PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Body & Mind ____________________14
Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

We Care About
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Your Smiles
What Is Treatment for a Fatty Liver?
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
AN UNEXPECTED SOURCE OF ORAL HEALTH Breastfeeding may not necessarily be suitable for every mother or every infant, but if you are on the fence about deciding what is best for you and your child, you should know that breastfeeding can have significant benefits for your baby’s oral health. Because breast milk is more easily digested than formula by most babies, more nutrients and vitamins that are vital to tooth and bone development are able to be absorbed. Breastfed babies are also far less likely to experience baby bottle tooth decay (also known as “bottle rot”). Of course, breastfeeding cannot eliminate tooth decay and you should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they erupt.
---
Taught early enough, healthy habits turn into healthy lifestyles. Begin with proper brushing and flossing techniques and a toothfriendly diet. Continue with regular professional care and cleanings for a beaming smile that will last a lifetime. If you would like more information on how to get your child’s dental experience off to a good start, we welcome your call at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246. We have both children and adults as patients here at 6 Batavia City Centre, because everyone, regardless of age, deserves a winning smile.
P.S. According to an American Dental Association study, children who were breastfed are less likely to have tooth alignment issues when they are older.
www.bataviafamilydental.com Helping individuals with dementia remain comfortable is a priority for caregivers, and understanding the symptoms and treatments can help caregivers make patients and loved ones as comfortable as possible.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old woman. I am 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weigh 107 pounds. I take no medication. When I went to the doctor last week, he found that my alkaline phosphatase was 176, my ALT 10, and my AST 11. He told me I had fatty liver and to get a scan, but I had no way to get to the place to have it done. He did not say anything else about it. I have no symptoms. Does this sound like fatty liver to you? I did not really like my doctor, but with my insurance it is hard to change doctors. If I do have fatty liver, is there anything I can do for it? -- J.F. ANSWER: Fatty liver is an increasingly common problem. Risk factors include being overweight and having diabetes, high blood pressure and abnormal blood cholesterol levels. Alcohol use is also a cause of fatty liver, and all people with fatty liver are strongly recommended to abstain from alcohol entirely. The primary treatment is diet and weight loss. It sounds like there was some missed communication between you and your doctor. Fatty liver is a possibility; however, it does not seem likely to me, as you have not identified any of the risk factors, and you are certainly not overweight (if anything, you are a bit underweight). Further, although the alkaline phosphatase can be elevated in fatty liver (yours is just a bit high), it is more common for AST and ALT to be elevated, which yours are not. An ultrasound scan is a good, but not definitive, way of looking for fatty liver. A liver biopsy is still the definitive test, but it’s often not done in people whose history, physical exam and ultrasound are all suggestive. A slightly abnormal alkaline phosphatase does not necessarily mean you have a liver problem. Bone issues (fractures, Paget’s disease of bone, high thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels) can cause a high alkaline phosphatase, too. Additional liver tests -- checking the GGT level or specifically what kind of alkaline phosphatase you have (by isoenzyme analysis) -- can make the source of the elevated alkaline phosphatase clearer. Getting an ultrasound scan and additional blood tests is a reasonable place to start. Unfortunately, lack of confidence in your physician is a different problem. If you really can’t get a new doctor, then you need to have a conversation about proceeding with evaluation in such a way that you can do so while being confident that you are getting good advice. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 14

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING
CARPET/FLOORING
When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. STICKY GRAPE SCHIACCIATA Serves 6 1 cake compressed yeast, 1 packet active dry yeast or 1 packet quick-rising yeast A pinch of sugar 1 cup warm water 4 1/4 cups Italian “00” flour or cake flour 2 egg yolks 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 tablespoons butter, softened 1/2 cup brown sugar, plus extra to sprinkle Finely grated peel of 1 unwaxed lemon 3/4 cup walnuts, chopped 8 ounces black grapes, seeded (Sangiovese wine grapes, if possible) 2 cups heavy cream or mascarpone 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar 6 tablespoons Vin Santo 1 jelly roll pan, 9 x 13 inches, oiled If you are using compressed yeast, mix it with the sugar in a medium bowl, then beat in the warm water. Leave for 10 minutes until frothy. For other yeasts, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture, egg yolks, olive oil, and salt. Mix until the dough comes together. Tip out onto a lightly floured work surface. Wash and dry your hands. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. It should be quite soft, but if it’s too soft to handle, add more flour. