GUNGAHLIN COMMUNITY COUNCIL INC.
Objectives The Gungahlin Community Council core objective is: "To preserve and improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental well-being of Gungahlin and the Gungahlin Community." To achieve these objectives the Council undertakes to: ?
? ?
?
? ?
consult with members of the Gungahlin community; represent the Gungahlin community, and lobby authorities on the community's behalf; provide a non-political environment where members of the community can express their aspirations, concerns and suggestions; provide a public forum where members of the community can obtain information, support and opportunities to network with others; advise, support and/ or assist any organisation with compatible objectives to those that have been adopted by the Council; liaise with members of the public, legislators, officials and community representatives; and to provide appropriate information and opinions on matters relevant to the Gungahlin community.
All people who live or work in Gungahlin who are over the age of 16 years may become members. We encourage you to take an active part in your community’s welfare. One way to do that is to attend monthly meetings, to share your views on how best to achieve these aims.
GUNGAHLIN DRIVE EXTENSION Gungahlin residents continue to wait for the result of yet another court appeal on 11 May 05 by Save the Ridge group who have strongly opposed the building of this necessary road. We trust that this will be the last delay before any more money is wasted. The Canberra Times 12 May reported that “A number of court delays have already resulted in the cost of the road project blowing out by more than $16 million, with the estimated cost now upwards of $86 million”. Justice Anthony Whitlam found in January that GDE-related activity by the National Capital Authority did not amount to an ‘action’ which damaged the environment, contrary to environment protection laws. Milko Fact No. 10: The FRESHEST milk in Canberra is only Milko home delivered. Every shop that sells milk from the smallest convenience store to the biggest supermarket has to store the fresh milk out the back until they’ve sold their older milk first. This sometimes takes days. Your local milko picks it up from the factory and delivers it straight to your door. And yesterday? It was probably still in the cow! Get the best milk home delivered (with no delivery fees) at almost the same prices as the supermarket generics. Call Garry on 0421 704 844 or leave your daytime number with a message on 6258 4994. Want to find out more, then please call 6258 6518 PALMERSTON HALL NEWS As has previously been reported in Gunsmoke a new permanent hall to replace the demountable building is to be built in Palmerston. (See figure left, below). We had hoped by now that the old building would have been removed to make way for the new construction. Ian and Sally Ruecroft and Roma Hosking in consultation with users of the hall have had meetings with Arthur Rizzo, Peter Johns and others from Capital Work and Dr Murray Coleman FRAIA, the architect, to devise a very suitable facility. A budget of one million dollars had been allocated in last year’s budget to build a new hall. Unfortunately the design (below right) was costed as being approximately $350,000 above budget so we made representation to the ACT Government to have the extra money allocated in this year’s budget. This was not granted so the larger facility will not be built at this stage. We are still hopeful that in the future the hall with the sprung floor and the entrance porch may be added. The costing is still tight and some landscaping as well as other details may have to be trimmed. We feel sure that the new building, once built , will ease the pressure for much needed community space in Gungahlin. Stage 1 below left, Stage 2 below right.

handshake, fro m towels, clothes or bed linen, or even worse from the smoke of a bonfire in which there are leaves of poison ivy.
BY LISA KAVENEY I just love the relatively new murder mystery of the same name that portrays two lady gardeners as amateur sleuths. In some cases I think gardeners are better qualified than most to play detective.
So before you think of gardening as a nurturing, growing caring kind of sport, it would be worth considering what lurks in the shadows. JOBS FOR MAY
More often than not their habits are slow and observant, usually well placed to watch comings and goings over the garden fence or to overhear arguments through open French windows. And most interesting of all, gardeners inhabit a world where the benign appearance of things can turn ugly, and where what appears to delight you could just as easily kill you.
