CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

Welcome to the new edition of haute, focusing on spring gardens and Japanese minimalism. In this issue, we take a trip to the ‘land of the rising sun’ for its much celebrated season of sakura or cherry blossoms. From the neon-lit skyscrapers and bustling streets of Tokyo, we venture to the countryside of Kanazawa for a relaxing retreat in its famous onsen or volcanic hot spring spa. And, of course, we take a look at Zen gardens in our properties in Kita-Kamakura and Denenchofu Residence. From our international properties, we feature the classic European gardens in a private neighbourhood on the east side of San Jose, Costa Rica; Gan Aden or Garden of Eden in the exclusive gated golf community of Castle Pines in Colorado; a private estate in Mougins with Mediterranean inspired landscaping essences; and a 17th century classic masterpiece that was once the summer residence of Princess Paolina Bonaparte in Compignano, Italy. Focusing further on great gardens, Kamelia Bin Zaal, a renowned landscape architect in the region, shares the concept behind her award-winning “The Beauty of Islam” project. We then wander to one of our exclusive properties in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, the Laguna Tower Penthouse, for a breezy afternoon talk with the owner Daniela Vincenz about her artistic ventures in and outside Dubai. We also explore some bespoke backyards from our collection of luxury properties in the UAE. We highlight the best art scene happening in Art Week Dubai in our spring calendar. The special programme includes the award-winning lighting artisan, LASVIT, with glass artworks designed by world-class artists, including the Campana Brothers and renowned Czech designers, such as Maxim Velcovsky, Jan Plechac and Henry Wielgus. Because spring is a concept of possibilities, allow us to share with you our successes in the ultra luxury development projects in Dubai, including The 118 in the upscale Downtown District and 1/JBR in the prestigious Jumeirah Beach Residence. We are even taking a step toward achieving more possibilities through our newest engagement in Manchester, UK – with exciting development projects such as Oxygen, Northgate and On The Park, offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity for real estate investors and end-users. We hope that our features provide you with even more inspiration to engage in worthwhile endeavours in time for spring, and, perhaps, for the remaining seasons of the year.

ART FOR TOMORROW Technology, Creativity and the City Spectacular new museums and galleries are springing up around the world. But in an era of digitization can “bricks and mortar” institutions still contain the world of art? How will the digital and real art markets co-exist? What can museums do to reinvent themselves for a new generation? Set against the striking cityscape of Doha, Art for Tomorrow brings together world-famous artists and architects, with leading museum directors, urban developers, policy-makers and financiers to address these critical issues and their impact on the creative cities of tomorrow. Join in between March 12-15 for inspiring talks, interviews and vibrant panel discussions led by New York Times journalists, and connect with influential peers at gallery events, receptions and behind-the-scenes tours. www.artfortomorrow.com

WHITE DOMES EXHIBITION Y.Z. Kami at Leila Heller Gallery Leila Heller Gallery Dubai will present a solo exhibition by Iranian-American artist Y.Z. Kami, White Domes, on view from 9 March - 25 April. Best known for his large–scale, seemingly floating, otherworldly portraits, Kami’s oeuvre has been described by Homi Bhabha as a “mediated transmission across materials, genres, and time exposures”, or a quotidian mystical. In this sprawling installation over the gallery’s three exhibition spaces, the artist extends his gaze further, towards an ever more transcendental materiality with paintings, works on paper, and a sculptural intervention. Kami was born in Iran and lives and works in New York. His work has been collected and exhibited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London, among others. www.leilahellergallery.com

LIGHT DESIGN EXPERIENCE WITH LASVIT The glass manufacturer

LASVIT, the Czech manufacturer of unique works of glass, is known as a company that successfully blends tradition and craft with modern vision and technology. Their large-scale installations can be found in luxury hotels, public buildings and private residences across the world. LASVIT’s kinetic glass sculptures and architectural glass explain how the latest technologies can be employed to design with technical precision, yet the final product remains hand made from blowing to sanding or engraving. Many pieces in their designer lighting collections reach the limit of what is physically possible to produce manually, thanks to the extreme skills of their artisans. It is no wonder that this level of craftsmanship attracts designers from around the world who come to the Czech Republic to work directly with local talent or have their designs produced by LASVIT. Among them are Nendo, Ross Lovegrove, Daniel Libeskind, Maarten Baas, Arik Levy and Michael Young. LASVIT’s recent collaboration with the Brazilian designers, Campana Brothers, perfectly highlights the benefit of fusing various cultures and inspirations.

