LINEAR PARK IN THE TOWN SQUARE There is a proposal to develop a Linear Park between the ‘G Coles’ building and the area where Star bucks is situated (see photos below). It is our hope that this Park will be a safe play area for families with young children; that it will be a pleasant ‘time out’ area and a suitable place for outdoor eating with a water feature. The water feature has been dropped because of the drought. Shade structures as well as trees and shrubs need to be included. ACTPLA submissions closed on 1 Dec 06.
GCC Public Meeting Venue: Palmerston Community Centre Tiptree Cr Palmerston (next to shops)
All welcome
The Gungahlin Town Square and linear park was originally proposed to be an exciting community hub that would provide a meeting place and an atmosphere that would encourage outdoor markets, entertainment, dining, community events and networking, with quality childrens’ play areas. The design and establishment of the Gungahlin Town Centre Square has the potential to be the most important thing that is going to happen in Gungahlin for the next ten years.
Next meeting: Wednesday Wed 13 Feb - 7.30pm Agenda: TBA Wednesday 14 March 07 - 7.30 pm
Ian Ruecroft said “There is a need to involve the community in the design of this project to ensure that the Gungahlin Town Square and linear park incorporates all of the attributes associate with providing the community with something we can all be proud of. Over the years there have been many discussions relating to this project; however, the current proposal was developed in isolation and appears to have disregarded all of these suggestions. It is time for the planning and development agencies to move out from their desks and into the community, in an effort to produce a planning concept (for the Gungahlin Town Square and linear park) that has a bit of character, purpose and life. The current proposal can only be described as mediocre.”
due out in April 2007. Email: - romahos@bigpond.net.au

Turtles on Roads in Gungahlin The proximity of suburbs to nature reserves, parks, and golf courses brings the natural environment within reach of Gungahlin’s residents, but this proximity occasionally results in unfortunate consequences, such as when wildlife are hit by vehicles on roads. Researchers at the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra have initiated a study to examine the effects of road mortality on long-necked turtles. We are hoping to enlist the support of the community in mapping the locations where turtles cross roads in the Gungahlin region. You can help by contacting us if you encounter a turtle on the road. We do not want to encourage you to attempt to rescue or capture the turtle, as this may be dangerous on a busy road. All we need from you is 1) the road name, 2) an approxi mate location on the road (e.g the nearest landmark), 3) the date, and 4) whether the turtle was alive, had overt signs of serious injury, or was dead. Please contact either Martha Rees or John Roe via email: turtleteam@aerg.canberra.edu.au or phone: 0412001746 if you have seen a turtle. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

