SNEEK PEAK: UPCOMING SOTHEBY'S EXHIBITION 20th Century Art / Middle East A vibrant and exciting international platform for modern and contemporary arts from North Africa, Turkey, the Middle East and Iran in London, Sotheby’s 20th Century Art / Middle East auction will take place on 25 April in London. The auction will prominently feature seminal works by important female artists from Fahrelnissa Zeid and Madiha Omar to Samia Halaby and Monir Farmanfarmaian. The sale will also comprise of celebrated artists with a strong institutional presence, led by a museum-quality work by world-renowned modern master Bahman Mohasess. One of the most influential female Turkish artists, Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid’s dynamic works embody a fusion of influences from Islamic, Byzantine, Arab and Persian art combined with stylistic elements from post-war Europe such as Fauvism and Cubism. Best known for her large-scale abstract paintings, Towards a Sky is the second largest of her works to appear at auction and its sheer size achieves a kind of painterly tour de force. Her seminal masterpiece, Towards a Sky was painted in 1953 in London while Zeid was living there with her husband H.R. Prince Emir bin Zeid – who was assigned to the UK as the first Iraqi ambassador. The work was exhibited at a groundbreaking solo show at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London – whose opening was attended by the Queen of England - making Zeid one of the first and few female artists to exhibit there. The kaleidoscopic canvas was so tall that the ceiling height at the ICA was not sufficient, and one third of the painting was rolled up. Following this, Towards a Sky received huge publicity within London’s art scene and is now appearing on the market for the first time since it was last seen at Lord’s Gallery in 1957. Zeid kept a photograph of this painting in a frame at her bedside until she passed away in 1991.

Bahman Mohasses, Requiem Omnibus (Death of Martin Luther King) 1968 (est. £300,000 - 400,000) The sale presents a rare museum-quality work by painter and poet Bahman Mohasses, a pioneer in the Iranian art world. One of the greatest masters of Iran’s modern era, Mohasses’ works took inspiration from artists including Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore and Alberto Giacometti – alongside myriad influences from theatre, mythology, tragic heroes and cinema – forging a unique and distinctive path. However, he felt continually restricted by the cultural constraints of the Iranian mainstream – resulting in a proliferation of isolated characters depicted in his works. Tortured and anguished, his half-beast, half-mythological creatures speak of a deeply thoughtful and pained soul. In his surrealist style combined with a sophisticated palette of Tuscan tones, he depicts a form of aesthetic that was removed from beauty but intimate with existential questions. Mahmoud Saïd, Portrait de Madame Batanouni Bey, 1923 (£150,000 - 250,000) Appearing on the market for the first time since it was painted for relatives of the artist, the exquisite Portrait de Madame Batanouni Bey has never previously been exhibited or published. As one of the fathers of the Egyptian modern art movement, Saïd is able to transport the viewer back in time. Born into an aristocratic Alexandrian family – the son of Mohammed Pasha Saïd, Egypt’s Prime Minister during the reign of King Faud I – and having trained as a lawyer, his rich painting style encapsulates the golden era of glamour pre-dating the 1952 revolution. The sitter here is a relative of Saïd, who often painted portraits of his family members. One of the leaders of the humanitarian organisation Red Crescent in Egypt, Madame Ferdous – whose name means ‘Paradise’ in Arabic – was a pioneering and independent woman. Saïd considered women to be a source of existential power, as wives, as mothers and as revolutionaries; as such, he represented them with reverence as symbols of Egypt's national identity.

Monir Farmanfarmaian, Triangle of Hope, 2008

Monir Farmanfarmaian, Triangle of Hope, 2008 (est. £100,000 - 120,000) Monir Farmanfarmaian’s timeless yet contemporary works have long been met with international acclaim, most recently with her recent retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2015. Farmanfarmain’s oeuvre brings together the decorative elements of Iranian traditional craft with Western abstraction – in playful yet poignant homage to Islamic geometry and the ancient roots of Iranian culture. Works from The Schernig Collection Between the years of 1985 and 1990, German art critic Ursula Schernig ran the Hassan Ragab Art Gallery in Cairo, located in a houseboat on the Nile. During this time, Schernig was instrumental in ensuring the artistic legacies of a number of Egypt’s leading artists – looking after their nearly forgotten estates – including Fouad Kamel, Saïd Al-Adawi and Abdul Hadi El-Gazzar. Alongside this pursuit, she organised major exhibitions for pioneering living artists and devoted herself to finding and promoting rural artists from the Egyptian countryside, including Anna Boghiguian and Hassan el Shark. Parallel to her endeavours at the Ragab gallery, Ursula and her husband Gerhard created an outstanding art collection, with an unwavering commitment to important Egyptian paintings. This sale will offer eight works that span from the 1920s – 80s in Egypt, led by five paintings by Fouad Kamel and an auction debut for Amy Nimr.

Arts of the Islamic World An Ottoman silk satin and metal-thread brocade panel, Turkey

With a focus on artistic production under Islamic patronage, Sotheby’s Arts of the Islamic World auction in London on 26 April covers more than a thousand years of artwork spanning multiple continents – including works from prestigious collections.