Campana Brothers at LASVIT The Campana Brothers design studio was founded in 1983 in Sao Paulo by brothers Fernando (born 1961) and Humberto (born 1953) Campana. The Estudio Campana became famous for its furniture design and the creation of intriguing objects such as the Vermelha and Favela chairs. It has since grown to include interior design, architecture, landscaping, stage design, fashion and various artistic partnerships. The Campana portfolio incorporates their commitment to transformation, reinvention and the integration of craftsmanship into mass production. Creating preciousness within common materials empathises the creativity in their design while showcasing their very Brazilian characteristics – the colours, mixtures, the creative chaos and triumph of simple solutions. These are precisely the characteristics they brought to the table in their first venture into glass design. “When we first visited the LASVIT glassworks in Lindava we discovered a large number of possibilities to explore. They have a wide range of techniques that drew our attention and touched us,” says Fernando. Humberto adds “Lasvit was very enthusiastic about the new possibilities of manufacturing, so they challenged us to come up with new ideas. Our collaboration was very inspiring.

The Candy Collection

“For the Candy Collection, we wanted to explore the colorful universe of our Sushi series and to express it through a glass collection,” says Fernando Campana. “Our fascination with this material dates back to our childhood. We were completely seduced by the glass objects that we used to put against the light to investigate their shadows, colors, transparency, dimensions and to imagine the worlds inside them,” he adds.

Humberto Campana

The first result of their collaboration is the Candy Collection, inspired by colourful Brazilian candies. The collection includes the Sphere and Ring chandelier, as well as the Lollipop table lamp, all conceived and produced in hand-blown glass and metal.

“We found the inspiration for this collection in the colorful candies that you can buy in popular markets in Brazil,” explains Humberto. “The brightness of the glass combined with the collection’s palette of colors, as well as the visual aspect of the colourful lines, make you imagine the piece as a candy, as a lollipop. As for the shape of the chandeliers, it comes from our Sushi IV chair”.

Fungo Chandelier – the Unexpected Inspiration Their second project with LASVIT came into production thanks to an unexpected impulse during the Campana Brothers’ visit to the glassworks. The Fungo Chandelier was inspired by the fascinating shape of a mushroom growing on wood. Yet this mushroom did not grow in the forest, the Campana Brothers discovered it growing on an old glassmaking mold. “When we went to the LASVIT glassworks in Lindava, we visited their basement where the wooden molds used to create the shapes of their glass pieces are stored. We noticed a kind of mushroom that grows on them thanks to the humidity. It inspired us to create this piece,” says Fernando Campana. “Our work has always been inspired by nature and we wanted to mix it with LASVIT’s tradition and to fuse their techniques with natural materials.”

The Fungo Chandelier may have been a lucky accident in terms of inspiration, but it required the experience of world-class designers to conceive it and the mastery of Czech craftsmen to execute such a piece. Thus, two distinct cultures met to create something daring, new and original. That’s art at its best.

www.lasvit.com

Fungo chandelier

The resulting artwork displays a striking contrast between wood and glass. Humberto Campana explains, “Our main purpose is to create a shock between the formal rigidity of the chandelier’s wooden structure and the pieces of glass that seem to spontaneously germinate from the wood“.

CURVACIOUS AND AUDACIOUS Form Follows Function Sofa by Daan Mulder Edgy and futuristic looking, the graduation project of the Amsterdam based designer, Daan Mulder, started with the idea of making a sofa in which all functionalities are created from one continuous line. As its name suggests, Form Follows Function’s starting point is the elegancy of lines, but it is very much a practical statement piece. This is Mulder’s design mantra. “When I combine this conceptual way of designing with the newest techniques available, I try to give my work a sense of freedom and I try to show the world a glimpse of the possibilities that lie in the future,” he explains.

SURREAL COMFORT The Knotted Chair by Marcel Wanders By a surprising marriage of handcraft and industrial technology this lightweight chair, designed by Marcel Wanders for Cappelini, is what gave the designer popularity in 1996. The rope, made of an aramide braid and carbon center, is knotted into the shape of a chair. The slack texture is then impregnated with epoxy and hung in a frame to harden. Gaudi revisited: gravity creates the final shape. The transparent appearance of the chair misleads you, the knotted fiber, which doesn’t want to collapse, looks strange, alien perhaps. The chair invites to touch and try it and despite all the modern technology used to create it, the piece has a lovely doltishness, which brings out its individual and personal character. You can experience it live during Dubai Design Days as Wander’s presents his Personal Editions collection.

ORU SERIES Inspired by the Japanese Art of Folding Paper Oru means “folding”, and kami means “paper”, something that can be translated as “the art of folding paper”- geometric line of furniture inspired by the Japanese technique of Origami. AlJoud Lootah, based in Dubai has taken this technique, molded it and applied on pieces made of teak wood, becoming this into beautiful and sharp lines with angles just like folded paper. A chair, a cabinet, a mirror and a lamp, all together make “The Oru Series”. The idea behind the designs is to show that folding a flat, two-dimensional sheet can create aesthetically appealing and functional three-dimensional forms. Her creations are a mix between traditional silhouettes and concepts with a twist on modern elements. Patterns, folds and geometric shapes are at the heart of her inspiration. Her creative drive comes from a passion for detail, aesthetics, and experimental approaches to materials and techniques.

