SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. STRANGE BUT TRUE * In 1907, an ad campaign for Kellogg’s Corn Flakes offered a free box of cereal to any woman who would wink at her grocer. (By Lucie Winborne)

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I finally got a new car, and there’s no cassette player in it. I have a pretty large library of music on tapes, so I was a little bummed. My wife got me a little device that looks like an old Walkman, and it hooks up to the computer. I can convert my cassettes to digital songs, which I can burn onto CDs. It would cost hundreds of dollars to re-buy all that music, and there are some tapes that I couldn’t replace even if I had the money, so this is great.” -- C.C. in Ohio * “I love old books, and there are always a few I am looking for that are out of print. It seems like when I get inside a used-book store, I forget everything. So I made a card that I keep in my wallet and on it I list all the authors or titles I am after. This way, I have it handy all the time.” -- C.D. in Florida

* “I went to a tag sale and purchased a set of really cute flowerpots for barely anything. I like them so much that I am using them inside my house. They are holding utensils in the kitchen, and remotes and other odds and ends in the living room. They are great!” -- S.I. in Texas

If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities. “We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania. In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public. Learn More: The free Hero Care App helps members of the military and veteran communities access emergency and other Red Cross services anywhere in the world. Go to your app store or text GETHEROCARE to 90999 to download the app. For further facts, visit www.redcross.org.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc.gov/ lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-234-9473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

How to Get a Pet Cleanup Station in Your Neighborhood DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The sidewalks of my small town are often littered with dog waste. There is a town ordinance requiring owners to pick up after their dogs, but it’s clearly not being enforced. I read that installing pet waste stations throughout the community can greatly reduce this problem. How do I convince the town to do this? -- Gloria G. in Ohio DEAR GLORIA: Dog waste stations, which provide small plastic or compostable waste pickup bags and a covered can to dispose of poo, can not only improve the sidewalks in your town, it can improve water quality in local streams and lakes. Runoff from piles of dog poop add nitrogen and phosphorus to nearby water systems, depleting oxygen and endangering aquatic life. You can help fix this by calling attention to the problem and getting community support for pet pickup stations. 1. Contact your local municipality. Find out how to put forward a pet waste proposal. Sometimes one is on the table already; learn how you can join an ongoing effort to get approval for pet waste stations. 2. Install a pet pickup bag dispenser. If local ordinances allow it, set up a waste bag dispenser at the edge of your yard or driveway. 3. Enlist others in the cause. The best allies in this initiative are other responsible dog owners who you meet walking their dogs. Start a conversation, then a Facebook group, then an in-person meeting. The more stakeholders in the initiative, the faster it can happen. 4. Be prepared for pushback. You’ll have to answer questions like: How will the town pay for these stations? Who will maintain them? Are there other property or HOA issues to consider? It may take time, but with a little research and some positive conversations with neighbors, your town’s dog poo problem could soon be a thing of the past. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

The word “Hammock” originated from a Taino culture Arwakan word meaning “fishnet”. The name is also derived from the Hamack tree because hammocks used to be woven from their bark.

title symbols summarize skimming main idea inference annotations setting re-read

It was invented by the native-born people of Middle and South America, who called them "hamacas," in the Taino language. Columbus first encountered the hammock in the Bahamas. He observed in 1492 that “people were sleeping in nets between the trees." He brought the hammock back to Europe where sailors started using them extensively because swinging while suspended in the air led to better sleep than they were previously experiencing on the dirty ship floor.

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

We Care About TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Your Smiles

By Keith Roach, M.D.

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

WORDS OF WISDOM Wisdom teeth extraction used to be routine, but current practices suggest that removal is not always necessary. If wisdom teeth are healthy, grown in completely, correctly positioned, biting properly, and easy to clean at home, removal may not be necessary. However, sometimes wisdom teeth don’t fully emerge or come in at an angle and crowd other teeth. They may be difficult to properly brush and floss. Impacted wisdom teeth (trapped under the gumline) can become infected and may damage other teeth and roots. Many dentists will remove wisdom teeth that don’t fully emerge by early adulthood. It is easier to remove them before the roots and bone are completely formed, and the recovery time is faster in younger patients.