A large Ottoman silk and metal-thread brocade (Kemha), Turkey, late 16th/17th century (est. £40,000 - 60,000) An Ottoman silk and metal-thread brocade panel, Turkey, circa 1600 (est. £30,000 - 50,000) One of the most renowned collecting families of the 19th century, the affluent Benaki Salvago family were an important part of the Greek community in Egypt and the founders of the Benaki Museum in Athens. Argine herself was a leading figure in Alexandrian society, and this sale showcases seventeen spectacular textiles from her collection. Appearing at auction for the first time, the exquisite selection of Ottoman textiles comprises important velvets, brocades and silks. Characterised by iconic Ottoman designs, these works are decorated with çintamani patterns and entwined with tulips, hyacinths, roses and carnations – the motifs associated with the Ottoman Empire. These rare, museum-quality works epitomise Ottoman taste from the 16th century onwards, as influenced by Venetian textile production during the same period. Whilst the pieces attest to the taste of these Imperial Ottoman ateliers, they are also a testament to the skill and inventiveness of their craftsman.

A gem-set and enamelled gold necklace, North India, 19th century (est. £30,000 - 40,000) Commissioned by a wealthy patron, this finely executed necklace was set with clear gemstones, which were cut and foil-backed to bring out their maximum brilliance as was the custom in 19th-century India. It is entirely covered with fine polychrome enamel on the reverse and miniature seed pearl necklaces with a hanging spinel.

A gem-set and enamelled gold necklace

An illuminated Qur’an juz’ (XVIII), Turkey, Ottoman, early 15th century (est. £15,000 - 25,000) The sale will include the second part of the renowned collection of the late Jafar Ghazi, which comprises thirty manuscripts and calligraphies. Each work was selected by Ghazi as an example of the highest quality calligraphy from multiple Islamic courts over several continents. This Qur’an juz’ is an important example of early Ottoman manuscript production, related stylistically to late Mamluk Qur'ans, especially in the layout and fine muhaqqaq script. The strong, flowing rhythm is enhanced by the use of alternate lines of blue and gold ink. An Arabian saif with gold hilt and mounted scabbard, Arabian Peninsula, 19th-century (est. £8,000 - 12,000) The exhibition will present a selection of weapons from the Arabian Peninsula, led by a silver and gilt-overlaid Indo-Arab matchlock gun – featuring both Indian and Ottoman designs, constructed with a Spanish-style barrel. This Arabian ‘saif’, or curved sword, was covered entirely in gold and likely to have been intended as a presentation gift.

Orientalist Art Orientalism was essentially a 19th-century phenomenon. While many other movements in 19th-century European art were relatively short-lived, Orientalism's durability lay in its versatility. Travelling from America and Europe to the lands known collectively in the 18th and 19th centuries as the Orient, artists aimed to capture sites, cultures and the bright desert light that few had experienced before. Orientalist art sheds light on the history of these lands – encompassing Morocco in the west through Egypt, Istanbul and the Levant to as Far East as Persia and India – from a time when photography was in its infancy and figurative art was not traditionally practised.

Eugène Girardet, A Desert Caravan (est. £100,000 - 150,000) Girardet's luminous, cinematic view of the nomadic life depicts a Berber tribe crossing the desert, following the course of a wadi or dried-up riverbed towards its next camp and watering place. The painting is as much a celebration of the stoicism and dignity of the self-sufficient tribesmen and women, shepherding their herd as they travel, as it is of the Saharan light and the intensity of the desert sun. Girardet hailed from an artistic Swiss Huguenot family, and had long been inspired to travel by his uncles Karl and Edouard, who had journeyed to and painted Egypt; and from his father Paul, who had engraved episodes of the colonial war in Algeria after Horace Vernet. In 1874, Girardet embarked for Morocco, then travelled to Tunisia and Algeria, for which he developed a particular fondness.

Rudolf Ernst, The Fortune Teller, Cairo (est. £80,000 - 120,000) Appearing at auction for the first time, The Fortune Teller, Cairo was acquired by the great grandparents of the current owner in New York between 1888 and 1898. In the setting, Ernst has taken inspiration from the portal of the Sultan Hasan Mosque in Cairo, regarded as the greatest mosque of the medieval Islamic world. Ernst depicts a side gate to the mosque, with its great copper doors and niche with muqarnas decoration, in whose entrance a fortune teller or sufi mystic dispenses his wisdom to a man wearing a Turco-Egyptian hat known as a tarboosh. Men queue up in their dozens in the blazing afternoon heat to await their turn to be blessed or enlightened. Ernst's fascination with Islamic culture was sparked by his journeys to Andalusia, the Ottoman Empire, and Egypt in the 1880s, and his paintings reflect not only his skills as an artist but the breadth of his knowledge of the cultures he visited. His meticulously finished paintings are worked up from the sketches, photographs, and props and costumes brought back to Paris from his travels. The close cropping of this work, particularly of the figure on the right, is clearly indebted to photography, and gives it the sense of a snap shot of everyday life.

Eugène Baugniès, The Dhikr (est. £80,000 - 120,000) Dhikr, meaning 'remembrance', is a form of devotion, associated chiefly with Sufism, in which the worshippers are absorbed in the rhythmic repetition of the name of God or his attributes, often to the accompaniment of music. Baugniès depicts a Sufi ceremony in great detail: a group of men, seated in a semi-circle on straw mats in a mosque courtyard, practice dhikr, entranced by a Sufi mystic and the mesmerizing sound of flute and tambourine.