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel, and let rise until doubled in size - about 1 hour. To make the walnut butter, cream the butter and sugar together, then stir in the lemon peel and walnuts. Keep at room temperature. Uncover the dough, punch out the air, then shape into a ball. Roll or pull the dough into a rectangle to line the prepared jelly roll pan. Spread the walnut butter over the schiacciata crust, add the grapes, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour until puffy and doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Uncover the dough and bake for 15 minutes. Turn the oven down to 350 F and bake for 20 minutes more or until risen and golden. Let cool slightly before turning out. To make the Vin Santo cream, beat the cream, confectioners’ sugar and Vin Santo together in a bowl until the mixture forms soft peaks. Cut the focaccia into wedges and serve with the Vin Santo cream. FFA and 4H Members Bring Farm Experience to Byron-Bergen BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER
I
n June, the Byron-Bergen FFA brought agriculture education to the Kindergarten classes. Members of the FFA introduced the younger students to a variety of animals including cows, sheep, goats, and ducks. The outdoor event on the Elementary School grounds was a collaboration between FFA Advisor Jeffrey Parnapy and Kindergarten Teacher Ayn Gardner. “We reached out to local people who own animals, a farmer brought his tractor in, and we’re also learning about different kinds of feed,” said Parnapy. “Both 4H and FFA members are presenting their animals and answering the kindergarteners’ questions.” In some cases, the younger students were able to touch the animals. “I like petting the lambs,” said kindergarten student Evelyn Haywood. “Looking around today, I already think that this is going to have to be a yearly event,” said Parnapy. “Everyone is having a blast and I’m so excited that we were able to provide this experience for the kindergarten students.” Upstate Milk donated milk and cheese sticks for all the students and the FFA provided goodie bags for participating elementary students.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding cats with fleas, I have had great success eliminating fleas by adding powdered brewer’s yeast to their food. One of my cats even licked it out of her bowl dry. Brewer’s yeast is usually available at health food stores. -- Suzanne F., via email DEAR SUZANNE: Thank you for the tip! Brewer’s yeast is a great nutritional supplement for cats and dogs, and many owners have observed that their pets have fewer fleas when it’s added to their food. It can certainly be a strong asset to a well-rounded flea fighting strategy. For cats and small dogs, sprinkle about half a teaspoon on their food at mealtimes. For medium dogs up to 30 pounds, increase that to a teaspoon. For every 30 pounds over that, add a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast. Consistency is important. Brewer’s yeast, unfortunately, does not repel ticks, so pets -- even those who stay indoors -- should be checked regularly throughout the spring, summer and fall for these little hangers-on. Brush your pet’s coat daily to remove flea eggs and any remaining fleas. Owners may need to use stronger flea and tick treatments in addition to brewer’s yeast, but it’s still a great ally in the fight against fleas. Other flea prevention strategies include vacuuming your home twice a week during peak season to reduce tracked-in fleas and their eggs, and quickly ruffling your pet’s coat with a towel and cleaning their paws when they come indoors. Bathing your dog or cat can help reduce irritation from flea bites, but only use shampoos designed for pets to keep their skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Send your flea-fighting tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Aug. 11-22
Erie County Fair- Daily Show 6:00-7:15pm (Not appearing 8/17 & 8/18)
Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Keeping Track At some point we need to start making notes. Maybe you’re not there yet. But that day might sneak up on you when you discover that you’ve forgotten to mail the check for your property taxes. Or worse, when a police officer stops you and says your license tags expired -- three months ago. Forgetting the car tag might be excusable if your town no longer sends out notices. Or if you had the same vehicle for eight years and tags were always due the same month each year, and now you have a new vehicle with a different due date. But when you’ve lived in the same home for 30 years and you forget to pay the property taxes ... that’s when you know you need to start making notes. A good way to do this is with an annual calendar. When you flip the page, there in bright letters are your tasks for the month. If one of the tasks happens to fall in the first week of the next month, make a note in the last week of the previous month. Use the previous year’s calendar, flip through all the pages, make your notes and you’ll be all set. ... Unless those tiny squares just won’t do the trick, which is possible if you’re still working or have a long list of tasks to accomplish on a weekly basis. For many years I’ve used an 8-by-11 notebook. Each page is a week, divided with lines into six boxes, dated. The weekend, when theoretically there are no urgent tasks, gets Saturday and Sunday in one box. It might seem silly to start keeping such a detailed calendar of things you need to do. After all, haven’t you always remembered when the car tags are due? Until you don’t, and are reminded by a police officer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We’re open, scheduling tours and running SUMMER MOVE-IN SPECIALS!