HYBRID BEAUTY Alaa Abou Shaheen’s Explorations A conflict, a combination, a distortion, all this informs the work of Alaa Abou Shaheen; these ideas are embodied in the coming together of a donkey a horse and form the basis of the artist’s exploration of internal strife. Abou Shaheen’s work focuses on the differences between the two beasts, the idea that though they are similar, they are also entirely different, the idea that their nature alone can result in different animals. Nobility versus a certain domesticity, Abou Shaheen’s work shows the differences that attitude can make. The donkey simulates the horse, the horse within it, creating a rebellion against weakness and a frustration with its lot. An interesting collection of work, Abou Shaheen is someone to watch.

Konstantin Kofta

THE LABEL COMBINES SEEMINGLY CONTRADICTORY ELEMENTS OUTSIDE THE TRADITIONAL CANONS OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY His garments are sensual, effortlessly elegant, practical and wearable. Kofta uses rough skin, irregular shapes and unique scents to create a totally new vision of the attire as a whole, combining rural and urban perceptions, and embracing the unintentional and unexpected, which provide inspiration for current and future collections. Each collection appears as a form of art installation. Konstantin Kofta believes that the perfect is concealed in hidden places, away from our vision, which is littered by common standards. The designer strives to fuse unusual components to achieve distinctions that add to a person’s lifestyle rather just to the wardrobe alone. More art than fashion, Kofta’s creations are remarkable, often deformed by water or heat, his pieces inspire thought and reflection.

'NOTEBOOKS' Sadik Kwaish Alfraji A SERIES OF EVOCATIVE DRAWINGS SET IN BLACK INDIAN INK DETAILING IN CHILDLIKE AND NAIVE STYLE THE DARING, PERILOUS ADVENTURES OF A LITTLE BOY A video animation of an evolving black and white drawing that depicts the story of life in Iraq and its subsequent displacement as a visualised stream of consciousness. These are sightings from “Driven by Storms (The Notebooks)” the latest installation of works by multimedia Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji at Ayyam Gallery Beirut. The body of work describes an exchange between the artist and his nephew Ali, who expressed his longing to escape war-torn Baghdad in a handwritten letter. After receiving the child’s message, Alfraji was haunted by the image of a small boat that Ali included so as to illustrate his dream of floating away from the devastation of Iraq after the 2003 invasion to the safety of the Netherlands where the artist is based. Weaving together a narrative of displacement with the imaginings of his nephew, Alfraji recounts his own visions of exile as marked by the recurring dream of returning to the Baghdad of his childhood while depicting the fantasy world of a boy who seeks to leave behind the calamity of war. Alfraji’s deeply personal graphic project offers a glimmer of hope during our prevalent dark times when the whole of the Middle East finds itself in a whirlpool of conflict, violence and migration.

'BULLDOZER’ Hany Rashed “BULLDOZER”, EGYPTIAN ARTIST HANY RASHED’S LATEST BODY OF WORK, CARRIES SOME “EARTHSHATTERING” UNDERTONES The series of paintings combines the use of manipulated plastic sheets with distorted images from various sources. The bulldozer is a recurring image in the technically strong pieces. It signifies deconstruction and changes taking over global society and people. Though presented in a satirical fashion and playful imaginings, “Bulldozer” is a very serious commentary on the cynicism in human interaction and social behavior today. The ongoing project expresses Rashed’s take on “evolution” through pop art, the relationship between East and West and his views on the dominance of the West in the era of globalisation. Despite the comic nature of these artworks, there are glaring tormented pictures of people and society in this series and throughout Rashed’s repertoire. Albeit gentle, Rashed’s Bulldozer is robust and can move mountains, if you’re willing to look closely enough.

JAPAN A Celebration Of Springtime

STORY AND IMAGES BY: PAVEL JIRAT

Spending my first days in Japan – unable to stop being amazed about how things work around; how clean the country is; and how incredibly polite the locals are – a thought flashed through my head: a visit to Japan should be a part of mandatory elementary education for every person on this planet. I believe, there is so much one could take from Japan. So much to learn. So much to see. Japan has always been on my list. But, as usual, some constraints came into mind. It is too far away. Language will be an issue. Weather is not good at this time. And so on. Well, after experiencing Japan, I discovered that none of those are true. Perhaps, except for the weather, which must be timed right. And that time is now – the spring.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN FULL BLOOM

VIBRANT GASTRONOMICAL DELIGHTS

Spring season in Japan is not too cold, but pleasantly breezy in some areas; and definitely not too humid and sticky, which is so typical of summertime.