PRECIOUSNESS AND PLAY Ode to Intuición Series

Comprising 60 sculptural vessels, Juli Bolaños-Durman's Ode to Intuición Series is an exploration of preciousness and play, with preciousness not only referring to the fragility of glass but also to the emotional attachment to the found objects. Her work combines found items with blown glass and uses cutting and engraving techniques to create new unique objects. And that's the challenge: to create something beautiful from things that people are about to discard. Juli Bolaños-Durman favours objects that act as storytellers and constitute experiences that are a link to emotional connections.

SENSE OF LIGHT AND SPACE

PALM JUMEIRAH DUBAI, UAE

By Stuart Matthew

Palm Jumeirah’s SOHO Aquavilla “Our SOHO Aquavilla gives us a privileged perspective on Dubai. The location allows us to enjoy the relaxed life provided by a spacious family home, but still be close to the centre of a dynamic city. We can enjoy time on the beach right in front of our living room or do a few laps of the pool and then head into any busy urban hotspot for a change of scene.” - Sahil Khosla, Owner of SOHO Aquavilla

PALM JUMEIRAH’S SOHO AQUAVILLA Power of Natural Light Natural light can be a designer’s greatest asset. When used with care and consideration, it can lift a beautiful interior into the realm of the extraordinary, ushering glimpses of the outdoors and a sense of space into every part of a home. The power of natural light and what can be achieved with it is on display from the first steps inside this SOHO Aquavilla. Despite the enormous dimensions of the 15,000 Sq. Ft. residence, the home’s views across Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah are visible from its showcase entryway.

“Being able to connect the home with its amazing surroundings and the unique site we had at Jumeirah Pointe was incredibly important to us in this project. With a location this exclusive it was vital that the villa’s design made the most of its outlook across the water and back towards the city skyline.” - Sahil Khosla Design-Centric Development With 16,000 Sq. Ft. plot on Frond I of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, the site is nearly double the size of others in the area. Floor-to-ceiling windows, some 14 feet high, dominate the south-facing profile of this stunning villa. The bisecting interior walls are cut back from the edge of the façade to allow for corner windows and extend the views south beyond the very edges of the structure. Sitting on an east-west axis, the home’s orientation provides all-day sun to light its interior, while the deep balcony overhangs shade the windows from direct summer rays. An infinity pool with built-in Jacuzzi kick starts a water view that merges with the still bay beyond the beach, which is accessed directly from the property. On each level, the slimline windows can be pushed back to open the property up to the outdoors – whether it is to be experienced from the fully planted and maturing garden or the spacious balconies of the home’s upper levels.

gulfsothebysrealty.com

The interior demonstrates quickly the attention to detail afforded to the project by its developer and its interiors team from Naga Architects. Being offered as a fully furnished package, the property combines classic material choices and finishes with contemporary furnishings to create a space that will stun guests with its chicness, while making them feel completely at home too. Touch of Luxury At SOHO Aquavilla, the floors are covered in the warm delicate caramel of a beautiful travertine stone, which unifies the different zones of the open-plan living areas – from the generous proportions of the built-in bar, through the formal and informal seating areas, and to the large entertainer’s kitchen. In the basement of the home, there is space to chill out and work out. A fully fitted gym and exercise space have been created using the latest technologies from Technogym. On the same level, there is a den-like sitting room that could be used as a media entertainment centre or just a quiet relaxation spot. The basement level also contains a spa room, with a Jacuzzi, a multiheaded rain shower, an adjustable massage table, and a hairdressing station complete with barber’s chair. A lift provides access to all levels of the house and a sophisticated Jung home automation system controls everything, from air conditioning and the LED lighting to the positioning of window shades and the audio system. Premium brand fixtures, fittings and appliances are deployed throughout, including top-tier products from Gaggenau, Sub-Zero and BAGNODESIGN. The extensive property also includes a considerable back-of-house area with three rooms as living space for household staff.

LASVIT BLENDS ELEMENTS OF LIGHT, MUSIC AND WATER AT DUBAI OPERA LASVIT’s motto of transforming glass into breathtaking light and design experiences certainly comes alive in Dubai Opera.

gulfsothebysrealty.com

42  COULISSE

The dynamically-lit glass sculpture titled Symphony by LASVIT spans three floors of the main atrium and like Dubai Opera itself, the sculpture was inspired by the element of water and Dubai’s maritime past. It is composed of thousands of individually crafted glass pearls – the concept of pearls adding preciousness, rarity and timelessness, which are qualities inherently present in hand-blown glass and crystal. The overall shape of the sculpture also draws its inspiration from fishing nets in a vortex of bubbles rising through the depths of the sea. “The theme of the sculpture arises from traditional and cultural elements of the UAE. I aimed for a very organic appearance,” says Libor Sostak, designer of the piece. “But LASVIT’s home, Prague, is one of the original centres of opera, a city favoured by Mozart. We have a legacy of historic theatres and music halls, some of which LASVIT helped reconstruct. I envisioned a modern-day lighting centrepiece that would create the same sense of luxury and grandeur that opera deserves. The dynamic lighting is very sophisticated and allows us to program effects to match the music. Visitors will naturally be drawn to light and music, forming a beating heart within the space.”