* Fertilise fruit trees * Prune hydrangeas * Separate crowded succulents and re-pot as needed * Take note of the autumn colours of trees in local gardens - and store the information for future use, or buy them now when in colour * Lift and store dahlia tubers * Take cuttings of correas and croweas * Plant spring bulbs, including daffodils, jonquils, hyacinth and scilla * Aerate and fertilise lawns * Take cuttings fro m roses and keep deadheading. Plant winter and spring seedlings * Buy or order bare rooted shrubs, ornamental and fruit trees * Get your vegie garden going- now's the time to plant cabbage, silver beet and broccoli seedlings. * Last mo nth to plant spring bulbs- except tulips which go in at the end of the month * Prune old-fashioned bush and climbing roses * Plant seedlings of hollyhock, stock, lupins and Canterbury bells. * Dead-head sasanqua camellias as flowers finish * Cut down perennials * Prepare beds for new roses -- digging in cow manure is a good option * Reduce watering of indoor plants * Plant liliums and Kangaroo paw
Murderers, for many centuries, have employed the poisonous properties of plants to carry out their crimes. Imagine the fun or perhaps sinister nature of creating a poisoner's garden, a slap in the face to all that meaningless beauty we are taught to admire. It would be far from gloomy; many of our most admired pants are excruciatingly toxic. For starters the divinely scented Daphne, only requires 12 berries from the mezereum species to completely knock you off your perch. Then there is peach blossom and the potential for prussic acid, which you make from peach kernels. Oleander is poisonous in all its parts, and in classic times it was a favoured way of disposing of unwanted s pouses. Although it was thought of as a rather vulgar poison and people of high rank preferred hemlock. Foxgloves, lily-o f-the-valley, Cyclamen and the opium poppy must all have a place in any collection of the terrifyingly toxic. At the moment we have the divine Autumn crocus appearing around the garden. Their innocent demeanour belies a criminal character. The bulbs taste quite pleasant, but if you were to eat one it would strangle you from the inside and kill you within a day. Cow's milk is the antidote, just in case you wanted to try it out. The poison prize must go to the deadly nightshade family, aptly named don't you think? Even its Latin name, Atropa Bella Donna, carries eerie associations. Linnaeus called it after Atropos, the third of the Fates, who cut the thread of life with her shears, and stood for the irremediable end of all things. Extract of the plant will dilate the pupils of the eye and was much in demand by ladies of fashion for cosmetic reasons, hence 'belladonna'. I think perhaps the most potentially lethal plant would have to be America's virulent poison ivy. Rhus radicans is still as common as when it surprised the first settlers on the eastern seaboard. You only have to touch a broken leaf from which the sap has exuded, to enter a realm of desperate suffering. First you go red, then blister and itch intolerably. If you scratch and put your fingers elsewhere, you will infect some other part of your body. It is incredibly easy to collect the poison in your travels, such as a log you brushed against of a pair of boots that have walked through it. You can catch it from a P 12
Indicators: Community Facilities (Social Investment) One of the important tasks of government is the fair and equitable allocation and financing of community facilities. Governments are increasingly recognizing that to be accountable they must not only be fair in the allocation of resources but be seen to be fair. Within the ACT one way that the government could be seen to be fair would be to establish numerical indicators that gives the community a rough idea on how fairly community resources are distributed. Such indicators are never complete, can always be criticized and should never be taken too literally but they can show gross distortions in the allocation of resources within communities. The ACT government is urged to establish such a set of simple inexpensive indicators and include them in the budget estimates. Easily calculated measures are the following per 1,000 population in the geographic area being considered. ? Open space in hectacres

These measures can be made for different suburbs and for different groups of suburbs such as Belconnen, Gungahlin, North Canberra, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong, South Canberra, and for areas like Queanbeyan and Yass and Campbell Town etc. From these measures citizens could get an indication of whether community resources are “fairly” distributed. The residents of Gungahlin feel that almost all if not all community service indicators for Gungahlin are much lower than other areas of Canberra and even worse they see little indication in the budget estimates that these indicators are likely to improve – rather they see with the increase in population that the indicators are getting progressively worse. The Who, What and Why of Cramps Muscle cramps are painful, involuntary muscle contractions that occur suddenly and can be temporarily debilitating. The most common sites for cramps are in the calf muscles, but they may however occur in any other muscle. Theories as to the cause of cramps are many and varied and include; 1. Dehydration Water is an important part of any athlete’s diet. Under normal circumstances, dehydration is not very likely to occur however the reverse is true for people participating in sporting activities. Thirst is an indicator that most athletes use to make them aware that they need to rehydrate their body. This however is a very poor indicator and athletes especially should be taking in fluid regularly. Below is an example of the amount of fluid one should be taking on the day of a soccer match; ? ½ litre of water upon waking up that morning ? 1 cup of water every 20 minutes leading up to the game ? as much water as they can drink during the game without feeling bloated ? after the game, 1 glass of water every 20 minutes until their urine is clear 2. Low sodium or potassium levels. 3. Low magnesium levels. This is one of the more common causes. Magnesium is found in fresh vegetable such as broccoli, whole grains, seeds, such as nuts, soybeans, pumpkin seeds or as a dietary supplement. 4. Low calcium levels. Calcium is vital for normal muscle activity and the average person should be having 4 serves of calcium per day which is equivalent to approximately 1000mg per day. 5. Excessive consumption of soft drink containing caffeine, coffee or tea leads to excessive fluid loss and dehydration.
6. Inadequate carbohydrate intake. A high carbohydrate meal should be eaten 2-3 hours before exercise. 7. Excessively tight muscles can lead to cramping during physical activity. If this is the case then the affected area needs to be stretched and treated. Treatment involves evaluation as to the cause of the cramps eg. Biomechanical dysfunction of the surrounding joints. Please note that “true” muscle cramping must also be distinguished from cramp-like muscle pain that can be referred from the lumbar spine (lower back). The cause of cramps should always be evaluated by a Sports Chiropractor who can take the appropriate course of action. By Peter Garbutt