Tokyo has absolutely excellent food selections, ranging from small street eateries, which are sort of hi-tech, and all the way up to Michelin-starred restaurants. It is not by chance that Japan has the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. People here do appreciate above-quality and sophistication.

The big reason for making spring the time to visit Japan is the much celebrated season of sakura or cherry blossoms. Japanese love them. Tourists love them. Everybody loves them. The bloom of sakura somehow illustrates happiness. Locals can simply spend hours gazing at the cherry blossoms and walking under their branches.

FROM NEON-LIT SKYSCRAPERS TO ANIME SHOPS For most of the tourists, the trip starts in Tokyo. Although huge, vast, and a bustling metropolis, it is not an intimidating place at all. It is well designed for walking around; and with its excellent public transportation, commuting is never tiresome. Taxi makes sense only after the metro’s closing hours. Bilingual signs make orientation pretty easy. And if you really get lost, the servicemen in the ticketing counter speak English and can assist you (this is almost a rule). One can easily spend the whole trip in Tokyo. There is so much to see and shop in. And good news for all shopaholics, shopping is not too expensive and the offers are amazing. Any designer brands can be found here. It seems that one of the niche businesses is the selling of pre-owned certified designer bags. There is a shop in nearly every street in the shopping district. But what is really amazing about Tokyo (and Japan in general) are the Japanese shops where you can buy things, which you never knew existed. We already know Daiso, which has outlets all around the UAE and other countries. Other interesting shops to try are Tokyo Hands, where you can find several stories of the weirdest, coolest articles; and Designwise, wherein the things are extremely practical and usable – kind of Scandinavian, but maybe a bit more “spiced up”.

Being used to the global Japanese vibe, most of us associate Japanese cuisine with sushi. Yes, it is, but it is not as common as you would expect. It is almost marginal. At least in Tokyo, this seems to be a case. Much more often, you are treated with amazing ramen (where there is eternal argument whether it is actually a Japanese or Chinese invention), stir-fries, baked fish and grilled meat. Grilled meat, especially the Kobe beef, is one of the best in the world. No wonder, these cows are literally being pampered. The result is stunning cuts of marble-like, thin slices of beef, which you can barbecue on table grills. It really is with Japan’s street food scene where you can experience authenticity in preparation, cooking and taste. It is always good to know someone local, because these kind of places are not used to catering foreigners. And the truth is, some foreigners are having a hard time to appreciate street food. Fried chicken skin and joints do not sound so appetising, but these are authentic food of Japan. For drinks, the real watering holes are where the working men meet every evening. After shots of too many drinks, their perfect business suits become wrinkled. And often, they are seen taking a break on a street or a park bench. Normally, most of them live 200 to 300 kilometres away and they take the bullet train to get home. In case they miss the last train, they spend the night in “capsule hotels” – big enough to let a man sleep, but not ideal for claustrophobic.

VENTURE OFF THE BEATEN PATH Another good idea is to go somewhere laid back, such as the city of Kanazawa. It is not very popular, but the atmosphere and touristic experiences are very Japanese. The city has an old castle surrounded by sakura. This is an elegant fortress that looks like from fairy tales. It also has an old samurai district with its typical wooden houses. Kanazawa is also known for its food culture, which includes sushi. After Kanazawa, you can go even low-key by travelling to a Japanese countryside surrounded by mountains. The local villages do not really resemble a typical village; they are rather big and very modern, but are still very nice retreats from the huge cities. It is strongly recommended to go to one of the places with onsen or hot spring spa, which really dot Japan due to its volcanic topography. Onsen is an experience you should not miss. The hot mineral water baths are a true balm for travellers’ tired body. However, if you happen to have a tattoo, you may not be let in (in Japan, tattoo is associated with yakuza or the local mafia). Often connected with onsen, there is the ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn that originated in the Edo period. This is something worth experiencing too, as the concept is very different. Forget about huge beds with fluffy duvets – ryokan is all about futons, which may be a bit hard, yet healthier.

THE ULTRA-URBAN SIDE Two days in the countryside and where is the city buzz? In Japan, it is never too far away. With bullet trains, you can go to another crowded metropolis within an hour. So, why not take a trip to Osaka? Osaka feels a little bit rougher than Tokyo, yet it is a cool and dynamic urban place. Less business, more hard work. Less posh, but still posh enough. The city has more interesting shops with the weirdest things to look at. There is a higher concentration of quirky places and quirky people. This is where the Japanese generation Y gets wild.