gulfsothebysrealty.com

The jewel-like heart of Dubai Opera is 11 metres long, 5 metres wide and has an overall height of 27 meters. This 5-tonne sculpture is lit by nearly 3,000 internal LED sources and sparkles with thousands of hand-blown crystal components. The individual pearls contain tiny bubbles of air captured in the glass to enhance its refraction of light, an effect essential for the dynamic lighting of the sculpture. In a subtle reference to the trade that stood as the foundation of Dubai, the geometric spacing of glass elements resembles fishing nets moving through water. “I’ve said before that Dubai Opera and the Opera District will encapsulate not only a fantastic range of performance genres but also bespoke and exclusive cultural commissions of all kinds,” comments Chief Executive of Dubai Opera, Jasper Hope, “Working with the core elements of Dubai Opera’s overall design, the team at LASVIT have created a sculpture which will be another jewel in our collection for guests to enjoy every time they visit the venue.” LASVIT is a manufacturer of unique works of glass, including bespoke lighting installations, glass artworks, and award-winning collections. LASVIT is well known throughout the Emirates for their lighting sculptures, particularly in the field of luxury hospitality, as well as private residences and public spaces, such as the Dubai Metro. lasvit.com

IAN KIRKBY The Connoisseur of Luxury While things like prestige, exclusivity and premium price tags are the enduring hallmarks of buying luxury homes, for Ian Kirkby, there is much more to luxury than that. Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty’s Director of The Luxury Collection, Ian is a person who is an expert in matters of refined living and luxury/ ultra-luxury properties and investments. Specialised knowledge, personal observation, exceptional experience, strategic location intelligence, and acumen in real estate investment, to name a few, are paramount to his profession. With a degree in Commercial Law from Tampa State University in Florida, Ian’s expertise encompasses investments, portfolio management, business development, investment properties, wealth management, investment advisory, financial advisory, asset management, and contract negotiations. He has networked with high net worth and ultra high net worth individuals, professional athletes, and leading companies. He has managed an elite sales team and established a Dubai-based luxury real estate company as a reputable brokerage brand for the discerning, high-end clientele in the Emirates. In 2016, Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty appointed Ian to lead The Luxury Collection, a specialist division concentrating on the sales of properties valued at AED 10 million and above. Under his leadership, The Luxury Collection aims to provide a new level of service to both sellers and buyers/investors, creating a reputation as the core drivers for selling and buying of assets in Dubai’s high-end communities. What brought you to the luxury field of real estate? IK: Having practised law with high net worth individuals on a global scale within the commercial and individual property, I found myself assisting the global elite with personal property acquisitions on a regular basis and soon found my niche within this level of real estate.

What do you like most about selling luxury properties? IK: I have always had a passion for luxury products and items, from clothes to cars and properties. I like to feel and review items of quality – not from a price perspective but from an aesthetic point of view. Your home is a reflection of your personality to a degree and your standing as an individual. What sets The Luxury Collection apart from other luxury real estate brokerages? IK: We have taken what I believe to be the top performers from other agencies. The Luxury Collection team continues to deliver not only with transactional results but also a level of service that a luxury client would expect above and beyond. There’s a big difference that a Luxury Collection’s global property consultant can make compared to a traditional agent. It’s all about exceptional people with exceptional experiences. What is the next up-and-coming neighbourhood in Dubai? IK: At present, there are several developments. Jumeirah Hills with its mix of style, size and facilities will certainly be at the top of my list. With large golf course facing mansions to individual apartments, this new project caters for all and is located in one of the most central areas of Dubai. What makes you proud working with a prestigious real estate brand, Sotheby’s International Realty®? IK: To me, Sotheby’s International Realty® is not just a brand, but a global recognition of success, giving each agent – from the general sales team members to the top luxury agents – the ability to work at an unprecedented level, with support and international recognition. Working at Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty allows you not only to be at the top of your field within the local market but also to have the strength to entertain clients globally, with the knowledge that wherever in the world your client requests their real

estate investment to be, the level of service will always be of quality and of the highest standard. What do you like most about working and living in Dubai? IK: Living in Dubai exposes you to such a diverse mix of cultures and individuals which are a great way to live. Its proximity to the rest of the world is simply amazing – giving you access to some of the most wonderful locations on the planet. The lifestyle that one can create for himself with hard work and success is probably one of the key elements that keeps me in this wonderful City. Apart from the luxury real estate, what are your other passions? IK: My personal interest outside of my working life include golf, travel and fine dining. I would love to spend more time improving my limited golfing talents and setting aside time to continue my plans to travel around the world.

ALIA JAMAL Properties, Power, and Possibilities Coco Chanel once said, “Keep your heels, head, and standards high.” This piece of advice from one of the world’s most iconic, powerful and influential women, perhaps, defines best the work attitude and approaches of Alia Jamal, Head of Commercial and Leasing at Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty.

success moves. From helming the Leasing Division of the organization, I then went on to challenging myself once again by establishing the Commercial Division with a strong team of individuals, aiming to provide all business clients with a one-stop-shop solution.

Assertiveness that inspires. Confidence and dominance that drive business’ growth and retention. Opinions that matter. Ethics that exceed expectations. And potentialities that defy what’s impossible and get things done. Beyond those leopard stilettos, Alia is a real estate expert who walks high with visions, ambition, optimism, fresh business perspectives, and unceasing passion for doing more and being more.

In 2016, when Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty acquired ERE HOMES, the company appointed you as its Head of Commercial and Leasing Division. Tell us more about this division. AJ: Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty’s Commercial and Leasing Division is composed of 30 global property consultants. Our services encompass residential leasing and commercial sales and leasing. Since the merger with Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty, our team has expanded and we have a very strong presence in all the prime areas of Dubai.