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Get cobwebs off a window screen with a lint roller. * Want to make that summer at-home pedicure last? Don’t skip the base coat or a UV topcoat. The base coat will allow the color to adhere evenly and better. Then the topcoat will protect the color from the sun while giving it a little extra shine. * “Use an over-the-door shoe holder to house your makeup and hair accessories, plus jewelry and other personal items. You can trim a curtain or piece of fabric to fit over the length of it, and tie it to the top if it looks too messy in your room.” -- M.K. in North Carolina
Rent always includes: • 3 meals daily • Housekeeping weekly • Bed Linen change weekly • Transportation 5 days/wk. • Activities & Social Events • 24/7 Security Staff • Utilities
* Honey has amazing properties, and one of them is its antiseptic powers. You can even use it on pimples. Just a tiny dab will help keep bacteria responsible for breakouts from taking over. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* Use this trick to freshen your stuffed animals. Dust with baking soda and put several together in a large paper grocery bag until it’s half full. Fold the top of the bag down and shake vigorously. Remove the stuffed friends and shake off any excess baking soda. For good measure, put the dustedoff toys in a low- or no-heat dryer cycle for 10-15 minutes. * Hashbrowns can be made on a waffle iron. Coat liberally with canola oil or butter-flavored nonstick spray, and add shredded potatoes and finely diced onion. Allow the iron to cook the potatoes to your desired level of crispness, and flip out both sides onto a plate. They will be both crisp and soft!

427 E. Main St., Batavia www.themanorhousebatavia.com TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Petty behavior To the officer who was giving out numerous parking tickets on Friday evening, July 2nd to the people who parked at the abandoned [local building] in [local town] in order to simply walk across the street and attend [local event]. Seriously? For many of these people, it was the first time in over a year that they were finally able to get out and do something fun, and your response is for them to return to their car and see that they have been slapped with a parking fine for parking at a vacant premises? Wake up! Community relations do matter!
S E V RA Thank you so much! Tom Martin: what a true gentleman! My father always told my brothers before they left the house each time to behave like a gentleman and a scholar at all times. Tom, you certainly are one, a country one at that from beautiful Caledonia. Thank you for calling me about finding my wallet. Left it on the top of my car! Thanks, landscapers! It’s so sad to see how the public and employers treat these hard-working underpaid landscapers. Mind you, most of these landscapers worked through the whole pandemic in all kinds of weather, and physical jobs for peanuts! Show some love for these true hard-working men and women!
Borrowing from Social Security I’m 85 yrs old. I started working when I was 14 yrs old. I paid into Social Security until I stopped working when I was almost 76 years old. I can remember several occasions when our Social Security fund was robbed. Earlier this year, $435 billion was stolen (if my memory is correct), from Social Security. In the last month while there were cries of the imminent bankruptcy of Medicare, billions were stolen again. Medicare is not a gift; we paid into that fund for many years. Each month, I pay over $148. Higher wage earners pay hundreds more a month. So the story goes again. Also, Medicaid and Medicare are always referred to in the same breath. People do not pay for Medicaid.
Independence Day article Thanks to Ken Paulson for his story on the Declaration of Independence! We appreciated reading that! Huge thanks! I would like to say a huge thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff, the West Bloomfield Ambulance, Canandaigua Ambulance, the ALS Crew, and all volunteers or not who acted so fast on June 22nd, 2021, around 3:15pm. The first responder on scene was an Ontario County Sheriff who replaced my husband’s tourniquet with a much better one, and everyone’s wisdom on artery lacerations saved my husband’s life! He had cut his thigh and was bleeding out fast. I called 911 and told the dispatcher what I needed, and they, in turn, had a Sheriff in the area. God Bless You All! Thanks as well to the nurses and technicians on 3 East and ER and surgical doctors and nurses. Surgery took about four hours! Started at 10pm and ended about 2am. I ask people to try to be kind, remember police, fire, ambulance, etc. are all here to help. Shake someone’s hand and tell them how appreciated they are, please. More praise, less grumble. Prayers and appreciation to all of you who had part in saving another life! You all are the best! You give us hope! Stay safe; stay well. Blessings from the man with a box cutter & wife.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