A JOURNEY TO THE “THOUSAND-YEAR CAPITAL” Kyoto is formerly an imperial capital for more than one thousand years. It is a city, which is very popular with tourists. Kyoto breathes history. It is well-preserved with samurai and geisha quarters. However, knowing Japan, one can also see a touch of modernity or hi-tech elements within this capital of imperial temples, palaces and gardens. And by the way, if you are a smoker, you might feel strange because it is not allowed to smoke in many streets in downtown. If you want to smoke, you need to go to smoking cabins or in one of the bars. The best way to bid goodbye to Japan is to say “See you later.” Yes, Japan is way too good for only one short visit.

YUKIKO TAKANO INTERNATIONAL SALES AGENT If you ever have a chance to visit Japan, I would recommend you to visit Tokyo and Kyoto. Here’s how many of my foreign friends spend time in Tokyo: stay at Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo; walk around Roppongi and Azabu areas; and have a wonderful sushi lunch in the nearby restaurant, Matsukan. The next best thing to do is to visit the Meiji Shrine to enjoy the beautiful nature and a touch of Japanese history and culture. If you are lucky, you will spot a traditional wedding ceremony! On the way to Kyoto, ride a bullet train and sit on the right side to capture a sight of Mt. Fuji. There are many places to visit in Kyoto, but my favorite is Arashiyama where you can walk in a small path of bamboo groove. For dinner, make sure to grab a bite at Great Kaiseki at Tempura Matsu.

AYAKO DOI EDITOR My top picks of must-visit places in Japan are Arashiyama in Kyoto, Miyajima in Hiroshima, ima and Karuizawa in Nagano, as well as Niseko in Hokkaido during winter. To experience the culture, I recommend “Yakatabune” evening dinner cruise on Tokyo Bay, Nuit Blanche Kyoto, and the Sapporo Snow Festival in Hokkaido. For gastronomic affairs, my favourite places in Tokyo are Café Kitsuné in Aoyama, Tofu Ryori Sorano in Ebisu, and SØHOLM in Tennozu Isle.

NAOHARU MOTOMATSU ARCHITECT For me, an unmissable experience in Japan is visiting the Shinjuku Golden Gai in Tokyo. It’s actually my favourite! Additionally, it’s also good to take a great cultural exploration on rediscovering Japanese denim – the history of the J world’s best denim. And for foodies, w I recommend any ramen or noodle shops in Tokyo. Japan is known for preparing authentic ramen, and I’m sure you can’t find any other best ramen from anywhere in the world except in Japan.

INSPIRING GARDENS

KAMELIA BIN ZAAL Green Fingers Kamelia bin Zaal is a remarkably talented woman. The creator of lush, beautfiul landscapes and gardens, bin Zaal is a UAE national who works with Al Barari as part of Green Works to design and realise areas of greenery that often take the breath away. Educated in Landscape Garden Design at London’s Inchbald School of Design, bin Zaal began working as a freelance garden designer. To those who know her, this surely came as no surprise, her love of all things green had been evident since her earliest years. “I have grown up watching my father in the garden. He has always loved flowers and the sense of peace a garden can give. I worked in the government for four years, and while I enjoyed it, I felt as if something was missing. At the time, my father was planning the concept of Al Barari, a plant nursery, and maybe a horticultural school, it was then that I thought of garden design. Within one month, I was at the Inchbald School of Design – studying garden design,” bin Zaal says with obvious passion. Bin Zaal’s next step was to start her own firm, Second Nature. However, the opportunities afforded by working with her family company, Al Barari, led her to join the business. “I returned to Dubai determined to create intuitive and stylised outdoor living spaces. I began my career as a freelance garden designer working on residential villas until I established my own landscape architectural practice, Second Nature, in 2006, working on both large commercial projects and unique residential projects. Later, I formed an association with my family’s property development company, Al Barari, where Second nature (which became part of Green Works) created the lush botanic surrounds and themed gardens that the address has become recognised for,” she said. After working for the family firm for eight years, bin Zaal left, setting out on her own again and restarting Second Nature. The winner of a number of international awards, and the creator of the inspiring ‘The Beauty of Islam’, bin Zaal’s designs are first rate. The Beauty of Islam pays homage to the glory and traditions of Islam, all set within a remarkable garden, as bin Zaal explains, “I wanted to design a garden that would have a positive effect on people’s perception of Islam and Arab culture. My aim was to share the positives of our religion and culture. To show how we also celebrate diversity, peace and harmony, as all religions do. With so much negativity in the media and the world today, this was an opportunity to share these values with the public through a garden design. The Chelsea Flower Show is the ideal platform.” While bin Zaal’s inspiration is clearly rooted in a love of plants and beauty, she also greatly admires His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his admiration for nature and the UAE. “My personal inspiration was His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His love of nature and his people has always been a priority. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan understood the importance of protecting our environment and that it was key to sustaining our community and to the growth of the country. If I can keep supporting this, even if it is in a small way, then I feel I have done something to make him proud. I want to honour his legacy in everything I do,” said bin Zaal. In a professional sense, bin Zaal’s interest and inspiration are distinctly European in origin, though her work is indisputably linked to the desires of her clients. Bin Zaal explains, “I don’t tend to follow trends or themes. Garden design is about your client and their desires and passions and translating that into a garden. I, however, have a distinct contemporary style to my designs – they are simple, linear and then balanced with soft planting. The current industry trends are all about a subtle palette that is quite Danish in style, dark greys and whites, with hints of colours in fabrics or feature walls. I find garden designs often reflect interiors in types of