Alia began her real estate career 10 years ago in London’s renowned estate agency, Foxtons. Her experience at Foxtons brought her success within the London property market and her consistent performance led her into management. In 2012, Alia decided to take her career further by taking a new challenge and joining the Dubai real estate industry. From being a leasing agent who consistently met her targets to spearheading a specialised division of the GCC affiliate of the prestigious Sotheby’s International Realty®, Alia shares her experiences, advice and philosophy for a successful working life. With a thriving career in London’s real estate, what made you decide to move to Dubai? AJ: Upon a short holiday visit in 2011, I witnessed the drastic changes in the Dubai property market, and that’s when I decided to move to Dubai in 2012 to take advantage of a growing and innovative market. I started with ERE HOMES and eventually became an asset to the company, working initially in residential leasing. Within 18 months, I was advanced to Leasing Director. What were the key factors behind your rapid success, considering that back then you were new to the Dubai real estate industry? AJ: I believe that being consistent with reaching targets and maintaining a top-performer status on multiple occasions played a significant role in my rapid success in the industry. With these successes, I became an integral part not only of the growth of the employer's Leasing Division but also in implementing my expertise to all the divisions and aiding the expansion. I believe that pushing past your comfort zone and continuing to challenge yourself are critical career

Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty’s Commercial and Leasing Division – what sets it apart from the competition? AJ: We have about 30 global property consultants – all of whom are trained by professionals who have had a proven track record and successful careers in leasing. A two-week training course commences – learning about the step-by-step process of leasing with a thorough knowledge research of their designated areas. This is expected from our global property consultants so that they can present their designated area in detail to their peers/networks. What interests you about the commercial and leasing division over residential sales? AJ: The increase of foreign investment in lieu of global brands relocating allows me to be at the forefront of current market trends, along with the satisfaction of working in a fast paced environment. How would you compare the real estate market of Dubai to that of London? AJ: London’s property market has tax implications for investors with lower yields, as well as with uncertainty in lieu of Brexit and monetary exchange rates. The property market in the UK has dropped as a whole around 25 percent. This in turn rules in favour of Dubai where the investors’ confidence is positive in light of the dirham being pegged to the dollar, together with various events such as the Dubai Expo 2020, and the investments in the expansion of Al Maktoum Airport with an excess of USD 5 billion. In addition, numerous new projects, such as theme parks and travel and tourism

initiatives attract foreign investment, new employment and industry growth as a whole which translates to higher demand. What do you like most about working with the Sotheby’s International Realty® brand? AJ: The brand speaks volumes. Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty allows me to network with the real estate world and offer an international service to all clients with commercial and residential requirements. “Dubai is a city of vast opportunity” – what’s your take on that? AJ: Working and living in Dubai offers so many opportunities. Along with the weather and the eclectic lifestyle, what I like most is the spearheading environment, constantly evolving with innovative developments, which motivates me to consistently grow as a better individual and working professional. Simply put, in Dubai, the possibilities are endless and it’s all up to you to utilise it to your advantage.

JAFAR DAJANI Architect and Interior Designer One of the recognised top regional talents in architecture and interior design, Jordan-born interior architect, Jafar Dajani, specialised in boutique hotels and is known for several upscale residential projects he has completed in Dubai. ‘Functional and timeless’ as his design philosophies, Dajani shared with us his passion for his craft, art and furniture design. Jafar will debut his most recent artistic collection at Dubai Design Days taking place 14-17 March 2017. After studying architecture, what moved you to master interior design? JD: I was always interested in the arts and felt that studying architecture would be the foundation of all art, including interiors. Putting together an interior setup was more like a puzzle to me – making it all come together in a unique and aesthetic way is something that gives me immense pleasure. What led you to design your own line of furniture? JD: When I started designing interiors, I recognised the need for bespoke furniture to suit my client's tastes. Sometimes, you just don't get what you need in the market in terms of dimension or material combinations, so I was naturally led onto the path to designing my own pieces. The inspiration behind your creations? JD: My surroundings, travels, and admiration and interest in art. Would you say there is a common theme amongst your pieces? JD: An underlying theme in all of my work is geometry. I'm obsessed with proportion and constantly changing my pieces until I’m wholly satisfied with the overall result.

At the Amman Design Week, you presented the ‘8 Circle / Jabal Amman Table'. Can you tell us the concept behind this unique piece? JD: The table relates to my memories of growing up in the city of Amman, namely around the 8 circles of West Amman, and so consists of 8 cylinders, stacked on top of each other. The materials correspond to the colour or texture that you see throughout your journey on this route. The spinal design is an homage to how this route has become the backbone of the city. What is your next big project? JD: Alongside my interior design projects in Dubai, my next endeavour is to do an exhibition in Amman that would include art and furniture. Do you plan to stay in Dubai? JD: Yes, for the foreseeable future, I will be staying in Dubai as I find that this city has an encouraging platform for up and coming designers in the MENA region.

2017 DESIGN TRENDS Matteo Bianchi | Award-Winning Interior Designer in London Born and bred in Venice, Bianchi has now lived in London for the past 10 years where he has fully embraced his true passion for manipulating and decorating spaces. With an approach to design that is both chic and distinctive, he understands good craftsmanship and elegant design which is part of his Venetian heritage. Founded in 2007, Matteo Bianchi Studio works with clients who like to reflect their personality into their private space or brand. Working on both residential and commercial projects the studio enjoys the crossover and similarities between the genres while applying their simple philosophy of ‘listen, design, inspire!’ to each aspect of their work. Bagging the award best 'UK Office Interior' at the International Property Awards in 2015, Bianchi shared with Downtown Design his insight into next year's trends, application of materials, and future vision. Downtown Design is the only platform in the Middle East for the region's trade professionals to discover original, high quality deigns from all over the world. Downtown Design will run from November 14-17, 2017 as a key element of Dubai Design Week and will present brands such as Kettal, Bernhardt, Bomma, Roca, Hacker, and Moroso. What would you say are the top 5 interior design trends for 2017? MB: In terms of style, we will have lots what I like to call ‘Chic Opulence’ – a crossover style applying luxurious materials to design without making the whole appearance too pompous or heavy.

