BUZZ INDEPENDENCE DAY EDITION
From the Heads..
On the occasion of India’s 75th Independence Day, we unveil a mini-edition of the ToK Buzz. While the ToK Buzz was launched in April of this year as a way to promote ToK outside classrooms, with this edition, we aim to establish the ToK Buzz more so as a phenomenon, a philosophy of promoting the idea of knowledge than beyond IB classrooms. This Independence Day, we, along with the ToK Buzz team, would strongly urge you to reflect on your own knowledge about your country and heritage. How do you know what you know about your country and thus yourself?

SENIOR SCHOOL PARENTS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE FREEDOM?
HARMEET OBEROI Investor/ Real Estate Agent
ARCHNA KANODIA
Freedom for me is defined by the removal of barriers, those that one creates for themselves while terming them as societal limitations. Breaking free from a restrictive mindset and believing that you can achieve what you want to no matter your age, status, gender or lifestyle is freedom. Freedom for me is most important to our own identity. Without being free, we can't be us or what we want to be.
Homemaker
According to me, freedom is an innate right that humans are born with. Freedom in the true sense consists of freedom of thought SARIKA and expression, freedom of speech, freedom of being able to go MEHRA wherever one wants to, and most importantly, attaining freedom Businesswoman and equality for all.
DEEPIKA GUPTA
Freedom is when you are entitled to your basic human rights, and no one has the authority to take them away from you.

SANJAY GUPTA
The one question that I think I would have asked Mahatma Gandhi if he were still alive would be that "What was that one thing that kept you motivated to not give up and continue fighting for your country?" Is this the kind of India that you had hoped for after three-fourths of a century wherein although we have got Independence, we are still not ‘free’ and are still dealing with various issues and if not, what particular steps would you have taken to reverse this situation?
To what extent can terrorism be solved via non-violent means?
Businessman
SANJAY GOYAL Businessman
What exactly had you meant by “ahimsa”, and do you believe “ahimsa” or non-violence would work to bring about a significant change in today’s world? What, if any, were your plans for India post-independence? 3
SENIOR SCHOOL PARENTS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY IF YOU HAD A TIME MACHINE, WHICH PREINDEPENDENCE YEARS WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY?

I would want to revisit the times just before our independence when my parents and grandparents struggled through the partition, and understand what they went through in the tough journey from Rawalpindi to Amritsar. I would want to go to the time when India fought its first war of independence in 1857. It was the first time when Indians came together and fought for their rights, and I would want to be a part of this. I would like to visit when the British first came to India, as I would like to find out how they were able to capture India so easily. I think this would serve as an important reminder on how due to the lack of unity in India, other countries were able to take advantage of us 4

We got an opportunity to learn about a lot of freedom fighters in school. One freedom fighter who has always stayed with me is Bhagat Singh as he was so passionate and dedicated towards his motherland that at such a young age without even thinking, he laid his life down and hence has been a huge inspiration for me.