finishes and tones. Gardens should be an extension of the inside and the Danish look is in right now from an interior perspective.” Danes aside, bin Zaal herself cites three designers who have shaped her view on what garden design should be, “Christopher Bradley-Hole has always been an inspiration to me. I have always admired his work since I started garden design. It’s the simplicity in his designs and how contemporary they are. I love his use of materials and particularly his planting style. Bradley-Hole actually has had ties with the UAE for a long time, having designed three gardens for His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, all of which won gold medals, including my favorite the Garden from the Desert in 2003. He has also designed the Wisdom Garden in Mushrif Central Park, Abu Dhabi, which is a stunningly beautiful garden celebrating the inspirational quotes of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Then, there’s Jamie Durie – it’s his clean lines and contemporary design that I love. He often uses materials in a unique way. His gardens are again simple and elegant. He has a great love for plants and a passion for design in general as he also designs furniture. Finally, I love the work of Bernard Trainor – his landscape designs sit so naturally into their surroundings and his planting is always impressive. His hard landscape elements are simple and again seem to sit within these beautifully planned naturalistic settings.” Bin Zaal’s Western influences are also apparent in her love of a Scottish garden: The Gardens of Portrack House by Charles Jencks and Maggie Keswick. “The design is based on the principles of Chinese Geomancy and their knowledge of the chaos theory. It’s so sculptural,” she says. Bin Zaal’s designs all carry a certain signature, replete with linear elements, they are certainly contemporary and exude a sense of softness that perfectly balances the angular elements. When asked about her favourite plant, bin Zaal smiles and answers immediately, “It’s the Bizmarckia nobilis, which was my feature palm at Chelsea Flower Show. I love its beautiful silver hue and simple majesty. It just naturally draws your eyes, as it’s so structural and architectural.” According to bin Zaal, the natural environment is so important to everyday life that a house is incomplete without a designed garden, that the garden should balance the home, creating a sense of union between the two. While each garden is unique, bin Zaal is keen to stress that each design is closely tied to the client’s brief, all are inspired by interior design, architecture and art. Bin Zaal never seems to sit still, she’s currently working on five projects, from a private penthouse to Nurai Island, a luxury resort in Abu Dhabi. “That’s what I love about my job – it’s never boring because you are constantly designing for different clients,” she says. The designer is still waiting to pull off her dream project, though, “I would love to work on a contemporary Islamic garden for the public to appreciate and enjoy.” Outside of work, bin Zaal is a lover of Dubai, “It’s our can-do attitude; nothing holds us back. It’s contagious, I think, for a lot of people who come here to live and work. Plus, there is such diversity of cultures - it’s like a melting pot. And the sun!” When she’s not working, the designer enjoys an active life, “I love to trek, travel and I am an amateur photographer. I have been on two Gulf For Good trips – to Kilimanjaro and Borneo. This April, I am hoping to do the Gulf For Good challenge to Bhutan. What’s better than combining a love of trekking, travelling and charity work?” An inspiring individual, bin Zaal seems set to go from strength to strength.

DANIELA VINCENZ Golden Touch

gulfsothebysrealty.com

The work of Daniela Vincenz crosses boundaries as the prodigiously talented artist creates paintings and jewellery, showcasing her remarkable skills across distinctly different media. Hailing from Switzerland, Daniela Vincenz is a trained goldsmith and self-taught, talented painter. With a background in classic jewellery and luxury design, her paintings focus on the creation of contemporary elements and the attraction of colour and shape. Vincenz’s most recent work focuses on the beauty of the human body as she works in acrylic on canvas. Vincenz has always been an artist and since her younger days she has never stopped creating. A painter and a goldsmith, it wasn’t until she moved to the UAE that she was fully able to explore her talents. “There was never a period in my life without drawing and painting, but I can`t remember one in particular, when does it start to become art? I’ve lived in the UAE for 10 years and I have found a way of working in two fantastic destinations. The contrast between the two countries gives me a lot of energy. In Switzerland, I like to work in my profession as a goldsmith, where I combine design with handcrafted three-dimensional jewellery in precious materials. Back in Dubai, I can “go wild” and spread colour on huge canvases. I feel very privileged being able to do both and enjoy bringing art to life in small and large dimensions,” says Vincenz. Vincenz’s portraits are the central subjects of her works and recurring themes include abstract landscapes, animals and groups of people. The artist’s technique appears to be unique and has developed over the years. She’s reticent when it comes to describing how she creates her pieces, saying “How do I do it? There are a few secrets I have to hold back, don’t you think?”