Image: Bernhardt

Creating a harmonious balance will be a ‘Mix and Match’ of soft furniture from different brands with different colours, texture and heights. We will also go through a ‘Golden Era’ meaning that gold will come back strong as a finish but, rather than being at the forefront, will have soft washed sheen or will feature as a detail. In terms of style reference, we will go fully back to the 70’s with lots of deep somnolent colours such as burgundy or terracotta and resuscitate key materials of that era such as velvets, dark woods, metal finishes and opaque glass.

gulfsothebysrealty.com

What materials and patterns do you see emerging in the coming year? MB: Metal finishes will dominate the scene everywhere: kitchens, tables, basins, splash backs, veneers, you name it. Glass will take prominence with an interesting mottled finish.

How do you think lighting will be used differently this year? MB: Lighting will continue to be soft and indirect – complimenting spaces without taking the centre stage. Everything from shelves, cabinets to mottled glass doors will be backlit, which will be elegant and stimulating at the same time. How does sustainability inform design trends internationally? MB: I believe sustainability in design products is in a sense smart application of materials. For example, engineered wood uses a fraction of raw material rather than solid wood, costs half the price and has way better performance than its solid counterpart. Apart from much easier installation, engineered wood has superior stability making it resistant to changes in temperature and humidity.

Image: Woodfloors

Image: Moroso

What colours do you think will influence interior design in 2017? MB: There will be a continued and strong use of monochrome in interior design palettes throughout the year. Other colours that will dominate the design world will be pink, terracotta, burgundy, all shades of blue and deep greens.

What socio-economic factors do you think affect design production and process? MB: There is an interesting wave of up-selling existing furniture. eBay made an inspiring and subtle exhibition during the last Milan Fair with few examples on how you can upscale some run down objects into bespoke, unique, elegant pieces.

Image: Designed by Hind

Image: Kohler

With regards to bathroom trends do you think there will be a shift in the usage of marble and copper accents? MB: There won’t be just copper accents but rather different metals such as stainless steel, bronze, distressed copper mixed with warm wood finishes that will take the bathroom basins and atmosphere onto another level.

What innovation in materials do you see emerging? MB: With a continuous change in the way creativity is applied to product design, I see the printing industry fusing with the design industry. This infusion will be seen in products such as tiles, wallpaper and fabrics giving designers the potential to apply themselves differently. What do you think the future of handmade design is? MB: A growing access to affordable design and mass production doesn’t mean that skilled craftsmanship will die. On the contrary, I think we will never stop to mix and match the commodity item with something made by the local artisans. matteobianchi.co.uk downtowndesign.com

BETHAN GRAY Drawn to Islamic Art & Craft Bethan Gray, the winner of Best British Designer Award 2013/14, is delighted to announce that she will be presenting at this year’s Design Days Dubai where she will be launching her new series, Shamsian Collection, inspired by Omani architectural references and craft. Influenced and inspired by cultural references in her work, from the black and white medieval churches in Italy, to the dome of UNESCO World Heritage site, to the Sheikh Lotfollah mosque in Isfahan, Bethan has an innate ability to translate and transform these references into contemporary pieces that are warm, timeless and elegant. The elegance and harmony of her work have been recognised in particular by renowned Islamic art scholars, establishing Bethan as an ambassador for contemporary Islamic design. She co-founded The Ruby Tree, placing social purpose at its core, and her work with the charitable foundation, Turquoise Mountain, is helping regenerate crafts DNA within the Middle East. As part of her exhibition, Bethan will also introduce Mohamad Reza Shamsian, a highly sought-after, masterful Iranian artist, to the contemporary design world. When Shamsian, who had been searching for the perfect designer to translate his ancient, traditional craft into modern and contemporary designs, came across the award-winning Bethan Gray, he was immediately drawn to her highly original style and her deep empathy for Islamic art and craft. After their first meeting, it became clear that their visions perfectly intertwined; Bethan’s warm and contemporary style paired with a shrewd knowledge of cutting edge design technology was exactly what Shamsian and his master craftsmen had been looking for. The Shamsian Collection features the intricate use of marquetry on stained birds-eye maple, in stunning combination with solid brass or mother of pearl. Bethan also continues to explore her versatile palette - which ranges from soft muted feminine shades to highly saturated, more masculine colours - through the painstaking selection and use of natural materials. The coloured woods, metallics and mother of pearl from the Shamsian Collection all sit perfectly against the stone colours of her Band Collection and the rose quartz of The Ruby Tree pieces.

