A million shillings Escape from Somalia

by Alixandra Fazzina

The Horn of Africa is an assembly point for thousands of men, women and children fleeing from war, abuse and hunger. This is the place from where they hope to find a better life. And there is only one way out: across the Gulf of Aden. Alixandra Fazzina, member of NOOR images and winner of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award, followed these emigrants at close quarters and saw the world in its purist form; that of life and death.

shaped by war

by Don McCullin

Don McCullin covered almost every major conflict of the late 20th century. To mark his 75th birthday, the Imperial War Museum North (UK) presented an ambitious overview of his career, including many items on public display for the very first time. To accompany this exhibition, McCullin's little known colour work has been reproduced, alongside pages from the magazines and an assemblage of his personal material and documents: his cameras, boots and helmet, numerous passports and photographs of him at work on the battlefield, together with illuminating personal correspondence. McCullin has been shaped by war, there is no mistake about that. Sized to match the original Sunday Times Magazine, where so much of his work first appeared, this book is a mesmerising and moving record of conflict and battle. Not the ultimate photo book, but an unmissable read for his fans. Hardback 208 pages 324 x 256 mm Jonathan Cape, 2010 ISBN 0224090267 Interview with McCullin on Shaped by War: â‚Ź30 / ÂŁ25 / $40 http://north.iwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.24321/ 3

B-40, USA/Vietnam The B-40 antipersonnel mine is a Vietnamese adaption of the BLU-24/B US-made cluster bomb. When activated, the homemade mine contains enough explosive and fragmenting pieces to blow off a leg. Despite the destruction of 4 million mines and 8 million items of unexploded ordenance (UXD) since 1975, it is estimated that 16.478 million square meters of land in Vietnam is still contaminated by mines and UXO.

No. 4, Israel The No. 4 antipersonnel blast mine contains 188g of TNT that explodes under 8kg of pressure. Used in Israel, Lebanon and the Falkland Islands, the No. 4 has been copied by Egypt (T.78) and Iran (No. 4).

Transgender Various Artists

Melkweg Galerie Lijnbaansgracht 234a 1017 PH Amsterdam The Netherlands T: +31 20 531 81 81 www.melkweg.nl

From society’s perspective their existence is a mistake. Transgender people challenge the binary gender concept of male and female. Be it out of necessity or out of conscious choice. Or both. The Transgender Networks Netherlands organisation is using the exhibition to improve their advocacy skills by meeting with exhibition visitors and discussing trans-equality inclusion. With an installation and photographic work the photographers try to raise awareness of the fact that transgender identities are diverse, fluid, daring and usually outside the scope of the binary system.

Joan Fontcuberta (1955, Barcelona) used software developed by the US Air Force to create twodimensional cartographic data into a simulated three-dimensional image. Instead of feeding maps into the software, in this project Fontcuberta inserts painted landscapes: from Gauguin to Van Gogh, from Cezanne to Turner and Constable. The software translates them into new, virtual landscapes that Fontcuberta calls ‘post-landscapes’. They form a no-man’s land between the virtual and the real, between truth and illusion. This exhibition is part of the Life Like platform, a project launched by Foam, EYE Film Institute of The Netherlands and the Van Gogh Museum to draw attention to the realist art movement.

MIXOLOGY 2011 Various artists As this photograph tells us, this whole exhibition is about a mixture. This picture containing a strong connection to architecture clearly shows that. A ghostly but colorful city-sight shows the interdisciplinary skills of the artist and at the same time that mixture can challenge the vision. ARTITLED! Contemporary Art is presenting the group exhibition ‘MIXOLOGY 2011’ with new works from many photographers as Xavier Alphand, Jürgen Altmann, Allan Forsyth, Jeremy Blincoe, Murat Germen and Jasper James.