Whether you come to us for examination of your wisdom teeth, cosmetic work, simple fillings, or complex restorations, any program we suggest for your dental health will be thoroughly discussed with you before we begin. When you are looking for state-of-the-art, personalized dentistry from people who really care, welcome to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Our dental team works smoothly and efficiently together, devoted to making your dental experience comfortable as well as enhancing. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. As we age, the bones in our mouth become harder, making wisdom teeth more difficult to remove.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. EKG Test Result May Be a Sign of Heart Block ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had an EKG that showed first degree heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing a cardiologist in a few months to get an exercise stress echo. What is that? -- C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the electrical activity in the heart to give important information about the structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means that the electrical impulse in the heart is a little slow. By itself, it is not concerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. These sometimes do need treatment (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep an eye on, but it’s possible to have first degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart attack is often complicated by first degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocardiogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. It also allows the doctors sometimes to open up blockages in the arteries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Keeping our Promise: More than a Mission Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK

W

hen the United States military evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021, the plight of those left behind was thrown into the spotlight; however, passionate, selfless men and women had been working throughout the war to secure the safety of the interpreters and support personnel who risked their lives working with the United States. Keeping Our Promise, Inc. (KOP), originally the initial chapter of No One Left Behind (NOLB), is one such program, and the impact of last year’s evacuation cannot be overstated. KOP is the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today. This Rochester-based program assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. In 2021 74 Afghan families totaling 219 individuals were resettled in the greater Rochester, NY area. The majority – 195 individuals – arrived since July 4, 2021, a record for the program, straining its volunteer capacity. Pashtuns, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazara, Turkmen and Nuristanis from Afghanistan, Sunni and Shia Iraqis, as well as Kurdish allies, who served the U.S. have received help from KOP to come to Rochester under the SIV program for their faithful and honorable service to the United States in a warzone. KOP provides such assistance as: •

Finding & furnishing apartments for newly arrived families

Offering Caring Circles for each family to navigate the necessities of their new lives in Rochester

Exploring skilled-trades training & helping find employment

Offering modest car grants so SIVs can get to work, and much more.

“Keeping Our Promise started in my head in 2013 when I just signed a petition to get a military captain’s interpreter a visa into the U.S. after he was targeted by the Taliban,” said KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith. Having assisted over 600 SIV refugees and their families, Ellen was a credentialed journalist for 29 years, won 37 top journalism awards, and was recently honored with the 2019 Hannah G. Solomon Humanitarian Award, as well.

Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believe in American ideals.” - Ellen Smith

Work program, offering job search advice, and more. Mr. Samadie served the U.S. mission in Afghanistan for six years, has a degree in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Governance and Public Policy, and has done work for the United Nations. “It took off from there. People were bringing furniture to my house, and I used to house families at our farm,” said the Mendon resident. “It is a very stressful time for these families, especially when you have kids involved; they usually cry for the first two weeks. They are tired, off time by about 9 hours. Also, all of these families are used to living in extended family units, so it is the first time they are away from their aunts, cousins, grandparents…it is a learning experience for everyone all the time.” When No One Left Behind was discontinued in 2018, KOP was born, becoming an independent 501(c)3. “We still work with NOLB,” said Ellen. “In fact, they gave us the grant money to hire Laurel because I was so overwhelmed with families last year. We have already helped 43 families from January to June of this year.” Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero couldn’t have been more pleased. “A friend of mine had worked with KOP,” she said when explaining how she first heard of the organization. “He had worked with an organization called Skateistan, teaching youth in Afghanistan how to skateboard. I started in September 2021 as a volunteer, was a part of the caring circles, and adopted a few families. I was pretty much volunteering full-time when they asked me to work for them. It evolved from there.” Almost all of the Skateistan program families were able to be resettled into one community. The need of these KOP families could not be clearer. “We know that if these people don’t get out of Afghanistan, they could be beheaded or tortured by the Taliban or Isil (Islamic State),” explained Ellen. “Starting to hear the stories, and in some cases to see the physical wounds from battle, seeing what it meant for these soldiers to get their interpreters to safety has made me so passionate about this. These people believed in American ideals.” “These men and women have risked so much because of their hope for their country,” said Laurel. “They didn’t want to see an authoritarian system. Many of them want more rights for women. They risked a lot to work with Americans, to work beside us. They have lost so much, and it is really an honor to be able to be there to welcome them, to give them a safe place, a respite, a community…a chance to make it here.” Want to learn more about Keeping Our Promise? Come back next week for harrowing refugee experiences, resettlement, what’s next for KOP, and how you can help!