What first piqued your interest in Islamic-inspired designs? BG: Cultural referencing is at the heart of my design philosophy. Through my travels and research, I’m inspired to create original contemporary pieces that resonate with global, as well as local, audiences, and that have an elegant and timeless appeal. Currently, I’m particularly drawn to the graphic nature of Islamic art and craft – cultural references found in the region ranging from mosques to sailing boats, detailing from aspects of forts to the pattern found on ceramics. I’m always drawn to these references – my maternal ancestors were originally from Rajasthan and travelled through Persia and Arabia before settling in Europe, so I guess you could say it’s in my genes. I’ve also worked extensively in partnership with Islamic arts and craft scholar, M. Abdul Karim Crites, who has heightened my awareness and understanding of the key aspects of the Islamic art. How did you work with Mohamad Reza Shamsian to create the Shamsian collection? BG: Shamsian has been making pieces and working on commissions for Middle Eastern royalty for 40 years, and through that had honed and perfected the exquisite use of marquetry and brass inlay. He had been thinking for a while to try to apply these techniques to contemporary pieces and also pieces that could be put into small production runs. This was what they challenged me with when asked to work in partnership. With the Shamsian collection, is there a specific piece that you favoured most? BG: That’s hard to say. All the pieces feature such remarkable craftsmanship. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with Shamsian himself. As statement pieces, the cabinetry stands out. On the Nizwa cabinets, we’ve been able to combine several different very skilled techniques, such as marquetry, solid brass inlay and hand-staining in one piece. Creating the ombré effect on the Nizwa cabinet is a highly skilled process, where the master craftsman has to apply several layers of stain on top of the Italian hand-dyed veneer. Do you plan to create more Islamic or Middle Eastern inspired collections? BG: Yes, I’m really looking forward to being in Dubai during Design Days Dubai – to see what inspiration I may find and where that may lead!

What is your next key project or collection in the works? BG: I will be exhibiting a new Dhow Cabinet during Design Days Dubai. For this, I have taken inspiration from the traditional dhow sailing boats of Oman. Traditional dhows were driven by large triangular lateen sails made of cotton and sewn together in strips. The sails were bound to the hull using ropes made from coir, which created a unique and textured lineation. This lineation has informed the distinct and exquisite curved patterning found on the dhow pieces. Made from solid brass and painstakingly applied by hand, the dynamic and lustrous effect is complemented by a hand lacquered finish on the coffee table, and by exquisite hand-stained Italian veneer on the dramatic four-door Dhow Cabinet.

“I am delighted to collaborate with Shamsian, he brings an exquisite appreciation and a meticulous approach to the intricacies of marquetry, honed over 30 years." bethangray.com designdaysdubai.ae

GREEN IS IN

Everyone has heard the buzz words: organic, renewable, eco-friendly, and carbon footprint – but what do they really mean and how can the average citizen have an impact on climate change without taking on huge costs? Enter The Sustainable City in Dubai. The first operational Net Zero Energy City in Dubai This 5,000,000 Sq.Ft. master planned development is centrally located in Dubailand on Al Qudra Road, 20 minutes from Al Maktoum International Airport and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, and comprises 500 villas, a central commercial plaza, a modern, state-of-the-art mosque, an equestrian centre, an innovation centre, a hotel, a school, and a central green spine, which houses the community pool and 11 biodomes for urban farming. The concept was conceived by the extraordinary team of Diamond Developers under the guidance of visionary CEO, Faris Saeed, who founded the company back in 2003. With an already impressive portfolio of more than 3,039 residential units and 400,000 Sq. Ft. of commercial space in prime communities across the emirate, The Sustainable City was launched in 2013.

Bio-dome greenhouses along the city's Central Green Spine

The Sustainable City Dubailand, Dubai

The idea – the first of its kind in Dubai – revolved around a vision to accelerate the positive and foreseeable evolution to sustainability in the built environment and focuses on the impact of three principal areas: social, economic and environmental. A pillar for creating tomorrow’s sustainable world This master planned community, which saw its first residents move in last spring, is already a thriving environment with 90 percent of the villas now occupied and is garnering serious attention to the green-living concept on a global scale. This ready-to-move-in villa community boasts an elaborate list of sustainable features without the costs of the technologically advanced finishes being off-loaded to the homeowners. On the contrary, these initiatives actually serve to offset the typical costs a villa resident would have in a similar sized community. Aside from the myriad of amenities in this family-friendly community, which boasts a car-free zone where children can play and ride their bikes without having to look both ways, residents of The Sustainable City enjoy zero net service fees, zero net maintenance fees, and reduced DEWA bills. Despite the car-free zones, residents can move around the community quickly and easily using one of the many buggies and the 24-hour concierge service on hand. Furthermore, upon moving in, the owners and tenants are added to the management company register (onsite), giving access to the many exclusive residents’ events held throughout the year and an online app for all things ‘Sustainable City’.