"There is nothing more inspiring than living in Dubai! The multi-cultural mix is amazing and gives me the input for 'Global Faces'."

The artist’s latest collection is titled ‘Global Faces’ and is made up of a series of portraits. “There is nothing more inspiring than living in Dubai!” says Vincenz. “The multi-cultural mix and variety of faces are amazing and give me the input for Global Faces. My portraits are like fractions of a second, a blink of an eye, a face in the crowd. Catching the expression of the moment and the attempt to fix it on canvas in my own interpretation gives me satisfaction and, also, fun.” The portraits contain both men and women, though the latter represents the majority of the subjects. Vincenz claims that women’s faces are easier to find in the crowd and that their faces often form wonderful reference points for her work. Each portrait contains strong emotion and the artist brings this out through bold use of color on the huge canvases she typically uses, expressing everything, from passion to joy, exhaustion and desperation to satisfaction. Two pieces, titled Lan and Juan, sit in Vincenz’s personal collection and she has a sentimental connection with the two pieces, “In every collection, I have one or two pieces I am very much attached to. I am not keen to sell them; I just want to keep them in my private collection,” she says. Vincenz is currently in the process of selling her penthouse after living in Dubai for 10 years. “The city is vibrant and tremendously visionary. I enjoyed witnessing what Dubai has achieved in the last 10 years and, simply, being part of it,” she says. “Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), in general, is a great neighbourhood. It has a real feeling of community and everything is close by.”

Vincenz’s penthouse is certainly unique, as you might expect from such a creative talent. “So far, I haven’t mentioned this other passion of mine. For friends and myself, I enjoy designing interiors. So, everything, I did it myself. Over the years, I collected furniture, fabrics and decorations from around the world. I love to put together different kind of styles from different decades. It’s quite a challenge, but makes a home unique and gives a very personal touch and warm feeling.” Despite leaving Dubai, Vincenz is certainly going to miss, in her words, “The outstanding view over the sea, the marina and the whole JLT community – especially by night, it is unbeatable.” Vincenz worked with Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty and Senior Global Property Consultant, Christine Park, when putting her penthouse up for sale, “From the very beginning, I felt very confident and in good hands with Christine. She is such a likeable person and it is very easy to work with her! The promotion and advertising for the penthouse are fantastic and professionally done. We highly recommend her and Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty.” Wherever she may end up, Vincenz certainly has a bright future.

Designed by Masamichi Katayama, the interiors feature unique elements that come together to form a lounge environment that is true to the heritage of the UAE. The white ceiling is inspired by Dubai’s rolling dunes and the intricate bamboo façade creates a delightful interplay of light and shadow, creating a light, relaxing space. Lexus-inspired details are everywhere, for example the bamboo is punctuated by holes in the shape of Lexus’ famous spindle grilles in a subtle touch. Intersect’s cuisine focuses on light, simple food in an authentic experience that elevates the art of handmade, straightforward food. Chef Tomas Reger works with handpicked ingredients, including organic foods and unique, fair trade coffees. The sunken kitchen and the elevated chef’s station provide a spectacle and the entire experience feels real and open. RAW Coffee Company has partnered with Intersect to offer two unique blends and the wine list is handpicked by award winning sommelier Sarah Belangerto to perfectly complement Chef Reger’s dishes. It’s clear that Intersect is living up to its name,

bringing food, wine and more together perfectly. On the first floor, guests will find Intersect’s curated library, which features an impressive collection of English, Arabic and Japanese literature. The books are shelved in six minimalist columns which perfectly blend tradition and Lexus’s design philosophy. The highlight of Intersect has to be the Garage, a 500-square-foot garage and event space full of Lexus car parts and the brand’s latest concept cars. A wall of miniature cars rounds out the display, along with two special vehicles, the LFA No. 14 driven at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2009, and the LEXUS LX, the luxury SUV flagship model, both of which are signed by Tokuo Fukuichi, President of Lexus International and Omar Al Futtaim, Vice Chairman of Al-Futtaim. Rounding out the experience is Crafted for Lexus, a niche boutique a collection of contemporary lifestyle from traditional Japanese artisans and young designers; pieces such as Roberu travel bags, Kaneko Opticals sunglasses, Sphelar Power handy lights and more will be available for purchase. A unique venue, Intersect by Lexus is certainly worth a visit.

