the world, and they inspire me to work harder so I can reach my goals. I love what I do so much, and

What do you think the future holds for Dubai? In ten years time, I envision Dubai as one of the top cities in the world that has benchmarked itself in numerous industries. It will be a place that other major cities follow.

What makes a great real estate agent? That’s simple, care about your client. Be willing to do whatever it takes to assist them and make them feel like family. They don’t lack money, they lack time, and so give them more time by spearheading every need they have. Change that light bulb, buy them that clothes dryer, book that reservation, and welcome them home with a bouquet of flowers and a box of sweets. They’ll never consider anyone else, and they will refer you to everybody else as though you were their own child. What feedback do you get from clients? They think of me as family. Whenever I’m with a client, I just remember that no matter how much money or fame they have, they are still human beings with similar needs and wants. I would like to be remembered as an agent that delivered on his promises, and beyond. What is it about Dubai that you love? You seem so engaged I love a number of things. You’ve got unlimited sunshine, world-class venues, a multicultural community and you’re right in the middle of everything in geographic terms. There are expats here from all over the world and we’re all here for the same reasons. In Dubai, you can create for yourself a lifestyle that is hard to attain anywhere else in the world, it’s easy and it’s addictive... I love this city.

Other than Dubai, what real estate destinations interest you? Why? And would you consider tapping and relocating to those destinations? I’m a big fan of the major hubs such as New York, Miami, London, and Hong Kong; each one is unique. Of course coming from Canada, I have a local advantage with cities such as Toronto and Vancouver. Still, Dubai is home, and with its central location, I can easily access any of these within a day. If not a real estate agent, what would you be and why? To be honest, I’ve been in several fields, from education, hospitality, to trade, and they have all benefited my current role in one form or another. So I can say been there, done that, and now I love what I do. I’m not going anywhere! Tell us something about your dream property? Where would it be? How would life be there? What makes it so interesting to explore? My dream property does not exist, yet! I want to live on the golf course, with beachfront access, a lovely garden with plenty of fruit trees and 10 minutes away from the center (need to see the NYE fireworks!) And since I’m shooting for the moon, throw in a bird sanctuary nearby. Let me know and I’ll have a deposit ready in the morning. When you’re not touring the city with clients, what do you get up to? I’m happy, I think I’m personable, and I’m devoted to my goals. My life revolves around networking, eat, network, work, network, workout, network, play, network, repeat.