ACT
news & information New Youth Detention Centre will benefit Gungahlin In November 2005 the ACT Government announced that the new Youth Detention Centre would be located at Mitchell, east of Flemington Road on the planned Sandford Street extension.
It is planned as a small town or village, with separate zones for ‘public’ and ‘private’ activities. The access roads and car parking are provided outside the secure perimeter. The total site area including the buffer zone is 11.6ha.
Over the past few months, the project team led by the Architectural firm Perumal Pedavoli have continued to work on the design of the new Youth Detention Centre. Perumal Pedavoli has developed a design which supports young people, their families and the community while addressing the recommendations in the Human Rights Audit of Quamby Youth Detention Centre.
The design will offer an opportunity to share some with the wider community. The Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services (DHCS) is reviewing the way the facility can be shared with the community without compromising security. Local community representatives, government staff and other stakeholders have contributed to the design of the new Youth Detention Centre. The issues that influenced the design included physical and mental health, education and training, as well as indigenous, family and gender considerations.
The agreed Site Planning Layout is based on five key site planning principles: § Zones within the site; § A pedestrian focused centre; § Integrating outdoor spaces; § Community connections; and, § Allowing for future expansion.
The Development Application was formally lodged with the ACT Planning and Land Authority and decision is expected in February.
The new Youth Detention Centre will comprise residential, education & training, recreation, administration and other support facilities enclosed by a secure perimeter.
The next stage is the construction of the new Youth Detention Centre.
Letters to Editor Hi Roma, Can you please pose my question below to the appropriate authority:“Why are the wooden slat foot bridges around Yerrabi Pond being coated in tar and large gauge gravel?” The slat bridges around Yerrabi Pond were passable for roller bladers and small children on foot scooters, however the introduction of the tar and gravel coating means it is impassable for roller-bladers and difficult (if not dangerous) to children on scooters. Can this approach to protect the wooden bridges please be reconsidered to cater for the communities recreational life style and safety concerns ? Sincerely M.Coster. Dear Roma, On behalf of Anglicare I would like to apologise for the mess that has surrounded our clothing bins in Gungahlin and other parts of Canberra over the past few weeks. Anglicare appreciates the generous donation of goods by those who are seeking to assist others in need and has acted quickly to clean up around its bins. The Christmas period, combined with some staff shortages, made it difficult for us to undertake the weekly clearance which is part of our normal service. Regularly weekly clearance of Anglicare’s charity bins has resumed. Yours sincerely, Keith Waters, CEO Anglicare Canberra and Goulburn PO BOX 265 Mitchell ACT 2911 Tel 6220 8100 Fax 6242 0914
Further information on the new Youth Detention Centre can be accessed on www.dhcs.act.gov.au or by e-mail DHCSYouthDetentionCentre@act.gov.au or telephone 6205 0313 Dear Editor and Executive Members of GCC RE: Lease Variation Public Notice Block 1 Section 4 Gungahlin 10 Gribble St I wish to bring attention to the council that Block 1 Section 4 Gungahlin 10 Gribble St was sold for the purpose of bulky goods. I understand that the owner is trying to vary the lease to include shops/ restaurants/ etc... as on the notice. ...If this is to happen then it is against the original purpose allocated for this bloc ie bulky goods. We need to have more bulky goods outlets here in Gungahlin to save Gungahlin people having to travel to Fyshwick to buy bulky goods, and to bring greater retail variety into the Town Centre. The Gungahlin population is still not big enough to have more restaurants, coffee shops etc as there are already plenty with some premises still vacant in the ALDI block. This lease variation will flood the commercial market within the town centre. Also those empty commercial blocks allocated for future commercial uses (cinema, entertainment centre, etc...) adjacent to ALDI and COLES may be delayed in development due to this lease variation. This will further cause unbalance in terms of variety and cause disadvantage for the local people of Gungahlin. Although the objection deadline was 21 Nov 06 I hope you will support my concerns about this lease variation. Best regards Tien Do 0421 022 977

NAB OPENS NEW LOOK STORE IN GUNGAHLIN To officially launch the new look store, Commonwealth Games champion Scott Martin, kick started a day of celebrations on Saturday 16 December. To reinforce NAB’s commitment to the local community over $2,000 was donated to local sporting and community groups and four lucky winners shared $2,500 in prizes.
In December, National Australia Bank (NAB) unveiled a new concept in banking at Gungahlin, taking NAB staff from behind the counter into a more open plan environment to interact with customers. The new $1million open plan store at Gungahlin Market Place features new technology and brings the number of stores in the ACT to 12 branches employing over 125 people.
To contact the branch call 6204 3400.
Colin Larter, Store Manager at NAB Gungahlin, said the store incorporates new technology and design developments and reinforces NAB’s desire to create a great place to bank for customers and fantastic place to work for staff. “NAB Gungahlin is about creating a positive retail banking shopping experience by breaking down traditional barriers so our staff can focus on having great conversations with our customers. The new look store has been a great hit.” Mr Larter said. New concepts and technology at NAB Gungahlin include an open-plan environment; no longer behind a desk or counter, the NAB team sit side-by-side with customers. Customers have 24 hour access to a convenient change station and coins can be deposited via the Business Change facility within the NAB Fast Service area, which includes an ATM.
Photo above: NAB staff with Mr Zed Seselja Liberal MLA for Molongolo.
With the click of a button, customers can search for information on interactive, touch-screen kiosks and pay bills, do Internet banking and conduct searches on financial topics at the Web kiosk Making transactions faster and easier, customers can ‘scan’ and deposit bags and envelopes any time with immediate acknowledgement at the Cash Deposit Machine. Loose coins can be deposited either for credit into an account or receiving cash in the branch. We offer:
A new conversation area enables customers to sit down with the NAB team in a relaxed environment and flat screen televisions complement information-rich displays.

The Gungahlin store offers customers a one-stop financial shop, including onsite Personal Banker, Anita Kelly, who can discuss and assess all customers Home Loan requirements and dedicated Wealth Adviser, Marina Gray, who can offer investment and wealth creation advice. “By offering an open, inviting space, the store gives customers a greater opportunity to identify and achieve their financial goals, and a more efficient way of banking,” added Mr Larter.

