What's New for 2015 The 2015 Acura NSX will be an all-new model. Highlights for this iconic sports car will be dramatic styling and a V6 hybrid power-train with an advanced all-wheel-drive system. We don't know much about it, but we know that it's coming. The Acura NSX began its return to the collective a utomotive consciousness at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, where Acura unveiled a prototype of the long-awaited next-generation supercar. A subsequent Super Bowl commercial starring Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno demonstrated Acura's commitment to reviving its ha lo supercar. Like the original NSX, the 2015 Acura NSX will be a midengine two-seater, will share roughly the same proportions and will also use a V6. But unlike the original car, which bowed out in 2005 after 15 years in production, the new NSX's direct-injection V6 will be augmented with two electric motors and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The NSX will also use an advanced all-wheel-drive system, which can both speed and slow the front wheels during cornering. Acura says the V6 hybrid system will offer V8-like acceleration with four-cylinder fuel economy. Outside, the prototype shows a low nose and a cabin with an equally low cowl line, thin A-pillars like the original, but with more aggressive styling on a wider platform. At the four corners are five-spoke alloy rims covered with wide Michelin Pilot tires. The production version won't likely stray far from this configuration. There are still a lot of unknowns about the new NSX. For us, one of the biggest potential concerns will be the new NSX's handling, as heavy hybrid components and all-wheel drive are not normally known for increasing a sports car's nimbleness and responsiveness. It's also unclear how special the NSX will really be outside of enhanced fuel economy, as today's top sports cars like the Audi R8, Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 are already outstanding in terms of performance, handling and daily-driven usability. The answers to these questions won't be known until we actually drive it, and our best guess for that will be in the spring of 2014. But in the meantime, you can rest assured that there will be enough hype and rumors in those two years to fill at least a few foo tball stadiums. Amalgamating the premium features of a powered and a manual wheelchair, Turkish designer GÜktßrk Topuz has created a functional mobility device that ensures effortless movement without any assistance from the others. +DLOHG DV ´+<%5,' ¾ WKH KL-tech wheelchair features a body finished in CRP (carbon reinforced plastic) structure, which makes it lightweight but at the same time rigid to allow better controls to the user. Powered by two hub motors located within the rotation center of each wheel, the HYBRID wheelchair improves the movement capability of the user without creating any obstacles. Moreover, the artistic design of the wheelchair infuses a lively spirit into the lives of the physically disabled.
The Future Microchips Will Be Smaller, Faster and Will Lose Much Less Energy One of the most important findings in transistors in the last four decades enhances the much desired development of smaller and more powerful microchips. Intel Corp. and IBM made the technological breakthrough by using an exotic new material: tiny switches that are the building blocks of microchips. "At the transistor level, we haven't changed the basic materials since the 1960s. So it's a real big breakthrough," said Dan Hutcheson, head of VLSI Research, an industry consultant. "Moore's Law was coming to a grinding halt," an allusion to the industry maxim formulated by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, who said that the number of transistors on a chip doubles roughly every two years. As a result of this principle, the chips have been smaller and faster, in an industry of $250 billion in annual sales. The new technology, based on the metal named hafnium, helps the development of circuitry as small as 45 nanometers (1:2000 of the width of a human hair). "We do expect that those products will deliver higher performance levels than existing products," said Steve Smith, vice president of Intel's digital enterprise group operations. "What we're seeing is excellent double-digit performance gains on media applications." The new technology could last at least two technology generations, when circuitry will get 22 nm dimensions. "We've been doing this for 40 years and we've got to the point where some of these layers you have to make smaller wouldn't scale anymore," said IBM Chief Technologist Bernie Meyerson. The current technology has a 5 atoms thick layer of silicon-based material, thus a lot of electricity leaks out, causing wasted power and shorter battery life. "It's like running two faucets when you only need one. You're actually wasting more water than you're actually using," said Jim McGregor, an analyst at the technology market research firm In-Stat. These are the benefits of the new technology: smaller transistors, potentially doubling their total number in a given area, and also faster ones, with a speed increase of over 20 %, and a decrease in power leakage by over 80 %. "Consumers are going towards mobility and power-sensitive solutions. We need to not only make things smaller and more efficient but also use less power," McGregor said. But there are many obstacles in continuing the development of new chip generations: it is increasingly difficult to create light beams narrow enough to etch circuitry on chips. "But this takes out what has been considered the biggest number one roadblock," VLSI's Hutcheson said.
What is Cloud Computing? Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that's often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams. A cloud service has three distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional hosting. It is sold on demand, typically by the minute or the hour; it is elastic -- a user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time; and the service is fully managed by the provider (the consumer needs nothing but a personal computer and Internet access). Significant innovations in virtualization and distributed computing, as well as improved access to high-speed Internet and a weak economy, have accelerated interest in cloud computing. A cloud can be private or public. A public cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet. (Currently, Amazon Web Services is the largest public cloud provider.) A private cloud is a proprietary network or a data center that supplies hosted services to a limited number of people. When a service provider uses public cloud resources to create their private cloud, the result is called a virtual private cloud. Private or public, the goal of cloud computing is to provide easy, scalable access to computing resources and IT services. Infrastructure-as-a-Service like Amazon Web Services provides virtual server (instanceAPI) to start, stop, access and configure their virtual servers and storage. In the enterprise, cloud computing allows a company to pay for only as much capacity as is needed, and bring more online as soon as required. Because this pay-for-what-you-use model resembles the way electricity, fuel and water are consumed, it's sometimes referred to as utility computing. Platform-as-a-service in the cloud is defined as a set of software and product development tools hosted on the provider's infrastructure. Developers create applications on the provider's platform over the Internet. PaaS providers may use APIs, website portals or gateway software installed on the customer's computer. Force.com, (an outgrowth of Salesforce.com) and GoogleApps are examples of PaaS. Developers need to know that currently, there are not standards for interoperability or data portability in the cloud. Some providers will not allow software created by their customers to be moved off the provider's platform. In the software-as-a-service cloud model, the vendor supplies the hardware infrastructure, the software product and interacts with the user through a front-end portal. SaaS is a very broad market. Services can be anything from Web-based email to inventory control and database processing. Because the service provider hosts both the application and the data, the end user is free to use the service from anywhere.