PROFILE

CHRISTINE PARK Personal Touches Christine Hyoungsook Park, a Senior Global Property Consultant with Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty, brings personal design flair to her work and imbues her working relationships with dedication, commitment and first class service. Park, from South Korea, has also lived and worked in North America, Germany, Japan and Vietnam. She moved to Dubai in 2010 and since then has built a property portfolio in prestigious residential communities including Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Golf Estates. “Not all of my previous jobs were in the real estate envionment, but they all helped to inform me of the merits of good planning, knowing one’s subject, communicating, listening to others and the importance of a professional level of service,” says Park. She achieved her Master’s Degree in International Relations, has worked in broadcasting and the media, managed a sailing club for expats and was responsible for organising and hosting numerous international sailing and cultural events in South Korea. Park advanced her career in international property sales and investment as a consequence of her interest in real estate. Her overseas connections, primarily in Northeast Asia, provide an advantage in her role as a Senior Global Property Consultant within Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty. Despite having a varied professional past, Park loves the real estate industry, “Real estate is a diverse profession, so I enjoy the variety of projects, the variety of people involved, the evolution of a development from design to completion, the clients I work for, the enthusiasm of my co-workers and the management, the need for flexible and creative thinking and of course selling! That’s the hard part, but I do enjoy seeing the closure of the sales process and the handing over of keys,” she says. “Enthusiasm, energy, information, knowing when to talk and to not talk, knowing one’s subject and being impartial about advice and also working up a close and trust based relationship,” all these make for a great real estate agent, according to Park. The key to being a successful agent is communicating regularly with clients and fulfilling their needs based on trust and integrity, “I would hope that my clients would appreciate my efforts and trust my information and guidance and that they remember

me kindly and thought of me as a very determined and professional person, who listened intently,” Park says. “I love working in the real estate industry as it brings me close to the design environment anyway. Moreover, I get to work with extremely creative and talented people. You never know, I might just surprise myself one day and become more involved in interior design.” Interior design is more than a hobby for Park. She designed the interiors of her own home and executed her ideas to an extremely high standard, and a creative element is clear to see in her approach to work. “I love design and the ways that materials are put together, and these relate both to home interiors and fashion. I pick up my ideas from observation. My previous home in Jumeirah Islands was an eclectic mix of Vietnamese style fused with modern-contemporary. My interior design somehow worked and helped in selling that villa. If I could visit my younger self and provide some advice, I might push that younger self towards design so it could be a future option for me. However, I was not pushed enough as a young teenager and, like many Koreans, took a more traditional route towards a career. Of course, now that I’m a Senior Global Property Consultant at Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty, I still get the opportunity to see homes with stunning interior design, as well as help my clients with their choices. My family and I have recently moved to a beautiful villa in Lime Tree Valley and I have spent the last month creating a new feel to the villa – it has been rewarding and I just love living there,” Park says, with enthusiasm shining through. Outside of work, Park enjoys sailing and Pilates, she cherishes a balanced life and appreciates high fashion, gourmet food and camping in the middle of desert with family and close friends. “My favourite and the place I find most interesting in Dubai (apart from La Petit Maison) is a toss-up between being on a beach at sunset at The Jetty Lounge at The Royal Mirage, or being in the desert as the sun sets or rises. It is a special place and a unique experience. We Koreans have mountains, forests, sea and grass so we love the contrast of the stark beauty of the desert environment. It is lovely to be there with friends and family and just chill out under the stars, although, I’m always the first to fall asleep by the fire,” she says.

With a passion for sailing, Park is never far from the sea, “Sailing is an amazing experience and once hooked, it is difficult to give up. I began sailing at an early age, so it is in my blood now. The whole environment of boats and water, as well as the sounds, smell and the views of the ocean are thrilling. It is a very physical and emotional place to be when sailing on a full rig with wind in the hair. Yes, I sound a bit poetic. It is like riding a horse or skiing in terms of the physicality and the closeness to nature,” she says. Finally, sailing brought Park and her husband together through a fortuitous chance encounter, “My husband saved me from potentially drowning (before he was my husband), whilst sailing in Korea – yes, I married a hero! My friends actually say that I saved him, though,” she said. Outgoing, engaging and knowledgeable, Park is the perfect fit for Gulf Sotheby’s International Realty.

"Real estate is a diverse profession, so I enjoy the variety of projects, the variety of people involved, the evolution of a development from design to completion, the clients I work for"