The KOP ball really started rolling when a military captain in Syracuse , Michael Chapel, reached out to Ellen to help his interpreter. “Michael got him an apartment, and we worked together to furnish it,” said Ellen. “I helped this second interpreter, and I thought I was done. Then, when I was on vacation in 2015, I received a call about another interpreter in a bad situation in Rochester. The interpreter asked if I could help his neighbor as well.”

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 www.willscarpetonebatavia.com

(NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. 585-345-0915 DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY Stay silent while you’re away as well. Social media silence should be continued while you’re on vacation as well. No matter how tempting it may be to share photos from an exotic location, such posts could catch the attention of all the wrong people. A recent report from MetLife indicated that 35 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 check in from their locations via social media. That can alert criminals that no one is manning the fort back home.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

For the first time in three years, Buffalo will return to St. John Fisher College in Pittsford for their training camp on Sunday, July 24th. Signs Wouldn’t it be nice/safe/perhaps lifesaving, if all 2-way intersections (like the one pictured) had this signage below the stop sign? “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” would be so helpful for so many 2-way intersections everywhere, and sadly, lives have been lost because a driver unfortunately deemed it a 4-way stop, and proceeds into oncoming traffic. May not be the complete answer, but a very valid attempt at one. Let’s see more of these signs!

S E V RA Many Thanks! Many thanks to Eileen & Morgan of Livonia Public Library - for helping me with Zoom for the Livonia Graduation Ceremony on June 26, 2022. - Grateful, MJB Ukraine A heartfelt Thank You to our community who assisted the Community Clothes Closet along with the VUMC to raise monies by purchasing dinners June 25th to aid the beleaguered Ukrainian citizens. I’m sure they will be grateful more than we could ever know. A total of $1,400 will be arriving there for emergent use. We pray that God guides and blesses the use of the monies as we continue remembering them in prayer.

Dangerous Driver To the older lady driving the blue Mercedes SUV on 6/28. Turning left at the intersection between [local business] and [local business], you did not have the right of way! You completely cut me off. I had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting you. But trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, it looked like you didn't even see me (scary). You then proceeded to not even go the speed limit. I was then starting to get more irritated with you, so I turned on my headlights, hoping then you would see me. You then turned in to [local business]. The icing on the cake: you attempted to flip me off, but your arthritic hand looked more like an eagle's claws. So, I blew my horn as to draw attention to you with the other patrons, not that you'd actually tell them the truth. My hope is that someone in your family will see this and maybe re-evaluate your driving ability. I was able to stop in time, saving my son and myself. The next person may not be able to. Stop being so selfish and arrogant.

Interesting As a grocery store employee, I find it ironic that customers will come into the store and be outright abusive over rising prices, but will not bat an eye over spending money on enough fireworks to last three consecutive nights. Move your car! Be a good neighbor and stop parking directly across the street from the end of my driveway so that I don’t have to struggle to get out. We already live on a narrow street. Have some consideration.

DID YOU KNOW?

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The comb jelly, aka the warty comb jelly, sea walnut or Mnemiopsis leidyi, is the only known animal to have a transient anus -- or, in more common parlance, a disappearing butt.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK (NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips. • Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. • Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant. • Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. • Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. • Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: You can find further moving facts and tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com and (800) GO-PENSKE.