technology, which not only benefits the environment but also the homeowners’ wallets. For example, Diamond Developers installed photovoltaic solar panels on the villa rooftops and outdoor car park stations to “collect” energy that provides the electricity needed to power street lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, greywater treatment, and the urban farm – all for FREE, thereby helping the city achieve NET ZERO service charge. These panels also cleverly serve to provide much-needed shade in Dubai’s warmer months. The Residential Clusters of The Sustainable City are comprised of five residential clusters, housing a total of 500 villas. Connected to the Central Green Spine that runs the length of the City, each cluster is comprised of 90 Courtyard Villas, eight Garden Villas, two Signature Villas. These L-shaped two-storey villas combine ergonomic excellence with contemporary design to meet the highest environmental performance standards without compromising on a desirable living space. The third and top floor provide an ample roof terrace – much of which is shaded by the homes’ unobtrusive solar panels. This area is ideal for entertaining and relaxing, particularly in Dubai’s winter months. A flourishing park runs through the entire length of The Sustainable City, forming the community’s Central Green Spine. The park is an active destination with over three kilometres of recreation and trails interspersed with outdoor fitness stations, sports fields and courts, as well as children’s play zones and tranquil seating areas to relax and watch the world go by. These fitness and activity centres link to the community’s equestrian and cycle-way trails to form a 10-kilometre continuous network of recreational opportunities. The Sustainable City community swimming pool is at the very heart of the Central Green Spine, offering two ample pools – adult and separate children’s pool – which are temperature-regulated and shaded. Although swimming pools are not considered to be particularly environmentally friendly, a community pool is required as part of a functioning community in the UAE and therefore has been added to the master plan and takes into account as many sustainable elements as a pool can, such as using environmentally friendly chemicals. Car-free zones with shaded pedestrian paths and electric buggies

A real-time green eco-scape at the heart of your daily life There are 11 bio-dome greenhouses running the length of the Central Green Spine with a total capacity of over 3,000 square metres for urban farming. The Sustainable City has begun cultivation and the plan is to diversify and grow as many fruits and vegetables as possible in these domes and throughout the green spine. The park will also contain, approximately, a hectare of outdoor permaculture gardens, offering opportunities for interested residents to become involved in community farming groups. A Community Supported Agriculture Food Box program allows residents to access fresh produce weekly. The Central Green Spine is irrigated with 100% recycled greywater (water collected from the villas and treated in a below ground treatment facility onsite). This clean water is then circulated through a series of lakes and streams that flow along the length of the Central Green Spine, and also irrigate the falaj (water channel) and the flora along the way. This innovative concept is another reason the community is able to operate on zero service charges and maintenance fees. Later this year, an equestrian centre is set to open offering horse riding lessons for residents. The next phase of the development will include an innovation centre with a 700-seat auditorium for showcasing future events relating to sustainability, a five-star InterContinental Hotel – the first 100% solar powered hotel in the world, and a school where children can actively participate and learn about the effects of everyday life on the environment. A selection of villas is still available for sale (prices starting from AED 3,360,000) and for rent (prices starting from AED 200,000). LUXURY PROJECTS

THE PINNACLE OF AFFLUENCE

Every so often, a project comes along that can only be described as one-of-a-kind. But in a city such as Dubai – where bigger, better, faster, taller are commonplace – how can anyone truly believe such claims? ONE PALM by Omniyat has future-proofed its status as a truly one-of-a-kind development in the city of excess. A striking edifice befitting a world-famous landmark Located on the infamous Palm Jumeirah, arguably one of the most iconic land reclamations to date, ONE PALM sits at the entrance to the famed island and at the base of the trunk. Completed in 2006, this man-made island is the preferred destination for affluent jetsetters who appreciate the finer things in life. From ultra-exclusive beaches to yachting across the crystal blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, Palm Jumeirah is a unique setting and perhaps the only setting worthy of the truly special residences at ONE PALM.

360-degree vistas of the Gulf and the city beyond

One Palm Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

Featuring only 90 ultra-exclusive “villas in the sky”, Omniyat has amassed an impressive team to create a living environment that offers residents and their guests a bespoke experience each and every day. Omniyat themselves have secured a name in the Dubai real estate market with impressive projects and partnerships in key areas including The Opus with immortalised Zaha Hadid. Founded in 2005, Omniyat has consistently led the way for distinctive, high quality properties with a focus on design and innovation.

A landmark residence on Dubai's iconic Palm Jumeirah island

Arrive in style along the pristine courtyard entrance

ONE PALM is no exception and in fact instead will serve as the company’s flagship luxury residential development. With a striking façade, extensive landscaping by Vladimir Djurovic and lavish interiors from not one but two award-winning interior design firms – Japan’s whimsically named Super Potato and London’s prestigious Elicyon – the developer has spared no expense for what it calls the “singular pursuit of bliss”.

gulfsothebysrealty.com

Iconic architecture, unbeatable amenities, and lush green spaces With a long list of amenities spread over approximately 100,000 Sq. Ft. of impeccably manicured grounds, each of the 90 residents lucky enough to call ONE PALM home will feel like they have the run of the place. Privacy in a high-rise apartment is truly a luxury but with expansive private terraces – some with private swimming pools and hot tubs included – owners can dictate exactly how much or how little they want to interact with their neighbours. Each apartment boasts spectacular views both to the north overlooking the Dubai skyline and to the south across the Gulf. To ensure a prime view is enjoyed by one and all, Omniyat raised the building so that the first residential floor is above the elevated roadway into the Palm Jumeirah. And when residents at ONE PALM do feel like being social or just stepping out the front door of their ultra-lavish apartment, the choices are seemly endless. A dip in one of the four swimming pools is easily followed by a satisfying work-out in the state-of-the-art gym. Or perhaps spending the day at the beach club taking in the beautiful sea-side views and watching fellow residents pull up to the property’s private jetty is on the day’s agenda. Residents with families will appreciate the children’s playroom and outdoor cinema. And when a quiet escape is called for, look no further than the onsite spa. These five-star amenities, however, are only as good as the service provider so Omniyat has partnered with an as yet revealed luxury hotel operator who will oversee residents’ every need. But when valet parking means not driving past the two-storey waterfall that cascades into the parking garage that houses your super-sized spot, you might decide to pass on the convenience every now and then.
