CENTER FOR EXPERIMENTAL MEDIA AND PERFORMANCE 48-205 Phase 3 GUNN CHAIYAPATRANUN JEFF KING Model at 1’= 1/16” scale
In this phase, I focused on the proportions and the boundaries of my project. Believing that the center should be a display shelf for new media, I decided that the building should be toned down even to the point that the building itself becomes a ghost or a temporary shell in which the new media that is displayed becomes the main focal point. For the new boundaries, I extended the second level and the levels above to cover the top of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s vestibule/lobby. This not only allows users of the center to use the original walls of the adjacent building (previously thought that the KST’s wall height was uniform the entire length), but also allows for enough space to make an atrium that connects the three floors and lets natural light into the space.
My main struggle with this is with modulating the space in a way that allows the users to be able to adjust the size, openness or brightness of a space according to their needs. Right now, all of the spaces are large, bright and transparent or public, creating a series of essentially very monotonous spaces. To improve in the next phase, a secondary membrane within the building envelop and interior partition walls will be considered.
One of the main focuses or points of resolution is the black box, which as described in previous phrases, is half submerged, with the top third operable and level with grade. At this level, a mesh balcony above the modeled pipe grid will allow people to walk above the theater when events or exhibitions are held in the theater space. The theater floor is imagined to be composed of hollow boxes that can be reconfigured for different stage and seating setups for different effects.
The top image is demonstrating the feel of letting light in from the operable first level which could happen during intermission for performances but also during times when the theater is not being used as a blakc box, but perhaps an event or exhibition space. the bottom image is an experiment with putting a glass ceiling onto the black box that can be open or shut at will. This will allow even more light to enter the theater space in addition to the side panels.

This set of plans and section are representative of the current organization of programs, and shows the building’s relationship with its site context. It includes changes such as slight changes in floorplate shapes and sizes and most noticeably, the stretching on to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater.