Enjoying summer with your pets With the warmer weather here, here are some considerations for your pets’ health and comfort: Ø If your pet had fleas last summer, now is the time to make sure your flea prevention regime is in full swing. Regular use of a flea preventative such as Frontline® on the pet, as well as thorough cleaning of affected areas in the home, will break the flea lifecycle and allow your pet to have an itch-free summer. If you have any questions about fleas and flea prevention, contact us at the Hospital, or read the advice on our website, www.gungahlinvet.com.au, under ‘Info’. Ø With the onset of summer come grass seeds, which can be a real problem for pets. To prevent painful grass seed abscesses, consider having long-haired cats and dogs clipped off, and check your pet’s body regularly, paying attention to between the toes, under the collar, in ears etc. Ø If you’re taking your pet/s to the coast, paralysis tick prevention is an absolute must – see www.gungahlinvet.com.au/info for information on the various options, or talk to us. Ø When you slip-slop-slap before going outside, remember that pets can suffer from the heat too. Always carry water for dogs on walks and allow them rest times in shade. Ensure pets left at home have shelter from the sun and several sources of cool, fresh water. Under no circumstances should a pet be left inside a car, even for a short space of time. Is your pet microchipped? Microchipping is the only permanent and unalterable form of identification and provides the best chance of a speedy reunion should your pet ever go missing. However, the system only works if the microchip registry has your correct contact details on it. If we microchipped your pet and you have moved or changed phone numbers, please update your details on the register by visiting http://www.car.com.au and clicking on the “Update your details here!” link or by calling Central Animal Records on 1800 333 202. If your pet was microchipped in NSW, their mic rochip number needs to be added to the national registry – we can organise this for you. P12

All it takes is a patch of soil, (1m by 3m is enough to provide a family with salads nearly all year) and the right planning and planting. There are a handful of basic thing to remember if you want salad greens over the longest possible season. Some greens are heat tolerant while others are cold tolerant: some grow fast for a single harvest, while others let you harvest leaf by leaf over a long season. The key is to choose the right king of g reens for the season and not to plant fast growing and long season greens in the same section. The next trick is called succession planting, and it works like this: plant the seeds in one area, when those seeds germinate to about 2cm, sow another area. Each time one area grows about 2cm sow another area. By staggering the plantings, you’ll always have one plot of fresh greens ready for picking and more on the way. Keep in mind that salad greens in shade will have a milder flavour than those grown in hot sun, and that greens harvested young will be more tender than those allowed to grow larger. While some gardeners harvest their greens when barely more than sprouts, a good balance can be found in harvesting at the 10 to 20cm stage. Grasp a handful of tops, and cut with scissors about 2cm above the soil so they are able to re-sprout.

Soil Prep This is always the most important no matter what season. Turn the soil with a garden fork, break up the clumps and spread 2.5cm of dried manure over the top. Work in lightly until the surface is granular but not smooth. Distribute seeds evenly across the area, about 3cm apart. Settle seed into the granular gaps in the soil surface. You can use a garden rake as long as you are careful not to move the seeds around too much. Water the bed lightly to prompt germination. The seeds should germinate in 3 to 7 days, depending on the season. When an area of greens begins to look tired, clear the section and repeat the prep and plant process.

Rev. Mark Faulkner – Uniting Church Minister – Gungahlin. Hello to readers of Gunsmoke. I have just arrived to be the new Uniting Church Minister for Gungahlin. Over the past 7 1/2 years I have been in Wagga Wagga as the Uniting Church Minister and prior to that in Tenterfield, northern NSW. However before those placements I studied at ANU and worked at the National Gallery before moving into my theological study and ministry with the Uniting Church. Returning to Canberra after many years in other places is exciting. To be working in the new community of Gungahlin with diverse people of age and background is a great opportunity. Over the past years in my work with the Uniting Church I have enjoyed being part of the wider community in different ways and working closely with other Christian denominations. I look forward to building new relationships over the months and years ahead and to meeting community leaders and the priests, ministers and pastors of other churches or religious groups. The Uniting Church in Gungahlin meets on Sunday mornings at 9.30m at Ngunnawal Primary School and we seek to be an inclusive and relaxed community as we spend time considering the questions of life and the presence of God within our lives. As a growing church we have many families with young children, families with teenage children, single men and women, as well as couples who are drawing close to retirement or who have reached retirement. This is a reflection of the wider community of Gungahlin. It is my hope that our church will be able to be a growing presence within this community providing opportunities for support, care, friendship, intelligent reflection on life, and meaningful worship of Jesus Christ. There are challenges for us all in life as well as for the growing and changing community in which we live. It is my vision that the Uniting Church in Gungahlin will continue to live out and reflect the presence of Christ for us all in the midst of both the challenges and joys that life brings. Peace to you all. Rev. Mark Faulkner.
